We analyze the dependence of the stellar disc flatness on the galaxy morphological type using 2D decomposition of galaxies from the reliable subsample of the Edge-on Galaxies in SDSS (EGIS) catalogue. Combining these data with the retrieved models of the edge-on galaxies from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G) catalogue, we make the following conclusions:
(1) The disc relative thickness $z_0/h$ in the near- and mid-infrared passbands correlates weakly with morphological type and does not correlate with the bulge-to-total luminosity ratio $B/T$ in all studied bands.
(2) Applying an 1D photometric profile analysis overestimates the disc thickness in galaxies with large bulges making an illusion of the relationship between the disc flattening and the ratio $B/T$.
(3) In our sample the early-type disc galaxies (S0/a) have both flat and "puffed" discs. The early spirals and intermediate-type galaxies have a large scatter of the disc flatness, which can be caused by the presence of a bar: barred galaxies have thicker stellar discs, on average. On the other hand, the late-type spirals are mostly thin galaxies, whereas irregular galaxies have puffed stellar discs.
We characterise the radial density, metallicity and flattening profile of the Milky Way's stellar halo, based on the large sample of 1757 spectroscopically confirmed giant stars from SDSS/SEGUE-2 after excising stars that were algorithmically attributed to apparent halo substructure (including the Sagittarius stream). Compared to BHB stars or RR Lyrae, giants are more readily understood tracers of the overall halo star population, with less bias in age or metallicity. The well-characterized selection function of the sample enables forward modelling of those data, based on ellipsoidal stellar d…
The radial number density and flattening of the Milky Way's stellar halo is measured with $\mathrm{5351}$ metal-poor ([Fe/H]$<-1$) K giants from LAMOST DR3, using a nonparametric method which is model independent and largely avoids the influence of halo substucture. The number density profile is well described by a single power law with index $5.03^{+0.64}_{-0.64}$, and flattening that varies with radius. The stellar halo traced by LAMOST K giants is more flattened at smaller radii, and becomes nearly spherical at larger radii. The flattening, $q$, is about 0.64, 0.8, 0.96 at $r=15$, 20 and 30…

We examine the evolution of dust attenuation curve using a sample of 9504 disk star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the CANDELS and 3D-HST surveys and a new technique relying on the fact that disk SFGs of similar stellar masses at the same cosmic epoch are statistically identical in stellar populations. We attribute the discrepancy in median magnitude between face-on (b/a>0.7) and edge-on (b/a<=0.4) subsamples solely to dust attenuation, and obtain the average attenuation in the rest-frame UV and optical as functions of stellar mass and redshift out to z=2.5. Our results show that the at…
Recently, two-component spherical galaxy models have been presented, where the stellar profile is described by a Jaffe law, and the total density by another Jaffe law, or by an $r^{-3}$ law at large radii. We extend these two families to their ellipsoidal axisymmetric counterparts: the JJe and J3e models. The total and stellar density distributions can have different flattenings and scale lengths, and the dark matter halo is defined by difference. First, the analytical conditions required to have a nowhere negative dark matter halo density are derived. The Jeans equations for the stellar compo…
We present the stellar density profile of the outer halo of the Galaxy traced over a range of Galactocentric radii from $15< R_{GC} < 220$ kpc by blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars. These stars are identified photometrically using deep $u-$band imaging from the new Canada-France-Imaging-Survey (CFIS) that reaches 24.5 mag. This is combined with $griz$ bands from Pan-STARRS 1 and covers a total of $\sim4000$ deg$^2$ of the northern sky. We present a new method to select BHB stars that has low contamination from blue stragglers and high completeness. We use this sample to measure and parameteriz…
We characterize the spatial density of the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) sample of RR Lyrae stars, to study the properties of the old Galactic stellar halo as traced by RRab stars. This sample of 44,403 sources spans Galactocentric radii of $0.55 \; \mathrm{kpc} \leq R_{\mathrm{gc}} \leq 141 \; \mathrm{kpc}$ with a distance precision of 3\% and thus is able to trace the halo out to larger distances than most previous studies. After excising stars that are attributed to dense regions such as stellar streams, the Galactic disc and bulge as well as halo globular clusters, the sample contains ${\sim}11,000$ s…
The virial theorem prescribes the ratio of the globally-averaged equatorial to vertical velocity dispersion of a tracer population in spherical and flattened dark haloes. This gives sequences of physical models in the plane of global anisotropy and flattening. The tracer may have any density, though there are particularly simple results for power-laws and exponentials. We prove the flattening theorem: for a spheroidally stratified tracer density with axis ratio q in a dark density potential with axis ratio g, the ratio of globally averaged equatorial to vertical velocity dispersion depends onl…
