The electronic structure and functionality of 2D materials is highly sensitive to structural morphology, opening the possibility for manipulating material properties, but also making predictable and reproducible functionality challenging. Black phosphorus (BP), a corrugated orthorhombic 2D material, has in-plane optical absorption anisotropy critical for applications such as directional photonics, plasmonics, and waveguides. Here, we use polarization-dependent photoemission electron microscopy to visualize the anisotropic optical absorption of BP with 54 nm spatial resolution. We find the edges of BP flakes have a shift in their optical polarization anisotropy from the flake interior due to the 1D confinement and symmetry reduction at flake edges that alter the electronic charge distributions and transition dipole moments of edge electronic states, confirmed with first-principles calculations. These results uncover previously hidden modification of the polarization-dependent absorbance at the edges of BP, highlighting the opportunity for selective excitation of edge states of 2D materials with polarized light.
Anisotropy describes the directional dependence of a material's properties such as transport and optical response. In conventional bulk materials, anisotropy is intrinsically related to the crystal structure, and thus not tunable by the gating techniques used in modern electronics. Here we show that, in bilayer black phosphorus with an interlayer twist angle of 90°, the anisotropy of its electronic structure and optical transitions is tunable by gating. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that a laboratory-accessible gate voltage can induce a hole effective mass that is 30 times la…
Two-dimensional crystals are emerging materials for nanoelectronics. Development of the field requires candidate systems with both a high carrier mobility and, in contrast to graphene, a sufficiently large electronic bandgap. Here we present a detailed theoretical investigation of the atomic and electronic structure of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) in order to predict its electrical and optical properties. This system has a direct bandgap, tunable from 1.51 eV for a monolayer to 0.59 eV for a 5-layer sample. We predict that the mobilities are hole-dominated, rather high and highly anisotropi…
Black phosphorus exhibits a high degree of band anisotropy. However, we found that its in-plane static screening remains relatively isotropic for momenta relevant to elastic long-range scattering processes. On the other hand, the collective electronic excitations in the system exhibit a strong anisotropy. Band non-parabolicity leads to a plasmon frequency which scales as $n^β$, where $n$ is the carrier concentration, and $β<\tfrac{1}{2}$. Screening and charge distribution in the out-of-plane direction are also studied using a non-linear Thomas-Fermi model.
The dressed states arising from the interaction between electrons and holes, and off-resonant electromagnetic radiation have been investigated for recently fabricated gapped and anisotropic black phosphorus. Our calculations were carried out for the low-energy electronic subbands near the $Γ$ point. States for both linear and circular polarizations of the incoming radiation have been computed. However, our principal emphasis is on linearly polarized light with arbitrary polarization since this case has not been given much attention for dressing fields imposed on anisotropic structures. We have…

Dynamical evolution of photo excited carriers and its induced change of transient electronic properties are critical for materials' high field performance, but remains to be explored for black phosphorus. In this work, we perform angle resolved transient reflection spectroscopy to study the dynamical evolution of anisotropic properties of black phosphorus under photo excitation. We find…
Few layer black phosphorus is a new two-dimensional material which is of great interest for applications, mainly in electronics. However, its lack of stability severely limits our ability to synthesise and process this material. Here we demonstrate that high-quality, few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets can be produced in large quantities by liquid phase exfoliation in the solvent N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (CHP). We can control nanosheet dimensions and have developed metrics to estimate both nanosheet size and thickness spectroscopically. When exfoliated in CHP, the nanosheets are remarkably…
We implement the molecular beam epitaxy method to embed the black-phosphorus-like bismuth nanosheets into the bulk ferromagnet Cr$_2$Te$_3$. As a typical surfactant, bismuth lowers the surface tensions and mediates the layer-by-layer growth of Cr$_2$Te$_3$. Meanwhile, the bismuth atoms precipitate into black-phosphorus-like nanosheets with the lateral size of several tens of nanometers. In Cr$_2$Te$_3$ embedded with Bi-nanosheets, we observe simultaneously a large topological Hall effect together with the magnetic susceptibility plateau and magnetoresistivity anomaly. As a control experiment, …
Black phosphorus has been revisited recently as a new two-dimensional material showing potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Here we report the anisotropic in-plane thermal conductivity of suspended few-layer black phosphorus measured by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The armchair and zigzag thermal conductivities are ~20 and ~40 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for black phosphorus films thicker than 15 nm, respectively, and decrease to ~10 and ~20 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ as the film thickness is reduced, exhibiting significant anisotropy. The thermal conductivity anisotropic ratio is found to…
Nickel nanoparticles were dispersed on the surface of exfoliated black phosphorus and the resulting nanohybrid Ni/2DBP showed an improved stability respect to pristine 2D BP when kept in ambient conditions in the darkness. Ni/2DBP was applied as catalyst in the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene and exhibited high conversion and selectivity towards styrene. These features were preserved after recycling tests revealing the high stability of the nanohybrid.
