In canonical gravity, general covariance is implemented by hypersurface-deformation symmetries on phase space. The different versions of hypersurface deformations required for full covariance have complicated interplays with one another, governed by non-Abelian brackets with structure functions. For spherically symmetric space-times, it is possible to identify a certain Abelian substructure within general hypersurface deformations, which suggests a simplified realization as a Lie algebra. The generators of this substructure can be quantized more easily than full hypersurface deformations, but the symmetries they generate do not directly correspond to hypersurface deformations. The availability of consistent quantizations therefore does not guarantee general covariance or a meaningful quantum notion thereof. In addition to placing the Abelian substructure within the full context of spherically symmetric hypersurface deformation, this paper points out several subtleties relevant for attempted applications in quantized space-time structures. In particular, it follows that recent constructions by Gambini, Olmedo and Pullin in an Abelianized setting fail to address the covariance crisis of loop quantum gravity.
It is known that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit a foliation by °at hypersurfaces. Such foliations have explicitly been constructed for some spacetimes, using different approaches, but none of them have proved or even discussed the uniqueness of these foliations. The issue of uniqueness becomes more important due to suitability of °at foliations for studying black hole physics. Here °at spherically symmetric spacelike hy- persurfaces are obtained by a direct method. It is found that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit °at spherically symmetric hypersurfaces, and that th…
We solve spacelike spherically symmetric constant mean curvature (SS-CMC) hypersurfaces in Schwarzschild spacetimes and analyze their asymptotic behavior near the coordinate singularity r = 2M. Furthermore, we join SS-CMC hypersurfaces in the Kruskal extension to obtain complete ones and discuss the smooth properties.
A recent paper promises new constructions that may make it possible to achieve covariance in spherically symmetric models of loop quantum gravity. This claim is contrary to the discovery of several stubborn obstacles to covariance uncovered in the same models during the last few years. As the authors point out in their abstract, new progress is supposedly possible if one takes into account crucial features of a certain partial Abelianization of the gauge transformations of spherically symmetric gravity, published by the same authors. In canonical form, these gauge transformations are given by …
We consider the problem of determination of a volume of some bounded space-like hypersurfaces in the case of spherically symmetric spacetimes. In the case when the hypersurfaces is cut or bounded by a light-like hypersurface the problem may not be well defined. In order to define properly the volume we introduce the volume forms related to the given foliation (observer) of the considered spacetime. In the case of the constant curvature slice the volume of the hypersurface cut by the horizon (light-like surface) becomes composed of the two parts, outer and inner, treated differently. We compute…
The covariance of loop quantum gravity studies of spherically symmetric space-times has recently been questioned. This is a reasonable worry, given that they are formulated in terms of slicing-dependent variables. We show explicitly that the resulting space-times, obtained from Dirac observables of the quantum theory, are covariant in the usual sense of the way -- they preserve the quantum line element -- for any gauge that is stationary (in the exterior, if there is a horizon). The construction depends crucially on the details of the Abelianized quantization considered, the satisfaction of th…
Using the principle of least action, the motion equations for a singular hypersurface of arbitrary type in quadratic gravity are derived. Equations containing the "external pressure" and the "external flow" components of the surface energy-momentum tensor together with the Lichnerowicz conditions serve to find the hypersurface itself, while the remaining ones define arbitrary functions that arise due to the implicit presence of the delta function derivative. It turns out that neither double layers nor thin shells exist for the quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term. It is shown that there is no "external…
We study the foliation of a $D$-dimensional spherically symmetric black-hole spacetime with $D\ge 5$ by two kinds of one-parameter family of maximal hypersurfaces: a reflection-symmetric foliation with respect to the wormhole slot and a stationary foliation that has an infinitely long trumpet-like shape. As in the four-dimensional case, the foliations by the maximal hypersurfaces have the singularity avoidance nature irrespective of dimensionality. This indicates that the maximal slicing condition will be useful for simulating higher-dimensional black-hole spacetimes in numerical relativity. F…
We present a class of spherically symmetric hypersurfaces in the Kruskal extension of the Schwarzschild space-time. The hypersurfaces have constant negative scalar curvature, so they are hyperboloidal in the regions of space-time which are asymptotically flat.
