We prove that any regular integral invariant of volume-preserving transformations is equivalent to the helicity. Specifically, given a functional $\mathcal I$ defined on exact divergence-free vector fields of class $C^1$ on a compact 3-manifold that is associated with a well-behaved integral kernel, we prove that $\mathcal I$ is invariant under arbitrary volume-preserving diffeomorphisms if and only if it is a function of the helicity.
We compute the helicity of a vector field preserving a regular contact form on a closed three-dimensional manifold, and improve results by J.-M. Gambaudo and É. Ghys [GG97] relating the helicity of the suspension of a surface isotopy to the Calabi invariant of the latter. Based on these results, we provide positive answers to two questions posed by V. I. Arnold [Arn86]. In the presence of a regular contact form that is also preserved, the helicity extends to an invariant of an isotopy of volume preserving homeomorphisms, and is invariant under conjugation by volume preserving homeomorphisms. A…
We introduce an alternative approach to the third order helicity of a volume preserving vector field $B$, which leads us to a lower bound for the $L^2$-energy of $B$. The proposed approach exploits correspondence between the Milnor $\barμ_{123}$-invariant for 3-component links and the homotopy invariants of maps to configuration spaces, and we provide a simple geometric proof of this fact in the case of Borromean links. Based on these connections we develop a formulation for the third order helicity of $B$ on invariant \emph{unlinked} domains of $B$, and provide Arnold's style ergodic interpre…
We prove that any regular Casimir in 3D magnetohydrodynamics is a function of the magnetic helicity and cross-helicity. In other words, these two helicities are the only independent regular integral invariants of the coadjoint action of the MHD group $\text{SDiff}(M)\ltimes\mathfrak X^*(M)$, which is the semidirect product of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the dual space of its Lie algebra.
Let $q:M\to M$ be a volume-preserving diffeomorphism of a smooth manifold $M$. We study the possibility to present $q$ as the Poincaré map, corresponding to a volume-preserving vector field on $\mathbb{T}\times M$, $\mathbb{T} = \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$.
We prove that any real-analytic, volume-preserving action of a lattice $Γ$ in a simple Lie group with $\Qrank(Γ)\geq 7$ on a closed 4-manifold of nonzero Euler characteristic factors through a finite group action.
We construct a new invariant-the trunkenness-for volume-perserving vector fields on S^3 up to volume-preserving diffeomorphism. We prove that the trunkenness is independent from the helicity and that it is the limit of a knot invariant (called the trunk) computed on long pieces of orbits.
We show that every volume preserving codimension one Anosov flow on a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension greater than three admits a global cross section and is therefore topologically conjugate to a suspension of a linear toral automorphism. This proves a conjecture of Verjovsky from the 1970's in the volume preserving case.
We prove that any C1-stably weakly shadowable volume-preserving diffeomorphism defined on a compact manifold displays a dominated splitting E + F. Moreover, both E and F are volume-hyperbolic. Finally, we prove the version of this result for divergence-free vector fields. As a consequence, in low dimensions, we obtain global hyperbolicity.
In this paper, we prove that for $\mathcal{C}^1$ generic volume-preserving Anosov diffeomorphisms of a compact Riemannian manifold, Livšic measurable rigidity theorem holds. We also prove that for $\mathcal{C}^1$ generic volume-preserving Anosov flows of a compact Riemannian manifold, Livšic measurable rigidity theorem holds.
Baraviera and Bonatti proved that it is possible to perturb, in the c^1 topology, a volume-preserving and partial hyperbolic diffeomorphism in order to obtain a non-zero sum of all the Lyapunov exponents in the central direction. In this article we obtain the analogous result for volume-preserving flows.
We prove that every 3-manifold possesses a $C^1$, volume-preserving flow with no fixed points and no closed trajectories. The main construction is a volume-preserving version of the Schweitzer plug. We also prove that every 3-manifold possesses a volume-preserving, $C^\infty$ flow with discrete closed trajectories and no fixed points (as well as a PL flow with the same geometry), which is needed for the first result. The proof uses a Dehn-twisted Wilson-type plug which also preserves volume.
Let f be a volume-preserving diffeomorphism of a closed C1 n-dimensional Riemannian manifold M: In this paper, we prove the equivalence between the following conditions: (a) f belongs to the C1-interior of the set of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms which satisfy the weak shadowing property, (b) f belongs to the C1-interior of the set of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms which satisfy the limit weak shadowing property, (c) f is Anosov.
We prove that a C1-generic volume preserving diffeomorphism has a symbolic extension if and only if this diffeomorphism is partial hyperbolic. This result is obtained by means of good dichotomies. In particular, we prove Bonatti's conjecture in the volume preserving scenario. More precisely, in the complement of Anosov diffeomorphisms we have densely robust heterodimensional cycles.
We study quadratic, volume preserving diffeomorphisms whose inverse is also quadratic. Such maps generalize the Hénon area preserving map and the family of symplectic quadratic maps studied by Moser. In particular, we investigate a family of quadratic volume preserving maps in three space for which we find a normal form and study invariant sets. We also give an alternative proof of a theorem by Moser classifying quadratic symplectic maps.
