Inspired by the Odlyzko root discriminant and Golod--Shafarevich $p$-group bounds, Martinet (1978) asked whether an imaginary quadratic number field $K/\mathbb{Q}$ must always have an infinite Hilbert $2$-class field tower when the class group of $K$ has $2$-rank $4$, or equivalently when the discriminant of $K$ has $5$ prime factors. No negative results are known. Benjamin (2001, 2002) and Sueyoshi (2004, 2009, 2010) systematically established infinite $2$-towers for many $K$ in question, by casework on the associated Rédei matrices. Others, notably Mouhib (2010), have also made progress, but still many cases remain open, especially when the the class group of $K$ has small $4$-rank.
Recently, Benjamin (2015) made partial progress on several of these open matrices when the class group of $K$ has $4$-rank $1$ or $2$. In this paper, we partially address many open cases when the $4$-rank is $0$ or $2$, affirmatively answering some questions of Benjamin. We then investigate barriers to our methods and ask an extension question (of independent interest) in this direction. Finally, we suggest places where speculative refinements of Golod--Shafarevich or group classification methods might overcome the `near miss' inadequacies in current methods.
Let $d$ be a positive square-free integer. In this paper we shall investigate the structure of the $2$-class group of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of the imaginary biquadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d},\sqrt{-1})$. Furthermore, we deduce the structure of the $2$-class group of cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$.
We formulate and for the most part prove a conjecture in the style of Mazur-Greenberg for the nonvanishing of central values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions attached to elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields. This in particular generalizes the theorem of Rohrlich on $L$-functions of elliptic curves in cyclotomic towers to the setting of abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, corresponding to families of degree-four $L$-functions given by $\operatorname{GL}(2)\times\operatorname{GL}(2)$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions. It also generalizes the theorems of Roh…
Cohen and Lenstra have given a heuristic which, for a fixed odd prime $p$, leads to many interesting predictions about the distribution of $p$-class groups of imaginary quadratic fields. We extend the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic to a non-abelian setting by considering, for each imaginary quadratic field $K$, the Galois group of the $p$-class tower of $K$, i.e. $G_K:=\mathrm{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$ where $K_\infty$ is the maximal unramified $p$-extension of $K$. By class field theory, the maximal abelian quotient of $G_K$ is isomorphic to the $p$-class group of $K$. For integers $c\geq 1$, we give a heur…
For a totally real number field $F$ and a nonarchimedean prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ lying above a prime number $p$ we introduce certain sheaf cohomology groups that intertwine the $\mathfrak{p}^{\infty}$-tower of a quaternionic Hilbert modular variety associated to a quaternion algebra $D$ over $F$ that is split at $\mathfrak{p}$ and a $p$-adically admissible representation of $\mbox{PGL}_2(F_{\mathfrak{p}})$. Applied to infinitesimal $p$-adic deformations of the local factor at $\mathfrak{p}$ of a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $D^*(\mathbb{A})$ this yields a natural construction…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. For a number field $K$, we let $K_\infty$ be the maximal unramified pro-$p$ extension of $K$; we call the group $\mathrm{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$ the $p$-class tower group of $K$. In a previous work, as a non-abelian generalization of the work of Cohen and Lenstra on ideal class groups, we studied how likely it is that a given finite $p$-group occurs as the $p$-class tower group of an imaginary quadratic field. Here we do the same for an arbitrary real quadratic field $K$ as base. As before, the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(K/\mathbb{Q})$ on the $p$-class tower group of $K$ plays …
For every prime number p, we show the existence of a solvable number field L ramified only at {p and infinity whose p-Hilbert Class field tower is infinite.
Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p=2$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Let $\varepsilon_p$ denote the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ and let $a$ be a positive square-free integer. The main aim of this paper is to determine explicitly the Hilbert genus field of the imaginary cyclic quartic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-a\varepsilon_p\sqrt{p}})$.
