An extension of the CCS-method [Chem. Phys. 2004, 304, p. 103-120] for simulating non-adiabatic dynamics with quantum effects of the nuclei is put forward.
The time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the motion of the nuclei is solved in a moving basis set. The basis set is guided by classical trajectories, which can hop stochastically between different electronic potential energy surfaces. The non-adiabatic transitions are modelled by a modified version of Tully's fewest switches algorithm. The trajectories consist of Gaussians in the phase space of the nuclei (coherent states) combined with amplitudes for an electronic wave function. The time-dependent matrix elements between different coherent states determine the amplitude of each trajectory in the total multistate wave function; the diagonal matrix elements determine the hopping probabilities and gradients. In this way, both intereference effects and non-adiabatic transitions can be described in a very compact fashion, leading to the exact solution if convergence with respect to the number of trajectories is achieved and the potential energy surfaces are known globally.
The method is tested on a 2D model for a conical intersection [J. Chem. Phys., 1996, 104, p. 5517], where a nuclear wavepacket encircles the point of degeneracy between two potential energy surfaces and intereferes with itself. These intereference effects are absent in classical trajectory-based molecular dynamics but can be fully incorporated if trajectories are replaced by surface hopping coupled coherent states.
Conical intersections are degeneracies between electronic states and are very common in nature. It has been found that they can also be created both by standing or by running laser waves. The latter are called light-induced conical intersections. It is well known that conical intersections are the sources for numerous topological effects which are manifested e.g. in the appearance of the geometric or Berry phase. In one of our former works by incorporating the diabatic-to-adiabatic transformation angle with the line-integral technique we have calculated the Berry-phase of the light-induced con…
Many recent experimental ultrafast spectroscopy studies have hinted at non-adiabatic dynamics indicating the existence of conical intersections, but their direct observation remains a challenge. The rapid change of the energy gap between the electronic states complicated their observation by requiring bandwidths of several electron volts. In this manuscript, we propose to use the combined information of different X-ray pump-probe techniques to identify the conical intersection. We theoretically study the conical intersection in pyrrole using transient X-ray absorption, time-resolved X-ray spon…
A semiclassical non-adiabatic phase-space approach to molecular translations and rotations: A new picture of surface hopping and electronic inertial effects
We investigate two well-known approaches for extending the fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) algorithm to periodic time-dependent couplings. The first formalism acts as if the instantaneous adiabatic electronic states were standard adiabatic states, which just happen to evolve in time. The second formalism replaces the role of the usual adiabatic states by the time-independent adiabatic Floquet states. For a set of modified Tully model problems, the Floquet FSSH (F-FSSH) formalism gives a better estimate for both transmission and reflection probabilities than the instantaneous adiabatic F…
We theoretically investigate internal conversion processes of a photoexcited molecule in a condensed phase. The molecular system is described by two-dimensional adiabatic ground and excited potential energy surfaces (PESs) that are coupled to heat baths. We study the role of conical intersection (CI) by computing the time evolution of wavepackets for the PESs both with and without the CI. For this purpose, we employ the multi-state quantum Fokker-Planck equation (MSQFPE) for a two-dimensional Wigner space. Numerically integrating the MSQFPE, we investigated the time evolution of wavepackets fo…
Non-adiabatic chemical reactions involving continuous circularly polarized light (cw CPL) have not attracted as much attention as dynamics in unpolarized/linearly polarized light. However, including circularly (in contrast to linearly) polarized light allows one to effectively introduce a complex-valued time-dependent Hamiltonian, which offers a new path for control or exploration through the introduction of Berry forces. Here, we investigate several inexpensive semiclassical approaches for modeling such nonadiabatic dynamics in the presence of a time-dependent complex-valued Hamiltonian, begi…
The choice of the electronic representation in on-the-fly quantum dynamics is crucial. The adiabatic representation is appealing since adiabatic states are readily available from quantum chemistry packages. The nuclear wavepackets are then expanded in a basis of Gaussian functions, which follow trajectories to explore the potential energy surfaces and approximate the potential using a local expansion of the adiabatic quantities. Nevertheless, the adiabatic representation is plagued with severe limitations when conical intersections are involved: the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections (DBOCs…
