We study the large-data Cauchy problem for two dimensional Oldroyd model of incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We prove the global-in-time existence of the Leray-Hopf type weak solutions in the physical energy space. Our method relies on a new $\textit{a priori}$ estimate on the space-time norm in $L^{\f32}_{loc}$ of the Cauchy-Green strain tensor $τ=\F\F^\top$, or equivalently the $L^3_{loc}$ norm of the Jacobian of the flow map $\F$. It allows us to rule out possible concentrations of the energy due to deformations associated with the flow maps. Following the general compactness arguments due to DiPerna and Lions (\cite{DL}, \cite{FNP}, \cite{PL}), and using the so-called \textit{effective viscous flux}, $\mathcal{G}$, which was introduced in our previous work \cite{HL}, we are able to control the possible oscillations of deformation gradients as well.
The initial value problem for Hookean incompressible viscoelastictic motion in three space dimensions has global strong solutions with small displacements.
In this paper we consider the local and global well-posedness to the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We first study some linear models associated to the incompressible viscoelastic system. Then we approximate the system by a sequence of ordinary differential equations, by means of the Friedrichs method. Some uniform estimates for those solutions will be obtained. Using compactness arguments, we will get the local existence up to extracting a subsequence by means of Ascoli's lemma. With the help of small data conditions and hybird Besov spaces, we finally derive the global…
We are concerned with the well-posedness of the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluid system. By Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point argument, when $\|{1}/{ρ_0}-1\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{{N}/{p}}}$ is small, local well-posedness is showed to hold in Besov space. Furthermore, provided the initial data $(1/ρ_0 -1,\upsilon_0,U_0-I)$ is small under certain norm, we also get the existence of the global solution.
The global existence of solutions to incompressible viscoelastic flows has been a longstanding open problem, even for the global weak solution. Under some special structure ("div-curl" condition) the global small smooth solution was obtained in \cite{llzhou, cz}. However, the result with large initial data remains unknown up to now, and it is studied in this paper. We shall put forward a new structure: the cone-condition and then derive the global smooth solution to 3D incompressible viscoelastic system with a class of large initial data. The key is to gain an angle quantity in the estimate of…
Global existence for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) modeling an isotropic incompressible viscoelastic material is proved. The structure of the PDE is derived through constitutive assumptions on the material. Restriction on the size of the initial displacement and velocity for the model is specified independent of the size of the viscosity of the material. The proof of global existence combines use of vector fields, local energy decay estimates, generalized Sobolev inequalities, and hyperbolic energy estimates.
We investigate global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type with the initial data close to a stable equilibrium. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of the global solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations, where the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. Like the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes, one may construct the unique global solution for a class of large highly osci…
We investigate local and global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of a solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations. More precisely, the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. We point out a smoothing effect on the velocity and a $L^1-$decay on the difference between the deformation tensor and the identity matrix. Our result implies that the…
We study the blowup criterion of smooth solution to the Oldroyd models. Let $(u(t,x), F(t,x)$ be a smooth solution in $[0,T)$, it is shown that the solution $(u(t,x), F(t,x)$ does not appear breakdown until $t=T$ provided $\nabla u(t,x)\in L^1([0,T]; L^\infty(\mr^n))$, $n=2,3$.
We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in the whole space and the periodic problem in the n-dimensional torus for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd-B type in the case of near equilibrium initial data. The results hold in both two and three dimensional spaces. The results and methods presented in this paper are also valid for a wide range of elastic complex fluids, such as magnetohydrodynamics, liquid crystals and mixture problems.
