The quantization scheme based on reduction of the physical states \cite{Park:2014tia} is extended to two gravity-matter systems and pure dS gravity. For the gravity-matter systems we focus on quantization in a flat background for simplicity, and renormalizability is established through gauge-fixing of matter degrees of freedom. Quantization of pure dS gravity has several new novel features. It is noted that the infrared divergence does not arise in the present scheme of quantization. The lapse function constraint plays a crucial role.
When the bulk spacetime has a foliation structure, the collective dynamics of the hypersurfaces should reveal certain aspects of the bulk physics. The procedure of reducing the bulk to a hypersurface, called ADM reduction, was implemented in \cite{Park:2013iqa} where the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action was reduced along the radial reduction. In this work, reduction along the angular directions is considered {with a main goal to firmly establish the method of dimensional reduction to a hypersurface of foliation.} We obtain a theory on a 2D plane (the $(t,r)$-plane) and observe that novel and elabora…
We reduce the BTZ spacetime to two kinds of hypersurfaces of foliation: one having a fixed radial coordinate and the other a fixed angular coordinate. The radial reduction leads to a Liouville type theory, and confirms, from the first principle, the expectation laid out in the literature. In the other endeavor, the angular reduction of the 3D gravity is carried out in two different ways; the first again yields a Liouville type theory (different from that of the radial reduction) and the second yields a 2D interacting quantum field theory with quartic potential. Finally we discuss potential imp…
We carry out ADM splitting in the Lagrangian formulation and establish a procedure in which (almost) all of the unphysical components of the metric are removed by using the 4D diffeomorphism and the measure-zero 3D symmetry. The procedure introduces a constraint that corresponds to the Hamiltonian constraint of the Hamiltonian formulation, and its solution implies that the 4D dynamics admits an effective description through 3D hypersurface physics. As far as we can see, our procedure implies potential renormalizability of {the ADM formulation of} 4D Einstein gravity for which a complete gauge-…
Recently it was found that quantum gravity theories may involve constructing a quantum theory on non-Cauchy hypersurfaces. However this is problematic since the ordinary Poisson brackets are not causal in this case. We suggest a method to identify classical brackets that are causal on 2+1 non-Cauchy hypersurfaces and use it in order to show that the evolution of scalars and vectors fields in the 3rd spatial direction can be constructed by using a Hamilton-like procedure. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this result to quantum gravity.
We reduce the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action to a constant-radius hypersurface of foliation. The resulting theory is a scalar theory defined on a 3D hypersurface of the original black hole background, and has an exponential potential. Once the the hypersurface is located at the Schwarzschild radius, the 3D theory is effectively reduced to a 2D Liouville type theory. We compute {the entropy associated with the hypersurface intrinsic degrees of freedom}, and show that its leading order reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The subleading terms come in logarithm/inverse powers of the area.
Colliding and intersecting hypersurfaces filled with matter (membranes) are studied in the Lovelock higher order curvature theory of gravity. Lovelock terms couple hypersurfaces of different dimensionalities, extending the range of possible intersection configurations. We restrict the study to constant curvature membranes in constant curvature AdS and dS background and consider their general intersections. This illustrates some key features which make the theory different to the Einstein gravity. Higher co-dimension membranes may lie at the intersection of co-dimension 1 hypersurfaces in Lovel…
We have recently proposed in \cite{Park:2014tia} the quantization of pure 4D Einstein gravity through hypersurface foliation, and observed that the 4D Einstein gravity becomes renormalizable once all (or most) of the unphysical degrees of freedom are removed. In this work, we confirm this observation from a more mathematical angle. In particular, we show that the physical state condition arising from the shift vector constraint connects with the requirement that the manifold admit "totally geodesic (TG) foliation". The TG foliation, in turn, makes it possible to view the 4D manifold as abelian…
A theory of gravity in higher dimensions is considered. The usual Einstein-Hilbert action is supplemented with Lovelock terms, of higher order in the curvature tensor. These terms are important for the low energy action of string theories. The intersection of hypersurfaces is studied in the Lovelock theory. The study is restricted to hypersurfaces of co-dimension 1, $(d-1)$-dimensional submanifolds in a $d$-dimensional space-time. It is found that exact thin shells of matter are admissible, with a mild form of curvature singularity: the first derivative of the metric is discontinuous across th…
For a variety of diffeomorphism-invariant field theories describing hypersurface motions (such as relativistic M-branes in space-time dimension M+2) we perform a Hamiltonian reduction ``at level 0'', showing that a simple algebraic function of the normal velocity is canonically conjugate to the shape Σof the hypersurface. The Hamiltonian dependence on Σis solely via the domain of integration, raising hope for a consistent, reparametrisation-invariant quantization.