It is well known that static spherically symmetric spacetimes can admit foliations by flat spacelike hypersurfaces, which are best described in terms of the Painlevè--Gullstrand coordinates. The uniqueness and existence of such foliations were addressed earlier. In this paper, we prove, purely geometrically, that any possible foliation of a static spherically symmetric spacetime by an arbitrary codimension-one spherical spacelike geometry, up to time translation and rotation, is unique, and we find the algebraic condition under which it exists. This leads us to what can be considered as the mo…
We prove that the maximal development of any spherically symmetric spacetime with collisionless matter (obeying the Vlasov equation) or a massless scalar field (obeying the massless wave equation) and possessing a constant mean curvature $S^1 \times S^2$ Cauchy surface also contains a maximal Cauchy surface. Combining this with previous results establishes that the spacetime can be foliated by constant mean curvature Cauchy surfaces with the mean curvature taking on all real values, thereby showing that these spacetimes satisfy the closed-universe recollapse conjecture. A key element of the pr…
Applying the distributional formalism to study the dynamics of thin shells in general relativity, we regain the junction equations for matching of two spherically symmetric spacetimes separated by a singular hypersurface. In particular, we have shown how to define and insert the relevant sign functions in the junction equations corresponding to the signs of the extrinsic curvature tensor occurred in the Darmois-Israel method.
Spherically symmetric shock waves are shown to exist in Lovelock gravity. They amount to a change of branch of the spherically symmetric solutions across a null hypersurface. The implications of their existence for the status of Birkhoff's theorem in the theory is discussed.
Bearing the thermodynamic arguments together with the two definitions of mass in mind, we try to find metrics with spherical symmetry. We consider the adiabatic condition along with the Gong-Wang mass, and evaluate the $g_{rr}$ element which points to a null hypersurface. In addition, we generalize the thermodynamics laws to this hypersurface to find its temperature and thus the corresponding surface gravity which enables us to get a relation for the $g_{tt}$ element. Moreover, we investigate the mathematical and physical properties of the discovered metric in the Einstein relativity framework…
We prove that, for a given spherically symmetric fluid distribution with tangential pressure on an initial spacelike hypersurface with a timelike boundary, there exists a unique, local in time solution to the Einstein equations in a neighbourhood of the boundary. As an application, we consider a particular elastic fluid interior matched to a vacuum exterior.
Spherically symmetric models of loop quantum gravity have been studied recently by different methods that aim to deal with structure functions in the usual constraint algebra of gravitational systems. As noticed by Gambini and Pullin, a linear redefinition of the constraints (with phase-space dependent coefficients) can be used to eliminate structure functions, even Abelianizing the more-difficult part of the constraint algebra. The Abelianized constraints can then easily be quantized or modified by putative quantum effects. As pointed out here, however, the method does not automatically provi…
We study singular hypersurfaces in tensor multi-scalar theories of gravity. We derive in a distributional and then in an intrinsic way, the general equations of junction valid for all types of hypersurfaces, in particular for lightlike shells and write the general equations of evolution for these objects. We apply this formalism to various examples in static spherically symmetric spacetimes, and to the study of planar domain walls and plane impulsive waves.
The main results are the following. We derived the matching conditions for the spherically symmetric singular hypersurface (in our case it is equivalent to the world line) in the Weyl$+$Einstein gravity. It was found, that the residual extrinsic curvature tensor of this surface must be continuous on the singular hypersurface. The result is the same as that found by Senovilla, it is dictated by the very possibility to have the double layer, but the jump in the normal derivative of the radius may be not zero. It was found that in the presence of the double layer, the matching conditions contain …
In this paper we show the existence of a large class of spherically symmetric data $d$ (on a spacelike hypersurface $S$), from which a perfect fluid spacetime (surrounded by vacuum) develops. This spacetime contains an event horizon (with trapped surfaces behind it). The data $d$ are regular and {\it innociuous}, i.e. the data--surface $S$ does not contain any point of the horizon or of the trapped surface area. We give auxiliary data on an auxiliary hypersurface $H$ and also on the star boundary; then we solve Einstein's equations for perfect fluid in the future and past of $H$. Our solution …
Different versions of consistent canonical realizations of hypersurface deformations of spherically symmetric space-times have been derived in models of loop quantum gravity, modifying the classical dynamics and sometimes also the structure of space-time. Based on a canonical version of effective field theory, this paper provides a unified treatment, showing that modified space-time structures are generic in this setting. The special case of Euclidean gravity demonstrates agreement also with existing operator calculations.
