We give the complete solution to the local diffeomorphism classification problem of generic singularities which appear in tangent surfaces, in as wider situations as possible. We interpret tangent geodesics as tangent lines whenever a (semi-)Riemannian metric, or, more generally, an affine connection is given in an ambient space of arbitrary dimension. Then, given an immersed curve, we define the tangent surface as the ruled surface by tangent geodesics to the curve. We apply the characterization of frontal singularities found by Kokubu, Rossman, Saji, Umehara, Yamada, and Fujimori, Saji, Umehara, Yamada, and found by the first author related to the procedure of openings of singularities.
We construct and classify, in the case of two complex dimensions, the possible tangent cones at points of limit spaces of non-collapsed sequences of Kähler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
We study tangential families, i.e. systems of rays emanating tangentially from given curves. We classify, up to Left-Right equivalence, stable singularities of tangential family germs (under deformations among tangential families) and we study their envelopes. We discuss applications of our results to the case of tangent geodesics of a curve.
Shoen and Uhlenbeck showed that ``tangent maps'' can be defined at singular points of energy minimizing maps. Unfortunately these are not unique, even for generic boundary conditions. Examples are discussed which have isolated singularities with a continuum of distinct tangent maps.
Then, given an immersed curve, or, more generally a directed curve or a frontal curve which has well-defined tangent directions along the curve, we define the tangent surface as the ruled surface by tangent geodesics to the curve. We apply the c…
It is given the diffeomorphism classification on generic singularities of tangent varieties to curves with arbitrary codimension in a projective space. The generic classifications are performed in terms of certain geometric structures and differential systems on flag manifolds, via several techniques in differentiable algebra. It is provided also the generic diffeomorphism classification of singularities on tangent varieties to contact-integral curves in the standard contact projective space. Moreover we give basic results on the classification of singularities of tangent varieties to generic …
It is known that the class of developable surfaces which have zero Gaussian curvature in three dimensional Euclidean space is preserved by the parallel transformations. A tangent developable surface is defined as a ruled developable surface by tangent lines to a space curve and it has singularities at least along the space curve, called the directrix or the the edge of regression. Also the class of tangent developable surfaces are invariant under the parallel deformations. In this paper the notions of tangent developable surfaces and their parallels are naturally generalized for frontal curves…
We give a simple direct proof of uniqueness of tangent cones for singular projectively Hermitian Yang-Mills connections on reflexive sheaves at isolated singularities modelled on $μ$-polystable holomorphic bundles over $\mathbf{P}^{n-1}$.
A directed curve is a possibly singular curve with well-defined tangent lines along the curve. Then the tangent surface to a directed curve is naturally defined as the ruled surface by tangent geodesics to the curve, whenever any affine connection is endowed with the ambient space. In this paper the local diffeomorphism classification is completed for generic directed curves. Then it turns out that the swallowtails and open swallowtails appear generically for the classification on singularities of tangent surfaces.
Let $(X, L)$ be a polarized Calabi Yau variety (or canonical polarized variety) with crepant singularity. Suppose $ω_{KE} \in c_1(L)$ (or $ω_{KE} \in c_1(K_X)$) is the unique Ricci flat current (or Kahler Einstein current with negative scalar curvature) with local bounded potential constructed in [18], we show that the local tangent at any point $p \in X$ of metric $ω_{KE}$ is unique
This is a survey article on recognition problem of frontal singularities. We specify geometrically several frontal singularities and then we solve the recognition problem of such singularities, giving explicit normal forms. We combine the recognition results by K. Saji and several arguments on openings, which was performed for the classification of singularities of tangent surfaces (tangent developables) by the author. As an application of our solutions of recognition problem of frontal singularities, we announce the classification of singularities appearing in tangent surfaces of generic null…
This is the first of a series of papers where we relate tangent cones of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections at an isolated singularity to the complex algebraic geometry of the underlying reflexive sheaf, when the sheaf is locally modelled on the pull-back of a holomorphic vector bundle from the projective space. In this paper we shall impose an extra assumption that the graded sheaf determined by the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtrations of the vector bundle is reflexive. In general we conjecture that the tangent cone is uniquely determined by the double dual of the associated graded object of …
We proved a uniqueness theorem of tangent connections for a Yang-Mills connection with an isolated singularity with a quadratic growth of the curvature at the singularity. We also obtained controls over the rate of the asymptotic convergence of the connection to the tangent connection under assumptions that the connection is stationary or the tangent connection is integrable. There are parallel results for the cones at infinity of a Yang-Mills connection on an asymptotically flat manifold. We also gave an application of our methods to the Yang-Mills flow and proved that the Yang-Mills flow exi…
The aim of this paper is to give some characterizations for N-Legendre and N-slant curves in the unit tangent bundles of surfaces endowed with natural diagonal lifted structures.