Few-layer black phosphorus was recently rediscovered as a narrow-bandgap atomically thin semiconductor and has already attracted unprecedented attention due to its interesting properties. One feature of this material that sets it apart from other atomically thin crystals is its structural in-plane anisotropy which manifests in strongly anisotropic transport characteristics. However, traditional angle-resolved conductance measurements present a challenge for nanoscale systems such as black phosphorus, calling for new approaches in precision studies of transport anisotropy. Here we show that the…
Black phosphorus (P) has emerged as a layered semiconductor with a unique crystal structure featuring corrugated atomic layers and strong in-plane anisotropy in its physical properties. Here, we demonstrate that the crystal orientation and mechanical anisotropy in free-standing black P thin layers can be precisely determined by spatially resolved multimode nanomechanical resonances. This offers a new means for resolving important crystal orientation and anisotropy in black P device platforms in situ beyond conventional optical and electrical calibration techniques. Furthermore, we show that el…
Black phosphorus (P), a layered material that can be isolated down to individual 2D crystalline sheets, exhibits highly anisotropic mechanical properties due to its corrugated crystal structure in each atomic layer, which are intriguing for 2D nanomechanical devices. Here we lay the framework for describing the mechanical resonant responses in free-standing black P structures, by using a combination of analytical modeling and numerical simulation. We find that thicker devices (>100nm) operating in the elastic plate regime exhibit pronounced signatures of mechanical anisotropy, and can lead to …
We experimentally determine the lattice dynamics of black phosphorus layered crystals through a combination of x-ray diffuse scattering and inelastic x-ray scattering, and we rationalize our experimental findings using $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations. From the phonon dispersions at terahertz frequencies, we derive the full single-crystal elastic tensor and relate it to the macroscopic elastic response of black phosphorus, described by the elastic moduli. The elastic stiffness coefficients obtained here provide an important benchmark for models of black phosphorus and related materials, such …
We investigate theoretically the effects of modulated periodic perpendicular magnetic fields on the electronic states and optical absorption spectrum in a monolayer black phosphorus (phosphorene). We demonstrate that different phosphorene magnetic superlattice (PMS) orientations can give rise to distinct energy spectra, i.e., tuning the intrinsic electronic anisotropy. The Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) will develop a spin-splitting energy dispersion in this phosphorene magnetic supperlattice. Anisotropic momentum-dependent carrier distributions along/perpendicular to the magnetic strips ar…
We report on experimental demonstration of a new type of nanoelectromechanical resonators based on black phosphorus crystals. Facilitated by a highly efficient dry transfer technique, crystalline black phosphorus flakes are harnessed to enable drumhead resonators vibrating at high and very high frequencies (HF and VHF bands, up to ~100MHz). We investigate the resonant vibrational responses from the black phosphorus crystals by devising both electrical and optical excitation schemes, in addition to measuring the undriven thermomechanical motions in these suspended nanostructures. Flakes with th…
As a high mobility two-dimensional semiconductor with strong structural and electronic anisotropy, atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) provides a new playground for investigating the quantum Hall (QH) effect, including outstanding questions such as the functional dependence of Landau level (LL) gaps on magnetic field B, and possible anisotropic fractional QH states. Using encapsulating few-layer BP transistors with mobility up to 55,000 cm2/Vs, we extract LL gaps over an exceptionally wide range of B for QH states at filling factors ν=-1 to -4, which are determined to be linear in B, thus re…
This work reports the measurement of electron $g$ factor anisotropy ($| Δg |$ = $| g_{001} - g_{1 \bar 1 0} |$) for phosphorous donor qubits in strained silicon (sSi = Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$) environments. Multi-million-atom tight-binding simulations are performed to understand the measured decrease in $| Δg |$ as a function of $x$, which is attributed to a reduction in the interface-related anisotropy. For $x <$7\%, the variation in $| Δg |$ is linear and can be described by $η_x x$, where $η_x \approx$1.62$\times$ 10$^{-3}$. At $x$=20\%, the measured $| Δg |$ is 1.2 $\pm$ 0.04 $\times$ 10$^{-3}…
