These notes are an expanded version of a talk given by the second author. Our main interest is focused on the challenging problem of computing Kronecker coefficients. We decided, at the beginning, to take a very general approach to the problem of studying multiplicity functions, and we survey the various aspects of the theory that comes into play, giving a detailed bibliography to orient the reader. Nonetheless the main general theorems involving multiplicities functions (convexity, quasi-polynomial behavior, Jeffrey-Kirwan residues) are stated without proofs. Then, we present in detail our approach to the computational problem, giving explicit formulae, and outlining an algorithm that calculate many interesting examples, some of which appear in the literature also in connection with Hilbert series.
We provide a classification of multiplicity-free inner tensor products of irreducible characters of symmetric groups, thus confirming a conjecture of Bessenrodt. Concurrently, we classify all multiplicity-free inner tensor products of skew characters of the symmetric groups. We also provide formulae for calculating the decomposition of these tensor products.
We present combinatorial operators for the expansion of the Kronecker product of irreducible representations of the symmetric group. These combinatorial operators are defined in the ring of symmetric functions and act on the Schur functions basis. This leads to a combinatorial description of the Kronecker powers of the irreducible representations indexed with the partition (n-1,1) which specializes the concept of oscillating tableaux in Young's lattice previously defined by S. Sundaram. We call our specialization {\it Kronecker tableaux}. Their combinatorial analysis leads to enumerative resul…
The Kronecker coefficients are the structural constants for the tensor categories of representations of the symmetric groups; namely, given three partitions $λ, μ, τ$ of $n$, the multiplicity of $λ$ in $μ\otimes τ$ is called the Kronecker coefficient $g^λ_{μ, τ}$. When the first part of each of the partitions is taken to be very large (the remaining parts being fixed), the values of the appropriate Kronecker coefficients stabilize; the stable value is called the reduced (or stable) Kronecker coefficient. These coefficients also generalize the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and have been s…
The Kronecker product of two Schur functions $s_μ$ and $s_ν$, denoted by $s_μ*s_ν$, is the Frobenius characteristic of the tensor product of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to the partitions $μ$ and $ν$. The coefficient of $s_λ$ in this product is denoted by $γ^λ_{μν}$, and corresponds to the multiplicity of the irreducible character $χ^λ$ in $χ^μχ^ν.$ We use Sergeev's Formula for a Schur function of a difference of two alphabets and the comultiplication expansion for $s_λ[XY]$ to find closed formulas for the Kronecker coefficients $γ^λ_{μν}$ when $λ$ is an…
We prove an explicit formula for the tensor product with itself of an irreducible complex representation of the symmetric group defined by a rectangle of height two. We also describe part of the decomposition for the tensor product of representations defined by rectangles of heights two and four. Our results are deduced, through Schur-Weyl duality, from the observation that certain actions on triple tensor products of vector spaces, are multiplicity free.
Motivated by string-theoretic arguments Manschot, Pioline and Sen discovered a new remarkable formula for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth compact moduli space of stable quiver representations which effectively reduces to the abelian case (i.e. thin dimension vectors). We first prove a motivic generalization of this formula, valid for arbitrary quivers, dimension vectors and stabilities. In the case of complete bipartite quivers we use the refined GW/Kronecker correspondence between Euler characteristics of quiver moduli and Gromov-Witten invariants to identify the MPS formula for Euler cha…
The paper is a survey of recent results in geometric representation theory describing group actions which induce multiplicity-free representations in the spaces of holomorphic functions. For connected compact Lie groups of automorphisms of Stein manifolds we characterize such actions in terms of antiholomorphic involutions. Some proofs are given and some results are new. For example, spherical complex spaces are defined for arbitrary real forms of complex reductive groups. Their properties, which we prove here, were known only for compact real forms. We also show that a complex compact homogen…
We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of compact Gelfand pairs. First, we develop a criterion for a direct limit representation to be a multiplicity--free discrete direct sum of irreducible representations. Then we look at direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of compact riemannian symmetric spaces, where we combine our criterion with the Cartan--Helgason Theorem to show in general that the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on a certain function space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. That method is not applicable for direct limits of nonsymmetric …
Let $G=K\ltimes\mathbb{R}^n$, where $K$ is a compact connected subgroup of $O(n)$ acting on $\mathbb{R}^n$ by rotations. Let $\mathfrak{g}\supset\mathfrak{k}$ be the respective Lie algebras of $G$ and $K$, and $pr: \mathfrak{g}^{*}\longrightarrow\mathfrak{k}^{*}$ the natural projection. For admissible coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}^{G}\subset\mathfrak{g}^{*}$ and $\mathcal{O}^{K}\subset\mathfrak{k}^{*}$, we denote by $n(\mathcal{O}^{G},\mathcal{O}^{K})$ the number of $K$-orbits in $\mathcal{O}^{G}\cap pr^{-1}(\mathcal{O}^{K})$, which is called the Corwin-Greenleaf multiplicity function. Let $π\…
Let $\mathbb{H}_n$ be the $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg group and $K$ a closed subgroup of $U(n)$ acting on $\mathbb{H}_n$ by automorphisms such that $(K,\mathbb{H}_n)$ is a Gelfand pair. Let $G=K\ltimes\mathbb{H}_n$ be the semidirect product of $K$ and $\mathbb{H}_n$. Let $\mathfrak{g}\supset\mathfrak{k}$ be the respective Lie algebras of $G$ and $K$, and $\operatorname{pr}: \mathfrak{g}^{*}\longrightarrow\mathfrak{k}^{*}$ the natural projection. For coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}^{G}\subset\mathfrak{g}^{*}$ and $\mathcal{O}^{K}\subset\mathfrak{k}^{*}$, we denote by $n\big(\mathcal{O}^{G},\m…
We show that the problem of deciding membership in the moment polytope associated with a finite-dimensional unitary representation of a compact, connected Lie group is in NP and coNP. This is the first non-trivial result on the computational complexity of this problem, which naively amounts to a quadratically-constrained program. Our result applies in particular to the Kronecker polytopes, and therefore to the problem of deciding positivity of the stretched Kronecker coefficients. In contrast, it has recently been shown that deciding positivity of a single Kronecker coefficient is NP-hard in g…
A (quasi-)Hamiltonian manifold is called multiplicity free if all of its symplectic reductions are 0-dimensional. In this paper, we classify multiplicity free Hamiltonian actions for (twisted) loop groups or, equivalently, multiplicity free (twisted) quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds for simply connected compact Lie groups. As a result we recover old and find new examples of these structures.