In this paper, we define some new associated curves as integral curves of a vector field generated by Frenet vectors of tangent indicatrix of a curve in Euclidean 3-space. We give some relationships between curvatures of these curves. By using these associated curves, we give some methods to construct helices and slant helices from some special spherical curves such as circles on unit sphere, spherical helices, and spherical slant helices. Finally, we give some related examples.
In this paper, Legendre curves on unit tangent bundle are given using rotation minimizing (RM) vector fields. Ruled surfaces corresponding to these curves are represented. Singularities of these ruled surfaces are also analyzed and classifed.

We study the notion of algebraic tangent cones at singularities of reflexive sheaves. These correspond to extensions of reflexive sheaves across a negative divisor. We show the existence of optimal extensions in a constructive manner, and we prove the uniqueness in a suitable sense. The results here are an algebro-geometric counterpart of our previous study on singularities of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections.
A simple closed curve $γ$ in the real projective plane $P^2$ is called anti-convex if for each point $p$ on the curve, there exists a line which is transversal to the curve and meets the curve only at $p$. We shall prove the relation $i(γ)-2δ(γ)=3$ for anti-convex curves, where $i(γ)$ is the number of independent (true) inflection points and $δ(γ)$ the number of independent double tangents. This formula is a refinement of the classical Möbius theorem. We shall also show that there are three inflection points on a given anti-convex curve such that the tangent lines at these three inflection poi…
We present a survey on generic singularities of geodesic flows in smooth signature changing metrics (often called pseudo-Riemannian) in dimension 2. Generically, a pseudo-Riemannian metric on a 2-manifold $S$ changes its signature (degenerates) along a curve $S_0$, which locally separates $S$ into a Riemannian ($R$) and a Lorentzian ($L$) domain. The geodesic flow does not have singularities over $R$ and $L$, and for any point $q \in R \cup L$ and every tangential direction $p$ there exists a unique geodesic passing through the point $q$ with the direction $p$. On the contrary, geodesics canno…
In a previous work, the authors introduced the notion of `coherent tangent bundle', which is useful for giving a treatment of singularities of smooth maps without ambient spaces. Two different types of Gauss-Bonnet formulas on coherent tangent bundles on 22-dimensional manifolds were proven, and several applications to surface theory were given. Let $M^n$ ($n\ge 2$) be an oriented compact $n$-manifold without boundary and $TM^n$ its tangent bundle. Let $\mathcal E$ be a vector bundle of rank $n$ over $M^n$, and $φ:TM^n\to \mathcal E$ an oriented vector bundle homomorphism. In this paper, we sh…
We give a global description of envelopes of geodesic tangents of regular curves in (not necessarily convex) Riemannian surfaces. We prove that such an envelope is the union of the curve itself, its inflectional geodesics and its tangential caustics (formed by the conjugate points to those of the initial curve along the tangent geodesics). Stable singularities of tangential caustics and geodesic envelopes are discussed. We also prove the (global) stability of tangential caustics of close curves in convex closed surfaces under small deformations of the initial curve and of the ambient metric.
