We combine the ideas of Dirac's orthonormal representation, Everett's relative state, and 't Hooft's ontological basis to define the notion of a world for quantum mechanics. Mathematically, for a quantum system $\mathcal{Q}$ with an associated Hilbert space $\mathbb{H},$ a world of $\mathcal{Q}$ is defined to be an orthonormal basis of $\mathbb{H}.$ The evolution of the system is governed by Schrödinger's equation for the worlds of it. An observable in a certain world is a self-adjoint operator diagonal under the corresponding basis. Moreover, a state is defined in an associated world but can be uniquely extended to the whole system as proved recently by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. Although the states described by unit vectors in $\mathbb{H}$ may be determined in different worlds, there are the so-called topology-compact states which must be determined by the totality of a world. We can apply the Copenhagen interpretation to a world for regarding a quantum state as an external observation, and obtain the Born rule of random outcomes. Therefore, we present a mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics based on the notion of a world instead of a quantum state.
We give the mathematical theory of duality computer in the density matrix formalism. This result complements the mathematical theory of duality computer of Gudder in the pure state formalism.
We present a mathematical framework for simulation of optical fields in complex gravitational-wave interferometers. The simulation framework uses the two-photon formalism for optical fields and includes radiation pressure effects, an important addition required for simulating signal and noise fields in next-generation interferometers with high circulating power. We present a comparison of results from the simulation with analytical calculation and show that accurate agreement is achieved.
An axiomatic formalism for a minimal irreversible quantum mechanics is introduced. It is shown that a quantum equilibrium and the decoherence phenomenon are consequences of the axioms and that Lyapunov variables, exponential survival probabilities, and a classisal conditional never-decreasing entropy can be defined.
A scheme for constructing quantum mechanics is given that does not have Hilbert space and linear operators as its basic elements. Instead, a version of algebraic approach is considered. Elements of a noncommutative algebra (observables) and functionals on this algebra (elementary states) associated with results of single measurements are used as primary components of the scheme. On the one hand, it is possible to use within the scheme the formalism of the standard (Kolmogorov) probability theory, and, on the other hand, it is possible to reproduce the mathematical formalism of standard quantum…
We present an alternative formalism of quantum mechanics tailored to statistical ensemble in phase space. The purpose of our work is to show that it is possible to establish an alternative autonomous formalism of quantum mechanics in phase space using statistical methodology. The adopted perspective leads to obtaining within the framework of its theory the master quantum-mechanical equation without recourse to the other formalisms of quantum mechanics, and gives the idea of operators pertaining to dynamical quantities. The derivation of this equation starts with the ensemble in phase space. We…
The equivalence of the Rivier-Margenau-Hill and Born-Jordan-Shankara phase space formalisms to the conventional operator approach of quantum mechanics is demonstrated. It is shown that in spite of the presence of singular kernels the mappings relating phase space functions and operators back and forth are possible.
Heisenberg motion equations in Quantum mechanics can be put into the Hamilton form. The difference between the commutator and its principal part, the Poisson bracket, can be accounted for exactly. Canonical transformations in Quantum mechanics are not, or at least not what they appear to be; their properties are formulated in a series of Conjectures.
The conformability of angular observales (angular momentum and azimuthal angle) with the mathematical rules of quantum mechanics is a question which still rouses debates. It is valued negatively within the existing approaches which are restricted by two amendable presumptions. If the respective presumptions are removed one can obtain a general approach in which the mentioned question is valued positively.
We point out that Fratini and Hayrapetyan ignored the randomness of mixing, a basic request to prepare a statistical ensemble rather than an ensemble in general. Their analysis is irrelevant for standard statistical ensembles, their conclusions about the limitations of standard theory become unjustified.
In a paper of us, it is showed that Density Matrices do not provide a complete description of ensembles of states in quantum mechanics, since they lack measurable information concerning the preparation of the ensembles. Bodor and Diósi have later posted a comment on that article, which agrees on some points of it but disagrees on some others. This reply is intended to clarify the discussion.