For any spherically symmetric black hole spacetime with an ideal fluid source, we establish a dual fluid system on a hypersurface near the black hole horizon. The dual fluid is incompressible and obeys Navier-Stokes equation subject to some external force. The force term in the fluid equation consists in two parts, one comes from the curvature of the hypersurface, the other comes from the stress-energy of the bulk fluid.
In a recent paper we quantized the interaction of gravity with a Yang-Mills and Higgs field and obtained as a result a gravitational wave equation in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. Assuming that the Cauchy hypersurfaces are compact we proved a spectral resolution for the wave equation by applying the method of separation of variables. In this paper we extend the results to the case when the Cauchy hypersurfaces are non-compact by considering a Gelfand triplet and applying the nuclear spectral theorem.
Imposing the Petrov-like boundary condition on the hypersurface at finite cutoff, we derive the hydrodynamic equation on the hypersurface from the bulk Einstein equation with electromagnetic field in the near horizon limit. We first get the general framework for spacetime with matter field, and then derive the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for black holes with electric charge and magnetic charge respectively. Especially, in the magnetic case, the standard magnetohydrodynamic equations will arise due to the existence of the background electromagnetic field on the hypersurface.
The U(1)$^3$ model for 3+1 Euclidian signature general relativity is an interacting, generally covariant field theory with two physical polarisations that shares many features of Lorentzian general relativity. In particular, it displays a non-trivial realisation of the hypersurface deformation algebroid with non-trivial, i.e. phase space dependent structure functions rather than structure constants. In this paper we show that the model admits {\it an exact quantisation}. The quantisation rests on the observation that for this model and in the chosen representation of the canonical commutation …
We present a proof of the positivity of the Bondi energy in Einstein-Maxwell axion-dilaton gravity, being the low-energy limit of the heterotic string theory. We consider the spacelike hypersurface which asymptotically approaches a null cone and on which the equations of the theory under consideration are given. Next, we generalize the proof allowing the hypersurface having inner boundaries.
