We propose and evaluate the heterostructure based on the graphene-layer (GL) with the lateral electron injection from the side contacts and the hole vertical injection via the black phosphorus layer (PL) (p$^+$PL-PL-GL heterostructure). Due to a relatively small energy of the holes injected from the PL into the GL (about 100 meV, smaller than the energy of optical phonons in the GL which is about 200 meV), the hole injection can effectively cool down the two-dimensional electron-hole plasma in the GL. This simplifies the realization of the interband population inversion and the achievement of the negative dynamic conductivity in the terahertz (THz) frequency range enabling the amplification of the surface plasmon modes. The later can lead to the plasmon lasing. The conversion of the plasmons into the output radiation can be used for a new types of the THz sources.
We investigate unusual surface plasmons polariton (SPP) propagation and light-matter interactions in ultrathin black phosphorus (BP) films, a 2D material that exhibits exotic electrical and physical properties due to its extremely anisotropic crystal structure. Recently, it has been speculated that the ultra-confined surface plasmons supported by BP may present various topologies of wave propagation bands, ranging from anisotropic elliptic to hyperbolic, across the mid- and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. By carefully analyzing the natural nonlocal anisotropic optical co…
We investigate the plasmons in bilayer black phosphorus (BP) with bias-driven formation of Dirac cones, by developing an effective two-band Hamiltonian that captures this electronic transition with great accuracy. We show that the appearance of the Dirac cones lead to additional linearly dispersing acoustic plasmon mode, in conjunction to the conventional plasmon. In addition, the change in the Fermi surface topology from a disc to ring or dual pockets also modifies the dielectric loss.
Black phosphorus presents a very anisotropic crystal structure, making it a potential candidate for hyperbolic plasmonics, characterized by a permittivity tensor where one of the principal components is metallic and the other dielectric. Here we demonstrate that atomically thin black phosphorus can be engineered to be a hyperbolic material operating in a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum from the entire visible spectrum to ultraviolet. With the introduction of an optical gain, a new hyperbolic region emerges in the infrared. The character of this hyperbolic plasmon depends on the int…
We study the effects of an applied in-plane uniaxial strain on the plasmon dispersions of monolayer, bilayer and double-layer phosphorene structures in the long-wavelength limit within the linear elasticity theory. In the low energy limit, these effects can be modeled through the change in the curvature of the anisotropic energy band along the armchair and zigzag directions. We derive analytical relations for the plasmon modes under uniaxial strain and show that the direction of the applied strain is important. Moreover, we observe that along the armchair direction, the changes of the plasmon …
Black phosphorus exhibits a high degree of band anisotropy. However, we found that its in-plane static screening remains relatively isotropic for momenta relevant to elastic long-range scattering processes. On the other hand, the collective electronic excitations in the system exhibit a strong anisotropy. Band non-parabolicity leads to a plasmon frequency which scales as $n^β$, where $n$ is the carrier concentration, and $β<\tfrac{1}{2}$. Screening and charge distribution in the out-of-plane direction are also studied using a non-linear Thomas-Fermi model.
Recently, it was demonstrated that a graphene/dielectric/metal configuration can support acoustic plasmons, which exhibit extreme plasmon confinement an order of magnitude higher than that of conventional graphene plasmons. Here, we investigate acoustic plasmons supported in a monolayer and multilayers of black phosphorus (BP) placed just a few nanometers above a conducting plate. In the presence of a conducting plate, the acoustic plasmon dispersion for the armchair direction is found to exhibit the characteristic linear scaling in the mid- and far-infrared regime while it largely deviates fr…
We study collective plasmon excitations and screening of disordered single- and bilayer black phosphorus beyond the low energy continuum approximation. The dynamical polarizability of phosphorene is computed using a tight-binding model that properly accounts for the band structure in a wide energy range. Electron-electron interaction is considered within the Random Phase Approximation. Damping of the plasmon modes due to different kinds of disorder, such as resonant scatterers and long-range disorder potentials, is analyzed. We further show that an electric field applied perpendicular to bilay…
We review the basic optical, electronic, optoelectronic, thermoelectric and mechanical properties of few-layer black phosphorus (BP), a layered semiconductor that can be exfoliated from bulk BP, the most stable allotrope of phosphorus. The distinguishing trait of BP is its highly anisotropic crystal structure, which leads to strong optical linear dichroism, elliptical plasmonics energy surfaces, anisotropic electronic and thermal conductivities and elasticity. We provide tutorial-like discussion of these phenomena and their theoretical models.