Artificial semiconductor heterostructures played a pivotal role in modern electronic and photonic technologies, providing a highly effective mean for the manipulation and control of carriers, from the visible to the far-infrared. Despite the exceptional versatility, they commonly require challenging epitaxial growth procedures due to the need of clean and abrupt interfaces, which proved to be a major obstacle for the realization of room-temperature (RT), high-efficiency devices, like source, detectors or modulators. The discovery of graphene and the related fascinating capabilities have trigge…

We have developed nano-scale double-gated field-effect-transistors for the study of electron states and transport properties of single deliberately-implanted phosphorus donors. The devices provide a high-level of control of key parameters required for potential applications in nanoelectronics. For the donors, we resolve transitions corresponding to two charge states successively occupied by spin down and spin up electrons. The charging energies and the Lande g-factors are consistent with expectations for donors in gated nanostructures.
Black phosphorus has attracted great research interest due to its numerous applications in electronic devices, optoelectronic devices, energy storages and so on. Compared with the majority of two-dimensional materials, black phosphorus possesses a unique property, i.e. the strong in-plane anisotropy. All the properties reported so far, including its effective mass, electron mobility, light absorption, thermal conductivity and so on, have shown great anisotropy in the basal plane. This property renders black phosphorus unique applications not achievable with other two-dimensional materials. In …
The phosphorus-doped single wall carbon nanotube (PSWCNT) is studied by using First-Principle methods based on Density Function Theory (DFT). The formation energy, total energy, band structure, geometry structure and density of states are calculated. It is found that the formation energy of the P-doped single carbon nanotubes increases with diameters; the total energy of carbon nanotubes with the same diameter decreases as the doping rate increases. The effects of impurity position on the im-purity level are discussed. It illustrates that the position of the impurity level may depend on the C-…
We explore the use of Si3N4/Si substrates as a substitute of the standard SiO2/Si substrates employed nowadays to fabricate nanodevices based on 2D materials. We systematically study the visibility of several 2D semiconducting materials that are attracting a great deal of interest in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics: MoS2, MoSe2, WSe2 and black phosphorus. We find that the use of Si3N4/Si substrates provides an increase of the optical contrast up to a 50%-100% and also the maximum contrast shifts towards wavelength values optimal for human eye detection, making optical identification of 2D …

In this letter, we demonstrate the optical coupling between atomically-thin BP and a 2D photonic crystal nanocavity. We employed a home-build dry transfer apparatus for placing a thi…
The electronic transport properties of Janus monolayer black arsenic phosphorus (b-AsP) nanoribbons have been investigated utilizing the tight-binding approach. The dependence of electronic structure on edge structures is systematically investigated. (1,3)nb and (3,1)nb b-AsP nanoribbons exhibit flatter edge bands than zigzag and armchair counterparts. The edge band of the armchair ones show double degeneracy. Further, the calculated results show the band gap of the zigzag ribbon with different boundary morphology is widely tunable by transverse electric field. A critical electric field can fu…
Black phosphorus is a material with an intrinsic anisotropy in electronic and optical properties due to its puckered honeycomb lattice. Optical absorption is different for incident light with linear polarization in the armchair and zigzag directions (linear dichroism). These directions are also used in the cuts of materials to create black phosphorus nanoribbons. Edges of nanoribbons usually have small reconstruction effects, with minor electronic effects. Here, we show a reconstruction of the armchair edge that introduces a new valence band, which flattens the puckered lattice and increases t…
Two-dimensional materials supporting deep-subwavelength plasmonic modes can also exhibit strong magneto-optical responses. Here, we theoretically investigate magnetoplasmons (MPs) in monolayer black phosphorus (BP) structures under moderate static magnetic fields. We consider three different structures, namely, a continuous BP monolayer, an edge formed by a semi-infinite sheet, and finally, a triangular wedge configuration. Each of these structures shows strongly anisotropic magneto-optical responses induced both by the external magnetic field and by the intrinsic anisotropy of the BP lattice.…
Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy are used to investigate the optical properties of single layer black phosphorus obtained by mechanical exfoliation of bulk crystals under an argon atmosphere. The Raman spectroscopy, performed in situ on the same flake as the photoluminescence measurements, demonstrates the single layer character of the investigated samples. The emission spectra, dominated by excitonic effects, display the expected in plane anisotropy. The emission energy depends on the type of substrate on which the flake is placed due to the different dielectric screening. …

