We show evidence that the competition between the antiferromagetic metallic phase and the charge- and orbital-ordered insulating phase at the reentrant phase boundary of a layered manganite, LaSr2Mn2O7, can be manipulated using ultrafast optical excitation. The time-dependent evolution of the Jahn-Teller superlattice reflection, which indicates the formation of the charge and orbital order, was measured at different laser fluences. The laser-induced enhancement and reduction the Jahn-Teller reflection intensity shows a reversal of sign between earlier (~10 ns) and later (~150 ns) time delays during the relaxation after photo excitation. This effect is consistent with a scenario whereby the laser excitation modulates the local competition between the metallic and the insulating phases.
We report the observation of a large 1/f noise in the ferromagnetic insulating state (FMI) of a hole doped manganite single crystal of La0.80Ca0.20MnO3 which manifests hopping conductivity in presence of a Coulomb gap. The temperature dependent noise magnitude shows a deep within the FMI state, there is a sharp freeze out of the noise magnitude with temperature on cooling. As the material enters the FMI state, the noise becomes non-Gaussian as seen through probability density function and second spectra. It is proposed to arise from charge fluctuations in a correlated glassy phase of the polar…
We report the results of electrical resistivity measurements carried out on well-sintered La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 / Mn3O4 composite samples with almost constant composition of the magnetoresistive manganite phase (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3). A percolation threshold (fc) occurs when the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 volume fraction is ~ 0.19. The dependence of the electrical resistivity as a function of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 volume fraction (fLCMO) can be described by percolation-like phenomenological equations. Fitting the conducting regime (fLCMO > fc) by the percolation power law returns a critical exponent t value of 2.0 +/- 0.2 at…
We study theoretically the magnetic and electric properties of the interface between two antiferromagnetic and insulating manganites: La0.5Ca0.5MnO3, a strong correlated insulator, and CaMnO3, a band-insulator. We find that a ferromagnetic and metallic electron gas is formed at the interface between the two layers. We confirm the metallic character of the interface by calculating the in-plane conductance. The possibility of increasing the electron gas density by selective doping is also discussed.
We show that applying strain on half-doped manganites makes it possible to tune the system to the proximity of a metal-insulator transition and thereby generate a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) response. This phase competition not only allows control of CMR in ferromagnetic metallic manganites but can be used to generate CMR response in otherwise robust insulators at half-doping. Further, from our realistic microscopic model of strain and magnetotransport calculations within the Kubo formalism, we demonstrate a striking result of strain engineering that, under tensile strain, a ferromagnetic…
We report a significant change in friction of a $\rm La_{0.55}Ca_{0.45}MnO_3$ thin film measured as a function of the materials resistive state under ultrahigh vacuum conditions at room temperature by friction force microscopy. While friction is high in the insulating state, it clearly changes to lower values if the probed local region is switched to the conducting state via nanoscale resistance switching. Thus we demonstrate active control of friction without having to change the temperature or pressure. Upon switching back to an insulating state the friction increases again. The results are …
The detailed evolution of the magnitude of the local Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in La_{1-x} Ca_x Mn O_3 is obtained across the phase diagram for 0 < x < 0.5 from high quality neutron diffraction data using the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) method. A local JT distortion is observed in the insulating phase for all Ca concentrations studied. However, in contrast with earlier local structure studies its magnitude is not constant, but decreases continuously with increasing Ca content. This observation is at odds with a simple small-polaron picture for the insulating state.
