We realized a quantum geometric "charge" pump for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the lowest Bloch band of a novel bipartite magnetic lattice. Topological charge pumps in filled bands yield quantized pumping set by the global -- topological -- properties of the bands. In contrast, our geometric charge pump for a BEC occupying just a single crystal momentum state exhibits non-quantized charge pumping set by local -- geometrical -- properties of the band structure. Like topological charge pumps, for each pump cycle we observed an overall displacement (here, not quantized) and a temporal modulation of the atomic wavepacket's position in each unit cell, i.e., the polarization.
Recently, it was shown that giant vortices with arbitrarily large quantum numbers can possibly be created in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates by cyclically pumping vorticity into the condensate. However, multiply quantized vortices are typically dynamically unstable in harmonically trapped nonrotated condensates, which poses a serious challenge to the vortex pump procedure. In this theoretical study, we investigate how the giant vortices can be stabilized by the application of a Gaussian potential peak along the vortex core. We find that achieving dynamical stability is feasible up to high qua…
We clarify the condition for the occurrence of magnon Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in spin pumping systems without using external pumping magnetic fields. The Goldstone model is generalized and the stability of the vacuum is closely investigated. By applying the generalized Goldstone model to spin pumping systems, the condition for the experimental realization of the stable magnon BEC in spin pumping systems is theoretically proposed.

We show that topological vortex pumping can be implemented for a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a magnetic time-averaged orbiting potential trap with axial optical confinement. Contrary to earlier proposals for the vortex pump, we do not employ an additional optical potential to trap the condensate in the radial direction, but instead, the radial confinement is provided by the magnetic field throughout the pumping cycle. By performing numerical simulations based on the spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we find that several pumping cycles can be carried out to produce a highly char…
We theoretically investigate spin transfer between a system of quasiequilibrated Bose-Einstein condensed magnons in an insulator in direct contact with a conductor. While charge transfer is prohibited across the interface, spin transport arises from the exchange coupling between insulator and conductor spins. In normal insulator phase, spin transport is governed solely by the presence of thermal and spin-diffusive gradients; the presence of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), meanwhile, gives rise to a temperature-independent condensate spin current. Depending on the thermodynamic bias of the sy…
We explore the formation and collective modes of Bose-Einstein condensate of Dirac magnons (Dirac BEC). While we focus on two-dimensional Dirac magnons, an employed approach is general and could be used to describe Bose-Einstein condensates with linear quasiparticle spectrum in various systems. By using a phenomenological multicomponent model of pumped boson population together with bosons residing at Dirac nodes, the formation and time evolution of condensates of Dirac bosons is investigated. The condensate coherence and its multicomponent nature are manifested in the Rabi oscillations whose …
Light thermalised at room temperature in an optically pumped, dye-filled microcavity resembles a model system of non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensation in the presence of dissipation. We have experimentally investigated some of the steady-state properties of this unusual state of light and found features which do not match the available theoretical descriptions. We have seen that the critical pump power for condensation depends on the pump beam geometry, being lower for smaller pump beams. Far below threshold, both intracavity photon number and thermalised photon cloud size depend on pump …

Topological phase imprinting is a well-established technique for deterministic vortex creation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali metal atoms. It was recently shown that counter-diabatic quantum control may accelerate vortex creation in comparison to the standard adiabatic protocol and suppress the atom loss due to nonadiabatic transitions. Here we apply this technique, assisted by an optical plug, for vortex pumping to theoretically show that sequential phase imprinting up to 20 cycles generates a vortex with a very large winding number. Our method significantly increases the fidel…

We derive a theory for Bose condensation in nonequilibrium steady states of bosonic quantum gases that are coupled both to a thermal heat bath and to a pumped reservoir (or gain medium), while suffering from loss. Such a scenario describes photonic many-body systems such as exciton-polariton gases. Our analysis is based on a set of kinetic equations for a gas of noninteracting bosons. By identifying a dimensionless scaling parameter controlling the boson density, we derive a sharp criterion for which system states become selected to host a macroscopic occupation. We show that with increasing p…
We consider Bose-Einstein condensation of photons in an optical cavity filled with dye molecules that are excited by laser light. By using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism we derive a Langevin field equation that describes the dynamics of the photon gas, and in particular its equilibrium properties and relaxation towards equilibrium. Furthermore we show that the finite lifetime effects of the photons are captured in a single dimensionless damping parameter, that depends on the power of the external laser pumping the dye. Finally, as applications of our theory we determine spectral functions and…