The burgeoning interest in 2D black phosphorus (bP) contributes to expand its applications in countless fields. In the present study, 2D bP is used as a support for homogeneously dispersed palladium nanoparticles directly grown on it by a wet chemical process. EELS-STEM analysis evidences a strong interaction between palladium and P atoms of bP nanosheets. A quantitative evaluation of this interaction comes from XAS measurements that find out a very short Pd-P distance of 2.26 Å proving for the first time the existence of an unprecedented Pd-P coordination bond of covalent nature. Additionally…
We calculate the excitonic spectrum of few-layer black phosphorus by direct diagonalization of the effective mass Hamiltonian in the presence of an applied in-plane electric field. The strong attractive interaction between electrons and holes in this system allows one to investigate the Stark effect up to very high ionizing fields, including also the excited states. Our results show that the band anisotropy in black phosphorus becomes evident in the direction dependent field induced polarizability of the exciton.
We investigate the effects of a perpendicular electric field applied to multilayer phosphorene nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges. Within the context of the tight-binding model, we explore the electronic properties of these systems giving emphasis to the appearance of Dirac-like spectra, a transition that occurs when the gate density associated with the applied displacement field is greater than the critical value $n_c$. We show that the confinement properties and the screening effects in such systems play an important role on the determination of $n_c$, suggesting a scheme to determin…
We demonstrate that encapsulation of atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) by hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheets is very effective for minimizing the interface impurities induced during fabrication of BP channel material for quantum transport nanodevices. Highly stable BP nanodevices with ultrahigh mobility and controllable types are realized through depositing appropriate metal electrodes after conducting a selective etching to the BP encapsulation structure. Chromium and titanium are suitable metal electrodes for BP channels to control the transition from a p-type unipolar property to amb…
In this work, Dirac fermions have been obtained and engineered in one-dimensional (1D) zigzag phosphorus nanotubes (ZPNTs). We have performed a comprehensive first-principle computational study of the electronic properties of ZPNTs with various diameters. The results indicate that as the lattice parameter (Lc) along axial direction increases, ZPNTs undergo transitions from metal to semimetal and semimetal to semiconductor, whereas Dirac fermions appear at Lc ranging from 3.90Å to 4.10Å. In particular, a field effect transistor (FET) based on a 12-ZPNT (with 12 unit cells in transverse directio…
We examine the electronic properties of 2D electron gas in black phosphorus multilayers in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, highlighting the role of in-plane anisotropy on various experimental quantities such as ac magneto-conductivity, screening, and magneto-plasmons. We find that resonant structures in the ac conductivity exhibits a red-shift with increasing doping due to inter-band coupling, $γ$. This arises from an extra correction term in the Landau energy spectrum proportional to $n^2γ^2$ ($n$ is Landau index), up to second order in $γ$. We found also that Coulomb interact…

Of them, BP is a novel 2D material that has been theoretically predicted to acquire plasmonic behavior for frequencies below ~0.4 eV when highly doped. The electronic properties of BP are unique due to an anisotropic structure, which could strongly influence collective electronic excitations. Advantages of BP as a material for n…
We examine the nature of topological currents in black phosphorus when its inversion symmetry is deliberately broken. Here, the conduction and valence band edges are located at the $Γ$ point of the rectangular Brillouin zone, and they exhibit strong anisotropy along its two crystal axes. We will show below that these salient features lead to a linear transverse neutral topological currents, accompanied also by a non-linear transverse charge current at the Fermi surface. These topological currents are maximal when the in-plane electric field is applied along the zigzag crystal axes, but zero al…
Hybrid materials, containing a 2D filler embedded in a polymeric matrix, are an interesting platform for several applications, because of the variety of properties that the filler can impart to the polymer matrix when dispersed at the nanoscale. Moreover, novel properties could arise from the interaction between the two. Mostly the bulk properties of these materials have been studied so far, especially focusing on how the filler changes the polymeric matrix properties. Here we propose a complete change of perspective by using the hybrid nanocomposite material as a platform suitable to engineer…

