Define the sequence $\{b_n\}$ by $b_0=1,b_1=1, b_2=2,b_3=1$, and $$b_n=\begin{cases} \frac{b_{n-1}b_{n-3}-b_{n-2}^2}{b_{n-4}}&\textrm{if}~ n\not\equiv 0\pmod 3, \frac{b_{n-1}b_{n-3}-3b_{n-2}^2}{b_{n-4}}&\textrm{if}~ n\equiv 0\pmod 3. We relate this sequence $\{b_n\}$ to the coordinates of points on the elliptic curve $E:y^2+y=x^3-3x+4$. We use Galois representations attached to $E$ to prove that the density of primes dividing a term in this sequence is equal to $\frac{179}{336}$. Furthermore, we describe an infinite family of elliptic curves whose Galois images match that of $E$.
Here, we give upper and lower bounds on the count of positive integers $n\le x$ dividing the $n$th term of a nondegenerate linearly recurrent sequence with simple roots.
Given positive integers a,b,c and d such that c and d are coprime we show that the primes p=c(mod d)dividing a^k+b^k for some k>=1 have a natural density and explicitly compute this density. We demonstrate our results by considering some claims of Fermat that he made in a 1641 letter to Mersenne.
We describe first-degree prime ideals of biquadratic extensions in terms of first-degree prime ideals of two underlying quadratic fields. The identification of the prime divisors is given by numerical conditions involving their ideal norms. Interestingly, the correspondence between these ideals in the larger ring and those in the smaller ones extends to the divisibility of principal ideals in their respective rings, with some exceptions that we explicitly provide. Finally, we hint at possible applications of this correspondence.
The Somos-5 sequence is defined by $a_{0} = a_{1} = a_{2} = a_{3} = a_{4} = 1$ and $a_{m} = \frac{a_{m-1} a_{m-4} + a_{m-2} a_{m-3}}{a_{m-5}}$ for $m \geq 5$. We relate the arithmetic of the Somos-5 sequence to the elliptic curve $E : y^{2} + xy = x^{3} + x^{2} - 2x$ and use properties of Galois representations attached to $E$ to prove the density of primes $p$ dividing some term in the Somos-5 sequence is equal to $\frac{5087}{10752}$.
Let $(u_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a nondegenerate linear recurrence of integers, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of positive integers $n$ such that $u_n$ and $n$ are relatively prime. We prove that $\mathcal{A}$ has an asymptotic density, and that this density is positive unless $(u_n / n)_{n \geq 1}$ is a linear recurrence.
We define $g(n)$ to be the maximal order of an element of the symmetric group on $n$ elements. Results about the prime factorization of $g(n)$ allow a reduction of the upper bound on the largest prime divisor of $g(n)$ to $1.328\sqrt{n\log n}$.
For the sequence defined by a(n) = a(n-1) + gcd(n, a(n-1)) with a(1) = 7 we prove that a(n) - a(n-1) takes on only 1s and primes, making this recurrence a rare "naturally occurring" generator of primes. Toward a generalization of this result to an arbitrary initial condition, we also study the limiting behavior of a(n)/n and a transience property of the evolution.
Stewart (2013) proved that the biggest prime divisor of the $n$th term of a Lucas sequence of integers grows quicker than $n$, answering famous questions of Erdős and Schinzel. In this note we obtain a fully explicit and, in a sense, uniform version of Stewart's result.
For a class of Lucas sequences ${x_n}$, we show that if $n$ is a positive integer then $x_n$ has a primitive prime factor which divides $x_n$ to an odd power, except perhaps when $n = 1, 2, 3 or 6$. This has several desirable consequences.
We give a bound on the primes dividing the denominators of invariants of Picard curves of genus 3 with complex multiplication. Unlike earlier bounds in genus 2 and 3, our bound is based not on bad reduction of curves, but on a very explicit type of good reduction. This approach simultaneously yields a simplification of the proof, and much sharper bounds. In fact, unlike all previous bounds for genus 3, our bound is sharp enough for use in explicit constructions of Picard curves.