The emergence of a non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein-like condensation of magnons in rf-pumped magnetic thin films has recently been experimentally observed. We present here a complete theoretical description of the non-equilibrium processes involved. It it demonstrated that the phenomenon is another example of the presence of a Bose-Einstein-like condensation in non-equilibrium many-boson systems embedded in a thermal bath, better referred-to as Fröhlich-Bose-Einstein condensation. The complex behavior emerges after a threshold of the exciting intensity is attained. It is inhibited at higher inte…
Solid state quantum condensates can differ from other condensates, such as Helium, ultracold atomic gases, and superconductors, in that the condensing quasiparticles have relatively short lifetimes, and so, as for lasers, external pumping is required to maintain a steady state. In this chapter we present a non-equilibrium path integral approach to condensation in a dissipative environment and apply it to microcavity polaritons, driven out of equilibrium by coupling to multiple baths, describing pumping and decay. Using this, we discuss the relation between non-equilibrium polariton condensatio…
Correlations of luminescence intensity have been studied under Bose-Einstein condensation of dipolar excitons in the temperature range of 0.45-4.2 K. Photoexcited dipolar excitons were collected in a lateral trap in GaAs/AlGaAs Schottky-diode heterostructure with single wide (25 nm) quantum well under applied electric bias. Two-photon correlations were measured with the use of a classical Hanbury Brown - Twiss intensity interferometer (time resolution ~0.4 ns). Photon "bunching" has been observed near the Bose condensation threshold of dipolar excitons determined by the appearance of a narrow …
Improving the measurement precision of temperature is very important and challenging, especially in the low temperature range. Based on the existence of invariant subspaces during the polariton thermalization, we propose a new way to enhance the measurement precision of the low temperature and obtain Landau bound to avoid that the measurement uncertainty of the temperature diverges as the temperature approaches zero. The measurement precision of the low temperature increases significantly with the number of polariton states. In order to resist the dissipation, the incoherent pumping is necessa…
We present a method for producing three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates using only laser cooling. The phase transition to condensation is crossed with $2.5 {\times} 10^{4}$ $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms at a temperature of $T_{\mathrm{c}} = 0.6\ μ\mathrm{K}$ after 1.4 s of cooling. Atoms are trapped in a crossed optical dipole trap and cooled using Raman cooling with far-off-resonant optical pumping light to reduce atom loss and heating. The achieved temperatures are well below the effective recoil temperature. We find that during the final cooling stage at atomic densities above $10^{14}\ \m…
The Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons created by a strong pumping in ferromagnetic thin films of yttrium iron garnet used as systems of finite size is considered analytically. Such a peculiarity, typical for this magnetic material, as the presence of a minimum in the spectrum of spin waves at a finite value of the wave vector is taken into account. The definition of hightemperature BEC is introduced and its characteristics are discussed. A role of boundary conditions for spin variables is analyzed, and it is shown that in the case of free spins on the boundary the magnon lattice can …
In this paper, a non-Markovian Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed to describe the formation of a condensate in an exciton-polariton system under incoherent pumping. By introducing spatially delta-correlated noise terms, we observe a transition from a spatially ordered phase to a disordered one as the temperature increases. In course of this process, the population of the condensate is significantly reduced. Irregularly located separate dense spots of condensate above the transition temperature are revealed. Using the Gabor transform, it is shown that, with increasing temperature, the conden…
Adopting a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii description for a spinor polariton Bose-Einstein condensates under non-resonant pumping, we investigate the static and dynamical properties of dark-bright solitons. We derive analytically the equation of motion for the center of mass of the dark-bright soliton center, using the Hamiltonian approach. The resulting equation captures how the combination of the open-dissipative character and the spin degrees of freedom of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of a dark-bright soliton, i.e. the dark-bright soliton relaxes by blending with…
We consider dynamics of a quantum nonlinear oscillator subjected to non-Markovian pumping. Models of this kind can describe formation of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates in course of stimulated scattering and relaxation of reservoir excitons. Using the Markovian embedding techniques, we obtain stochastic differential equations of motion with an additional degree of freedom corresponding to dynamical memory. It is shown that the oscillator asymptotically tends to the intrinsically non-Markovian stable fixed point corresponding to constant product of oscillator amplitude and modulo of…
We examine the multistability associated with miscibility-immiscibility conditions for a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to the light field in an optical cavity. For a strongly immiscible condition, the system exhibits a variety of density structures, including separated state, stripe state, and their coexistence. The multistability arises from these spatial structures of the two-component condensate, which significantly alter the hysteresis curve with respect to the intensity of cavity pumping. We present a variational approach to confirm our numerical results.
