We examine the nature of topological currents in black phosphorus when its inversion symmetry is deliberately broken. Here, the conduction and valence band edges are located at the $Γ$ point of the rectangular Brillouin zone, and they exhibit strong anisotropy along its two crystal axes. We will show below that these salient features lead to a linear transverse neutral topological currents, accompanied also by a non-linear transverse charge current at the Fermi surface. These topological currents are maximal when the in-plane electric field is applied along the zigzag crystal axes, but zero along the armchair direction.
We report the realization of novel symmetry-protected Dirac fermions in a surface-doped two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, black phosphorus. The widely tunable band gap of black phosphorus by the surface Stark effect is employed to achieve a surprisingly large band inversion up to ~0.6 eV. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra directly reveal the pair creation of Dirac points and their moving along the axis of the glide-mirror symmetry. Unlike graphene, the Dirac point of black phosphorus is stable, as protected by spacetime inversion symmetry, even in the presence of spin-orbi…
Black phosphorous (BP) is a layered semiconductor with high carrier mobility, anisotropic optical response and wide bandgap tunability. In view of its application in optoelectronic devices, understanding transient photo-induced effects is crucial. Here, we investigate by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy BP in its pristine state and in the presence of Stark splitting, chemically induced by Cs ad-sorption. We show that photo-injected carriers trigger bandgap renormalization and a concurrent valence band attening caused by Pauli blocking. In the biased sample, photoexcitation l…
Based on first-principles calculations and tight-binding model analysis, we propose that black phosphorus (BP) can host a three-dimensional topological node-line semimetal state under pressure when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. A closed topological node line exists in the first Brillouin zone (BZ) near the Fermi energy, which is protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetry with band inversion driven by pressure. Drumhead-like surface states have been obtained on the beard (100) surface. Due to the weak intrinsic SOC of phosphorus atom, a band gap less th…
Black phosphorus consists of stacked layers of phosphorene, a two-dimensional semiconductor with promising device characteristics. We report the realization of a widely tunable bandgap in few-layer black phosphorus doped with potassium using an in-situ surface doping technique. Through band-structure measurements and calculations, we demonstrate that a vertical electric field from dopants modulates the bandgap owing to the giant Stark effect and tunes the material from a moderate-gap semiconductor to a band-inverted semimetal. At the critical field of this band inversion, the material becomes …

Phosphorene is a novel two-dimensional material that can be isolated through mechanical exfoliation from layered black phosphorus, but unlike graphene and silicene, monolayer phosphorene has a large band gap. It was thus unsuspected to exhibit band inversion and the ensuing topological insulator behavior. It has recently attracted interest because of its proposed application as field effect transistors. Using first-principles calculations with applied perpendicular electric field F we predict a continuous transition from the normal insulator to a topological insulator and eventually to a metal…
Black phosphorus is a material with an intrinsic anisotropy in electronic and optical properties due to its puckered honeycomb lattice. Optical absorption is different for incident light with linear polarization in the armchair and zigzag directions (linear dichroism). These directions are also used in the cuts of materials to create black phosphorus nanoribbons. Edges of nanoribbons usually have small reconstruction effects, with minor electronic effects. Here, we show a reconstruction of the armchair edge that introduces a new valence band, which flattens the puckered lattice and increases t…
Charge transport through a rectangular vector potential barrier modulated by a continuum laser in monolayer phosphorene is studied theoretically in the ballistic regime along the line of Floquet formalism. Laser free transmission profile displays strong directional behavior exhibiting collimation depending on the incident energy and width of the barrier. However, the application of laser, polarized along the zig-zag direction, creates a sharp anti-resonance in the transmission spectrum and reveals a strong light matter interaction due to broken symmetry in presence of the magnetic vector poten…
We investigate a photonic device consisting of two coupled optical cavities possessing Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, TE-TM splitting, and linear polarisation splitting that opens a tuneable energy gap at the diabolic points of the photon dispersion; giving rise to an actively addressable local Berry curvature. The proposed architecture stems from recent advancements in the design of artificial photonic gauge fields in liquid crystal cavities [K. Rechcińska et al., Science 366, 727 (2019)]. Our study opens new perspectives for topological photonics, room-temperature spinoptronics, and…
