We have investigated the time-dependent fluctuations in electrical resistance, or noise, in high quality crystalline magnetic nanowires within nanoporous templates. The noise increases exponentially with increasing temperature and magnetic field, and has been analyzed in terms of domain wall depinning within the Neel-Brown framework. The frequency-dependence of noise also indicates a crossover from nondiffusive kinetics to long-range diffusion at higher temperatures, as well as a strong collective depinning, which need to be considered when implementing these nanowires in magnetoelectronic devices.
A self-consistent analytical solution of the multi-subband Boltzmann transport equation with collision term describing grain boundary and surface roughness scattering is presented to study the resistivity scaling in metal nanowires. The different scattering mechanisms and the influence of their statistical parameters are analyzed. Instead of a simple power law relating the height or width of a nanowire to its resistivity, the picture appears to be more complicated due to quantum-mechanical scattering and quantization effects, especially for surface roughness scattering.
We calculate the resistivity contribution of tilted grain boundaries with varying parameters in sub-10nm diameter metallic nanowires. The results have been obtained with the Boltzmann transport equation and Fermi's golden rule, retrieving correct state-dependent relaxation times. The standard approximation schemes for the relaxation times are shown to fail when grain boundary tilt is considered. Grain boundaries tilted under the same angle or randomly tilted induce a resistivity decrease.
The strain configuration induced by the lattice mismatch in a core-shell nanowire is calculated analytically, taking into account the crystal anisotropy and the difference in stiffness constants of the two materials. The method is applied to nanowires with the wurtzite structure or the zinc-blende structure with the hexagonal / trigonal axis along the nanowire, and the results are compared to available numerical calculations and experimental data. It is also applied to multishell nanowires, and to core-shell nanowires grown along the $<001>$ axis of cubic semiconductors.
A modeling approach, based on an analytical solution of the semiclassical multi-subband Boltzmann transport equation, is presented to study resistivity scaling in metallic thin films and nanowires due to grain boundary and surface roughness scattering. While taking into account the detailed statistical properties of grains, roughness and barrier material as well as the metallic band structure and quantum mechanical aspects of scattering and confinement, the model does not rely on phenomenological fitting parameters.
We study the resistivity scaling in nanometer-sized metallic wires due to surface roughness and grain-boundaries, currently the main cause of electron scattering in nanoscaled interconnects. The resistivity has been obtained with the Boltzmann transport equation, adopting the relaxation time approximation (RTA) of the distribution function and the effective mass approximation for the conducting electrons. The relaxation times are calculated exactly, using Fermi's golden rule, resulting in a correct relaxation time for every sub-band state contributing to the transport. In general, the relaxati…
We present an investigation in the device parameter space of band-to-band tunneling in nanowires with a diamond cubic or zincblende crystalline structure. Results are obtained from quantum transport simulations based on Non-Equilibrium Green's functions with a tight-binding atomistic Hamiltonian. Interband tunneling is extremely sensitive to the longitudinal electric field, to the nanowire cross section, through the gap, and to the material. We have derived an approximate analytical expression for the transmission probability based on WKB theory and on a proper choice of the effective interban…
Prior experimental studies showed that nanowires are promising structures for improving the thermoelectric performance of practical thermoelectric materials due to the strongly induced phonon-boundary scattering. However, few studies examined the impact of phonon-boundary scattering on the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric nanowires from a first-principle approach. In this work, we systematically study the role of phonon-boundary scattering with different boundary specularities on the thermal conductivity of PbSe nanowires by rigorously solving the full phonon Boltzmann transport equation…
The transport properties of superconducting single crystal Pb nanowires of 55 nm and 70 nm diameter are studied by standard four electrodes method. Resistance-temperature (R-T) scans and magneto-resistance (R-H) measurements show a series of resistance steps with increasing temperature and magnetic field as the wires are brought toward the normal state. The resistance-current (R-I) scans at different temperature and magnetic field show that the increase in R with I is punctuated with sharp steps at specific current values. We interpret these steps as consequence of phase slip centers (PSCs) in…
