The Cauchy problem for the compressible flow of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of critical spaces is considered. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of global solutions provided that the initial data are close to some equilibrium states. This result improves the work by Hu and Wu [SIAM J. Math. Anal., 45 (2013), pp. 2678-2699] through relaxing the regularity requirement of the initial data in terms of the director field. We then consider the incompressible limit problem for ill prepared initial data. We prove that as the Mach number tends to zero, the global solution to the compressible flow of liquid crystals converges to the solution to the corresponding incompressible model in some function spaces. Moreover, the accurate converge rates are obtained.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a compressible Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions. Under some smallness assumptions on the initial data, we obtain the global wellposedness of strong solution with uniform regularity. Moreover, we provide a rigorous justification for the link between the compressible model and the corresponding incompressible model via incompressible limits.
In this paper we study the incompressible inviscid limit for a compressible micro-polar model. We prove that the weak solution of the compressible micro-polar system converges to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (Euler equations) in the limit of small Mach number (and vanishing viscosity).
The connection between the compressible flow of liquid crystals with low Mach number and the incompressible flow of liquid crystals is studied in a bounded domain. In particular, the convergence of weak solutions of the compressible flow of liquid crystals to the weak solutions of the incompressible flow of liquid crystals is proved when the Mach number approaches zero; that is, the incompressible limit is justified for weak solutions in a bounded domain.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible hydrodynamic flow of liquid crystals with periodic boundary conditions in R^N(N = 2, 3). It is rigorously shown that the local (and global) strong solution of the compressible system converges to the local (and global) strong solution of the incompressible system. Furthermore, the convergence rates are also obtained in some sense.
The present paper is dedicated to the global large solutions and incompressible limit for the compressible flow of liquid crystals under the assumption on almost constant density and large volume viscosity. The result is based on Fourier analysis and involved so-called critical Besov norm.
Accurate asymptotic solutions are presented for axisymmetric deformation of thin layers constrained by either two rigid plates or two rigid spheres. Those solutions are developed using Saint-Venant's principle and the layer thinness as the only assumptions. The solutions are valid in the entire range of Poisson's ratios, and allow one to distinguish among compressible, nearly incompressible, and incompressible layers. That classification involves both material and geometric parameters.
Consider two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D in the isentropic approximation. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, the coupled dynamics of the two fluids results as the compressible to incompressible limit and is known to satisfy an ODE--PDE system. Below, a characterization of this limit is provided, ensuring its uniqueness.
In this paper we establish the uniform estimates of strong solutions with respect to the Mach number and the dielectric constant to the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system in a bounded domain. Based on these uniform estimates, we obtain the convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations for well-prepared data.
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with periodic boundary conditions. It is rigorously shown that the weak solutions of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converge to the strong solution of the viscous or inviscid incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter exists both for the well-prepared initial data and general initial data. Furthermore, the convergence rates are also obtained in the case of the well-prepared initial data.
This article is devoted to the study of the so-called incompressible limit for solutions of the compressible liquid crystals system. We consider the problem in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$ and a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here the number of dimension $\mathbb{N}=2$ or 3.
We study the incompressible limit of the compressible non-isentropic magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero magnetic diffusivity and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $(d=2,3)$. We first establish the existence of classic solutions on a time interval independent of the Mach number. Then, by deriving uniform a priori estimates, we obtain the convergence of the solution to that of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the Mach number tends to zero.
This paper is concerned with the basic model for compressible and incompressible two phase flows with phase transitions The flows are separated by nearly flat interface represented as a graph over the $N-1$ dimensional Euclidean space ${\Bbb R}^{N-1}$ ($N \geq 2$). The local well-posedness is proved by the Banach fixed point theorem based on the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity theorm for the linearized problem.
We consider a free boundary problem of compressible-incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions in general domains of $N$-dimensional Euclidean space (e.g. whole space; half-spaces; bounded domains; exterior domains). The compressible fluid and the incompressible fluid are separated by either compact or non-compact sharp moving interface, and the surface tension is taken into account. In our model, the compressible fluid and incompressible fluid are occupied by the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, respectively. This paper shows that for given $T > 0$ …
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vanishing viscosity coefficients and general initial data in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ $ (d=2$ or 3). It is rigorously showed that, as the Mach number, the shear viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusion coefficient simultaneously go to zero, the weak solution of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to the strong solution of the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter exists.
We give an existence and asymptotic result for the so-called finite energy weak martingale solution of the compressible isentropic Navier--Stokes system driven by some random force in the whole spatial region. In particular, given a general nonlinear multiplicative noise, we establish the convergence to the incompressible system as the Mach number, representing the ratio between the average flow velocity and the speed of sound, approaches zero.
