We provide a description of the space of continuous and translation invariant Minkowski valuations $Φ:\mathcal{K}^n\to\mathcal{K}^n$ for which there is an upper and a lower bound for the volume of $Φ(K)$ in terms of the volume of the convex body $K$ itself. Although no invariance with respect to a group acting on the space of convex bodies is imposed, we prove that only two types of operators appear: a family of operators having only cylinders over $(n-1)$-dimensional convex bodies as images, and a second family consisting essentially of 1-homogeneous operators. Using this description, we give improvements of some known characterization results for the difference body.
A convolution representation of continuous translation invariant and SO(n) equivariant Minkowski valuations is established. This is based on a new classification of translation invariant generalized spherical valuations. As applications, Crofton and kinematic formulas for Minkowski valuations are obtained.
A classification of all continuous GL(n) equivariant Minkowski valuations on convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is established. Together with recent results of F.E. Schuster and the author, this article therefore completes the description of all continuous GL(n) intertwining Minkowski valuations.
All SL(n)-contravariant $L_p$-Minkowski valuations on polytopes are completely classified. The prototypes of such valuations turn out to be the asymmetric $L_p$-projection body operators.
For $1 \leq p < \infty$, Ludwig, Haberl and Parapatits classified $L_p$ Minkowski valuations intertwining the special linear group with additional conditions such as homogeneity and continuity. In this paper,a complete classification of $L_p$ Minkowski valuations intertwining the special linear group on polytopes without any additional conditions is established for $p \geq 1$ including $p = \infty$. For $n=3$ and $p=1$, there exist valuations not mentioned before.
All continuous SL(n)-covariant $L_p$-Minkowski valuations defined on convex bodies are completely classified. The $L_p$-moment body operators turn out to be the nontrivial prototypes of such maps.
A complete classification is established of Minkowski valuations on lattice polytopes that intertwine the special linear group over the integers and are translation invariant. In the contravariant case, the only such valuations are multiples of projection bodies. In the equivariant case, the only such valuations are generalized difference bodies combined with multiples of the newly defined discrete Steiner point.
Lutwak's volume inequalities for polar projection bodies of all orders are generalized to polarizations of Minkowski valuations generated by even, zonal measures on the Euclidean unit sphere. This is based on analogues of mixed projection bodies for such Minkowski valuations and a generalization of the notion of centroid bodies. A new integral representation is used to single out Lutwak's inequalities as the strongest among these families of inequalities, which in turn are related to a conjecture on affine quermassintegrals. In the dual setting, a generalization of volume inequalities for inte…
A classification of SL$(n)$ contravariant, continuous function valued valuations on convex bodies is established. Such valuations are natural extensions of SL$(n)$ contravariant $L_p$ Minkowski valuations, the classification of which characterized $L_p$ projection bodies, which are fundamental in the $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski theory, for $p \geq 1$. Hence our result will help to better understand extensions of the $L_p$ Brunn-Minkowski theory. In fact, our results characterize general projection functions which extend $L_p$ projection functions ($p$-th powers of the support functions of $L_p$ proj…
Several open problems concerning Minkowski endomorphisms and Minkowski valuations are solved. More precisely, it is proved that all Minkowski endomorphisms are uniformly continuous but that there exist Minkowski endomorphisms that are not weakly-monotone. This answers questions posed repeatedly by various authors. Furthermore, a recent representation result for Minkowski valuations by Schuster and Wannerer is improved under additional homogeneity assumptions. Also a question related to the structure of Minkowski endomorphisms by the same authors is answered. Finally, it is shown that there exi…
A new integral representation of smooth translation invariant and rotation equivariant even Minkowski valuations is established. Explicit formulas relating previously obtained descriptions of such valuations with the new more accessible one are also derived. Moreover, the action of Alesker's Hard Lefschetz operators on these Minkowski valuations is explored in detail.
A classification of SL$(n)$ contravariant Minkowski valuations on convex functions and a characterization of the projection body operator are established. The associated LYZ measure is characterized. In addition, a new SL$(n)$ covariant Minkowski valuation on convex functions is defined and characterized.
