In this paper we consider the Dirichlet problem \begin{equation} \label{iniz} \begin{cases} -Δu = ρ^2 (e^{u} - e^{-u}) & \text{ in } Ω\\ u=0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation} where $ρ$ is a small parameter and $Ω$ is a $C^2$ bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$. [1] proves the existence of a $m$-point blow-up solution $u_ρ$ jointly with its asymptotic behaviour. we compute the Morse index of $u_ρ$ in terms of the Morse index of the associated Hamilton function of this problem. In addition, we give an asymptotic estimate for the first $4m$ eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
For a sinh-Poisson type problem with asymmetric exponents of interest in hydrodynamic turbulence, we establish the optimal lower bounds for the blow-up masses. We apply this result to construct solutions of mountain pass type on two-dimensional tori.
We are concerned with the Sinh-Gordon equation in bounded domains. We construct blow up solutions with residual mass exhibiting either partial or asymmetric blow up, i.e. where both the positive and negative part of the solution blow up. This is the first result concerning residual mass for the Sinh-Gordon equation showing in particular that the concentration-compactness theory of Brezis-Merle can not be extended to this class of problems.
In this paper, we provide a complete blow-up picture for solution sequences to an elliptic sinh-Poisson equation with variable intensities arising in the context of the statistical mechanics description of two-dimensional turbulence, as initiated by Onsager. The vortex intensities are described in terms of a probability measure defined on the interval. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions we establish the exclusion of boundary blowup points, we show that the concentration mass does not have residual L1-terms and we determine the location of blowup points in terms of Kirchhoff's Hamiltonian. We …
The aim of this paper is to use a selection process and a careful study of the interaction of bubbling solutions to show a classification result for the blow-up values of the elliptic sinh-Gordon equation $$Δu+h_1e^u-h_2e^{-u}=0 \quad \mathrm{in}~B_1\subset\mathbb{R}^2.$$ In particular we get that the blow-up values are multiple of $8π.$ It generalizes the result of Jost, Wang, Ye and Zhou \cite{jwyz} where the extra assumption $h_1 = h_2$ is crucially used.
We consider the sinh-Poisson equation $$(P)_λ\quad -Δu=\la\sinh u\ \hbox{in}\ Ω,\ u=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partialΩ,$$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\rr^2$ and $λ$ is a small positive parameter. If $0\inΩ$ and $Ω$ is symmetric with respect to the origin, for any integer $k$ if $\la$ is small enough, we construct a family of solutions to $(P)_\la$ which blows-up at the origin whose positive mass is $4πk(k-1)$ and negative mass is $4πk(k+1).$ It gives a complete answer to an open problem formulated by Jost-Wang-Ye-Zhou in [Calc. Var. PDE (2008) 31: 263-276].
Blow-up solutions to the two-dimensional Gel'fand problem are studied. It is known that the location of the blow-up points of these solutions is related to a Hamiltonian function involving the Green function of the domain. We show that this implies an equivalence between the Morse indices of the solutions and the associated critical points of the Hamiltonian.
For a solution of the Allen-Cahn equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$, under the natural linear growth energy bound, we show that the blowing down limit is unique. Furthermore, if the solution has finite Morse index, the blowing down limit satisfies the multiplicity one property.
We study the existence of sign-changing solutions for a non-local version of the sinh-Poisson equation on a bounded one-dimensional interval $I$, under Dirichlet conditions in the exterior of $I$. This model is strictly related to the mathematical description of galvanic corrosion phenomena for simple electrochemical systems. By means of the finite-dimensional Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, we construct bubbling families of solutions developing an arbitrarily prescribed number sign-alternating peaks. With a careful analysis of the limit profile of the solutions, we also show that the numbe…
A class of equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface is considered. More precisely, we study an asymmetric sinh-Gordon problem arising as a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. We start by performing a blow-up analysis in order to derive some information on the local blow-up masses. As a consequence we get a compactness property in a supercritical range. We next introduce a variational argument based on improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities which yields existence of solutions for any choice of the underlying su…
In this paper, we study the blow-up analysis of an affine Toda system corresponding to minimal surfaces into ${\mathbb S}^4$ [19]. This system is an integrable system which is a natural generalization of sinh-Gordon equation [18]. By exploring a refined blow-up analysis in the bubble domain, we prove that the blow-up values are multiple of $8π$, which generalizes the previous results proved in \cite{Spruck, OS, Jost-Wang-Ye-Zhou, Jevnikar-Wei-Yang} for the sinh-Gordon equation. Let $(u_k^1,u_k^2, u^3_k)$ be a sequence of solutions of \begin{align*} -Δu^1&=e^{u^1}-e^{u^3},\\ -Δu^2&=e^{u^2}-e^{u…