Let $d \ge 3$ be an integer and let $P \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ whose Galois group is $S_d$. Let $(a_n)$ be a linearly recuresive sequence of integers which has $P$ as its characteristic polynomial. We prove, under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, that the lower density of the set of primes which divide at least one element of the sequence $(a_n)$ is positive.
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $f(x) := x^{2^n}+1$. In this paper, we study orders of primes dividing products of the form $P_{m,n}:=f(1)f(2)\cdots f(m)$. We prove that if $m > \max\{10^{12},4^{n+1}\}$, then there exists a prime divisor $p$ of $P_{m,n}$ such that ord$_{p}(P_{m,n} )\leq n\cdot 2^{n-1}$. For $n=2$, we establish that for every positive integer $m$, there exists a prime divisor $p$ of $P_{m,2}$ such that ord$_{p} (P_{m,2}) \leq 4$. Consequently, $P_{m,2}$ is never a fifth or higher power. This extends work of Cilleruelo who studied the case $n=1$.
We investigate when the sequence of binomial coefficients \binom{k}{i} modulo a prime p, for a fixed positive integer k, satisfies a linear recurrence relation of (positive) degree h in the finite range 0\le i\le k. In particular, we prove that this cannot occur if 2h\le k<p-h. This hypothesis can be weakened to 2h\le k<p if we assume, in addition, that the characteristic polynomial of the relation does not have -1 as a root. We apply our results to recover a known bound for the number of points of a Fermat curve over a finite field.
Let $\{u_{n}\}_{n \geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate binary recurrence sequence with positive, square-free discriminant and $p$ be a fixed prime number. In this paper, we have shown the finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $u_{n_{1}} + u_{n_{2}} + \cdots + u_{n_{t}} = p^{z}$ with some conditions on $n_i $ for all $1\leq i \leq t$. Moreover, we explicitly find all the powers of three which are sums of three balancing numbers using the lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms. Further, we use a variant of Baker-Davenport reduction method in Diophantine approximation due t…
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[n]{a})$ be an extension of degree $n$ of the field $\Q$ of rational numbers, where the integer $a$ is such that for each prime $p$ dividing $n$ either $p\nmid a$ or the highest power of $p$ dividing $a$ is coprime to $p$; this condition is clearly satisfied when $a, n$ are coprime or $a$ is squarefree. The paper contains an explicit formula for the discriminant of $K$ involving only the prime powers dividing $a,n$.
Let $\ell \geq 5$ be a prime and let $N$ be a square-free integer prime to $\ell$. For each prime $p$ dividing $N$, let $a_p$ be either $1$ or $-1$. We give sufficient criteria for the existence of a newform $f$ of weight 2 for $Γ_0(N)$ such that the mod $\ell$ Galois representation attached to $f$ is reducible and $U_p f = a_p f$ for primes $p$ dividing $N$. The main techniques used are level raising methods based on an exact sequence due to Ribet.
We consider primitive divisors of terms of integer sequences defined by quadratic polynomials. Apart from some small counterexamples, when a term has a primitive divisor, that primitive divisor is unique. It seems likely that the number of terms with a primitive divisor has a natural density. We discuss two heuristic arguments to suggest a value for that density, one using recent advances made about the distribution of roots of polynomial congruences.
Let $\{ {U_{n}\}_{n \geq 0} }$ be a non-degenerate binary recurrence sequence with positive discriminant. Let $\{p_1,\ldots, p_s\}$ be fixed prime numbers and $\{b_1,\ldots ,b_s\}$ be fixed non-negative integers. In this paper, we obtain the finiteness result for the solution of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_{1}} + \cdots + U_{n_{t}} = b_1 p_1^{z_1} + \cdots+ b_s p_s^{z_s} $ under certain assumptions. Moreover, we explicitly solve the equation $F_{n_1}+ F_{n_2}= 2^{z_1} +3^{z_2}$, in non-negative integers $n_1, n_2, z_1, z_2$ with $z_2\geq z_1$. The main tools used in this work are the lower …
We describe the set of prime numbers splitting completely in the non-abelian splitting field of certain monic irreducible polynomials of degree three. As an application we establish some divisibility properties of the associated ternary recurrence sequence by primes $p$, thus greatly extending recent work of Evink and Helminck and of Faisant. We also prove some new results on the number of solutions of the characteristic equation of the recurrence sequence modulo $p,$ extending and simplifying earlier work of Zhi-Hong Sun (2003).
