Galaxy integrated Hα star formation rate-stellar mass relation, or SFR(global)-M*(global) relation, is crucial for understanding star formation history and evolution of galaxies. However, many studies have dealt with SFR using unresolved measurements, which makes it difficult to separate out the contamination from other ionizing sources, such as active galactic nuclei and evolved stars. Using the integral field spectroscopic observations from SDSS-IV MaNGA, we spatially disentangle the contribution from different Hα powering sources for ~1000 galaxies. We find that, when including regions dominated by all ionizing sources in galaxies, the spatially-resolved relation between Hα surface density (ΣHα(all)) and stellar mass surface density (Σ*(all)) progressively turns over at high Σ*(all) end for increasing M*(global) and bulge dominance (bulge-to-total light ratio, B/T). This in turn leads to the flattening of the integrated Hα(global)-M*(global) relation in the literature. By contrast, there is no noticeable flattening in both integrated Hα(HII)-M*(HII) and spatially-resolved ΣHα(HII)-Σ*(HII) relations when only regions where star formation dominates the ionization are considered. In other words, the flattening can be attributed to the increasing regions powered by non-star-formation sources, which generally have lower ionizing ability than star formation. Analysis of the fractional contribution of non-star-formation sources to total Hα luminosity of a galaxy suggests a decreasing role of star formation as an ionizing source toward high-mass, high-B/T galaxies and bulge regions. This result indicates that the appearance of the galaxy integrated SFR-M* relation critically depends on their global properties (M*(global) and B/T) and relative abundances of various ionizing sources within the galaxies.
We provide a catalog of visually classified objects in the MaNGA integral field spectroscopic survey. The MaNGA survey is designed to target a single galaxy with each of its integral field units; however, many of these fields will host ancillary objects. We identify these discrete objects by cleaning up SDSS photometric objects in MaNGA's fields-of-view. We then use the spectra from MaNGA's data cubes to spectrally classify the identified objects. The catalog contains the positions and classifications of 1385 stars, 11,439 galaxies, and 107 broad-line active galactic nucleus (BLAGN) from the 1…
We have discovered a population of 29 outlying H$α$ emitters which appear like unresolved blobs in the DR14 data release of the SDSS IV MaNGA integral field unit survey. They do not have any underlying optical continuum emission in deep imaging from the DECam Legacy Survey or Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey. These blobs either lie away from the disc of the host galaxy in the MaNGA IFU and/or have velocities which are different from the velocity map of the host galaxy. Interestingly, all of them show photoionisation due to star formation. These galaxies have very high specific star formation rates c…
To investigate star-forming activities in early-type galaxies, we select a sample of 52 star-forming S0 galaxies (SFS0s) from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We find that SFS0s have smaller stellar mass compared to normal S0s in MaNGA. After matching the stellar mass to select the control sample, we find that the mean Sérsic index of SFS0s' bulges (1.76$\pm$0.21) is significantly smaller than that of the control sample (2.57$\pm$0.20), suggesting the existence of a pseudo bulge in SFS0s. After introducing the environmental information, SFS0s show smaller spin parameters in the field than in groups, …
Large galaxy surveys have demonstrated that galaxy-galaxy mergers can dramatically change the morphologies, star formation rates (SFRs) and metallicities of their constituents. However, most statistical studies have been limited to the measurement of global quantities, through large fibres or integrated colours. In this work, we present the first statistically significant study of spatially resolved star formation and metallicity profiles using integral field spectroscopy, using a sample of $\sim$20,000 spaxels in 36 visually selected post-merger galaxies from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies with …
The tight correlation between total galaxy stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) has become known as the star forming main sequence. Using ~487,000 spaxels from galaxies observed as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Mapping Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, we confirm previous results that a correlation also exists between the surface densities of star formation (Sigma_SFR) and stellar mass (Sigma_mass) on kpc scales, representing a `resolved' main sequence. Using a new metric (Delta Sigma_SFR), which measures the relative enhancement or deficit of star formation on …
