We present the theoretical framework to efficiently solve the Jeans equations for multi-component axisymmetric stellar systems, focusing on the scaling of all quantities entering them. The models may include an arbitrary number of stellar distributions, a dark matter halo, and a central supermassive black hole; each stellar distribution is implicitly described by a two- or three-integral distribution function, and the stellar components can have different structural (density profile, flattening, mass, scale-length), dynamical (rotation, velocity dispersion anisotropy), and population (age, metallicity, initial mass function, mass-to-light ratio) properties. In order to determine the ordered rotational velocity and the azimuthal velocity dispersion fields of each component, we introduce a decomposition that can be used when the commonly adopted Satoh decomposition cannot be applied. The scheme developed is particularly suitable for a numerical implementation; we describe its realisation within our code JASMINE2, optimised to maximally exploit the scalings allowed by the Poisson and the Jeans equations, also in the post-processing procedures. As applications, we illustrate the building of three multi-component galaxy models with two distinct stellar populations, a central black hole, and a dark matter halo; we also study the solution of the Jeans equations for an exponential thick disc, and for its multi-component representation as the superposition of three Miyamoto-Nagai discs. A useful general formula for the numerical evaluation of the gravitational potential of factorised thick discs is finally given.

I present a flexible solution for the axisymmetric Jeans equations of stellar hydrodynamics under the assumption of an anisotropic (three-integral) velocity ellipsoid aligned with the spherical polar coordinate system. I describe and test a robust and efficient algorithm for its numerical computation. I outline the evaluation of the intrinsic velocity moments and the projection of all first and second velocity moments, including both the line-of-sight velocities and the proper motions. This spherically-aligned Jeans Anisotropic Modelling (JAM_sph) method can describe in detail the photometry a…
In low-mass galaxies, stellar feedback can drive gas outflows that generate non-equilibrium fluctuations in the gravitational potential. Using cosmological zoom-in baryonic simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project, we investigate how these fluctuations affect stellar kinematics and the reliability of Jeans dynamical modeling in low-mass galaxies. We find that stellar velocity dispersion and anisotropy profiles fluctuate significantly over the course of galaxies' starburst cycles. We therefore predict an observable correlation between star formation rate and stella…
Cappellari (2008) presented a flexible and efficient method to model the stellar kinematics of anisotropic axisymmetric and spherical stellar systems. The spherical formalism could be used to model the line-of-sight velocity second moments allowing for essentially arbitrary radial variation in the anisotropy and general luminous and total density profiles. Here we generalize the spherical formalism by providing the expressions for all three components of the projected second moments, including the two proper motion components. A reference implementation is now included in the public JAM packag…
Using a flexible galactic model with variable stellar velocity anisotropy, I apply the classical Jeans mass modeling approach to the five dwarf spheroidal galaxies with the largest homogeneous datasets of stellar line-of-sight velocities (between 330 and 2500 stars per galaxy) -- Carina, Fornax, Leo~I, Sculptor, and Sextans. I carry out an exhaustive model parameter search, assigning absolute probabilities to each parameter combination. My main finding is that there is a well defined radius (unique for each galaxy) where the Jeans analysis constraints on the enclosed mass are tightest, and are…
The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a flattened stellar structure that dominates the gravitational potential of the Milky Way at Galactocentric radii $30 \lesssim R \lesssim 300{\, \rm pc}$. In this paper, we construct axisymmetric Jeans dynamical models of the NSD based on previous photometric studies and we fit them to line-of-sight kinematic data of APOGEE and SiO maser stars. We find that (i) the NSD mass is lower but consistent with the mass independently determined from photometry by Launhardt et al. (2002). Our fiducial model has a mass contained within spherical radius $r=100{\, \rm pc}$…