Simulations of the clustering of cold dark matter yield dark-matter halos that have central density cusps, but observations of totally dark-matter dominated dwarf spheroidal galaxies imply that they do not have cuspy central density profiles. We use analytic calculations and numerical modelling to argue that whenever stars form, central density cusps are likely to be erased. Gas that accumulates in the potential well of an initially cuspy dark-matter halo settles into a disc. Eventually the surface density of the gas exceeds the threshold for fragmentation into self-gravitating clouds. The clo…
We investigate the median flattening of galaxies at $0.2<z<4.0$ in all five CANDELS/3D-HST fields via the apparent axis ratio $q$. We separate the sample into bins of redshift, stellar-mass, sérsic index, size, and UVJ determined star-forming state to discover the most important drivers of the median $q$ ($q_{med}$). Quiescent galaxies at $z<1$ and $M_{*}>10^{11}M_{\odot}$ are rounder than those at lower masses, consistent with the hypothesis that they have grown significantly through dry merging. The massive quiescent galaxies at higher redshift become flatter, and are as flat as star forming…
We provide a coherent, uniform measurement of the evolution of the logarithmic star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass ($M_*$) relation, called the main sequence of star-forming galaxies (MS), for galaxies out to $z\sim5$. We measure the MS using mean stacks of 3 GHz radio continuum images to derive average SFRs for $\sim$200,000 mass-selected galaxies at $z>0.3$ in the COSMOS field. We describe the MS relation adopting a new model that incorporates a linear relation at low stellar mass (log($M_*$/M$_\odot$)$<$10) and a flattening at high stellar mass that becomes more prominent at low redshi…
We continue the exploration of the BaLROG (Bars in Low Redshift Optical Galaxies) sample: 16 large mosaics of barred galaxies observed with the integral field unit SAURON. We quantify the influence of bars on the composition of the stellar component. We derive linestrength indices of H$β$, Fe5015 and Mgb. Based on single stellar population (SSP) models, we calculate ages, metallicities and [Mg/Fe] abundances and their gradients along the bar major and minor axes. The high spatial resolution of our data allows us to identify breaks among index and SSP profiles, commonly at 0.13$\pm$0.06 bar len…
The low-redshift mass-metallicity relation (MZR) is well studied, but the high-redshift MZR remains difficult to observe. To study the early MZR further, we analyze the Cosmic Reionization on Computers (CROC) simulations with a focus on the MZR from redshifts 5 to 10. We find that, across all redshifts, CROC galaxies exhibit similar stellar-phase and gas-phase MZRs that flatten with higher stellar mass. We attribute this flattening to the inaccurate star formation and feedback modeling in CROC (star formation is overly suppressed in massive CROC galaxies). In addition, we show that the ratio b…
We characterise the oxygen abundance radial distribution of a sample of 102 spiral galaxies observed with VLT/MUSE using the O3N2 calibrator. The high spatial resolution of the data allows us to detect 14345 HII regions with the same image quality as with photometric data, avoiding any dilution effect. We develop a new methodology to automatically fit the abundance radial profiles, finding that 55 galaxies of the sample exhibit a single negative gradient. The remaining 47 galaxies also display, as well as this negative trend, either an inner drop in the abundances (21), an outer flattening (10…
Galaxy integrated Hα star formation rate-stellar mass relation, or SFR(global)-M*(global) relation, is crucial for understanding star formation history and evolution of galaxies. However, many studies have dealt with SFR using unresolved measurements, which makes it difficult to separate out the contamination from other ionizing sources, such as active galactic nuclei and evolved stars. Using the integral field spectroscopic observations from SDSS-IV MaNGA, we spatially disentangle the contribution from different Hα powering sources for ~1000 galaxies. We find that, when including regions domi…
We study the presence and importance of stellar migration in the evolution of 17 Milky-Way like disk galaxies with stellar mass $10 < \textrm{log}(M_{*}/{\rm M}_\odot) < 11$ from the Auriga suite of zoom-in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We compare the birth radii of the stars to their radii at $z=0$ for each system and present mean values of the strength of stellar migration as a function of radius and stellar age which vary between 1-4 kpc. We also investigate the effect of migration on age and metallicity radial profiles in the disks. We find several cases of age gradient flatteni…
Studies of the Galactic Centre suggest that in-situ star formation may have given rise to the observed stellar population near the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Direct evidence for a recent starburst is provided by the currently observed young stellar disc (2-7 Myr) in the central 0.5 pc of the Galaxy. This result suggests that star formation in galactic nuclei may occur close to the SMBH and produce initially flattened stellar discs. Here we explore the possible build-up and evolution of nuclear stellar clusters near SMBHs through in-situ star formation producing stellar discs simil…