We have carried out a systematic search for outlying H$α$ emitters in the entire data release 14 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. We have discovered six outlying H$α$ emitters with no bright underlying optical continuum emission in the imaging data release 5 from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) and data release 6 of the Mayall $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS) + Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS). They also show a velocity field which is different from that of the host galaxy. These outlying H$α$ emitters all have extended struct…
In this paper we use strong line calibrations of N/O and O/H in MaNGA spaxel data to explore the systematics introduced by variations in N/O on various strong-line metallicity diagnostics. We find radial variations in N/O at fixed O/H which correlate with total galaxy stellar-mass; and which can induce $\sim 40 \%$ systematic uncertainties in oxygen abundance gradients when nitrogen-dependent abundance calibrations are used. Empirically, we find that these differences are associated with variation in the local star formation efficiency, as predicted by recent chemical evolution models for gala…
The metallicity of local galaxies is tightly related not only to stellar mass, i.e. the mass-metallicity relation, but also to the star formation rate (SFR) through the so-called fundamental metallicity relation (FMR); more active galaxies show lower metallicities at fixed mass. Interestingly, high-z galaxies up to z~2.5 follow the same relation defined by SDSS locally. However, different shapes have been proposed for local galaxies, and the existence of a FMR and the role of the SFR has been recently questioned by some authors. In this paper we first discuss the various parametrizations of th…
We introduce the Swift/UVOT+MaNGA (SwiM) value added catalog, which comprises 150 galaxies that have both SDSS/MaNGA integral field spectroscopy and archival Swift/UVOT near-UV (NUV) images. The similar angular resolution between the three Swift/UVOT NUV images and the MaNGA maps allows for a high-resolution comparison of optical and NUV indicators of star formation, crucial for constraining quenching and attenuation in the local universe. The UVOT NUV images, SDSS images, and MaNGA emission line and spectral index maps have all been spatially matched and re-projected to match the point spread…
SDSS-IV MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is the largest integral-field spectroscopy survey to date, aiming to observe a statistically representative sample of 10,000 low-redshift galaxies. In this paper we study the reliability of the emission-line fluxes and kinematic properties derived by the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP). We describe the algorithmic choices made in the DAP with regards to measuring emission-line properties, and the effect of our adopted strategy of simultaneously fitting the continuum and line emission. The effect of random errors are quantif…
We present new observations of two z=0.12 strong-lensing elliptical galaxies, originally discovered from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, using the new FOCAS IFU spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope. For J1436+4943, our observations confirm the identification of this system as a multiple-image lens, in a cusp configuration, with Einstein radius $θ_{Ein}$=2.0 arcsec. For J1701+3722, the improved data confirm earlier hints of a complex source plane, with different configurations evident in different emission lines. The new observations reveal a previously unseen inner counter-image to the [OIII] arc fo…
We present the integrated stellar mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for more than 1700 galaxies included in the integral field area SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. The spatially resolved data allow us to determine the metallicity at the same physical scale (effective radius in arcsecs, $\mathrm{R_{eff}}$ ) using a heterogeneous set of ten abundance calibrators. Besides scale factors, the shape of the MZR is similar for all calibrators, consistent with those reported previously using single-fiber and integral field spectroscopy. We compare the residuals of this relation against the star formation rate (SFR…
We study the radial acceleration relation (RAR) for early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the SDSS MaNGA MPL5 dataset. The complete ETG sample show a slightly offset RAR from the relation reported by McGaugh et al. (2016) at the low-acceleration end; we find that the deviation is due to the fact that the slow rotators show a systematically higher acceleration relation than the McGaugh's RAR, while the fast rotators show a consistent acceleration relation to McGaugh's RAR. There is a 1σsignificant difference between the acceleration relations of the fast and slow rotators, suggesting that the accelerat…
