The growing demand for wireless applications and services on the one hand, and limited available radio spectrum on the other hand have made cognitive radio (CR) a promising solution for future mobile networks. It has attracted considerable attention by academia and industry since its introduction in 1999 and several relevant standards have been developed within the last decade. Cognitive radio is based on four main functions, spanning across more than one layer of OSI model. Therefore, solutions based on cognitive radio technology require cross layer (CL) designs for optimum performance. This …
This article investigates and evaluate a handover exchange scheme between two secondary users (SUs) moving in different directions across the handover region of neighbouring cell in a cognitive radio network. More specifically, this investigation compares the performance of SUs in a cellular cognitive radio network with and without channel exchange systems. The investigation shows reduced handover failure, blocking, forced and access probabilities respectively, for handover exchange scheme with buffer as compared to the other scenario.
Development of smart spectrum sensing techniques is the most important task in the design of a cognitive radio system which uses the available spectrum efficiently. The adaptive SNR estimation based energy detection technique has the dual benefit of improving the efficiency of spectrum usage by capitalizing on the underutilization of the spectrum in an adaptive and iterative fashion, as well as reducing the hardware resources leading to easy implementation on a versatile and diverse group of cognitive radio infrastructures. The use of adaptive threshold for energy detection based on SNR estima…
This work proposes a study of quality of service (QoS) in cognitive radio networks. This study is based on a stochastic optimization method called shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA). The interest of the SFLA algorithm is to guarantee a better solution in a multi-carrier context in order to satisfy the requirements of the secondary user (SU).
A recent paper by Yang et al. [1] proposed CRB-RPL as a new RPL-based routing protocol for communications in cognitive radio (CR) enabled smart grid. Essentially, CRB-RPL adopts the operation of CRB-MAC, which is a medium access control (MAC) protocol for cognitive machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, and depicts it as a network layer enhancement. CRB-RPL suffers from a number of technical flaws in terms of protocol operation and analytical aspects. The main objective of this paper is to highlight these technical flaws of CRB-RPL and provide corrections to analytical modeling.

This paper discusses opportunities for disaster management based on cognitive radio ad hoc networks. In this direction, the paper presents a novel technique for disaster detection based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The ANN is trained using backward propagation algorithm. An ANN-based spectrum sensing scheme is also presented. Finally, a service discover…
In this work, we are interested in the negotiation between several PU and several SU in a cognitive radio context by using multi-agent systems. So, we have implemented PU coalitions (CPU) and SU coalitions (CSU). We also used the multi-criteria decision (TOPSIS algorithm) to best meet the needs of SU.Management by coalitions and the aggregation technique that we have used in this context significantly reduce the number of messages exchanged in the network. Processing negotiations simultaneously by several CSU minimizes response time side SU.
Channel Bonding (CB) is a technique used to provide larger bandwidth to users. It has been applied to various networks such as wireless local area networks (WLANs), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs), and Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSNs). The implementation of CB in CRSNs needs special attention as Primary Radio (PR) nodes traffic must be protected from any harmful interference by Cognitive Radio (CR) nodes. On the other hand, CR nodes need to communicate without interruption to meet their data rate requirements. If CR nodes perform frequent channel switchi…
Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising technology to improve spectrum utilization. However, spectrum availability is uncertain which mainly depends on primary user's (PU's) behaviors. This makes it more difficult for most existing CR routing protocols to achieve high throughput in multi-channel cognitive radio networks (CRNs). Inter-session network coding and opportunistic routing can leverage the broadcast nature of the wireless channel to improve the performance for CRNs. In this paper we present a coding aware opportunistic routing protocol for multi-channel CRNs, cognitive radio opportunistic…
In this paper, we study the performance of a TCP connection over cognitive radio networks. In these networks, the network may not always be available for transmission. Also, the packets can be lost due to wireless channel impairments. We evaluate the throughput and packet retransmission timeout probability of a secondary TCP connection over an ON/OFF channel. We first assume that the ON and OFF time durations are exponential and later extend it to more general distributions. We then consider multiple TCP connections over the ON/OFF channel. We validate our theoretical models and the approximat…

