The nonlinear magneto-plasmonics aims to utilize plasmonic excitations to control the mechanisms and taylor the efficiencies of the non-linear light frequency conversion at the nanoscale. We investigate the mechanisms of magnetic second harmonic generation in hybrid gold-cobalt-silver multilayer structures, which support propagating surface plasmon polaritons at both fundamental and second harmonic frequencies. Using magneto-optical spectroscopy in Kretschmann geometry, we show that the huge magneto-optical modulation of the second harmonic intensity is dominated by the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons at the second harmonic frequency, as shown by tuning the optical wavelength over the spectral region of strong plasmonic dispersion. Our proof-of-principle experiment highlights bright prospects of nonlinear magneto-plasmonics and contributes to the general understanding of the nonlinear optics of magnetic surfaces and interfaces.
We investigate electron spin currents induced optically via plasmonic modes in the Kretschmann configuration. By utilising the scattering matrix formalism, we take the plasmonic mode coupled to external laser drive into consideration and calculate induced magnetisation in the metal. The spatial distribution of the plasmonic mode is inherited by the induced magnetisation, which acts as inhomogeneous effective magnetic field and causes the Stern-Gerlach effect to drive electron spin currents in the metal. We solve spin diffusion equation with a source term to analyse the spin current as a functi…
Spectroscopic ellipsometry is a sensitive and optical model-supported quantitative tool to monitor interfaces. In this work, solid-liquid interfaces are studied using the Kretschmann-Raether configuration for biosensing applications. The interface layers support two purposes simultaneously: (i) chemical suitability for the adsorption of molecules to be detected and (ii) the optical enhancement of the signal to increase the sensitivity. Ellipsometry is not only used as a sensor but also as a quantitative measurement tool to study and understand the interface phenomena, and to develop the sensin…
Films of close-packed Au nanoparticles are coupled electrodynamically through their collective plasmon resonances. This collective optical response results in enhanced light-matter interactions, which can be exploited in various applications. Here, we demonstrate their application in sensing volatile organic compounds, using methanol as a test-case. Ordered films over several cm2 were obtained by interfacial self-assembly of colloidal Au nanoparticles (~10 nm diameter) through controlled evaporation of the solvent. Even though isolated nanoparticles of this size are inherently non-scattering, …
Via exploitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), columnar thin films (CTFs) are attractive potential platforms for optical sensing as their relative permittivity dyadic and porosity can be tailored to order. Nanoscale model parameters of a CTF were determined from its measured relative permittivity dyadic, after inverting the Bruggeman homogenization formalism. These model parameters were then used to determine the relative permittivity dyadic of a fluid-infiltrated CTF. Two boundary-value problems were next solved: the first relating to SPP-wave propagation guided by the planar interfac…
Engineering plasmonic metamaterials with anisotropic optical dispersion enables us to tailor the properties of metamaterial-based waveguides. We investigate plasmonic waveguides with dielectric cores and multilayer metal-dielectric claddings with hyperbolic dispersion. Without using any homogenization, we calculate the resonant eigenmodes of the finite-width cladding layers, and find agreement with the resonant features in the dispersion of the cladded waveguides. We show that at the resonant widths, the propagating modes of the waveguides are coupled to the cladding eigenmodes and hence, are …
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
We show that Fourier-plane imaging in conjunction with the Kretschmann-Raether configuration can be used for measuring polariton dispersion with spatial discrimination of the sample, over the whole visible spectral range. We demonstrate the functionality of our design on several architectures, including plasmonic waveguides, and show that our new design enables the measurement of plasmonic dispersion curves of spatially-inhomogeneous structures with features as small as 3μm, in a single shot.