We study the electromagnetic response of two- and quasi-two-dimensional hyperbolic materials, on which a simple dipole source can excite a well-confined and tunable surface plasmon polariton (SPP). The analysis is based on the Green's function for an anisotropic two-dimensional surface, which nominally requires the evaluation of a two-dimensional Sommerfeld integral. We show that for the SPP contribution this integral can be evaluated efficiently in a mixed continuous-discrete form as a continuous spectrum contribution (branch cut integral) of a residue term, in distinction to the isotropic ca…
We predict a new mechanism of surface plasmon amplification in graphene-insulator-graphene van der Waals heterostructures. The amplification occurs upon the stimulated interlayer electron tunneling accompanied by the emission of a coherent plasmon. The quantum-mechanical calculations of the non-local high-frequency tunnel conductivity show that a relative smallness of the tunneling exponent can be compensated by a strong resonance due to the enhanced tunneling between electron states with collinear momenta in the neighboring graphene layers. With the optimal selection of the barrier layer, the…
We study the optical properties of double-layer graphene for linearly polarized evanescent modes and discuss the in-phase and out-of-phase plasmon modes for both, longitudinal and transverse polarization. We find a energy for which reflection is zero, leading to exponentially amplified transmitted modes similar to what happens in left-handed materials. For layers with equal densities $n=10^{12}$cm$^{-2}$, we find a typical layer separation of $d\approx500μ$m to detect this amplification for transverse polarization which may serve as an indirect observation of transverse plasmons. When the two …

Here, we investigate the nonreciprocal propagation and amplification of surface plasmons in drift-current biased graphene, using both Galilean and relativistic-type Doppler shift transformations of the graphene's conductivity. Consistent with previous studies, both conductivity models predict strongly nonreciprocal propagation of surface plasmons due to the drag effect caused by the drifting electrons. In particular, the Galilean Doppler shift model leads to stronger spectral asymmetries in the plasmon dispersion with regimes of unidirectional propagation. Remarkably, it is shown that both con…
We study theoretically and numerically spasing conditions and optical dynamics of a composite hyperbolic metamaterial interacting with gain molecules. By combining Maxwell-Bloch equations with Green's function approach, we calculate lasing frequency and threshold population inversion for various gain density in the gain layer. We demonstrate high level of enhancement for photonic density of states in spacious spectral range provided by hyperbolic metastructures. We find that direct dipole-dipole interactions between molecules in the gain layer has a negligible effect on spasing conditions. We …
We report strong amplification of photo-magnetic spin precession in Co-doped YIG employing a surface plasmon excitation in a metal-dielectric magneto-plasmonic crystal. Plasmonic enhancement is accompanied by the localization of the excitation within the 300~nm-thick layer inside the transparent dielectric garnet. Experimental results are nicely reproduced by numerical simulations of the photo-magnetic excitation. Our findings demonstrate the magneto-plasmonic concept of subwavelength localization and amplification of the photo-magnetic excitation in dielectric YIG:Co and open up a path to all…
A novel type of spaser with the net amplification of surface plasmons (SPs) in doped graphene nanoribbon is proposed. The plasmons in THz region can be generated in a dopped graphene nanoribbon due to nonradiative excitation by emitters like two level quantum dots located along a graphene nanoribbon. The minimal population inversion per unit area, needed for the net amplification of SPs in a doped graphene nanoribbon is obtained. The dependence of the minimal population inversion on the surface plasmon wavevector, graphene nanoribbon width, doping and damping parameters necessary for the ampli…
We show that plasmons in two-dimensional graphene can have net gain at terahertz frequencies. The coupling of the plasmons to interband electron-hole transitions in population inverted graphene layers can lead to plasmon amplification through the process of stimulated emission. We calculate plasmon gain for different electron-hole densities and temperatures and show that the gain values can exceed $10^{4}$ cm$^{-1}$ in the 1-10 terahertz frequency range, for electron-hole densities in the $10^{9}$-$10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$ range, even when plasmon energy loss due to intraband scattering is considere…
We study cooperative effects in energy transfer (ET) from an ensemble of donors to an acceptor near a plasmonic nanostructure. We demonstrate that in cooperative regime ET takes place from plasmonic superradiant and subradiant states rather than from individual donors leading to a significant increase of ET efficiency. The cooperative amplification of ET relies on the large coupling of superradiant states to external fields and on the slow decay rate of subradiant states. We show that superradiant and subradiant ET mechanisms are efficient in different energy domains and therefore can be utili…
The exchange effect and the magneto-plasmon mode dispersion are studied theoretically for an anisotropic two-dimensional electronic system in the presence of an uniform perpendicular magnetic field. Employing an effective low-energy model with anisotropic effective masses, which is relevant for a monolayer of phosphorus, the exchange effect due to the electron-electron interaction is treated within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. The magneto-plasmon mode dispersion is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salpeter equation for the electron density-density correlation function within the …
Hyperbolic polaritons exhibit large photonic density of states and can be collimated in certain propagation directions. The majority of hyperbolic polaritons are sustained in man-made metamaterials. However, natural-occurring hyperbolic materials also exist. Particularly, natural in-plane hyperbolic polaritons in layered materials have been demonstrated in MoO3 and WTe2, which are based on phonon and plasmon resonances respectively. Here, by determining the anisotropic optical conductivity (dielectric function) through optical spectroscopy, we predict that monolayer black phosphorus naturally …
We show that net amplification of surface plasmons is achieved in channel in a metal plate due to nonradiative excitation by quantum dots. This makes possible lossless plasmon transmission lines in the channel as well as the amplification and generation of coherent surface plasmons. As an example, a ring channel spaser is considered.