Femtosecond (fs)-resolved simultaneous measurements of charge and spin dynamics reveal the coexistence of two different quasi-particle excitations in colossal magneto-resistive (CMR) manganites, with {\em fs} and {\em ps} relaxation times respectively. Their populations reverse size above a {\em photoexcitation-intensity-threshold} coinciding with a "sudden" antiferro-to-ferromagnetic switching during $<$100 fs laser pulses. We present evidence that fast, metallic, mobile quasi--electrons dressed by {\em quantum spin fluctuations} coexist with slow, localized, polaronic charge carriers in non-…
Strontium doping transforms manganites of type La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) from an insulating antiferromagnet (x=0) to a metallic ferromagnet (x>0.16) due to the induced charge carriers (holes). Neutron scattering experiments were employed to investigate the effect of Sr doping on a tailor-made compound of composition La(0.7)Sr(0.3)Mn(0.1)Ti(0.3)Ga(0.6)O(3). By the simultaneous doping with Sr2+ and Ti4+ ions the compound remains in the insulating state, so that the magnetic interactions for large Sr doping can be studied in the absence of charge carriers. At TC=215 K there is a first-order reconstructi…
We report a significant decrease in the low-temperature resistance induced by the application of an electric current on the $ab$-plane in the paramagnetic insulating (PMI) state of (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. A colossal electroresistance effect attaining -95% is observed at lower temperatures. A colossal magnetoresistive step appears near 5T at low temperatures below 10K, accompanied by an ultrasharp width of the insulator-metal transition. Injection of higher currents to the crystal causes a disappearance of the steplike transition. These findings have a close rel…
Measurements of the low-frequency (f<=100 kHz) permittivity and conductivity at T<= 150 K are reported for La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) (0<=x<=1) and Ca(1-y)Sr(y)MnO(3) (0<=y<=0.75) having antiferromagnetic, insulating ground states covering a broad range of Mn valencies from Mn(3+) to Mn(4+). Static dielectric constants are determined from the low-T limiting behavior. With increasing T, relaxation peaks associated with charge-carrier hopping are observed in the real part of the permittivities and analyzed to determine dopant binding energies. The data are consistent with a simple model of hydrogenic im…
Doped and undoped manganites are modeled by the coupling between itinerant $e_g$ electrons and static $t_{2g}$ spins, the Jahn-Teller and breathing phonon modes, and the Coulomb interaction. We provide for a careful estimate of all parameters and solve the corresponding Hamiltonian by dynamical mean field theory. Our results for the one-electron spectrum, the optical conductivity, the dynamic and static lattice distortion, as well as the Curie temperature show the importance of all of the above ingredients for a realistic calculation as well as for describing the unusual dynamical properties o…
In this paper we have created a strain driven single crystal like ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state in a PLD grown thin film of low doped LCMO(X = 0.15)on NGO(100) substrate and make a thorough study of strain effects on the electric and magnetic transport of this film. We have studied and compared the FMI state, ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC), ferromagnetic insulating temperature (TFMI) and the resistivity of the film in details with bulk single crystals of X=0.18 to 0.22 doping region. We have found that TFMI and the localisation length of the carriers are increased and there i…
The phase diagram and low temperature properties of the doped manganites A1-xBxMnO3 are discussed for the concentrations x < 0.4. The transition from insulating antiferromagnetic to metallic ferromagnetic state at x_cr = 0.16 is treated by means of percolation theory. The unifying description of insulating and metallic states is presented. The undoped manganite is a band insulator consisting of ferromagnetic layers, which are coupled antiferromagnetically along the c direction with a low Neel temperature. The metallic phase can be described by the two-band Fermi liquid picture. The behavior of…
In a manganite film without quenched disorder, we show texturing in the form of insulating and metallic stripes above and below Curie temperature (Tc), respectively, by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). The formation of these stripes involves competing orbital and charge orders, and are an outcome of overlapping electron wave-functions mediated by long-range lattice strain. Contrary to popular perception, electronically homogeneous stripe phase underlines the efficacy of the lattice strain in bringing about charge density modulation and in impeding the cross…
The coupling between the electrical transport properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films and structural phase transitions of SrTiO3 (STO) substrates at Ts = 105 K has been investigated. We found that the electrical resistivity of LSMO films exhibit a cusp at Ts, which is greatly amplified by tuning films to the verge of metallic and insulating phases, i.e., to the boundary of two delicate competing electronic states. Our results demonstrate that small amounts of strain can tip the subtle balance of competing interactions and tune the electronic properties in correlated electron materials.