Adequate simulation of non-adiabatic dynamics through conical intersection requires account for a non-trivial geometric phase (GP) emerging in electronic and nuclear wave-functions in the adiabatic representation. Popular mixed quantum-classical (MQC) methods, surface hopping and Ehrenfest, do not carry a nuclear wave-function to be able to incorporate the GP into nuclear dynamics. Surprisingly, the MQC methods reproduce ultra-fast interstate crossing dynamics generated with the exact quantum propagation so well as if they contained information about the GP. Using two-dimensional linear vibron…
We investigate two approaches to derive the proper Floquet-based quantum-classical Liouville equation (F-QCLE) for laser-driven electron-nuclear dynamics. The first approach projects the operator form of the standard QCLE onto the diabatic Floquet basis, then transforms to the adiabatic representation. The second approach directly projects the QCLE onto the Floquet adiabatic basis. Both approaches yield a form which is similar to the usual QCLE with two modifications: 1. The electronic degrees of freedom are expanded to infinite dimension. 2. The nuclear motion follows Floquet quasi-energy sur…
The direct observation of non-adiabatic dynamics at conical intersections is a long-standing goal of molecular physics. Novel time-resolved spectroscopies have been proposed which are sensitive to electronic coherences induced by the passage of an excited state wavepacket through a region of conical intersection. Here we demonstrate that inclusion of the geometric phase effect, and its manifestations, is essential for the correct description of the transient electronic coherences that may or may not develop. For electronic states of different symmetry, electronic coherences are suppressed by t…
Fewest-switches surface hopping (FSSH) has emerged as one of the leading methods for modeling the quantum dynamics of molecular systems. While its original formulation was limited to adiabatic populations, the growing interest in the application of FSSH to coherent phenomena prompts the question how one should construct a complete density matrix based on FSSH trajectories. A straightforward solution is to define adiabatic coherences based on wavefunction coefficients. In this Paper, we demonstrate that inconsistencies introduced in the density matrix through such treatment may lead to a violat…
The effect of nuclear dynamics and conical intersections on electronic coherences is investigated employing a two-state, two-mode linear vibronic coupling model. Exact quantum dynamical calculations are performed using the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method (MCTDH). It is found that the presence of a non-adiabatic coupling close to the Franck-Condon point can preserve electronic coherence to some extent. Additionally, the possibility of steering the nuclear wavepackets by imprinting a relative phase between the electronic states during the photoionization process is discussed. I…
We develop a density matrix formalism to describe coupled electron-nuclear dynamics. To this end we introduce an effective Hamiltonian formalism that describes electronic transitions and small (quantum) nuclear fluctuations along a classical trajectory of the nuclei. Using this Hamiltonian we derive equations of motion for the electronic occupation numbers and for the nuclear coordinates and momenta. We show that in the limit when the number of nuclear degrees of freedom coupled to a given electronic transition is sufficiently high (i.e., the strong decoherence limit), the equations of motion …
We present a detailed study of the decoherence correction to surface-hopping that was recently derived from the exact factorization approach. Ab initio multiple spawning calculations that use the same initial conditions and same electronic structure method are used as a reference for three molecules: ethylene, methaniminium cation, and fulvene, for which non-adiabatic dynamics follows a photo-excitation. A comparison with the Granucci-Persico energy-based decoherence correction, and the augmented fewest-switches surface-hopping scheme shows that the three decoherence-corrected methods operate …
Quantum mechanical and quasiclassical investigation of the time domain nonadiabatic dynamics of NO2 close to the bottom of the X2A1-A2B2 conical intersection
Ongoing developments in ultrafast X-ray sources offer powerful new means of probing the com- plex non-adiabatically coupled structural and electronic dynamics of photoexcited molecules. These non-Born-Oppenheimer effects are governed by general electronic degeneracies termed conical in- tersections which play a key role, analogous to that of a transition state, in the electronic-nuclear dynamics of excited molecules. Using high level ab initio quantum dynamics simulations, we studied time-resolved X-ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopy (TRXAS and TRXPS, respectively) of the prototypic…
For future use in modeling photoexcited dynamics and intersystem crossing, we calculate spin-adiabatic states and their analytical nuclear gradients within CIS the- ory. These energies and forces should be immediately useful for surface hopping dynamics, which are natural within an adiabatic framework. The resulting code has been implemented within the Q-Chem software and preliminary results suggest that the additional cost of including SOC within the singles-singles block is not large.