With the goal of investigating the degree to which the total infrared luminosity ($L_{\rm TIR}$) traces the star formation rate (SFR), we analyze the $L_{\rm TIR}$ from the dust in a sample of $\sim$ 6000 star-forming galaxies, based on the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 $μ$m data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and u, g, r, i, z band data from SDSS DR9. These star-forming galaxies are selected by matching the WISE All Sky Catalog with the star-forming galaxy catalog in SDSS DR9 provided by JHU/MPA\thanks{$http://www.sdss3.org/dr9/spectro/spectroaccess.php$}. The values of $L_{\rm TIR…
We present the first asymmetric drift (AD) measurements for unresolved stellar populations of different characteristic ages above and below 1.5 Gyr. These measurements sample the age-velocity relation (AVR) in galaxy disks. In this first paper we develop two efficient algorithms to extract AD on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis from optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data-cubes. The algorithms apply different spectral templates, one using simple stellar populations and the other a stellar library; their comparison allows us to assess systematic errors in derived multi-component velocities, suc…
We present a study of the kinematics of the extraplanar ionized gas around several dozen galaxies observed by the Mapping of Nearby Galaxies at the Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We considered a sample of 67 edge-on galaxies out of more than 1400 extragalactic targets observed by MaNGA, in which we found 25 galaxies (or 37%) with regular lagging of the rotation curve at large distances from the galactic midplane. We model the observed $Hα$ emission velocity fields in the galaxies, taking projection effects and a simple model for the dust extinction into the account. We show that the …
Star formation rate density, $Σ_{\rm SFR}$, has shown a remarkable correlation with both components of the baryonic mass at kpc scales (i.e., the stellar mass density, and the molecular gas mass density; $Σ_{\ast}$, and $Σ_{\rm mol}$, respectively) for galaxies in the nearby Universe. In this study we propose an empirical relation between $Σ_{\rm SFR}$ and the baryonic mass surface density ($Σ_{\rm b}$ =$Σ_{\rm mol,Av}$ + $Σ_{\ast}$; where $Σ_{\rm mol,Av}$ is the molecular gas density derived from the optical extinction, Av) at kpc scales using the spatially-resolved properties of the MaNGA su…
Gas-phase abundances and abundance gradients provide much information on past stellar generations, and are powerful probes of how galaxies evolve. Gas abundance gradients in galaxies have been studied as functions of galaxies' mass and size individually, but have largely not been considered across the galaxy mass--size plane. Thus, we investigate gas-phase abundance gradients across this plane, using a sample of over 1000 galaxies selected from the MApping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) spectroscopic survey. We find that gradients vary systematically such that above $10^{10}M_{\odot}$, smaller…
Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies are a rare population of galaxies that host living high-mass stars during their WR phase (i.e. WR stars) and are thus expected to provide interesting constraints on the stellar Initial Mass Function, massive star formation, stellar evolution models, etc. Spatially resolved spectroscopy should in principle provide a more efficient way of identifying WR galaxies than single-fiber surveys of galactic centers such as SDSS-I & II, as WR stars should be more preferentially found in discs. Using IFU data from the ongoing SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, we have performed a thorough sear…
We present a sample of 48 nearby galaxies with central, biconical outflows identified by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. All considered galaxies have star formation driven bi-conical central outflows (SFB), with no signs of AGN. We find that the SFB outflows require high central concentration of the star formation rate. This increases the gas velocity dispersion over the equilibrium limit and helps maintain the gas outflows. The central starbursts increase the metallicity, extinction, and the alpha/Fe ratio in the gas. Significant amount of young stellar population at the ce…
We present a detailed visual morphological classification for the 4614 MaNGA galaxies in SDSS Data Release 15, using image mosaics generated from a combination of r-band (SDSS and deeper DESI Legacy Surveys) images and their digital post-processing. We distinguish 13 Hubble types and identify the presence of bars and bright tidal debris. After correcting the MaNGA sample for volume completeness, we calculate the morphological fractions, the bi-variate distribution of type and stellar mass M*-where we recognise a morphological transition "valley" around S0a-Sa types- and the variations of the g…