This paper introduces pedal curves of spacelike frontals in the hyperbolic 2-space. We mainly investigate the singularities of these hyperbolic pedal curves of spacelike frontals for non-singular and singular dual curve germs. We then show that for non-singular dual curve germs, the singularities of a pedal curve are dependent on the singularities of the first hyperbolic Legendrian curvature germ and the location of the pedal point, while for singular dual curve germs, they depend upon the singularities of both hyperbolic Legendrian curvature germs and also the location of the pedal point. We …
The envelope of straight lines affine normal to a plane curve C is its affine evolute; the envelope of the affine lines tangent to C is the original curve, together with the entire affine tangent line at each inflexion of C. In this paper, we consider plane curves without inflexions. We use some techniques of singularity theory to explain how the first envelope turns into the second, as the (constant) slope between the set of lines forming the envelope and the set of affine tangents to C changes from 0 to 1. In particular, we guarantee the existence of the first slope for which singularities o…
We prove that for a mean curvature flow of a compact symplectic surface in a compact Kaehler-Einstein surface, the tangent cone at the first blow-up time consists of a finite union of more than two 2-planes in $R^4$ which are complex in a complex structure on $R^4$.
For the n-dimensional spherical pedal curve $ped_{γ,P}$ with respect to an n-dimensional spherical unit speed curve $γ$ and a given point $P \in S^n$, we define the spherical orthotomic curve of $γ$ relative to the point $P$, and classify singularities of spherical orthotomic curves.
In this paper, we study the curve shortening flow (CSF) on Riemann surfaces. We generalize Huisken's comparison function to Riemann surfaces and surfaces with conic singularities. We reprove the Gage-Hamilton-Grayson theorem on surfaces. We also prove that for embedded simple closed curves, CSF can not touch conic singularities with cone angles $\leq π$.
The notion of frontals in Euclidean space is introduced and the normal and tangent maps to frontals are studied for both geometrical and dynamical aspects of frontals. Moreover we observe that parallels of the tangent map to a frontal curve is right equivalent to the tangent map of a frontal curve under some natural conditions.
Let $M$ be a surface with a Riemannian metric and $UM$ the unit tangent bundle over $M$ with the canonical contact sub-Riemannian structure $D$ on $UM$. In this paper, the complete local classification of singularities, under the Legendre fibration $UM$ over $M$, is given for sub-Riemannian geodesics of $(UM, D)$. Legendre singularities of sub-Riemannian geodesics are classified completely also for another Legendre fibration from $UM$ to the space of Riemannian geodesics on $M$. The duality on Legendre singularities is observed related to the pendulum motion.
In this paper we prove that a certain class of embedded unknotted curves in $\mathbb{R}^3$ evolving under curve shortening flow do not form singularities Type II before collapsing to a point. Our proof uses tools of the minimal surface theory to study a suitable isoperimetric ratio.
We consider smooth 1-parameter families of plane curves tangent to a semicubic parabola, when the curvature radius of their curves at the tangency point vanishes at the cusp point. We find the $\A$-normal form of these families, their envelopes and local patterns near the cusp. We obtain a new codimension 2 singularity of envelopes (two transversal semicubic cusps), and we describe its perestroikas under generic small deformations.
We prove some epsilon regularity results for n-dimensional minimal two-valued Lipschitz graphs. The main theorems imply uniqueness of tangent cones and regularity of the singular set in a neighbourhood of any point at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a pair of transversely intersecting multiplicity one n-dimensional planes, and in a neighbourhood of any point at which at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a union of four distinct multiplicity one n-dimensional half-planes that meet along an (n-1) - dimensional axis. The key ingredient is a new Excess Improvement Lemma obtai…
We consider a geometric flow introduced by Gigli and Mantegazza which, in the case of smooth compact manifolds with smooth metrics, is tangen- tial to the Ricci flow almost-everywhere along geodesics. To study spaces with geometric singularities, we consider this flow in the context of smooth manifolds with rough metrics with sufficiently regular heat kernels. On an appropriate non- singular open region, we provide a family of metric tensors evolving in time and provide a regularity theory for this flow in terms of the regularity of the heat kernel. When the rough metric induces a metric measu…
Using interpolation with biarc curves we prove $Γ$-convergence of discretized tangent-point energies to the continuous tangent-point energies in the $C^1$-topology, as well as to the ropelength functional. As a consequence discrete almost minimizing biarc curves converge to ropelength minimizers, and to minimizers of the continuous tangent-point energies. In addition, taking point-tangent data from a given $C^{1,1}$-curve $γ$, we establish convergence of the discrete energies evaluated on biarc curves interpolating these data, to the continuous tangent-point energy of $γ$, together with an exp…
In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of asymptotically conical tangent flows in all codimensions. This is based on an early work of Chodosh-Schulze, who proved the uniqueness in the hypersurface case.