In this paper, we prove the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity of the compressible and incompressible two phase flow with phase transition in the model problem case with the help of ${\mathcal R}$-bounded solution operators corresponding to generalized resolvent problem. The problem arises from the mathematical study of the motion of two-phase flows having gaseous phase and liquid phase separated by a sharp interface with phase transition. Using the result obtained in this paper, in \cite{S0} we proved the local well-posedness of free boundary problem for the compressible and incompressible two ph…
Energy conservations are studied for inhomogeneous incompressible and compressible Euler equations with general pressure law in a torus or a bounded domain. We provide sufficient conditions for a weak solution to conserve the energy. By exploiting a suitable test function, the spatial regularity for the density is only required to be of order $2/3$ in the incompressible case, and of order $1/3$ in the compressible case. When the density is constant, we recover the existing results for classical incompressible Euler equation.
The present paper is dedicated to the global large solutions and incompressible limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d\ge 2$. We aim at extending the work by Danchin and Mucha (Adv. Math., 320, 904--925, 2017) in $L^2$ structure to that in a critical $L^p$ framework. The result implies the existence of global large solutions initially from large highly oscillating velocity fields.
In this paper, we prove the a priori estimates in Sobolev spaces for the free-boundary compressible inviscid magnetohydrodynamics equations with magnetic diffusion under the Rayleigh-Taylor physical sign condition. Our energy estimates are uniform in the sound speed. As a result, we can prove the convergence of solutions of the free-boundary compressible resistive MHD equations to the solution of the free-boundary incompressible resistive MHD equations, i.e., the incompressible limit. The key observation is that the magnetic diffusion together with elliptic estimates directly controls the Lore…
We prove the existence of a weak solution to the compressible Navier--Stokes system with singular pressure that explodes when density achieves its congestion level. This is a quantity whose initial value evolves according to the transport equation. We then prove that the "stiff pressure" limit gives rise to the two-phase compressible/incompressible system with congestion constraint describing the free interface. We prescribe of the velocity at the boundary and the value of density at the inflow part of the boundary of a general bounded $C^2$ domain. There are no restrictions on the size of the…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the isentropic Navier-Stokes system driven by a multiplicative stochastic forcing in the compressible regime, where the Mach number approaches zero. Our approach is based on the recently developed concept of weak martingale solution to the primitive system, uniform bounds derived from a stochastic analogue of the modulated energy inequality, and careful analysis of acoustic waves. A stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes system is identified as the limit problem.
Here we prove the existence of global in time regular solutions to the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with arbitrary large initial velocity $v\_0$ and almost constantdensity $\varrho\_0$, for large volume (bulk) viscosity. The result is generalized to the higher dimensional case under the additional assumption that the strong solution of the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with the divergence-freeprojection of $v\_0,$ is global. The systems are examined in $R^d$ with $d \geq 2$, in the critical $\dot B^s\_{2,1}$ Besov spaces fram…
In this paper, we prove a new type of energy estimates for the compressible Euler's equation with free boundary, with a boundary part and an interior part. These can be thought of as a generalization of the energies in Christodoulou and Lindblad [CL] to the compressible case and do not require the fluid to be irrotational. In addition, we show that our estimates are in fact uniform in the sound speed. As a consequence, we obtain convergence of solutions of compressible Euler equations with a free boundary to solutions of the incompressible equations, generalizing the result of Ebin [Eb] to whe…
We explore the behaviour of global-in-time weak solutions to a class of bead-spring chain models, with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring potentials, for dilute polymeric fluids. In the models under consideration the solvent is assumed to be a compressible, isentropic, viscous, isothermal Newtonian fluid, confined to a bounded open domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the velocity field is assumed to satisfy a complete slip boundary condition. We show that as the Mach number tends to zero the system is driven to its incompressible counterpart.
This paper is concerned with the mathematical derivation of the inhomoge-neous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (INS) from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) in the large volume viscosity limit. We first prove a result of large time existence of regular solutions for (CNS). Next, as a consequence, we establish that the solutions of (CNS) converge to those of (INS) when the volume viscosity tends to infinity. Analysis is performed in the two dimensional torus, for general initial data. In particular, we are able to handle large variations of density.