We sketch a group-theoretical framework, based on the Heisenberg-Weyl group, encompassing both quantum and classical statistical descriptions of mechanical systems. We re-define in group-theoretical terms the kinematical arena and the state-space of the system, achieving a unified quantum-classical language and a novel version of the correspondence principle. We briefly discuss the structure of observables and dynamics within our framework.
The mathematical formulation of Quantum Mechanics is derived from purely operational axioms based on a general definition of "experiment" as a set of transformations. The main ingredient of the mathematical construction is the postulated existence of "faithful states" that allows one to calibrate the experimental apparatus. Such notion is at the basis of the operational definitions of the scalar product and of the "adjoint" of a transformation.
Probabilistic description of results of measurements and its consequences for understanding quantum mechanics are discussed. It is shown that the basic mathematical structure of quantum mechanics like the probability amplitudes, Born rule, commutation and uncertainty relations, probability density current, momentum operator, rules for including the scalar and vector potentials and antiparticles can be obtained from the probabilistic description of results of measurement of the space coordinates and time. Equations of motion of quantum mechanics, the Klein-Gordon equation, Schrodinger equation …
The star product formalism has proved to be an alternative formulation for nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. We want introduce here a covariant star product in order to extend the star product formalism to relativistic quantum mechanics in the proper time formulation.
Many-Worlds quantum mechanics differs from standard quantum mechanics in that in Many-Worlds, the wave function is a relative density of universes in the multiverse amplitude rather than a probability amplitude. This means that in Many-Worlds, the Born frequencies are approached rather than given a priori. Thus in Many-Worlds the rate of approach to the final frequencies can be calculated and compared with observation. I use Many-Worlds to derive the rate of approach in the double slit experiment, and show that it agrees with observation. Standard quantum theory has never been used to derive a…
In this paper we present the two-state vector formalism of quantum mechanics. It is a time-symmetrized approach to standard quantum theory particularly helpful for the analysis of experiments performed on pre- and post-selected ensembles. Several peculiar effects which naturally arise in this approach are considered. In particular, the concept of ``weak measurements'' (standard measurements with weakening of the interaction) is discussed in depth revealing a very unusual but consistent picture. Also, a design of a gedanken experiment which implements a kind of quantum ``time machine'' is descr…
Conditional probabilities in quantum systems which have both initial and final boundary conditions are commonly evaluated using the Aharonov-Bergmann-Lebowitz rule. In this short note we present a seemingly disturbing paradox that appears when applying the rule to systems with slightly broken degeneracies. In these cases we encounter a singular limit - the probability "jumps" when going from perfect degeneracy to negligibly broken one. We trace the origin of the paradox and solve it from both traditional and modern perspectives in order to highlight the physics behind it: the necessity to take…
The relational interpretation of quantum mechanics (RQM) has received a growing interest since its first formulation in 1996. Usually presented as an interpretational layer over the usual quantum mechanics formalism, it appears as a philosophical perspective without proper mathematical counterparts. This state of affairs has direct consequences on the scientific debate on RQM which still suffers from misunderstandings and imprecise statements. In an attempt to clarify those debates, the present paper proposes a radical reformulation of the mathematical framework of quantum mechanics which is r…
It is well known that nonrelativistic quantum mechanics presents a clear asymmetry between space and time. Much of this asymmetry is attributed to the lack of Lorentz invariance of the theory. Nonetheless, a recent work [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{95}, 032133 (2017)] showed that even though this is partially true, there is a broader physical scenario in which space and time can be handled in nonrelativistic quantum theory in a more symmetric way. In this space-time-symmetric formalism, an additional Hilbert space is defined so that time is raised to the status of operator and position becomes a para…
We show that two chosen ensembles of spin states, which are differently prepared but are described by the same density matrix in quantum mechanics, do not fully share the same measurable characteristics. One characteristic on which they differ is shown to be the variance of the spin along a given direction. We conclude that the statistical description of an ensemble of states as given by its density matrix, although sufficient in many cases, should be considered incomplete, as it does not fully describe the measurable characteristics of the ensemble. A discussion a posteriori on the problem is…
In the work it is shown that the principles "the objective local theory" and corollaries of the standard quantum mechanics are not in such antagonistic inconsistency as it is usually supposed. In the framework of algebraic approach, the postulates are formulated which allow constructing the updated mathematical scheme of quantum mechanics. This scheme incorporates the standard mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics. Simultaneously, in it there is a mathematical object, which adequately describes individual experiment.
