We investigate many-body properties of equally populated three-component fermions with attractive three-body contact interaction in one dimension. A diagrammatic approach suggests the possible occurrence of Cooper triples at low temperature, which are three-body counterparts of Cooper pairs with a two-body attraction. We develop a minimal framework that bridges the crossover from tightly-bound trimers to Cooper triples with increasing chemical potential and show how the formation of Cooper triples occurs in the grand-canonical phase diagram. Moreover, we argue that this non-trivial crossover is similar to the hadron-quark crossover proposed in dense matter. A coexistence of medium-induced triples and the underlying Fermi sea at positive chemical potential is analogous to quarkyonic matter consisting of baryonic excitations and the underlying quark Fermi sea. The comparison with the existing quantum Monte Carlo results implies that the emergence of these kinds of three-body states can be a microscopic origin of the peak of the sound velocity along the crossover.
We discuss the hadron--quark crossover accompanied by the formation of Cooper triples (three-body counterpart of Cooper pairs) by analogy with the Bose--Einstein condensate to Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer crossover in two-component fermionic systems. Such a crossover is different from a phase transition, which often involves symmetry breaking. We calculate the in-medium three-body energy from the three-body $T$-matrix with a phenomenological three-body force characterizing a bound hadronic state in vacuum. With increasing density, the hadronic bound-state pole smoothly undergoes a crossover tow…
We theoretically investigate ground-state properties of a three-component Fermi gas with pairwise contact interactions between different components near a triatomic resonance where bound trimers are about to appear. Using variational equations for in-medium two- and three-body cluster states in three dimensions, we elucidate the competition of pair and triple formations due to the Fermi surface effects. We present the ground-state phase diagram that exhibits transition from a Cooper pair to Cooper triple state and crossover from a Cooper triple to tightly bound trimer state at negative scatter…
The condensation of Cooper pairs, originating from the Fermi-surface instability due to a weakly attractive interaction between two fermions, opened a new frontier for exploring many-body physics in interdisciplinary contexts. In this work, we discuss the possible condensation of Cooper triples, which are three-body counterparts of Cooper pairs for three-component fermions with a three-body attraction. Although each composite trimer-like state obeys the Fermi-Dirac statistics, its aggregate can form a condensate at zero center-of-mass momentum in the presence of the internal degrees of freedom…
We study a possible superconductivity in quasiperiodic systems, by portraying the issue within the attractive Hubbard model on a Penrose lattice. Applying a real-space dynamical mean-field theory to the model consisting of 4181 sites, we find a superconducting phase at low temperatures. Reflecting the nonperiodicity of the Penrose lattice, the superconducting state exhibits an inhomogeneity. According to the type of the inhomogeneity, the superconducting phase is categorized into three different regions which cross over each other. Among them, the weak-coupling region exhibits spatially extend…
We investigate the effect of Pauli blocking on universal two- and three-body states in the medium. Their corresponding energies are extracted from the poles of two- and three-body in-medium scattering amplitudes. Compared to the vacuum, the binding of dimer and trimer states is reduced by the medium effects. In two-body scattering, the well-known physics of Cooper pairs is recovered. In the three-body sector, we find a new class of positive energy poles which can be interpreted as Cooper triples.