Let f be a volume-preserving diffeomorphism of a closed C^\infty n-dimensional Riemannian manifold M: In this paper, we prove the equivalence between the following conditions: (a) f belongs to the C1-interior of the set of volume-preserving diffeoeomorphisms which satisfy the inverse shadowing property with respect to the continuous methods. (b) f belongs to the C1-interior of the set of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms which satisfy the weak inverse shadowing property with respect to the continuous methods. (c) f belongs to the C1-interior of the set of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms whic…
The purpose of this paper is to establish limit laws for volume preserving almost Anosov flows on $3$-three manifolds having a neutral periodic of cubic saddle type. In the process, we derive estimates for the Dulac maps for cubic neutral saddles in planar vector fields.
Hayashi has extended a result of Mañé, proving that every diffeomorphism $f$ which has a $C^1$-neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$, where all periodic points of any $g\in\mathcal{U}$ are hyperbolic, it is an Axiom A diffeomorphism. Here, we prove the analogous result in the volume preserving scenario.
We prove that a divergence-free and C1-robustly transitive vector field has no singularities. Moreover, if the vector field is C4 then the linear Poincare flow associated to it admits a dominated splitting over M.
We prove that SL(n,Q) has no nontrivial, C-infinity, volume-preserving action on any compact manifold of dimension strictly less than n. More generally, suppose G is a connected, isotropic, almost-simple algebraic group over Q, such that the simple factors of every localization of G have rank at least two. If there does not exist a nontrivial homomorphism from G(R) to GL(d,C), then every C-infinity, volume-preserving action of G(Q) on any compact d-dimensional manifold must factor through a finite group.
Let $M$ be a compact manifold and $\text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ be the set of $C^1$ volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$. We prove that there is a residual subset $\mathcal {R}\subset \text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ such that each $f\in \mathcal{R}$ is a continuity point of the map $g\to h_m(g)$ from $\text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ to $\mathbb{R}$, where $h_m(g)$ is the metric entropy of $g$ with respect to volume measure $m$.
Right-handed and Reeb vector fields are two rich classes of vector fields on closed, oriented three-manifolds. Prior work of Dehornoy and Florio-Hryniewicz has produced many examples of Reeb vector fields which are right-handed. We prove a result in the other direction. We show that the closed two-form associated to a volume-preserving right-handed vector field is contact-type. This implies that any volume-preserving right-handed vector field is equal to a Reeb vector field after multiplication by a positive smooth function. Combining our result with theorems of Ghys and Taubes shows that any …
We study toplogical properties of attracting sets for automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^k$. Our main result is that a generic volume preserving automorphism has a hyperbolic fixed point with a dense stable manifold. We prove the same result for volume preserving maps tangent to the identity. On the other hand, we show that an attracting set can only contain a neighborhood of the fixed point if the fixed point is an attracting fixed point. We will see that the latter does not hold in the non-autonomous setting.
We consider the set of partially hyperbolic symplectic diffeomorphisms which are accessible, have 2-dimensional center bundle and satisfy some pinching and bunching conditions. In this set, we prove that the non-uniformly hyperbolic maps are $C^r$ open and there exists a $C^r$ open and dense subset of continuity points for the center Lyapunov exponents. We also generalize these results to volume-preserving systems.
For a volume preserving map, the exit time, averaged over the incoming set of a region, is given by the ratio of the measure of the accessible subset of the region to that of the incoming set. This result is primarily of interest to show two things: first it gives a simple bound on the algebraic decay exponent of the survival probability. Second, it gives a tool which permits the computation of the measure of the accessible set. We use this to find the measure of the bounded orbits for Hénon's quadratic map.
In this paper, we provide a new criterion for the stable transitivity of volume preserving finite generated group on any compact Riemannian manifold. As one of our applications, we generalised a result of Dolgopyat and Krikorian in \cite{DK} and obtained stable transitivity for random rotations on the sphere in any dimension. As another application, we showed that for $\infty \geq r \geq 2$, any $C^r$ volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $g$ on any compact Riemannian manifold $M$ having sufficiently Hölder stable or unstable distribution, for any sufficiently large integer $K$…
Invariant tori play a fundamental role in the dynamics of symplectic and volume-preserving maps. Codimension-one tori are particularly important as they form barriers to transport. Such tori foliate the phase space of integrable, volume-preserving maps with one action and $d$ angles. For the area-preserving case, Greene's residue criterion is often used to predict the destruction of tori from the properties of nearby periodic orbits. Even though KAM theory applies to the three-dimensional case, the robustness of tori in such systems is still poorly understood. We study a three-dimensional, rev…
Let $M$ be a closed manifold. Polterovich constructed a linear map from the vector space of quasi-morphisms on the fundamental group $π_{1}(M)$ of $M$ to the space of quasi-morphisms on the identity component ${\rm Diff}_Ω^{\infty} (M)_{0}$ of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$. In this paper, the restriction $H^{1}(π_{1}(M); {\mathbb R})\to H^{1}({\rm Diff}_Ω^{\infty} (M)_{0} ; {\mathbb R})$ of the linear map is studied and its relationship with the flux homomorphism is described.
