Adopting a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii description for a spinor polariton Bose-Einstein condensates under non-resonant pumping, we investigate the static and dynamical properties of dark-bright solitons. We derive analytically the equation of motion for the center of mass of the dark-bright soliton center, using the Hamiltonian approach. The resulting equation captures how the combination of the open-dissipative character and the spin degrees of freedom of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of a dark-bright soliton, i.e. the dark-bright soliton relaxes by blending with the background at a finite time. In this case, we also determine the life time of the DB soliton. Further numerical solutions of the modified dissipative two-component Gross-Pitaevskii equations are in excellent agreement with the analytical results. In presence of the Langevin noise, we demonstrate that the DB solitons can still propagate for a long time, which is sufficient for their experimental observations within current facilities.
We investigate the stability and coherence properties of one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping. We model the condensate dynamics using the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of spatially homogeneous pumping, we find that the instability of the steady state leads to significant eduction of the coherence length. We consider two effects that can lead to the stabilization of the steady state, i.e. the polariton energy relaxation and the influence of an inhomogeneous pumping profile. We find that, while the former has little effect on the stabi…
We theoretically investigate a spinor polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a spin-unpolarized reservoir. We find the homogeneous polariton condensate can transit from the spin-unpolarized phase, where it is linearly polarized, to the spin-polarized phase, where it is elliptically polarized, depending on the cross-spin versus same-spin interactions and the linear polarization splitting. In both phases, we study elementary excitations using Bogoliubov approach, in a regime where the decay rate of to…
We present a theoretical scheme for multistability in planar microcavity exciton-polariton condensates under nonresonant driving. Using an excitation profile resulting in a spatially patterned condensate, we observe organized phase locking which can abruptly reorganize as a result of pump induced instability made possible by nonlinear interactions. For $π/2$ symmetric systems this reorganization can be regarded as a parity transition and is found to be a fingerprint of multistable regimes existing over a finite range of excitation strengths. The natural degeneracy of the planar equations of mo…
A method of determining the temperature of the nonradiative reservoir in a microcavity exciton-polariton system is developed. A general relation for the homogeneous polariton linewidth is theoretically derived and experimentally used in the method. In experiments with a GaAs microcavity under nonresonant pulsed excitation, the reservoir temperature dynamics is extracted from the polariton linewidth. Within the first nanosecond the reservoir temperature greatly exceeds the lattice temperature and determines the dynamics of the major processes in the system. It is shown that, for nonresonant pul…
We investigate the multistability of exciton-polariton condensates excited by a nonresonant pump. An increase in pumping power moves the system away from non-Hermitian spectral degeneracy towards spectrum splitting through an exceptional point, which induces a transition from monostability to multistability. In the region of multistability, the system contains one steady and two metastable states. The analyses of stability show that metastable states maintain a finite lifetime and eventually evolve to steady states. A steady state with multi-peak soliton different from general single-peak soli…
Exciton-polariton condensate in semiconductor microcavities constitute a novel kind of non-equilibrium superfluid. In a recent experiment [P. Stepanov, {\it et. al.,} Nat. Commun. {\bf 10}, 1038 (2019)], the dispersion relation of collective excitations in a polariton condensate under the resonant pumping has been investigated with the emphasis on the role of reservoir of long-lived excitons in determining the superfluidity. Inspired by such an experimental advance, we study the superfluidity of a exciton-polaritonn condensate under non-resonant pumping by calculating the drag force exerted on…
We show that the simultaneous driving of a polariton condensate with both nonresonant and n^th order resonant pump frequencies allows for a generic mechanism of breather formation; from this, we construct for the second-order resonance a family of exotic breathers with nontrivial discrete order of rotational symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate the spontaneous emergence of both crystalline and glassy orderings of lattices of polygonal breathers, depending on the degree of polygonal excitations at the lattice sites.
