Let $n_1,\ldots,n_k $ be integers larger than or equal to 2. We characterize linear maps $ϕ: M_{n_1\cdots n_k}\rightarrow M_{n_1\cdots n_k}$ such that $${\mathrm rank}\,(ϕ(A_1\otimes \cdots \otimes A_k))=1\quad\hbox{whenever}\quad{\mathrm rank}\, (A_1\otimes \cdots \otimes A_k)=1 \quad \hbox{for all}\quad A_i \in M_{n_i},\, i = 1,\dots,k.$$ Applying this result, we extend two recent results on linear maps that preserving the rank of special classes of matrices.
Semipositive matrices (matrices that map at least one nonnegative vector to a positive vector) and minimally semipositive matrices (semipositive matrices whose no column-deleted submatrix is semipositive) are well studied in matrix theory. In this short note, we study the structure of linear maps which preserve the set of all semipositive and minimal semipositive matrices.
The objective of this manuscript is to understand the structure of an invertible linear map on the space of real symmetric matrices $\mathcal{S}^n$ that leaves invariant the closed convex cones of copositive and completely positive matrices ($COP_n$ and $CP_n$). A description of an invertible linear map on $\mathcal{S}^2$ such that $L(CP_2) \subset CP_2$ is completely determined.
Given proper cones $K_1$ and $K_2$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\mathbb{R}^m$, respectively, an $m \times n$ matrix $A$ with real entries is said to be semipositive if there exists a $x \in K_1^{\circ}$ such that $Ax \in K_2^{\circ}$, where $K^{\circ}$ denotes the interior of a proper cone $K$. This set is denoted by $S(K_1,K_2)$. We resolve a recent conjecture on the structure of into linear preservers of $S(\mathbb{R}^n_+,\mathbb{R}^m_+)$. We also determine linear preservers of the set $S(K_1,K_2)$ for arbitrary proper cones $K_1$ and $K_2$. Preservers of the subclass of those elements of $S(K_1,K…
Let $V$ be the set of $n\times n$ complex or real general matrices, Hermitian matrices, symmetric matrices, positive definite (resp. semi-definite) matrices, diagonal matrices, or upper triangular matrices. Fix $k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0, 1\}$. We characterize linear maps $ψ:V\to V$ that satisfy $ψ(A^k)=ψ(A)^k$ on an open neighborhood $S$ of $I_n$ in $V$. The $k$-power preservers are necessarily $k$-potent preservers, and the case $k=2$ corresponds to Jordan homomorphisms. Applying the results, we characterize maps $ϕ,ψ:V\to V$ that satisfy "$ \operatorname{tr}(ϕ(A)ψ(B)^k)=\operatorname{tr}…
Let $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$ be the cone of all positive semidefinite $n\times n$ real matrices. Two of the best known partial orders that were mostly studied on subsets of square complex matrices are the Löwner and the minus partial orders. Motivated by applications in statistics we study these partial orders on $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$. We describe the form of all surjective maps on $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$, $n>1$, that preserve the Löwner partial order in both directions. We present an equivalent definition of the minus partial order on $H_{n}^{+}(\mathbb{R})$ and also characterize all surject…
As a continuation of the work on linear maps between operator algebras which preserve certain subsets of operators with finite rank, or corank, here we consider the problem inbetween, that is, we treat the question of preserving operators with infinite rank and infinite corank. Since, as it turns out, in this generality our preservers cannot be written in a nice form what we have got used to when dealing with linear preserver problems, hence we restrict our attention to certain important classes of operators like idempotents, or projections, or partial isometries. We conclude the paper with a …
We prove that the only entrywise transforms of rectangular matrices which preserve total positivity or total non-negativity are either constant or linear. This follows from an extended classification of preservers of these two properties for matrices of fixed dimension. We also prove that the same assertions hold upon working only with symmetric matrices; for total-positivity preservers our proofs proceed through solving two totally positive completion problems.