We present here the second part of a project that aims at solving the controversy on the issue of the bar effect on the radial distribution of metals in the gas-phase of spiral galaxies. In Paper I we presented a compilation of more than 2800 HII regions belonging to 51 nearby galaxies for which we derived chemical abundances and radial abundance profiles from a homogeneous methodology. In this paper we analyse the derived gas-phase radial abundance profiles of 12+log(O/H) and log(N/O), for barred and unbarred galaxies separately, and find that the differences in slope between barred and unbar…
The projected virial theorem is applied to the case of multiple stellar populations in the nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies. As each population must reside in the same gravitational potential, this provides strong constraints on the nature of the dark matter halo. We derive necessary conditions for two populations with Plummer or exponential surface brightnesses to reside in a cusped Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) halo. We apply our methods to the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal, and show that there is no NFW halo compatible with the energetics of the two populations. The dark halo must possess a core ra…
We study the gas phase metallicity (O/H) and nitrogen abundance gradients traced by star forming regions in a representative sample of 550 nearby galaxies in the stellar mass range $\rm 10^9-10^{11.5} M_\odot$ with resolved spectroscopic data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. Using strong-line ratio diagnostics (R23 and O3N2 for metallicity and N2O2 for N/O) and referencing to the effective (half-light) radius ($\rm R_e$), we find that the metallicity gradient steepens with stellar mass, lying roughly flat among galaxies with $\rm log(M_\star/M_\odot) = 9.0$ but exhibiting slopes as steep as -0.1…
We present the first statistical study on the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) shape of a sample of 83 galactic bars extracted from the CALIFA survey. We use the galaXYZ code to derive the bar intrinsic shape with a statistical approach. The method uses only the geometric information (ellipticities and position angles) of bars and discs obtained from a multi-component photometric decomposition of the galaxy surface-brightness distributions. We find that bars are predominantly prolate-triaxial ellipsoids (68%), with a small fraction of oblate-triaxial ellipsoids (32%). The typical flattening (i…
The nuclear star cluster surrounding the massive black hole at the Galactic Centre consists of young and old stars, with most of the stellar mass in an extended, cuspy distribution of old stars. The compact cluster of young stars was probably born in situ in a massive accretion disc around the black hole. We investigate the effect of the growing gravity of the disc on the orbits of the old stars, using an integrable model of the deformation of a spherical star cluster with anisotropic velocity dispersions. A formula for the perturbed phase space distribution function is derived using linear th…
The combination of strong gravitational lensing and stellar kinematics provides a powerful and robust method to investigate the mass and dynamical structure of early-type galaxies. We demonstrate this approach by analysing two massive ellipticals from the XLENS Survey for which both high-resolution HST imaging and X-Shooter spectroscopic observations are available. We adopt a flexible axisymmetric two-component mass model for the lens galaxies, consisting of a generalised NFW dark halo and a realistic self-gravitating stellar mass distribution. For both systems, we put constraints on the dark …
We develop a flexible set of action-based distribution functions (DFs) for stellar haloes. The DFs have five free parameters, controlling the inner and outer density slope, break radius, flattening and anisotropy respectively. The DFs generate flattened stellar haloes with a rapidly varying logarithmic slope in density, as well as a spherically aligned velocity ellipsoid with a long axis that points towards the Galactic centre - all attributes possessed by the stellar halo of the Milky Way. We use our action-based distribution function to model the blue horizontal branch stars extracted from t…
We investigate the relationship between environment and the galaxy main sequence (the relationship between stellar mass and star formation rate) and also the relationship between environment and radio luminosity (P$_{\rm 1.4GHz}$) to shed new light on the effects of the environments on galaxies. We use the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz catalogue that consists of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quiescent galaxies (AGN) in three different environments (field, filament, cluster) and for three different galaxy types (satellite, central, isolated). We perform for the first time a comparative analysis of the di…