The Einstein equations are integrated in the presence of two (incoming and outgoing) streams of null dust, under the assumptions of spherical symmetry and staticity. The solution is also written in double null and radiation coordinates and it is reinterpreted as an anisotropic fluid. Interior matching with a static fluid and exterior matching with the Vaidya solution along null hypersurfaces is discussed. The connection with two-dimensional dilaton gravity is established.
We study the matching of a general spherically symmetric spacetime with a Vaidya-Reissner-Nordstrom solution. To that end, we study the properties of spherically symmetric electromagnetic fields and develop the proper gravitational and electromagnetic junction conditions. We prove that generic spacetimes can be matched to a Vaidya-Reissner-Nordstrom solution or one of its specializations, and that these matchings have clear physical interpretations. Furthermore, the non-spacelike nature of the matching hypersurface is proved under very general hypotheses. We obtain the fundamental result that …
We first summarize the characterization of smooth spacelike spherically symmetric constant mean curvature (SS-CMC) hypersurfaces in the Schwarzschild spacetime and Kruskal extension. Then use the characterization to prove special SS-CMC foliation property, and verify part of the conjecture by Malec and Ó Murchadha in their 2003 paper.
We prove that all spherically symmetric static spacetimes which are both regular at r=0 and satisfying the single energy condition rho + p_r + p_t >= 0 cannot contain any black hole region (equivalently, they must satisfy 2m/r <= 1 everywhere). This result holds even when the spacetime is allowed to contain a finite number of matching hypersurfaces. This theorem generalizes a result by Baumgarte and Rendall when the matter contents of the space-time is a perfect fluid and also complements their results in the general non-isotropic case.
Recent work on an approach to the geometrodynamics of cylindrical gravity waves in the presence of interacting scalar matter fields, based on the Kuchař hypertime formalism, is extended to the analogous spherically symmetric system. This produces a geometrodynamical formalism for spherical black holes and wormholes in which the metric variables are divided into two classes, dynamical and redundant. The redundant variables measure the embedding of a spacelike hypersurface into the spacetime, and proper time in the asymptotically flat regions. All the constraints can be explicitly solved for the…
The spherically symmetric solution for perfect fluid with homogeneous density and inhomogeneous pressure has been considered. This solution is known as Stephani solution. The matching of this solution and de Sitter solution has been done on a hypersurface of constant time. The matching has been done for general case and for particular cases (flat, closed, open universe). An equality of the densities and a bound of the pressures have been shown on the matching hypersurface. Also, restrictions on some arbitrary functions have been found.
It is shown that a scalar field, minimally coupled to gravity may have collapsing modes even when the energy condition is violated, that is, for $(ρ+3p)<0$. This result may be useful in the investigation of the possible clustering of dark energy. All the examples dealt with have apparent horizons which form before the formation of the singularity. The singularities formed are shell focusing in nature. The density of the scalar field distribution is seen to diverge at singularity. The Ricci scalar also diverges at the singularity. The interior spherically symmetric metric is matched with exteri…
A definition of surface gravity at the apparent horizon of dynamical spherically symmetric spacetimes is proposed. It is based on a unique foliation by ingoing null hypersurfaces. The function parametrizing the hypersurfaces can be interpreted as the phase of a light wave uniformly emitted by some far-away static observer. The definition gives back the accepted value of surface gravity in the static case by virtue of its nonlocal character. Although the definition is motivated by the behavior of outgoing null rays, it turns out that there is a simple connection between the generalized surface …
We present a covariant model of a spherically symmetric black hole with corrections motivated by loop quantum gravity. The effective modifications, parametrized by a positive constant $λ$, are implemented through a canonical transformation and a linear combination of the constraints of general relativity, in such a way that the theory remains free of anomalies and general relativity is recovered for $λ=0$. In addition, the corresponding metric is constructed in a fully covariant way to ensure that gauge transformations on phase space correspond to coordinate changes. The solution for each gaug…
We consider a wide class of static spherically symmetric black holes of arbitrary dimension with a photon sphere (a hypersurface on which a massless particle can orbit the black hole on unstable circular null geodesics). This class includes various spacetimes of physical interest such as Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-Tangherlini and Reissner-Nordström black holes, the canonical acoustic black hole or the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. For this class of black holes, we provide general analytical expressions for the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix associated with a massless scalar field theory…