Cognitive radio (CR) has emerged as a promising technology to improve spectrum utilization. Capacity analysis is very useful in investigating the ultimate performance limits for wireless networks. Meanwhile, with increasing potential future applications for the CR systems, it is necessary to explore the limitations on their capacity in a dynamic spectrum access environment. However, due to spectrum sharing in cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the capacity of the secondary network (SRN) is much more difficult to analyze than that of traditional wireless networks. To overcome this difficulty, in …
A Cognitive Radio is a type of Software-Defined Radio (SDR) that automatically detects available wireless spectrum and adjusts its physical hardware, modulation, or protocol parameters to obtain optimal throughput, latency, and range. Much of prior Cognitive Radio research and design has required expensive transceivers using licensed bands that are not openly available for use by unlicensed users. This thesis presents a low-cost hardware platform built from off-the-shelf components that utilizes free to use Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands, and implements a concurrent multi-spec…
Censoring has been proposed to be utilized in wireless distributed detection networks with a fusion center to enhance network performance in terms of error probability in addition to the well-established energy saving gains. In this paper, we further examine the employment of censoring in infrastructure-less cognitive radio networks, where nodes employ binary consensus algorithms to take global decisions regarding a binary hypothesis test without a fusion center to coordinate such a process. We show analytically - and verify by simulations - that censoring enhances the performance of such netw…
In this paper, we investigate the problem of spectrum access decision-making for the Secondary Users (SUs) in the cognitive radio networks. When the Primary Users (PUs) are absent on certain frequency bandwidth, SUs can formulate a queue and wait for the Base Station (BS) to serve. The queue of the SUs will be dismissed if the PU is emerging in the system. Leveraging the queueing game approaches, the decision-making process of the SUs that whether to queue or not is studied. Both individual equilibrium and social optimization strategies are derived analytically. Moreover, the optimal pricing s…
Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) are being studied intensively and gaining importance as spectrum is the heavily underutilized. CRN has the capability to exploit smartly the unutilized frequency spectrum. Recently, the research community started to work in the area of cognitive radio routing. In a flat topology, all nodes are of the same level and functionality, thus making it simple and efficient for smaller networks. However, when the network is large with sparse nodes, the routing information becomes more complex making cluster-based techniques really relevant to tackle such situations. In a…
In this paper, an underlay cognitive radio (CR) multicast network, consisting of a cognitive base station (CBS) and multiple multicast groups of secondary users (SUs), is considered. All SUs, belonging to a particular multicast group, are served by the CBS using a common primary user (PU) channel. The goal is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system, through dynamic adaptation of target rate and transmit power for each multicast group, under the PUs' individual interference constraints. The optimization problem formulated for this is proved to be non quasi-concave with respect to t…
Green energy powered cognitive radio (CR) network is capable of liberating the wireless access networks from spectral and energy constraints. The limitation of the spectrum is alleviated by exploiting cognitive networking in which wireless nodes sense and utilize the spare spectrum for data communications, while dependence on the traditional unsustainable energy is assuaged by adopting energy harvesting (EH) through which green energy can be harnessed to power wireless networks. Green energy powered CR increases the network availability and thus extends emerging network applications. Designing…

In order to provide higher data rates, improved end-to-end performance, low latency, and low energy consumption at a low cost per transmission, the fifth generation (5G) systems are required to overcome various handicaps of current cellular networks and wireless links. One of the key handicaps of 5G systems is the performance degradation of the communication link, due to the use of low-cost transceiver in high d…
Cognitive radio is an intelligent radio that can be programmed and configured dynamically to fully use the frequency resources that are not used by licensed users. It defines the radio devices that are capable of learning and adapting to their transmission to the external radio environment, which means it has some kind of intelligence for monitoring the radio environment, learning the environment and make smart decisions. Simulation results for limited feedback shows approximately 100 % increase in rate for primary while 300 % for secondary cell edge users with same outage in cloud over conventional cognitive radio network.
In this paper, we present a distributed resource allocation mechanism in cognitive radio networks, based on a new coopeti-tion methodology, which combines advantages of nodes competition and cooperation. We postulate that this new method allows for fully distributed resource management between cognitive radio devices. The presented framework is generic, however, we consider it for the application in OFDMA networks. Coopetition takes the best from cooperative and competitive problem formulation and provides the opportunity to control the balance between fairness and spectral efficiency (SE) of …
Cluster structure in cognitive radio networks facilitates cooperative spectrum sensing, routing and other functionalities. The unlicensed channels, which are available for every member of a group of cognitive radio users, consolidate the group into a cluster, and the availability of unlicensed channels decides the robustness of that cluster against the licensed users' influence. This paper analyses the problem that how to form robust clusters in cognitive radio network, so that more cognitive radio users can get benefits from cluster structure even when the primary users' operation are intense…
A cognitive radio system has the ability to observe and learn from the environment, adapt to the environmental conditions, and use the radio spectrum more efficiently. However, due to multipath fading, shadowing, or varying channel conditions, uncertainty affects the cognitive cycle processes, measurements, decisions, and actions. In the observing step, measurements (i.e., information) taken by the secondary users (SUs) are uncertain. In the next step, the SUs make decisions based on what has already been observed using their knowledge bases, which may have been impacted by the uncertainty, le…