We present the theoretical framework to efficiently solve the Jeans equations for multi-component axisymmetric stellar systems, focusing on the scaling of all quantities entering them. The models may include an arbitrary number of stellar distributions, a dark matter halo, and a central supermassive black hole; each stellar distribution is implicitly described by a two- or three-integral distribution function, and the stellar components can have different structural (density profile, flattening, mass, scale-length), dynamical (rotation, velocity dispersion anisotropy), and population (age, met…
This is the fourth paper in a series in which we attempt to put constraints on the flattening of dark halos in disk galaxies. We observed for this purpose the HI in edge-on galaxies, where it is in principle possible to measure the force field in the halo vertically and radially from gas layer flaring and rotation curve decomposition respectively. We have analysed the HI channel maps to accurately measure all four functions that describe the HI kinematics and 3D distribution: the radial HI surface density, the HI vertical thickness, the rotation curve and the HI velocity dispersion. In this pa…
We present the analytical solution of the two-integrals Jeans equations for Miyamoto-Nagai discs embedded in Binney logarithmic dark matter haloes. The equations can be solved (both with standard methods and with the Residue Theorem) for arbitrary choices of the parameters, thus providing a very flexible two-component galaxy model, ranging from flattened discs to spherical systems. A particularly interesting case is obtained when the dark matter halo reduces to the Singular Isothermal Sphere. Azimuthal motions are separated in the ordered and velocity dispersion components by using the Satoh d…
Stars aligned in thin stream-like features (feathers), with widths of $δ\sim1-10^{\circ}$ and lengths as large as $Δl\sim180^{\circ}$, have been observed towards the Anticenter of our Galaxy and their properties mapped in abundances and phase-space. We study their origin by analysing similar features arising in an N-body simulation of a Galactic disc interacting with a Sagittarius-like dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr). By following the orbits of the particles identified as contributing to feathers backwards in time, we trace their excitation to one of Sgr's previous pericentric passages. These pa…
The detection with of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of dust-rich high redshift galaxies whose cold dust emission is spatially disconnected from the ultraviolet emission bears a challenge for modelling their spectral energy distributions (SED) with codes based on an energy budget between the stellar and dust components. We test the validity of energy balance modelling on a nearby resolved galaxy with vastly different ultraviolet and infrared spatial distributions and infer what information can be reliably retrieved from the analysis of the full spectral energy distribution. We use 1…
We derive the oblateness parameter q of the dark matter halo of a sample of gas rich, face-on disk galaxies. We have assumed that the halos are triaxial in shape but their axes in the disk plane (a and b) are equal, so that q=c/a measures the halo flattening. We have used the HI velocity dispersion, derived from the stacked HI emission lines and the disk surface density to determine the disk potential and the halo shape at the R25 and 1.5R25 radii. We have applied our model to 20 nearby galaxies, of which 6 are large disk galaxies with M(stellar)>10^10 solar mass, 8 have moderate stellar masse…
Using data from four deep fields (COSMOS, AEGIS, ECDFS, and CDFN), we study the correlation between the position of galaxies in the star formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass plane and local environment at $z<1.1$. To accurately estimate the galaxy SFR, we use the deepest available Spitzer/MIPS 24 and Herschel/PACS datasets. We distinguish group environments ( $M_{halo}\sim$10$^{12.5-14.2}$$M_{\odot}$) based on the available deep X-ray data and lower halo mass environments based on the local galaxy density. We confirm that the Main Sequence (MS) of star forming galaxies is not a linear rela…

We reliably extend the stellar mass-size relation over $0.2\leq z \leq2$ to low stellar mass galaxies by combining the depth of Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) with the large volume covered by CANDELS. Galaxies are simultaneously modelled in multiple bands using the tools developed by the MegaMorph project, allowing robust size (i.e., half-light radius) estimates even for small, faint, and high redshift galaxies. We show that above 10$^7$M$_\odot$, star-forming galaxies are well represented by a single power law on the mass-size plane over our entire redshift range. Conversely, the stellar mass-s…
We explore the stellar mass density and colour profiles of 118 low redshift, massive, central galaxies, selected to have assembled 90 percent of their stellar mass 6 Gyr ago, finding evidence of the minor merger activity expected to be the driver behind the size growth of quiescent galaxies. We use imaging data in the $g, r, i, z, y$ bands from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey and perform SED fitting to construct spatially well-resolved radial profiles in colour and stellar mass surface density. Our visual morphological classification reveals that $\sim 42$ percent of our sample displays ti…
