Strongly interacting many-body system of bosons exhibiting the quantum carpet pattern is investigated exactly by using Gaudin solutions. We show that this highly coherent design usually present in noninteracting, single-body scenarios gets destroyed by weak-to-moderate interatomic interactions in an ultracold bosonic gas trapped in a box potential. However, it becomes revived in a very strongly interacting regime, when the system undergoes fermionization. We track the whole single- to many-body crossover, providing an analysis of de- and rephasing present in the system.
We report a formation of sharp, solitonlike structures in an experimentally accessible ultracold Fermi gas, as a quantum carpet solution is analyzed in a many body system. The effect is perfectly coherent in a noninteracting gas, but in the presence of repulsive interaction in a two-component system, the structures vanish at a finite time. As they disappear, the system enters a dynamical equilibrium, in which kinetic energies of atoms tend to the same average value. The coherence is revived in a strong interaction regime, with the onset of phase separation, and with a double quantum carpet app…
An unit filling Bose-Hubbard Hamilonian embedded in strong Stark field is studied in the off-resonant regime inhibiting single and many-particle first order tunneling resonances. We investigate the occurrence of coherent dipole wave-like propagation along of an optical lattice by means of an effective Hamiltonian accounting for second order tunneling processes. It is shown that dipole wavefunction evolution in the short-time limit is ballistic and that finite size effects induce dynamical self-interference patterns known as quantum carperts. We also present the effects of the border right afte…
We investigate the ground state of a few-body Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with varying interaction strengths and mass ratio. A bunching-antibunching crossover of the bosonic species for increasing interspecies' repulsion is observed within our fully correlated \textit{ab~initio} studies. Interestingly, this crossover is suppressed if the bosonic repulsion exceeds a critical value which strongly depends on the mass ratio. In order to unveil the physical origin of this crossover, we employ different levels of approximations: while a species mean-field approach can accou…
Cold atomic gases have provided us with a great number of opportunities for studying various physical systems under controlled conditions that are seldom offered in other fields. We are thus at the point where one can truly do quantum simulation of models that are relevant for instance in condensed-matter or high-energy physics, i.e. we are on the verge of a 'cool' quantum simulator as envisioned by Feynman. One of the avenues under exploration is the physics of one-dimensional systems. Until recently this was mostly in the many-body limit but now experiments can be performed with controllable…
We investigate the formation of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional binary mixture of bosonic atoms, applying the method of numerical diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian. The excitation spectra and ground-state pair correlations signal the formation of a few-boson droplet when crossing the region of critical inter-species interactions. The self-binding affects the rotational excitations, displaying a change in the energy dispersion from negative curvature, associated with superfluidity in the many-body limit, to a nearly parabolic curvature indicative of rigid body rotation. W…
In one spatial dimension, quantum systems with an attractive three-body contact interaction exhibit a scale anomaly. In this work, we examine the few-body sector for up to six particles. We study those systems with a self-consistent, non-perturbative, iterative method, in the subspace of zero total momentum. Exploiting the structure of the contact interaction, the method reduces the complexity of obtaining the wavefunction by three powers of the dimension of the Hilbert space. We present results on the energy, and momentum and spatial structure, as well as Tan's contact. We find a Fermi-Fermi …
We theoretically investigate ground-state properties of a three-component Fermi gas with pairwise contact interactions between different components near a triatomic resonance where bound trimers are about to appear. Using variational equations for in-medium two- and three-body cluster states in three dimensions, we elucidate the competition of pair and triple formations due to the Fermi surface effects. We present the ground-state phase diagram that exhibits transition from a Cooper pair to Cooper triple state and crossover from a Cooper triple to tightly bound trimer state at negative scatter…
We discuss the hadron--quark crossover accompanied by the formation of Cooper triples (three-body counterpart of Cooper pairs) by analogy with the Bose--Einstein condensate to Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer crossover in two-component fermionic systems. Such a crossover is different from a phase transition, which often involves symmetry breaking. We calculate the in-medium three-body energy from the three-body $T$-matrix with a phenomenological three-body force characterizing a bound hadronic state in vacuum. With increasing density, the hadronic bound-state pole smoothly undergoes a crossover tow…
The properties of a balanced two-component Fermi gas in a one-dimensional harmonic trap are studied by means of the coupled cluster method. For few fermions we recover the results of exact diagonalization, yet with this method we are able to study much larger systems. We compute the energy, the chemical potential, the pairing gap, and the density profile of the trapped clouds, smoothly mapping the crossover between the few-body and many-body limits. The energy is found to converge surprisingly rapidly to the many-body result for every value of the interaction strength. Many more particles are …
