In this letter, a plasmonic dark field microscopy taking advantages of the polymer loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (PLSPPW) is experimentally demonstrated. The dye molecules (Rhodamine 6G, Rh6G) are doped in the PLSPPW to launch the plasmonic waves or guided waves. Due to the localized property of these waves, the near-field optical energy on the surface of PLSPPW can be scattered into the far-field only in the presence of the objects. The scattering signals then form the dark-field image of the objects. The proposed technique just utilizes a chip-scale integrated plasmonic multilayered structure which is highly compatible with the conventional optical microscopy. The polymer film involved in the PLSPPW also brings about the merits of small roughness, good stability and bio-compatibility
Nanotechnology and the consequent emergence of miniaturized devices are driving the need to improve our understanding of the mechanical properties of a myriad of materials. Here we focus on amorphous polymeric materials and introduce a new way to determine the nanoscale mechanical response of polymeric thin films in the GHz range, using ultrafast optical means. Coupling of the films to plasmonic nanoantennas excited at their vibrational eigenfrequencies allows the extraction of the values of the mechanical moduli as well as the estimation of the glass transition temperature via time-domain mea…
Structured metallic tips are increasingly important for optical spectroscopies such as tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), with plasmonic resonances frequently cited as a mechanism for electric field enhancement. We probe the local optical response of sharp and spherical-tipped atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips using a scanning hyperspectral imaging technique to identify plasmonic behaviour. Localised surface plasmon resonances which radiatively couple with far-field light are found only for spherical AFM tips, with little response for sharp AFM tips, in agreement with numerical simulatio…
We demonstrate a simple scheme for high-resolution imaging of nanoplasmonic structures that basically removes most of the resolution limiting allowed light usually transmitted to the far field. This is achieved by implementing a Fourier lens in a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) operating in the leakage-radiation microscopy (LRM) mode. The method consists of reconstructing optical images solely from the plasmonic `forbidden' light collected in the Fourier space. It is demonstrated by using a point-like nanodiamond-based tip that illuminates a thin gold film patterned with a sub-wa…
We propose to enhance the performance of localized plasmon structured illumination microscopy (LP-SIM) via intensity correlations. LP-SIM uses sub-wavelength illumination patterns to encode high spatial frequency information. It can enhance the resolution up to three-fold before gaps in the OTF support arise. For blinking fluorophores or for quantum antibunching an intensity correlation analysis induces higher harmonics of the illumination pattern and enlarges the effective OTF. This enables ultrahigh resolutions without gaps in the OTF support, and thus a fully deterministic imaging scheme. W…

The field of plasmonics offers a route to control light fields with metallic nanostructures through the excitation of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs). These surface waves, bound to a metal dielectric interface, tightly confine electromagnetic energy. Active control over SPPs has potential for applications in sensing, photovoltaics, quantum communication, nano circuitry, metamaterials and super-resolution microscopy. We achieve here a new level of control of plasmonic fields using a digital spatial light modulator. Optimizing the plasmonic phases via feedback we focus SPPs at a freely pre-cho…
Metal nanostructures are key elements in nanooptics owing to their strong resonant interaction with light through local plasmonic charge oscillations. Their ability to shape light at the nanoscale have made them important across a multitude of areas, including biosensing, energy conversion and ultrathin flat metaoptics. Yet another dimension of avenues is foreseen for dynamic nanoantennas, ranging from tuneable metalenses for miniaturized medical devices to adaptable windows that control radiation flows in and out of buildings. However, enabling nano-optical antennas to be dynamically controll…
We report a new experimental technique for quantifying the angular distribution of light scattered by single plasmonic and metamaterial nanoscatterers, based on Fourier microscopy in a dark field confocal set up. This new set up is a necessary tool for quantifying the scattering properties of single plasmonic and meatamaterial building blocks, as well as small coupled clusters of such building blocks, which are expected to be the main ingredients of nano-antennas, light harvesting structures and transformation optics. We present a set of measurements on Au nanowires of different lengths and sh…
In this work, we demonstrated on-chip label-free imaging microscopy using real and Fourier Plane (FP) microscopic dark field images of Surface Plasmons (SP), excited on engineered 1D and 2D low aspect ratio periodic plasmonic nanostructures. The periodic plasmonic nanostructures with period almost equal to resonance wavelength, were engineered to exhibit transmission resonances as transmission peaks in visible spectrum at normal incidence, without using extraordinary optical transmission phenomena. The plasmonic nanostructures exhibited a polarization rotation of 90 degree mediated by differen…
Scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy enables optical imaging and characterization of plasmonic devices with nanometer-scale resolution well below the diffraction limit. This technique enables developers to probe and understand the waveguide-coupled plasmonic antenna in as-fabricated heat-assisted magnetic recording heads. In order validate and predict results and to extract information from experimental measurements that is physically comparable to simulations, a model was developed to translate the simulated electric field into expected near-field measurements using physical para…
The development of spintronic technology with increasingly dense, high-speed, and complex devices will be accelerated by accessible microscopy techniques capable of probing magnetic phenomena on picosecond time scales and at deeply sub-micron length scales. A recently developed time-resolved magneto-thermal microscope provides a path towards this goal if it is augmented with a picosecond, nanoscale heat source. We theoretically study adiabatic nanofocusing and near-field heat induction using conical gold plasmonic antennas to generate sub-100 nm thermal gradients for time-resolved magneto-ther…
Spatial modulation microscopy is a technique originally developed for quantitative spectroscopy of individual nano-objects. Here, a parallel implementation of the spatial modulation microscopy technique is demonstrated based on a line detector capable of demodulation at kHz frequencies. The capabilities of the imaging system are shown using an array of plasmonic nanoantennas and dendritic cells incubated with gold nanoparticles.