The local Minkowski tensors are valuations on the space of convex bodies in Euclidean space with values in a space of tensor measures. They generalize at the same time the intrinsic volumes, the curvature measures and the isometry covariant Minkowski tensors that were introduced by McMullen and characterized by Alesker. In analogy to the characterization theorems of Hadwiger and Alesker, we give here a complete classification of all locally defined tensor measures on convex bodies that share with the local Minkowski tensors the basic geometric properties of isometry covariance and weak continu…
A description of continuous rigid motion compatible Minkowski valuations is established. As an application, we present a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality for intrinsic volumes of these valuations.
A Steiner type formula for continuous translation invariant Minkowski valuations is established. In combination with a recent result on the symmetry of rigid motion invariant homogeneous bivaluations, this new Steiner type formula is used to obtain a family of Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities for rigid motion intertwining Minkowski valuations.
It is shown that for any sufficiently regular even Minkowski valuation $Φ$ which is homogeneous and intertwines rigid motions, and for any convex body $K$ in a smooth neighborhood of the unit ball, there exists a sequence of positive numbers $(γ_m)_{m=1}^\infty$ such that $(γ_mΦ^m K)_{m=1}^\infty$ converges to the unit ball with respect to the Hausdorff metric.
A complete classification of all continuous GL(n) contravariant Minkowski valuations is established. As an application we present a family of sharp isoperimetric inequalities for such valuations which generalize the classical Petty projection inequality.
New Orlicz Brunn-Minkowski inequalities are established for rigid motion compatible Minkowski valuations of arbitrary degree. These extend classical log-concavity properties of intrinsic volumes and generalize seminal results of Lutwak and others. Two different approaches which refine previously employed techniques are explored. It is shown that both lead to the same class of Minkowski valuations for which these inequalities hold. An appendix by Semyon Alesker contains the proof of a new classification of generalized translation invariant valuations.
It is shown that for any sufficiently regular even Minkowski valuation $Φ$ which is homogeneous and intertwines rigid motions, there exists a neighborhood of the unit ball, where balls are the only solutions to the fixed-point problem $Φ^2 K = αK$. This significantly generalizes results by Ivaki for projection bodies and suggests, via the Lutwak--Schneider class reduction technique, a new approach to Petty's conjectured projection inequality.
The projection body operator Π, which associates with every convex body in Euclidean space Rn its projection body, is a continuous valuation, it is invariant under translations and equivariant under rotations. It is also well known that Π maps the set of polytopes in Rn into itself. We show that Π is the only non-trivial operator with these properties.
The Minkowski tensors are valuations on the space of convex bodies in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with values in a space of symmetric tensors, having additional covariance and continuity properties. They are extensions of the intrinsic volumes, and as these, they are the subject of classification theorems, and they admit localizations in the form of measure-valued valuations. For these local tensor valuations, restricted to convex polytopes, a classification theorem has been proved recently, under the assumption of isometry covariance, but without any continuity assumption. This characterization result is…
We consider a functional $\mathcal F$ on the space of convex bodies in $\R^n$ defined as follows: ${\mathcal F}(K)$ is the integral over the unit sphere of a fixed continuous functions $f$ with respect to the area measure of the convex body $K$. We prove that if $\mathcal F$ satisfies an inequality of Brunn--Minkowski type, then $f$ is the support function of a convex body, i.e., $\mathcal F$ is a mixed volume. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of translation invariant, continuous valuations which are homogeneous of degree $n-1$ and satisfy a Brunn--Minkowski type inequality.
We prove the validity of the $p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the intrinsic volume $V_k$, $k=2,\dots, n-1$, of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in a neighborhood of the unit ball, for $0\le p<1$. We also prove that this inequality does not hold true on the entire class of convex bodies of $\mathbb{R}^n$, when $p$ is sufficiently close to $0$.
We investigate Minkowski additive, continuous, and translation invariant operators $Φ:\mathcal{K}^n\to\mathcal{K}^n$ defined on the family of convex bodies such that the volume of the image $Φ(K)$ is bounded from above and below by multiples of the volume of the convex body $K$, uniformly in $K$. We obtain a representation result for an infinite subcone contained in the cone formed by this type of operators. Under the additional assumption of monotonicity or $SO(n)$-equivariance, we obtain new characterization results for the difference body operator.