Denote by $M_n$ the set of $n\times n$ complex matrices. Let $f: M_n \rightarrow [0,\infty)$ be a continuous map such that $f(μUAU^*)= f(A)$ for any complex unit $μ$, $A \in M_n$ and unitary $U \in M_n$, $f(X)=0$ if and only if $X=0$ and the induced map $t \mapsto f(tX)$ is monotonic increasing on $[0,\infty)$ for any rank 1 nilpotent $X \in M_n$. Characterizations are given for surjective maps $ϕ$ on $M_n$ satisfying $f(AB-BA) = f(ϕ(A)ϕ(B)-ϕ(B)ϕ(A))$. The general theorem are then used to deduce results on special cases when the function is the pseudo spectrum and the pseudo spectral radius, t…
Let $m,n\ge 2$ be positive integers, $M_m$ the set of $m\times m$ complex matrices and $M_n$ the set of $n\times n$ complex matrices. Regard $M_{mn}$ as the tensor space $M_m\otimes M_n$. Suppose $|\cdot|$ is the Ky Fan $k$-norm with $1 \le k \le mn$, or the Schatten $p$-norm with $1 \le p \le \infty$ ($p\ne 2$) on $M_{mn}$. It is shown that a linear map $ϕ: M_{mn} \rightarrow M_{mn}$ satisfying $$|A\otimes B| = |ϕ(A\otimes B)|$$ for all $A \in M_m$ and $B \in M_n$ if and only if there are unitary $U, V \in M_{mn}$ such that $ϕ$ has the form $A\otimes B \mapsto U(φ_1(A) \otimes φ_2(B))V$, wher…
In this paper we investigate the properties of minus partial order in unital rings. We generalize several results well known for matrices and bounded linear operators on Banach spaces. We also study linear maps preserving the minus partial order in unital semisimple Banach algebras with essential socle.
Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra. Let $E$ and $F$ be Hilbert $A$-modules with $E$ being full. Suppose that $θ: E\to F$ is a linear map preserving orthogonality, i.e., $<θ(x), θ(y) > = 0$ whenever $<x, y > = 0$. We show in this article that if, in addition, $A$ has real rank zero, and $θ$ is an $A$-module map (not assumed to be bounded), then there exists a central positive multiplier $u\in M(A)$ such that $<θ(x), θ(y) > = u < x, y>$ ($x,y\in E$). In the case when $A$ is a standard $C^*$-algebra, or when $A$ is a $W^*$-algebra containing no finite type II direct summand, we also obtain the same concl…
In this paper we describe the form of those continuous multiplicative maps on B(H) (H being a separable complex Hilbert space of dimension not less than 3) which preserve the rank, or the corank. Furthermore, we characterize those continuous *-semigroup endomorphisms of B(H) which are spectrum non-increasing.
A classical theorem proved in 1942 by I.J. Schoenberg describes all real-valued functions that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to positive semidefinite matrices of arbitrary size; such functions are necessarily analytic with non-negative Taylor coefficients. Despite the great deal of interest generated by this theorem, a characterization of functions preserving positivity for matrices of fixed dimension is not known. In this paper, we provide a complete description of polynomials of degree $N$ that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to matrices of dimension $N$. This is the …
Let ${\mathcal B}(H)$ denote the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space $H$ with $\dim H\geq 3$, and let $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ be subsets of ${\mathcal B}(H)$ which contain all rank one operators. Suppose $F(\cdot )$ is a unitary invariant norm, the pseudo spectra, the pseudo spectral radius, the $C$-numerical range, or the $C$-numerical radius for some finite rank operator $C$. The structure is determined for surjective maps $Φ:{\mathcal A}\rightarrow \mathcal B$ satisfying $F(A^*B)=F(Φ(A)^*Φ(B))$ for all $A, B \in {\mathcal A}$. To establish the pro…
Let M_{n,m} be the set of all n by m matrices with entries in F, where F is the field of real or complex numbers. A matrix R in M_{n} with the property Re=e, is said to be a g-row stochastic (generalized row stochastic) matrix. Let A,B in M_{n,m}, so B is said to be gw-majorized by A if there exists an n by n g-row stochastic matrix R such that B=RA. In this paper we characterize all linear operators that strongly preserve gw-majorization on M_{n,m} and all linear operators that strongly preserve matrix majorization on M_{n} .