It is shown that the quartic Fermat equation $x^4 +y^4=1$ has nontrivial integral solutions in the Hilbert class field $Σ$ of any quadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ whose discriminant satisfies $-d \equiv 1$ (mod 8). A corollary is that the quartic Fermat equation has no nontrivial solution in $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$, for $p$ $( > 7)$ a prime congruent to $7$ (mod 8), but does have a nontrivial solution in the odd degree extension $Σ$ of $K$. These solutions arise from explicit formulas for the points of order 4 on elliptic curves in Tate normal form. The solutions are studied in deta…
For each odd prime p>=5, there exist finite p-groups G with derived quotient G/D(G)=C(p)xC(p) and nearly constant transfer kernel type k(G)=(1,2,...,2) having two fixed points. It is proved that, for p=7, this type k(G) with the simplest possible case of logarithmic abelian quotient invariants t(G)=(11111,111,21,21,21,21,21,21) of the eight maximal subgroups is realized by exactly 98 non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of order 7^11 with fixed derived length dl(S)=3 and metabelianizations S/D(D(S)) of order 7^7. For p=5, the type k(G) with t(G)=(2111,111,21,21,21,21) leads to infinitely many n…
The isomorphism type of the Galois group of the 2-class field tower of quadratic number fields having a 2-class group with abelian type invariants (4,4) is determined by means of information on the transfer of 2-classes to unramified abelian 2-extensions, collected in the Artin pattern. In recent investigations by Benjamin and Snyder, the length of the tower of such fields has turned out to be dependent on the rank of the 2-class group of the first Hilbert 2-class field. Significant progress is achieved by extending the pool of possible metabelian 2-groups of the second Hilbert 2-class field f…
Given a fixed prime number \(p\), the multiplet of abelian type invariants of the \(p\)-class groups of all unramified cyclic degree \(p\) extensions of a number field \(K\) is called its IPAD (index-\(p\) abelianization data). These invariants have proved to be a valuable information for determining the Galois group \(G_p^2\) of the second Hilbert \(p\)-class field and the \(p\)-capitulation type \(\varkappa\) of \(K\). For \(p=3\) and a number field \(K\) with elementary \(p\)-class group of rank two, all possible IPADs are given in the complete form of several infinite sequences. Iterated I…
For a fixed prime p, the p-class tower F(p,infinity,K) of a number field K is considered to be known if a pro-p presentation of the Galois group H = Gal( F(p,infinity,K)/K ) is given. In the last few years, it turned out that the Artin pattern AP(K) = (tau(K),kappa(K)) consisting of targets tau(K) = (Cl(p,L)) and kernels kappa(K) = (ker(J(L/K)) of class extensions J(L/K): Cl(p,K) --> Cl(p,L) to unramified abelian subfields L/K of the Hilbert p-class field F(p,1,K) only suffices for determining the two-stage approximation G = H/H" of H. Additional techniques had to be developed for identifying …
Let zeta5 be a primitive fifth root of unity and d<>1 be a quadratic fundamental discriminant not divisible by 5. For the 5-dual cyclic quartic field M=Q((zeta5-zeta5^-1)*d^1/2) of the quadratic fields k1=Q(d^1/2) and k2=Q((5*d)^1/2) in the sense of the quintic reflection theorem, the possibilities for the isomophism type of the Galois group G(5,2)M=Gal(M(5,2)/M) of the second Hilbert 5-class field M(5,2) of M are investigated, when the 5-class group Cl5(M) is elementary bicyclic of rank two. Usually, the maximal unramified pro-5-extension M(5,infinity) of M coincides with M(5,2) already. The …
Let $K$ be an imaginary biquadratic field and $K_1$, $K_2$ be its imaginary quadratic subfields. For integers $N>0$, $μ\geq 0$ and an odd prime $p$ with $\gcd(N,p)=1$, let $K_{(Np^μ)}$ and $(K_i)_{(Np^μ)}$ for $i=1,2$ be the ray class fields of $K$ and $K_i$, respectively, modulo $Np^μ$. We first present certain class fields $\widetilde{K_{N,p,μ}^{1,2}}$ of $K$, in the sense of Hilbert, which are generated by Siegel-Ramachandra invariants of $(K_i)_{(Np^{μ+1})}$ for $i=1,2$ over $K_{(Np^μ)}$ and show that $K_{(Np^{μ+1})}=\widetilde{K_{N,p,μ}^{1,2}}$ for almost all $μ$.
The rank one Gross conjecture for Deligne-Ribet $p$-adic $L$-functions was solved in works of Darmon-Dasgupta-Pollack and Ventullo by the Eisenstein congruence among Hilbert modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to prove an analogue of the Gross conjecture for the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to imaginary quadratic fields via the congruences between CM forms and non-CM forms. The new ingredient is to apply the $p$-adic Rankin-Selberg method to construct a non-CM Hida family which is congruent to a Hida family of CM forms at the $1+\varepsilon$ specialization.
Let $U/L$ be a finite abelian extension of number fields. We first construct a universal primitive generator of $U$ over $L$ whose relative trace to any intermediate field $F$ becomes a generator of $F$ over $L$, too. We also develop a similar argument in terms of norm. As its examples we investigate towers of ray class fields over imaginary quadratic fields. And, we further present a new method of finding a normal element for the extension $U/L$.