We propose a method to enhance the spatial coupling between ballistic exciton-polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity based on available spatial light modulator technologies. Our method, verified by numerically solving a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii model, exploits the strong nonequilibrium nature of exciton-polariton condensation driven by localized nonresonant optical excitation. Tailoring the excitation beam profile from a Gaussian into a polygonal shape results in refracted and focused radial streams of outflowing polaritons from the excited condensate which can be directed to…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics of two dark solitons in a polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation. In particular, the analytical expression of the effective potential between two dark solitons is given. The resulting equation of motion captures how the open-dissipative character of a polariton Bose-Einstein condensate affects the properties of dynamics of two-dark soliton, i.e., two-dark soliton relax by blending with the background at a finite time. We further simulate the relative motion of …
We study the spontaneous formation of exciton polariton vortices in an all-optical non-resonantly excited annular trap, which is formed by ring-shaped subpicosecond laser pulses. Since the light emitted by these vortices carries orbital angular momentum (OAM) corresponding to their topological charge, we apply a dedicated OAM spectroscopy technique to detect the OAM of the measurement signal with picosecond time resolution. This allows us to identify the formation of OAM modes and investigate the dynamics of the vortex formation process. We also study the power dependence of this process and h…
We predict the existence of a self-localized solution in a nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensate. The solution has a shape resembling the well-known hyperbolic tangent profile of the dark soliton, but exhibits several distinct features. We find that it performs small oscillations, which are transformed into 'soliton explosions' at lower pumping intensities. Moreover, after hundreds or thousands of picoseconds of apparently stable evolution the soliton decays abruptly, which is explained by the acceleration instability found previously in the Bekki-Nozaki hole solutions of the compl…
We study analytically and numerically the condensation of a driven-dissipative exciton-polariton system using symmetric nonresonant pumping geometries. We show that the lowest condensation threshold solution carries a definite parity as a consequence of the symmetric excitation profile. At higher pump intensities competition between the two parities can result in critical quenching of one and saturation of the other. Using long pump channels, we show that the competition of the condensate parities gives rise to a different type of topologically stable defect propagating indefinitely along the …
Self-rotation occurs in an exciton-polariton condensate in a two-dimensional semiconductor microcavity pumped by a nonresonant Gaussian laser beam. A wave packet of the condensate spontaneously rotates around the center of the pumped region at a constant frequency breaking the rotation symmetry of the system. When two self-rotating condensates are created with an appropriate distance, synchronization occurs between the dynamics of the self-rotating condensates.
We demonstrate the possibility to build stable Josephson $π$-junction stripes with exciton-polariton condensates. The stability of the $π$-junction between arbitrary long polariton stripes is achieved at low pumping by balancing the snaking instability with counter-propagating flows towards the junction. Not dissimilar from a dark soliton, the instability becomes relevant at high pumping leading to formation of vortex dipoles. The resulting structures can be stabilised to produce static lattices of Josephson vortices in straight and ring geometries. Our results build towards realization of qua…
Nonequilibrium condensate systems such as exciton-polariton condensates are capable of supporting a spontaneous vortex nucleation. The spatial inhomogeneity of pumping field or/and disordered potential creates velocity flow fields that may become unstable to vortex formation. This letter considers ways in which turbulent states of interacting vortices can be created. It is shown that by combining just two pumping intensities it is possible to create a superfluid turbulence state of well-separated vortices, a strong turbulence state of de-structured vortices, or a weak turbulence state in which…
We investigate the process of coarsening via annihilation of vortex-antivortex pairs, following the quench to the condensate phase in a nonresonantly pumped polariton system. We find that the late-time dynamics is an example of universal phase ordering kinetics, characterized by scaling of correlation functions in time. Depending on the parameters of the system, the evolution of the characteristic length scale L(t) can be the same as for the two-dimensional XY model, described by a power law with the dynamical exponent z \aprox 2 and a logarithmic correction, or z \aprox 1 which agrees with pr…
We consider linear periodic chains of exciton-polariton condensates formed by pumping polaritons non-resonantly into a linear network. To the leading order, such a sequence of condensates establishes relative phases as to minimize a classical one-dimensional XY Hamiltonian with nearest and next to nearest neighbors. We show that the low energy states of polaritonic linear chains demonstrate various classical regimes: ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and frustrated spiral phases, where quantum or thermal fluctuations are expected to give rise to a spin liquid state. At the same time nonlinear i…
We study theoretically the emission of dark solitons induced by a moving defect in a nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensate. The number of created dark solitons per unit of time is found to be strongly dependent on the pump power. We relate the observed dynamics of this process to the oscillations of the drag force experienced by the condensate. We investigate the stability of the polariton quantum fluid and present various types of dynamics depending on the condensate and moving obstacle parameters. Furthermore, we provide analytical expressions for dark soliton dynamics using the …