Quantum field theory is the traditional solution to the problems inherent in melding quantum mechanics with special relativity. However, it has also long been known that an alternative first-quantized formulation can be given for relativistic quantum mechanics, based on the parametrized paths of particles in spacetime. Because time is treated similarly to the three space coordinates, rather than as an evolution parameter, such a spacetime approach has proved particularly useful in the study of quantum gravity and cosmology. This paper shows how a spacetime path formalism can be considered to a…
In a previous preprint (quant-ph/0012122) we introduced a ``contextual objectivity" formulation of quantum mechanics (QM). A central feature of this approach is to define the quantum state in physical rather than in mathematical terms, in such a way that it may be given an "objective reality". Here we use some ideas about the system dimensionality, taken from quant-ph/0101012, to propose a possible axiomatic approach to QM. In this approach the structure of QM appears as a direct consequence of the non-commutative character of the (classical geometrical) group of "knobs transformations", that …
It is argued on the basis of certain mathematical characteristics that classical mechanics is not constitutionally suited to accomodate consciousness, whereas quantum mechanics is. These mathematical characteristics pertain to the nature of the information represented in the state of the brain, and the way this information enters into the dynamics.
It is given a preliminary discussion on the ontic nature of quantum states to be intended as potentialities and on the central role of spin to be considered as the basic essence of quantum mechanical reality. The possible fundamental role of potentialities and of spin is evidenced in the framework of physical as well as of biological reality. After such preliminary deepening, using a quantum like scheme delineated on the basis of an algebraic structure, it is given for the first time mathematical demonstration of the transition from potentiality of states to their actualization as basic mechan…
The main aim of this note is to show that the formalism of multi-time equations in quantum mechanics meant to represent a manifestly Lorentz-invariant theory suffers from at least three imperfections: (1) It does not cover those physical systems for which the Schrödinger picture of quantum mechanics does not exist. (2) The integrabiliy condition which has been proposed in the formalism does not imply as necessary that for every partial Hamiltonian there exists a Schrödinger equation. (3) The formalism does not generally allow for interactions even in a non-relativistic multi-particle quantum s…
The Weltanschauung emerging from quantum theory clashes profoundly with our classical concepts. Quantum characteristics like superposition, entanglement, wave-particle duality, nonlocality, contextuality are difficult to reconcile with our everyday intuition. In this article I survey some aspects of quantum foundations and discuss intriguing connections with the foundations of mathematics.
In this work we study the Ramsauer-Townsend effect.First, we use the Quantum Mechanical Formalism of Schrodinger. After, it is calculated with the Quantum Mechanical Formalism of de Broglie-Bohm. In this case, we use the Kostin equation, taking into account the energy dissipation of the electrons scattered by sharp edged potential wells.
Electromagnetic phenomena can be described by Maxwell equations written for the vectors of electric and magnetic field. Equivalently, electrodynamics can be reformulated in terms of an electromagnetic vector potential. We demonstrate that the Schrödinger equation admits an analogous treatment. We present a Lagrangian theory of a real scalar field $ϕ$ whose equation of motion turns out to be equivalent to the Schrödinger equation with time independent potential. After introduction the field into the formalism, its mathematical structure becomes analogous to those of electrodynamics. The field $…
Maintaining the position that the wave function $ψ$ provides a complete description of state, the traditional formalism of quantum mechanics is augmented by introducing continuous trajectories for particles which are sample paths of a stochastic process determined (including the underlying probability space) by $ψ$. In the resulting formalism, problems relating to measurements and objective reality are solved as in Bohmian mechanics (without sharing its weak points). The pitfalls of Nelson's stochastic mechanics are also avoided.
