HI-rich galaxies typically have high star-formation rates (SFR), but there exist interesting HI-rich and low star-forming (low-SF) galaxies. Previous work on a sample of these galaxies identified from HI-MaNGA (HI follow-up to the MaNGA survey) using an infrared indicator of specific-SFR (sSFR; namely W2-W3~<2) could find no single physical process to explain their unusual behaviour. The method by which galaxies are identified as low sSFR may be important in this conclusion. In this Research Note, we explore how an HI-rich, low sSFR sample of HI-MaNGA galaxies differs using H alpha, single stellar population, and ultraviolet estimators of SFR. We find that samples are statistically similar to each other so long as W2-W3~<2 is interpreted as corresponding to sSFR<10^{-11.15} yr^{-1}.
The interaction between galaxies is believed to be the main origin of the peculiarities of galaxies, which disturbs not only the morphology but also their kinematics. These disturbed and asymmetric features are the indicators of galaxy interaction. We study the velocity field of the ionized gas of the paired galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. Using the kinemetry package, we fit the velocity field of the ionized gas to quantify the degree of kinematic asymmetry. We find that the star formation rate (SFR) of the paired galaxies with high kinematic asymmetry is significantly enhanced even …
We analyze spatially resolved and co-added SDSS-IV MaNGA spectra with signal-to-noise ~100 from 2200 passive central galaxies (z~0.05) to understand how central galaxy assembly depends on stellar mass (M*) and halo mass (Mh). We control for systematic errors in Mh by employing a new group catalog from Tinker (2020a,b) and the widely-used Yang et al. (2007) catalog. At fixed M*, the strength of several stellar absorption features varies systematically with Mh. Completely model-free, this is one of the first indications that the stellar populations of centrals with identical M* are affected by t…
We present the initial results of a census of 684 barred galaxies in the MaNGA galaxy survey. This large sample contains galaxies with a wide range of physical properties, and we attempt to link bar properties to key observables for the whole galaxy. We find the length of the bar, when normalised for galaxy size, is correlated with the distance of the galaxy from the star formation main sequence, with more passive galaxies hosting larger-scale bars. Ionised gas is observed along the bars of low-mass galaxies only, and these galaxies are generally star-forming and host short bars. Higher-mass g…
The stellar surface density within the inner 1 kpc ($Σ_{1}$) has become a popular tool for understanding the growth of galaxies and its connection with the quenching of star formation. The emerging picture suggests that building a central dense core is a necessary condition for quenching. However, it is not clear whether changes in $Σ_{1}$ trace changes in stellar kinematics and the growth of dispersion-dominated bulges. In this paper, we combine imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with stellar kinematics from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field unit (SAMI) and Mapping Nearby Gala…
Using spatially resolved spectroscopy from SDSS-IV MaNGA we have demonstrated that low ionisation emission line regions (LIERs) in local galaxies result from photoionisation by hot evolved stars, not active galactic nuclei. LIERs are ubiquitous in both quiescent galaxies and in the central regions of galaxies where star formation takes place at larger radii. We refer to these two classes of galaxies as extended LIER (eLIER) and central LIER (cLIER) galaxies respectively. cLIERs are late type galaxies located around the green valley, in the transition region between the star formation main sequ…
The search for new global scaling relations linking physical properties of galaxies has a fundamental interest. Furthermore, their recovery from spatially resolved relations has been one of the spotlights of integral field spectroscopy (IFS). In this study we investigate the existence of global and local relations between stellar age ($Age_\star$) and gas-phase metallicity ($Z_g$). To this aim, we analyze IFS data for a sample of 736 star-forming disk galaxies from the MaNGA survey. We report a positive correlation between the global $Z_g$ and $D(4000)$ (an indicator of stellar age), with a sl…
We present the MaNGA FIREFLY Value-Added-Catalogue (VAC) - a catalogue of ~3.7 million spatially resolved stellar population properties across 10,010 nearby galaxies from the final data release of the MaNGA survey. The full spectral fitting code firefly is employed to derive parameters such as stellar ages, metallicities, stellar and remnant masses, star formation histories, star formation rates and dust attenuation. In addition to Voronoi-binned measurements, our VAC also provides global properties, such as central values and radial gradients. Two variants of the VAC are available: presenting…