Intersecting hypersurfaces in classical Lovelock gravity are studied exploiting the description of the Lovelock Lagrangian as a sum of dimensionally continued Euler densities. We wish to present an interesting geometrical approach to the problem. The analysis allows us to deal most efficiently with the division of space-time into a honeycomb network of cells produced by an arbitrary arrangement of membranes of matter. We write the gravitational action as bulk terms plus integrals over each lower dimensional intersection. The spin connection is discontinuous at the shared boundaries of the cell…
In canonical gravity, general covariance is implemented by hypersurface-deformation symmetries on phase space. The different versions of hypersurface deformations required for full covariance have complicated interplays with one another, governed by non-Abelian brackets with structure functions. For spherically symmetric space-times, it is possible to identify a certain Abelian substructure within general hypersurface deformations, which suggests a simplified realization as a Lie algebra. The generators of this substructure can be quantized more easily than full hypersurface deformations, but …
A basic assumption in classical GR is that the metric field is nowhere degenerate in spacetime. In particular the induced metric on Cauchy surfaces must be nowhere degenerate. It is only under this assumption that one can derive the hypersurace deformation algebra between the initial value constraints which is absolutely transparent from the fact that the {\it inverse} of the induced metric is needed to close the algebra. This statement is independent of the density weight that one may want to equip the spatial metric with. Accordingly, the very definition of a non-anomalous representation of …
We argue that quantum gravity theories should involve constructing a quantum theory on non-Cauchy hypersurfaces and suggest that the hypersurface direction should be the same as the direction of the effective non-gravitational force field at a point. We start with a short review of works which support this idea and then we foliate spacetime along an effective non-gravitational force field direction. Next we discuss the implication of this foliation on the expected properties of quantum gravity. We also discuss the vagueness caused by constructing any quantum theory when using non-Cauchy foliat…
Strongly coupled gravitational systems describe Einstein gravity and matter in the limit that Newton's constant G is assumed to be very large. The nonlinear evolution of these systems may be solved analytically in the classical and semiclassical limits by employing a Green function analysis. Using functional methods in a Hamilton-Jacobi setting, one may compute the generating functional (`the phase of the wavefunctional') which satisfies both the energy constraint and the momentum constraint. Previous results are extended to encompass the imposition of an arbitrary initial hypersurface. A Lagr…
We consider in the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence the dynamics of hypersurfaces located in the holographic radial direction at r = r_0. We prove that these hypersurfaces evolve, to all orders in the derivative expansion and including all higher curvature corrections, according to the same hydrodynamics equations with identical transport coefficients. The analysis is carried out for normal fluids as well as for superfluids. Consequently, this proves the exactness of the bulk viscosity formula derived in arXiv:1103.1657 via the null horizon dynamics.
We show that for four-dimensional spacetimes with a non-null hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector and for a Chern-Simons (CS) background (non-dynamical) scalar field, which is constant along the Killing vector, the source-free equations of CS modified gravity decouple into their Einstein and Cotton constituents. Thus, the model supports only general relativity solutions. We also show that, when the cosmological constant vanishes and the gradient of the CS scalar field is parallel to the non-null hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector of constant length, CS modified gravity reduces to topolog…
It is shown that in the Einstein-conformally coupled Higgs--Maxwell system with Friedman-Robertson-Walker symmetries the energy density of the Higgs field has stable local minimum only if the mean curvature of the $t={\rm const}$ hypersurfaces is less than a finite critical value $χ_c$, while for greater mean curvature the energy density is not bounded from below. Therefore, there are extreme gravitational situations in which even quasi-locally defined instantaneous vacuum states of the Higgs sector cannot exist, and hence one cannot at all define the rest mass of all the classical fields. On …
We discuss some problems related to dimensional reductions of gravity theories to two-dimensional and one-dimensional dilaton gravity models. We first consider the most general cylindrical reductions of the four-dimensional gravity and derive the corresponding (1+1)-dimensional dilaton gravity, paying a special attention to a possibility of producing nontrivial cosmological potentials from pure geometric variables (so to speak, from `nothing'). Then we discuss further reductions of two-dimensional theories to the dimension one by a general procedure of separating the space and time variables. …
We perform a brief review on Dirac's procedure applied to the well known Einstein's linearized gravity in $N > 2$ dimensions. Considering it as a gauge theory and therefore the manifestation of second class constraints in analogy with the electromagnetic case, focussing our interest in the Coulomb's gauge. We also check the consistency with the Maskawa-Nakajima reduction procedure and end with some remarks on both procedures.
It is argued that degrees of freedom responsible for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a black hole in induced gravity are described by two dimensional quantum field theory defined on the bifurcation surface of the horizon. This result is proved for a class of induced gravity models with scalar, spinor and vector heavy constituents.
Kaluza-Klein reduction of the 3-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons term leads to a 2-dimensional theory that supports a symmetry breaking solution and an associated kink interpolating between AdS and dS geometries.
