The aim of this paper is to use a selection process and a careful study of the interaction of bubbling solutions to show a classification result for the blow-up values of the elliptic sinh-Gordon equation $$Δu+h_1e^u-h_2e^{-u}=0 \quad \mathrm{in}~B_1\subset\mathbb{R}^2.$$ In particular we get that the blow-up values are multiple of $8π.$ It generalizes the result of Jost, Wang, Ye and Zhou \cite{jwyz} where the extra assumption $h_1 = h_2$ is crucially used.
We are concerned with the Sinh-Gordon equation in bounded domains. We construct blow up solutions with residual mass exhibiting either partial or asymmetric blow up, i.e. where both the positive and negative part of the solution blow up. This is the first result concerning residual mass for the Sinh-Gordon equation showing in particular that the concentration-compactness theory of Brezis-Merle can not be extended to this class of problems.
In the present paper we initiate the variational analysis of a super sinh-Gordon system on compact surfaces, yielding the first example of non-trivial solution of min-max type. The proof is based on a linking argument jointly with a suitably defined Nehari manifold and a careful analysis of Palais-Smale sequences. We complement this study with a multiplicity result exploiting the symmetry of the problem.
For a sinh-Poisson type problem with asymmetric exponents of interest in hydrodynamic turbulence, we establish the optimal lower bounds for the blow-up masses. We apply this result to construct solutions of mountain pass type on two-dimensional tori.
We study the elliptic sinh-Gordon and sine-Gordon equations on the real plane and we introduce new families of solutions. We use a Backlund transformation that connects the elliptic versions of sinh-Gordon and sine-Gordon equations. As an application, we construct new harmonic maps between surfaces, when the target is of constant curvature -1.
In this paper, we provide a complete blow-up picture for solution sequences to an elliptic sinh-Poisson equation with variable intensities arising in the context of the statistical mechanics description of two-dimensional turbulence, as initiated by Onsager. The vortex intensities are described in terms of a probability measure defined on the interval. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions we establish the exclusion of boundary blowup points, we show that the concentration mass does not have residual L1-terms and we determine the location of blowup points in terms of Kirchhoff's Hamiltonian. We …
We consider the sinh-Poisson equation $$(P)_λ\quad -Δu=\la\sinh u\ \hbox{in}\ Ω,\ u=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partialΩ,$$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\rr^2$ and $λ$ is a small positive parameter. If $0\inΩ$ and $Ω$ is symmetric with respect to the origin, for any integer $k$ if $\la$ is small enough, we construct a family of solutions to $(P)_\la$ which blows-up at the origin whose positive mass is $4πk(k-1)$ and negative mass is $4πk(k+1).$ It gives a complete answer to an open problem formulated by Jost-Wang-Ye-Zhou in [Calc. Var. PDE (2008) 31: 263-276].
This work investigates a nonlocal sinh-Gordon equation with a singularly perturbed parameter in a ball. Under the Robin boundary condition, the solution asymptotically forms a quite steep boundary layer in a thin annular region, and rapidly becomes a flat curve outside this region. {Focusing more particularly on the structure of the thin annular layer in this region, the pointwise asymptotic expansion involving the domain-size is evaluated more sharply, where the domain-size exactly appears in the second term of the asymptotic expansion.} It should be stressed that the standard argument of mat…
In this paper we consider the Dirichlet problem \begin{equation} \label{iniz} \begin{cases} -Δu = ρ^2 (e^{u} - e^{-u}) & \text{ in } Ω\\ u=0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation} where $ρ$ is a small parameter and $Ω$ is a $C^2$ bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$. [1] proves the existence of a $m$-point blow-up solution $u_ρ$ jointly with its asymptotic behaviour. we compute the Morse index of $u_ρ$ in terms of the Morse index of the associated Hamilton function of this problem. In addition, we give an asymptotic estimate for the first $4m$ eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
In this work a spectral theory for 2-dimensional, simply periodic, complex-valued solutions u of the sinh-Gordon equation is developed. Spectral data for such solutions are defined (following Hitchin and Bobenko) and the space of spectral data is described by an asymptotic characterization. Using methods of asymptotic estimates, the inverse problem for the spectral data is solved along a line, i.e. the solution u is reconstructed on a line from the spectral data. Finally a Jacobi variety and Abel map for the spectral curve is constructed; they are used to describe the change of the spectral da…
We analyze the blowup behaviour of solutions to the focusing nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation in spatial dimensions $d\geq 2$. We obtain upper bounds on the blowup rate, both globally in space and in light cones. The results are sharp in the conformal and sub-conformal cases. The argument relies on Lyapunov functionals derived from the dilation identity. We also prove that the critical Sobolev norm diverges near the blowup time.
We give blow-up results for the Klein-Gordon equation and other perturbations of the semilinear wave equations with superlinear power nonlinearity, in one space dimension or in higher dimension under radial symmetry outside the origin.
In this paper we consider the nonexistence of global solutions of a Klein-Gordon equation of the form \begin{eqnarray*} u_{tt}-Δu+m^2u=f(u)& (t,x)\in [0,T)\times\R^n. \end{eqnarray*} Here $m\neq 0$ and the nonlinear power $f(u)$ satisfies some assumptions which will be stated later. We give a sufficient condition on the initial datum with arbitrarily high initial energy such that the solution of the above Klein-Gordon equation blows up in a finite time.