Neutron scattering measurements on a magnetoresistive manganite La$_{0.75}$(Ca$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$)$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ show that uncorrelated dynamic polaronic lattice distortions are present in both the orthorhombic (O) and rhombohedral (R) paramagnetic phases. The uncorrelated distortions do not exhibit any significant anomaly at the O-to-R transition. Thus, both the paramagnetic phases are inhomogeneous on the nanometer scale, as confirmed further by strong damping of the acoustic phonons and by the anomalous Debye-Waller factors in these phases. In contrast, recent x-ray measurements and our …
We present evidence of direct electron tunneling across intrinsic insulating regions in sub-micrometer wide bridges of the phase separated ferromagnet (La,Pr,Ca)MnO$_3$. Upon cooling below the Curie temperature, a predominantly ferromagnetic supercooled state persists where tunneling across the intrinsic tunnel barriers (ITBs) results in metastable, temperature-independent, high-resistance plateaus over a large range of temperatures. Upon application of a magnetic field, our data reveal that the ITBs are extinguished resulting in sharp, colossal, low-field resistance drops. Our results compare…
We have performed electrical resistivity and DC magnetization measurements as a function of temperature, on polycrystalline samples of phase separated LaPrCaMnO. We have used the General Effective Medium Theory to obtain theoretical resistivity vs. temperature curves corresponding to different fixed ferromagnetic volume fraction values, assuming that the sample is a mixture of typical metallic like and insulating manganites. By comparing this data with our experimental resistivity curves we have obtained the relative ferromagnetic volume fraction of our sample as a function of temperature. Thi…
Current-induced switching from metallic to insulating state is observed in phase-separated states of (La_{1-y}Pr_y)_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 (y=0.7) and Nd_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Mn_{1-z}Cr_zO_3 (z=0.03) crystals. Application of magnetic fields to this current-induced insulating state causes pronounced low-field negative magnetoresistance effect [r(H)/r(0)=10^{-3} at H=1kOe]. Application of a constant voltage also causes breakdown of ohmic relation above a threshold voltage. At voltages higher than this threshold value, oscillations in currents are observed. This oscillation is well reproduced by a simple mod…
We present a single-orbital double-exchange model, coupled with cooperative phonons (the so called breathing-modes of the oxygen octahedra in manganites). The model is studied with Monte Carlo simulations. For a finite range of doping and coupling constants, a first-order Metal-Insulator phase transition is found, that coincides with the Paramagnetic-Ferromagnetic phase transition. The insulating state is due to the self-trapping of every carrier within an oxygen octahedron distortion.
We have performed x-ray linear and circular magnetic dichroism experiments at the Mn L2,3-edge of the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 ultra thin films. Our measurements show that the antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating phase is stabilized by the interfacial rearrangement of the Mn 3d orbitals, despite the relevant magnetostriction anisotropic effect on the double-exchange ferromagnetic (FM) metallic phase. As a consequence, the Mn atomic magnetic moment orientation and how it reacts to strain differ in the FM and AF phases. In some cases a FM insulating (FMI) phase adds to the AF and FM. Its peculiar magnetic pr…
Synchrotron infrared measurements were conducted over the range 100 to 8000 cm-1 on a self-doped LaxMnO3-d (x~~0.8) film. From these measurements we determined the conductivity, the effective number of free carriers, and the specific phonon modes as a function of frequency. While the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMI) and the magnetic ordering temperature (TC) approximately coincide, the free carrier density onset occurs at a significantly lower temperature (~~45 K below). This suggests that local distortions exist below TMI and TC which trap the eg conduction electrons. These region…
Versatile features of impurity doping effects on perovskite manganites, $R_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$, have been investigated with varying the doing species as well as the $R$-dependent one-electron bandwidth. In ferromagnetic-metallic manganites ($R$=La, Nd, and Sm), a few percent of Fe substitution dramatically decreases the ferromagnetic transition temperature, leading to a spin glass insulating state with short-range charge-orbital correlation. For each $R$ species, the phase diagram as a function of Fe concentration is closely similar to that for $R_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ obtained by de…
The physics of manganites appears to be dominated by phase competition among ferromagnetic metallic and charge-ordered antiferromagnetic insulating states. Previous investigations (Burgy {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 277202 (2001)) have shown that quenched disorder is important to smear the first-order transition between those competing states, and induce nanoscale inhomogeneities that produce the colossal magnetoresistance effect. Recent studies (Motome {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 167204 (2003)) have provided further evidence that disorder is important in the manganite …
We report a strong effect of interface-induced magnetization on the transport properties of magnetic tunnel junctions consisting of ferromagnetic manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ and insulating cuprate PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$. Contrary to the typically observed steady increase of the tunnel magnetoresistance with decreasing temperature, this system exhibits a sudden anomalous decrease at low temperatures. Interestingly, this anomalous behavior can be attributed to the competition between the positive spin polarization of the manganite contacts and the negative spin-filter effect from …
We discuss our very interesting experimental observation that the low-temperature two-phase coexistence in half-doped manganites is multi-valued (at any field) in that we can tune the coexisting antiferromagnetic-insulating(AF-I) and the ferromagnetic-metallic(FM-M) phase-fractions by following different paths in (H,T) space. We have shown experimentally that the phase-fraction, in this two-phase coexistence, can take continuous infinity of values. All but one of these are metastable, and two-phase coexistence is not an equilibrium state.