In 1927, Artin conjectured that any integer other than -1 or a perfect square generates the multiplicative group $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}^\times$ for infinitely many $p$. In \cite{MoSt}, Moree and Stevenhagen considered a two-variable version of this problem, and proved a positive density result conditionally to the generalized Riemann Hypothesis by adapting a proof by Hooley for the original conjecture (\cite{Ho}). In this article, we prove an unconditional lower bound for this two-variable problem. In particular, we prove an estimate for the number of distinct primes which divide one of the f…
Let $K=\mathbb Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ a root of an irreducible trinomial $f(x)=x^6+ax+b$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. In this paper, for each prime number $p$ we compute the highest power of $p$ dividing the discriminant of $K$ in terms of the prime powers dividing $a,~b$ and discriminant of $f(x)$. An explicit $p$-integral basis of $K$ is also given for each prime $p$ and a method is described to obtain an integral basis of $K$ from these $p$-integral bases which is illustrated with examples.
Let $S := \{p_1,\ldots ,p_{\ell}\}$ be a finite set of primes and denote by $\mathcal{U}_S$ the set of all rational integers whose prime factors are all in $S$. Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence with order at least two. In this paper, we provide a finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $aU_n + bU_m = z_1 +\cdots +z_r,$ where $n\geq m$ and $z_1, \ldots, z_r\in \mathcal{U}_S$.
Let $E\subset \mathbb Z$ be a set of positive upper density. Suppose that $P_1,P_2,..., P_k\in \mathbb Z[X]$ are polynomials having zero constant terms. We show that the set $E\cap (E-P_1(p-1))\cap ... \cap (E-P_k(p-1))$ is non-empty for some prime number $p$. Furthermore, we prove convergence in $L^2$ of polynomial multiple averages along the primes.
In this article, we develop four types of analytical recurrence formulas for non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function on critical line assuming (RH). Thus, all non-trivial zeros up to the $n$th order must be known in order to generate the $n$th+1 non-trivial zero. All the presented formulas are based on certain closed-form representations of the secondary zeta function family, which are already available in the literature. We also present a formula to generate the non-trivial zeros directly from primes. Thus all primes can be converted into an individual non-trivial zero, and we also giv…
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
Consider a sequence of positive integers of the form $ca^n-d$, $n\geq 1$, where $a, c$ and $d$ are positive integers, $a>1$. For each $n\geq 1$, let $S_n$ be the submonoid of $\mathbb N$ generated by $\mathbf s_j=ca^{n+j}-d$, with $j\in\mathbb N$. We obtain a numerical semigroup $(1/e)S_n$ by dividing every element of $S_n$ by $e=\gcd(S_n)$. We characterize the embedding dimension of $S_n$ and describe a method to find the minimal generating set of $S_n$. We also show how to find the maximum element of the Apéry set ${\rm Ap}(S_n, \mathbf s_0)$, characterize the elements of ${\rm Ap}(S_n, \mat…
Let $(X,B_X,μ,T)$ be a measure-preserving probability system with $T$ is invertible. Suppose that $A\in B_X$ with $μ(A)>0$ and $ε>0$. For any $m\geq 1$, there exist infinitely many primes $p_0,p_1,\ldots,p_m$ with $p_0<\cdots<p_m$ such that $$ μ(A\cap T^{-(p_i-1)}A)\geq μ(A)^2-ε$$ for each $0\leq i\leq m$ and $$ p_m-p_0<C_m, $$ where $C_m>0$ is a constant only depending on $m$, $A$ and $ε$.