Vibrational energies and wave functions of the triplet state of the H3+ ion have been determined. In the calculations, the ground and first excited triplet electronic states are included as well as the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling between them. A diabatization procedure transforming the two adiabatic ab initio potential energy surfaces of the triplet-H3+ state into a 2x2 matrix is employed. The diabatization takes into account the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling and the effect of the geometrical phase due to the conical intersection between the two adiabatic potential surfaces. The results are …
We introduce multistate metadynamics for automatic exploration of conical intersection seams between adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces in molecular systems. By choosing the energy gap between the electronic states as a collective variable the metadynamics drives the system from an arbitrary ground-state configuration toward the intersection seam. Upon reaching the seam, the multistate electronic Hamiltonian is extended by introducing biasing potentials into the off-diagonal elements, and the molecular dynamics is continued on a modified potential energy surface obtained by d…
The Landau--Zener (LZ) type classical-trajectory surface-hopping algorithm is applied to the nonadiabatic nuclear dynamics of the ammonia cation after photoionization of the ground-state neutral molecule to the excited states of the cation. The algorithm employs the recently proposed formula for nonadiabatic LZ transition probabilities derived from the adiabatic potential energy surfaces. The evolution of the populations of the ground state and the two lowest excited adiabatic states is calculated up to 200 fs. The results agree well with quantum simulations available for the first 100 fs base…
The diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction (DBOC) stems from the diagonal second derivative coupling term in the adiabatic representation, and it can have an arbitrary large magnitude when a gap between neighbouring Born-Oppenheimer (BO) potential energy surfaces (PESs) is closing. Nevertheless, DBOC is typically neglected in mixed quantum-classical methods of simulating nonadiabatic dynamics (e.g., fewest-switch surface hopping (FSSH) method). A straightforward addition of DBOC to BO PESs in the FSSH method, FSSH+D, has been shown to lead to numerically much inferior results for models containi…
We present a preliminary extension of the fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) algorithm to the case of complex Hamiltonians as appropriate for modeling the dynamics of photoexcited molecules in magnetic fields. We make ansatze for the direction of momentum rescaling and we account for Berry's phase effects through "magnetic" forces as applicable in the adiabatic limit. Because Berry's phase is a nonlocal, topological characteristic of a set of entangled potential energy surfaces, we find that Tully's local FSSH algorithm can only partially capture the correct physics.
We demonstrate the existence of a strictly non-adiabatic control pathway in deprotonation of the acetylene dication. This pathway is identified experimentally by measuring a kinetic energy shift in an ion coincidence experiment. We use a TDSE simulation to identify which properties most strongly affect our control. We find that resonant control around conical intersections is limited by the speed of non-adiabatic dynamics.
Time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy is emerging as a uniquely powerful tool to probe coupled electronic-nuclear dynamics in photo-excited molecules. Theoretical studies to date have established that time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy is an atom-specific probe of excited-state wave packet passage through a seam of conical intersections (CIs). However, in many molecular systems, there are competing dynamical pathways involving CIs of different electronic and nuclear character. Discerning these pathways remains an important challenge. Here, we demonstrate that time-resolved X-ray…
We present a preliminary surface-hopping approach for modeling intersystem crossing (ISC) dynamics between four electronic states: one singlet and one (triply degenerate) triplet. In order to incorporate all Berry force effects, the algorithm requires that, when moving along an adiabatic surface associated with the triplet manifold, \mycomment{one must also keep track of a quasi-diabatic index (akin to a "$m_s$" quantum number) for each trajectory. For a simple model problem, we find that a great deal of new physics can be captured by our algorithm, setting the stage for larger, more realistic…
Accurate simulation of the non-adiabatic dynamics of molecules in excited electronic states is key to understanding molecular photo-physical processes. Here we present a novel method, based on a semiclassical approximation, that is as efficient as the commonly used mean field Ehrenfest or ad hoc Surface Hopping methods and properly accounts for interference and decoherence effects. This novel method is an extension of Hellers Thawed Gaussian wavepacket dynamics that includes coupling between potential energy surfaces. The accuracy of the method can be systematically improved.