We discuss the phase diagram of the two-orbital model of half-doped manganites by calculating self-consistently the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion patterns, charge, orbital and magnetic order at zero temperature. We analyse the instabilities of these phases caused by electron or hole doping away from half-doping, or by the application of a magnetic-field. For the CE insulating phase of half-doped manganites, in the intermediate JT coupling regime, we show that there is a competition between canting of spins (which promotes mobile carriers) and polaronic self-trapping of carriers by JT defects. Th…
The ferromagnetic phase in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 manganite is completely spin polarized (100%) at room temperature. This is demonstrated on high quality epitaxial films by Spin-Polarized Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. The films consist of a highly homogeneous ferromagnetic (FM) phase in which minority paramagnetic (PM) defects are embedded (less than 1% for best films). PM defects exhibit featureless tunneling spectroscopic characteristics and an insulating-like conductance. FM phase exhibit metallic behavior and strongly nonlinear characteristics. Deconvolution of the spectroscopic curves for the FM…
Understanding orbital ordered (OO) Mott insulating states lies at the heart of a consistent resolution of the colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) observed in manganites, where its melting induces a low-$T$ insulator-metal transition for $0.25 \le x\le 0.45$. Motivated thereby, we study the OO states in a planar model for bilayer manganites using DMFT and finite-size diagonalisation methods. We derive the correct OO ground states observed in manganites for $x=0,{1/2},{2/3},{3/4}$ in exact agreement with observations, including the charge-orbital-magnetic ordered stripe phases for $x>{1/2}$. These…
Ferromagnetic insulator Pr0.8Ca0.2Mn1-yCoyO3 (0 <= y <= 0.7) thin films were epitaxially grown on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. To probe the ferromagnetic insulator state of hole-doped manganites, the Co content dependences of the structural, magnetic, and transport properties were studied. Variation of lattice constant by the substitution of Co ions is well reproduced considering that divalent and trivalent Co ions substitute for Mn ions at the perovskite B-sites. For 0 <= y <= 0.3, the Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, and magnetoresi…
The low temperature behavior of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites are known to undergo a transition at $x\sim$0.3, from an insulating ferromagnetic state, at low Ca concentration, to an insulating antiferromagnetic state. Above the onset concentration for the charge-ordering effect ($x\sim 0.3$), a metal-insulator transition induced by an external magnetic field is also observed and related to the collapse of the charge-ordered state. In this paper we show that the ferro-antiferromagnetic transition takes place in an inhomogeneous way: around the critical concentration the sample is a mix…
Neutron scattering measurements on a bilayer manganite near optimal doping show that the short-range polarons correlations are completely dynamic at high T, but then freeze upon cooling to a temperature T* 310 K. This glass transition suggests that the paramagnetic/insulating state arises from an inherent orbital frustration that inhibits the formation of a long range orbital- and charge-ordered state. Upon further cooling into the ferromagnetic-metallic state (Tc=114 K), where the polarons melt, the diffuse scattering quickly develops into a propagating, transverse optic phonon.