We use a sample of ~3000 galaxies from the MaNGA MPL-7 internal data release to study the alpha abundance distribution within low-redshift galaxies. We use the Lick index ratio Mgb/<Fe> as an alpha abundance indicator to study relationships between the alpha abundance distribution and galaxy properties such as effective stellar velocity dispersion within 0.3 effective radii (sigma_*), galaxy environment, and dark matter halo formation time (z_f). We find that (1) all galaxies show a tight correlation between Mgb/<Fe> and sigma_*; (2) `old' (H_beta < 3) low-sigma_* galaxies in high local densit…
We present, for the first time, the relationship between local stellar mass surface density, $\mathrm{Σ_{*}}$, and N/O derived from SDSS-IV MaNGA data, using a sample of $792765$ high signal-to-noise ratio star-forming spaxels. Using a combination of phenomenological modelling and partial correlation analysis, we find that $\mathrm{Σ_{*}}$ alone is insufficient to predict the N/O in MaNGA spaxels, and that there is an additional dependence on the local star formation rate surface density, $\mathrm{Σ_{SFR}}$. This effect is a factor of $3$ stronger than the dependence of 12+log(O/H) on $\mathrm…
We apply stellar population synthesis analysis to obtain spatially-resolved archaeological inferences for a large sample of "red and dead" Elliptical galaxies (Classical Ellipticals; CLEs) from the MaNGA/SDSS-IV DR15 survey. From their 2D stellar light and mass maps, we explore the differences between the radial mass and light distributions in the rest-frame bands $g,$ $r,$ and $i$ as functions of look-back time, $t_{\rm lb}$, or redshift, $z$. We characterize these differences through the ratios between the following mass- and light-derived global properties: sizes, concentrations, and effect…
We study how star formation (SF) is quenched in low-redshift disk galaxies with integral-field spectroscopy. We select 131 face-on spiral galaxies with stellar mass greater than $\rm 3\times10^{10}M_\odot$, and with spatially resolved spectrum from MaNGA DR13. We subdivide the sample into four groups based on the offset of their global specific star formation rate (SFR) from the star-forming main sequence and stack the radial profiles of stellar mass and SFR. By comparing the stacked profiles of quiescent and star-forming disk galaxies, we find that the decrease of the global SFR is caused by …
The role of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) during galaxy interactions and how they influence the star formation in the system are still under debate. We use a sample of 1156 galaxies in galaxy pairs or mergers (hereafter `pairs') from the MaNGA survey. This pair sample is selected by the velocity offset, projected separation, and morphology, and is further classified into four cases along the merger sequence based on morphological signatures. We then identify a total of 61 (5.5%) AGNs in pairs based on the emission-line diagnostics. No evolution of the AGN fraction is found, either along the me…
Many processes have been proposed to explain the quenching of star formation in spiral galaxies and their transformation into S0s. These processes affect the bulge and disc in different ways, and so by isolating the bulge and disc spectra, we can look for these characteristic signatures. In this work, we used BUDDI to cleanly extract the spectra of the bulges and discs of 78 S0 galaxies in the MaNGA Survey. We compared the luminosity and mass weighted stellar populations of the bulges and discs, finding that bulges are generally older and more metal rich than their discs. When considering the …
The role of HI content in galaxy interactions is still under debate. To study the HI content of galaxy pairs at different merging stages, we compile a sample of 66 major-merger galaxy pairs and 433 control galaxies from the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. In this study, we adopt kinematic asymmetry as a new effective indicator to describe the merging stage of galaxy pairs. With archival data from the HI-MaNGA survey and new observations from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), we investigate the differences in HI gas fraction ($f_{\text{HI}}$), star formation rate (SFR)…
The mean stellar alpha-to-iron abundance ratio ([$α$/Fe]) of a galaxy is an indicator of galactic star formation timescale. It is important for understanding the star formation history of early-type galaxies (ETGs) as their star formation processes have basically stopped. Using the model templates which are made by Vazdekis et al., we apply the pPXF based spectral fitting method to estimate the [$α$/Fe] of 196 high signal-to-noise ratio ETGs from the MaNGA survey. The velocity dispersions within 1R$_e$ ($σ_{e}$) range from 27 to 270 km/s. We find a flat relation between the mean [$α$/Fe] withi…