We design photonic structures embedding different functional molecular systems of photochromic switching and lasing. We study the light absorption of two photochromic molecules and of 4,4'-bis[(N-carbazole)styryl]biphenyl (BSB-Cz) with density functional theory. For the photochromic diarylethene we derivate the refractive index with Kramers-Kronig relations and we design multilayer photonic structures alternating diarylethene with either poly vinyl carbazole or fluorine indium co-doped cadmium oxide (FICO) nanoparticlebased layers. For BSB-Cz we design a one-dimensional photonic crystal altern…
We design a plasmonic fiber waveguide (PFW) composed of coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers in nanoscale, and constitute the corresponding dynamical equations describing the modes of propagation in the PFW with the Kerr nonlinearity in the dielectric layers. The physics is connected to the discrete matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equations, from which the highly confined ring-like solitons in scale of subwavelength are found both for the visible light and the near-infrared light in the self-defocusing condition. Moreover, the confinement could be further improved when increasing the …
In order to maximize the transversal magneto-optic Kerr effect (T-MOKE) of a Au/Co/Au structure, we propose a method to obtain the optimum thickness values. A criteria based on preserving good plasmonic properties has been included as part of this method. Using the theoretical prediction, we grew Au/Co/Au trilayers and perform optical andMO characterization using the Kretschmann configuration. The results admit very easy interpretation in terms of the interaction between the magneto-optical and plasmonic properties dictating the optimal thicknesses of the structure. Moreover, we have grown and…
Visible surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) could be excited by TE wave polarization in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) coated by a graphene layer under the Kretschmann configuration. In this work, the plasmonic Bloch wave properties beyond Dirac points in a one-dimensional graphene-based photonic sensing structure have been numerically studied. We demonstrate that emergent plasmonic dips in the reflectance spectra of the suggested photonic device in the visible region exhibit tunable characteristics upon modulation of the chemical potential and the hopping parameter. The sensitivity of …
Nanomaterials capable of confining light are desirable for enhancing spectroscopies such as Raman scattering, infrared absorption, and nonlinear optical processes. Plasmonic superlattices have shown the ability to host collective resonances in the mid-infrared, but require stringent fabrication processes to create well-ordered structures. Here, we demonstrate how short-range-ordered Au nanoparticle multilayers on a mirror, self-assembled by a sub-nm molecular spacer, support collective plasmon-polariton resonances in the visible and infrared, continuously tunable beyond 11 $μ$m by simply varyi…
Recent experiments with film-coupled nanoparticles suggest that the impact of spatial dispersion is enhanced in plasmonic structures where high wavevector guided modes are excited. More advanced descriptions of the optical response of metals than Drude's are thus probably necessary in plasmonics. We show that even in classical prism coupler experiments, the plasmonic enhancement of spatial dispersion can be leveraged to make such experiments two orders of magnitude more sensitive. The realistic multilayered structures involved rely on layers that are thick enough to rule our any other phenomen…
The ability to tailor the porosity and optical properties of columnar thin films (CTFs) renders them promising platforms for optical sensing. In particular, surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves, guided by the planar interface of an infiltrated CTF and a thin layer of metal, may be harnessed to detect substances that penetrate the void regions in between the columns of a CTF. This scenario was investigated theoretically using a higher-order homogenization technique, based on an extended version of the second-order strong-permittivity-fluctuation theory, which takes into account the size of the…
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPP or SP) are electromagnetic waves propagating along metal dielectric interfaces and existing over a wide range of frequencies. They have become popular because of their sub-wavelength confinement and the possibility to perform ultrasensitive optical measurements. Driven by tremendous progress in nanofabrication techniques and ultrafast laser technologies the applications of SP nanooptics extend beyond the border of nanoplasmonics. Here we review how using novel hybrid multilayer structures combining different functionalities allows to develop active plasmonic dev…