We have calculated numerically electron exchange, correlation energies and dynamical polarization function for newly discovered silicene, germanene and black phosphorus (BP), consisting of puckered layers of elemental phosphorus atoms, broadening the range of two-dimensional (2D) materials at various temperatures. As a matter of fact, monolayer BP, produced by mechanical and liquid exfoliation techniques, has been predicted to be an insulator with a large energy splitting 1.6 eV for the quasiparticle band structure. We compare the dependence of these energies on the chemical potential, field-i…
Screening in reduced dimensions has strong consequences on the electronic properties in van der Waals semiconductors, impacting the quasiparticle band gap and exciton binding energy. Screening in these materials is typically treated isotropically, yet black phosphorus exhibits in-plane electronic anisotropy seen in its effective mass, carrier mobility, excitonic wavefunctions, and plasmonic dispersion. Here, we use the adsorption of individual potassium atoms on the surface of black phosphorus to vary the near-surface doping over a wide range, while simultaneously probing the dielectric screen…
Plasmon oscillations have been intensively studied for more than forty years in conventional two-dimensional electron gas systems in order to find new alternatives to the vacuum devices based on the Smith-Purcell effect in the far-infrared region. However, beside the multiple endeavors, up to date, the plasmon generation in semiconductor heterostructures has been very inefficient. Here we demonstrate that the use of high mobility graphene metamaterials, due to their well-known stronger light-plasmon coupling compared to semiconductor materials can significantly improve the efficiency of far-in…
We theoretically investigate charged collective modes in a two-dimensional conductor with hot electrons where the instantaneous mode frequencies gradually increase or decrease with time. We show that the loss compensation or even amplification of the modes may occur. We apply our theory to two types of collective modes in graphene, the plasmons and the energy waves, which can be probed in optical pump-probe experiments.
We report on experimental studies of terahertz (THz) radiation transmission through grating-gate graphene-channel transistor nanostructures and demonstrate room temperature THz radiation amplification stimulated by current-driven plasmon excitations. Specifically, with increase of the direct current (dc) under periodic charge density modulation, we observe a strong red shift of the resonant THz plasmon absorption, its complete bleaching, followed by the amplification and blue shift of the resonant plasmon frequency. Our results are, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental observat…
We examine the electronic properties of 2D electron gas in black phosphorus multilayers in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, highlighting the role of in-plane anisotropy on various experimental quantities such as ac magneto-conductivity, screening, and magneto-plasmons. We find that resonant structures in the ac conductivity exhibits a red-shift with increasing doping due to inter-band coupling, $γ$. This arises from an extra correction term in the Landau energy spectrum proportional to $n^2γ^2$ ($n$ is Landau index), up to second order in $γ$. We found also that Coulomb interact…
Layered and two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs), and black phosphorus (BP) have intriguing fundamental physical properties and bear promise of numerous important applications in electronics and optics. Of them, BP is a novel 2D material that has been theoretically predicted to acquire plasmonic behavior for frequencies below ~0.4 eV when highly doped. The electronic properties of BP are unique due to an anisotropic structure, which could strongly influence collective electronic excitations. Advantages of BP as a material for n…
In this paper we propose and discuss coherent terahertz sources based on charge density wave (plasmon) amplification in two dimensional graphene. The coupling of the plasmons to interband electron-hole transitions in population inverted graphene layers can lead to plasmon amplification through stimulated emission. Plasmon gain values in graphene can be very large due to the small group velocity of the plasmons and the strong confinement of the plasmon field in the vicinity of the graphene layer. We present a transmission line model for plasmon propagation in graphene that includes plasmon diss…
The possibility of low-energy surface plasmon amplification by optically excited excitons in small-diameter single wall carbon nanotubes is theoretically demonstrated. The nonradiative exciton-plasmon energy transfer causes the buildup of the macroscopic population numbers of coherent localized surface plasmons associated with high-intensity coherent local fields formed at nanoscale throughout the nanotube surface. These strong local fields can be used in a variety of new optoelectronic applications of carbon nanotubes, including near-field nonlinear-optical probing and sensing, optical switch…