We demonstrate the rise-and-fall of multiple pseudogaps in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover in two-band fermionic systems having different pairing strengths in the deep band and in the shallow band. The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange cou…
We extend our previous investigations of fermionic condensation in broad Feshbach resonances by using the two-channel model developed for narrow Feshbach resonances. We investigate two crossovers: the BCS-BEC crossover by changing the s-wave scattering length and the crossover from a narrow to a broad resonance by changing the atom-molecule coupling. At zero temperature we analyze, as a function of both atom-molecule coupling and s-wave scattering length, the chemical potential, the energy gap, and the condensate fraction of atoms. In particular, we predict the contribution of Cooper pairs and…
We investigate the specific heat at constant volume $C_V$ in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, we show that this thermodynamic quantity is sensitive to the stability of preformed Cooper pairs. That is, while $C_V(T\gesim T_{\rm c})$ in the unitary regime is remarkably enhanced by {\it metastable} preformed Cooper pairs or pairing fluctuations, it is well described b…
We investigate the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular dimers in a gas of ultracold atoms loaded on a two-dimensional optical lattice. By using the the mean-field BCS equations of the emerging Hubbard model and the concept of off-diagonal-long-range-order for fermions we calculate analytically and numerically the pair binding energy, the energy gap and the condensate fraction of Cooper pairs as a function of interaction strength and filling fractor of atoms in the lattice at zero…
Grassmann Phase Space Theory (GSPT) is applied to the BEC/BCS crossover in cold fermionic atomic gases and used to determine the evolution (over either time or temperature) of the Quantum Correlation Functions (QCF) that specify: (a) the positions of the spin up and spin down fermionic atoms in a single Cooper pair and (b) the positions of the two spin up and two spin down fermionic atoms in two Cooper pairs The first of these QCF is relevant to describing the change in size of a Cooper pair, as the fermion-fermion coupling constant is changed via Feshbach resonance methods through the crossov…
We investigate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)- Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in a two-band superfluid Fermi gas with an energy shift between the bands. When the intraband coupling in the cold (first) band is fixed as weak, we find that in the case of vanishing interband interaction and in the strong-coupling limit of the hot (second) band the system undergoes a transition to a single-component configuration with the full suppression of the first energy gap and with the full redistribution of particles between bands. For non-vanishing interband interaction we reveal the non-monoto…
We investigate single-particle properties of a mass-imbalanced Fermi gas in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover region. In the presence of mass imbalance, we point out that the ordinary $T$-matrix approximation, which has been extensively used to clarify various BCS-BEC crossover physics in the mass-balanced case, unphysically gives a double-valued solution in terms of the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ in the crossover region. To overcome this serious problem, we include higher order strong-coupling corrections beyond the $T$-mat…
Microcavity electron-hole-photon systems in two-dimensions are long anticipated to exhibit a crossover from Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid, when carrier density is tuned to reach the Mott transition density. Yet, theoretical understanding of such a BEC-BCS crossover largely relies on the mean-field framework and the nature of the carriers at the crossover remains unclear to some extent. Here, motivated by the recent demonstration of a BCS polariton laser {[}Hu \textit{et al.}, arXiv:1902.00142{]} and based on a simplified short-range description of…
We build a holographic model for the pairing fluctuation pseudogap phase in fermionic high temperature superconductivity/superfluidity based on the BCS-BEC crossover scenario. The pseudogap originates from incoherent Cooper pairing and has been observed in recent cold atom experiments. The strength of Cooper pairing and hence the BCS-BEC crossover is controlled by an effective 4-Fermi interaction and we argue that the double-trace deformation for charged scalar operator is a close analog in large N field theories. We employ the double-trace deformed Abelian Higgs model of holographic supercond…
The physics of the crossover between weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and strong-coupling Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) limits gives a unified framework of quantum bound (superfluid) states of interacting fermions. This crossover has been studied in the ultracold atomic systems, but is extremely difficult to be realized for electrons in solids. Recently, the superconducting semimetal FeSe with a transition temperature $T_{\rm c}=8.5$ K has been found to be deep inside the BCS-BEC crossover regime. Here we report experimental signatures of preformed Cooper pairing in FeSe below $T…
We investigate magnetic properties and strong coupling corrections in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas. Within the framework of an extended $T$-matrix theory, we calculate the spin susceptibility $χ$ above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. In the crossover region, the formation of preformed Cooper pairs is shown to cause a non-monotonic temperature dependence of $χ$, which is similar to the so-called spin-gap phenomenon observed in the under-doped regime of high-$T_{c}$ cuprates. From this beh…
We study the character change of the pionic condensation at finite isospin chemical potential μ_\mathrm{I} by adopting the linear sigma model as a non-local interaction between quarks. At low |μ_\mathrm{I}| the condensation is purely bosonic, then the Cooper pairing around the Fermi surface grows gradually as |μ_\mathrm{I}| increases. This q-\bar q pairing is weakly coupled in comparison with the case of the q-q pairing that leads to color superconductivity.
The rapid experimental progress of ultra-cold dipolar fermions opens up a whole new opportunity to investigate novel many-body physics of fermions. In this article, we review theoretical studies of the Fermi liquid theory and Cooper pairing instabilities of both electric and magnetic dipolar fermionic systems from the perspective of unconventional symmetries. When the electric dipole moments are aligned by the external electric field, their interactions exhibit the explicit $d_{r^2-3z^2}$ anisotropy. The Fermi liquid properties, including the single-particle spectra, thermodynamic susceptibili…
We investigate the BCS-BEC crossover taking into account an additional three-body interaction, which is essentially the scattering between the Cooper pairs and the newly formed bosons. We show that if the two-body interaction is attractive, the presence of this additional three-body term makes the crossover process a nonreversible one. Starting from a stable Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) state, crossover to BCS can be achieved; but if the BCS state is the starting point, instead of a stable BEC region, what the system crosses over to is a metastable condensed state.