We report evidence for the existence of a supercurrent of magnons in a magnon Bose-Einstein condensate prepared in a room temperature yttrium-iron-garnet magnetic film and subject to a thermal gradient. The magnon condensate is formed in a parametrically populated magnon gas, and its temporal evolution is studied by time-, frequency- and wavector-resolved Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. It has been found that local heating in the focal point of a probing laser beam enhances the temporal decrease in the density of the freely evolving magnon condensate after the termination of the pumpi…
The phenomenon of superfluidity in open Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) is analysed numerically and analytically. It is found that a superfluid phase is feasible even above the speed of sound, when forces due to inhomogeneous non-equilibrium processes oppose the contributions of homogeneous processes. Furthermore a regime of accelerating impurities can be observed for particular pumping/decay strategies. All findings are derived within the complex Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory with creation and annihilation terms. Utilising this framework the effective force acting on an impurity as it moves wi…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics of two dark solitons in a polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation. In particular, the analytical expression of the effective potential between two dark solitons is given. The resulting equation of motion captures how the open-dissipative character of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of dynamics of two-dark soliton, i.e., two-dark soliton relax by blending with the background at a finite time. We further simulate the relative motion of …
We present a novel route to Bose-Einstein condensation devised for two-electron atoms, which do not admit practicable cooling techniques based upon narrow intercombination lines. A dipole trap for $^{40}$Ca atoms in the singlet ground state is loaded from a moderately cold source of metastable triplet atoms via spatially and energetically selective optical pumping permitting four orders of magnitude increase of the phase space density. Further cooling to quantum degeneracy is achieved by forced evaporation optimized to minimize three-body losses. In a combined loading and evaporation cycle of …
We investigate the switching of the coherent emission mode of a bimodal microcavity device, occurring when the pump power is varied. We compare experimental data to theoretical results and identify the underlying mechanism to be based on the competition between the effective gain on the one hand and the intermode kinetics on the other. When the pumping is ramped up, above a threshold the mode with the largest effective gain starts to emit coherent light, corresponding to lasing. In contrast, in the limit of strong pumping it is the intermode kinetics that determines which mode acquires a large…
The theoretical description of non-equilibrium Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) is one of the main challenges in modern statistical physics and kinetics. The non-equilibrium nature of BEC makes it impossible to employ the well-established formalism of statistical mechanics. We develop a framework for the analytical description of a non-equilibrium phase transition to BEC that, in contrast to previously developed approaches, takes into account the infinite number of continuously distributed states. We consider the limit of fast thermalization and obtain an analytical expression for the full dens…

The role of geometrical frustration in strongly interacting bosonic systems is studied with a combined numerical and analytical approach. We demonstrate the existence of a novel quantum phase featuring both Bose-Einstein condensation and spin-glass behaviour. The differences between such a phase and the otherwise insulating "Bose glasses" are elucidated.
