We prove the existence of a unique large-data global-in-time weak solution to a class of models of the form $\mathbf{u}_{tt} = \mathrm{div}(\mathbb{T}) + \mathbf{f}$ for viscoelastic bodies exhibiting strain-limiting behaviour, where the constitutive equation, relating the linearised strain tensor $\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u})$ to the Cauchy stress tensor $\mathbb{T}$, is assumed to be of the form $\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}_t) +α\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u})= F(\mathbb{T})$, where we define $F(\mathbb{T}) = (1 + |\mathbb{T}|^a)^{-\frac{1}{a}}\mathbb{T}$, for constant parameters $α\in (0, \infty)$ and $a\in (0, \infty)$, in any number $d$ of space dimensions, with periodic boundary conditions. The Cauchy stress $\mathbb{T}$ is show to belong to $L^1(Q)^{d\times d}$ over the space-time domain $Q$. In particular, in three space dimensions, if $a\in (0, \frac{2}{7})$, then in fact $\mathbb{T}\in L^{1+δ}(Q)^{d\times d}$ for a $δ>0$, the value of which depends only on $a$.
A general model covering a large variety of the so-called adhesive or cohesive, possibly also frictional, contact interfaces between visco-elastic bodies with inertia considered in a thermodynamical context is presented. A semi-implicit time discretisation which conserves energy, is numerically stable and convergent, and which advantageously decouples the system is devised. An extension to porous media with adhesive contact influenced by a diffusant concentration is devised, too.
An exact two-dimensional rotation-strain model describing the motion of Hookean incompressible viscoelastic materials is constructed by the polar decomposition of the deformation tensor. The global existence of classical solutions is proved under the smallness assumptions only on the size of initial strain tensor. The proof of global existence utilizes the weak dissipative mechanism of motion, which is revealed by passing the partial dissipation to the whole system.
We introduce a one-dimensional stress-rate type nonlinear viscoelastic model for solids that obey the assumptions of the strain-limiting theory. Unlike the classical viscoelasticity theory, the critical hypothesis in the present strain-limiting theory is that the linearized strain depends nonlinearly on the stress and the stress rate. We show the thermodynamic consistency of the model using the complementary free energy, or equivalently, the Gibbs free energy. This allows us to take the stress and the stress rate as primitive variables instead of kinematical quantities such as deformation or s…
In this work we prove local existence of strong solutions to the initial-value problem arising in one-dimensional strain-limiting viscoelasticity, which is based on a nonlinear constitutive relation between the linearized strain, the rate of change of the linearized strain and the stress. The model is a generalization of the nonlinear Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic solid under the assumption that the strain and the strain rate are small. We define an initial-value problem for the stress variable and then, under the assumption that the nonlinear constitutive function is strictly increasing, we conve…
In \cite{Lei}, the author derived an exact rotation-strain model in two dimensions for the motion of incompressible viscoelastic materials via the polar decomposition of the deformation tensor. Based on the rotation-strain model, the author constructed a family of large global classical solutions for the 2D incompressible viscoelasticity. To get such a global well-posedness result, the equation for the rotation angle was essential to explore the underlying weak dissipative structure of the whole viscoelastic system even though the momentum equation for the velocity field and the transport equa…
Motivated by rate-independent stress-strain hysteresis observed in filled rubber, this article considers a scalar viscoelastic model in which the constitutive law is random and varies on a lengthscale which is small relative to the overall size of the solid. Using stochastic two-scale convergence as introduced by Bourgeat, Mikelic and Wright, we obtain the homogenized limit of the evolution, and demonstrate that under certain hypotheses, the homogenized model exhibits hysteretic behaviour which persists under asymptotically slow loading. These results are illustrated by means of numerical simu…
Maxwellian-type rheological models of inelastic effects of creep type at large strains are revisited in relation to inelastic-strain gradient theories. In particular, we observe that a dependence of the stored-energy density on inelastic-strain gradients may lead to spurious hardening effects, preventing the model from accommodating large inelastic slips. The main result of this paper is an alternative inelastic model of creep type, where higher-order energy-contribution is provided by the gradients of the elastic strain and of the plastic strain rate, thus preventing the onset of spurious har…