The boundary at $\Cal I^+$, future null infinity, for a standard static, spherically symmetric spactime is examined for possible linear connections. Two independent methods are employed, one for treating $\Cal I^+$ as the future causal boundary, and one for treating it as a conformal boundary (the latter is subsumed in the former, which is of greater generality). Both methods provide the same result: a constellation of various possible connections, depending on an arbitrary choice of a certain function, a sort of gauge freedom in obtaining a natural connection on $\Cal I^+$; choosing that func…
Formulating a perfect fluid filled spherically symmetric metric utilizing the 3+1 formalism for general relativity, we show that the metric coefficients are completely determined by the mass-energy distribution, and its time rate of change on an initial spacelike hypersurface. Rather than specifying Schwarzschild coordinates for the exterior of the collapsing region, we let the interior dictate the form of the solution in the exterior, and thus both regions are found to be written in one coordinate patch. This not only alleviates the need for complicated matching schemes at the interface, but …
In this paper we derive the inverse spatial Laplacian for static, spherically symmetric backgrounds by solving Poisson's equation for a point source. This is different from the electrostatic Green function, which is defined on the four dimensional static spacetime, while the equation we consider is defined on the spatial hypersurface of such spacetimes. This Green function is relevant in the Hamiltonian dynamics of theories defined on spherically symmetric backgrounds, and closed form expressions for the solutions we find are absent in the literature. We derive an expression in terms of elemen…
We examine the solution of the constraints in spherically symmetric general relativity when spacetime has a flat spatial hypersurface. We demonstrate explicitly that given one flat slice, a foliation by flat slices can be consistently evolved. We show that when the sources are finite these slices do not admit singularities and we provide an explicit bound on the maximum value assumed by the extrinsic curvature. If the dominant energy condition is satisfied, the projection of the extrinsic curvature orthogonal to the radial direction possesses a definite sign. We provide both necessary and suff…
The Riemann, Ricci and Einstein tensors for N-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes in various systems of coordinates are studied, and the general metric for conformally flat spacetimes is given. As an application, all the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker-like solutions for a perfect fluid with an equation of state $p = k ρ$ are found. Then, these solutions are used to model the gravitational collapse of a compact ball, by first cutting them along a timelike hypersurface and then joining them with asymptotically flat Vaidya solutions. It is found that when the collapse has continuous self-sim…
We consider a spherical thick shell immersed in two different spherically symmetric space-times. Using the fact that the boundaries of the thick shell with two embedding space-times must be nonsingular hypersurfaces, we develop a scheme to obtain the underlying equation of motion for the thick shell in general. As a simple example, the equation of motion of a spherical dustlike shell in vacuum is obtained. To compare our formalism with the thin shell one, the dynamical equation of motion of the thick shell is then expanded to the first order of its thickness. It is easily seen that the thin sh…
We utilize a recent formulation of a spherically symmetric spacetime endowed with a general decomposition of the energy momentum tensor [Phys. Rev. D, 75, 024031 (2007)] to derive equations governing spherically symmetric distributions of electromagnetic matter. We show the system reduces to the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime in general, spherically symmetric coordinates in the vacuum limit. Furthermore, we show reduction to the charged Vaidya spacetime in non-null coordinates when certain equations of states are chosen. A model of gravitational collapse is discussed whereby a charged fluid resi…
An analysis of conformal geodesics in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter families of spacetimes is given. For both families of spacetimes we show that initial data on a spacelike hypersurface can be given such that the congruence of conformal geodesics arising from this data cover the whole maximal extension of canonical conformal representations of the spacetimes without forming caustic points. For the Schwarzschild-de Sitter family, the resulting congruence can be used to obtain global conformal Gaussian systems of coordinates of the conformal representation. In the…
We investigate the Cauchy problem for the Einstein - scalar field equations in asymptotically flat spherically symmetric spacetimes, in the standard 1+3 formulation. We prove the local existence and uniqueness of solutions for initial data given on a space-like hypersurface in the Sobolev $H_1\cap H_{1,4} $ space. Solutions exist globally if a central (integral) singularity does not form and/or outside an outgoing null hypersurface. An explicit example demonstrates that there exists a local evolution with a naked initial curvature singularity at the symmetry centre.