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
A detailed investigation of the electronic - and magneto - transport properties of Nd0.8Sr0.2MnO3 with the variation of grain size (down to 42 nm) is presented here. Interestingly, we observe that the ferromagnetic insulating state is suppressed and a metallic state is stabilized as the grain size of the sample is reduced. As a result, metal insulator transition is observed in this low doped manganite which is insulating in nature in its bulk form. Destabilization of polaronic order in the ferromagnetic insulating state due to enhanced surface disorder on grain size reduction has been attribut…
We report a steplike lattice transformation of single crystalline (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$bilayered manganite accompanied by both magnetization and magnetoresistive jumps, and examine the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase accompanied by a huge decrease in resistance. Our findings support that the abrupt magnetostriction is closely related to an orbital frustration existing in the inhomogeneous paramagnetic insulating phase rather than a martensitic scenario between competing …
The one-orbital model for manganites with cooperative phonons and superexchange coupling $J_{\rm AF}$ has been investigated via large-scale Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Results for two-orbitals are also briefly discussed. Focusing on electronic density $n$=0.75, a regime of competition between ferromagnetic (FM) metallic and charge-ordered (CO) insulating states was identified. In the vicinity of the associated bicritical point, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effects were observed. The CMR is associated with the development of short-distance correlations among polarons, above the spin order…
By using the dark-field real-space imaging technique of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have observed slow 200 A-scale fluctuations of charge-ordered (CO) phase in mixed-valent manganites under a strong electron beam irradiation. In addition to these unusual fluctuations of the CO phase, we observed the switching-type fluctuations of electrical resistivity in the same sample, which were found to be as large as several percents. Systematic analysis indicates that these two different types of fluctuations with a similar time scale of the order of seconds are interconnected through a m…
A systematic study of the electronic structure in perovskite manganites is presented. The effective Hamiltonian is derived by taking into account the degeneracy of $e_g$ orbitals and strong electron correlation in Mn ions. The spin and orbital orderings are examined as functions of carrier concentration in the mean-field approximation applied to the effective Hamiltonian. We obtain the first order phase transition between ferromagnetic metallic and ferromagnetic insulating states in the lightly doped region. The transition is accompanied with the orbital order-disorder one which is directly ob…
We argue that in lightly hole doped perovskite-type Mn oxides the holes (Mn$^{4+}$ sites) are surrounded by nearest neighbor Mn$^{3+}$ sites in which the occupied $3d$ orbitals have their lobes directed towards the central hole (Mn$^{4+}$) site and with spins coupled ferromagnetically to the central spin. This composite object, which can be viewed as a combined orbital-spin-lattice polaron, is accompanied by the breathing type (Mn$^{4+}$) and Jahn-Teller type (Mn$^{3+}$) local lattice distortions. We present calculations which indicate that for certain doping levels these orbital polarons may …
Nominally pure undoped parent manganite LaMnO_3 exhibits a puzzling behavior inconsistent with a simple picture of an A-type antiferromagnetic insulator (A-AFI) with a cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering. We do assign its anomalous properties to charge transfer instabilities and competition between insulating A-AFI phase and metallic-like dynamically disproportionated phase formally separated by a first-order phase transition at T_{disp}=T_{JT}\approx 750 K. The unconventional high-temperature phase is addressed to be a specific electron-hole Bose liquid (EHBL) rather than a simple "chemically" d…
We have studied the effect of irreversibility induced by repeated thermal cycles on the electric transport and magnetization of polycrystalline samples of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and La0.325Pr0.3Ca0.375MnO3. An increase of the resistivity and a decrease of the magnetization at different temperature ranges after cycling is obtained in the temperature range between 300 K and 30 K. Both compounds are known to exhibit intrinsic submicrometric coexistence of phases and undergo a sequence of phase transitions related to structural changes. Changes induced by thermal cycling can be partially inhibited by appl…
Charge-ordered manganites of composition $\rm Pr_{1-x}(Ca_{1-y}Sr_{y})_{x}MnO_3$ exhibit persistent photoconductivity upon exposure to x-rays. This is not always accompanied by a significant increase in the {\it number} of conduction electrons as predicted by conventional models of persistent photoconductivity. An analysis of the x-ray diffraction patterns and current-voltage characteristics shows that x-ray illumination results in a microscopically phase separated state in which charge-ordered insulating regions provide barriers against charge transport between metallic clusters. The dominant…
Non-volatile multivalued memory effects caused by magnetic fields, currents, and voltage pulses are studied in Nd_{0.65}Ca_{0.35}MnO_3 and (Nd_{1-y}Sm_{y})_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3 (y=0.75) single crystals in the hysteretic region between ferromagnetic metallic and charge-ordered insulating states. The current/voltage effects observed in this study are explained by the self-heating effect, which enable us to control the colossal electroresistance effects. This thermal-cycle induced switching between electronic solid and liquid states can be regarded as electronic version of atomic crystal/amorphous …
Ultrasonic attenuation and phase velocity measurements have been carried out in the ferromagnetic perovskites La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3 and La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3. Data show that the transition at the Curie temperature, T_C, changes from first- to second-order as Sr replaces Ca in the perovskite. The compound with first-order transition shows also another transition at a temperature T* > T_C. We interpret the temperature window T_C < T < T* as a region of coexistence of a phase separated regime of metallic and insulating regions, in the line of recent theoretical proposals.
