We study a geometrical formulation of the nonlinear second-order Riccati equation (SORE) in terms of the projective vector field equation on $S^1$, whichn in turn is related to the stability algebra of Virasoro orbit. Using Darboux integrability method we obtain the first-integral of SORE and the results are applied to the study of its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description. We unveil the relation between the Darboux polynomials and master symmetries associated to second-order Riccati. Using these results we show the existence of a Lagrangian description for the related system, and the Painlevé II equation is analysed.
Integrability conditions for Lie systems are related to reduction or transformation processes. We here analyse a geometric method to construct integrability conditions for Riccati equations following these approaches. This approach provides us with a unified geometrical viewpoint that allows us to analyse some previous works on the topic and explain new properties. Moreover, this new approach can be straightforwardly generalised to describe integrability conditions for any Lie system. Finally, we show the usefulness of our treatment in order to study the problem of the linearisability of Ricca…
In this article it is shown that S-Expansion procedure affects the geometry of a Lie group, changing it an leading us to the geometry of another Lie group with higher dimensionality. Is outlined, via an example, a method for determining the semigroup, which would provide a Lie algebra from another. Finally, it is proved that the Lie algebra obtained from another Lie algebra via S-Expansion is a non-simple Lie algebra. I
We review some basic theorems on integrability of Hamiltonian systems, namely the Liouville-Arnold theorem on complete integrability, the Nekhoroshev theorem on partial integrability and the Mishchenko-Fomenko theorem on noncommutative integrability, and for each of them we give a version suitable for the noncompact case. We give a possible global version of the previous local results, under certain topological hypotheses on the base space. It turns out that locally affine structures arise naturally in this setting.
In this paper we study certain integrability properties of the supersymmetric sine-Gordon equation. We construct Lax pairs with their zero-curvature representations which are equivalent to the supersymmetric sine-Gordon equation. From the fermionic linear spectral problem, we derive coupled sets of super Riccati equations and the auto-Bäcklund transformation of the supersymmetric sine-Gordon equation. In addition, a detailed description of the associated Darboux transformation is presented and non-trivial super multisoliton solutions are constructed. These integrability properties allow us to …
The time-evolution of the maximum and the width of exact analytic wave packet (WP) solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (SE) represents the particle and wave aspects, respectively, of the quantum system. The dynamics of the maximum, located at the mean value of position, is governed by the Newtonian equation of the corresponding classical problem. The width, which is directly proportional to the position uncertainty, obeys a complex nonlinear Riccati equation which can be transformed into a real nonlinear Ermakov equation. The coupled pair of these equations yields a dynamical …
The paper presents mathematical models of quasicrystals with particular attention given to cut-and-project sets. We summarize the properties of higher-dimensional quasicrystal models and then focus on the one-dimensional ones. For the description of their properties we use the methods of combinatorics on words.
In this paper we consider a four-parameter equation including the Camassa-Holm and the Dulling-Gottwald-Holm equations, among others. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a Cauchy problem involving the equation using Kato's approach. Conservation laws of the equation up to second order are also investigated. From these conservation laws we establish some properties of the solutions of the equation under consideration and we also find a quadrature for it. The quadrature obtained is of capital importance in a classification of bounded travelling wave solutions of the equation st…
In the statistical description of dynamical systems, an indication of the irreversibility of a given state change is given geometrically by means of a (pre-)ordering of state pairs. Reversible state changes of classical and quantum systems are shown to be represented by isometric state transformations. An operational distinction between reversible and irreversible dynamics is given and related to the geometric characterisation of the associated state transformations.
We discuss the integrability properties of the Boussinesq equations in the language of geometrical quantities defined on an appropriately chosen coset manifold connected with the $W_{3}$ algebra of Zamolodchikov. We provide a geometrical interpretation to the commuting conserved quantities, Lax-pair formulation, zero-curvature representation, Miura maps, etc. in the framework of nonlinear realization method.
In the present work, we discuss how the functional form of thermodynamic observables can be deduced from the geometric properties of subsets of phase space. The geometric quantities taken into account are mainly extrinsic curvatures of the energy level sets of the Hamiltonian of a system under investigation. In particular, it turns out that peculiar behaviours of thermodynamic observables at a phase transition point are rooted in more fundamental changes of the geometry of the energy level sets in phase space. More specifically, we discuss how microcanonical and geometrical descriptions of pha…
Certain geometric properties of submanifolds of configuration space are numerically investigated for classical lattice phi^4 models in one and two dimensions. Peculiar behaviors of the computed geometric quantities are found only in the two-dimensional case, when a phase transition is present. The observed phenomenology strongly supports, though in an indirect way, a recently proposed topological conjecture about a topology change of the configuration space submanifolds as counterpart of a phase transition.
The Lax pair formulation of the two-component Camassa-Holm equation (CH2) is generalized to produce an integrable multi-component family, CH(n,k), of equations with $n$ components and $1\le |k|\le n$ velocities. All of the members of the CH(n,k) family show fluid-dynamics properties with coherent solitons following particle characteristics. We determine their Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian structures and give numerical examples of their soliton solution behaviour. We concentrate on the CH(2,k) family with one or two velocities, including the CH(2,-1) equation in the Dym position of the CH2 hierarchy.…
We discuss the propagation of surface waves in an isotropic half space modelled with the linear Cosserat theory of isotropic elastic materials. To this aim we use a method based on the algebraic analysis of the surface impedance matrix and on the algebraic Riccati equation, and which is independent of the common Stroh formalism. Due to this method, a new algorithm which determines the amplitudes and the wave speed in the theory of isotropic elastic Cosserat materials is described. Moreover, the method allows to prove the existence and uniqueness of a subsonic solution of the secular equation, …
I give a short review of the theory of twisted symmetries of differential equations, emphasizing geometrical aspects. Some open problems are also mentioned.
Various aspects of coherent states of nonlinear $su(2)$ and $su(1,1)$ algebras are studied. It is shown that the nonlinear $su(1,1)$ Barut-Girardello and Perelomov coherent states are related by a Laplace transform. We then concentrate on the derivation and analysis of the statistical and geometrical properties of these states. The Berry's phase for the nonlinear coherent states is also derived.
Many important theories in modern physics can be stated using differential geometry. Symplectic geometry is the natural framework to deal with autonomous Hamiltonian mechanics. This admits several generalizations for nonautonomous systems, both regular and singular. Some of these extensions are the subject of this thesis. Recently there has been a growing interest in studying dissipative mechanical systems from a geometric perspective using contact geometry. In this thesis we review what has been done in this topic and go deeper, studying symmetries and dissipated quantities of contact systems…
A review on spectral and differential-geometric properties of Delsarte transmutation operators in multidimension is given. Their differential geometrical and topological structure in multidimension is analyzed, the relationships with De Rham-Hodge-Skrypnik theory of generalized differential complexes are stated. Some applications to integrable dynamical systems theory in multidimension are presented.
A generalized version of the TKNN-equations computing Hall conductances for generalized Dirac-like Harper operators is derived. Geometrically these equations relate Chern numbers of suitable (dual) bundles naturally associated to spectral projections of the operators.
A geometrical formulation of estimation theory for finite-dimensional $C^{\star}$-algebras is presented. This formulation allows to deal with the classical and quantum case in a single, unifying mathematical framework. The derivation of the Cramer-Rao and Helstrom bounds for parametric statistical models with discrete and finite outcome spaces is presented.