Einstein-aether theory is general relativity coupled to a dynamical, unit timelike vector. If this vector is restricted in the action to be hypersurface orthogonal, the theory is identical to the IR limit of the extension of Horava gravity proposed by Blas, Pujolàs and Sibiryakov. Hypersurface orthogonal solutions of Einstein-aether theory are solutions to the IR limit of this theory, hence numerous results already obtained for Einstein-aether theory carry over.
A general framework for effective theories propagating two tensor and one scalar degrees of freedom is investigated. Geometrically, it describes dynamical foliation of spacelike hypersurfaces coupled to a general background, in which the scalar mode encodes the fluctuation of the hypersurfaces. Within this framework, various models in the literature---including $k$-essence, Horndeski theory, the effective field theory of inflation, ghost condensate as well as the Hořava gravity---get unified. Our framework generalizes the Horndeski theory in the sense that, it propagates the correct number of …
We study the gravitational Dirichlet problem in AdS spacetimes with a view to understanding the boundary CFT interpretation. We define the problem as bulk Einstein's equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions on fixed timelike cut-off hypersurface. Using the fluid/gravity correspondence, we argue that one can determine non-linear solutions to this problem in the long wavelength regime. On the boundary we find a conformal fluid with Dirichlet constitutive relations, viz., the fluid propagates on a `dynamical' background metric which depends on the local fluid velocities and temperature. This …

We show how to obtain the two-dimensional black hole action by dimensional reduction of the three-dimensional Einstein action with a non-zero cosmological constant. Starting from the Chern-Simons formulation of 2+1 gravity, we obtain the 1+1 dimensional gauge formulation given by Verlinde. Remarkably, the proposed reduction shares the relevant features of the formulation of Cangemi and Jackiw, without the need for a central charge in the algebra. We show how the Lagrange multipliersin these formulations appear naturally as the remnants of the three dimensional connection associated to symmetri…
Consistent reductions of higher-dimensional (matter-coupled) gravity theories on spheres have been constructed and classified in an important paper by Cvetič, Lü and Pope. We close a gap in the classification and study the case when the resulting lower-dimensional theory is two-dimensional. We construct the consistent reduction of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity on a $d$-sphere $S^d$ to two-dimensional dilaton-gravity coupled to a gauged sigma model with target space ${\rm SL}(d+1)/{\rm SO}(d+1)$. The truncation contains solutions of type AdS$_2\times Σ_d$ where the internal space $Σ_d$ is a …
For asymptotically flat spacetimes, using the inverse mean curvature flow, we show that any compact $2$-surface, $S_0$, whose mean curvature and its derivative for outward direction are positive in spacelike hypersurface with non-negative Ricci scalar satisfies the inequality $A_0 \leq 4 π(3Gm)^2$, where $A_0$ is the area of $S_0$ and $m$ is the total mass. The upper bound is realized when $S_0$ is the photon sphere in a hypersurface isometric to $t=$const. slice of the Schwarzschild spacetime.
In canonical gravity, covariance is implemented by brackets of hypersurface-deformation generators forming a Lie algebroid. Lie algebroid morphisms therefore allow one to relate different versions of the brackets that correspond to the same space-time structure. An application to examples of modified brackets found mainly in models of loop quantum gravity can in some cases map the space-time structure back to the classical Riemannian form after a field redefinition. For one type of quantum corrections (holonomies), signature change appears to be a generic feature of effective space-time, and i…
It is shown that the Wheeler DeWitt constraint of canonical gravity coupled to Klein Gordon scalar fields and expressed in terms of Ashtekar's variables admits formal solutions which are parametrized by loops in the three dimensional hypersurface and which are extensions of the well known Wilson loop solutions found by Jacobson, Rovelli and Smolin.
