A self-consistent analytical solution of the multi-subband Boltzmann transport equation with collision term describing grain boundary and surface roughness scattering is presented to study the resistivity scaling in metal nanowires. The different scattering mechanisms and the influence of their statistical parameters are analyzed. Instead of a simple power law relating the height or width of a nanowire to its resistivity, the picture appears to be more complicated due to quantum-mechanical scattering and quantization effects, especially for surface roughness scattering.
We calculate the resistivity contribution of tilted grain boundaries with varying parameters in sub-10nm diameter metallic nanowires. The results have been obtained with the Boltzmann transport equation and Fermi's golden rule, retrieving correct state-dependent relaxation times. The standard approximation schemes for the relaxation times are shown to fail when grain boundary tilt is considered. Grain boundaries tilted under the same angle or randomly tilted induce a resistivity decrease.
We have investigated the time-dependent fluctuations in electrical resistance, or noise, in high quality crystalline magnetic nanowires within nanoporous templates. The noise increases exponentially with increasing temperature and magnetic field, and has been analyzed in terms of domain wall depinning within the Neel-Brown framework. The frequency-dependence of noise also indicates a crossover from nondiffusive kinetics to long-range diffusion at higher temperatures, as well as a strong collective depinning, which need to be considered when implementing these nanowires in magnetoelectronic dev…
A modeling approach, based on an analytical solution of the semiclassical multi-subband Boltzmann transport equation, is presented to study resistivity scaling in metallic thin films and nanowires due to grain boundary and surface roughness scattering. While taking into account the detailed statistical properties of grains, roughness and barrier material as well as the metallic band structure and quantum mechanical aspects of scattering and confinement, the model does not rely on phenomenological fitting parameters.
We study the resistivity scaling in nanometer-sized metallic wires due to surface roughness and grain-boundaries, currently the main cause of electron scattering in nanoscaled interconnects. The resistivity has been obtained with the Boltzmann transport equation, adopting the relaxation time approximation (RTA) of the distribution function and the effective mass approximation for the conducting electrons. The relaxation times are calculated exactly, using Fermi's golden rule, resulting in a correct relaxation time for every sub-band state contributing to the transport. In general, the relaxati…
We have measured the electrical resistivity of a single strand of a ferromagnetic Ni nanowire of diameter 55 nm using a 4-probe method in the temperature range 3 K-300 K. The wire used is chemically pure and is a high quality oriented single crystalline sample in which the temperature independent residual resistivity is determined predominantly by surface scattering. Precise evaluation of the temperature dependent resistivity ($ρ$) allowed us to identify quantitatively the electron-phonon contribution (characterized by a Debye temperature $θ_R$) as well as the spin-wave contribution which is s…
We study longitudinal magnetotransport in disorder-free cylindrical Weyl semimetal nanowires. Our theory includes a magnetic flux $Φ$ piercing the nanowire and captures the finite curvature of the Fermi arc in the surface Brillouin zone through a boundary angle $α$. Electron backscattering by acoustic phonons via the deformation potential causes a finite resistivity which we evaluate by means of the semiclassical Boltzmann approach. We find that low-energy transport is dominated by surface states, where transport observables are highly sensitive to the angle $α$ and to Aharonov-Bohm phases due…
We calculate the resistivity and Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) of a segmented nanowire consisting of two ferromagnetic segments separated by a thin paramagnetic spacer. The quantization of the electron motion due to the small nanowire cross-section is taken into account; s-d electron scattering gives rise to different mean free paths for spin-up and spin-down s-electrons. The calculated resistivity and GMR oscillate as a function of nanowire cross-section due to the difference in Fermi momenta of d-electrons with opposite spins. The GMR can reach values much higher than those which are obtaine…
Ando's model provides a rigorous quantum-mechanical framework for electron-surface roughness scattering, based on the detailed roughness structure. We apply this method to metallic nanowires and improve the model introducing surface roughness distribution functions on a finite domain with analytical expressions for the average surface roughness matrix elements. This approach is valid for any roughness size and extends beyond the commonly used Prange-Nee approximation. The resistivity scaling is obtained from the self-consistent relaxation time solution of the Boltzmann transport equation and i…
Silver nanowires have great application potential in fields like flexible electronic devices, solar cells and transparent electrodes. It is critical and fundamental to study the thermal and electrical transport properties in a single silver nanowire. In this work, the thermal and electrical transport in an individual silver nanowire is characterized down to 35 K with the steady state electro-thermal technique. The results indicate that, at room temperature, the electrical resistivity increases by around 4 folds compared from that of its bulk counterpart. After fitting the temperature dependent…
The increasing resistance of Cu interconnects for decreasing dimensions is a major challenge in continued downscaling of integrated circuits beyond the 7-nm technology node as it leads to unacceptable signal delays and power consumption in computing. The resistivity of Cu increases due to electron scattering at surfaces and grain boundaries of the interconnects at the nanoscale. Topological semimetals, owing to their topologically protected surface states and suppressed electron backscattering, are promising material candidates to potentially replace current Cu interconnects as low-resistance …
We extend quantum models of nanowire surface scattering to incorporate bulk resistivity and extract an expression for the increased resistivity due to surface roughness. To learn how to improve conductivity, we calculate conductivity degradation from individual wavelengths of surface roughness, and show how these can be convolved to give resistivity for arbitrary surfaces. We review measurements from Cu films and conclude that roughness at short wavelengths (less than 100 nm) dominates scattering, and that primarily specular scattering should be achievable for RMS roughness below about 0.7 nm.