Black phosphorus (BP) is a two-dimensional layered material composed of phosphorus atoms. Recently, it was demonstrated that external perturbations such as an electric field close the band gap in few-layer BP, and can even induce a band inversion, resulting in an insulator phase with a finite energy gap or a Dirac semimetal phase characterized by two separate Dirac nodes. At the transition between the two phases, a semi-Dirac state appears in which energy disperses linearly along one direction and quadratically along the other. In this work, we study the optical conductivity of few-layer BP us…
We propose and evaluate the heterostructure based on the graphene-layer (GL) with the lateral electron injection from the side contacts and the hole vertical injection via the black phosphorus layer (PL) (p$^+$PL-PL-GL heterostructure). Due to a relatively small energy of the holes injected from the PL into the GL (about 100 meV, smaller than the energy of optical phonons in the GL which is about 200 meV), the hole injection can effectively cool down the two-dimensional electron-hole plasma in the GL. This simplifies the realization of the interband population inversion and the achievement of …
We determine the optical response of ultrathin film topological insulators in the presence of a quantizing external magnetic field taking into account both hybridization between surface states, broken inversion symmetry and explicit time reversal symmetry breaking by the magnetic field. We find that breaking of inversion symmetry in the system, which can be due to interaction with a substrate or electrical gating, results in Landau level crossings which lead to additional optical transition channels that were previously forbidden. We show that by tuning the hybridization and symmetry breaking …
We analyze an unconventional inter-subband paired phase in a 2D doped superconductor considering both systems with the inversion symmetry and with the inversion symmetry broken. We find that for a centro-symmetric system the inter-subband pairing can appear in the high concentration regime when the repulsive Coulomb interaction leads to the nearly degenerate symmetric and antisymmetric state. We discuss in detail the mutual competition between the intra- and inter-subband paired phase. For systems with broken inversion symmetry, we find that the critical temperature has a characteristic domeli…
Whereas the concept of topological band-structures was developed originally for insulators with a bulk bandgap, it has become increasingly clear that the prime consequences of a non-trivial topology -- spin-momentum locking of surface states -- can also be encountered in gapless systems. Concentrating on the paradigmatic example of mercury chalcogenides HgX (X = Te, Se, S), we show that the existence of helical semimetals, i.e. semimetals with topological surface states, critically depends on the presence of crystal inversion symmetry. An infinitesimally small broken inversion symmetry (BIS) r…
With the two-band continuum model, we study the broken inversion and time-reversal symmetry state of electrons with finite-range repulsive interactions in bilayer graphene. With the analytical solution to the mean-field Hamiltonian, we obtain the electronic spectra. The ground state is gapped. In the presence of the magnetic field $B$, the energy gap grows with increasing $B$, in excellently agreement with the experimental observation. Such an energy gap behavior originates from the disappearance of a Landau level of $n$ = 0 and 1 states. The present result resolves explicitly the puzzle of th…
In this Letter, a tunable valley polarization is investigated for honeycomb systems with broken inversion symmetry such as transition-metal dichalcogenide MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) monolayers through elliptical pumping. As compared to circular pumping, elliptical pumping is more universal and effective method to create coherent valley polarization. When two valleys of MX2 monolayers are doped or polarized, a novel anomalous valley orbital magnetic moment Hall effect driven by opposite Berry curvatures at different valleys is predicted and can generate orbital magnetic moment current without t…
We report on experimental evidence of directed electron transport, induced by external linear-polarized microwave irradiation, in a two-dimensional spatially-periodic asymmetrical system called ratchet. The broken spatial symmetry was introduced in a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas based on AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction, by patterning an array of artificial semi-discs-shaped antidots. We show that the direction of the transport is efficiently changed by microwave polarization. The dependence of the effect on magnetic field and temperature is investigated. This represents a significant …