Second-order time correlation measurements with a temporal resolution better than 3 ps were performed on a CdTe microcavity where spontaneous Bose-Einstein condensation is observed. After the laser pulse, the nonresonantly excited thermal polariton population relaxes into a coherent polariton condensate. Photon statistics of the light emitted by the microcavity evidences a clear phase transition from the thermal state to a coherent state, which occurs within 3.2 ps after the onset of stimulated scattering. Following this very fast transition, we show that the emission possesses a very high coh…
Improving the measurement precision of temperature is very important and challenging, especially in the low temperature range. Based on the existence of invariant subspaces during the polariton thermalization, we propose a new way to enhance the measurement precision of the low temperature and obtain Landau bound to avoid that the measurement uncertainty of the temperature diverges as the temperature approaches zero. The measurement precision of the low temperature increases significantly with the number of polariton states. In order to resist the dissipation, the incoherent pumping is necessa…
We provide an analytical and numerical description of relaxation oscillations in the nonresonantly pumped polariton condensate. The presented considerations are based on the open dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled to a pair of rate equations. The evolution of the condensate density can be explained qualitatively by studying the topology of the trajectory in phase space. We use a fixed points analysis for the classification of the different regimes of condensate dynamics, including fast stabilization, slow oscillations and ultrashort pulse emission. We obtain an analytical condition …
The family of one-dimensional localized solutions to dissipative nonlinear equations includes a variety of objects such as sources, sinks, shocks (kinks), and pulses. These states are in general accompanied by nontrivial density currents, which are not necessarily related to the movement of the object itself. We investigate the existence and physical properties of sink-type solutions in nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensates modeled by an open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. While sinks possess density profiles similar to bright solitons, they are qualitatively different obj…
We study driven-dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates in a two-mode Josephson system, such as a double-well potential, with asymmetrical pumping. We investigate nonlinear effects on the condensate populations and mode transitions. The generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations are modified in order to treat pumping of only a single mode. We characterize the steady-state solutions in such a system as well as criteria for potential trapping of a condensate mode. There are many possible steady-states, with different density and/or phase profiles. Transitions between different condensate modes can be …
Motivated by recent experiments on generation of wave patterns by a polariton condensate incident on a localized obstacle, we study the characteristics of such flows under the condition that irreversible processes play a crucial role in the system. The dynamics of a non-resonantly pumped polariton condensate in a quasi-one-dimensional quantum wire is modeled by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with additional phenomenological terms accounting for the dissipation and pumping processes. The response of the condensate flow to an external potential describing a localized obstacle is considered in the w…
We study the relation between the models commonly used to describe the dynamics of nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensates, namely the ones described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and by the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation including a separate equation for the reservoir density. In particular, we focus on the validity of the adiabatic approximation that allows to reduce the coupled condensate-reservoir dynamics to a single partial differential equation. We find that the adiabatic approximation consists of three independent analytical conditions that have to be …
The dynamics of spatial coherence and momentum distribution of polaritons in the regime of Bose-Einstein condensation are investigated in a GaAs microcavity with embedded quantum wells under nonresonant excitation with picosecond laser pulses. It is shown that the onset of the condensate first order sparial coherence is accompanied by narrowing of the polariton momentum distribution. At the same time, at sufficiently high excitation densities, there is significant qualitative discrepancy between the dynamic behavior of the width of the polariton momentum distribution determined from direct mea…
Dissipative solitons are non-decaying out-of-equilibrium entities that result from double balances between gain and loss, as well as nonlinearity and dispersion. Here we describe a scenario where double balances rely on the presence of multiple collective excitation channels in open-dissipative quantum systems. It differs from conventional single-channel scenario for well-known dissipative solitons such as dissipative Kerr solitons, in that the soliton itself arises in a decoupled excitation channel and hence coherent nonlinear excitation dynamics, but its background state corresponds to other…
We show theoretically that an open-dissipative polariton condensate confined within a trapping potential and driven by an incoherent pumping scheme gives rise to bistability between odd and even modes of the potential. Switching from one state to the other can be controlled via incoherent pulsing which becomes an important step towards construction of low-powered opto-electronic devices. The origin of the effect comes from modulational instability between odd and even states of the trapping potential governed by the nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions.