We analyze the spatially resolved star formation history of 300 nearby galaxies from the CALIFA integral field spectroscopic survey to investigate the radial structure and gradients of the present day stellar populations properties as a function of Hubble type and galaxy stellar mass. A fossil record method based on spectral synthesis techniques is used to recover spatially and temporally resolved maps of stellar population properties of spheroidal and spiral galaxies with masses $10^9$ to $7 \times 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$. The results show that galaxy-wide spatially averaged stellar population pro…
We performed long-slit spectral observations of two SB-type galaxies: NGC 5347, UGC 1344. They were previously suspected as the galaxies with unusually low mass-to-light ratios (on the ground of mass estimates from the Hi linewidths), which are in conflict with their observed colours. The observations were conducted at the Russian 6-m telescope. The aim of the study was to clarify the kinematics and structure, as well as the properties of stellar populations of the galaxies. The results of observations disproved the peculiarly low mass-to-light ratios of both galaxies. The most probable reason…
Metallicity is one of the crucial factors that determine stellar evolution. To characterize the properties of stellar populations one needs to know the fraction of stars forming at different metallicities. Knowing how this fraction evolves over time is necessary e.g. to estimate the rates of occurrence of any stellar evolution related phenomena (e.g. double compact object mergers, gamma ray bursts). Such theoretical estimates can be confronted with observational limits to validate the assumptions about the evolution of the progenitor system leading to a certain transient. However, to perform t…
We present a semi-analytical model of high redshift galaxy formation. In our model the star formation inside a galaxy is regulated by the feedback from supernova (SNe) driven outflows. We derive a closed analytical form for star formation rate in a single galaxy taking account of the SNe feedback in a self-consistent manner. We show that our model can explain the observed correlation between the stellar mass and the circular velocity of galaxies from dwarf galaxies to massive galaxies of $10^{12} M_\odot$. For small mass dwarf galaxies additional feedback other than supernova feedback is neede…
In earlier work, we showed for the first time that the resolved stellar disk of NGC 300 is very extended with no evidence for truncation, a phenomenon that has since been observed in other disk galaxies. We revisit the outer disk of NGC 300 in order to determine the metallicity of the faint stellar population. With the GMOS camera at Gemini South, we reach 50% completeness at (g', i')=(26.8-27.4,26.1-27.0) in photometric conditions and 0.7" seeing. At these faint depths, careful consideration must be given to the background galaxy population. The mean colors of the outer disk stars fall within…
In this paper are discussed possible many body generalizations of the expanding locally anisotropic metric ansatz with respect to approximately Newtonian gravitational systems. This ansatz consistently describes local point-like matter distributions on the expanding Universe also allowing for a covariant parameterization of gravitational interactions at intermediate length scales. As an example of applicability it is modeled a disk galaxy model matching the physical parameters of the galaxy UGC2885 and it is shown that, by fine-tuning the metric functional parameter, the flattening of the gala…
We present a suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations at z>5 from the Feedback In Realistic Environments project, spanning a halo mass range M_halo~10^8-10^12 M_sun at z=5. We predict the stellar mass-halo mass relation, stellar mass function, and luminosity function in several bands from z=5-12. The median stellar mass-halo mass relation does not evolve strongly at z=5-12. The faint-end slope of the luminosity function steepens with increasing redshift, as inherited from the halo mass function at these redshifts. Below z~6, the stellar mass function and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function s…
The observed massive end of the galaxy stellar mass function is steeper than its predicted dark matter halo counterpart in the standard $Λ$CDM paradigm. In this paper, we investigate the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback on star formation in massive galaxies. We isolate the impact of AGNs by comparing two simulations from the HORIZON suite, which are identical except that one also includes super massive black holes (SMBH), and related feedback models. This allows us to cross-identify individual galaxies between simulations and quantify the effect of AGN feedback on their properti…
We explore the evolution of the stellar mass-size relation of galaxies of different morphological types and specifically bulge and disk components. We use a sample of $\sim35,000$ galaxies within a redshift range $0 < z < 1$, and stellar mass $\log_{10}(\mathrm{M}_*/\mathrm{M}_\odot) \geq 9.5$ volume-limited sample drawn from the combined DEVILS and HST-COSMOS region for which we presented a morphological classification into sub-classes of double-component (BD), pure-disk (pD), elliptical (E), and compact (C) in Paper-I and a structural decomposition into disk (D), diffuse bulge (dB), and comp…