We investigate a magnetic proximity effect on Dirac surface states of topological insulator (TI) induced by a Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuS interface, using density-functional theory (DFT) and a low-energy effective model, motivated by a recent experimental realization of the interface. We consider a thin ferromagnetic insulator EuS film stacked on top of Bi$_2$Se$_3$(111) slabs of three or five quintuple layers (QLs) with the magnetization of EuS normal to the interface ($z$ axis), which breaks both time-reversal and inversion symmetry. It is found that a charge transfer and surface relaxation makes the D…
The Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$ offers a rare opportunity to study the interplay between Weyl physics and superconductivity. Recent studies have found that Se substitution can boost the superconductivity up to 1.5K, but suppress the Td structure phase that is essential for the emergence of Weyl state. A microscopic understanding of possible coexistence of enhanced superconductivity and the Td phase has not been established so far. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a optimally doped new superconductor MoTe$_{1.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ with bulk Tc ~ 1.5K. By means of quasiparticle in…
Weyl semimetal TaAs, a congenial host to the massless Weyl fermions, spontaneously lacks the time-reversal and the inversion symmetry and thus effectuates topologically stable Weyl nodes, resembling magnetic monopoles in momentum space. Former experimental analysis had revealed that the near-zero spin-polarization of bulk TaAs experiences a boost in presence of point-contacts of non-magnetic metals along with the associated phenomena of tip-induced superconductivity, providing the impetus to study the large-area stacked interfaces of TaAs with Noble metals like Au and Ag. First-principles calc…
Symmetries play an essential role in identifying and characterizing topological states of matter. Here, we classify topologically two-dimensional (2D) insulators and semimetals with vanishing spin-orbit coupling using time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) and inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) symmetry. This allows us to link the presence of edge states in $\mathcal{I}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ symmetric 2D insulators, which are topologically trivial according to the Altland-Zirnbauer table, to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. This invariant is directly related to the quantization of the Zak phase. It also pre…
We study a Majorana-carrying quantum wire, driven into a trivial phase by breaking the spatial inversion symmetry with a tilted external magnetic field. Interestingly, we predict that a supercurrent applied in the proximate superconductor is able to restore the topological phase and therefore the Majorana end-states. Using Abelian bosonization, we further confirm this result in the presence of electron-electron interactions and show a profound connection of this phenomenon to the physics of a one-dimensional doped Mott-insulator. The present results have important applications in e.g., realizi…
A full description of a magnetic sample includes a correct treatment of the boundary conditions (BCs). This is in particular important in thin film systems, where even bulk properties might be modified by the properties of the boundary of the sample. We study generic ferromagnets with broken spatial inversion symmetry and derive the general micromagnetic BCs of a system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We demonstrate that the BCs require the full tensorial structure of the third-rank DMI tensor and not just the antisymmetric part, which is usually taken into account. Specifically,…
We consider a disordered topological insulator thin film placed on the top of a ferromagnetic insulator with a perpendicular exchange field $M$ and subjected to a perpendicular electric field. The presence of ferromagnetic insulator causes that bottom surface states of the topological insulator thin film become spin polarized and the electric field provides a potential difference $V$ between the two surface states, resulting in breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetry in the system. Using Kubo formalism and employing the first Born approximation as well as the self-consistent Born appr…
We consider a Weyl semimetal (WSM) with finite doping and tilt within a continuum model Hamiltonian with both broken time reversal and inversion symmetry. We calculate the absorptive part of the anomalous AC Hall conductivity as a function of photon energy ($Ω$) for both type I and type II Weyl semimetal. For a given Weyl node, changing the sign of its chirality or of its tilt changes the sign of its contribution to the absorptive Hall conductivity with no change in magnitude. For a noncentrosymmetric system we find that there are ranges of photon energies for which only the positive or only t…
Valley currents and non-local resistances of graphene nanostructures with broken inversion symmetry are considered theoretically in the linear response regime. Scattering state wave functions of electrons entering the nanostructure from the contacts represented by groups of ideal leads are calculated by solving the Lippmann- Schwinger equation and are projected onto the valley state subspaces to obtain the valley velocity fields and total valley currents in the nanostructures. In the tunneling regime when the Fermi energy is in the spectral gap around the Dirac point energy, inversion symmetry…