In \cite{Lei}, the author derived an exact rotation-strain model in two dimensions for the motion of incompressible viscoelastic materials via the polar decomposition of the deformation tensor. Based on the rotation-strain model, the author constructed a family of large global classical solutions for the 2D incompressible viscoelasticity. To get such a global well-posedness result, the equation for the rotation angle was essential to explore the underlying weak dissipative structure of the whole viscoelastic system even though the momentum equation for the velocity field and the transport equa…
In this paper we analyze a 2D free-boundary viscoelastic fluid model of Oldroyd-B type at infinite Weissenberg number. Our main goal is to show the existence of the so-called splash singularities, namely points where the boundary remains smooth but self-intersects. The combination of existence and stability results allows us to construct a special class of initial data, which evolve in time into self-intersecting configurations. To this purpose we apply the classical conformal mapping method and later we move to the Lagrangian framework, as a consequence we deduce the existence of splash singu…
This paper studies the inviscid limit of the two-dimensional incompressible viscoelasticity, which is a system coupling a Navier-Stokes equation with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. The existence of global smooth solutions near the equilibrium with a fixed positive viscosity was known since the work of F. H. Lin, C. Liu, and P. Zhang in "On hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids". The inviscid case was solved recently by the second author Z. Lei. in "Global well-posedness of incompressible elastodynamics in two dimensions". While the latter was solely based on the techniques fro…
In Part II of the paper, we prove linear instability of a certain class of radially symmetric flows of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two used in Part I
In Part I of the paper, we prove non-uniqueness of the solution to the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two with vorticity in some Lebesgue space. The radially symmetric external force is locally integrable with values in the same Lebesgue space.
The global existence of weak solutions of the incompressible viscoelastic flows in two spatial dimensions has been a long standing open problem, and it is studied in this paper. We show the global existence if the initial deformation gradient is close to the identity matrix in $L^2\cap L^\infty$, and the initial velocity is small in $L^2$ and bounded in $L^p$, for some $p>2$. While the assumption on the initial deformation gradient is automatically satisfied for the classical Oldroyd-B model, the additional assumption on the initial velocity being bounded in $L^p$ for some $p>2$ may due to tec…
We consider solutions to the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations on the 3-dimensional torus which are continuous or Hölder continuous for any exponent $θ<\frac{1}{16}$. Using the techniques introduced in \cite{DS12} and \cite{DS12H}, we prove the existence of infinitely many (Hölder) continuous initial vector fields starting from which there exist infinitely many (Hölder) continuous solutions with preassigned total kinetic energy.
We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploite…
In this paper, we are concerned with the well-posedness and large time behavior of Cauchy problem for 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations. First, using Banach fixed point theorem, we establish the local well-posedness of solutions. Second, assuming $\|(u_0,\nablaϕ_0)\|_{\dot{H}^\frac12}$ is sufficiently small, we obtain the global well-posedness of solutions. Moreover, the optimal decay rates of the higher-order spatial derivatives of the solution are also obtained.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem of the nonhomogeneous incompressible non-resistive MHD on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with vacuum as far field density and prove that the 2D Cauchy problem has a unique local strong solution provided that the initial density and magnetic field decay not too slow at infinity. Furthermore, if the initial data satisfy some additional regularity and compatibility conditions, the strong solution becomes a classical one.
We utilize undetermined coefficient method and an iterative method to construct the series solutions of the 3D Cauchy problem for a class of incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler Equations. Then we can turn the Navier-Stokes Equations (Euler Equations) into the Cauchy problem for finitely (infinitely) many ordinary differential equations. We get the finite series solution of the Navier-Stokes Equations. By using some combinatorial identities techniques, we prove that the sum of the solutions to these ordinary differential equations is an infinite series solution of the Euler Equations in some…
This paper is concerned with a mathematical model which describes 2-D flows of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid of Oldroyd type in a bounded domain. We prove the existence and uniqueness theorem for global (in time) weak solutions and derive the energy equation.
The Cauchy problem for a nonlinear elastic wave equations with viscoelastic damping terms is considered on the 3 dimensional whole space. Decay and smoothing properties of the solutions are investigated when the initial data are sufficiently small; and asymptotic profiles as $t \to \infty$ are also derived.
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear wave equation with frictional and viscoelastic damping terms. Our aim is to obtain the threshold, to classify the global existence of solution for small data or the finite time blow-up pf the solution, with respect to the growth order of the nonlinearity.