We present the results of the archaeological analysis of the stellar populations of a sample of ~4,000 galaxies observed by the SDSS-IV-MaNGA survey using Pipe3D. Based on this analysis we extract a sample of ~150,000 SFRs and stellar masses that mimic a single cosmological survey covering the redshift range between z~0 to z~7. We confirm that the Star-Forming Main Sequence holds as a tight relation in this range of redshifts, and evolves strongly in both the zero-point and slope. This evolution is different for the population of local star-forming (SFGs) and retired (RGs) galaxies, with the l…
Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) is acquiring integral-field spectroscopy for the largest sample of galaxies to date. By 2020, the MaNGA Survey --- one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) --- will have observed a statistically representative sample of 10$^4$ galaxies in the local Universe ($z\lesssim0.15$). In addition to a robust data-reduction pipeline (DRP), MaNGA has developed a data-analysis pipeline (DAP) that provides higher-level data products. To accompany the first public release of its code base and data produ…
Extreme emission-line galaxies, such as blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), Green Peas (GPs) and blueberries in the local Universe are the potential candidates to understand the nature of galaxies that re-ionized the early Universe. Being low-mass, metal-poor starburst systems they are understood as local analogs of the high redshift Lyman Continuum (LyC) and Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs). Even with their proximity to us, we know little about their spatially resolved properties, most of the blueberries and GPs are indeed compact, remain unresolved. Here, we report the detection of a disk-like lower-surfac…
Large area surveys with a high number of galaxies observed have undoubtedly marked a milestone in the understanding of several properties of galaxies, such as star-formation history, morphology, and metallicity. However, in many cases, these surveys provide fluxes from fixed small apertures (e.g. fibre), which cover a scant fraction of the galaxy, compelling us to use aperture corrections to study the global properties of galaxies. In this work, we derive the current total star formation rate (SFR) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) star-forming galaxies, using an empirically based aperture co…
In this paper, we present GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalog (GSWLC), a catalog of physical properties (stellar masses, dust attenuations and star formation rates (SFRs)) of ~700,000 galaxies with SDSS redshifts below 0.3. GSWLC contains galaxies within the GALEX footprint, regardless of a UV detection, covering 90% of SDSS. The physical properties were obtained from UV/optical SED fitting following Bayesian methodology of Salim et al. (2007), with improvements such as blending corrections for low-resolution UV photometry, flexible dust attenuation laws, and emission line corrections. GSWLC includ…
We consider the largest sample of 561 edge-on galaxies observed with integral field units by the MaNGA survey and find 300 galaxies where the ionised gas shows a negative vertical gradient (lag) in its rotational speed. We introduce the stop altitude as the distance to the galactic midplane at which the gas rotation should stop in the linear approximation. We find correlations between the lags, stop altitude and galactic mass, stellar velocity dispersion and overall Sersic index. We do not find any correlation of the lags or stop altitude with the star formation activity in the galaxies. We co…
By applying spectroscopic decomposition methods to a sample of MaNGA early-type galaxies, we separate out spatially and kinematically distinct stellar populations, allowing us to explore the similarities and differences between galaxy bulges and discs, and how they affect the global properties of the galaxy. We find that the components have interesting variations in their stellar populations, and display different kinematics. Bulges tend to be consistently more metal rich than their disc counterparts, and while the ages of both components are comparable, there is an interesting tail of younger…
We report the discovery of a mysterious giant $H_α$ blob that is $\sim 8$ kpc away from the main MaNGA target 1-24145, one component of a dry galaxy merger, identified in the first-year SDSS-IV MaNGA data. The size of the $H_α$ blob is $\sim$ 3-4 kpc in radius, and the $H_α$ distribution is centrally concentrated. However, there is no optical continuum counterpart in deep broadband images reaching $\sim$26.9 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in surface brightness. We estimate that the masses of ionized and cold gases are $3.3 \times 10^{5}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and $< 1.3 \times 10^{9}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, respective…