We theoretically demonstrate that a system formed by a drift-current biased graphene sheet on a silicon carbide substrate enables loss compensation and plasmon amplification. The active response of the graphene sheet is rooted in the optical pumping of the graphene plasmons with the gain provided by the streaming current carriers. The proposed system behaves as an optical amplifier for the plasmons co-propagating with the drifting electrons and as a strong attenuator for the counter-propagating plasmons. Furthermore, we show that the feedback obtained by connecting the input and output of the …
The electronic structure and functionality of 2D materials is highly sensitive to structural morphology, opening the possibility for manipulating material properties, but also making predictable and reproducible functionality challenging. Black phosphorus (BP), a corrugated orthorhombic 2D material, has in-plane optical absorption anisotropy critical for applications such as directional photonics, plasmonics, and waveguides. Here, we use polarization-dependent photoemission electron microscopy to visualize the anisotropic optical absorption of BP with 54 nm spatial resolution. We find the edge…
We propose and analyze the heterostructure comprising a black-arsenic-phosphorus layer (b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L) and a graphene layer (GL) integrated with a light-emitting diode (LED). The integrated b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L-GL-LED heterostructure can serve as an active part of the terahertz (THz) laser using the interband radiative transitions in the GL. The feasibility of the proposed concept is enabled by the combination of relatively narrow energy gap in the b-As$_{1-x}$P$_x$L and the proper band alignment with the GL. The operation of the device in question is associated with the generation of the e…
The possibility of hybridizing collective electronic motion with mid-infrared (mid-IR) light to form surface polaritons has made van der Waals layered materials a versatile platform for extreme light confinement and tailored nanophotonics. Graphene and its heterostructures have attracted particular attention because the absence of an energy gap allows for plasmon polaritons to be continuously tuned. Here, we introduce black phosphorus (BP) as a promising new material in surface polaritonics that features key advantages for ultrafast switching. Unlike graphene, BP is a van der Waals bonded semi…
Graphene supports strongly confined transverse-magnetic sheet plasmons whose spectral characteristics depend on the energetic distribution of Dirac particles. The question arises whether plasmons can become amplified when graphene is pumped into a state of inversion. In establishing a theory for the dynamic non-equilibrium polarizability, we are able to determine the exact complex-frequency plasmon dispersion of photo-inverted graphene and study the impact of doping, collision loss, and temperature on the plasmon gain. We calculate the spontaneous emission spectra and carrier recombination rat…
Coulomb interaction and its screening play an important role in many physical phenomena of materials ranging from optical properties to many-body effects including superconductivity. Here, we report on a systematic study of dielectric screening in few-layer black phosphorus (BP), a two-dimensional material with promising electronic and optical characteristics. We use a combination of a tight-binding model and rigorously determined bare Coulomb interactions, which allows us to consider relevant microscopic effects beyond the long-wavelength limit. We calculate the dielectric function of few-lay…
The radiative heat transfer between two dielectrics can be strongly enhanced in the near field in the presence of surface phonon-polariton resonances. Nevertheless, the spectral mismatch between the surface modes supported by two dissimilar materials is responsible for a dramatic reduction of the radiative heat flux they exchange. In the present paper we study how the presence of a graphene sheet, deposited on the material supporting the surface wave of lowest frequency, allows to widely tune the radiative heat transfer, producing an amplification factor going up to one order of magnitude. By …
Two-dimensional materials supporting deep-subwavelength plasmonic modes can also exhibit strong magneto-optical responses. Here, we theoretically investigate magnetoplasmons (MPs) in monolayer black phosphorus (BP) structures under moderate static magnetic fields. We consider three different structures, namely, a continuous BP monolayer, an edge formed by a semi-infinite sheet, and finally, a triangular wedge configuration. Each of these structures shows strongly anisotropic magneto-optical responses induced both by the external magnetic field and by the intrinsic anisotropy of the BP lattice.…
