We study conservation laws for gravity theories invariant under general coordinate transformations. The class of models under consideration includes Einstein's general relativity theory as a special case as well as its generalizations to non-Riemannian spacetime geometry and nonminimal coupling. We demonstrate that an arbitrary vector field on the spacetime manifold generates a current density that is conserved under certain conditions, and find the expression of the corresponding superpotential. For a family of models including nonminimal coupling between geometry and matter, we discuss in detail the differential conservation laws and the conserved quantities defined in terms of covariant multipole moments. We show that the equations of motion for the multipole moments of extended microstructured test bodies lead to conserved quantities that are closely related to the conserved currents derived in the field-theoretic framework.
In this paper we generalize the off-shell Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) conserved charge formalism to Palatini theory of gravity with torsion and non-metricity. Our construction is based on the coordinate formalism and the independent dynamic fields are the metric and the affine connection. For a general Palatini theory of gravity, which is diffeomorphism invariant up to a boundary term, we obtain the most general expression for off-shell ADT potential. As explicit examples, we derive the off-shell ADT potentials for Einstein-Hilbert action, the most general $L(g_{μν}, R^λ{}_{ναμ}, T^λ{}_{αβ}, Q_{α…
F(R) theory of gravity is claimed to admit a host of conserved currents under the imposition of Noether symmetry following various techniques. However, for a constrained system such as gravity, Noether symmetry is not on-shell. As a result, the symmetries do not necessarily satisfy the field equations in general, constraints in particular, unless the generator is modified to incorporate the constraints. In the present manuscript, we apply the first theorem of Poisson to unveil the fact that not all the conserved currents appearing in the literature for F(R) theory of gravity, satisfy the field…
We study non-Einstein Bach-flat gravitational instanton solutions that can be regarded as the generalization of the Taub-NUT/Bolt and Eguchi-Hanson solutions of Einstein gravity to conformal gravity. These solutions include non-Einstein spaces which are either asymptotically locally flat spacetimes (ALF) or asymptotically locally Anti-de Sitter (AlAdS). Nevertheless, solutions with different asymptotic conditions exist: we find geometries that present a weakened AlAdS asymptotia, exhibiting the typical low decaying mode of conformal gravity. This permits to identify the simple Neumann boundary…
We construct conserved quantities in pure Lovelock gravity for both static and dynamic Vaydia-type black holes with AdS, dS and flat asymptotics, applying field-theoretical formalism developed earlier. Global energy (where applicable), quasi-local energy together with fluxes of these quantities are presented for both types of black holes, considering asymptotic spacetime as background. The same quantities are constructed for dynamic black holes on the background of the related static black holes. Besides, for the dynamic black holes, energy densities and densities of energy flux are calculated…
We construct a class of conserved currents for linearized gravity on a Kerr background. Our procedure, motivated by the current for scalar fields discovered by Carter (1977), is given by taking the symplectic product of solutions to the linearized Einstein equations that are defined by symmetry operators. We consider symmetry operators that are associated with separation of variables in the Teukolsky equation, as well as those arising due the self-adjoint nature of the Einstein equations. In the geometric optics limit, the charges associated with these currents reduce to sums over gravitons of…
In this paper we elevate the formalism for off-shell Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) conserved charges in the presence of arbitrary matter fields to including the internal gauge transformation, when the gauge fields are present. For this purpose, we resort to exact symmetry, and the symmetry generator is combined by diffeomorphism and internal gauge transformation. For universality, we consider an apparently non-covariant Lagrangian, which contains a matter Chern-Simons term. We show that the elevated off-shell ADT formalism is equivalent to the covariant phase space method and the Barnich-Brandt-Com…
In this work it is introduced an extension of the study of the first law of thermodynamics of black holes based on the geometry of the extended phase space for AdS Lovelock gravities which includes changes of scales. As expected, the result obtained coincides with the previously known four dimensional case. For higher dimensions, the result is the arise of two new contributions to the first law of thermodynamics. The first term corresponds to corrections of the usual definition of thermodynamics volume at the horizon, due to the presence of the higher curvature terms. The second term arises in…
In this work we consider the Einstein-Hilbert action in the first order order formalism coupled to Dirac spinors. From the little group symmetry, we derive the corresponding Bargmann-Wigner current which is conserved but not gauge invariant. Therefore, we construct a gauge invariant version of the Bargmann-Wigner current which is not conserved but potentially observable. Because it is not conserved we split this current into fermionic and gravitational sectors and derive their broken continuity equations for each sector. These equations compose the master equations governing the interaction of…
We examine various methods of constructing conserved quantities in the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR). We demonstrate that in the covariant formulation the preferred method are the Noether charges that are true invariant quantities. The Noether charges depend on the vector field $ξ$ and we consider two different options where $ξ$ is chosen as either a Killing vector or a four-velocity of the observer. We discuss the physical meaning of each choice on the example of the Schwarzschild solution in different frames: static, freely falling Lemaitre frame, and a newly obtained …