A classical result by Schoenberg (1942) identifies all real-valued functions that preserve positive semidefiniteness (psd) when applied entrywise to matrices of arbitrary dimension. Schoenberg's work has continued to attract significant interest, including renewed recent attention due to applications in high-dimensional statistics. However, despite a great deal of effort in the area, an effective characterization of entrywise functions preserving positivity in a fixed dimension remains elusive to date. As a first step, we characterize new classes of polynomials preserving positivity in fixed d…
Fractional powers and polynomial maps preserving structured totally positive matrices, one-sided Polya frequency functions, or totally positive kernels are treated from a unifying perspective. Besides the stark rigidity of the polynomial transforms, we unveil an ubiquitous separation between discrete and continuous spectra of such inner fractional powers. Classical works of Schoenberg, Karlin, Hirschman, and Widder are completed by our classification. Concepts of probability theory, multivariate statistics, and group representation theory naturally enter into the picture.
In this paper we determine those bijective maps of the set of all positive definite $n\times n$ complex matrices which preserve a given Bregman divergence corresponding to a differentiable convex function that satisfies certain conditions. We cover the cases of the most important Bregman divergences and present the precise structure of the mentioned transformations. Similar results concerning Jensen divergences and their preservers are also given.
The paper is devoted to the problem of classification of extremal positive maps acting between $B(K)$ and $B(H)$ where $K$ and $H$ are Hilbert spaces. It is shown that every positive map with the property that $\rank ϕ(P)\leq 1$ for any one-dimensional projection $P$ is a rank 1 preserver. It allows to characterize all decomposable extremal maps as those which satisfy the above condition. Further, we prove that every extremal positive map which is 2-positive turns out to automatically completely positive. Finally we get the same conclusion for such extremal positive maps that $\rank ϕ(P)\leq 1…
In this paper first we give a partial answer to a question of L. Molnár and W. Timmermann. Namely, we will describe those linear (not necessarily bijective) transformations on the set of self-adjoint matrices which preserve a unitarily invariant norm of the commutator. After that we will characterize those (not necessarily linear or bijective) maps on the set of self-adjoint rank-one projections acting on a two-dimensional complex Hilbert space which leave the latter quantity invariant. Finally, this result will be applied in order to obtain a description of such bijective preservers on the un…
The higher rank numerical ranges of generic matrices are described in terms of the components of their Kippenhahn curves. Cases of tridiagonal (in particular, reciprocal) 2-periodic matrices are treated in more detail.
We completely characterize the higher rank numerical range of the matrices of the form $J_n(α)\oplusβI_m$, where $J_n(α)$ is the $n\times n$ Jordan block with eigenvalue $α$. Our characterization allows us to obtain concrete examples of several extreme properties of higher rank numerical ranges.
We present in this note a correction to Theorem 17 in our earlier paper "Global properties of eigenvalues of parametric rank one perturbations for structured and unstructured matrices" and sharpen the estimates for eigenvalues of parametric rank one perturbations given in that theorem.
The article is devoted to different aspects of the question "What can be done with a matrix by low rank perturbation?" It is proved that one can change a geometrically simple spectrum drastically by a rank 1 permutation, but the situation is quite different if one restricts oneself to normal matrices. Also, the Jordan normal form of a perturbed matrix is considered. It is proved that with respect to rank as a distance all almost unitary matrices are near unitary.
Let $A$ be a fixed complex matrix and let $u,v$ be two vectors. The eigenvalues of matrices $A+τuv^\top $ $(τ\in\mathbb{R})$ form a system of intersecting curves. The dependence of the intersections on the vectors $u,v$ is studied.
A conjecture from a paper by J. Bierkens and A.C.M. Ran concerning the location of eigenvalues of rank one perturbations of singular M-matrices is shown to be false in dimension four and higher, but true for dimension two, as well as for dimension three with an additional condition on the perturbation.
We show that if A_1, A_2, ... , A_n are square matrices, each of them is either unitary or self-adjoint, and they almost commute with respect to the rank metric, then one can find commuting matrices B_1, B_2, ... , B_n that are close to the matrices A_i in the rank metric.