We present the stellar surface mass density {\it vs.} gas metallicity ($Σ_*-Z$) relation for more than 500,000 spatially-resolved star-forming resolution elements (spaxels) from a sample of 653 disk galaxies included in the SDSS IV MaNGA survey. We find a tight relation between these local properties, with higher metallicities as the surface density increases. This relation extends over three orders of magnitude in the surface mass density and a factor of four in metallicity. We show that this local relationship can simultaneously reproduce two well-known properties of disk galaxies: their glo…
We present here the analysis performed using the pyPipe3D pipeline for the final MaNGA dataset included in the SDSS seventeenth data-release. This dataset comprises more than 10,000 individual datacubes, being the integral field spectroscopy galaxy survey with the largest number of galaxies. pyPipe3D processes the IFS datacubes to extract spatially-resolved spectroscopic properties of both the stellar population and the ionized-gas emission lines. A brief summary of the properties of the sample and the characteristics of the analyzed data are included. The article provides details on (i) the p…
Bars in galaxies are thought to stimulate both inflow of material and radial mixing along them. Observational evidence for this mixing has been inconclusive so far however, limiting the evaluation of the impact of bars on galaxy evolution. We now use results from the MaNGA integral field spectroscopic survey to characterise radial stellar age and metallicity gradients along the bar and outside the bar in 128 strongly barred galaxies. We find that age and metallicity gradients are flatter in the barred regions of almost all barred galaxies when compared to corresponding disk regions at the same…
We study how the void environment affects the formation and evolution of galaxies in the universe by comparing the ratio of dark matter halo mass to stellar mass of galaxies in voids with galaxies in denser regions. Using spectroscopic observations from the SDSS MaNGA DR15, we estimate the dark matter halo mass of 642 void galaxies and 938 galaxies in denser regions. We use the relative velocities of the H-alpha emission line across the galaxy's surface to measure the rotation curve of each galaxy because the kinematics of the interstellar medium is smoother than the stellar kinematics. We fin…
The prevalence of outflow and feedback signatures in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a major unresolved question which large integral field unit (IFU) surveys now allow to address. In this paper, we present a kinematic analysis of the ionised gas in 2778 galaxies at z $\sim$ 0.05 observed by SDSS-IV MaNGA. Specifically, we measure the kinematics of the [OIII] λ5007Å emission line in each spatial element and fit multiple Gaussian components to account for possible non-gravitational motions of gas. Comparing the kinematics of the ionised gas between 308 MaNGA-selected AGN that have been previous…
Aims: Interacting galaxies show a metallicity dilution compared to isolated galaxies of similar masses in the mass-metallicity space at the global scale. We investigate the spatially resolved mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of galaxy pairs in the SDSS-MaNGA survey to confirm that the local relation between the stellar mass surface density and the metallicity is consistent with the MZR at the global scale. Methods: We investigate the relationship between the stellar mass surface density and the metallicity abundance, 12+log (O/H), for star-forming spaxels belonging to 298 galaxy pairs identifie…
We perform Jeans anisotropic modeling (JAM) on elliptical and spiral galaxies from the MaNGA DR13 sample. By comparing the stellar mass-to-light ratios estimated from stellar population synthesis (SPS) and from JAM, we find a similar systematic variation of the initial mass function (IMF) as in the earlier $\rm ATLAS^{3D}$ results. Early type galaxies (elliptical and lenticular) with lower velocity dispersions within one effective radius are consistent with a Chabrier-like IMF while galaxies with higher velocity dispersions are consistent with a more bottom heavy IMF such as the Salpeter IMF. …
We present an overview of a new integral field spectroscopic survey called MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory), one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) that began on 2014 July 1. MaNGA will investigate the internal kinematic structure and composition of gas and stars in an unprecedented sample of 10,000 nearby galaxies. We summarize essential characteristics of the instrument and survey design in the context of MaNGA's key science goals and present prototype observations to demonstrate MaNGA's scientific potential. MaNGA em…