Using self dual Ashtekar variables, we investigate (at the effective level) the spherically symmetry reduced model of loop quantum gravity, both in vacuum and when coupled to a scalar field. Within the real Ashtekar-Barbero formulation, the system scalar field coupled to spherically symmetric gravity is known to possess a non closed (quantum) algebra of constraints once the holonomy corrections are introduced, which forbids the loop quantization of the model. Moreover, the vacuum case, while not anomalous, introduces modifications which are usually interpreted as an effective signature change …
We derive the equations of motion of a test particle in the equatorial plane around a static and spherically symmetric wormhole influenced by a radiation field including the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect. From the analysis of this dynamical system, we develop a diagnostic to distinguish a black hole from a wormhole, which can be timely supported by several and different observational data. This procedure is based on the possibility of having some wormhole metrics, which smoothly connect to the Schwarzschild metric in a small transition surface layer very close to the black hol…
For a given timelike displacement vector the covariant Hamiltonian quasi-local energy expression requires a proper choice of reference spacetime. We propose a program for determining the reference by embedding a neighborhood of the two-sphere boundary in the dynamic spacetime into a Minkowski reference, so that the two sphere is embedded isometrically, and then extremizing the energy to determine the embedding variables. Applying this idea to Schwarzschild spacetime, we found that for each given future timelike displacement vector our program gives a unique energy value. The static observer me…
We study the evolution of a self-gravitating compressible fluid in spherical symmetry and we prove the existence of weak solutions with bounded variation for the Einstein-Euler equations of general relativity. We formulate the initial value problem in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates and prescribe spherically symmetric data on a characteristic initial hypersurface. We introduce here a broad class of initial data which contain no trapped surfaces, and we then prove that their Cauchy development contains trapped surfaces. We therefore establish the formation of trapped surfaces in weak solution…
Aim of the paper is to obtain 2d analogue of the backreaction equation which will be useful to study final state of quantum perturbed spherically symmetric curved space times. Thus we take Einstein-massless-scalar $ψ$ tensor gravity model described on class of spherically symmetric curved space times. We rewrite the action functional in 2d analogue in terms of dimensionless dilaton-matter field $(χ=Φψ)$ where dilaton field $Φ$ is conformal factor of 2-sphere. Then we seek renormalized expectation value of quantum dilaton-matter field stress tensor operator by applying Hadamard rennormalization…
In this paper we show that there is a breakdown of scattering between the event horizon (or the Cauchy horizon) and an intermediate Cauchy hypersurface in the dynamic interior of a Reissner-Nordström-like black hole. More precisely, we show that the trace operators and their analytic counterparts, the inverse wave operators, do not have bounded inverses, even though these operators themselves are bounded. This result holds for the natural energy given by the energy-momentum tensor of the wave equation using the timelike vector field of the Regge-Wheeler variable, which asymptotically becomes n…
Based on the geometry of the codimension-2 surface in a general spherically symmetric spacetime, we give a quasi-local definition of a photon sphere as well as a photon surface. This new definition is the generalization of the one by Claudel, Virbhadra, and Ellis but without reference to any umbilical hypersurface in the spacetime. The new definition effectively rules out the photon surface which has noting to do with gravity. The application of the definition to the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model of gravitational collapse reduces to a problem of a second order differential equation. We fin…
We consider the deformation of the Schwarzschild solution in general relativity due to spherically symmetric quantum fluctuations of the metric and the matter fields. In this case, the 4D theory of gravity with Einstein action reduces to the effective two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We have found that the Schwarzschild singularity at $r=0$ is shifted to the finite radius $r_{min} \sim r_{Pl}$, where the scalar curvature is finite, so that the space-time looks regular and consists of two asymptotically flat sheets glued at the hypersurface of constant radius.