Graphene nanoribbon interconnects are fabricated, and the extracted resistivity is compared to that of Cu. It is found that the average resistivity at a given line-width (18nm<W<52nm) is about 3X that of a Cu wire, whereas the best GNR has a resistivity comparable to that of Cu. The conductivity is found to be limited by impurity scattering as well as LER scattering; as a result, the best reported GNR resistivity is 3X the limit imposed by substrate phonon scattering. This study reveals that even moderate-quality graphene nanowires have the potential to outperform Cu for use as on-chip interco…
Photoresponse of Au nanoparticle functionalized semiconducting GaN (Au-GaN) nanowires is reported for an optical switching using 532 excitation. Wide band gap GaN nanowires are grown by catalyst assisted chemical vapour deposition technique and functionalized with Au in the chemical route. Au-GaN nanowires show surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mode of Au nanoclusters around 550 nm along with characteristic band for GaN around 365 nm. An optical switching is observed for Au-GaN nanowires with a sub-band gap excitation of 532 nm suggesting possible role of surface plasmon polariton assisted trans…
We present an effective low-energy theory of electron-phonon coupling effects for clean cylindrical topological insulator nanowires. Acoustic phonons are modelled by isotropic elastic continuum theory with stress-free boundary conditions. We take into account the deformation potential coupling between phonons and helical surface Dirac fermions, and also include electron-electron interactions within the bosonization approach. For half-integer values of the magnetic flux $Φ_B$ along the wire, the low-energy theory admits an exact solution since a topological protection mechanism then rules out p…
Heat dissipation issues are the emerging challenges in the field of flexible electronics. Thermal management of flexible electronics creates a demand for flexible materials with highly anisotropic thermal conductivity, which work as heat spreaders to remove excess heat in the in-plane direction and as heat shields to protect human skin or device components under them from heating. This study proposes a self-assembled silver nanowire network with high thermal and electrical anisotropy with the potential to solve these challenges. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the network along the axial …
Ando's surface roughness model is applied to metallic nanowires and extended beyond small roughness size and infinite barrier limit approximations for the wavefunction overlaps, such as the Prange-Nee approximation. Accurate and fast simulations can still be performed without invoking these overlap approximations by averaging over roughness profiles using finite domain distribution functions to obtain an analytic solution for the scattering rates. The simulations indicate that overlap approximations, while predicting a resistivity that agrees more or less with our novel approach, poorly estima…
A comparison of porous structures formed from silicon (Si) wafers with different resistivities has been reported here based on the morphological studies carried out using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The porous Si samples have been prepared using metal induced etching (MIE) technique from two different Si wafers having two different resistivities. It is observed that porous Si containing well aligned Si nanowires are formed from high resistivity (1-20 $Ω$cm) Si wafer whereas interconnected pores or cheese like structures are formed from low resistivity (0.02 $Ω$cm ) Si wafers after MIE.…
The interplay of quantum fluctuations and dissipation in chains of mesoscopic superconducting grains is analyzed, and the results are also applied to nanowires. It is shown that in 1-d arrays of resistively shunted Josephson junctions, the superconducting-normal charge relaxation within the grains plays an important role. At zero temperature, two superconducting phases can exist, depending primarily on the strength of the dissipation. In the fully superconducting phase (FSC), each grain acts superconducting, and the coupling to the dissipative conduction is important. In the SC* phase, the dis…
Magnetoresistance measurements in the CPP geometry have been performed on single electrodeposited Co nanowires exchange biased on one side by a sputtered amorphous GdCo layer. This geometry allows the stabilization of a single domain wall in the Co wire, the thickness of which can be controlled by an external magnetic field. Comparing magnetization, resistivity, and magnetoresistance studies of single Co nanowires, of GdCo layers, and of the coupled system, gives evidence for an additional contribution to the magnetoresistance when the domain wall is compressed by a magnetic field.