We generalize valuations on polyhedral cones to valuations on fans. For fans induced by hyperplane arrangements, we show a correspondence between rotation-invariant valuations and deletion-restriction invariants. In particular, we define a characteristic polynomial for fans in terms of spherical intrinsic volumes and show that it coincides with the usual characteristic polynomial in the case of hyperplane arrangements. This gives a simple deletion-restriction proof of a result of Klivans-Swartz. The metric projection of a cone is a piecewise-linear map, whose underlying fan prompts a generaliz…
Let $C$ be a closed convex cone in ${\mathbb R}^n$, pointed and with interior points. We consider sets of the form $A=C\setminus A^\bullet$, where $A^\bullet\subset C$ is a closed convex set. If $A$ has finite volume (Lebesgue measure), then $A$ is called a $C$-coconvex set. The family of $C$-coconvex sets is closed under the addition $\oplus$ defined by $C\setminus(A_1\oplus A_2)= (C\setminus A_1)+(C\setminus A_2)$. We develop first steps of a Brunn--Minkowski theory for $C$-coconvex sets, which relates this addition to the notion of volume. In particular, we establish the equality conditions…
Very recently J. Kotrbaty has proven general inequalities for translation invariant smooth valuations formally analogous to the Hodge- Riemann bilinear relations in the Kahler geometry. The goal of this note is to apply Kotrbaty's theorem to obtain a few apparently new inequalities for mixed volumes of convex bodies.
All upper semicontinuous and SL(n) invariant valuations on convex bodies containing the origin in their interiors are completely classified. Each such valuation is shown to be a linear combination of the Euler characteristic, the volume, the volume of the polar body, and the recently discovered Orlicz surface areas.
For valuations on convex bodies in Euclidean spaces, there is by now a long series of characterization and classification theorems. The classical template is Hadwiger's theorem, saying that every rigid motion invariant, continuous, real-valued valuation on convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a linear combination of the intrinsic volumes. For tensor-valued valuations, under the assumptions of isometry covariance and continuity, there is a similar classification theorem, due to Alesker. Also for the local extensions of the intrinsic volumes, the support, curvature and area measures, there are ana…
Combinatorial mixed valuations associated to translation-invariant valuations on polytopes are introduced. In contrast to the construction of mixed valuations via polarization, combinatorial mixed valuations reflect and often inherit properties of inhomogeneous valuations. In particular, it is shown that under mild assumptions combinatorial mixed valuations are monotone and hence nonnegative. For combinatorially positive valuations, this has strong computational implications. Applied to the discrete volume, the results generalize and strengthen work of Bihan (2015) on discrete mixed volumes. F…
All non-negative, continuous, $\operatorname{SL}(n)$ and translation invariant valuations on the space of super-coercive, convex functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ are classified. Furthermore, using the invariance of the function space under the Legendre transform, a classification of non-negative, continuous, $\operatorname{SL}(n)$ and dually translation invariant valuations is obtained. In both cases, different functional analogs of the Euler characteristic, volume and polar volume are characterized.
General results on convex bodies are reviewed and used to derive an exact closed-form parametric formula for the Minkowski sum boundary of $m$ arbitrary ellipsoids in $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. Expressions for the principal curvatures of these Minkowski sums are also derived. These results are then used to obtain upper and lower volume bounds for the Minkowski sum of ellipsoids in terms of their defining matrices; the lower bounds are sharper than the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. A reverse isometric inequality for convex bodies is also given.
The Minkowski problem in Gaussian probability space is studied in this paper. In addition to providing an existence result on a Gaussian-volume-normalized version of this problem, the main goal of the current work is to provide uniqueness and existence results on the Gaussian Minkowski problem (with no normalization required).