We consider a two level system with both a transversal and a longitudinal coupling to the electromagnetic field of a resonator. Using a polaron transformation, this Hamiltonian can be mapped onto a Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian with generalized field operators acting on the electromagnetic field in the resonator. In contrast to the usual ladder operators $a$ and $a^\dagger$, these operators exhibit a non-monotous coupling strength with respect to the number $n$ of photons in the resonator. Especially, there are roots of the coupling between qubit and resonator at certain photon numbers $n_0$. We…
We propose and analyze the heterostructure comprising a black-arsenic-phosphorus layer (b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L) and a graphene layer (GL) integrated with a light-emitting diode (LED). The integrated b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L-GL-LED heterostructure can serve as an active part of the terahertz (THz) laser using the interband radiative transitions in the GL. The feasibility of the proposed concept is enabled by the combination of relatively narrow energy gap in the b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L and the proper band alignment with the GL. The operation of the device in question is associated with the generation of the e…
An enhancement of the spin-orbit effects arising on an interface between a ferromagnet (FM) and a heavy metal (HM) is possible through the strong breaking of the structural inversion symmetry in the layered films. Here we show that the introduction of an ultrathin W interlayer between Co and Ru in Ru/Co/Ru films enables to preserve perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and simultaneously induce a large interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). We find that the Ru/Co/W/Ru films have PMA up to 0.35 nm of the nominal thickness of W (tW). The study of the spin-wave propagation in the…
With the purpose to devise a novel lasing scheme, we consider a two level system with both a transversal and longitudinal coupling to the electromagnetic field. If the longitudinal coupling is sufficiently strong, multi-photon transitions become possible. We assume furthermore that the electromagnetic environment has a spectrum with a single sharp resonance, which serves as a lasing cavity. Additionally, the electromagnetic environment should have a very broad resonance around a frequency which differs form the sharp resonance. We use the polaron transformation and derive a rate equation to de…
We study a Josephson junction involving an inversion-asymmetric Weyl semimetal in presence of time-reversal symmetric (TRS) or time-reversal symmetry broken tilt in the Weyl spectra. We reveal that both types of tilts in the Weyl nodes lead to a Josephson $0$-$π$ transition and a zero bias valley/chiral supercurrent. Strikingly, the TRS tilt gives rise to a pure valley Josephson current (VJC) and TRS broken tilt induces a pure chirality Josephson current (CJC) in this system. The VJC and CJC are the manifestation of valley symmetry broken and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry broken by the respective ti…
The topological nature of the band structure of a Weyl semimetal leads to a number of unique transport and optical properties. For example, the description of the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal and inversion symmetry, for example, requires a modification of the Maxwell equations by the axion field $θ\left( \mathbf{r},t\right) =2\mathbf{b}\cdot \mathbf{r}-2b_{0}t,$ where $2% \mathbf{b}$ is the separation in wave vector space between two Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities and $2\hslash b_{0}$ is their separation in energy. In this paper, we s…
We study a topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a quantum spin Hall insulator in two-dimensional (2D) systems with time-reversal and two-fold rotation symmetries. Contrary to the case of ordinary time-reversal invariant systems where a direct transition between two insulators is generally predicted, we find that the topological phase transition in systems with an additional two-fold rotation symmetry is mediated by an emergent stable two-dimensional Weyl semimetal phase between two insulators. Here the central role is played by the so-called space-time inversion symmetry…
One-dimensional lattices with chiral symmetry are known to possess quantized Zak phase and nontrivial topological phases. Here it is shown that quantized Zak phase and nontrivial edge states, partially protected by inversion symmetry rather than chiral symmetry, can be observed and probed in the bulk exploiting continuous-time photonic quantum walk in zig-zag waveguide arrays. Averaged beam displacement measurements can detect quantized Zak phase and non-trivial topological phases in the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with broken chiral symmetry.