In this paper, we study the problem of energy conservation for the solutions to the incompressible viscoelastic flows. First, we consider Leray-Hopf weak solutions in the bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^d\,\, (d\geq 2)$. We prove that under the Shinbrot type conditions $ u \in L^{q}_{loc}\left(0, T ; L^{p}(Ω)\right) \text { for any } \frac{1}{q}+\frac{1}{p} \leq \frac{1}{2}, \text { with } p \geq 4,\text{ and } {\bf F} \in L^{r}_{loc}\left(0, T ; L^{s}(Ω)\right) \text { for any } \frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{s} \leq \frac{1}{2}, \text { with } s \geq 4 $, the boundary conditions $u|_{\part…
In this paper, we are interested in the Cauchy problem for the viscoelastic damped wave equation with memory of type I. By applying WKB analysis and Fourier analysis, we explain the memory's influence on dissipative structures and asymptotic profiles of solutions to the model with weighted $L^1$ initial data. Furthermore, concerning standard energy and the solution itself, we establish singular limit relations between the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation with memory and the viscoelastic damped wave equation with memory.
The Cauchy problem for nonlinear elastic wave equations with viscoelastic damping terms is investigated in $L^{p}$ framework. It is proved that the small global solutions constructed in $L^{2}$-Sobolev spaces in our preceding paper [12] satisfies consistency property corresponding to the additional regularity of the initial data. As a result, sharp estimates in $t$ and approximation formulas by the diffusion waves are established.
An exact two-dimensional rotation-strain model describing the motion of Hookean incompressible viscoelastic materials is constructed by the polar decomposition of the deformation tensor. The global existence of classical solutions is proved under the smallness assumptions only on the size of initial strain tensor. The proof of global existence utilizes the weak dissipative mechanism of motion, which is revealed by passing the partial dissipation to the whole system.
We study a nonlinear, unsteady, moving boundary, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem arising in modeling blood flow through elastic and viscoelastic arteries. The fluid flow, which is driven by the time-dependent pressure data, is governed by 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the elastodynamics of the cylindrical wall is modeled by the 1D cylindrical Koiter shell model. Two cases are considered: the linearly viscoelastic and the linearly elastic Koiter shell. The fluid and structure are fully coupled (2-way coupling) via the kinematic and dynamic lateral boundary condition…
Euler-Leray data functions of first and second order are defined by first and second order derivatives of the nonlinear spatial part of the incompressible Euler equation operator in Leray projection form applied to Cauchy data. The Lipschitz continuity of these functions for a certain class of strongly regular Cauchy data is sufficient for the existence of global regular upper bounds of incompressible Navier Stokes equation solutions. Global regular upper bounds of global solution branches of the incompressible Euler equation can be obtained for a class of strongly regular Cauchy data, if the …
This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of the nonhomogeneous incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations on the whole two-dimensional (2D) space with vacuum as far field density. In particular, the initial density can have compact support. We prove that the 2D Cauchy problem of the nonhomogeneous incompressible MHD equations admits a unique local strong solution provided the initial density and the initial magnetic decay not too slow at infinity.
The global solutions in critical spaces to the multi-dimensional compressible viscoelastic flows are considered. The global existence of the Cauchy problem with initial data close to an equilibrium state is established in Besov spaces. Using uniform estimates for a hyperbolic-parabolic linear system with convection terms, we prove the global existence in the Besov space which is invariant with respect to the {scaling} of the associated equations. Several important estimates are achieved, including a smoothing effect on the velocity, and the $L^1-$decay of the density and deformation gradient.
