We study the band-centre anomaly in the one-dimensional Anderson model with weak correlated disorder. Our analysis is based on the Hamiltonian map approach; the correspondence between the discrete model and its continuous counterpart is discussed in detail. We obtain analytical expressions of the localisation length and of the invariant measure of the phase variable, valid for energies in a neighbourhood of the band centre. By applying these general results to specific forms of correlated disorder, we show how correlations can enhance or suppress the anomaly at the band centre.
We present a full analytical solution for the localisation length in the one-dimensional Anderson model with weak diagonal disorder in the vicinity of the band centre. The results are obtained with the Hamiltonian map approach that turns out to be more effective than other known methods. The analytical expressions are supported by numerical data. We also discuss the implications of our results for the single-parameter scaling hypothesis.
In this paper, we developed a new parametrization method to calculate the localization length in one-dimensional Anderson model with diagonal disorder. This method can avoid the divergence difficulty encountered in the conventional methods, and significantly save computing time as well.
1D diagonally disordered chain with Frenkel exciton and long range exponential intersite interaction is considered. It is shown that some states of this disordered system are delocalised (extended) contrary to the popular statement that all states in 1D disordered system are localised. The theorem is established that for the Anderson's model of diagonal disorder one should expect the appearance of states with extended module. All statements are confirmed by computer simulations.
We investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, possible routes towards Anderson-like localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered potentials. The dependence of this quantum interference effect on the nonlinear interactions and the shape of the disorder potential is investigated. Experiments with an optical lattice and a superimposed disordered potential reveal the lack of Anderson localization. We calculated numerically the localization length of one-dimensional Anderson model with correlated diagonal disorder. For zero energy point in the weak disorder limit, we showed that the localization length changes continuously as the correlation of the disorder increases. We found that higher order terms of the correlation must be included into the current perturbation result in order to give the correct localization length, and to connect smoothly the anomaly at zero correlation with the perturbation result for large correlation.
The role of disorder on wave propagation through the universe is studied. Assuming space fluctuations of the order of the Planck length and the size of the universe as the corresponding localization length for the background radiation, we obtain the exponent (close to unity) in the power law relationship between these quantities. This suggests that the role of Anderson localization is not negligible at cosmological scales.
We study the influence of scale-free correlated disorder on the metal-insulator transition in the Anderson model of localization. We use standard transfer matrix calculations and perform finite-size scaling of the largest inverse Lyapunov exponent to obtain the localization length for respective 3D tight-binding systems. The density of states is obtained from the full spectrum of eigenenergies of the Anderson Hamiltonian. We discuss the phase diagram of the metal-insulator transition and the influence of the correlated disorder on the critical exponents.
We describe a large disorder renormalization group (LDRG) method for the Anderson model of localization in one dimension which decimates eigenstates based on the size of their wavefunctions rather than their energy. We show that our LDRG scheme flows to infinite disorder, and thus becomes asymptotically exact. We use it to obtain the disorder-averaged inverse participation ratio and density of states for the entire spectrum. A modified scheme is formulated for higher dimensions, which is found to be less efficient, but capable of improvement.
We investigate the scaling properties of the two-dimensional (2D) Anderson model of localization with purely off-diagonal disorder (random hopping). In particular, we show that for small energies the infinite-size localization lengths as computed from transfer-matrix methods together with finite-size scaling diverge with a power-law behavior. The corresponding exponents seem to depend on the strength and the type of disorder chosen.

We study Anderson localization of single particles in continuous, correlated, one-dimensional disordered potentials. We show that tailored correlations can completely change the energy-dependence of the localization length. By considering two suitable models of disorder, we explicitly show that disorder correlations can lead to a nonmonotonic behavior of the localization length versus energy. Numerical calculations performed within the transfer-matrix approach and analytical calculations performed within the phase formalism up to order three show excellent agreement and demonstrate the effect.…
Statistical and scaling properties of the Lyapunov exponent for a tight-binding model with the diagonal disorder described by a dichotomic process are considered near the band edge. The effect of correlations on scaling properties is discussed. It is shown that correlations lead to an additional parameter governing the validity of single parameter scaling.

We resolve the problem of the violation of single parameter scaling at the zero energy of the Anderson tight-binding model with diagonal disorder. It follows from the symmetry properties of the tight-binding Hamiltonian that this spectral point is in fact a boundary between two adjacent bands. The states in the vicinity of this energy behave similarly to states at other band boundaries, which are known to violate single parameter scaling.