We assess the effectiveness of the Jeans-Anisotropic-MGE (JAM) technique with a state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamic simulation, the Illustris project. We perform JAM modelling on 1413 simulated galaxies with stellar mass M^* > 10^{10}M_{sun}, and construct an axisymmetric dynamical model for each galaxy. Combined with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, we recover the projected root-mean-square velocity (V_rms) field of the stellar component, and investigate constraints on the stellar mass-to-light ratio, M^*/L, and the fraction of dark matter f_{DM} within 2.5 effective radii…
Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs, 10^2-10^5 M_sun) fill the gap between stellar-mass black holes and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Simulations have shown that IMBHs may form in dense star clusters, and therefore may still be present in these smaller stellar systems. We investigate the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5286 for indications of a central IMBH using spectroscopic data from VLT/FLAMES, velocity measurements from the Rutgers Fabry Perot at CTIO, and photometric data from HST. We run analytic spherical and axisymmetric Jeans models with different central black-hole masses, anisot…
We present the analytical solution of the two-integrals Jeans equations for Miyamoto-Nagai discs embedded in Binney logarithmic dark matter haloes. The equations can be solved (both with standard methods and with the Residue Theorem) for arbitrary choices of the parameters, thus providing a very flexible two-component galaxy model, ranging from flattened discs to spherical systems. A particularly interesting case is obtained when the dark matter halo reduces to the Singular Isothermal Sphere. Azimuthal motions are separated in the ordered and velocity dispersion components by using the Satoh d…
We lay out and apply methods to use proper motions of individual kinematic tracers for estimating the dynamical mass of star clusters. We first describe a simple projected mass estimator and then develop an approach that evaluates directly the likelihood of the discrete kinematic data given the model predictions. Those predictions may come from any dynamical modelling approach, and we implement an analytic King model, a spherical isotropic Jeans equation model and an axisymmetric, anisotropic Jeans equation model. We apply these approaches to the enigmatic globular cluster omega Centauri, combi…
Spherical Jeans modeling is widely used to estimate mass profiles of systems from star clusters to galactic stellar haloes to clusters of galaxies. It derives the cumulative mass profile, M(<r), from kinematics of tracers of the potential under the assumptions of spherical symmetry and dynamical equilibrium. We consider the application of Jeans modeling to mapping the dark matter distribution in the outer reaches of the Milky Way using field halo stars. We present a novel non-parametric routine for solving the spherical Jeans equation by fitting B-splines to the velocity and density profiles o…
From Rybicki's analysis using the Fourier slice theorem, mathematically it is possible to reproduce uniquely an edge-on axisymmetric galaxy's 3D light distribution from its 2D surface brightness. Utilizing galaxies from a cosmological simulation, we examine the ability of Syer and Tremaine's made-to-measure method and Schwarzschild's method for stellar dynamical modeling to do so for edge-on oblate axisymmetric galaxies. Overall, we find that the methods do not accurately recover the 3D distributions, with the made-to-measure method producing more accurate estimates than Schwarzschild's method…
The gravitational potentials of realistic galaxy models are in general non-integrable, in the sense that they admit orbits that do not have three independent isolating integrals of motion and are therefore chaotic. However, if chaotic orbits are a small minority in a stellar system, it is expected that they have negligible impact on the main dynamical properties of the system. In this paper we address the question of quantifying the importance of chaotic orbits in a stellar system, focusing, for simplicity, on axisymmetric systems. Chaotic orbits have been found in essentially all (non-Stäckel…
We study the Resonant Relaxation (RR) of an axisymmetric low mass (or Keplerian) stellar disc orbiting a more massive black hole (MBH). Our recent work on the general kinetic theory of RR is simplified in the standard manner by ignoring the effects of `gravitational polarization', and applied to a zero-thickness, flat, axisymmetric disc. The wake of a stellar orbit is expressed in terms of the angular momenta exchanged with other orbits, and used to derive a kinetic equation for RR under the combined actions of self-gravity, 1 PN and 1.5 PN relativistic effects of the MBH and an arbitrary exte…
Recent mid-infrared observations of young stellar objects have found significant variations possibly indicative of changes in the structure of the circumstellar disk. Previous models of this variability have been restricted to axisymmetric perturbations in the disk. We consider simple models of a non-axisymmetric variation in the inner disk, such as a warp or a spiral wave. We find that the precession of these non-axisymmetric structures produce negligible flux variations but a change in the height of these structures can lead to significant changes in the mid-infrared flux. Applying these mod…