Plasmonic nanoparticles influence the absorption and emission processes of nearby emitters due to local enhancements of the illuminating radiation and the photonic density of states. Here, we use the plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles in order to enhance the stimulated depletion of excited molecules for super-resolved microscopy. We demonstrate stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy with gold nanorods with a long axis of only 26 nm and a width of 8 nm that provide an enhancement of the resolution compared to fluorescent-only probes without plasmonic components irradiated with th…
We report on the investigation of an advanced circular plasmonic nanoantenna under ultrafast excitation using nonlinear photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) under near-normal incidence. The circular nanoantenna is enhanced in its performance by a supporting grating and milled out from a gold film. The considered antenna shows a sophisticated physical resonance behavior that is ideal to demonstrate the possibilities of PEEM for the experimental investigations of plasmonic effects on the nanoscale. Field profiles of the antenna resonance for both possible linear polarizations of the incident…
Nanostructures of conventional metals offer manipulation of light at the nanoscale but are limited to static behavior due to their fixed material properties. To develop the next frontier of dynamic nanooptics and metasurfaces, we utilize the redox-tunable optical properties of conducting polymers, which were recently shown to be capable of sustaining plasmons in their most conducting oxidized state. Using nanodisks of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf) as a model system, we present the first electrically tunable conducting polymer nanooptical antennas. In addition to repeate…
We utilize experimental tools such as conductive atomic force microscopy and electrostatic force microscopy on photo-excited arrays of gold nanoparticles on indium tin oxide substrate. The nanoparticles are partially covered by a thin semiconductor polymer. The change in the current and potential profiles of the composite metal-semiconductor sample after excitation at plasmonic resonance frequency of metallic nanoparticles is analyzed.

The metal polymer composite nanostructures are written directly by in-situ reduction of gold precursor within the photoresist using femto-second laser irradiation. The photo-initiator triggers t…
We report a novel design of a compact wavelength add-drop multiplexer utilizing dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DLSPPW-based configuration exploits routing properties of directional couplers and filtering abilities of Bragg gratings. We present practical realization of a 20-$μ$m-long device operating at telecom wavelengths that can reroute optical signals separated by approximately 70 nm in the wavelength band. We characterize the performance of the fabricated structures using scanning near-field optical microscopy as well as leakage-radiation microscopy a…
We show that, contrary to the common wisdom, surface plasmon poles are not involved in the imaging process in leakage radiation microscopy. Identifying the leakage radiation modes directly from a transverse magnetic potential leads us to reconsider the surface plasmon field and unfold the non-plasmonic contribution to the image formation. While both contributions interfere in the imaging process, our analysis reveals that the reassessed plasmonic field embodies a pole mathematically similar to the usual surface plasmon pole. This removes a long-standing ambiguity associated with plasmonic sign…
Theory predicts a distinct spectral shift between the near- and far-field optical responses of plasmonic antennas. Here we combine near-field optical microscopy and far-field spectroscopy of individual infrared-resonant nanoantennas to verify experimentally this spectral shift. Numerical calculations corroborate our experimental results. We furthermore discuss the implications of this effect in surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy (SEIRS).