We identify a route towards achieving a negative index of refraction at optical frequencies based on coupling between plasmonic waveguides that support backwards waves. We show how modal symmetry can be exploited in metal-dielectric waveguide pairs to achieve negative refraction of both phase and energy. By properly controlling coupling between adjacent waveguides, a metamaterial consisting of a one-dimensional multilayer stack exhibiting an isotropic index of -1 can be achieved at a free-space wavelength of 400 nm. The general concepts developed here may inspire new low-loss metamaterial desi…
In this letter, a plasmonic dark field microscopy taking advantages of the polymer loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (PLSPPW) is experimentally demonstrated. The dye molecules (Rhodamine 6G, Rh6G) are doped in the PLSPPW to launch the plasmonic waves or guided waves. Due to the localized property of these waves, the near-field optical energy on the surface of PLSPPW can be scattered into the far-field only in the presence of the objects. The scattering signals then form the dark-field image of the objects. The proposed technique just utilizes a chip-scale integrated plasmonic multilay…
We review the recent progress in experimental and theoretical research of interactions between the acoustic, magnetic and plasmonic transients in hybrid metal-ferromagnet multilayer structures excited by ultrashort laser pulses. The main focus is on understanding the nonlinear aspects of the acoustic dynamics in materials as well as the peculiarities in the nonlinear optical and magneto-optical response. For example, the nonlinear optical detection is illustrated in details by probing the static magneto-optical second harmonic generation in gold-cobalt-silver trilayer structures in Kretschmann…
We investigate surface modes in plasmonic Bragg fibers composed of nanostructured coaxial cylindrical metal-dielectric multilayers. We demonstrate that the existence of surface modes is determined by the sign of the spatially averaged permittivity of the plasmonic Bragg fiber, $\bar{% \varepsilon}$. Specifically, localized surface modes occur at the interface between the cylindrical core with $\bar{\varepsilon}<0$ and the outermost uniform dielectric medium, which is similar to the topologically protected plasmonic surface modes at the interface between two different one-dimensional planar met…
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is generally observed by excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on the metal (Au/Ag) surface. In order to utilize the SPR phenomenon for sensing application, the metal surface is functionalized with suitable ligands. Although such functionalization can enhance the specific adsorption capability of the sensor however due to large thickness of the ligands, the plasmonic field of the metal surface becomes less sensitive towards the adsorption of analytes. In the next generation SPR based sensor, graphene can be utilized not only as plasmonic material but also a s…
We introduce two types of toroidal metamaterials which are invisible to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating on a metal surface. The former is a toroidal handlebody bridging remote holes on the metal surface: It works as a kind of plasmonic counterpart of electromagnetic wormholes. The latter is a toroidal ring lying on the metal surface: This bridges two disconnected metal surfaces i.e. It connects a thin metal cylinder to a flat metal surface with a hole. Full-wave numerical simulations demonstrate that an electromagnetic field propagating inside these metamaterials does not disturb…
Biomimetic nanoengineered metamaterials called chiral sculptured thin films (CSTFs) are attractive platforms for optical sensing because their porosity, morphology and optical properties can be tailored to order. Furthermore, their ability to support more than one surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) wave at a planar interface with a metal offers functionality beyond that associated with conventional SPP--based sensors. An empirical model was constructed to describe SPP-wave propagation guided by the planar interface of a CSTF--infiltrated with a fluid which supposedly contains analytes to be detec…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) attract significant attention due to their exceptional optical, excitonic, mechanical, and electronic properties. Nanostructured multilayer TMDs were recently shown to be highly promising for nanophotonic applications, as motivated by their exceptionally high refractive indexes and optical anisotropy. Here, we extend this vision to more sophisticated structures, such as periodic arrays of nanodisks and nanoholes, as well as proof-of-concept waveguides and resonators. We specifically focus on various advanced nanofabrication strategies, including careful …
We discuss the potential of multilayered plasmonic particles to tailor the optical scattering response. The interplay of plasmons localized in thin stacked shells realizes peculiar degenerate cloaking and resonant states occurring at arbitrarily close frequencies. These concepts are applied to realize ultrasharp comb-like scattering responses and synthesize staggered, ideally strong super-scattering states closely coupled to invisible states. We demonstrate robustness to material losses and to variations in the background medium, properties that make these structures ideal for optical tagging.