Strongly coupled light-matter systems can carry information over long distances and realize low threshold polariton lasing, condensation and superfluidity. These systems are highly non-equilibrium in nature, so constant nonzero fluxes manifest themselves even at the steady-state and are set by a complicated interplay between nonlinearity, dispersion, pumping, dissipation and interactions between the various constituents of the system. Based on the mean-field governing equations of lasers or polariton condensates, we develop a method for engineering and controlling the velocity profiles by mani…
For a coherent quantum mechanical two-level system driven with a linearly time-dependent detuning, the Landau-Zener model has served over decades as a textbook model of quantum dynamics. A particularly intriguing question is whether that framework can be extended to capture an intrinsical nonequilibrium nature for a quantum system with coherent and dissipative dynamics occurring on an equal footing. In this work, we are motivated to investigate the Landau-Zenner problem of polariton condensates in a periodic potential under nonresonant pumping, considering driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii e…

We show that in a non-equilibrium system of an exciton-polariton condensate, where polaritons are generated from incoherent pumping, a ring-shaped pump allows for stationary vortex memory elements of topological charge $m = 1$ or $m = -1$. Using simple potential guides we can choose whether to copy the same charge or invert it onto another spatially separate ring pump. Such manipulation of binary information opens the possibility of a new type processing using vortices as topologically protected memory components.
Optically pumping high quality semiconductor microcavities allows for the spontaneous formation of polariton condensates, which can propagate over distances of many microns. Tightly focussed pump spots here are found to produce expanding incoherent bottleneck polaritons which coherently amplify the ballistic polaritons and lead to the formation of unusual ring condensates. This quantum liquid is found to form a remarkable sunflower-like spatial ripple pattern which arises from self interference with Rayleigh-scattered coherent polariton waves in the Cerenkov regime.
Polariton condensation can be regarded as a self-organization phenomenon, where phase ordering is established among particles in the system. In such condensed systems, further ordering can possibly occur in the particle density distribution, under particular experimental conditions. In this work we report on spontaneous pattern formation in a polariton condensate under non-resonant optical pumping. The slightly elliptical ring-shaped excitation laser we employ is such to force condensation to occur in a single-energy state with periodic boundary conditions, giving rise to a multi-lobe standing…
We study non-equilibrium microcavity-polariton condensates (MPCs) in a harmonic potential trap theoretically. We calculate and analyze the steady state, collective-excitation modes and instability of MPCs. Within excitation modes, there exist Nambu-Goldstone modes that can reveal the pattern of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of MPCs. Bifurcation of the stable and unstable modes is identified in terms of the pumping power and spot size. The unstable mechanism associated with the inward supercurrent flow is characterized by the existence of a supersonic region within the condensate.