An alternative to usual dimensional reduction for gravity is analyzed, in the vielbein-spin connection formulation. Usual 4d Einstein gravity plus a topological term (the "Born-Infeld" Lagrangian for gravity), is shown to be obtained by a generalized dimensional reduction from 5d Chern-Simons gravity. Chern-Simons gravity in d=2n+1 is dimensionally reduced to CS gravity in d=2n-1 via a mechanism similar to descent equations. The consistency of the dimensional reduction in both cases is analyzed. The dimensional reduction of d=2n+2 Born-Infeld gravity to d=2n BI gravity, as well as d=2n BI grav…
Hints from a number of different approaches to quantum gravity point to a phenomenon of "spontaneous dimensional reduction" to two spacetime dimensions near the Planck scale. I examine the physical meaning of the term "dimension" in this context, summarize the evidence for dimensional reduction, and discuss possible physical explanations.
We investigate the consequences of combining swampland conjectures with the requirement of asymptotic safety. To this end, we explore the infrared regime of asymptotically safe gravity in the quadratic one-loop approximation, and we identify the hypersurface spanned by the endpoints of asymptotically safe renormalization group trajectories. These comprise the allowed values of higher-derivative couplings as well as standard logarithmic form factors. We determine the intersection of this hypersurface with the regions of parameter space allowed by the weak-gravity conjecture, the swampland de Si…
A number of very different approaches to quantum gravity contain a common thread, a hint that spacetime at very short distances becomes effectively two dimensional. I review this evidence, starting with a discussion of the physical meaning of "dimension" and concluding with some speculative ideas of what dimensional reduction might mean for physics.
We propose the three-dimensional bulk dual for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled with CFT$_2$ bath based on partial reduction. The bulk dual is classical AdS gravity with a defect brane which has small fluctuation in transverse direction. We derive full Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity action by considering the transverse fluctuation as a dilaton field. We demonstrate that the fine grained entropy computed from island formula precisely agrees with that computed from defect extremal surface. Our construction provides a Lorentzian higher dimensional dual for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and therefore offe…
The hypersurface deformation algebra consists in a fruitful approach to derive deformed solutions of general relativity based on symmetry considerations with quantum gravity effects, whose linearization has been recently demonstrated to be connected to the DSR program by the $κ$-Poincaré symmetry. Based on this approach, we analyzed the solution derived for the interior of a black hole and we found similarities with the, so called, rainbow metrics, like a momentum-dependence of the metric functions. Moreover, we derived an effective, time-dependent Planck length and compared different regulari…
Several lines of evidence suggest that quantum gravity at very short distances may behave effectively as a two-dimensional theory. I summarize these hints, and offer an additional argument based on the strong-coupling limit of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The resulting scenario suggests a novel approach to quantum gravity at the Planck scale.
We study the quantization of two versions of unimodular gravity, namely, fully diffeomorphism-invariant unimodular gravity and unimodular gravity with fixed metric determinant utilizing standard path integral approach. We derive the BRST symmetry of effective actions corresponding to several relevant gauge conditions. We observe that for some gauge conditions, the restricted gauge structure may complicate the formulation and effective actions, in particular, if the chosen gauge conditions involve the canonical momentum conjugate to the induced metric on the spatial hypersurface. The BRST symme…
We review the noncommutative gravity of Wess et al. and discuss its physical applications. We define noncommutative symmetry reduction and construct deformed symmetric solutions of the noncommutative Einstein equations. We apply our framework to find explicit deformed cosmological and black hole solutions and discuss their phenomenology. This article is based on a joint work with Thorsten Ohl.
We study dimensional reductions of noncommutative electrodynamics on flat space which lead to gauge theories of gravitation. For a general class of such reductions, we show that the noncommutative gauge fields naturally yield a Weitzenbock geometry on spacetime and that the induced diffeomorphism invariant field theory can be made equivalent to a teleparallel formulation of gravity which macroscopically describes general relativity. The Planck length is determined in this setting by the Yang-Mills coupling constant and the noncommutativity scale. The effective field theory can also contain hig…
Results from a number of different approaches to quantum gravity suggest that the effective dimension of spacetime may drop to $d=2$ at small scales. I show that two different dimensional estimators in causal set theory display the same behavior, and argue that a third, the spectral dimension, may exhibit a related phenomenon of "asymptotic silence."