We consider a system of evolutionary equations that is capable of describing certain viscoelastic effects in linearized yet nonlinear models of solid mechanics. The essence of the paper is that the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress, the small strain tensor and the symmetric velocity gradient, is given in an implicit form. For a large class of implicit constitutive relations we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time large-data weak solution. We then focus on the class of so-called limiting strain models, i.e., models for which the magnitude of the strain ten…
In this paper we analyze an isothermal and isotropic model for viscoelastic media combining linearized perfect plasticity (allowing for concentration of plastic strain and development of shear bands) and damage effects in a dynamic setting. The interplay between the viscoelastic rheology with inertia, elasto-plasticity, and unidirectional rate-dependent incomplete damage affecting both the elastic and viscous response, as well as the plastic yield stress, is rigorously characterized by showing existence of weak solutions to the constitutive and balance equations of the model. The analysis reli…
We apply a quasistatic nonlinear model for nonsimple viscoelastic materials at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology to derive a viscoelastic plate model of von Kármán type. We start from time-discrete solutions to a model of three-dimensional viscoelasticity where the viscosity stress tensor complies with the principle of time-continuous frame-indifference. Combining the derivation of nonlinear plate theory by Friesecke, James and Müller, and the abstract theory of gradient flows in metric spaces by Sandier and Serfaty we perform a dimension-reduction from 3D to 2D and iden…
We formulate a quasistatic nonlinear model for nonsimple viscoelastic materials at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology where the viscosity stress tensor complies with the principle of time-continuous frame-indifference. We identify weak solutions in the nonlinear framework as limits of time-incremental problems for vanishing time increment. Moreover, we show that linearization around the identity leads to the standard system for linearized viscoelasticity and that solutions of the nonlinear system converge in a suitable sense to solutions of the linear one. The same proper…
We study the large-data Cauchy problem for two dimensional Oldroyd model of incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We prove the global-in-time existence of the Leray-Hopf type weak solutions in the physical energy space. Our method relies on a new $\textit{a priori}$ estimate on the space-time norm in $L^{\f32}_{loc}$ of the Cauchy-Green strain tensor $τ=\F\F^\top$, or equivalently the $L^3_{loc}$ norm of the Jacobian of the flow map $\F$. It allows us to rule out possible concentrations of the energy due to deformations associated with the flow maps. Following the general compactness arguments d…
We extend the framework of dynamic fracture problems with a phase-field approximation to the case of a nonlinear constitutive relation between the Cauchy stress tensor $ \mathbb{T} $, linearised strain $ \boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}) $ and strain rate $ \boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}_t ) $. The relationship takes the form $ \boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}_t) + α\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}) = F(\mathbb{T}) $ where $ F $ satisfies certain $p$-growth conditions. We take particular care to study the case $p=1$ of a `strain-limiting' solid, that is, one in which the strain is bounded {\it a priori}. We prove the existence…
We consider a fluid model including viscoelastic and viscoplastic effects. The state is given by the fluid velocity and an internal stress tensor that is transported along the flow with the Zaremba-Jaumann derivative. Moreover, the stress tensor obeys a nonlinear and nonsmooth dissipation law as well as stress diffusion. We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions satisfying an energy inequality under general Dirichlet conditions for the velocity field and Neumann conditions for the stress tensor.
We propose a new Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to incompressible viscoelasticity at large strains, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model and formulated in the Eulerian configuration. A new kind of diffusive regularization, of Allen-Cahn type, is introduced in the transport equation for the deformation gradient, together with a regularizing interface term depending on the gradient of the deformation gradient in the free energy of the system. We study the global existence of a weak solution for the model. While standard diffusive regularizations of the transport equation for …