We predict the existence of novel spatially localized states of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates in semiconductor microcavities with fabricated periodic in-plane potentials. Our theory shows that, under the condition of continuous off-resonant pumping and losses associated with polariton decay, localization is observed for a wide range of optical pump parameters due to effective potentials self-induced by the polariton flows in the spatially periodic system. We reveal that the self-localization of exciton-polaritons in the lattice may occur both in the gaps and bands of the single-p…
The dynamics of propagating polariton condensates in one-dimensional microcavities is investigated through time resolved experiments. We find a strong increase in the condensate intensity when it travels through the non-resonantly excited area. This amplification is shown to come from bosonic stimulated relaxation of reservoir excitons into the polariton condensate, allowing for the repopulation of the condensate through non-resonant pumping. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate a polariton amplifier with a large band width, opening the way towards the transport of polaritons with high densitie…
We examine the photoluminescence of highly-excited exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. Under strong pumping, exciton-polariton condensates have been observed to undergo a lasing transition where strong coupling between the excitons and photons is lost. We discuss an alternative high-density scenario, where the strong coupling is maintained. We find that the photoluminescence smoothly transitions between the lower polariton energy to the cavity photon energy. An intuitive understanding of the change in spectral characteristics is given, as well as differences to the ph…
We use a one-dimensional polariton fluid in a semiconductor microcavity to explore the rich nonlinear dynamics of counter-propagating interacting Bose fluids. The intrinsically driven-dissipative nature of the polariton fluid allows to use resonant pumping to impose a phase twist across the fluid. When the polariton-polariton interaction energy becomes comparable to their kinetic energy, linear interference fringes transform into a train of solitons. A novel type of bistable behavior controlled by the phase twist across the fluid is experimentally evidenced.
We model generation of vortex modes in exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor micropillars, arranged into a hexagonal ring molecule, in the presence of TE-TM splitting. This splitting lifts the degeneracy of azimuthally modulated vortex modes with opposite topological charges supported by this structure, so that a number of non-degenerate vortex states characterized by different combinations of topological charges in two polarization components appears. We present a full bifurcation picture for such vortex modes and show that because they have different energies, they can be selectivel…
We theoretically explore the phase transition in inhomogeneous exciton-polariton condensates with variable pumping conditions. Through Bogoliubov excitations to the radial-symmetric solutions of complex Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we determine not only the bifurcation of stable and unstable modes by the sign of fluid compressibility but also two distinct stable modes which are characterized by the elementary excitations and the stability of singly quantized vortex. One state is the quasi-condensate BKT phase with Goldstone flat dispersion; the other state is the localized-BEC phase which exhibi…
In this paper, a non-Markovian Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed to describe the formation of a condensate in an exciton-polariton system under incoherent pumping. By introducing spatially delta-correlated noise terms, we observe a transition from a spatially ordered phase to a disordered one as the temperature increases. In course of this process, the population of the condensate is significantly reduced. Irregularly located separate dense spots of condensate above the transition temperature are revealed. Using the Gabor transform, it is shown that, with increasing temperature, the conden…
Basing on the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, it is predicted that a repulsive (defocusing) interaction makes a 2D polariton condensate able to accumulate its energy under above-resonance optical pumping. The energy can be accumulated during a lot of polariton lifetimes, resulting in the state in which the mismatch of the pump frequency is compensated by the blueshift of the polariton resonance. The process begins when the field density reaches the parametric scattering threshold that is inversely proportional to the polariton lifetime. Although the increase in energy may be arbitrarily slow in it…
We present a reaction/diffusion model for the formation of a lower polariton condensate in a micro cavity containing an organic semiconducting molecular crystalline film. Our model--based upon an anthracene film sandwiched between two reflecting dielectric mirrors--consists of three coupled fields corresponding to a gas of excitons created by an external driving pulse, a reservoir of vibron states formed by the coupling between a ground-state vibrational model and a cavity photon, and a lower polariton condensate. We show that at finite temperature, the presence of the vibron reservoir can aug…
We investigate, theoretically and numerically, the spin dynamics of a two-component exciton-polariton condensate created and sustained by non-resonant spin-polarized optical pumping of a semiconductor microcavity. Using the open-dissipative mean-field model, we show that the existence of well defined phase-locked steady states of the condensate may lead to efficient switching and control of spin (polarization) states with a non-resonant excitation. Spatially inhomogeneous pulsed excitations can cause symmetry breaking in the pseudo-spin structure of the condensate and lead to formation of non-…
Nonlinear wave patterns generated by the flow of polariton condensate past an obstacle are studied for quasi-one-dimensional microcavity geometry. It is shown that pumping and nonlinear damping play a crucial role in this process leading to sharp differences in subsonic and supersonic regimes. Subsonic flows result in a smooth disturbance of the equilibrium condensate around the obstacle whereas supersonic flow generates a dispersive shock wave in the flow upstream the obstacle and a long smooth downstream tail. Main characteristics of the wave pattern are calculated analytically and analytica…