Observations of star-forming galaxies at high-z have suggested discrepancies in the inferred star formation rates (SFRs) either between data and models, or between complementary measures of the SFR. These putative discrepancies could all be alleviated if the stellar IMF is systematically weighted toward more high-mass star formation in rapidly star-forming galaxies. Here, we explore how the IMF might vary under the central assumption that the turnover mass in the IMF, Mc, scales with the Jeans mass in giant molecular clouds (GMCs), M_J. We employ hydrodynamic and radiative transfer simulations…

Two families of models compete to explain the formation of high-mass stars. The quasi-static models predict the existence of high-mass pre-stellar cores sustained by a high degree of turbulence while competitive accretion models predict that high-mass proto-stellar cores evolve from low/intermediate mass proto-stellar cores in dynamic environments. We present ALMA (1.4 mm continuum emission and $^{12}$CO emission line) and MOPRA (HCO$^{+}$, H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and N$_2$H$^+$ molecular line emissions) observations of a sample of 9 starless massive dense cores (MDCs) discovered in a recent Herschel…
It is known that two supermassive black holes (SMBHs) cannot merge in a spherical galaxy within a Hubble time; an emerging picture is that galaxy geometry, rotation, and large potential perturbations may usher the SMBH binary through the critical three-body scattering phase and ultimately drive the SMBH to coalesce. We explore the orbital content within an N-body model of a mildly- flattened, non-rotating, SMBH-embedded elliptical galaxy. When used as the foundation for a study on the SMBH binary coalescence, the black holes bypassed the binary stalling often seen within spherical galaxies and…
The discovery of the ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 and its peculiar population of star clusters has raised new questions about the connections between galaxies and dark matter halos at the extremes of galaxy formation. In light of debates over the measured velocity dispersion of its star clusters and the associated mass estimate, we constrain mass models of DF2 using its observed kinematics with a range of priors on the halo mass. Models in which the galaxy obeys a standard stellar-halo mass relation are in tension with the data and also require a large central density core. Better fits ar…
We present comprehensive multi-component dynamical models of M54 (NGC6715), the nuclear star cluster of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr), which is undergoing a tidal disruption in the Milky Way halo. Previous papers in the series used a large MUSE mosaic data set to identify multiple stellar populations in the system and study their kinematic differences. Here we use Jeans-based dynamical models that fit the population properties (mean age and metallicity), spatial distributions, and kinematics simultaneously. They provide a solid physical explanation to our previous findings. The population…
The Milky Way (MW) remains a primary laboratory for understanding the structure and evolution of spiral galaxies, but typically we are denied clear views of MW stellar populations at low Galactic latitudes because of extinction by interstellar dust. However, the combination of 2MASS near-infrared (NIR) and Spitzer-IRAC mid-infrared (MIR) photometry enables a powerful method for determining the line of sight reddening to any star: the sampled wavelengths lie in the Rayleigh-Jeans part of the spectral energy distribution of most stars, where, to first order, all stars have essentially the same i…
We search for evidence of dark matter in the Milky Way by utilizing the stellar number density distribution and kinematics measured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to heliocentric distances exceeding ~10 kpc. We employ the cylindrically symmetric form of Jeans equations and focus on the morphology of the resulting acceleration maps, rather than the normalization of the total mass as done in previous, mostly local, studies. Jeans equations are first applied to a mock catalog based on a cosmologically derived N-body + SPH simulation, and the known acceleration (gradient of gravitational p…
Context: The modelling of stationary galactic stellar populations can be performed using distribution functions. Aims: This paper aims to write explicit integrals of motion and distribution functions. Methods: We propose an analytic formulation of the integrals of motion with an explicit dependence on potential. This formulation applies to potentials with rotational symmetry or triaxial symmetry. It is exact for Stäckel potentials and approximate for other potentials. Results: Modelling a stationary stellar population using these integrals of motion allows the force field to be found with sati…