We formulate the equivalence problem, in the sense of E. Cartan, for families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. An important invariant of this equivalence problem is the variety of minimal rational tangents. We study the case when varieties of minimal rational tangents at general points form an isotrivial family. The main question in this case is for which projective variety $Z$, a family of minimal rational curves with $Z$-isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents is locally equivalent to the flat model. We show that this is the case when $Z$ satisfies certa…
In this note we introduce the notion of a smooth structure on a conical pseudomanifold $M$ in terms of $C^\infty$-rings of smooth functions on $M$. For a finitely generated smooth structure $C^\infty (M)$ we introduce the notion of the Nash tangent bundle, the Zariski tangent bundle, the tangent bundle of $M$, and the notion of characteristic classes of $M$. We prove the vanishing of a Nash vector field at a singular point for a special class of Euclidean smooth structures on $M$. We introduce the notion of a conical symplectic form on $M$ and show that it is smooth with respect to a Euclidean…
We prove that, generically, magnetic geodesics on surfaces will turn away from points with lightlike tangent planes, and we motivate our result with numerical solutions for closed magnetic geodesics.
In this paper, we prove that the tangent bundle of the moduli space $\cSU_C(r,d)$ of stable bundles of rank $r>2$ and of fixed determinant of degree $d$ (such that $(r,d)=1$), on a smooth projective curve $C$ is always stable, in the sense of Mumford-Takemoto. This verifies a well-known conjecture, and is related to a conjectural existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric on Fano varieties with Picard number one.
We show that every smooth closed curve C immersed in Euclidean 3-space satisfies the sharp inequality 2(P+I)+V >5 which relates the numbers P of pairs of parallel tangent lines, I of inflections (or points of vanishing curvature), and V of vertices (or points of vanishing torsion) of C. We also show that 2(P'+I)+V >3, where P' is the number of pairs of concordant parallel tangent lines. The proofs, which employ curve shortening flow with surgery, are based on corresponding inequalities for the numbers of double points, singularities, and inflections of closed curves in the real projective plan…
In this paper we establish stability of the Ricci de Turck flow near Ricci-flat metrics with isolated conical singularities. More precisely, we construct a Ricci de Turck flow which starts sufficiently close to a Ricci-flat metric with isolated conical singularities and converges to a singular Ricci-flat metric under an assumption of integrability, linear and tangential stability. We provide a characterization of conical singularities satisfying tangential stability and discuss examples where the integrability condition is satisfied.
We prove two theorems on the removal of singularities on the boundary of a pseudo-holomorphic curve. In one theorem, we need no apriori assumption on the area of the curve. The proof uses a doubling argument with the goal of converting curves with boundary to curves without boundary. Our method is new and geometric and it does not need Sobolev spaces and PDEs.
Locally stable minimal hypersurface could have singularities in dimension $\geq 7$ in general, locally modeled on stable and area-minimizing cones in the Euclidean spaces. In this paper, we present different aspects of how these singularities may affect the local behavior of minimal hypersurfaces. First, given a non-degenerate minimal hypersurface with strictly stable and strictly minimizing tangent cone at each singular point, under any small perturbation of the metric, we show the existence of a nearby minimal hypersurface under new metric. For a generic choice of perturbation direction, we …
Let $(\mathbb{M}_{1}^{2},g)$ be a Minkowski surface and $(T_1\mathbb{M}_1^2, g_1)$ its unit tangent bundle endowed with the pseudo-Riemannian induced Sasaki metric. We extend in this paper the study of the N-Legendre and N-slant curves which the inner product of normal vector and Reeb vector is zero and nonzero constant respectively in $\left( T_1 \mathbb{M}_1^2, g_1 \right)$, given in \cite{hmy}, to the Minkowski context and several important characterizations of these curves are given.\newline