It was shown recently that the Minkowski content of a bounded set $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with volume zero can be characterized in terms of the asymptotic behaviour of the boundary surface area of its parallel sets $A_r$ as the parallel radius $r$ tends to $0$. Here we discuss localizations of such results. The asymptotic behaviour of the local parallel volume of $A$ relative to a suitable second set $Ω$ can be understood in terms of the suitably defined local surface area relative to $Ω$. Also a measure version of this relation is shown: Viewing the Minkowski content as a locally determined mea…
The difference body operator enjoys different characterization results relying on its basic properties such as continuity, SL(n)-covariance, Minkowski valuation or symmetric image. The Rogers-Shephard and the Brunn-Minkowski inequalities provide upper and lower bounds for the volume of the difference body in terms of the volume of the body itself. In this paper we aim to understand the role of the Rogers-Shephard inequality in characterization results of the difference body and, at the same time, to study the interplay among the different properties. Among others, we prove that the difference …
The theory of coconvex bodies was formalized by A.~Khovanski{\uı} and V.~Timorin in \cite{KT}. It has fascinating relations with the classical theory of convex bodies, as well as applications to Lorentzian geometry. In a recent preprint \cite{schnei2}, R.~Schneider proved a result that implies a reversed Brunn--Minkowski inequality for coconvex bodies, with description of equality case. In this note we show that this latter result is an immediate consequence of a more general result, namely that the volume of coconvex bodies is strictly convex. This result itself follows from a classical eleme…
In this paper, we endow the space of continuous translation invariant valuation on convex sets generated by mixed volumes coupled with a suitable Radon measure on tuples of convex bodies with two appropriate norms. This enables us to construct a continuous extension of the convolution operator on smooth valuations to non-smooth valuations, which are in the completion of the spaces of valuations with respect to these norms. The novelty of our approach lies in the fact that our proof does not rely on the general theory of wave fronts, but on geometric inequalities deduced from optimal transport …
In the course of classifying generic sparse polynomial systems which are solvable in radicals, Esterov recently showed that the volume of the Minkowski sum $P_1+\dots+P_d$ of $d$-dimensional lattice polytopes is bounded from above by a function of order $O(m^{2^d})$, where $m$ is the mixed volume of the tuple $(P_1,\dots,P_d)$. This is a consequence of the well-known Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality. Esterov also posed the problem of determining a sharper bound. We show how additional relations between mixed volumes can be employed to improve the bound to $O(m^d)$, which is asymptotically sharp.…
We define a random zonotope in Euclidean space, by adding finitely many random segments, which are independently and identically distributed. For this random polytope, we determine, under a mild assumption on the distribution, the expectations of the intrinsic volumes, more generally, the expectations of suitable valuations. We also prove a central limit theorem for a valuation evaluated at these random zonotopes.
The Minkowski tensors are the natural tensor-valued generalizations of the intrinsic volumes of convex bodies. We prove two complete sets of integral geometric formulae, so called kinematic and Crofton formulae, for these Minkowski tensors. These formulae express the integral mean of the Minkowski tensors of the intersection of a given convex body with a second geometric object (another convex body in the kinematic case and an affine subspace in the Crofton case) which is uniformly moved by a proper rigid motion, in terms of linear combinations of the Minkowski tensors of the given geometric o…
This paper develops basic setting for the dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. An Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two or more star bodies is proposed and related dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is established. Based on a linear Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two star bodies, we derive a formula for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume. Moreover, a dual Orlicz-Minkowski inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume, a dual Orlicz isoperimetric inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual surface area and a dual Orlicz-Urysohn inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-harmonic mean radius are…
The general volume of a star body, a notion that includes the usual volume, the $q$th dual volumes, and many previous types of dual mixed volumes, is introduced. A corresponding new general dual Orlicz curvature measure is defined that specializes to the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures introduced recently by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. General variational formulas are established for the general volume of two types of Orlicz linear combinations. One of these is applied to the Minkowski problem for the new general dual Orlicz curvature measure, giving in particular a solution to the Minkowski prob…
This paper gives a systematic study to the general dual-polar Orlicz-Minkowski problem (e.g., Problem \ref{general-dual-polar}). This problem involves the general dual volume $\widetilde{V}_G(\cdot)$ recently proposed in \cite{GHWXY, GHXY} in order to study the general dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem. As $\widetilde{V}_G(\cdot)$ extends the volume and the $q$th dual volume, the general dual-polar Orlicz-Minkowski problem is "polar" to the recently initiated general dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem in \cite{GHWXY, GHXY} and "dual" to the newly proposed polar Orlicz-Minkowski problem in \cite{LuoYeZh…