We have measured the electrical resistivity of a single strand of a ferromagnetic Ni nanowire of diameter 55 nm using a 4-probe method in the temperature range 3 K-300 K. The wire used is chemically pure and is a high quality oriented single crystalline sample in which the temperature independent residual resistivity is determined predominantly by surface scattering. Precise evaluation of the temperature dependent resistivity ($ρ$) allowed us to identify quantitatively the electron-phonon contribution (characterized by a Debye temperature $θ_R$) as well as the spin-wave contribution which is s…
Photoconductors based on semiconducting thin films, nanowires and 2-dimensional atomic layers have been extensively investigated. But there is no explicit photogain equation that allows for fitting and designing photoresponses of these devices. In this work, we managed to derive explicit photogain equations for silicon nanowire photoconductors based on experimental observations. The silicon nanowires were fabricated by patterning the device layer of silicon-on-insulator wafers by standard lithography that were doped with boron. It was found that the as-fabricated silicon nanowires have a surfa…
We study longitudinal magnetotransport in disorder-free cylindrical Weyl semimetal nanowires. Our theory includes a magnetic flux $Φ$ piercing the nanowire and captures the finite curvature of the Fermi arc in the surface Brillouin zone through a boundary angle $α$. Electron backscattering by acoustic phonons via the deformation potential causes a finite resistivity which we evaluate by means of the semiclassical Boltzmann approach. We find that low-energy transport is dominated by surface states, where transport observables are highly sensitive to the angle $α$ and to Aharonov-Bohm phases due…
We measured the low frequency (10mHz < f < 10Hz) resistance fluctuations (Noise) in single crystalline ferromagnetic Ni nanowires (diameter ~35nm) in the temperature range 80K-300K. The noise spectral power shows 1/f dependence. The nanowires in an applied magnetic field show negative magetoresistance that saturates for H <= HC. The noise spectral power shows a reduction in low applied field and becomes field independent for H >= HC. This indicates that a part of the observed 1/f noise arises from magnetic origin. The magnetic part is associated with thermally activated domain wall fluctuation…
We calculate the resistivity and Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) of a segmented nanowire consisting of two ferromagnetic segments separated by a thin paramagnetic spacer. The quantization of the electron motion due to the small nanowire cross-section is taken into account; s-d electron scattering gives rise to different mean free paths for spin-up and spin-down s-electrons. The calculated resistivity and GMR oscillate as a function of nanowire cross-section due to the difference in Fermi momenta of d-electrons with opposite spins. The GMR can reach values much higher than those which are obtaine…
Demonstrating the topological protection of Andreev states in Josephson junctions is an experimental challenge. In particular the telltale $4π$ periodicity expected for the current phase relation of topological Josephson junctions has remained elusive, because of fast parity breaking processes. It was predicted that low temperature ac susceptibility measurements related to the current thermal noise could reveal the topological protection of quantum Spin Hall edge states \cite{Fu2009}, by probing their low energy Andreev spectrum.% of QSH-based Josephson junctions. We have performed such a micr…
While bulk bismuth (Bi) is a semimetal, we have found clear evidence of superconductivity in a crystalline 72 nm diameter Bi nanowire below 1.3 K. In a parallel magnetic field (H), the residual resistance of the nanowire below Tc displays periodic oscillations with H, and the period corresponds to the superconducting flux quantum. This result provides evidence that the superconductivity comes from the interface shell between Bi and the surface oxide. In a perpendicular H, the resistance in the superconducting state shows Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, a signature of a normal metal. Thes…
We present experimental evidence of emergent density wave instability in single crystalline low dimensional wires of Yittrium based Pyrochlore Iridates. We demonstrate electric field induced nonlinear hysteretic switching of the density wave at low temperature, followed by smooth nonlinear conduction at higher temperature (T > 40 K) in $Y_{2-x}Bi_{x}Ir_{2}O_{7}$ with x = 0 and 0.3. AC transport measurements reveal the presence of four different collective relaxation processes which dominate at different temperature scales. There is a strong coupling of the normal charge carriers with the densi…
Silicon nanowires are prepared by the method of the two-step metal-assisted wet chemical etching. We have analyzed the structure of solid, rough and porous nanowire surfaces of boron-doped silicon substrates with resistivities of ρ> 1000 Ωcm, ρ= 14-23 Ωcm, ρ< 0.01 Ωcm by scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen gas adsorption. Silicon nanowires prepared from highly-doped silicon reveal mesopores on their surface. However, we found a limit for pore formation. Pores were only formed by etching below a critical H$_2$O$_2$ concentration (c$_{\mbox{H}_2\mbox{O}_2}$ < 0.3 M). Furthermore, we have d…