We theoretically demonstrate the coupling between excitons in 2D semiconductors and surface plasmons in a thin metal film by means of a surface acoustic wave (SAW), proving that the generated exciton-plasmon polaritons (or plexcitons) are in the strong coupling regime. The strain field of the SAW creates a dynamic diffraction grating providing the momentum match for the surface plasmons, whereas the piezoelectric field, that could dissociate the excitons, is cancelled out by the metal. This is exemplified for monolayer MoS$\mathrm{_{2}}$ and mono- and few-layer black phosphorus on top of a thi…
We propose a concept of surface plasmon-polariton amplification in the structure comprising interface between dielectric, metal and asymmetric quantum well. Due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, mimina of dispersion relation for electrons in conduction band are shifted with respect to the maximum of dispersion dependence for holes in $Γ$-point. When energy and momentum intervals between extrema in dispersion relations of electrons and holes match dispersion relation of plasmons, indirect radiative transition can amplify the plasmons; excitation of leaky modes is forbidden due to the select…
Mechanical resonators are ubiquitous in modern information technology. With the ability to couple them to electromagnetic and plasmonic modes, they hold the promise to be the key building blocks in future quantum information technology. Graphene based resonators are of interest for technological applications due to their high resonant frequencies, multiple mechanical modes, and low mass. The tension mediated non-linear coupling between various modes of the resonator can be excited in a controllable manner. Here, we engineer a graphene resonator to have large frequency tunability at low tempera…
Plasmon coupling and hybridization in complex nanostructures constitutes a fertile playground for controlling light at the nanoscale. Here, we present a semi-analytical model to describe the emergence of hybrid plasmon modes guided along 2D nano-slits. In particular, we find two new coupled plasmonic resonances arising from symmetric and antisymmetric hybridizations of the edge plasmons of the constituent half-sheets. These give rise to an antibonding and a bonding mode, lying above and below the energy of the bare edge plasmon. Our treatment is notably generic, being able to account for slits…
Graphene-based heterostructures display a variety of phenomena that are strongly tunable by electrostatic local gates. Monolayer graphene (MLG) exhibits tunable surface plasmon polaritons, as revealed by scanning nano-infrared experiments. In bilayer graphene (BLG), an electronic gap is induced by a perpendicular displacement field. Gapped BLG is predicted to display unusual effects such as plasmon amplification and domain wall plasmons with significantly larger lifetime than MLG. Furthermore, a variety of correlated electronic phases highly sensitive to displacement fields have been observed …
We describe the process of Foerster transfer between semiconductor nanoparticles in the presence of a metal subsystem (metal nanocrystals). In the presence of metal nanocrystals, the Foerster process can become faster and more long-range. The enhancement of Foerster transfer occurs due to the effect of plasmon-assisted amplification of electric fields inside the nanoscale assembly. Simultaneously, metal nanocrystals lead to an increase of energy losses during the Foerster transfer process. We derive convenient equations for the energy transfer rates, photoluminescence intensities, and energy d…
We analyze the surface plasmons (SPs) propagating along the optically pumped single-graphene layer (SGL) and multiple-graphene layer (MGL) structures. It is shown that at sufficiently strong optical pumping when the real part of dynamic conductivity of SGL and MGL structures becomes negative in the terahertz (THz) range of frequencies due to the interband population inversion, the damping of the THz SPs can give way to their amplification. This effect can be used in graphene-based THz lasers and other devices. Due to relatively small SP group velocity, the absolute value of their absorption co…

Plasmons, quantized collective oscillations of electrons, have been observed in metals and semiconductors. Such massive electrons have been the basic ingredients of research in plasmonics and optical metamaterials.1 Also, Dirac plasmons have been observed in graphene, two-dimensional electron systems and topological insulators (TIs). A nontrivial Z2 topology of the bulk valence band leads to the emergence of massless Dirac fermions on the surface in TIs.2,3 Although Dirac plasmons can be formed through additional grating or patterning, their characteristics promise novel plasmonic metamaterial…
Electrically injected terahertz (THz) radiation sources are extremely appealing given their versatility and miniaturization potential, opening the venue for integrated-circuit THz technology. In this work, we show that coherent THz frequency combs in the range $0.5~\mathrm{THz}<ω/2π<10~\mathrm{THz}$ can be generated making use of graphene plasmonics. Our setup consists of a graphene field-effect transistor with asymmetric boundary conditions, with the radiation originating from a plasmonic instability that can be controlled by direct current injection. We put forward a combined analytical and …