Using the particular momentum conservation laws in dimension d=2, we can rewrite the Anderson model in terms of low momentum long range fields, at the price of introducing electron loops. The corresponding loops satisfy a Ward type identity, hence are much smaller than expected. This fact should be useful for a study of the weak-coupling model in the middle of the spectrum of the free Hamiltonian.
The localization of one-electron states in the large (but finite) disorder limit is investigated. The inverse participation number shows a non--monotonic behavior as a function of energy owing to anomalous behavior of few-site localization. The two-site approximation is solved analytically and shown to capture the essential features found in numerical simulations on one-, two- and three-dimensional systems. Further improvement has been obtained by solving a three-site model.
We introduce a matrix-operator formulation of the Anderson model in d=2. In a single slice, we can then derive an analogy between our model and a standard random matrices problem. This enables us to construct and control the Green function in one slice, which is an important prerequisite to a full multi-scale study of the problem using the Renormalisation Group approach.

For a one dimensional half-infinite chain with diagonal disorder we calculated the ultimate at $t\to\infty$ value of the average excitation density at the edge site $D$ if at $t=0$ the excitation was localised at the edge site (Anderson' s creterium). We obtained the following results: i) for the binary disordered chain we derived the close expression for $D$ which is exact in the limit of low concentration of defects and is valid for an arbitrary energy of defects $\varepsilon$. We resolve an apparent contradiction between numeric and analytic results for one-dimensional disordered systems with power-law spectral correlations. The conflict arises when considering rigorous results that constrain the set of correlation functions yielding metallic states to those with non-zero values in the thermodynamic limit. The single-parameter scaling hypothesis predicts the absence of delocalized states for noninteracting quasiparticles in low-dimensional disordered systems. We show analytically and numerically that extended states may occur in the one- and two-dimensional Anderson model with a nonrandom hopping falling off as some power of the distance between sites. The different size scaling of the bare level spacing and the renormalized magnitude of the disorder seen by the quasiparticles finally results in the delocalization of states at one of the band edges of the quasiparticle energy spectrum. We develop a polymer expansion with large/small field conditions for the mean resolvent of a weakly disordered system. Then we show that we can apply our result to a two-dimensional model, for energies outside the unperturbed spectrum or in the free spectrum provided the potential has an infra-red cut-off. This leads to an asymptotic expansion for the density of states. We believe this is an important first step towards a rigourous analysis of the density of states in the free spectrum of a random Schrödinger operator at weak disorder.
When light waves propagate through disordered photonic lattices, they can eventually become localized due to multiple scattering effects. Here we show experimentally that while the evolution and localization of the photon density distribution is similar in the two cases of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, the density-density correlation carries a distinct signature of the type of disorder. We show that these differences reflect a symmetry in the spectrum and eigenmodes that exists in off-diagonally disordered lattices but is absent in lattices with diagonal disorder.
We develop a cluster typical medium theory to study localization in disordered electronic systems. Our formalism is able to incorporate non-local correlations beyond the local typical medium theory in a systematic way. The cluster typical medium theory utilizes the momentum resolved typical density of states and hybridization function to characterize the localization transition. A simple Kronig-Penney model for one-dimensional (1D) mesoscopic systems with $δ$ peak potentials is used to study numerically the influence of a spatial disorder on the conductance fluctuations and distribution at different regimes. We use the Levy laws to investigate the statistical properties of the eigenstates. The phase diagram of correlated, disordered electrons is calculated within dynamical mean--field theory using the geometrically averaged (''typical'') local density of states. Correlated metal, Mott insulator and Anderson insulator phases, as well as coexistence and crossover regimes are identified. The Mott and Anderson insulators are found to be continuously connected.
Strongly correlated fermions in a crystal or in an optical lattice in the presence of binary alloy disorder are investigated. We employ the statistical dynamical mean-field theory, which incorporates both, local fluctuations due to disorder and local correlations due to interaction, to solve the Anderson-Hubbard model. Localization due to disorder is studied by means of the probability distribution function of the local density of states. We obtain a complete paramagnetic ground state phase diagram consisting of disordered correlated metal, Anderson-Mott insulator, and band insulator.