Confining two dimensional Dirac fermions on the surface of topological insulators has remained an outstanding conceptual challenge. Here we show that Dirac fermion confinement is achievable in topological crystalline insulators (TCI), which host multiple surface Dirac cones depending on the surface termination and the symmetries it preserves. This confinement is most dramatically reflected in the flux dependence of these Dirac states in the nanowire geometry, where different facets connect to form a closed surface. Using SnTe as a case study, we show how wires with all four facets of the <100>…
We report on the fabrication and measurements of a superconducting junction of a single-crystalline Au nanowire, connected to Al electrodes. Current-Voltage characteristic curve shows clear supercurrent branch below the superconducting transition temperature of Al and quantized voltage plateaus on application of microwave radiation, as expected from Josephson relations. Highly transparent (0.95) contacts very close to an ideal limit of 1 are formed at the interface between the normal metal (Au) and the superconductor (Al). The very high transparency is ascribed to the single crystallinity of a…
Ando's model provides a rigorous quantum-mechanical framework for electron-surface roughness scattering, based on the detailed roughness structure. We apply this method to metallic nanowires and improve the model introducing surface roughness distribution functions on a finite domain with analytical expressions for the average surface roughness matrix elements. This approach is valid for any roughness size and extends beyond the commonly used Prange-Nee approximation. The resistivity scaling is obtained from the self-consistent relaxation time solution of the Boltzmann transport equation and i…
One of the cornerstones for topological quantum computations is the Majorana zero mode, which has been intensively searched in fractional quantum Hall systems and topological superconductors. Several recent works suggest that such an exotic mode can also exist in a one-dimensional (1D) interacting double-wire setup even without long-range superconductivity. A notable instability in these proposals comes from interchannel single-particle tunneling that spoils the topological ground state degeneracy. Here we show that a 1D Dirac semimetal (DSM) nanowire is an ideal number-conserving platform to …
Silver nanowires have great application potential in fields like flexible electronic devices, solar cells and transparent electrodes. It is critical and fundamental to study the thermal and electrical transport properties in a single silver nanowire. In this work, the thermal and electrical transport in an individual silver nanowire is characterized down to 35 K with the steady state electro-thermal technique. The results indicate that, at room temperature, the electrical resistivity increases by around 4 folds compared from that of its bulk counterpart. After fitting the temperature dependent…
We investigate the relaxation dynamics of photogenerated carriers in silicon nanowires consisting of a crystalline core and a surrounding amorphous shell, using femtosecond time-resolved differential reflectivity and transmission spectroscopy at photon energies of 3.15 eV and 1.57 eV. The complex behavior of the differential transmission and reflectivity transients is the mixed contributions from the crystalline core and the amorphous silicon on the nanowire surface and the substrate where competing effects of state filling and photoinduced absorption govern the carrier dynamics. Faster relaxa…
We have performed thermal conductance measurements on individual single crystalline silicon suspended nanowires. The nanowires (130 nm thick and 200 nm wide) are fabricated by e-beam lithography and suspended between two separated pads on Silicon On Insulator (SOI) substrate. We measure the thermal conductance of the phonon wave guide by the 3 method. The cross-section of the nanowire approaches the dominant phonon wavelength in silicon which is of the order of 100 nm at 1K. Above 1.3K the conductance behaves as T3, but a deviation is measured at the lowest temperature which can be att…
The increasing resistance of Cu interconnects for decreasing dimensions is a major challenge in continued downscaling of integrated circuits beyond the 7-nm technology node as it leads to unacceptable signal delays and power consumption in computing. The resistivity of Cu increases due to electron scattering at surfaces and grain boundaries of the interconnects at the nanoscale. Topological semimetals, owing to their topologically protected surface states and suppressed electron backscattering, are promising material candidates to potentially replace current Cu interconnects as low-resistance …
We have measured the resistances (and resistivities) of Ag and Cu nanowires of diameters ranging from 15nm to 200nm in the temperature range 4.2K-300K with the specific aim to assess the applicability of the Bloch-Grüneisen formula for electron phonon resistivity in these nanowires. The wires were grown within polymeric templates by electrodeposition. We find that in all the samples the resistance reaches a residual value at T=4.2K and the temperature dependence of resistance can be fitted to the Bloch-Grüneisen formula in the entire temperature range with a well defined transport Debye temper…

