We construct a manifestly diffeomorphism invariant Wilsonian (Exact) Renormalization Group for classical gravity, and begin the construction for quantum gravity. We demonstrate that the effective action can be computed without gauge fixing the diffeomorphism invariance, and also without introducing a background space-time. We compute classical contributions both within a background-independent framework and by perturbing around a fixed background, and verify that the results are equivalent. We derive the exact Ward identities for actions and kernels and verify consistency. We formulate two forms of the flow equation corresponding to the two choices of classical fixed-point: the Gaussian fixed point, and the scale invariant interacting fixed point using curvature-squared terms. We suggest how this programme may completed to a fully quantum construction.
Physics in (canonical) quantum gravity needs to be manifestly diffeomorphism-invariant. Consequently, physical observables need to be formulated in terms of manifestly diffeomorphism-invariant operators, which are necessarily composite. This makes an evaluation in general involved, even if the concrete implementation of quantum gravity should be treatable (semi-)perturbatively in general. A mechanism developed by Fröhlich, Morchio and Strocchi for flat-space-time quantum field theory may also be applicable in this case. It may be possible to test this mechanism with methods like dynamical tria…
This thesis concerns research undertaken in two related topics concerning high-energy gravitational physics. The first is the construction of a manifestly diffeomorphism-invariant Exact Renormalization Group (ERG). This is a procedure that constructs effective theories of gravity by integrating out high-energy modes down to an ultraviolet cutoff scale without gauge-fixing. The manifest diffeomorphism invariance enables us to construct a fully background-independent formulation. This thesis will explore both the fixed-background and background-independent forms of the manifestly diffeomorphism-…
We formulate quantum electrodynamics on the basis of gauge (or BRST) covariant diffusion equations of fields. This is a particular example of the gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG). The resulting Wilson action fulfills a simple gauge Ward--Takahashi identity. We solve the GFERG equation around the Gaussian fixed point to the second order in gauge coupling and obtain the 1-loop beta function and anomalous dimensions. The anomalous dimension of the electron field coincides with that of the fermion field diffused by a gauge covariant flow equation of Lüscher.
We present a manifestly local, diffeomorphism invariant and locally Poincare invariant formulation of vacuum energy sequestering. In this theory, quantum vacuum energy generated by matter loops is cancelled by auxiliary fields. The auxiliary fields decouple from gravity almost completely. Their only residual effect is an a priori arbitrary, finite contribution to the curvature of the background geometry, which is radiatively stable. Its value is to be determined by a measurement, like the finite part of any radiatively stable UV-sensitive quantity in quantum field theory.
We show how the Weyl anomaly generated by gauge fields, can be computed from manifestly gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant exact renormalization group equations, without having to fix the gauge at any stage. Regularisation is provided by covariant higher derivatives and by embedding the Maxwell field into a spontaneously broken $U(1|1)$ supergauge theory. We first provide a realisation that leaves behind two versions of the original $U(1)$ gauge field, and then construct a manifestly $U(1|1)$ supergauge invariant flow equation which leaves behind only the original Maxwell field in th…
We derive an exact functional renormalization group equation for the projectable version of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The flow equation encodes the gravitational degrees of freedom in terms of the lapse function, shift vector and spatial metric and is manifestly invariant under background foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms. Its relation to similar flow equations for gravity in the metric formalism is discussed in detail, and we argue that the space of action functionals, invariant under the full diffeomorphism group, forms a subspace of the latter invariant under renormalization group transfo…
The concept of electric-magnetic duality can be extended to linearized gravity. It has indeed been established that in four dimensions, the Pauli-Fierz action (quadratic part of the Einstein-Hilbert action) can be cast in a form that is manifestly invariant under duality rotations in the internal 2-plane of the spacetime curvature and its dual. In order to achieve this manifestly duality-invariant form, it is necessary to introduce two "prepotentials", which form a duality multiplet. These prepotentials enjoy interesting gauge invariance symmetries, which are, for each, linearized diffeomorphi…
Inertial and gravitational mass or energy-momentum need not be the same for virtual quantum states. Separating their roles naturally leads to the gauge theory of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of an inner four-dimensional space. The gauge-fixed action and the path integral measure occurring in the generating functional for the quantum Green functions of the theory are shown to obey a BRST-type symmetry. The related Zinn-Justin-type equation restricting the corresponding quantum effective action is established. This equation limits the infinite parts of the quantum effective action to have t…
A manifestly diffeomorphism-invariant approach to canonical quantum gravity requires to use composite operators. These can be considered to be bound states of matter and/or gravitons, intrinsically non-perturbative objects. An analytical approach to determine the properties of such bound states could be the Fröhlich-Morchio-Strocchi mechanism. We explore the necessary technology by applying it to various $n$-point functions, including geon propagators and black-hole-particle vertices.
In this article we discuss an implementation of renormalization group ideas to spin foam models, where there is no a priori length scale with which to define the flow. In the context of the continuum limit of these models, we show how the notion of cylindrical consistency of path integral measures gives a natural analogue of Wilson's RG flow equations for background-independent systems. We discuss the conditions for the continuum measures to be diffeomorphism-invariant, and consider both exact and approximate examples.
We explore the nonperturbative renormalization group flow of Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) on an infinite dimensional theory space. We consider "conformally reduced" gravity where only fluctuations of the conformal factor are quantized and employ the Local Potential Approximation for its effective average action. The requirement of "background independence" in quantum gravity entails a partial differential equation governing the scale dependence of the potential for the conformal factor which differs significantly from that of a scalar matter field. In the infinite dimensional space of potent…
We consider the renormalization of general gauge theories on curved space-time background, with the main assumption being the existence of a gauge-invariant and diffeomorphism invariant regularization. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism one can show that the theory possesses gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant renormalizability at quantum level, up to an arbitrary order of the loop expansion. Starting from this point we discuss the locality of the counterterms and the general prescription for constructing the power-counting renormalizable theories on curved background.