We investigate the effect of spatially correlated disorder on the Anderson transition of phonons in three dimensions using a Greens function based approach, namely, the typical medium dynamical cluster approximation (TMDCA), in mass-disordered systems. We numerically demonstrate that correlated disorder with pairwise correlations mitigates the localization of the vibrational modes. A correlation driven localization-delocalization transition can emerge in a three-dimensional disordered system with an increase in the strength of correlations.
The Anderson model for independent electrons in a disordered potential is transformed analytically and exactly to a basis of random extended states leading to a variant of augmented space. Localization due to disorder has been one of the most intriguing theoretical concepts evolved in condensed matter. Here, we expand the theory of localization by considering two types of disorder at the same time, namely the original Anderson's disorder and the structural defect disorder, which has been suggested to be a key component in recently discovered two-dimensional amorphous materials. The magnetic ground state phase diagram of the disordered Hubbard model at half-filling is computed in dynamical mean-field theory supplemented with the spin resolved, typical local density of states. The competition between many-body correlations and disorder is found to stabilize paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic metallic phases at weak interactions. Strong disorder leads to Anderson localization of the electrons and suppresses the antiferromagnetic long-range order. Slater and Heisenberg antiferromagnets respond characteristically different to disorder. The results can be tested with cold …
The Anderson metal-insulator transition is a continuous phase transition driven by disorder. It remains a challenging problem to theoretically determine universal critical properties at the transition. The Anderson transition in a model with a discrete sublattice or particle-hole symmetry belongs to one of seven universality classes which are different from the three well-known standard ones. Here we review our recent theoretical work on these new universality classes in (quasi) one and two dimensions.
Our recently established criterion for the formation of extended states on tree graphs in the presence of disorder is shown to have the surprising implication that for bounded random potentials, as in the Anderson model, there is no transition to a spectral regime of Anderson localization, in the form usually envisioned, unless the disorder is strong enough.
We study the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) in finite conductors with diffusive disorder. The disorder averaged logarithm of $χ$, the overlap between the ground states before and after adding a static impurity, is found to depend nonmonotonically on the disorder. In two dimensions $<\lnχ^{-1}> \propto \ln^2 N$ in the weak disorder limit, thus showing a stronger dependence on the number of electrons $N$ than in the canonical AOC. A very broad tail of the distribution of $χ$, found numerically, is a signature of the importance of a few-level statistics at the Fermi energy.
We evaluate the localization length of the wave (or Schroedinger) equation in the presence of a disordered speckle potential. This is relevant for experiments on cold atoms in optical speckle potentials. We focus on the limit of large disorder, where the Born approximation breaks down and derive an expression valid in the "quasi-metallic" phase at large disorder. This phase becomes strongly localized and the effective mobility edge disappears.
Different disorders lead to various localization and topological phenomena in condensed matter and artificial systems. Here we study the topological and localization properties in one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with spatially correlated random binary disorders. We consider a local moment which is coupled by a non-random Kondo $J$ to a band of conduction electrons in a random potential. We prove an analog of Anderson's theorem in a large-N limit of this model. The theorem states that when the disorder is weak, the disorder-averaged low-temperature thermodynamics is independent of the strength of the disorder; remarkably, it further states that fluctuation effects in the long-time limit are {\it independent even of the realization of the disorder}. We discuss the relationship of this theorem to theoretical and experimental studies of similar problems.
We demonstrate that local density of states fluctuations in disordered Anderson lattice models universally lead to the emergence of non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior. The NFL regime appears at moderate disorder (W = W_c) and is characterized by power-law anomalies, e. g. C/T ~ 1/T^{(1-α)}, where the exponent αvaries continuously with disorder, as in other Griffiths phases. This Griffiths phase is not associated with the proximity to any magnetic ordering, but reflects the approach to a disorder-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT). We study numerically the character of electron eigenstates of the three dimensional disordered Anderson model. Analysis of the statistics of inverse participation ratio as well as numerical evaluation of the electron-hole correlation function confirm that there are no localized states below the mobility edge, as well as no metallic state in the tail of the conductive band. We discuss also finite size effects observed in the analysis of all the discussed quantities.