There are at least four versions of Horava-Lishitz gravity in the literature. We consider the version without the detailed balance condition with the projectability condition and address one aspect of the theory: avoidance of caustics for constant time hypersurfaces. We show that there is no caustic with plane symmetry in the absence of matter source if λ\ne 1. If λ=1 is a stable IR fixed point of the renormalization group flow then λis expected to deviate from 1 near would-be caustics, where the extrinsic curvature increases and high-energy corrections become important. Therefore, the absence…
If one replaces the constraints of the Ashtekar-Barbero $SU(2)$ gauge theory formulation of Euclidean gravity by their $U(1)^3$ version, one arrives at a consistent model which captures significant structure of its $SU(2)$ version. In particular, it displays a non trivial realisation of the hypersurface deformation algebra which makes it an interesting testing ground for (Euclidean) quantum gravity as has been emphasised in a recent series of papers due to Varadarajan et al. In this paper we consider a reduced phase space approach to this model. This is especially attractive because, after a c…
If gravity is asymptotically safe, operators will exhibit anomalous scaling at the ultraviolet fixed point in a way that makes the theory effectively two-dimensional. A number of independent lines of evidence, based on different approaches to quantization, indicate a similar short-distance dimensional reduction. I will review the evidence for this behavior, emphasizing the physical question of what one means by `dimension' in a quantum spacetime, and will discuss possible mechanisms that could explain the universality of this phenomenon.
We investigate a cosmological model resulting from a dimensional reduction of the higher-dimensional dRGT massive gravity. By using the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction, we obtain an effective four-dimensional massive gravity theory with a scalar field. It is found that the resulting theory corresponds to a combined description of mass-varying massive gravity and quasi-dilaton massive gravity. By analyzing the cosmological solution, we found that it is possible to obtain the late-time expansion of the universe due to the graviton mass. By using a dynamical system approach, we found regions o…
We examine the Kaluza-Klein (KK) dimensional reduction from higher-dimensional space-time and the properties of the resultant Bergmann-Wagoner general action of scalar-tensor theories. With the analysis of the perturbations, we also investigate the stability of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time in the $D\in\mathcal{N}$-dimensional Einstein gravity with the negative cosmological constant. Furthermore, we derive the conditions for the dimensional reduction to successfully be executed and present the KK compactification mechanism.
Second order degenerate Clèment and Sarıoğlu-Tekin Lagrangians are casted into forms of various first order Lagrangians. Hamiltonian analysis of these equivalent formalisms are performed by means of Dirac-Bergmann constraint algorithm.
A bouncing universe is a viable candidate to solve the initial singularity problem. Here we consider bouncing solutions in the context of $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ gravity by using an order reduction technique which allows one to find solutions that are perturbatively close to General Relativity. This procedure also acts as a model selection approach. Indeed, several covariant gravitational actions leading to a bounce are directly selected by demanding that the Friedmann equation derived within such gravity theories coincides with the one emerging from Loop Quantum Cosmology.
We show the existence of physical superluminal modes and acausality in the Brans-Dicke type of extension of teleparallel gravity that includes F(T) gravity and teleparallel dark energy as special cases. We derive the characteristic hypersurface for the extra degrees of freedom in the theory, thereby showing that the time evolution is not unique and closed causal curves can appear. Furthermore, we present a concrete disastrous solution in Bianchi type I spacetime, in which the anisotropy in expansion can be any function of time, and thus anisotropy can emerge suddenly, a simple demonstration th…
We consider the dilaton gravity models derived by reductions of generalized theories of gravity and study one-dimensional dynamical systems simultaneously describing cosmological and static states in any gauge. Our approach is fully applicable to studying static and cosmological solutions in multidimensional theories and also in general one-dimensional dilaton - scalaron gravity models. We here focus on general and global properties of the models, on seeking integrals, and on analyzing the structure of the solution space. We propose some new ideas in this direction and derive new classes of in…