This article, complement to the article [Que], deals with some generalizations of Futwängler's theorems for the second case of Fermat's Last Theorem (FLT2). Let $p$ be an odd prime, $ζ$ a $p$th primitive root of unity, $K:=\Q(ζ)$ and $C\ell_K$ the class group of $K$. A prime $q$ is said $p$-principal if the class $c\ell_K (\mk q_K)\in C\ell_K$ of any prime ideal $\mk q_K$ of $\Z_K$ over $q$ is the $p$th power of a class. Assume that FLT2 fails for $(p,x,y,z)$ where $x, y, z$ are mutually coprime integers, $p$ divides $y$ and $x^p+y^p+z^p=0$. Let $q$ be a prime dividing $\frac{(x^p+y^p)(y^p+z^p…
In this paper, we develop Furstenberg's proof of infinity of primes, and prove several results about prime divisors of sequences of integers, including the celebrated Schur's theorem. In particular, we give a simple proof of a classical result which says that a non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence of integers of order k>1 has infinitely many prime divisors.
Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\…
Let $p$ be a prime number and $E_{p}$ denote the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3+px$. It is known that for $p$ which is congruent to $1, 9$ modulo $16$, the rank of $E_{p}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ is equal to $0, 2$. Under the condition that the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is true, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the rank is $2$ in terms of the constant term of some polynomial that is defined by a recurrence formula.
Let $(x_n)_{n\geq0}$ be a linear recurrence of order $k\geq2$ satisfying $$x_n=a_1x_{n-1}+a_2x_{n-2}+\dots+a_kx_{n-k}$$ for all integers $n\geq k$, where $a_1,\dots,a_k,x_0,\dots, x_{k-1}\in \mathbb{Z},$ with $a_k\neq0$. In [`The quotient set of $k$-generalised Fibonacci numbers is dense in $\mathbb{Q}_p$', \emph{Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.} \textbf{96} (2017), 24-29], Sanna posed an open question to classify primes $p$ for which the quotient set of $(x_n)_{n\geq0}$ is dense in $\mathbb{Q}_p$. In this article, we find a sufficient condition for denseness of the quotient set of the $k$th-order linea…
Let $S = \{q_1, \ldots , q_s\}$ be a finite, non-empty set of distinct prime numbers. For a non-zero integer $m$, write $m = q_1^{r_1} \ldots q_s^{r_s} M$, where $r_1, \ldots , r_s$ are non-negative integers and $M$ is an integer relatively prime to $q_1 \ldots q_s$. We define the $S$-part $[m]_S$ of $m$ by $[m]_S := q_1^{r_1} \ldots q_s^{r_s}$. Let $(u_n)_{n \ge 0}$ be a linear recurrence sequence of integers. Under certain necessary conditions, we establish that for every $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists an integer $n_0$ such that $[u_n]_S\leq |u_n|^{\varepsilon}$ holds for $n > n_0$. Our pro…
Let A,A' be elliptic curves or abelian varieties fully of type GSp defined over a number field K. This includes principally polarized abelian varieties with geometric endomorphism ring Z and dimension 2 or odd. We compare the number of points on the reductions of the two varieties. We prove that A and A' are K-isogenous if the following condition holds for a density-one set of primes p of K: the prime numbers dividing #A(k_p) also divide #A'(k_p). We generalize this statement to some extent for products of such varieties. This refines results of Hall and Perucca (2011) and of Ratazzi (2012).
Let N_{a,b}(x) count the number of primes p<=x with p dividing a^k+b^k for some k>=1. It is known that asymptotically N_{a,b}(x) grows like c(a,b)x/log x for some rational number c(a,b) that depends in a rather intricate way on a and b. A simple heuristic formula for N_{a,b}(x) is proposed and it is proved that it is asymptotically exact, i.e. has the same asymptotic behaviour as N_{a,b}(x). Connections with Ramanujan sums and character sums are discussed.