Weyl semimetal is a new topological state of matter, characterized by the presence of nondegenerate band-touching nodes, separated in momentum space, in its bandstructure. Here we discuss a particular realization of a Weyl semimetal: a superlattice heterostructure, made of alternating layers of topological insulator (TI) and normal insulator (NI) material, introduced by one of us before. The Weyl node splitting is achieved most easily in this system by breaking time-reversal (TR) symmetry, for example by magnetic doping. If, however, spatial inversion (I) symmetry remains, the Weyl nodes will …
Since the lattices of ABA-stacked graphene multilayers with an even number of layers, as well as that of monolayer graphene, satisfy spatial-inversion symmetry, their electronic bands must be spin degenerate in the presence of time-inversion symmetry. In intrinsic monolayer and bilayer graphene, when symmetry is not broken by external fields, the only spin-orbit coupling present at low energy near the corner of the Brillouin zone is the Kane-Mele term, that opens a bulk energy gap but does not break the spin degeneracy of the energy bands [C. L. Kane and E. J. Mele, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 226801…
The ingredients normally required to achieve topological superconductivity (TSC) are Cooper pairing, broken inversion symmetry, and broken time-reversal symmetry. We present a theoretical exploration of the possibility of using ultra-thin films of superconducting metals as a platform for TSC. Because they necessarily break inversion symmetry when prepared on a substrate and have intrinsic Cooper pairing, they can be TSCs when time-reversal symmetry is broken by an external magnetic field. Using microscopic density functional theory calculations we show that for ultrathin Pb and $β$-Sn supercon…
We study electric polarization and nonlinear optical effects in spin systems with broken inversion symmetry. We apply strong coupling expansion to the underlying electronic Hamiltonians, and systematically derive expressions for electric polarization in spin systems that are represented in terms of spin operators. The magnon representation of the obtained electric polarization operator allows us to compute linear and nonlinear optical responses by the standard diagrammatic method. We apply our formalism to Heisenberg model with alternating coupling constants and $J_1$-$J_2$ model with inversio…
Pure spin currents carry information in quantum spintronics and could play an essential role in the next generation low-energy-consumption electronics. Here we theoretically predict that the magnetic field can induce a quantum spin current without a concomitant charge current in metals without time reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion symmetry $\mathcal{P}$ but respect the combined $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. It is governed by the magnetic moment of the Bloch states on the Fermi surface, and can be regarded as a spinful generalization of the gyrotropic magnetic effect in $\mathcal{P}$-br…
Weyl semimetals are gapless topological states of matter with broken inversion and/or time reversal symmetry, which can support unconventional responses to externally applied electrical, optical and magnetic fields. Here we report a new photogalvanic effect in type-II WSMs, MoTe2 and Mo0.9W0.1Te2, which are observed to support a circulating photocurrent when illuminated by circularly polarized light at normal incidence. This effect occurs exclusively in the inversion broken phase, where crucially we find that it is associated with a spatially varying beam profile via a new dispersive contribut…
We study the coupled dynamics of spin and charge currents in a two-dimensional electron gas in the transport diffusive regime. For systems with inversion symmetry there are established relations between the spin Hall effect, the anomalous Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect. However, in two-dimensional electron gases of semiconductors like GaAs, inversion symmetry is broken so that the standard arguments do not apply. We demonstrate that in the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling (broken structural inversion symmetry) the anomalous Hall effect, the spin Hall and inverse s…
We study translationally-invariant insulators with inversion symmetry that fall outside the established classification of topological insulators. These insulators are not required to have gapless boundary modes in the energy spectrum. However, they do exhibit protected modes in the entanglement spectrum localized on the cut between two entangled regions. Their entanglement entropy cannot be made to vanish adiabatically, and hence the insulators can be called topological. There is a direct connection between the inversion eigenvalues of the band structure and the mid-gap states in the entanglem…
Inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling lead to valley and spin Hall effect in MoS2. Because of the large valley separation in momentum space, the valley index is expected to be robust. In this paper, quantum Hall effect in MoS2 originated from Berry curvature is analyzed after review of symmetry structure and spin-orbit coupling Hamiltonian of MoS2. Finally an expression and rough calculation is given for valley and spin Hall effect.