The self-consistent vertical density distribution in a thin, isothermal disc is typically given by a sech^2 law, as shown in the classic work by Spitzer (1942). This is obtained assuming that the radial and vertical motions are decoupled and only the vertical term is used in the Poisson equation. We argue that in the region of low density as in the outer disc this treatment is no longer valid. We develop a general, complete model that includes both radial and vertical terms in the Poisson equation and write these in terms of the full radial and vertical Jeans equations which take account of th…
It has been well-established that particular centrophilic orbital families in non-spherical galaxies can, in principle, drive a black hole binary to shrink its orbit through three-body scattering until the black holes are close enough to strongly emit gravitational waves. Most of these studies rely on orbital analysis of a static SMBH-embedded galaxy potential to support this view; it is not clear, however, how these orbits transform as the second SMBH enters the center, so our understanding of which orbits actually interact with a SMBH binary is not ironclad. Here, we analyze two flattened ga…
Context. Dynamically self-consistent galactic models are necessary for analysing and interpreting star counts, stellar density distributions, and stellar kinematics in order to understand the formation and the evolution of our Galaxy. Aims. We modify and improve the dynamical self-consistency of the Besançon Galaxy model in the case of a stationary and axisymmetric gravitational potential. Methods. Each stellar orbit is modelled by determining a Staeckel approximate integral of motion. Generalised Shu distribution functions with three integrals of motion are used to model the stellar distribut…
When a subhalo interacts with a cold stellar stream it perturbs its otherwise nearly smooth distribution of stars, and this leads to the creation of a gap. The properties of such gaps depend on the parameters of the interaction. Their characterisation could thus lead to the determination of the mass spectrum of the perturbers and possibly reveal the existence of dark subhalos orbiting the Milky Way. Our goal is to construct a fully analytical model of the formation and evolution of gaps embedded in streams orbiting in a realistic Milky Way potential. To this end, we extend the model of Helmi &…
We examine the cosmic evolution of a stellar initial mass function (IMF) in galaxies that varies with the Jeans mass in the interstellar medium, paying particular attention to the K-band stellar mass to light ratio (M/L_K) of present-epoch massive galaxies. We calculate the typical Jeans mass using high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations coupled with a fully radiative model for the ISM, which yields a parameterisation of the IMF characteristic mass as a function of galaxy star formation rate (SFR). We then calculate the star formation histories of galaxies utilising an equilibrium galaxy grow…
A widely employed method for estimating the mass of stellar systems with apparent spherical symmetry is dynamical modelling using the spherically symmetric Jeans equation. Unfortunately this approach suffers from a degeneracy between the assumed mass density and the second order velocity moments. This degeneracy can lead to significantly different predictions for the mass content of the system under investigation, and thus poses a barrier for accurate estimates of the dark matter content of astrophysical systems. In a series of papers we describe an algorithm that removes this degeneracy and a…
The spherical Jeans equation is a widely used tool for dynamical study of gravitating systems in astronomy. Here we test its efficacy in robustly weighing the mass of Milky Way analogues, given they need not be in equilibrium or even spherical. Utilizing Milky Way stellar halos simulated in accordance with $Λ{\rm CDM}$ cosmology by Bullock and Johnston (2005) and analysing them under the Jeans formalism, we recover the underlying mass distribution of the parent galaxy, within distance $r/{\rm kpc}\in[10,100]$, with a bias of $\sim12\%$ and a dispersion of $\sim14\%$. Additionally, the mass pro…
Although still under debate, observations generally suggest that dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies exhibit large constant-density cores in the centers, which can hardly be explained by dissipationless cold dark matter simulations without baryonic feedback. Wave dark matter (${ψ{\rm DM}}$), characterized by a single parameter, the dark matter particle mass $m_ψ$, predicts a central soliton core in every galaxy arising from quantum pressure against gravity. Here we apply Jeans analysis assuming a soliton core profile to the kinematic data of eight classical dSphs so as to constrain $m_ψ$, and obt…