Quantum wells constitute one of the most important classes of devices in the study of 2D systems. In a double layer QW, the additional "which-layer" degree of freedom gives rise to celebrated phenomena such as Coulomb drag, Hall drag and exciton condensation. Here we demonstrate facile formation of wide QWs in few-layer black phosphorus devices that host double layers of charge carriers. In contrast to tradition QWs, each 2D layer is ambipolar, and can be tuned into n-doped, p-doped or intrinsic regimes. Fully spin-polarized quantum Hall states are observed on each layer, with enhanced Lande g…
The carrier mobility of anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors under longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon scattering was theoretically studied with the deformation potential theory. Based on Boltzmann equation with relaxation time approximation, an analytic formula of intrinsic anisotropic mobility was deduced, which shows that the influence of effective mass to the mobility anisotropy is larger than that of deformation potential constant and elastic modulus. Parameters were collected for various anisotropic 2D materials (black phosphorus, Hittorf's phosphorus, BC$_2$N, MXene, TiS$_3$, G…
Screening in reduced dimensions has strong consequences on the electronic properties in van der Waals semiconductors, impacting the quasiparticle band gap and exciton binding energy. Screening in these materials is typically treated isotropically, yet black phosphorus exhibits in-plane electronic anisotropy seen in its effective mass, carrier mobility, excitonic wavefunctions, and plasmonic dispersion. Here, we use the adsorption of individual potassium atoms on the surface of black phosphorus to vary the near-surface doping over a wide range, while simultaneously probing the dielectric screen…
This work presents theoretical demonstration of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in monolayer phosphorene nanorings (PNR). Atomistic quantum transport simulations of PNR are employed to investigate the impact of multiple modulation sources on the sample conductance. In presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, we find that the conductance of both armchair and zigzag PNR oscillate periodically in a low-energy window as a manifestation of the AB effect. Our numerical results have revealed a giant magnetoresistance (MR) in zigzag PNR (with a maximum magnitude approaching two thousand percent). It is a…
Hyperbolic polaritons exhibit large photonic density of states and can be collimated in certain propagation directions. The majority of hyperbolic polaritons are sustained in man-made metamaterials. However, natural-occurring hyperbolic materials also exist. Particularly, natural in-plane hyperbolic polaritons in layered materials have been demonstrated in MoO3 and WTe2, which are based on phonon and plasmon resonances respectively. Here, by determining the anisotropic optical conductivity (dielectric function) through optical spectroscopy, we predict that monolayer black phosphorus naturally …
We study the electronic and optical properties of single- and bilayer black phosphorus with shortand long-range defects by using the tight-binding propagation method. Both types of defect states are localized and induce a strong scattering of conduction states reducing significantly the charge carrier mobility. In contrast to properties of pristine samples, the anisotropy of defect-induced optical excitations is suppressed due to the isotropic nature of the defects. We also investigate the Landau level spectrum and magneto-optical conductivity, and find that the discrete Landau levels are subl…
The recent isolation of atomically thin black phosphorus by mechanical exfoliation of bulk layered crystals has triggered an unprecedented interest, even higher than that raised by the first works on graphene and other two-dimensional, in the nanoscience and nanotechnology community. In this Perspective we critically analyze the reasons behind the surge of experimental and theoretical works on this novel two-dimensional material. We believe that the fact that black phosphorus band gap value spans over a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum that was not covered by any other two-dimensiona…
Few layer phosphorene(FLP) devices are extensively studied due to its unique electronic properties and potential applications on nano-electronics . Here we present magnetotransport studies which reveal electron-electron interactions as the dominant scattering mechanism in hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulated FLP devices. From weak localization measurements, we estimate the electron dephasing length to be 30 to 100 nm at low temperatures, which exhibits a strong dependence on carrier density n and a power-law dependence on temperature (~T-0.4). These results establish that the dominant scatteri…