The existence of quantum droplets in binary Bose-Einstein condensate mixtures rely on beyondmean field effects, competing with mean-field effects. Interestingly, the beyond-mean field effect is changing from repulsive in 3D to attractive in 1D leading to drastically different behaviors. We study in detail the crossover between these two regimes in a quasi-1D regime where the radial wavefunction is frozen. Quantum droplets exist for all values and sign of the mean-field interaction. We find that approaching the crossover is experimentally appealing as it reduces the relative importance of three…

Conservation laws in a quantum many-body system play a direct role in its dynamic behavior. Understanding the effect of weakly breaking a conservation law due to coherent and incoherent errors is thus crucial, e.g., in the realization of reliable quantum simulators. In this work, we perform exact numerics and time-dependent perturbation theory to study the dynamics of \textit{symmetry violation} in quantum many-body systems with slight coherent (at strength $λ$) or incoherent (at strength $γ$) breaking of their local and global symmetries. We rigorously prove the symmetry violation to be a div…

Atomic many-body phase transitions and quantum criticality have recently attracted much attention in non-standard optical lattices. Here we perform an experimental study of finite-temperature superfluid transition of bosonic atoms confined in a three dimensional triangular lattice, whose structure can be continuously deformed to dimensional crossover regions including quasi-one and two dimensions. This non-standard lattice system provides a versatile platform to investigate many-body correlated phases. For the three dimensional case, we find that the finite temperature superfluid transition ag…
Isotropic scattering in various spatial dimensions is considered for arbitrary finite-range potentials using non-relativistic effective field theory. With periodic boundary conditions, compactifications from a box to a plane and to a wire, and from a plane to a wire, are considered by matching S-matrix elements. The problem is greatly simplified by regulating the ultraviolet divergences using dimensional regularization with minimal subtraction. General relations among (all) effective-range parameters in the various dimensions are derived, and the dependence of bound states on changing dimensio…
We investigate the zero-temperature quasiparticle properties of a mobile impurity immersed in a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid at the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid, by using a many-body $T$-matrix approach that excludes Efimov trimer bound states. Termed BEC-BCS crossover polaron, or crossover polaron in short, this quasiparticle couples to elementary excitations of a many-body background and therefore could provide a useful probe of the underlying strongly interacting Fermi superfluid. Due to the existence of a signifi…
The many-body physics in the dimensional crossover regime attracts much attention in cold atom experiments, but yet to explore systematically. One of the technical difficulties existed in the experiments is the lack of the experimental technique to quantitatively tune the atom occupation ratio of the different lattice bands. In this letter, we report such techniques in a process of transferring a 3D Fermi gas into a 1D optical lattice, where the capability of tuning the occupation of the energy band is realized by varying the trapping potentials of the optical dipole trap (ODT) and the lattice…
Motivated by recent experiments on interacting bosons in quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice [Nature {\bf 573}, 385 (2019)] we analyse theoretically properties of the system in the crossover between delocalized and localized regimes. Comparison of time dynamics for uniform and density wave like initial states enables demonstration of the existence of the mobility edge. To this end we define a new observable, the mean speed of transport at long times. It gives us an efficient estimate of the critical disorder for the crossover. We also show that the mean velocity growth of occupation fluctuat…
We unravel the stationary properties and the interaction quench dynamics of two bosons, confined in a two-dimensional anisotropic harmonic trap. A transcendental equation is derived giving access to the energy spectrum and revealing the dependence of the energy gaps on the anisotropy parameter. The relation between the two and the one dimensional scattering lengths as well as the Tan contacts is established. The contact, capturing the two-body short range correlations, shows an increasing tendency for a larger anisotropy. Subsequently, the interaction quench dynamics from attractive to repulsi…
We investigate pairing and superconductivity in the attractive Fermi Hubbard model on the one-dimensional sawtooth lattice, which exhibits a flat band by fine-tuning the hopping rates. We first solve the two-body problem, both analytically and numerically, to extract the binding energy and the effective mass of the pairs. Based on the DMRG method, we address the ground-state properties of the many-body system, assuming equal spin populations. We compare our results with those available for a linear chain, where the model is integrable by Bethe ansatz, and show that the multiband nature of the …

Dissipation is ubiquitous in nature and plays a crucial role in quantum systems such as causing decoherence of quantum states. Recently, much attention has been paid to an intriguing possibility of dissipation as an efficient tool for preparation and manipulation of quantum states. Here we report the realization of successful demonstration of a novel role of dissipation in a quantum phase transition using cold atoms. We realize an engineered dissipative Bose-Hubbard system by introducing a controllable strength of two-body inelastic collision via photo-association for ultracold bosons in a thr…
Recent experimental and theoretical efforts have focused on the effect of dissipation on quantum many-body systems in their many-body localized (MBL) phase. While in the presence of dephasing noise such systems reach a unique ergodic state, their dynamics is characterized by slow relaxation manifested in non-exponential decay of self-correlations. Here we shed light on a currently much debated issue, namely the role of interactions for this relaxation dynamics. We focus on the experimentally relevant situation of the evolution from an initial charge density wave in the presence of strong depha…