Our aim in this paper is to show an example of the formalism we have developed to avoid the label-tensor-product-vector-space-formalism of quantum mechanics when dealing with indistinguishable quanta. States in this new vector space, that we call the Q-space, refer only to occupation numbers and permutation operators act as the identity operator on them, reflecting in the formalism the unobservability of permutations, a goal of quasi-set theory.
In the present article we consider the conjunction fallacy, a well known cognitive heuristic experimentally tested in cognitive science, which occurs for intuitive judgments in situations of bounded rationality. We show that the quantum formalism can be used to describe in a very simple way this fallacy in terms of interference effect. We evidence that the quantum formalism leads quite naturally to violations of Bayes' rule when considering the probability of the conjunction of two events. Thus we suggest that in cognitive science the formalism of quantum mechanics can be used to describe a \t…
We start to develop the quantization formalism in a hyperbolic Hilbert space. Generalizing Born's probability interpretation, we found that unitary transformations in such a Hilbert space represent a new class of transformations of probabilities which describe a kind of {\it hyperbolic interference}. The most interesting problem which was generated by our investigation is to find experimental evidence of hyperbolic interference. The hyperbolic quantum formalism can also be interesting as a new theory of probabilistic waves that can be developed parallely to the standard quantum theory. Compara…
Bohmian mechanics provides an explanation of quantum phenomena in terms of point particles guided by wave functions. This review focuses on the formalism of non-relativistic Bohmian mechanics, rather than its interpretation. Although the Bohmian and standard quantum theories have different formalisms, both give exactly the same predictions for all phenomena. Fifteen years ago, the quantum chemistry community began to study the practical usefulness of Bohmian mechanics. Since then, the scientific community has mainly applied it to study the (unitary) evolution of single-particle wave functions,…
A qualitative but formalized representation of microstates is first established quite independently of the quantum mechanical mathematical formalism, exclusively under epistemological-operational-methodological constraints. Then, using this representation as a reference-and-imbedding-structure, the foundations of an intelligible reconstruction of the Hilbert-Dirac formulation of Quantum Mechanics is developed. Inside this reconstruction the measurement problem as well as the other major problems raised by the quantum mechanical formalism, dissolve.
In this paper, we investigate the connection between Classical and Quantum Mechanics by dividing Quantum Theory in two parts: - General Quantum Axiomatics (a system is described by a state in a Hilbert space, observables are self-adjoint operators and so on) - Quantum Mechanics properly that specifies the Hilbert space, the Heisenberg rule, the free Hamiltonian... We show that General Quantum Axiomatics (up to a supplementary "axiom of classicity") can be used as a non-standard mathematical ground to formulate all the ideas and equations of ordinary Classical Statistical Mechanics. So the ques…
This note is an addendum to quant-ph/0507115. In that paper, I present a formalism for relativistic quantum mechanics in which the spacetime paths of particles are considered fundamental, reproducing the standard results of the traditional formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. Now, it is well known that there are issues with the ability to localize the position of particles in the usual formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics. The present note shows how, in the spacetime path formalism, the natural representation of on-shell 3-momentum states is effectiv…
A Newtonian mechanics model is essentially the model of a point body in an inertial reference frame. How to describe extended bodies in non-inertial (vibrational) reference frames with the random initial conditions? One of the most general description (known as the higher derivatives formalism) consists in taking into account the infinite number of the higher order temporal derivatives of the coordinates in the Lagrange function. Such formalism describes physical objects in the infinite dimensional space does not contradict quantum mechanics and infinite dimensional Hilbert space.