Let $G$ be a compact connected semisimple Lie group, let $K$ be a closed subgroup of $G$, let $Γ$ be a finite subgroup of $G$, and let $τ$ be a finite-dimensional representation of $K$. For $π$ in the unitary dual $\widehat G$ of $G$, denote by $n_Γ(π)$ its multiplicity in $L^2(Γ\backslash G)$. We prove a strong multiplicity one theorem in the spirit of Bhagwat and Rajan, for the $n_Γ(π)$ for $π$ in the set $\widehat G_τ$ of irreducible $τ$-spherical representations of $G$. More precisely, for $Γ$ and $Γ'$ finite subgroups of $G$, we prove that if $n_Γ(π)= n_{Γ'}(π)$ for all but finitely many …
Let $(M,ω)$ be a connected symplectic manifold on which a connected Lie group $G$ acts properly and in a Hamiltonian fashion with moment map $μ:M \lra \mf g^*$. Our purpose is investigate multiplicity-free actions, giving criteria to decide a multiplicity freenes of the action. As an application we give the complete classification of multiplicity-free actions of compact Lie groups acting isometrically and in a Hamiltonian fashion on Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Successively we make a connection between multiplicity-free actions on $M$ and multiplicity-free actions on the symp…
Let $K$ be a compact connected Lie group acting unitarily on a finite-dimensional complex vector space $V$. One calls this a {\em multiplicity-free} action whenever the $K$-isotypic components of $\C[V]$ are $K$-irreducible. We have shown that this is the case if and only if the moment map $τ:V\rightarrow\k^*$ for the action is finite-to-one on $K$-orbits. This is equivalent to a result concerning \gp s associated with Heisenberg groups that is motivated by the Orbit Method. Further details of this work will be published elsewhere.
We compute the sheaf of automorphisms of a multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifold over its momentum polytope and show that its higher cohomology groups vanish. Together with a theorem of Losev, arXiv:math/0612561, this implies a conjecture of Delzant: a compact multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifold is uniquely determined by its momentum polytope and its principal isotropy group.
Coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces of compact Lie groups are important examples of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian groups actions. Constructing action-angle variables on these spaces is a challenging task. A fundamental result in the field is the Guillemin-Sternberg construction of Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems for the groups $K=U(n), SO(n)$. Extending these results to groups of other types is one of the goals of this paper. Partial tropicalizations are Poisson spaces with constant Poisson bracket built using techniques of Poisson-Lie theory and the geometric crystals of …
Let $G$ be a connected, linear, real reductive Lie group with compact centre. Let $K<G$ be compact. Under a condition on $K$, which holds in particular if $K$ is maximal compact, we give a geometric expression for the multiplicities of the $K$-types of any tempered representation (in fact, any standard representation) $π$ of $G$. This expression is in the spirit of Kirillov's orbit method and the quantisation commutes with reduction principle. It is based on the geometric realisation of $π|_K$ obtained in an earlier paper. This expression was obtained for the discrete series by Paradan, and fo…
Let $(G,H)$ be a reductive spherical pair and $P\subset H$ a parabolic subgroup such that $(G,P)$ is spherical. The triples $(G,H,P)$ with this property are called multiplicity free systems and they are classified in this paper. Denote by $π^{H}_μ=\mathrm{ind}_{P}^{H}μ$ the Borel-Weil realization of the irreducible $H$-representation of highest weight $μ\in P^{+}_{H}$ and consider the induced representation $\mathrm{ind}_{P}^{G}χ_μ=\mathrm{ind}_{H}^{G}π^{H}_μ$, a multiplicity free induced representation. Some properties of the spectrum of the multiplicity free induced representations are discu…
Let $G$ be a compact semisimple Lie group and $T$ be a maximal torus of $G$. We describe a method for weight multiplicity computation in unitary irreducible representations of $G$, based on the theory of Berezin quantization on $G/T$. Let $Γ_{\rm hol}(\mathcal{L}^λ)$ be the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of holomorphic sections of the homogeneous line bundle $\mathcal{L}^λ$ over $G/T$ associated with the highest weight $λ$ of the irreducible representation $π_λ$ of $G$. The multiplicity of a weight $m$ in $π_λ$ is computed from functional analytical structure of the Berezin symbol of the pro…
We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of Gelfand pairs of the form $G_n = N_n\rtimes K_n$ with $N_n$ nilpotent, in other words pairs $(G_n,K_n)$ for which $G_n/K_n$ is a commutative nilmanifold. First, we extend the criterion of \cite{W3} for a direct limit representation to be multiplicity free. Then we study direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of commutative nilmanifolds and look to see when the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on an appropriate Hilbert space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. One knows that the $N_n$ are commutative or 2--step…