A single crystal of 7% Fe-doped (La$_{0.7}$Pr$_{0.3}$)$_{0.65}$Ca$_{0.35}$MnO$_3$ shows up as a typical relaxor ferromagnet, where ferromagnetic metallic and charge-orbital-ordered insulating clusters coexist with controllable volume fraction by external stimuli. There, the persistent ferromagnetic metallic state can be produced by an electric-current excitation as the filamentary region, the magnetization in which is increased by ~0.4$μ_{\rm B}$ per Mn. A clear distinction from the current heating effect in a magnetic field, which conversely leads to a decrease in ferromagnetic fraction, enab…
Recent experimental study reveals the optical conductivity of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ over a wide range of energy and the occurrence of spectral weight transfer as the system transforms from paramagnetic insulating to ferromagnetic metallic phase [Rusydi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 78}, 125110 (2008)]. We propose a model and calculation within the Dynamical Mean Field Theory to explain this phenomenon. We find the role of oxygens in mediating the hopping of electrons between manganeses as the key that determines the structures of the optical conductivity. In addition, by parametrizing the …
We have studied the magneto-elastic coupling in the double layered Mn perovskite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with an ultrasonic velocity technique. The temperature profile of both the in-plane and out-of-plane longitudinal velocities showed a large stiffening anomaly below the insulating paramagnetic to metallic ferromagnetic transition. Magnetic fluctuations effects consistent with the layered structure are evidenced as a frequency dependent velocity softening above the transition. The magneto-elastic coupling has been studied in magnetic field values up to 8 Tesla: the observations are c…
Ferromagnetic/metallic manganese perovskites, such as La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO)are promising materials for the design and implementation of novel spintronic devices working at room temperature. However, their implementation in practical applications has been severely hampered due to the breakdown of their magnetotransport properties at temperatures well below their magnetic transition temperature. This breakdown has been usually associated to surface and interface related problems but its physical origin has not been clearly established yet. In this work we investigate the interface between La2/3S…
Large scale Monte Carlo simulation results for the two-orbital model for manganites, including Jahn-Teller lattice distortions, are here presented. At hole density x=1/4 and in the vicinity of the region of competition between the ferromagnetic metallic and spin-charge-orbital ordered insulating phases, the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) phenomenon is observed with a magnetoresistance ratio ~10,000% Our main result is that this CMR transition is found to be of first order in some portions of the phase diagram, in agreement with early results from neutron scattering, specific heat, and magnet…
Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A$_{1-x}$B$_{x})$MnO$_{3}$, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitax…
By reducing an electronically phase separated manganite (La[1-y]Pr[y])[x]Ca[1-x]MnO3 single crystal thin film to dimensions on the order of the inherent phase domains, it is possible to isolate and monitor the behavior of single domains at a first order transition. At this critical point, it is possible to study the coexistence, formation and annihilation processes of discrete electronic phase domains. With this technique, we make several new observations on the mechanisms leading to the metal insulator transition in manganites. We observe that domain formation is emergent and random, the tran…
Magnetization measurements in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganite show that the high-temperature long-range ferromagnetic-metallic phase transforms to antiferromagnetic-insulating phase, although a fraction of ferromagnetic-metallic phase undergoes glass-like kinetic arrest and coexists at low temperature with the equilibrium antiferromagnetic-insulating phase. We show here through resistivity measurements that the residual arrested ferromagnetic-metallic fraction can be converted to the equilibrium antiferromagnetic-insulating phase by successive annealing at higher temperatures, possibly through hetero…