The renormalization group (RG) properties of quantum gravity are explored, using the vielbein and the spin connection as the fundamental field variables. The scale dependent effective action is required to be invariant both under space time diffeomorphisms and local frame rotations. The nonperturbative RG equation is solved explicitly on the truncated theory space defined by a three parameter family of Holst-type actions which involve a running Immirzi parameter. We find evidence for the existence of an asymptotically safe fundamental theory, probably inequivalent to metric quantum gravity con…
The functional renormalization group equation for projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is used to derive the non-perturbative beta functions for the Newton's constant, cosmological constant and anisotropy parameter. The resulting coupled differential equations are studied in detail and exemplary RG trajectories are constructed numerically. The beta functions possess a non-Gaussian fixed point and a one-parameter family of Gaussian fixed points. One of the Gaussian fixed points corresponds to the Einstein-Hilbert action with vanishing cosmological constant and constitutes a saddle point with one…
A manifestly diffeomorphism invariant exact renormalization group requires extra diffeomorphism invariant ultraviolet regularisation at some effective cutoff scale $Λ$. This motivates construction of a `Parisi-Sourlas' supergravity, in analogy with the gauge theory case, where the superpartner fields have the wrong spin-statistics such that they can become Pauli-Villars regulator fields after spontaneous symmetry breaking. We show that in contrast to gauge theory, the free theory around flat space is already non-trivial and in a sense already displays some spontaneous symmetry breaking. We sho…
We explore the properties of a recently proposed background independent exact renormalization group approach to gauge theories and gravity. In the process we also develop the machinery needed to study it rigorously. The proposal comes with some advantages. It preserves gauge invariance manifestly, avoids introducing unphysical fields, such as ghosts and Pauli-Villars fields, and does not require gauge-fixing. However, we show that in the simple case of SU(N) Yang-Mills it does not completely regularise the longitudinal part of vertex functions already at one loop, invalidating certain methods …
Based on a family of indefinite unitary representations of the diffeomorphism group of an oriented smooth $4$-manifold, a manifestly covariant $4$ dimensional and non-perturbative algebraic quantum field theory formulation of gravity is exhibited. More precisely among the bounded linear operators acting on these representation spaces we identify algebraic curvature tensors hence a net of local quantum observables can be constructed from $C^*$-algebras generated by local curvature tensors and vector fields. This algebraic quantum field theory is extracted from structures provided by an oriented…
This topical review gives a comprehensive overview and assessment of recent results in Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT), a modern formulation of lattice gravity, whose aim is to obtain a theory of quantum gravity nonperturbatively from a scaling limit of the lattice-regularized theory. In this manifestly diffeomorphism-invariant approach one has direct, computational access to a Planckian spacetime regime, which is explored with the help of invariant quantum observables. During the last few years, there have been numerous new and important developments and insights concerning the theory's…
In this technical note we introduce a manifestly gauge-invariant and supersymmetric procedure to regularize and renormalize one-loop divergences of chiral multiplets in two-dimensional N=(2,2) theories in curved spacetime. We apply the method, a version of Pauli-Villars regularization, to known examples of supersymmetric localization and demonstrate that the partition functions are renormalized. An accompanying ancillary file, a Mathematica notebook, implements the relevant supergravity transformations.
We show that the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) provides a natural regularisation of the Quantum Master Equation such that to first order the BRST algebra closes on local functionals spanned by the eigenoperators with constant couplings. We then apply this to quantum gravity. Around the Gaussian fixed point, RG properties of the conformal factor of the metric allow the construction of a Hilbert space $\mathfrak{L}$ of renormalizable interactions, non-perturbative in $\hbar$, and involving arbitrarily high powers of the gravitational fluctuations. We show that diffeomorphism invariance is…
Inspired by recent studies on string theory with non-geometric fluxes, we develop a differential geometry calculus combining usual diffeomorphisms with what we call beta-diffeomorphisms. This allows us to construct a manifestly bi-invariant Einstein-Hilbert type action for the graviton, the dilaton and a dynamical (quasi-)symplectic structure. The equations of motion of this symplectic gravity theory, further generalizations and the relation to the usual form of the string effective action are discussed. The Seiberg-Witten limit, known for open strings to relate commutative with non-commutativ…

The renormalization of general gauge theories on flat and curved space-time backgrounds is considered within the Sp(2)-covariant quantization method. We assume the existence of a gauge-invariant and diffeomorphism invariant regularization. Using the Sp(2)-covariant formalism one can show that the theory possesses gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant renormalizability to all orders in the loop expansion and the extended BRST symmetry after renormalization is preserved. The advantage of the Sp(2)-method compared to the standard Batalin-Vilkovisky approach is that, in reducible theories, …
We obtain a manifestly background independent BRST quantization of the $\N=4$ supersymmetric spinning particle. We show that nilpotency of the BRST charge $Q$ implies the Einstein equations admitting a cosmological constant of indefinite sign. The physical graviton states are given by the vertex operator, obtained by an infinitesimal variation of $Q$, acting on diffeomorphism ghost states. In addition, the tree-point graviton scattering vertex is correctly reproduced by the worldline computation with these vertex operators.
This paper is a self contained review of the Loop Variable approach to string theory. The Exact Renormalization Group is applied to a world sheet theory describing string propagation in a general background involving both massless and massive modes. This gives interacting equations of motion for the modes of the string. Loop variable techniques are used to obtain gauge invariant equations. Since this method is not tied to flat space time or any particular background metric, it is manifestly background independent. The technique can be applied to both open and closed strings. Thus gauge invaria…