A zero temperature Anderson-Mott transition driven by spin disorder can be `tuned' by an applied magnetic field to achieve colossal magnetoconductance. Usually this is not possible since spin disorder by itself cannot localise a high density electron system. Interplay of Flat-band and Anderson localizations in disordered moire superlattices

Employing the Kernel Polynomial method (KPM), we study the electronic properties of the graphene bilayers in the presence of diagonal disorder, within the tight-binding approximation. The KPM method enables us to calculate local density of states (LDOS) without need to exactly diagonalize the Hamiltonian. We use the geometrical averaging of the LDOS's at different lattice sites as a criterion to distinguish the localized states from extended ones. We find that bilayer graphene undergoes Anderson metal-insulator transition at a critical value of disorder strength.
We provide an analytic theory of Anderson localization on a lattice with a weak short-range correlated disordered potential. Contrary to the general belief we demonstrate that even next-neighbor statistical correlations in the potential can give rise to strong anomalies in the localization length and the density of states, and to the complete violation of single parameter scaling. Such anomalies originate in additional symmetries of the lattice model in the limit of weak disorder. The results of numerical simulations are in full agreement with our theory, with no adjustable parameters.
Using a combination of numerical and analytical calculations, we study the disorder-induced zero bias anomaly (ZBA) in the density of states of strongly-correlated systems modeled by the two dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model. We find that the ZBA comes from the response of the nonlocal inelastic self-energy to the disorder potential, a result which has implications for theoretical approaches that retain only the local self-energy. Hitherto, Anderson localization has been demonstrated separately in two limits of disorder, namely, amorphous disorder and nearly-periodic disorder. Anderson localization has been a subject of intense studies for many years. In this context, we study numerically the influence of long-range correlated disorder on the localization behavior in one dimensional systems. We investigate the localization length and the density of states and compare our numerical results with analytical predictions. Specifically, we find two distinct characteristic behaviors in the vicinity of the band center and at the unperturbed band edge, respectively. Furthermore we address the effect of the intrinsic short-range correlations.

We explore the interplay of disorder and topological phenomena in honeycomb lattices of atoms coupled by the electromagnetic field. On the one hand, disorder can trigger transitions between distinct topological phases and drive the lattice into the topological Anderson insulator state. On the other hand, the nontrivial topology of the photonic band structure suppresses Anderson localization of modes that disorder introduces inside the band gap of the ideal lattice. Complete localization is shown to hold for the $d$-dimensional Anderson model with uniformly distributed random potentials provided the disorder strength $λ>λ_{And}$ where $λ_{\text{And}}$ satisfies $λ_{\text{And}}=μ_d e \ln λ_{\text{And}}$ with $μ_d$ the self-avoiding walk connective constant for the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Notably $λ_{\text{And}}$ is precisely the large disorder threshold proposed by Anderson in 1958.
Using a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach to open systems, we study the interplay of disorder and superradiance in a one- and three-dimensional Anderson model. Analyzing the complex eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, a transition to a superradiant regime is shown to occur. We review recent progress in our theoretical understanding of strongly correlated fermion systems in the presence of disorder. Results were obtained by the application of a powerful nonperturbative approach, the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT), to interacting disordered lattice fermions. In particular, we demonstrate that DMFT combined with geometric averaging over disorder can capture Anderson localization and Mott insulating phases on the level of one-particle correlation functions. We show that, in contrast to immediate intuition, Anderson localization of noninteracting particles induced by a disordered potential in free space can increase (i.e., the localization length can decrease) when the particle energy increases, for appropriately tailored disorder correlations. We predict the effect in one, two, and three dimensions, and propose a simple method to observe it using ultracold atoms placed in optical disorder. The increase of localization with the particle energy can serve to discriminate quantum versus classical localization.
A conducting 1D line or 2D plane inside (or on the surface of) an insulator is considered.Impurities displace the charges inside the insulator. This results in a long-range fluctuating electric field acting on the conducting line (plane). This field can be modeled by that of randomly distributed electric dipoles. This model provides a random correlated potential with <U(r)U(r+k)> decaying as 1/k . In the 1D case such correlations give essential corrections to the localization length but do not destroy Anderson localization.

We present a theory for disordered interacting electrons that can describe both the Mott and the Anderson transition in the respective limits of zero disorder and zero interaction. We use it to investigate the T=0 Mott-Anderson transition at a fixed electron density, as a the disorder strength is increased. Surprisingly, we find two critical values of disorder W_{nfl} and W_c. For W > W_{nfl}, the system enters a ``Griffiths'' phase, displaying metallic non-Fermi liquid behavior.