We find that the structural features of 2D phosphorus oxides PxOy vary with the oxygen concentration. When the oxygen content is poor, the most stable 2D PxOy can be obtained by adsorbing O atoms on phosphorene. However, when the oxygen concentration …
Black phosphorus (bP) has been recently investigated for next generation nanoelectronic multifunctional devices. However, the intrinsic instability of exfoliated bP (the bP nanoflakes) towards both moisture and air has so far overshadowed its practical implementation. In order to contribute to fill this gap, we report here the preparation of new hybrid polymer-based materials where bP nanoflakes exhibit a significantly improved stability. The new materials have been prepared by different synthetic paths including: i) the mixing of conventionally liquid-phase exfoliated bP (in DMSO) with PMMA s…
Resistivity measurements of a few-layer black phosphorus (bP) crystal in parallel magnetic fields up to 45 T are reported as a function of the angle between the in-plane field and the source-drain (S-D) axis of the device. The crystallographic directions of the bP crystal were determined by Raman spectroscopy, with the zigzag axis found within 5° of the S-D axis, and the armchair axis in the orthogonal planar direction. A transverse magneto-resistance (TMR) as well as a classically-forbidden longitudinal magneto-resistance (LMR) are observed. Both are found to be strongly anisotropic and non-m…
We have identified an unusually stable helical coil allotrope of phosphorus. Our ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations indicate that the uncoiled, isolated straight 1D chain is equally stable as a monolayer of black phosphorus dubbed phosphorene. The coiling tendency and the attraction between adjacent coil segments add an extra stabilization energy of about 12 meV/atom to the coil allotrope, similar in value to the approximately 16 meV/atom inter-layer attraction in bulk black phosphorus. Thus, the helical coil structure is essentially as stable as black phosphorus, the most stable…
Recently rediscovered black phosphorus is a layered semiconductor with promising electronic and photonic properties. Dynamic control of its bandgap can enable novel device applications and allow for the exploration of new physical phenomena. However, theoretical investigations and photoemission spectroscopy experiments performed on doped black phosphorus through potassium adsorption indicate that in its few-layer form, an exceedingly large electric field in the order of several volts per nanometer is required to effectively tune its bandgap, making the direct electrical control unfeasible. Her…
The strength of light-matter interaction is of central importance in photonics and optoelectronics. For many widely studied two-dimensional semiconductors, such as MoS2, the optical absorption due to exciton resonances increases with thickness. However, here we will show, few-layer black phosphorus exhibits an opposite trend. We determine the optical conductivity of few-layer black phosphorus with thickness down to bilayer by infrared spectroscopy. On the contrary to our expectations, the frequency-integrated exciton absorption is found to be enhanced in thinner samples. Moreover, the continuu…
Anisotropic charge carrier transport in black phosphorus limited by ionized impurity scattering at finite temperature is explored theoretically. The anisotropic electronic structure enters the calculation for the polarizability (screening), the momentum relaxation time, and the mobility. For finite temperature, scattering is not limited to the Fermi surface and the polarizability is temperature dependent. The impact of screening is investigated in detail with its dependence on carrier density and temperature. Competing with the thermal excitation effects, the temperature dependence of the pola…
Synapses are functional links between neurons, through which "information" flows in the neural network. These connections vary significantly in strength, typically resulting from the intrinsic heterogeneity in their chemical and biological properties. Such heterogeneity is fundamental to the diversity of neural activities, which together with other features of the brain enables functions ranging from perception and recognition, to memory and reasoning. Realizing such heterogeneity in synaptic electronics is critical towards building artificial neural network with the potential for achieving th…
We analytically study the electronic structures and optical properties of zigzag-edged black phosphorene nanoribbons (ZPNRs) utilizing the tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian and Kubo formula. By solving the discrete Schordinger equation directly, we obtain the energy spectra and wavefunctions for a $N$-ZPNR with $N$ number of transverse zigzag atomic chains, and classify the eigenstates according to the lattice symmetry. We then obtain the optical transition selection rule of ZPNRs based on the symmetry analysis and the analytical expressions of the optical transition matrix elements. Under an inc…