We analyze the isothermal property in static fluid spheres within the framework of the modified $f(R, T)$ theory of gravitation. The equation of pressure isotropy of the standard Einstein theory is preserved however, the energy density and pressure are expressed in terms of both gravitational potentials. Invoking the isothermal prescription requires that the isotropy condition assumes the role of a consistency condition and an exact model generalizing that of general relativity is found. Moreover it is found that the Einstein model is unstable and acausal while the $f(R, T)$ counterpart is wel…
We analyze in detail the geometry and dynamics of the cosmological region arising in spherically symmetric black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a positive cosmological constant. More precisely, we solve, for such a system, a characteristic initial value problem with data emulating a dynamic cosmological horizon. Our assumptions are fairly weak, in that we only assume that the data approaches that of a subextremal Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black hole, without imposing any rate of decay. We then show that the radius (of symmetry) blows up along any null ray pa…
We introduce a formulation of Eulerian general relativistic hydrodynamics which is applicable for (perfect) fluid data prescribed on either spacelike or null hypersurfaces. Simple explicit expressions for the characteristic speeds and fields are derived in the general case. A complete implementation of the formalism is developed in the case of spherical symmetry. The algorithm is tested in a number of different situations, predisposing for a range of possible applications. We consider the Riemann problem for a polytropic gas, with initial data given on a retarded/advanced time slice of Minkows…
We discuss spherically symmetric black holes in the modified self-dual theory of gravity recently studied by Krasnov, obtained adding a Weyl-curvature dependent `cosmological term' to the Plebanski lagrangian for general relativity. This type of modified gravity admits two different types of singularities: one is a true singularity for the theory where the fundamental fields of the theory, as well as the (auxiliary) spacetime metric, become singular, and the other one is a milder "non-metric singularity" where the metric description of the spacetime breaks down but the fundamental fields thems…
We develop a model-independent procedure to single out static and spherically symmetric wormhole solutions based on the general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect and the extension of the ray-tracing formalism in generic static and spherically symmetric wormhole metrics. Simulating the flux emitted by the Poynting-Robertson critical hypersurface (i.e., a stable structure where gravitational and radiation forces attain equilibrium) or also from another X-ray source in these general geometrical environments toward a distant observer, we are able to reconstruct, only locally to the emission r…
We solve the spacelike, spherically symmetric, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in the maximally extended Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime with the charge smaller than the mass. Based on these results, we construct constant mean curvature foliations with fixed or varied mean curvature in each slice in this spacetime.
A multidimensional gravitational model on the manifold $M = M_0 \times \prod_{i=1}^{n} M_i$, where M_i are Einstein spaces ($i \geq 1$), is studied. For $N_0 = dim M_0 > 2$ the $σ$ model representation is considered and it is shown that the corresponding Euclidean Toda-like system does not satisfy the Adler-van-Moerbeke criterion. For $M_0 = R^{N_0}$, $N_0 = 3, 4, 6$ (and the total dimension $D = dim M = 11, 10, 11$, respectively) nonsingular spherically symmetric solutions to vacuum Einstein equations are obtained and their generalizations to arbitrary signatures are considered. It is proved …
We study spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton, in various dimensions. We derive the field equations for suitable ansatz for general D dimensions and construct black hole solutions of various masses numerically in D=4,5,6 and 10 dimensional spacetime with (D-2)-dimensional hypersurface with positive constant curvature. A detailed comparison with the non-dilatonic solutions is made. We also examine the thermodynamic properties of the solutions. It i…
We study a spherically symmetric fluctuation of scalar dark matter in the cosmos and show that it could be the dark matter in galaxies, provided that the scalar field has an exponential potential whose overall sign is negative and whose exponent is constrained observationally by the rotation velocities of galaxies. The local space-time of the fluctuation contains a three dimensional space-like hypersurface with surplus of angle.
We study the behaviour of smooth solutions to the wave equation, $\square_gψ=0$, in the interior of a fixed Schwarzschild black hole. In particular, we obtain a full asymptotic expansion for all solutions towards $r=0$ and show that it is characterised by its first two leading terms, the principal logarithmic term and a bounded second order term. Moreover, we characterise an open set of initial data for which the corresponding solutions blow up logarithmically on the entirety of the singular hypersurface $\{r=0\}$. Our method is based on deriving weighted energy estimates in physical space and…
When using the black hole exclusion (horizon boundary condition) technique, $K$ is usually nonzero and spatially variable, so none of the special cases of York's conformal-decomposition algorithm apply, and the full 4-vector nonlinear York equations must be solved numerically. We discuss the construction of dynamic black hole initial data slices using this technique: We perturb a known black hole slice via some Ansatz, apply the York decomposition (using another Ansatz for the inner boundary conditions) to project the perturbed field variables back into the constraint hypersurface, and finally…