Topological insulators (TIs) and topological crystal insulators (TCIs) exhibit exotic surface properties. We present optimised growth procedures to obtain high quality bulk crystals of the TCIs Pb_(1-x)Sn_(x)Te and Pb_(1-x)Sn_(x)Se, and nanowires from the bulk crystals using the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) technique. Nanowires of Pb_(1-x)Sn_(x)Te have been produced with a Sn composition of approx. x = 0.25, at which a transition from trivial to non-trivial insulator is reported. The results obtained on the growth of nanomaterials of Pb_(1-x)Sn_(x)Se are also described. Detailed characterisation …
We report on \textit{in situ} growth of crystalline Al and Nb shells on InAs nanowires. The nanowires are grown on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) without foreign catalysts in the vapor-solid mode. The metal shells are deposited by electron-beam evaporation in a metal MBE. High quality supercondonductor/semiconductor hybrid structures such as Al/InAs and Nb/InAs are of interest for ongoing research in the fields of gateable Josephson junctions and quantum information related research. Systematic investigations of the deposition parameters suitable for metal shell growth are …
A facile, low-temperature precipitation-based method is utilized to demonstrate the synthesis of ultra-thin and highly-uniform cesium lead bromide perovskite nanowires (NWs). The reactions facilitate the NWs crystalline nature over micron-size lengths, while they impart tailored nanowire widths that range from the quantum confinement regime (~ 7 nm) and down to 2.6 nm. This colloidal synthesis approach is the first of its kind that is carried out on the work-bench, without demanding chemical synthesis equipment. Importantly, the NWs photoluminescence is shown to become improved over time, with…
We report the experimental observation of the transverse spin and associated spin-momentum locking of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited in a plasmonic single crystalline silver nanowire (AgNW). In contrast to the SPPs excited in metal films, the electromagnetic field components of the evanescent SPP mode propagating along the long axis ($x$ axis) of the NW can decay along two longitudinal planes ($x$-$y$ and $x$-$z$ planes), resulting in two orthogonal transverse spin components ($s_z$ and $s_y$). Analysis of the opposite circular polarization components of the decaying SPP mode signal…
We report experimental evidence of surface dominated transport in single crystalline nanoflake devices of topological insulator Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.8Se1.2. The resistivity measurements show dramatic difference between the nanoflake devices and bulk single crystal. The resistivity and Hall analysis based on a two-channel model indicates that ~99% surface transport contribution can be realized in 200 nm thick BSTS nanoflake devices. Using standard bottom gate with SiO2 as a dielectric layer, pronounced ambipolar electric field effect was observed in devices fabricated with flakes of 100 - 200 nm thick…
An optical characterization tool of Raman spectroscopy with extremely weak scattering cross section tool is not popular to analyze scattered signal from a single nanostructure in the sub-diffraction regime. In this regard, plasmonic assisted characterization tools are only relevant in spectroscopic studies of nanoscale object in the sub-diffraction limit. We have reported polarized resonance Raman spectroscopic (RRS) studies with strong electron-phonon coupling to understand the crystalline orientation of a single AlGaN nanowire of diameter about 100 nm. AlGaN nanowire is grown by chemical vap…
Single-crystalline β-Ag2Se nanostructures, a new class of 3D topological insulators (TIs), were synthesized using the chemical vapor transport method. The topological surface states were verified by measuring electronic transport properties including the weak antilocalization effect, Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. First-principles band calculations revealed that the band inversion in \b{eta}-Ag2Se is caused by strong spin-orbit coupling and Ag-Se bonding hybridization. These extensive investigations provide new meaningful information about silver-chalcogenide T…
We demonstrate propagation of plasmons in single crystalline silver nanostructures fabricated using a combination of a bottom-up and a top-down approach. Silver nanoplates of thickness around 65 nm and a surface area of about 100 μm^2 are made using a wet chemical method. Silver nanotips and nanowires are then sculptured by focused ion beam milling. The plasmons are excited by using the fluorescence from the redeposited silver clusters during the milling process. Propagation of plasmons in the nanowires is observed in the visible spectral region. We also observe a cavity effect by measuring th…
Correlating synthesis, structure and thermal stability of CuBi nanowires for spintronic applications by electron microscopy and in situ scattering methods
Superconducting nanowires, with a critical temperature of 5.2 K, have been synthesized using an ion-beam-induced deposition, with a Gallium focused ion beam and Tungsten Carboxyl, W(CO)6, as precursor. The films are amorphous, with atomic concentrations of about 40, 40, and 20 % for W, C, and Ga, respectively. Zero Kelvin values of the upper critical field and coherence length of 9.5 T and 5.9 nm, respectively, are deduced from the resistivity data at different applied magnetic fields. The critical current density is Jc= 1.5 10^5 A/cm2 at 3 K. This technique can be used as a template-free fabr…