We propose a model of a density-dependent compressible-incompressible fluid, which is intended as a simplified version of models based on mixture theory as, for instance, those arising in the study of biofilms, tumor growth and vasculogenesis. Though our model is, in some sense, close to the density-dependent incompressible Euler equations, it presents some differences that require a different approach from an analytical point of view. In this paper, we establish a result of local existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces to our model, using paradifferential techniques. Besides, …
Global Existence and Incompressible Limit for the Three-Dimensional Axisymmetric Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Bulk Viscosity and Large Initial Data
We study the existence of weak solutions to the two-phase model of crowd motion. The model encompasses the flow in the uncongested regime (compressible) and the congested one (incompressible) with the free boundary separating the two phases. The congested regime appears when the density in the uncongested regime $\varrho^*(t,x)$ achieves a threshold value $\varrho^*(t,x)$ that describes the comfort zone of individuals. This quantity is prescribed initially and transported along with the flow. We prove that this system can be approximated by the fully compressible Navier-Stokes system with a si…
Consider a free boundary problem of compressible-incompressible two-phase flows with surface tension and phase transition in bounded domains $Ω_{t +}, Ω_{t -} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, where the domains are separated by a sharp compact interface $Γ_t \subset \mathbb{R}^{N - 1}$. We prove a global in time unique existence theorem for such free boundary problem under the assumption that the initial data are sufficiently small and the initial domain of the incompressible fluid is close to a ball. In particular, we obtain the solution in the maximal $L_p - L_q$-regularity class with $2 < p…

Global Existence and Incompressible Limit of the Cauchy Problem for 2D Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Bulk Viscosity and Large Initial Data
This article addresses a fundamental concern regarding the incompressible approximation of fluid motions, one of the most widely used approximations in fluid mechanics. Common belief is that its accuracy is $O(ε)$ where $ε$ denotes the Mach number. In this article, however, we prove an $O(ε^2)$ accuracy for the incompressible approximation of the isentropic, compressible Euler equations thanks to several decoupling properties. At the initial time, the velocity field and its first time derivative are of $O(1)$ size, but the boundary conditions can be as stringent as the solid-wall type. The fas…

Global weak solutions and incompressible limit to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the half-plane with ripped density and large initial data
We give sufficient conditions on the regularity of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler and the compressible isentropic Euler systems in order for the energy to be conserved. Our strategy relies on commutator estimates similar to those employed by P. Constantin et al. for the homogeneous incompressible Euler equations.
We study the compressible and incompressible two-phase flows separated by a sharp interface with a phase transition and a surface tension. In particular, we consider the problem in $\mathbb{R}^N$, and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations is used in the upper domain and the Navier-Stokes equations is used in the lower domain. We prove the existence of $\mathcal{R}$-bounded solution operator families for a resolvent problem arising from its model problem. According to Shibata \cite{GS2014}, the regularity of $ρ_+$ is $W^1_q$ in space, but to solve the kinetic equation: $\mathbf{u}_Γ\cdot\mathbf{…
We consider 3D free-boundary compressible elastodynamic system under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition. It describes the motion of an isentropic inviscid elastic medium with moving boundary. The deformation tensor satisfies the neo-Hookean linear elasticity. The local well-posedness was proved by Trakhinin [84] by Nash-Moser iteration. In this paper, we give a new proof of the local well-posedness by the combination of classical energy method and hyperbolic approach and also establish the incompressible limit. We apply the tangential smoothing method to define the approximation system. The ke…

This work presents qualitative and numerical results on a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) which models certain fluid-fluid interaction dynamics. This system models a compressible fluid in a domain $Ω^+ \subset \mathbb{R}^2$, coupled to an incompressible fluid modeled by Stokes flow in domain $Ω^- \subset \mathbb{R}^2$, with the strong coupling implemented through certain boundary conditions on the shared interface, $Γ$. The wellposedness of this system is established by means of constructing for it a semigroup generator representation. This representation is accomplished by eli…
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
This paper addresses the weak-strong uniqueness property and singular limit for the compressible Primitive Equations (PE). We show that a weak solution coincides with the strong solution emanating from the same initial data. On the other hand, we prove compressible PE will approach the incompressible inviscid PE equations in the regime of low Mach number and large Reynolds number in the case of well-prepared initial data. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to bridge the link between the compressible PE with incompressible inviscid PE.
Consider the linear stability of the three dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}$. We prove the enhanced dissipation phenomenon for the linearized isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations around the Couette flow $(y, 0, 0)^\top$. Moreover, the lift-up phenomenon is also shown in this paper. Compared with the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations [Ann. of Math.,185(2017), 541--608], the lift-up effect here is stronger due to the loss of the incompressible condition.
We study the incompressible limit of solutions to the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes system in the exterior of a bounded domain undergoing a simple translation. The problem is reformulated using a change of coordinates to fixed exterior domain. Using the spectral analysis of the wave propagator, the dispersion of acoustic waves is proved by the means of the RAGE theorem. The solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is identified as a limit.