The Bose-stimulated self-organization of a quasi-two dimensional non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate in an in-plane potential is proposed. We obtained the solution of the nonlinear, driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an external asymmetric parabolic potential within the method of the spectral expansion. We found that, in sharp contrast to previous observations, the condensate can spontaneously acquire a soliton-like shape for spatially homogenous pumping. This condensate soliton performs oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap and, also, …
We develop a multimode model that describes the dynamics on a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate confined by a ring-shaped optical lattice with large filling numbers. The parameters of the model are obtained as a function of the rotation frequency using full 3D Gross-Pitaevskii simulations. From such numerical calculations, we extract the velocity field induced at each site and analyze the relation and the differences between the phase of the hopping parameter of our model and the Peierls phase. To this end, a detailed discussion of such phases is presented in geometrical terms which takes into…
In this paper, we investigate the effect of atomic collisions on the phase transition form the normal to the superradiant phase in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an optical cavity. Specifically, we show that driving the atoms from the side of the cavity leads to the excitation of modes in the edges of the first Brillouin zone of every energy band, which results in the two-mode approximation of the BEC matter field in the limit of weak coupling regime. The nonlinear effect of atom-atom interaction shifts the threshold of the quantum phase transition of the BEC a…
We present an optimized strategy for the production of tightly confined Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of 87Rb in a crossed dipole trap with direct loading from a magneto-optical trap. The dipole trap is created with light of a multifrequency fiber laser with a center wavelength of 1070nm. Evaporative cooling is performed by ramping down the laser power only. A comparison of the resulting atom number in an almost pure BEC to the initial atom number and the value for the gain in phase space density per atom lost confirm that this straightforward strategy is very efficient. We observe that the …
The peculiarities in the Bose-Einstein condensation of particles and quasiparticles are discussed. The difference between the condensation of conserved and unconserved particles is analyzed. A classification of quasiparticles is given. The emphasis is made on the ability of particles and quasiparticles to condense. Illustrations include: general Bose-condensed atomic systems, such as ensembles of trapped atoms, Bose gases with conserved and unconserved number of atoms, vibrating atoms in double-well lattices, Holstein-Primakoff magnons, Schwinger bosons, slave bosons, and the condensation of s…
We study driven-dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-mode Josephson system, such as a double-well potential, with asymmetrical pumping. We investigate nonlinear effects on the condensate populations and mode transitions. The generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations are modified in order to treat pumping of only a single mode. We characterize the steady-state solutions in such a system as well as criteria for potential trapping of a condensate mode. There are many possible steady-states, with different density and/or phase profiles. Transitions between different condensate modes can be …
The synchronization of coherent states of light has long been an important subject of basic research and technology. Recently, a new concept for analog computers has emerged where this synchronization process can be exploited to solve computationally hard problems - potentially faster and more energy-efficient than what can be achieved with conventional computer technology today. The unit cell of such systems consists of two coherent centers that are coupled to one another in a controlled manner. Here, we experimentally characterize and analyze the synchronization process of two photon Bose-Ei…
Long-lived coherent spin precession of 3He-B at low temperatures around 0.2 Tc is a manifestation of Bose-Einstein condensation of spin-wave excitations or magnons in a magnetic trap which is formed by the order-parameter texture and can be manipulated experimentally. When the number of magnons increases, the orbital texture reorients under the influence of the spin-orbit interaction and the profile of the trap gradually changes from harmonic to a square well, with walls almost impenetrable to magnons. This is the first experimental example of Bose condensation in a box. By selective rf pumpin…
We study a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at low energy limit and show that their collective dynamics exhibit interesting topological behavior. The system undergoes dynamical topological phase transition at its global periods if its dispersion relation is strictly linear and when all of the bosonic mode are properly displaced from their equilibrium position. We corroborate the occurrence of dynamical phase transition by calculating Fisher zeros of the Loschmidt amplitude for sudden quench dynamics. A connection is established between the order of nonanalycity in the accumulated geometric phase…