We prove the existence of a unique large-data global-in-time weak solution to a class of models of the form $\mathbf{u}_{tt} = \mathrm{div}(\mathbb{T}) + \mathbf{f}$ for viscoelastic bodies exhibiting strain-limiting behaviour, where the constitutive equation, relating the linearised strain tensor $\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u})$ to the Cauchy stress tensor $\mathbb{T}$, is assumed to be of the form $\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}_t) +α\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u})= F(\mathbb{T})$, where we define $F(\mathbb{T}) = (1 + |\mathbb{T}|^a)^{-\frac{1}{a}}\mathbb{T}$, for constant parameters $α\in (0, \infty)$ and $a\…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear wave equation with frictional and viscoelastic damping terms. As is pointed out by [8], in this combination, the frictional damping term is dominant for the viscoelastic one for the global dynamics of the linear equation. In this note we observe that if the initial data is small, the frictional damping term is again dominant even in the nonlinear equation case. In other words, our main result is diffusion phenomena: the solution is approximated by the heat kernel with a suitable constant. Our proof is based on several estimates for the…
In this paper, we address the problem of current-vortex sheets in ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. More precisely, we prove a local-in-time existence and uniqueness result for analytic initial data using a Cauchy-Kowalevskaya theorem.
This paper studies the Cauchy problem of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic systems with or without viscosity $ν$. Under the assumption that the initial velocity field and the displacement of the initial magnetic field from a non-zero constant are sufficiently small in certain weighted Sobolev spaces, the Cauchy problem is shown to be globally well-posed for all $ν\geq 0$ and all space dimension $n \geq 2$. Such a result holds true uniformly in nonnegative viscosity parameter. The proof is based on the inherent strong null structure of the systems which was first introduced for incompressi…
We prove that for sufficiently small initial displacements in some weighted Sobolev space, the Cauchy problem of the systems of incompressible isotropic elastodynamics in two space dimensions admits a uniqueness global classical solution.

In this paper we focus on the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a rough external force. If the given rough external force is small, we prove the local-in-time existence of this system for any initial data belonging to the critical Besov space $\dot{B}_{p,p}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}$, where $3<p<\infty$. Moreover, We show the long-time behavior of the priori global solutins constructed by us. Also, we give three kinds of uniqueness results of the forced Navier-Stokes equations.
We investigate finite amplitude stability of spatially inhomogeneous steady state of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid which occupies a mechanically isolated vessel with walls kept at spatially non-uniform temperature. For a wide class of incompressible viscoelastic models including the Oldroyd-B model, the Giesekus model, the FENE-P model, the Johnson--Segalman model, and the Phan--Thien--Tanner model we prove that the steady state is stable subject to any finite perturbation.
This paper is concerned with a Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3D) nonhomogeneous incompressible heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the whole space. First of all, we establish a weak Serrin-type blowup criterion for the strong solutions. It is shown that for the Cauchy problem of the 3D nonhomogeneous heat conducting MHD equations, the strong solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the weak Serrin's condition. In particular, this criterion is independent of the absolute temperature and magnetic field. Then as an immediate application, we prove the globa…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a compressible Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions. Under some smallness assumptions on the initial data, we obtain the global wellposedness of strong solution with uniform regularity. Moreover, we provide a rigorous justification for the link between the compressible model and the corresponding incompressible model via incompressible limits.
An initial-boundary value problem for a viscoelastic wave equation subject to a strong time-localized delay in a Kelvin & Voigt-type material law is considered. Transforming the equation to an abstract Cauchy problem on the extended phase space, a global well-posedness theory is established using the operator semigroup theory both in Sobolev-valued $C^{0}$- and BV-spaces. Under appropriate assumptions on the coefficients, a global exponential decay rate is obtained and the stability region in the parameter space is further explored using the Lyapunov's indirect method. The singular limit $τ\to…
In this paper, we study the Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which is a third order in time equation that arises in viscous thermally relaxing fluids and also in viscoelastic materials (then under the name of \emph{standard linear viscoelastic} model). First, we use some Lyapunov functionals in the Fourier space to show that, under certain assumptions on some parameters in the equation, an energy norm related with the solution decays with a rate $(1+t)^{-N/4}$. But this does not give the decay rate of the solution itself. Hence, in the second part of the paper, we show an ex…
We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in $\R^3$ for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system. We also prove that the solution to the incompressible MHD system can be obtained as the incompressible limit of the corresponding compressible system. We apply methods in extracting weak dissipative structure which were suggested by Lei-Liu-Zhou.