The spherical Jeans equation is widely used to estimate the mass content of a stellar systems with apparent spherical symmetry. However, this method suffers from a degeneracy between the assumed mass density and the kinematic anisotropy profile, $β(r)$. In a previous work, we laid the theoretical foundations for an algorithm that combines smoothing B-splines with equations from dynamics to remove this degeneracy. Specifically, our method reconstructs a unique kinematic profile of $σ_{rr}^2$ and $σ_{tt}^2$ for an assumed free functional form of the potential and mass density $(Φ,ρ)$ and given a…
JWST/MIRI imaging of the nearby galaxies IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365 and NGC 7496 from PHANGS reveals a richness of gas structures that in each case form a quasi-regular network of interconnected filaments, shells and voids. We examine whether this multi-scale network of structure is consistent with the fragmentation of the gas disk through gravitational instability. We use FilFinder to detect the web of filamentary features in each galaxy and determine their characteristic radial and azimuthal spacings. These spacings are then compared to estimates of the most Toomre-unstable length (a few kpc…
We report ALMA Band 6 continuum observations of 2000 AU resolution toward four massive molecular clouds in the Central Molecular Zone of the Galaxy. To study gas fragmentation, we use the dendrogram method to identify cores as traced by the dust continuum emission. The four clouds exhibit different fragmentation states at the observed resolution despite having similar masses at the cloud scale ($\sim$1--5 pc). Assuming a constant dust temperature of 20 K, we construct core mass functions of the clouds and find a slightly top-heavy shape as compared to the canonical initial mass function, but w…
Using three-dimensional stellar kinematic data from simulated galaxies, we examine the efficacy of a Jeans equation analysis in reconstructing the total disk surface density, including the dark matter, at the "Solar" radius. Our simulation dataset includes galaxies formed in a cosmological context using state-of-the-art high resolution cosmological zoom simulations, and other idealised models. The cosmologically formed galaxies have been demonstrated to lie on many of the observed scaling relations for late-type spirals, and thus offer an interesting surrogate for real galaxies with the obviou…
We provide prescriptions to evaluate the dynamical mass ($M_{\rm dyn}$) of galaxies from kinematic measurements of stars or gas using analytic considerations and the VELA suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations at $z=1-5$. We find that Jeans or hydrostatic equilibrium is approximately valid for galaxies of stellar masses above $M_\star \!\sim\! 10^{9.5}M_\odot$ out to $5$ effective radii ($R_e$). When both measurements of the rotation velocity $v_ϕ$ and of the radial velocity dispersion $σ_r$ are available, the dynamical mass $M_{\rm dyn} \!\simeq\! G^{-1} V_c^2 r$ can be evaluated from the …
Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies are among the most promising targets for the indirect detection of dark matter (DM) from annihilation and/or decay products. Empirical estimates of their DM content - and hence the magnitudes of expected signals - rely on inferences from stellar-kinematic data. However, various kinematic analyses can give different results and it is not obvious which are most reliable. Using extensive sets of mock data of various sizes (mimicking 'ultra-faint' and 'classical' dSphs) and an MCMC engine, here we investigate biases, uncertainties, and limitations of analyses based…
We examine variations of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in extreme environments within the formalism derived by Hennebelle \& Chabrier. We focus on conditions encountered in progenitors of massive early type galaxies and starburst regions. We show that, when applying the concept of turbulent Jeans mass as the characteristic mass for fragmentation in a turbulent medium, instead of the standard thermal Jeans mass for purely gravitational fragmentation, the peak of the IMF in such environments is shifted towards smaller masses, leading to a bottom-heavy IMF, as suggested by various obser…
We determine the dynamical black hole mass in NGC404 including modeling of the nuclear stellar populations. We combine \hst/STIS spectroscopy with WFC3 images to create a local color-\ml~relation derived from stellar population modeling of the STIS data. We then use this to create a mass model for the nuclear region. We use Jeans modeling to fit this mass model to adaptive optics stellar kinematic observations from Gemini/NIFS. From our stellar dynamical modeling, we find a 3$σ$ upper limit on the black hole mass of $1.5\times10^5$\Msun.