We give three conditions on initial data for the blowing up of the corresponding solutions to some system of Klein-Gordon equations on the three dimensional Euclidean space. We first use Levine's concavity argument to show that the negativeness of energy leads to the blowing up of local solutions in finite time. For the data of positive energy, we give a sufficient condition so that the corresponding solution blows up in finite time. This condition embodies datum with arbitrarily large energy. At last we use Payne-Sattinger's potential well argument to classify the datum with energy not so lar…
This paper is concerned with strong blow-up instability (Definition 1.3) for standing wave solutions to the system of the quadratic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In the single case, namely the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with power type nonlinearity, stability and instability for standing wave solutions have been extensively studied. On the other hand, in the case of our system, there are no results concerning the stability and instability as far as we know. In this paper, we prove strong blow-up instability for the standing wave to our system. The proof is based on the techniques in O…
We study the existence of sign-changing solutions for a non-local version of the sinh-Poisson equation on a bounded one-dimensional interval $I$, under Dirichlet conditions in the exterior of $I$. This model is strictly related to the mathematical description of galvanic corrosion phenomena for simple electrochemical systems. By means of the finite-dimensional Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, we construct bubbling families of solutions developing an arbitrarily prescribed number sign-alternating peaks. With a careful analysis of the limit profile of the solutions, we also show that the numbe…
We study global dynamics for the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with the energy-critical nonlinearity in two or higher dimensions when the energy equals the threshold given by the ground state of a mass-shifted equation, and prove that the solutions are divided into scattering and blowup. In short, the Kenig-Merle scattering/blowup dichotomy extends to the threshold energy in the case of mass-shift for the critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation.
A class of equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface is considered. More precisely, we study an asymmetric sinh-Gordon problem arising as a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. We start by performing a blow-up analysis in order to derive some information on the local blow-up masses. As a consequence we get a compactness property in a supercritical range. We next introduce a variational argument based on improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities which yields existence of solutions for any choice of the underlying su…
We are concerned with wave equations associated to some Liouville-type problems on compact surfaces, focusing on sinh-Gordon equation and general Toda systems. Our aim is on one side to develop the analysis for wave equations associated to the latter problems and second, to substantially refine the analysis initiated in [11] concerning the mean field equation. In particular, by exploiting the variational analysis recently derived for Liouville-type problems we prove global existence in time for the sub-critical case and we give general blow up criteria for the super-critical and critical case.…
We establish the uniqueness of the positive solution for equations of the form $-Δu=au-b(x)f(u)$ in $Ω$, $u|\_{\partialΩ}=\infty$. The special feature is to consider nonlinearities $f$ whose variation at infinity is \emph{not regular} (e.g., $\exp(u)-1$, $\sinh(u)$, $\cosh(u)-1$, $\exp(u)\log(u+1)$, $u^β\exp(u^γ)$, $β\in {\mathbb R}$, $γ>0$ or $\exp(\exp(u))-e$) and functions $b\geq 0$ in $Ω$ vanishing on $\partialΩ$. The main innovation consists of using Karamata's theory not only in the statement/proof of the main result but also to link the non-regular variation of $f$ at infinity with the …
We consider a sinh-Poisson type equation with variable intensities and Dirichlet boundary condition on a pierced domain \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} Δu +ρ\left(V_1(x)e^{u}- V_2(x)e^{-τu}\right)=0 &\text{in } Ω_ε:=Ω\setminus \displaystyle \bigcup_{i=1}^m \overline{B(ξ_i,ε_i)}\\ u=0&\text{on }\partialΩ_ε, \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} where $ρ>0$, $V_1,V_2>0$ are smooth potentials in $Ω$, $τ>0$, $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $B(ξ_i,ε_i)$ is a ball centered at $ξ_i\in Ω$ with radius $ε_i>0$, $i=1,\dots,m$. When $ρ>0$ is small enough and $m_1\in \{1,\dots…
In this paper, we consider a weakly coupled system of a wave and damped Klein-Gordon equation with nonlinearities of derivative type. We prove a blow-up result for the Cauchy problem associated with this system for nonnegative and compactly supported data by means of an iteration argument.
In the paper we consider the nonexistence of global solutions of the Cauchy problem for coupled Klein-Gordon equations of the form \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} u_{tt}-Δu+m_1^2 u+K_1(x)u=a_1|v|^{q+1}|u|^{p-1}u v_{tt}-Δv+m_2^2 u+K_2(x)v=a_2|u|^{p+1}|v|^{q-1}v u(0,x)=u_0; u_t(0,x)=u_1(x) v(0,x)=v_0; v_t(0,x)=v_1(x) \end{array} \right. \end{eqnarray*} on $\R\times\R^n$. Firstly for some special cases of $n=2,3$, we prove the existence of ground state of the corresponding Lagrange-Euler equations of the above equations. Then we establish a blow up result with low initial energy, which …
We study dynamics near the threshold for blowup in the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx} + u - |u|^{2α} u =0$ on the line. Using mixed numerical and analytical methods we find that solutions starting from even initial data, fine-tuned to the threshold, are trapped by the static solution $S$ for intermediate times. The details of trapping are shown to depend on the power $α$, namely, we observe fast convergence to $S$ for $α>1$, slow convergence for $α=1$, and very slow (if any) convergence for $0<α<1$. Our findings are complementary with respect to the recent rigorous ana…
In this article we study the blow-up phenomena for the solutions of the semilinear Klein-Gordon equation $\Box_g ϕ-m^2 ϕ= -|ϕ|^p $ with the small mass $m \le n/2$ in de Sitter space-time with the metric $g$. We prove that for every $p>1$ the large energy solution blows up, while for the small energy solutions we give a borderline $p=p(m,n)$ for the global in time existence. The consideration is based on the representation formulas for the solution of the Cauchy problem and on some generalizations of the Kato's lemma.