We report here our finding of two new blueberry galaxies using optical IFU spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey. Both the blueberries are found to be compact ($\leq$ $1 - 2$ kpc) starburst systems located at the outskirts of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies. Our blueberries have the lowest stellar masses $\sim$ 10$^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$ amongst the locally known blueberry galaxies. We find a significantly large mean metallicity difference ($\sim$ 0.5 dex) between the blueberry sources and their associated LSBs. Moreover, the radial metallicity gradients in our blueberries are also differen…
The role of gas accretion in galaxy evolution is still a matter of debate. The presence of inflows of metal-poor gas that trigger star formation bursts of low metallicity has been proposed as an explanation for the local anti-correlation between star formation rate (SFR) and gas-phase metallicity ($\rm Z_g$) found in the literature. In the present study, we show how the anti-correlation is also present as part of a diversified range of behaviours for a sample of more than 700 nearby spiral galaxies from the SDSS IV MaNGA survey. We have characterized the local relation between SFR and $\rm Z_g…
The interaction between galaxies is believed to be the main origin of the peculiarities of galaxies, which disturbs not only the morphology but also their kinematics. These disturbed and asymmetric features are the indicators of galaxy interaction. We study the velocity field of the ionized gas of the paired galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. Using the kinemetry package, we fit the velocity field of the ionized gas to quantify the degree of kinematic asymmetry. We find that the star formation rate (SFR) of the paired galaxies with high kinematic asymmetry is significantly enhanced even …
We measure the star formation histories (SFH) of a sample of low-mass galaxies with $M_\ast<10^9M_\odot$ from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. The large number of IFU spectra for each galaxy are either combined to reach a high signal to noise ratio or used to investigate spatial variations. We use Bayesian inferences based on full spectrum fitting. Our analysis based on Bayesian evidence ratio indicates a strong preferencefor a model that allows the presence of an old stellar population, and that an improper model for the SFH can significantly underestimate the old population in these galaxies. The a…
It remains an open question as to how long ago the morphology that we see in a present-day galaxy was typically imprinted. Studies of galaxy populations at different redshifts reveal that the balance of morphologies has changed over time, but such snapshots cannot uncover the typical timescales over which individual galaxies undergo morphological transformation, nor which are the progenitors of today's galaxies of different types. However, these studies also show a strong link between morphology and star-formation rate over a large range in redshift, which offers an alternative probe of morpho…
Post-starburst galaxies are crucial to disentangling the effect of star formation and quenching on galaxy demographics. They comprise, however, a heterogeneous population of objects, described in numerous ways. To obtain a well-defined and uncontaminated sample, we take advantage of spatially resolved spectroscopy to construct an unambiguous sample of E + A galaxies - post-starburst systems with no observed ongoing star formation. Using data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) Survey, in the fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV), we have i…
The levels of heavy elements in stars are the product of enhancement by previous stellar generations, and the distribution of this metallicity among the population contains clues to the process by which a galaxy formed. Most famously, the "G-dwarf problem" highlighted the small number of low-metallicity G-dwarf stars in the Milky Way, which is inconsistent with the simplest picture of a galaxy formed from a "closed box" of gas. It can be resolved by treating the Galaxy as an open system that accretes gas throughout its life. This observation has classically only been made in the Milky Way, but…
We present the MaNGA Dwarf galaxy, MaNDala, Value-Added-Catalog, VAC, from the final release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV program. MaNDala consists of 136 randomly selected bright dwarf galaxies with $M_{*}<10^{9.1}\odot$ and $M_{g}>-18.5$ making it the largest Integral Field Spectroscopy homogeneous sample of dwarf galaxies. We release a photometric analysis of the $g,r$ and $z$ broadband imaging based on the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys as well as the spectroscopic analysis based on the Pipe3D SDSS-IV VAC. Our release includes the surface brightness (SB), geometric parameters and color …