We probe the feasibility of describing the structure of a multi-component axisymmetric galaxy with a dynamical model based on the Jeans equations while taking into account a third integral of motion. We demonstrate that using the third integral in the form derived by G. Kuzmin, it is possible to calculate the stellar kinematics of a galaxy from the Jeans equations by integrating the equations along certain characteristic curves. In cases where the third integral of motion does not describe the system exactly, the derived kinematics would describe the galaxy only approximately. We apply our met…
NGC 4258 is the galaxy with the most accurate (maser-based) determination for the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in its nucleus. In this work we present a two-dimensional mapping of the stellar kinematics in the inner 3.0 x 3.0 arcsec = 100 x 100 pc of NGC 4258 using adaptative-optics observations obtained with the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph of the GEMINI North telescope at a 0.11 arcsec (4 pc) angular resolution. The observations resolve the radius of influence of the SMBH, revealing an abrupt increase in the stellar velocity dispersion within 10 pc from the nucleus…
A new two-parametric family of mass distribution for spherical stellar systems is considered. It generalizes families by Kuzmin, Veltmann (1972) and by An, Evans (2006). Steady velocity dispersions are found for these models by solving an equation of hydrostatic equilibrium. Axisymmetric generalizations of the model are discussed.
Spiral structure in disk galaxies could arise from transient modes that create conditions conducive for their regeneration; this is the proposal of Sellwood and Carlberg, based on simulations of stellar disks. The linear response of an axisymmetric stellar disk, to an adiabatic non-axisymmetric transient mode, gives a final distribution function (DF) that is equal to the initial DF everywhere in phase space, except at the Lindblad and corotation resonances where the final DF is singular. We use the nonlinear theory of adiabatic capture into resonance to resolve the singularities and calculate …
While the stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) appears to be close to universal within the Milky Way galaxy, it is strongly suspected to be different in the primordial Universe, where molecular hydrogen cooling is less efficient and the gas temperature can be higher by a factor of 30. In between these extreme cases, the gas temperature varies depending on the environment, metallicity and radiation background. In this paper we explore if changes of the gas temperature affect the IMF of the stars considering fragmentation and accretion. The fragmentation behavior depends mostly on the Jeans mass …
We measured stellar velocity dispersions sigma and dynamical masses of 9 massive (M~10^11 Msun) early-type galaxies (ETG) from the GMASS sample at redshift 1.4<z<2.0. The sigma are based on individual spectra for two galaxies at z~1.4 and on a stacked spectrum for 7 galaxies with 1.6<z<2.0, with 202-h of exposure at the ESO Very Large Telescope. We constructed detailed axisymmetric dynamical models for the objects, based on the Jeans equations, taking the observed surface brightness (from deep HST/ACS observations), PSF and slit effects into account. Our dynamical masses M_Jeans agree within ~…
We attempt to measure the density of dark matter in the two Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies Fornax and Sculptor using a new method which employs Jeans equations based on both the second and fourth moment of the Collisionless Boltzmann Equation (i.e. variance and kurtosis of line of sight stellar velocities). Unlike previous related efforts, we allow the anisotropy of the radial and tangential second and fourth order moments to vary independently of each other. We apply the method to simulated data and establish that to some degree it appears to be able to break the degeneracies associated with secon…
Mock member stars for 28 dwarf galaxies are constructed from the cosmological Auriga simulation, which reflect the dynamical status of realistic stellar tracers. The axis-symmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) modeling is applied to 6,000 star particles for each system, to recover the underlying matter distribution. The stellar or dark matter component individually is poorly recovered, but the total profile is constrained more reasonably. The mass within the half-mass radius of tracers is recovered the tightest, and the mass between 200 and 300 pc, $M(200-300\mathrm{pc})$, …
The distribution of dark matter in dwarf galaxies can have important implications on our understanding of galaxy formation as well as the particle physics properties of dark matter. However, accurately characterizing the dark matter content of dwarf galaxies is challenging due to limited data and complex dynamics that are difficult to accurately model. In this paper, we apply spherical Jeans modeling to simulated stellar kinematic data of spherical, isotropic dwarf galaxies with the goal of identifying the future observational directions that can improve the accuracy of the inferred dark matte…