Let E/F be a CM field split above a finite place v of F, let l be a rational prime number which is prime to v, and let S be the set of places of E dividing lv. If E_S denotes a maximal algebraic extension of E unramified outside S, and if u is a place of E dividing v, we show that any field embedding E_S \to \bar{E_u} has a dense image. The "unramified outside S" number fields we use are cut out from the l-adic cohomology of the "simple" Shimura varieties studied by Kottwitz and Harris-Taylor. The main ingredients of the proof are then the local Langlands correspondence for GL_n, the main glob…
Given an elliptic curve E over a finite field F_q of q elements, we say that an odd prime ell not dividing q is an Elkies prime for E if t_E^2 - 4q is a square modulo ell, where t_E = q+1 - #E(F_q) and #E(F_q) is the number of F_q-rational points on E; otherwise ell is called an Atkin prime. We show that there are asymptotically the same number of Atkin and Elkies primes ell < L on average over all curves E over F_q, provided that L >= (log q)^e for any fixed e > 0 and a sufficiently large q. We use this result to design and analyse a fast algorithm to generate random elliptic curves with #E(F…
We investigate the Galois group $G_S(p)$ of the maximal $p$-extension unramified outside a finite $S$ of primes of a number field in the (tame) case, when no prime dividing $p$ is in $S$. We show that the cohomology of $G_S(p)$ is 'often' isomorphic to the etale cohomology of the scheme $\Spec(Ø_k \sm S)$, in particular, $G_S(p)$ is of cohomological dimension~2 then.
We prove two "large images" results for the Galois representations attached to a degree $d$ Q-curve $E$ over a quadratic field $K$: if $K$ is arbitrary, we prove maximality of the image for every prime $p >13$ not dividing $d$, provided that $d$ is divisible by $q$ (but $d \neq q$) with $q=2$ or 3 or 5 or 7 or 13. If $K$ is real we prove maximality of the image for every odd prime $p$ not dividing $d D$, where $D = \disc(K)$, provided that $E$ is a semistable Q-curve. In both cases we make the (standard) assumptions that $E$ does not have potentially good reduction at all primes $p \nmid 6$ an…
Let $F$ be a number field, let $N\geq 3$ be an integer, and let $k$ be a finite field of characteristic $\ell$. We show that if $\rb:G_F\longrightarrow GL_N(k)$ is a continuous representation with image of $\rb$ containing $SL_N(k)$ then, under moderate conditions at primes dividing $\ell\infty$, there is a continuous representation $ρ:G_F\longrightarrow GL_N(W(k))$ unramified outside finitely many primes with $\rb\simρ\mod{\ell}$.
We generalize a theorem of Ogg on supersingular $j$-invariants to supersingular elliptic curves with level. Ogg observed that the level one case yields a characterization of the primes dividing the order of the monster. We show that the corresponding analyses for higher levels give analogous characterizations of the primes dividing the orders of other sporadic simple groups (e.g., baby monster, Fischer's largest group). This situates Ogg's theorem in a broader setting. More generally, we characterize, in terms of supersingular elliptic curves with level, the primes arising as orders of Fricke …
We show that under a suitable oddness condition, irreducible mod $p$ representations of the absolute Galois group of an arbitrary number field have characteristic zero lifts which are unramified outside a finite set of primes and trianguline at all primes of $F$ dividing $p$. We also prove variants of this result for representations valued in connected reductive groups.
Given a Siegel theta series and a prime p not dividing the level of the theta series, we apply to the theta series the n+1 Hecke operators that generate the local Hecke algebra at p. We show that the average theta series is an eigenform and we compute the eigenvalues.
We consider integer recurrences of the form a_n = f(a_{n-1}), where f is a quadratic polynomial with integer coefficients. We show, for four infinite families of f, that the set of primes dividing at least one term of such a sequence must have density zero, regardless of choice of a_0. The proof relies on tools from group theory and probability theory to develop a zero-density criterion in terms of arithmetic properties of the forward orbit of the critical point of f. This provides an analogy to results in real and complex dynamics, where analytic properties of the forward orbit of the critica…
For integer a let us consider the sequence X_a={x_0,x_1,x_2,...} defined by x_0=a, x_1=1 and, for n>=1, x_{n+1}=x_n+x_{n-1}. We say that a prime p divides X_a if p divides at least one term of the sequence. It is easy to see that every prime p divides X_1, the sequence of Fibonacci numbers. Lagarias, using a technique involving the computation of degrees of various Kummerian extensions first employed by Hasse, showed in 1985 that X_2, the set of primes dividing some Lucas number has natural density 2/3 and posed as a challenge finding the density of prime divisors of X_3. In this paper we reso…