Quantum nonlocality is discussed as an aspect of the quantum formalism that is seriously in need of interpretation. The Transactional Interpretation of quantum mechanics, which describes quantum processes as transactional "handshakes" between retarded $ψ$ waves and advanced $ψ*$ waves, is discussed. Examples of the use of the Transactional Interpretation in resolving quantum paradoxes and in understanding the counter-intuitive aspects of the formalism, particularly quantum nonlocality, are provided.
A generalized dynamics is postulated in a product space ${\cal R}^{3}\times {\cal S}^{1}$ with ${\cal R}^3$ representing the configuration space of a one particle system to which is attached the U(1) fibre bundle represented by the manifold ${\cal S}^{1}$. The manifold ${\cal S}^{1}$ is chosen to correspond to the action phase, with the action being the principal function corresponding to the associated classical dynamical system. A Hilbert space representation of the flow equation representing the dynamics in the above product space is then obtained, which is found to yield a probability ampl…
We introduce a formalism that exploits the many-input many-output nature of nodes in quantum circuits. There is a diagrammatic and an algebraic version, the latter similar to the spinor formalism of general relativity. This allows us to work in truly basis independent ways, clarifying and simplifying many aspects of quantum state processing. The narrative is at times interrupted by antics of characters from quantum age fairy tales.
The $2 \times 2$-matrix structure of Green's functions is a common feature for the real-time formalisms of quantum field theory under thermal situations, such as the closed time path formalism and Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD). It has been believed to originate from quantum nature. Recently, Galley has proposed the Hamilton's principle with initial data for nonconservative classical systems, doubling each degree of freedom [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 174301 (2013)]. We show that the Galley's Hamilton formalism can be extended to quantum field and that the resulting theory is naturally identical with …
The representation of numbers by product states in quantum mechanics can be extended to the representation of words and word sequences in languages by product states. This can be used to study quantum systems that generate text that has meaning. A simple example of such a system, based on an example described by Smullyan, is studied here. Based on a path interpretation for some word states, definitions of truth, validity, consistency and completeness are given and their properties studied. It is also shown that the relation between the meaning, if any, of word states and the algorithmic comple…
We provide a systematic approach to quantum mechanics from an information-theoretic perspective using the language of tensor networks. Our formulation needs only a single kind of object, so-called positive *-tensors. Physical models translate experimental setups into networks of these *-tensors, and the evaluation of the resulting networks yields the probability distributions describing measurement outcomes. The idea behind our approach is similar to categorical formulations of quantum mechanics. However, our formulation is mathematically simpler and less abstract. Our presentation of the core…
We present an alternative to the Copenhagen interpretation of the formalism of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The basic difference is that the new interpretation is formulated in the language of epistemological realism. It involves a change in some basic physical concepts. Elementary particles are considered as extended objects and nonlocal effects are included. The role of the new concepts in the problem of measurement and of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations is described. Experiments to distinguish the proposed interpretation from the Copenhagen one are pointed out.
The basic principles of the quantum mechanics in the K-field formalism are stated in the paper. The basic distinction of this theory arises from that the quantum theory equations (including well-known Schrodinger, Klein-Gordon and quadratic Dirac equations) are obtained from de Broglie postulate geometric generalization. Rather, they are obtained as the free wave equations on a manifold metrizing force interactions of particles. Such view on the quantum theory basic equations allows one to use semiclassical models for the quantum system simulation. The quantization principle modifies as well. …
A space-time symmetric and explicitly Lorentz covariant path integral formalism of relativistic quantum mechanics is proposed, which produces partial locally correlations of quantum processes of massive particles with the velocity of light at low energy limits. A superluminal correlation is also possible if anti-particles that moving along reverse time direction are excited. This provides a new point of view to interpret EPR experiments, also leaks a light of hope for hidden variable theories.