Electronically non-adiabatic effects play an important role in many chemical reactions. How these effects manifest in cold and ultracold chemistry remain largely unexplored. Here, through first principles non-adiabatic quantum dynamics calculations of the Li + LiNa $\to$ Li$_2$ + Na chemical reaction, it is shown that non-adiabatic dynamics induces quantum interference effects that dramatically alter the ultracold rotationally resolved reaction rate coefficients. The interference effect arises from a conical intersection between the ground and an excited electronic state that is energetically …
A software package, called DFTBaby, is published, which provides the electronic structure needed for running non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations at the level of charge-consistent tight-binding DFT. A long-range correction is incorporated to avoid spurious charge transfer states. Excited state energies, their analytic gradients and scalar non-adiabatic couplings are computed using tight-binding TD-DFT. These quantities are fed into a molecular dynamics code, which integrates Newton's equations of motion for the nuclei together with the electronic Schrödinger equation. Non-adiabatic eff…
A new methodology of simulating nonadiabatic dynamics using frozen-width Gaussian wavepackets within the moving crude adiabatic representation with the on-the-fly evaluation of electronic structure is presented. The main feature of the new approach is elimination of any global or local model representation of electronic potential energy surfaces, instead, the electron-nuclear interaction is treated explicitly using the Gaussian integration. As a result, the new scheme does not introduce any uncontrolled approximations. The employed variational principle ensures the energy conservation and leav…
The effect of conical intersections (CIs) on electronic relaxation, transitions from excited states to ground states, is well studied, but their influence on hyperfine quenching in a reactant molecule is not known. Here, we report on ultracold collision dynamics of the hydroxyl free-radical OH with Sr atoms leading to quenching of OH hyperfine states. Our quantum-mechanical calculations of this process reveal that quenching is efficient due to anomalous molecular dynamics in the vicinity of the conical intersection at collinear geometry. We observe wide scattering resonance features in both el…
A general theoretical framework is derived for the recently developed multi-state trajectory (MST) approach from the time dependent Schrödinger equation, resulting in equations of motion for coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics equivalent to Hamilton dynamics or Heisenberg equation based on a new multistate Meyer-Miller (MM) model. The derived MST formalism incorporates both diabatic and adiabatic representations as limiting cases, and reduces to Ehrenfest or Born-Oppenheimer dynamics in the mean field or the single state limits, respectively. By quantizing nuclear dynamics to a particular acti…
Attosecond charge migration is a periodic evolution of the charge density of a molecule on a time scale defined by the energy intervals between the electronic states involved. Here, we report the observation of charge migration in neutral silane (SiH$_4$) in 690~as, its decoherence within 15~fs, and its revival after 40-50~fs using X-ray attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The migration of charge is observed as pairs of quantum beats with a characteristic spectral phase in the transient spectrum. The decay and revival of the degree of electronic coherence is found to be a result of b…
We carried out extensive studies to examine the performance of the fewest-switches surface hopping method in the description of the ultrafast intersystem crossing dynamic of various singlet-triplet (S-T) models by comparison with the results of the exact full quantum dynamics. Different implementation details and some derivative approaches were examined. As expected, it is better to perform the trajectory surface hopping calculations in the spin-adiabatic representation or by the local diabatization approach, instead of in the spin-diabatic representation. The surface hopping method provides r…