Very recently quasi two-dimensional (2D) systems made of attractive fermionic alkali-metal atoms with a widely tunable interaction due to Fano-Feshbach resonances have been realized. In this way it has been achieved the 2D crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime of weakly-interacting Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate regime strongly bound dimers. These experiments pave the way to the investigation of 2D strongly-interacting attractive fermions during the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition from a low-temperature superfluid phase characterized by quasi-conden…
We generalize the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover of two-component fermions, which is realized by tuning the $s$-wave scattering length $a$ between the fermions, to the case of an arbitrary effective range $r_{\rm e}$. By using the Nozières-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) approach, we show another crossover by changing $r_{\rm e}$ and present several similarities and differences between these two crossovers. Furthermore, the region ($r_{\rm e}>a/2$) where the effective range expansion breaks down and the Hamiltonian becomes non-Hermitian is found, being consistent w…
The symmetry properties of the Cooper pairing problem for multi-component ultra-cold dipolar molecular systems are investigated. The dipolar anisotropy provides a natural and robust mechanism for both triplet and singlet Cooper pairing to first order in the interaction strength. With a purely dipolar interaction, the triplet $p_z$-like polar pairing is the most dominant. A short-range attractive interaction can enhance the singlet pairing to be nearly degenerate with the triplet pairing. We point out that these two pairing channels can mix by developing a relative phase of $\pm\fracπ{2}$, thus…
We show that the long-distance behavior of the two-body density correlation functions and the Cooper-pair probability density of a balanced mixture of a two-component Fermi gas at $T = 0$, is universal along the BEC-BCS crossover. Our result is demonstrated by numerically solving the mean-field BCS model for different finite short-range atomic interaction potentials. We find an analytic expression for the correlation length in terms of the chemical potential and the energy gap at zero momentum.
We develop a Hamiltonian that describes the time-dependent formation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of fermionic atoms as a result of slowly sweeping through a Feshbach resonance. In contrast to many other calculations in the field (see e.g. [1-4]), our Hamiltonian includes the leading post-adiabatic effects that arise because the crossover proceeds at a non-zero sweep rate. We apply a path integral approach and a stationary phase approximation for the molecular zero momentum background, which is a good approximation for narrow resona…
We show that the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state (BCS) and the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) sides of the BCS-BEC crossover can be rigorously distinguished from each other by the extrema of the spectrum of the fermionic excitations. Moreover, we demonstrate that this formal distinction is realized as a non-equilibrium phase transition under radio frequency radiation. The BEC phase remains translationally invariant, whereas the BCS phase transforms into the supersolid phase. For a two-dimensional system this effect occurs at arbitrary small amplitude of the radiation field.
We investigate the formation of Bose-Einstein condensation and population imbalance in a three-component Fermi superfluid by increasing the U(3) invariant attractive interaction. We consider the system at zero temperature in three dimensions and also in two dimensions. Within the mean-field theory, we derive explicit formulas for number densities, gap order parameter, condensate density and condensate fraction of the uniform system, and analyze them in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular …
We investigate a two-component Fermi gas with unequal spin populations along the BCS-BEC crossover. By using the extended BCS equations and the concept of off-diagonal-long-range-order we derive a formula for the condensate number of Cooper pairs as a function of energy gap, average chemical potential, imbalance chemical potential and temperature. Then we study the zero-temperature condensate fraction of Cooper pairs by varying interaction strength and polarization, finding a depletion of the condensate fraction by increasing the population imbalance. We also consider explicitly the presence o…
Using mean-field theory for the Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer (BCS) to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover we investigate the ground state thermodynamic properties of an interacting homogeneous Fermi gas. The interatomic interactions modeled through a finite range potential allows us to explore the entire region from weak to strong interacting regimes with no approximations. To exhibit the thermodynamic behavior as a function of the potential parameters in the whole crossover region, we concentrate in studying the contact variable, the thermodynamic conjugate of the inverse of the s-wave s…
We calculate the parameters of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation of a three-dimensional attractive Fermi gas around the superfluid critical temperature. We compare different levels of approximation throughout the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) regime. We show that the inclusion of Gaussian fluctuations strongly modifies the values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameters approaching the BEC regime of the crossover. We investigate the reliability of the Ginzburg-Landau theory, with fluctuations, studying the behavior of the coherence length and of the critical ro…