The fluctuations or disordered motion of the electromagnetic fields are described by statistical properties rather than instantaneous values. This statistical description of the optical fields is underlying in the Stokes-Mueller formalism that applies to measurable intensities. However, the fundamental concept of optical coherence, that is assessed by the ability of waves to interfere, is not treatable by this formalism because it omits the global phase. In this work we show that, using an analogy between deterministic matrix states associated to optical media and quantum mechanical wavefuncti…
We report general properties of N-fold supersymmetry in one-dimensional quantum mechanics. N-fold supersymmetry is characterized by supercharges which are N-th polynomials of momentum. Relations between the anti-commutator of the supercharges and the Hamiltonian, the spectra, the Witten index, the non-renormalization theorems and the quasi-solvability are examined. We also present further investigation about a particular class of N-fold supersymmetric models which we dubbed type A. Algebraic equations which determine a part of spectra of type A models are presented, and the non-renormalization…
We have presented a consistent electronic transport framework for the two-dimensional extended Holstein's organic molecular-crystal based upon complete quantum-mechanical treatment through the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism and corresponding one-to-one semi-classical framework based upon Boltzmann transport theory for the narrow-bandwidth electronic energy organic semiconductor crystal material and device. In this process, we have formulated electronic self-energy interaction with acoustic and polar optical phonon mode with one phonon and two phonon interactions through Feyn…
Time-symmetric quantum mechanics can be described in the usual Weyl--Wigner--Moyal formalism (WWM) by using the properties of the Wigner distribution, and its generalization, the cross-Wigner distribution. The use of the latter makes clear a strongly oscillating interference between the pre- and post-selected states. This approach allows us to give explicit formulas for the state reconstruction problem, thus generalizing known results to the case of arbitrary observables. In a forthcoming paper we will extend these results to other quantization schemes.
We present a mathematical formalism of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics, following the Dirac-von Neumann formalism of quantum mechanics. In this formalism, the state postulate is the same as in the Dirac-von Neumann formalism, but the observable postulate should be changed to include para-Hermitian operators (spectral operators of scalar type with real spectrum) representing observable, as such both the measurement postulate and the evolution postulate must be modified accordingly. This is based on a Stone type theorem as proved here that the dynamics of non-Hermitian quantum systems is governe…
The main goal of this paper is to put on solid mathematical grounds the so-called Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) transport formalism for open systems. In particular, we derive the Jauho-Meir-Wingreen formula for the time-dependent current through an interacting sample coupled to non-interacting leads. Our proof is non-perturbative and uses neither complex-time Keldysh contours, nor Langreth rules of 'analytic continuation'. We also discuss other technical identities (Langreth, Keldysh) involving various many body Green's functions. Finally, we study the Dyson equation for the advanced…
Based on some results on reparmetrisation of time in Hamiltonian path integral formalism, a pseudo time formulation of operator formalism of quantum mechanics is presented. Relation of reparametrisation of time in quantum with super symmetric quantum mechanics is established. We show how some important concepts such as shape invariance and tools like isospectral deformation appear in pseudo time quantum mechanics.
We reformulate quantum tunneling in a multi-dimensional system where the tunneling sector is non-linearly coupled to oscillators. The WKB wave function is explicitly constructed under the assumption that the system was in the ground state before tunneling. We find that the quantum state after tunneling can be expressed in the language of the conventional in-in formalism. Some implications of the result to cosmology are discussed.
A general procedure for construction of the formalism of quantum beam optics for any particle is reviewed. The quantum formalism of spin-1/2 particle beam optics is presented starting {\em ab initio} with the Dirac equation. As an example of application the case of normal magnetic quadrupole lens is discussed. In the classical limit the quantum formalism leads to the well-known Lie algebraic formalism of classical particle beam optics.
As the first step in an approach to the solution of Hilbert's sixth problem, a general scheme of mechanics, called `supmech', is developed integrating noncommutative symplectic geometry and noncommutative probability theory in an algebraic framework; it has quantum mechanics (QM) and classical mechanics as special subdisciplines and facilitates an autonomous development of QM and satisfactory treatments of quantum-classical correspondence and quantum measurements (including a straightforward \emph{derivation} of the von Neumann reduction rule). The scheme associates, with every `experimentally…