Let p$\ge$2 be a given prime number. We prove, for any number field kappa and any integer e$\ge$1, the p-rank $ε$-conjecture, on the p-class groups Cl\_F, for the family F\_kappa^p^e of towers F/kappa built as successive degree p cyclic extensions (without any other Galois conditions) such that F/kappa be of degree p^e, namely: #(Cl\_F[p])<<\_{kappa,p^e,$ε$}($\sqrt$D\_F)^$ε$, where D\_F is the absolute value of the discriminant (Theorem 3.6) and, more generally, #(Cl\_F[p^r])<<\_{kappa,p^e,$ε$}($\sqrt$D\_F)^$ε$, for any r$\ge$1 fixed. This Note generalizes the case of the family F\_Q^p (Genus …
By the construction of suitable non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of type (9,3) with log order lo(S) = 21 and nilpotency class cl(S) = 9, evidence is provided of a new class of imaginary quadratic fields K with 3-class group Cl(3,K) ~ C(9) * C(3) and punctured principalization type kappa ~ (1,4,4;4) whose 3-class field tower consists of precisely three stages. In contrast, previous examples of three-stage towers were associated with kappa in { (1,1,2;2), (1,1,2;3), (1,1,4;2), (1,2,3;1) }, lo(S) = 9 and cl(S) = 5.
Let $K$ be a quartic CM field, that is, a totally imaginary quadratic extension of a real quadratic number field. In a 1962 article titled On the classfields obtained by complex multiplication of abelian varieties, Shimura considered a particular family $\{F_K(m) : m \in \mathbb{Z} >0 \}$ of abelian extensions of $K$, and showed that the Hilbert class field $H_K$ of $K$ is contained in $F_K(m)$ for some positive integer m. We make this m explicit. We then give an algorithm that computes a set of defining polynomials for the Hilbert class field using the field $F_K(m)$. Our proof-of-concept imp…
We establish a duality result proving the `functional equation' of the characteristic ideal of the Selmer group associated to a nearly ordinary Hilbert modular form over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ extension of a totally real number field. Further, we use this result to establish a duality or algebraic `functional equation' for the `big' Selmer groups associated to the corresponding nearly ordinary Hida deformation. The multivariable cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for nearly ordinary Hida family of Hilbert modular forms is not established yet and this can be thought of as an evidence t…
We introduce a new fundamental domain for the cusp stabilizer of a Hilbert modular group over a real quadratic field K=Q(sqrt n). This is constructed as the union of Dirichlet domains for the maximal unipotent group, over the leaves in a foliation of the biplane. The region is the Cartesian product of the positive reals with a 3-dimensional tower formed by deformations of lattices in the ring of integers of K, and makes explicit the cusp cross section's Sol 3-manifold structure and Anosov diffeomorphism. We include computer generated images and data illustrating various examples.
The Hilbert class polynomial $H_{\mathcal{O}}(x)\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ attached to an order $\mathcal{O}$ in an imaginary quadratic field $K$ is the monic polynomial whose roots are precisely the distinct $j$-invariants of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{C}$ with complex multiplication by $\mathcal{O}$. Let $p$ be a prime inert in $K$ and strictly greater than $|\operatorname{disc}(\mathcal{O})|$. We show that the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-roots of $H_\mathcal{O}(x)\!\! \pmod{p}$ is either zero or $|\operatorname{Pic}(\mathcal{O})[2]|$ by exhibiting a free and transitive action of $\operatorname{Pic}…
A new proof, depending only on genus theory, is given of a theorem of Stankewicz, which characterizes the primes $p$ for which the class equation $H_D(X)$ of the maximal order of the imaginary quadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ has a linear factor (mod $p$). This yields a prime decomposition law for the primes $p$ with $p \nmid D$ in the real subfield of the Hilbert class field of $K$.
Let $H_D(T)$ denote the Hilbert class polynomial of the imaginary quadratic order of discriminant $D$. We study the rate of growth of the greatest common divisor of $H_D(a)$ and $H_D(b)$ as $|D| \to \infty$ for $a$ and $b$ belonging to various Dedekind domains. We also study the modular support problem: if for all but finitely many $D$ every prime ideal dividing $H_D(a)$ also divides $H_D(b)$, what can we say about $a$ and $b$? If we replace $H_D(T)$ by $T^n-1$ and the Dedekind domain is a ring of $S$-integers in some number field, then these are classical questions that have been investigated…
The Hilbert class polynomial has as roots the j-invariants of elliptic curves whose endomorphism ring is a given imaginary quadratic order. It can be used to compute elliptic curves over finite fields with a prescribed number of points. Since its coefficients are typically rather large, there has been continued interest in finding alternative modular functions whose corresponding class polynomials are smaller. Best known are Weber's functions, that reduce the size by a factor of 72 for a positive density subset of imaginary quadratic discriminants. On the other hand, Bröker and Stevenhagen sho…