We study the beyond-mean-field corrections to the energy of a dipolar Bose gas confined to two dimensions by a box potential with dipoles oriented in plane. At a critical strength of the dipolar interaction the system becomes unstable on the mean field level. We find that the ground state of the gas is strongly influenced by the corrections, leading to formation of a self-bound droplet, in analogy to the free space case. Properties of the droplet state can be found by minimizing the extended Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. In the limit of strong confinement we show analytically that the co…
Excitons in two-dimensional semiconductors provide a novel platform for fundamental studies of many-body interactions. In particular, dipolar interactions between spatially indirect excitons may give rise to strongly correlated phases of matter that so far have been out of reach of experiments. Here, we show that excitonic few-body systems in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides undergo a crossover from a Tonks-Girardeau to a charge-density-wave regime. To this end, we take into account realistic system parameters and predict the effective exciton-exciton interaction potential. We …
We perform large-scale, numerically exact calculations on the two-dimensional interacting Fermi gas with a contact attraction. Reaching much larger lattice sizes and lower temperatures than previously possible, we determine systematically the finite-temperature phase diagram of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions for interaction strengths ranging from BCS to crossover to BEC regimes. The evolutions of the pairing wavefunctions and the fermion and Cooper pair momentum distributions with temperature are accurately characterized. In the crossover regime, we find that the contact…
We study disorder-free many-body localization in the flat-band Creutz ladder, which was recently realized in cold-atoms in an optical lattice. In a non-interacting case, the flat-band structure of the system leads to a Wannier wavefunction localized on four adjacent lattice sites. In the flat-band regime both with and without interactions, the level spacing analysis exhibits Poisson-like distribution indicating the existence of disorder-free localization. Calculations of the inverse participation ratio support this observation. Interestingly, this type of localization is robust to weak disorde…
We study ultra-cold bosons out of equilibrium in a one-dimensional (1D) setting and probe the breaking of integrability and the resulting relaxation at the onset of the crossover from one to three dimensions. In a quantum Newton's cradle type experiment, we excite the atoms to oscillate and collide in an array of 1D tubes and observe the evolution for up to 4.8 seconds (400 oscillations) with minimal heating and loss. By investigating the dynamics of the longitudinal momentum distribution function and the transverse excitation, we observe and quantify a two-stage relaxation process. In the ini…
We study three-body recombination in an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture. We first show theoretically that, for weak inter-species coupling, the loss rate is proportional to Tan's contact. Second, using a 7 Li/ 6 Li mixture we probe the recombination rate in both the thermal and dual superfluid regimes. We find excellent agreement with our model in the BEC-BCS crossover. At unitarity where the fermion-fermion scattering length diverges, we show that the loss rate is proportional the 4/3 power of the fermionic density. Our results demonstrate that impurity-induced losses can be used as a quantitati…
In a joint experimental and theoretical effort, we report on the formation of a macro-droplet state in an ultracold bosonic gas of erbium atoms with strong dipolar interactions. By precise tuning of the s-wave scattering length below the so-called dipolar length, we observe a smooth crossover of the ground state from a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a dense macro-droplet state of more than $10^4$ atoms. Based on the study of collective excitations and loss features, we quantitative prove that quantum fluctuations stabilize the ultracold gas far beyond the instability threshold impose…
Experiments with ultracold atoms provide a highly controllable laboratory setting with many unique opportunities for precision exploration of quantum many-body phenomena. The nature of such systems, with strong interaction and quantum entanglement, makes reliable theoretical calculations challenging. Especially difficult are excitation and dynamical properties, which are often the most directly relevant to experiment. We carry out exact numerical calculations, by Monte Carlo sampling of imaginary-time propagation of Slater determinants, to compute the pairing gap in the two-dimensional Fermi g…
We investigate how confining a transverse spatial dimension influences the few- and many-body properties of non-relativistic bosons with pointlike interactions. Our main focus is on the dimensional crossover from three to two dimensions, which is of relevance for ultracold atom experiments. Using Functional Renormalization Group equations and T-matrix calculations we study how the phase transition temperature changes as a function of the spatial extent of the transverse dimension and relate the 3D and 2D s-wave scattering lengths. The analysis reveals how the properties of the lower-dimensiona…
In a bilayer system of fermionic dipoles, a full control over the strength of the attractive interactions between two layers leads to the BCS-BEC crossover. Here, using the BCS mean field theory, we study such a crossover in symmetric bilayers of ultracold dipolar fermions with their dipole moments being perpendicular to layers. In particular, we investigate how the pairing between two layers and the many-body screening of interlayer interaction affect each other. We compare results for pairings obtained with three different approximations for the interlayer interactions namely, bare dipole-di…