Label-free observation of nanoparticles by far-field optical microscopy is challenging because their ability to scatter or absorb light dramatically diminishes with decreasing size. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) imaging have shown promises and respective limitations. For instance, it is challenging to achieve diffraction-limited resolution in SPR imaging; its refractive index sensitivity is not as localized as desired. LSPR imaging is typically employed with dark-field microscopy on sparse noble metal nanostructures, leading to low light through…
The determination of the chemical content is crucial for the quality control in high-precision device fabrication and advanced process development. For reliable chemical composition characterization, certain interaction volume of the target material is necessary for conventional techniques such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). This remains however a challenge for nanostructures. We hereby propose an alternative technique for measuring chemical composition of nanostructures with limited volume. By measuring the differences in the optica…
In this paper, we describe the implementation of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) to probe the chirality of plasmonic nanostructures. We demonstrate experimentally spin-driven directional coupling as well as vortex generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) by nanostructures built with T-shaped and $Λ$- shaped apertures. Using this far-field method, quantitative inspections, including directivity and extinction ratio measurements, are achieved via polarization analysis in both image and Fourier planes. To support our experimental findings, we develop an analytical model based on a multi…
Optical metasurfaces have emerged as a new generation of building blocks for multi-functional optics. Design and realization of metasurface elements place ever-increasing demands on accurate assessment of phase alterations introduced by complex nanoantenna arrays, a process referred to as quantitative phase imaging. Despite considerable effort, the widefield (non-scanning) phase imaging that would approach resolution limits of optical microscopy and indicate the response of a single nanoantenna still remains a challenge. Here, we report on a new strategy in incoherent holographic imaging of me…
We demonstrate `deterministic' launching of propagative quantum surface-plasmon polaritons at freely chosen positions on gold plasmonic receptacles. This is achieved by using as plasmon launcher a near-field scanning optical source made of a diamond nanocrystal with two Nitrogen-Vacancy color-center occupancy. Our demonstration relies on leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin homogeneous gold film and on near-field optical microscopy of a nanostructured thick gold film. Our work paves the way to future fundamental studies and applications in quantum plasmonics that require an accurate position…
An active control method of azo-polymer loaded surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) wave with tightly focused 532nm laser is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Theoretical analysis and experimental results are consistent, which confirm the validity of this method. The optically active control method has the advantage of simple samples preparation, high spatial resolution and selectively control of the SPPs wave. This optical control of SPPs wave method has potential applications in integrated plasmonics.
Focusing electromagnetic energy to sub-wavelength dimensions has become an increasingly active field of research for a variety of applications such as Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR), nanolithography, and nanoscale optical characterization of biological cells and single molecules using near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) technique. Double-sided surface plasmons in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) geometry have been shown to have very small wavelengths for dielectric of thickness of less than 10 nm. A tapered dielectric structure sandwiched between metal, can be used to efficient…
Evanescently coupled waveguides are a powerful platform to study and visualize the wave dynamics in tight-binding systems. Here, we investigate the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in arrays of dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides with a propagation constant gradient acting as an effective external potential. Using leakage radiation microscopy, we observe in real-space for single site excitation a periodic breathing of the wavepacket and an oscillatory motion in the case of Gaussian excitation of multiple waveguides. The corresponding momentum resolved spectra are co…
Electromagnetic (EM) wave detection over a large spectrum has recently attracted significant amount of attention. Traditional electronic EM wave sensors use large metallic probes which distort the field to be measured and also have strict limitations on the detectable RF bandwidth. To address these problems, integrated photonic EM wave sensors have been developed to provide high sensitivity and broad bandwidth. Previously we demonstrated a compact, broadband, and sensitive integrated photonic EM wave sensor, consisting of an organic electro-optic (EO) polymer refilled silicon slot photonic cry…
Low-profile patterned plasmonic surfaces are synergized with a broad class of silicon microstructures to greatly enhance near-field nanoscale imaging, sensing, and energy harvesting coupled with far-field free-space detection. This concept has a clear impact on several key areas of interest for the MEMS community, including but not limited to ultra-compact microsystems for sensitive detection of small number of target molecules, and surface devices for optical data storage, micro-imaging and displaying. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art in plasmonic theory as well as derive…
Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have emerged as a leading quantum sensor platform, combining exceptional sensitivity with nanoscale spatial resolution by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). Because fluorescence-based ODMR techniques are limited by low photon collection efficiency and modulation contrast, there has been growing interest in infrared (IR)-absorption-based readout of the NV singlet state transition. IR readout can improve contrast and collection efficiency, but it has thus far been limited to long-pathlength geometries in bulk samples due to the small absorption…
We report on the first experimental demonstration that the microstructure based on a dielectric cuboid combined to a thin metal film can act as an efficient plasmonic lens allowing focusing surface plasmons in a subwavelength scale. By means of numerical simulation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) field intensity distributions in the microstructure, we observe a low divergence of plasmonic photonic jet (PPJ) and high intensity subwavelength spots at the communication wavelength of 1530 nm. Then we fabricate an experimental sample of the microstructure and study the SSP field intensity distri…