The tight correlation between total galaxy stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) has become known as the star forming main sequence. Using ~487,000 spaxels from galaxies observed as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Mapping Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, we confirm previous results that a correlation also exists between the surface densities of star formation (Sigma_SFR) and stellar mass (Sigma_mass) on kpc scales, representing a `resolved' main sequence. Using a new metric (Delta Sigma_SFR), which measures the relative enhancement or deficit of star formation on …
The distribution of the gas velocity dispersion sigma across the images of 1146 MaNGA galaxies is analyzed. We find that there are two types of distribution of the gas velocity dispersion across the images of galaxies: (i) the distributions of 909 galaxies show a radial symmetry with or without the sigma enhancement at the center (R distribution) and (ii) distributions with a band of enhanced sigma along the minor axis in the images of 159 galaxies with or without the sigma enhancement at the center (B distribution) The sigma distribution across the images of 78 galaxies cannot be reliable cla…
We study radial profiles in H$α$ equivalent width and specific star formation rate (sSFR) derived from spatially-resolved SDSS-IV MaNGA spectroscopy to gain insight on the physical mechanisms that suppress star formation and determine a galaxy's location in the SFR-$\rm M_\star$ diagram. Even within the star-forming `main sequence', the measured sSFR decreases with stellar mass, both in an integrated and spatially-resolved sense. Flat sSFR radial profiles are observed for $\rm log(M_\star/ M_\odot) < 10.5$, while star-forming galaxies of higher mass show a significant decrease in sSFR in the c…
Galaxy internal structure growth has long been accused of inhibiting star formation in disc galaxies. We investigate the potential physical connection between the growth of dispersion-supported stellar structures (e.g. classical bulges) and the position of galaxies on the star-forming main sequence at $z\sim0$. Combining the might of the SAMI and MaNGA galaxy surveys, we measure the $λ_{Re}$ spin parameter for 3781 galaxies over $9.5 < \log M_{\star} [\rm{M}_{\odot}] < 12$. At all stellar masses, galaxies at the locus of the main sequence possess $λ_{Re}$ values indicative of intrinsically fla…
We consider the circumnuclear regions of MaNGA galaxies. The spectra are classified as AGN-like, HII-region-like (or SF-like), and intermediate (INT) spectra according to their positions on the BPT diagram. There are the following four configurations of the radiation distributions in the circumnuclear regions: 1) AGN+INT, the innermost region of the AGN-like radiation is surrounded by a ring of radiation of the intermediate type; 2) INT, the central area of radiation of the intermediate type; 3) SF+INT, the inner region of the HII-region-like radiation is surrounded by a ring of radiation of t…
The late assembly of massive galaxies is thought to be dominated by stellar accretion in their outskirts (beyond 2 effective radii Re) due to dry, minor galaxy mergers. We use observations of 1010 passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) within z<0.15 from SDSS IV MaNGA to search for evidence of this accretion. The outputs from the stellar population fitting codes FIREFLY, pPXF, and Prospector are compared to control for systematic errors in stellar metallicity (Z) estimation. We find that the average radial logZ/Zsun profiles of ETGs in various stellar mass (M) bins are not linear. As a result, the…
It is generally assumed that galaxies are a bimodal population in both star formation and structure: star-forming galaxies are disks, while passive galaxies host large bulges or are entirely spheroidal. Here, we test this scenario by presenting a full census of the kinematic morphologies of a volume-limited sample of galaxies in the local Universe extracted from the MaNGA galaxy survey. We measure the integrated stellar line-of-sight velocity to velocity dispersion ratio ($V/σ$) for 4574 galaxies in the stellar mass range $9.75 < \log M_{\star}[\rm{M}_{\odot}] < 11.75$. We show that at fixed s…
The central regions of star-forming barred spiral galaxies can be devoid of star formation because of the redistribution of gas along the length of the bar. However, there can be gas outside the length of the bar that can host star formation. We study a sample of barred disc galaxies in the local Universe with an aim to discriminate between centrally quenched and globally quenched galaxies based on their positions on star-formation-rate(SFR)--stellar mass plots and to find a connection between the SFR of quenched galaxies and the length of their bar. We classified barred galaxies as centrally …