Recently the memristive electrical transport properties in NbO$_2$ have attracted much attention for their promising application to the neuromorphic computation. At the center of debates is whether the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) originates from the structural distortion (Peierls) or the electron correlation (Mott). With inputs from experiments and first principles calculations, we develop a thermodynamical model rooted in the scenario of the MIT driven by a $2^{nd}$ order Peierls instability. We find that the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity can be accurately fit …
We report in-situ synthesis of crystalline indium islands on InAs nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Structural analysis by transmission electron microscopy showed that In crystals grew in a tetragonal body-centred crystal structure within two families of orientations relative to wurtzite InAs. The crystalline islands had lengths < 500 nm and low-energy surfaces, suggesting that growth was driven mainly by surface energy minimization. Electrical transport through In/InAs devices exhibited Cooper pair charging, evidencing charge parity preservation and a pristine In/InAs interface, with…
Chip-scale integrated light sources are a crucial component in a broad range of photonics applications. III-V semiconductor nanowire emitters have gained attention as a fascinating approach due to their superior material properties, extremely compact size, and the capability to grow directly on lattice-mismatched silicon substrates. Although there have been remarkable advances in nanowire-based emitters, their practical applications are still in the early stages due to the difficulties in integrating nanowire emitters with photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here, we demonstrate for the first…
The magnetic configurations of cylindrical Co-rich CoNi nanowires have been quantitatively analyzed at the nanoscale by electron holography and correlated to local structural and chemical properties. The nanowires display grains of both face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close packed (hcp) crystal structures, with grain boundaries parallel to the nanowire axis direction. Electron holography evidences the existence of a complex exotic magnetic configuration characterized by two distinctly different types of magnetic configurations within a single nanowire: an array of periodical vortices s…
Reduced dimensionality leads to emergent phenomena in quantum materials and there is a need for accelerated materials discovery of nanoscale quantum materials in reduced dimensions. Thermomechanical nanomolding is a rapid synthesis method that produces high quality single-crystalline quantum nanowires with controlled dimensions over wafer-scale sizes. Herein, we apply nanomolding to fabricate nanowires from bulk feedstock of MoP, a triple-point topological metal with extremely high conductivity that is promising for low-resistance interconnects. Surprisingly, we obtained single-crystalline Mo$…
A new class of materials, Topological Crystalline Insulators (TCIs) have been shown to possess exotic surface state properties that are protected by mirror symmetry. These surface features can be enhanced if the surface-area-to-volume ratio of the material increases, or the signal arising from the bulk of the material can be suppressed. We report the experimental procedures to obtain high quality crystal boules of the TCI, SnTe, from which nanowires and microcrystals can be produced by the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) technique. Detailed characterisation measurements of the bulk crystals as well …
Phase change materials can be reversibly switched between amorphous and crystalline states and often show strong contrast in the optical and electrical properties of these two phases. They are now in widespread use for optical data storage, and their fast switching and a pronounced change of resistivity upon crystallization are also very attractive for nonvolatile electronic data storage. Nevertheless there are still several open questions regarding the electronic states and charge transport in these compounds. In this work we study electrical transport in thin metallic films of the disordered…
In a number of recent experiments it has been demonstrated that in ultra-narrow superconducting channels quantum fluctuations of the order parameter, alternatively called quantum phase slips, are responsible for the finite resistance well below the critical temperature. The acceptable agreement between those experiments and the models describing quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors has been established. However the very concept of the phase slip is justified when these fluctuations are the relatively rare events, meaning that the effective resistance of the system shou…
Controllable geometric manipulation via micromachining techniques provides a promising tool for enhancing useful topological electrical responses relevant to future applications such as quantum information science. Here we present microdevices fabricated with focused ion beam from indium-doped topological insulator Pb1-xSnxTe. With device thickness on the order of 1 μm and an extremely large bulk resistivity, we achieve an unprecedented enhancement of the surface contribution to about 30% of the total conductance near room temperature. The surface contribution increases as the temperature is r…