We study a system represented by a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a cavity field in presence of a strong off-resonant pumping laser. This system can be described by a three-mode Gaussian state, where two are the atomic modes corresponding to atoms populating upper and lower momentum sidebands and the third mode describes the scattered cavity field light. We show that, as a consequence of the collective atomic recoil instability, these modes possess a genuine tripartite entanglement that increases unboundedly with the evolution time and is larger than the bipartite entanglement in an…
We introduce a system of phenomenological equations for Bose-Einstein condensates of magnons in the one-dimensional setting. The nonlinearly coupled equations, written for amplitudes of the right-and left-traveling waves, combine basic features of the Gross-Pitaevskii and complex Ginzburg-Landau models. They include localized source terms, to represent the microwave magnon-pumping field. With the source represented by the $δ$-functions, we find analytical solutions for symmetric localized states of the magnon condensates. We also predict the existence of asymmetric states with unequal amplitud…
Solid state quantum condensates often differ from previous examples of condensates (such as Helium, ultra-cold atomic gases, and superconductors) in that the quasiparticles condensing have relatively short lifetimes, and so as for lasers, external pumping is required to maintain a steady state. On the other hand, compared to lasers, the quasiparticles are generally more strongly interacting, and therefore better able to thermalise. This leads to questions of how to describe such non-equilibrium condensates, and their relation to equilibrium condensates and lasers. This chapter discusses in det…
We construct a theory for Bose-Einstein condensation of light in nano-fabricated semiconductor microcavities. We model the semiconductor by one conduction and one valence band which consist of electrons and holes that interact via a Coulomb interaction. Moreover, we incorporate screening effects by using a contact interaction with the scattering length for a Yukawa potential and describe in this manner the crossover from exciton gas to electron-hole plasma as we increase the excitation level of the semiconductor. We then show that the dynamics of the light in the microcavities is damped due to…
We demonstrate the fast accumulation of Cr atoms in a conservative potential from a magnetically guided atomic beam. Without laser cooling on a cycling transition, a single dissipative step realized by optical pumping allows to load atoms at a rate of 2*10^7 1/s in the trap. Within less than 100 ms we reach the collisionally dense regime, from which we directly produce a Bose-Einstein condensate with subsequent evaporative cooling. This constitutes a new approach to degeneracy where, provided a slow beam of particles can be produced by some means, Bose-Einstein condensation can be reached for …
An ideal equilibrium Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) is usually considered in the grand canonical ($μV T$) ensemble, which implies the presence of the chemical equilibrium with the environment. However, in most experimental scenarios, the total amount of particles in BEC is determined either by the initial conditions or by the balance between dissipation and pumping. As a result, BEC may possess the thermal equilibrium but almost never the chemical equilibrium. In addition, many experimentally achievable BECs are non-ideal due to interaction between particles. In the recent work [10.1103/PhysR…
Geometrical properties of energy bands underlie fascinating phenomena in a wide-range of systems, including solid-state materials, ultracold gases and photonics. Most famously, local geometrical characteristics like the Berry curvature can be related to global topological invariants such as those classifying quantum Hall states or topological insulators. Regardless of the band topology, however, any non-zero Berry curvature can have important consequences, such as in the semi-classical evolution of a wave packet. Here, we experimentally demonstrate for the first time that wave packet dynamics …
The local induction equation, approximately describing dynamics of a quantized vortex filament in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime on a spatially nonuniform density background $ρ({\bf r})$ and taking dimensionless form ${\mathbf R}_t=\varkappa {\mathbf b}+[\nabla\lnρ({\mathbf R})\times {\boldsymbol τ}]$ (where $\varkappa$ is a local curvature of the filament, ${\mathbf b}$ is the unit binormal vector, and ${\boldsymbol τ}$ is the unit tangent vector), is shown to admit a finite-dimensional reduction if the density profile is an isotropic Gaussian, $ρ\propto\exp(-|{…
Recent realization of Bose-Einstein condensation of light in 2D provides a new platform for studying novel phases and phase transitions. The combination of low effective mass of the confined light and the presence of the dye molecules with randomly oriented directions of the dipolar transition engages a competition between disorder and the tendency to forming algebraic off-diagonal order. The phase diagram of possible phases is constructed at the mean field level. One of the phases is the condensate of photon pairs induced solely by the orientational disorder. Such a {\it geometrical } mechani…
We derive a theoretical model which describes Bose-Einstein condensation in an open driven-dissipative system. It includes external pumping of a thermal reservoir, finite life time of the condensed particles and energy relaxation. The coupling between the reservoir and the condensate is described with semi-classical Boltzmann rates. This results in a dissipative term in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate, which is proportional to the energy of the elementary excitations of the system. We analyse the main properties of a condensate described by this hybrid Boltzmann Gross-Pitaevsk…