We are concerned with wave equations associated to some Liouville-type problems on compact surfaces, focusing on sinh-Gordon equation and general Toda systems. Our aim is on one side to develop the analysis for wave equations associated to the latter problems and second, to substantially refine the analysis initiated in [11] concerning the mean field equation. In particular, by exploiting the variational analysis recently derived for Liouville-type problems we prove global existence in time for the sub-critical case and we give general blow up criteria for the super-critical and critical case.…
We establish the uniqueness of the positive solution for equations of the form $-Δu=au-b(x)f(u)$ in $Ω$, $u|\_{\partialΩ}=\infty$. The special feature is to consider nonlinearities $f$ whose variation at infinity is \emph{not regular} (e.g., $\exp(u)-1$, $\sinh(u)$, $\cosh(u)-1$, $\exp(u)\log(u+1)$, $u^β\exp(u^γ)$, $β\in {\mathbb R}$, $γ>0$ or $\exp(\exp(u))-e$) and functions $b\geq 0$ in $Ω$ vanishing on $\partialΩ$. The main innovation consists of using Karamata's theory not only in the statement/proof of the main result but also to link the non-regular variation of $f$ at infinity with the …
We consider a sinh-Poisson type equation with variable intensities and Dirichlet boundary condition on a pierced domain \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} Δu +ρ\left(V_1(x)e^{u}- V_2(x)e^{-τu}\right)=0 &\text{in } Ω_ε:=Ω\setminus \displaystyle \bigcup_{i=1}^m \overline{B(ξ_i,ε_i)}\\ u=0&\text{on }\partialΩ_ε, \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} where $ρ>0$, $V_1,V_2>0$ are smooth potentials in $Ω$, $τ>0$, $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $B(ξ_i,ε_i)$ is a ball centered at $ξ_i\in Ω$ with radius $ε_i>0$, $i=1,\dots,m$. When $ρ>0$ is small enough and $m_1\in \{1,\dots…
We consider the nonlocal Hénon-Gelfand-Liouville problem $$ (-Δ)^s u = |x|^a e^u\quad\mathrm{in}\quad \mathbb R^n, $$ for every $s\in(0,1)$, $a>0$ and $n>2s$. We prove a monotonicity formula for solutions of the above equation using rescaling arguments. We apply this formula together with blow-down analysis arguments and technical integral estimates to establish non-existence of finite Morse index solutions when $$\dfrac{Γ(\frac n2)Γ(s)}{Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})}\left(s+\frac a2\right)> \dfrac{Γ^2(\frac{n+2s}{4})}{Γ^2(\frac{n-2s}{4})}.$$
We develop a monotonicity formula for solutions of the fractional Toda system $$ (-Δ)^s f_α= e^{-(f_{α+1}-f_α)} - e^{-(f_α-f_{α-1})} \quad \text{in} \ \ \mathbb R^n,$$ when $0<s<1$, $α=1,\cdots,Q$, $f_0=-\infty$, $f_{Q+1}=\infty$ and $Q \ge2$ is the number of equations in this system. We then apply this formula, technical integral estimates, classification of stable homogeneous solutions, and blow-down analysis arguments to establish Liouville type theorems for finite Morse index (and stable) solutions of the above system when $n > 2s$ and $$ \dfrac{Γ(\frac{n}{2})Γ(1+s)}{Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})} \fr…
We classify finite Morse index solutions of the following Gelfand-Liouville equation \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{s} u= e^u \ \ \text{in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^n, \end{equation*} for $1<s<2$ and $s=2$ via a novel monotonicity formula and technical blow-down analysis. We show that the above equation does not admit any finite Morse index solution with $(-Δ)^{s/2} u$ vanishes at infinity provided $n>2s$ and \begin{equation*} \label{1.condition} \frac{ Γ(\frac{n+2s}{4})^2 }{ Γ(\frac{n-2s}{4})^2} < \frac{Γ(\frac{n}{2}) Γ(1+s)}{ Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})}, \end{equation*} where $Γ$ is the classical Gamma function. The …
We consider the Hénon equation \begin{equation}\label{alphab} -Δu = |x|^α|u|^{p-1}u \ \ \textrm{in} \ \ B^N, \quad u = 0 \ \ \textrm{on}\ \ \partial B^N, \tag{$P_α$} \end{equation} where $B^N\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is the open unit ball centered at the origin, $N\geq 3$, $p>1$ and $α> 0$ is a parameter. We show that, after a suitable rescaling, the two-dimensional Lane-Emden equation \[ -Δw = |w|^{p-1}w\quad \text{in}\ B^2,\quad w=0\quad \text{on}\ \partial B^2, \] where $B^2 \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is the open unit ball, is the limit problem of \eqref{alphab}, as $α\to \infty$, in the framework o…
In this paper we compute the Leray Schauder degree for a fourth order elliptic boundary value problem with exponential nonlinearity and Navier boundary condition. This will be made by proving a Poincare'-Hopf type theorem. Moreover by using this result, together with some quantitative results about the formal set of barycenters, we are able to establish a direct and geometrically clear degree counting formula for our problem. We remark that this formula has been proven with complete different methods by Lin Wei and Wang by using blow-up type estimates.