The effect of cobalt and nickel substitutions for manganese on the physical properties of the perovskite manganite La1.2Bi0.8Mn2-x(Ni/Co)xO6+d, with x = 0.0-0.8, has been investigated. It is observed that the ferromagnetism is enhanced, TC being increased from 103 K for the parent compound (x = 0.0) to 178 K for Ni-phase, and to 181 K for the Co-phase (x = 0.8). Moreover, the systems remain insulating and depict relatively large values of magnetoresistance effect at low temperatures (up to 67 % at 90K and 70 kOe, for x = 0.0 phase). These phenomena are interpreted by means of electronic phase …
One-dimensional (1D) confinement has been revealed to effectively tune the properties of materials in homogeneous states. The 1D physics can be further enriched by electronic inhomogeneity, which unfortunately remains largely unknown. Here we demonstrate the ultra-high sensitivity to magnetic fluctuations and the tunability of phase stability in the electronic transport properties of self-assembled electronically phase-separated manganite nanowires with extreme aspect ratio. The onset of magnetic nano-droplet state, a precursor to the ferromagnetic metallic state, is unambiguously revealed, wh…
We report a comprehensive investigation of La0.2Pr0.4Ca0.4MnO3 to clarify the micrometre scale phase separation phenomenon in the mixed valent manganite (La,Pr,Ca)MnO3. The compound shows multiple magnetic transitions, in which the charge-ordered state is converted into a ferromagnetic state in steps with the application of a magnetic field. The ac susceptibility measurements show that the glassy transition at low temperatures does not depend on the frequency, thus indicating the absence of any spin glass behaviour. Magnetization as well as heat capacity measurements indicate that this low tem…
A recent, major, puzzle in the core-level photoemission spectra of doped manganites is the observation of a 1-2 eV wide shoulder with intensity varying with temperature T as the square of the magnetization over a T scale of order 200K, an order of magnitude less than electronic energies. This is addressed and resolved here, by extending a recently proposed two electron fluid l-b model for these systems to include core-hole effects. The shoulder arises from a rapid redistribution of e_g electron density, as a function of T, between the highly localized (l) and band-like (b) states. Furthermore,…
Antiferromagnetic-insulating(AF-I) and the ferromagnetic-metallic(FM-M) phases coexist in various half-doped manganites over a range of temperature and magnetic field, and this is often believed to be an essential ingredient to their colossal magnetoresistence. We present magnetization and resistivity measurements on Pr(0.5)Ca(0.5)Mn(0.975)Al(0.025)O(3) and Pr(0.5)Sr(0.5)MnO(3) showing that the fraction of the two coexisting phases at low-temperature in any specified measuring field H, can be continuously controlled by following designed protocols traversing field-temperature space; for both m…
We report a series of magnetic and transport measurements on high-quality single crystal samples of colossal magnetoresistive manganites, La_{0.7} Ca_{0.3} Mn O_3 and Pr_{0.7} Sr_{0.3} Mn O_3. 1 % Fe doping allows a Moessbauer spectroscopy study, which shows (i) unusual line broadening within the ferromagnetic phase and (ii) a coexistence of ferro- and paramagnetic contributions in a region, T_1<T<T_2, around the Curie point T_C. In the case of Pr_{0.7} Sr_{0.3} Mn O_3, the resistivity peak occurs at a considerably higher temperature, T_{MI}>T_2. This shows that phase separation into metallic …
A macroscopic phase separation, in which ferromagnetic clusters are observed in an insulating matrix, is sometimes observed, and believed to be essential to the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) properties of manganese oxides. The application of a magnetic field may indeed trigger large magnetoresistance effects due to the percolation between clusters allowing the movement of the charge carriers. However, this macroscopic phase separation is mainly related to extrinsic defects or impurities, which hinder the long-ranged charge-orbital order of the system. We show in the present article that rath…
We have studied the effects of band filling and bandwidth control on the chemical potential in perovskite manganites $R_{1-x}A_x$MnO$_3$ ($R$ : rare earth, $A$ : alkaline earth) by measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. A suppression of the doping-dependent chemical potential shift was observed in and around the CE-type charge-ordered composition range, indicating that there is charge self-organization such as stripe formation or its fluctuations. As a function of bandwidth, we observed a downward chemical potential shift with increasing bandwidth due to the reduction of the orthorh…