We use data from the GAMA and GALEX surveys to demonstrate that the UV upturn, an unexpected excess of ultraviolet flux from a hot stellar component, seen in the spectra of many early-type galaxies, arises from processes internal to individual galaxies with no measurable influence from the galaxies' larger environment. We first define a clean sample of passive galaxies without a significant contribution to their UV flux from low-level star formation. We confirm that galaxies with the optical colours of red sequence galaxies often have signs of residual star formation, which, without other info…
Recently a number of studies have proposed that the dispersion along the star formation rate - stellar mass relation ($σ_{\mathrm{sSFR}}$-M$_{*}$) is indicative of variations in star-formation history (SFH) driven by feedback processes. They found a 'U'-shaped dispersion and attribute the increased scatter at low and high stellar masses to stellar and active galactic nuclei feed-back respectively. However, measuring $σ_{\mathrm{sSFR}}$ and the shape of the $σ_{\mathrm{sSFR}}$-M$_{*}$ relation is problematic and can vary dramatically depending on the sample selected, chosen separation of passiv…
We study how stellar rotation curves (RCs) of galaxies are correlated on average with morphology and stellar mass ($M_\mathrm{star}$) using the final release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV MaNGA data. We use the visually assigned $T$-types for the morphology indicator, and adopt a functional form for the RC that can model non-flat RCs at large radii. We discover that within the radial coverage of the MaNGA data, the popularly known flat rotation curve at large radii applies only to the particular classes of galaxies, i.e., massive late types ($T$-type $\geq1$, $M_\mathrm{star}\gtrsim10^{10.8}M…

The ratio of calcium II H plus H$ε$ to calcium II K inverts as a galaxy stellar population moves from being dominated by older stars to possessing more A and B class stars. This ratio - the H:K ratio - can serve as an indicator of stellar populations younger than 200 Myr. In this work, we provide a new method to determine H:K, and apply it to spectra taken of cluster galaxies in Abell~3888. Although H:K is on average systematically lower for the cluster than for a wider field sample, we show that H:K does not have a simple relationship with other indices such as the equivalent widths of H$δ$ a…
(Abridged version) We explore whether a scenario that combines an origin by mergers at $z\sim$1.8-1.5 with a subsequent passive evolution of the resulting S0 remnants since $z \sim$0.8-1 is compatible with observational data of S0s in the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR). We studied a set of major and minor merger experiments from the GalMer database that generate massive S0 remnants. We analysed the location of these remnants in the photometric and stellar TFRs assuming that they correspond to $z\sim0.8$ galaxies. We then estimated their evolution in these planes over the last 7 Gyr. The results w…
The expansion history of the Universe can be constrained in a cosmology-independent way by measuring the differential age evolution of cosmic chronometers. This yields a measurement of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ as a function of redshift. The most reliable cosmic chronometers known so far are extremely massive and passively evolving galaxies. Age-dating these galaxies is, however, a difficult task, and even a small contribution of an underlying young stellar population could, in principle, affect the age estimate and its cosmological interpretation. We present several spectral indicators to d…
Radial metallicity trends provide a key indicator of physical processes such as star formation and radial gas migration within a galaxy. Large IFU surveys allow for detailed studies of these radial variations, with recent observations detecting central dips in the metallicity, which may trace the impact of various evolutionary processes. However, the origin of these dips has not been conclusively determined, with suggestions that they may be diagnostic dependent. In this paper, we use the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey to investigate whether the observed dips represent genuine decreases in the central m…
The distribution of galaxies on a colour-magnitude diagram reveals a bimodality, featuring a passively evolving red sequence and a star-forming blue cloud. The region between these two, the Green Valley (GV), represents a fundamental transition where quenching processes operate. We exploit an alternative definition of the GV using the 4,000 Angstrom break strength, an indicator that is more resilient than colour to dust attenuation. We compare and contrast our GV definition with the traditional one, based on dust-corrected colour, making use of data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our GV se…