We prove that finite Morse index solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation in $\R^2$ have {\bf finitely many ends} and {\bf linear energy growth}. The main tool is a {\bf curvature decay estimate} on level sets of these finite Morse index solutions, which in turn is reduced to a problem on the uniform second order regularity of clustering interfaces for the singularly perturbed Allen-Cahn equation in $\R^n$. Using an indirect blow-up technique, in the spirit of the classical Colding-Minicozzi theory in minimal surfaces, we show that the {\bf obstruction} to the uniform second order regularity of cl…
We compute the Morse index of nodal radial solutions to the Hénon problem \[\left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |x|^α|u|^{p-1} u \qquad & \text{ in } B, \newline u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial B, \end{array} \right. \] where $B$ stands for the unit ball in ${\mathbb R}^N$ in dimension $N\ge 3$, $α>0$ and $p$ is near at the threshold exponent for existence of solutions $p_α=\frac{N+2+2α}{N-2}$, obtaining that \begin{align*} m(u_p) & = m \sum\limits_{j=0}^{1+\left[α/{2}\right]} N_j \quad & \mbox{ if $α$ is not an even integer, or} \newline m(u_p)& = m\sum\limits_{j=0}^{ α/2} N_j + (m-1) N_{1+α/ 2} & \mb…
We consider the problem of prescribing the Gaussian and the geodesic curvatures of a compact surface with boundary by a conformal deformation of the metric. We derive some existence results using a variational approach, either by minimization of the Euler-Lagrange energy or via min-max methods. One of the main tools in our approach is a blow-up analysis of solutions, which in the present setting can have diverging volume. To our knowledge, this is the first time in which such an aspect is treated. Key ingredients in our arguments are: a blow-up analysis around a sequence of points different fr…
For an asymmetric sinh-Poisson problem arising as a mean field equation of equilibrium turbulence vortices with variable intensities of interest in hydrodynamic turbulence, we address the existence of bubbling solutions on compact Riemann surfaces. By using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, we find sufficient conditions under which there exist bubbling solutions blowing up at $m$ different points of $S$: positively at $m_1$ points and negatively at $m-m_1$ points with $m\ge 1$ and $m_1\in\{0,1,...,m\}$. Several examples in different situations illustrate our results in the sphere $\mathbb S^2$ and…
We use a min-max procedure on the Allen-Cahn energy functional to construct geodesics on closed, 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, as motivated by the work of Guaraco. Borrowing classical blowup and curvature estimates from geometric analysis, as well as novel Allen-Cahn curvature estimates due to Wang-Wei, we manage to study the fine structure of potential singular points at the diffuse level, and show that the problem reduces to that of understanding "entire" singularity models constructed by del Pino-Kowalczyk-Pacard with Morse index 1. The argument is completed by a Morse index estimate …
In this paper we study a Nirenberg type problem on standard half spheres $(\mathbb{S}^n_+,g_0)$ consisting of finding conformal metrics of prescribed scalar curvature and zero boundary mean curvature on the boundary $\partial \mathbb{S}^n_+$. This problem amounts to solve the following boundary value problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent: \begin{equation*} (\mathcal{P}) \quad \begin{cases} -\D_{g_0} u \, + \, \frac{n(n-2)}{4} u \, = K \, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\, u > 0 & \mbox{in } \mathbb{S}^n_+, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}\, =\, 0 & \mbox{on } \partial \mathbb{S}^n_+. \end{cases} \e…
We consider minimal surfaces $M$ which are complete, embedded and have finite total curvature in $\R^3$, and bounded, entire solutions with finite Morse index of the Allen-Cahn equation $Δu + f(u) = 0 \hbox{in} \R^3 $. Here $f=-W'$ with $W$ bistable and balanced, for instance $W(u) =\frac 14 (1-u^2)^2$. We assume that $M$ has $m\ge 2$ ends, and additionally that $M$ is non-degenerate, in the sense that its bounded Jacobi fields are all originated from rigid motions (this is known for instance for a Catenoid and for the Costa-Hoffman-Meeks surface of any genus). We prove that for any small $α>0…