Metallic nanostructures exhibit strong nonlinear-optical response at surface plasmon resonances, where the light-matter coupling efficiency is enhanced. An active modulation of this response can be realized by means of an external magnetic field. Here we utilize a nonlinear magneto-refractive effect in spintronic multilayer antennas to achieve a resonant 20\% modulation in second harmonic generation (SHG) in the mid-infrared. We discuss mechanisms of this modulation and show that it cannot be explained by an unequal enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the two spin states of the multila…
Surface plasmon mediated hot carrier generation is widely utilized for the manipulation of the electron-photon interactions in many types of optoelectronic devices including solar cells, photodiodes, and optical modulators. A diversity of plasmonic systems such as nanoparticles, resonators, and waveguides have been introduced to enhance hot carrier generation; however, the impact of the propagating surface plasmons on hot carrier lifetime has not been clearly demonstrated. Here, we systematically study the hot carrier relaxation in thin film gold (Au) samples under surface plasmon coupling wit…
The propagation of a surface plasmon-polariton along a stack of doped graphene sheets is considered. This auxiliary problem is used to discuss: (i) the scattering of such a mode at an interface between the stack and the vacuum; (ii) the scattering at an interface where there is a sudden change of the electronic doping. The formalism is then extended to the {\it barrier problem}. In this system rich physics is found for the plasmonic mode, showing: total reflection, total transmission, Fabry-Pérot oscillations, and coupling to photonic modes.
All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetic domains by femtosecond laser pulses was first observed in the transition metal-rare earth (TM-RE) alloy GdFeCo1-5; this phenomenon demonstrated the potential for optical control of magnetism for the development of ever faster future magnetic recording technologies. The technological potential of AOS has recently increased due to the discovery of the same effect in other materials, including RE-free magnetic multilayers6,7. However, to be technologically meaningful, AOS must compete with the bit densities of conventional storage devices, restricting optic…
In this paper, we report theoretical investigation on excitation of surface plexciton wave at interface of a metal and a columnar thin film infiltrated with J-aggregate dyes using transfer matrix method in Kretschmann configuration. The results reveal the regime of the plasmon - exciton interaction can change from weak to strong by tuning structural parameters. We find Rabi splitting energies between 204 -378 meV corresponding to the time period 11-20 fs which includes to the fast energy transfer from surface plasmon polaritons to excitons. The phase speed and propagation length of surface ple…
The n-type Ge-on-Si epitaxial material platform enables a novel paradigm for plasmonics in the mid-infrared, prompting the future development of lab-on-a-chip and subwavelength vibrational spectroscopic sensors. In order to exploit this material, through proper electrodynamic design, it is mandatory to retrieve the dielectric constants of the thin Ge epilayers with high precision due to the difference from bulk Ge crystals. Here we discuss the procedure we have employed to extract the real and imaginary part of the dielectric constants from normal incidence reflectance measurements, by combini…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) attract significant attention due to their exceptional optical and excitonic properties. It was understood already in the 1960s, and recently rediscovered, that many TMDs possess high refractive index and optical anisotropy, which make them attractive for nanophotonic applications. However, accurate analysis and predictions of nanooptical phenomena require knowledge of dielectric constants along both in- and out-of-plane directions and over a broad spectral range -- information, which is often inaccessible or incomplete. Here, we present an experimental …
We study the propagation of light in a three-dimensional double-periodic Ag/TiO2 multilayer metamaterial composed of coupled plasmonic waveguides operating in the visible and UV spectral range. For these frequencies, light propagation in the plane of the waveguides is described by a negative phase velocity, while for the orthogonal direction light propagation is described by a Bloch wave composed of a large number of harmonics. As a result, the material cannot generally be described by a single phase index: decomposing the Bloch wave into different harmonics we show that for the wavelength ran…

They exhibit intense and localized resonances that can be conveniently tuned in the near-infrared and are therefore ideal for enhancing nonlinear effects in this spectral range. In this work, we experime…