Inspired by the capability of structured illumination microscopy in subwavelength imaging, many researchers devoted themselves to investigating this methodology. However, due to the free propagating feature of the traditional structured illumination fields, the resolution can be only improved up to double times compared with the diffractied limited microscopy. Besides, most of the previous studies, relying on incoherent illumination sources, are restricted to fluorescent samples. In this work, a subwavelength nonfluorescent imaging method is proposed based on the terahertz traveling wave and p…
When circularly polarized light interacts with a nanostructure, the optical response depends on the geometry of the structure. If the nanostructure is chiral (i.e., it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image), then its optical response, both in near-field and far-field, depends on the handedness of the incident light. In contrast, achiral structures exhibit identical far-field responses for left- and right-circular polarization. Here, we show that a perfectly achiral nanostructure, a plasmonic metamolecule with trigonal D3h symmetry, exhibits a near-field response that is sensitive to the h…
We report on a very first experimental observation of a new curved plasmonic beam, a plasmonic hook (PH), for surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves. We demonstrate that the SPP PH effect could be realized within a trapezoidal dielectric microstructure with the relative ease of fabrication compared to the generation of the Airy SPP waves which require complex techniques to compensate the wave vectors mismatch. Using numerical analysis, we predicted the PH phenomenon, optimized the microstructure and then confirmed the SPP PH existence via amplitude and phase-resolved scattering scanning near-fi…
Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy has been performed on silver nanoparticles in a scanning electron microscopy setup. Peaks appearing in the visible range for particles fabricated on silicon substrate are shown to arrive from excitation of out of plane eigenmodes by the electron beam. Monochromatic emission maps have been shown to resolve spatial field variation of resonant plasmon mode on length scale smaller than 25nm. Finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations are performed for both the cases of light excitation and electron excitation. The results of radiative emission under electr…
We address the issue of the second-order coherence of single surface plasmons launched by a quantum source of light into extended gold films. The quantum source of light is made of a scanning fluorescent nanodiamond hosting five nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers. By using a specially designed microscopy that combines near-field optics with far-field leakage-radiation microscopy in the Fourier space and adapted spatial filtering, we find that the quantum statistics of the initial source of light is preserved after conversion to surface plasmons and propagation along the polycrystalline gold f…

We study and actively control the coherent properties of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) optically exited on a nano-hole array. Amplitude and phase of the optical excitation are externally controlled via a digital spatial light modulator (SLM) and SPP interference fringe patterns are observed with high contrast. Our interferometric observations revel SPPs dressed with the Bloch modes of the periodic nano-structure. The momentum associated with these Dressed Plasmons (DP) is highly dependent on the grating period and fully matches our theoretical predictions. We show that the momentum of DP w…
We review the principle and methodology of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) applied to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Therefore we first analyse in detail the electromagnetic theory of leaky SPP waves. We show that LRM is a versatile optical far-field method allowing direct quantitative imaging and analysis of SPP propagation on thin metal films. We illustrate the LRM potentiality by analyzing the propagation of SPP waves interacting with several two dimensional plasmonic devices realized and studied in the recent years.
Understanding the near-field electromagnetic interactions that produce optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) is central to the integration of twisted light into nanotechnology. Here, we examine the cathodoluminescence (CL) of plasmonic vortices carrying OAM generated in spiral nanostructures through scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The nanospiral geometry defines the photonic local density of states (LDOS) sampled by STEM-CL, which provides access to the phase and amplitude of the plasmonic vortex with nanometer spatial and meV spectral resolution. We map the full spectral di…

This work emphasizes the ability to engineer the properties of confined optical modes and to leverage those characteristics for applications in imaging.…
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
We demonstrate spatially-resolved measurements of spontaneous and stimulated electron-photon interactions in nanoscale optical near fields using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CL), and photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). Specifically, we study resonant surface plasmon modes that are tightly confined to the tip apexes of an Au nanostar, enabling a direct correlation of EELS, CL, and PINEM on the same physical structure at the nanometer length scale. Complemented by numerical electromagnetic boundary-element method calculations, we …
The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral positio…
We introduce a point-like scanning single-photon source that operates at room temperature and offers an exceptional photostability (no blinking, no bleaching). This is obtained by grafting in a controlled way a diamond nanocrystal (size around 20 nm) with single nitrogen-vacancy color-center occupancy at the apex of an optical probe. As an application, we image metallic nanostructures in the near-field, thereby achieving a near-field scanning single-photon microscopy working at room temperature on the long term. Our work may be of importance to various emerging fields of nanoscience where an a…
Controlling the propagation and polarization vectors in linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy enables to probe the anisotropy of optical responses providing structural symmetry selective contrast in optical imaging. Here we present a novel tilted antenna-tip approach to control the optical vector-field by breaking the axial symmetry of the nano-probe in tip-enhanced near-field microscopy. This gives rise to a localized plasmonic antenna effect with significantly enhanced optical field vectors with control of both \textit{in-plane} and \textit{out-of-plane} components. We use the resulting …