By inverting the distributions of galaxies' apparent ellipticities and misalignment angles (measured around the projected half-light radius $R_{\rm e}$) between their photometric and kinematic axes, we study the intrinsic shape distribution of 189 slow rotator early-type galaxies with stellar masses $2\times 10^{11} M_{\odot}<M_\ast<2\times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$, extracted from a sample of about 2200 galaxies with integral-field stellar kinematics from the DR14 of the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. Thanks to the large sample of slow rotators, Graham+18 showed that there is clear structure in the misal…
We present a method of fitting optical spectra of galaxies using a basis set of six vectors obtained from principal component analysis (PCA) of a library of synthetic spectra of 40000 star formation histories (SFHs). Using this library, we provide estimates of resolved effective stellar mass-to-light ratio ($\log Υ^*$) for thousands of galaxies from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic survey. Using a testing framework built on additional synthetic SFHs, we show that the estimates of stellar mass-to-light ratio are reliable (as are their uncertainties) at a variety of signal-to-noise…
As hosts of living high-mass stars, Wolf-Rayet (WR) regions or WR galaxies are ideal objects for constraining the high-mass end of the stellar initial mass function (IMF). We construct a large sample of 910 WR galaxies/regions that cover a wide range of stellar metallicity (from Z~0.001 up to Z~0.03), by combining three catalogs of WR galaxies/regions previously selected from the SDSS and SDSS-IV/MaNGA surveys. We measure the equivalent widths of the WR blue bump at ~4650 A for each spectrum. They are compared with predictions from stellar evolutionary models Starburst99 and BPASS, with differ…
Stellar feedback-driven outflows regulate the stellar formation and chemical enrichment of galaxies, yet the underlying dependence of mass outflow rate on galaxy properties remains largely unknown. We develop a simple yet comprehensive non-equilibrium chemical evolution model~(NE-CEM) to constrain the mass-loading factor $η$ of outflows using the metallicity-stellar mass-SFR relation observed by SDSS at $z{=}0$. Our NE-CEM predicts the chemical enrichment by explicitly tracking both the histories of star formation and mass-loading. After exploring the EAGLE simulation, we discover a compact ye…
Using spectroscopic observations from the SDSS MaNGA DR15, we study the relationships between the ratio of total to visible mass and various parameters characterizing the evolution and environment of the galaxies in this survey. Measuring the rotation curve with the relative velocities of the H-alpha emission line across the galaxy's surface, we estimate each galaxy's total mass. We develop a statistical model to describe the observed distribution in the ratio of total to visible mass, from which we extract a galaxy's most probable value for this mass ratio. We present the relationships betwee…
The nature of warm, ionized gas outside of galaxies may illuminate several key galaxy evolutionary processes. A serendipitous observation by the MaNGA survey has revealed a large, asymmetric H$α$ complex with no optical counterpart that extends $\approx8"$ ($\approx6.3$ kpc) beyond the effective radius of a dusty, starbursting galaxy. This H$α$ extension is approximately three times the effective radius of the host galaxy and displays a tail-like morphology. We analyze its gas-phase metallicities, gaseous kinematics, and emission-line ratios, and discuss whether this H$α$ extension could be di…
The gas metallicity distributions across individual galaxies and across galaxy samples can teach us much about how galaxies evolve. Massive galaxies typically possess negative metallicity gradients, and mass and metallicity are tightly correlated on local scales over wide range of galaxy masses; however, the precise origins of such trends remain elusive. Here, we employ data from SDSS-IV MaNGA to explore how gas metallicity depends on local stellar mass density and on galactocentric radius within individual galaxies. We also consider how the strengths of these dependencies vary across the gala…
Using the largest sample of galaxies observed with an optical integral field unit (IFU, the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, $\sim$10000 targets), we derive the radial distribution of the physical properties obtained from the stellar continuum and the ionized-gas emission lines. Given the large sample, we are able to explore the impact of the total stellar mass and morphology by averaging those radial distributions for different bins of both global properties. We use a piece-wise analysis to characterize the slopes of the gradients from those properties at different galactocentric distances. In general w…
