We report a quark spin calculation from the anomalous Ward identity with overlap fermions on 2+1 flavor dynamical fermion configurations with light sea quark masses. Such a formulation decomposes the divergence of the flavor-singlet axial-vector current into a quark pseudoscalar term and a triangle anomaly term, flavor by flavor. A large negative contribution from the anomaly term is observed and it is canceled within errors by the contribution from the pseudoscalar term in the disconnected insertion in the heavy quark region. On the other hand, net negative contributions are obtained for the light and strange quarks in the disconnected insertion, since their quark pseudoscalar terms are smaller than that of the heavy quark. Our results are obtained from the 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion configurations on the 24^3*64 lattice with a-1 = 1.78(5) GeV and the light sea quark at m_π = 330 MeV. We use the overlap fermion for the valence and the quark loop so that the renormalization constants Z_m and Z_P cancel in the pseudoscalar operator 2mP. In addition, the overlap Dirac operator is used to calculate the local topological charge in the anomaly so that there is no renormalization for the anomaly term either. In this study, we find the total quark spin to be small mainlyly due to the large negative anomaly term which could be the source for the 'proton spin crisis'.
We show that supersymmetry Ward identities contain an anomalous term which takes the form of a surface term in Hilbert space. In the one-instanton sector the anomalous term is the integral of a total rho-derivative where rho is the instanton's size. There are cases where the anomalous term is non-zero, and cannot be modified by subtractions. This constitutes a supersymmetry anomaly. The derivation is based on Feynman rules suitable for any non-perturbative sector of a weakly-coupled, renormalizable gauge theory.
We derive the anomalous conformal Ward identities for ${\cal N}=4$ SYM Wilson loops on polygon-like contours with edges formed by circular arcs. With a suitable choice of parameterisation they are very similarly to those for local correlation functions. Their solutions have a conformally covariant factor depending on the distances of the corners times a conformally invariant remainder factor depending, besides on cross ratios of the corners, on the cusp angles and angles parameterising the torsion of the contours.
We calculate the intrinsic quark spin contribution to the total proton spin using overlap valence quarks on three ensembles of $2+1$-flavor RBC/UKQCD domain-wall configurations with different lattice spacings. The lowest pion mass of the ensembles is around 171 MeV which is close to the physical point. With overlap fermions and topological charge derived from the overlap operator, we verify the anomalous Ward identity between nucleon states with momentum transfer. Both the connected and disconnected insertions of the axial-vector current are calculated. For the disconnected-insertion part, the…
We present a calculation of the strange and charm quark contributions to the nucleon spin from the anomalous Ward identity (AWI). It is performed with overlap valence quarks on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations on a $24^3 \times 64$ lattice with the light sea mass at $m_π = 330$ MeV. To satisfy the AWI, the overlap fermion for the pseudoscalar density and the overlap Dirac operator for the topological density, which do not have multiplicative renormalization, are used to normalize the form factor of the local axial-vector current at finite $q^2$. For the charm quark, we find …
A supersymmetry anomaly is found in the presence of non-perturbative fields. When the action is expressed in terms of the correct quantum variables, anomalous surface terms appear in its supersymmetric variation - one per each collective coordinate. The anomalous surface terms do not vanish in general when inserted in two- or higher-loop bubble diagrams, and generate a violation of the SUSY Ward identities.
The contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the fermion triangle loop diagrams connected to the muon line by a photon and a $Z$ boson is reanalyzed in the unitary gauge. With use of the anomalous axial-vector Ward identity, it is shown that the calculation in the unitary gauge exactly coincides with the one in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. The part which arises from the ordinary axial-vector Ward identity corresponds to the contribution of the neutral Goldstone boson. For the top-quark contribution, the one-parameter integral form is obtained up to the order of $m_μ^2/m_Z^2$. The…
Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we study the Ward identities and the equations of gauge dependence in potentially anomalous general gauge theories, renormalizable or not. A crucial new term, absent in manifestly nonanomalous theories, is responsible for interesting effects. We prove that gauge invariance always implies gauge independence, which in turn ensures perturbative unitarity. Precisely, we consider potentially anomalous theories that are actually free of gauge anomalies thanks to the Adler-Bardeen theorem. We show that when we make a canonical transformation on the tree-level a…
We extend a previous computation of the TJJ correlator, involving the energy-momentum tensor of an abelian gauge theory and two vector currents, to the case of mixed axial-vector/vector currents. The study is performed in analogy to the case of the $AVV$ vertex for the chiral anomaly. We derive the general structure of the anomalous Ward identities and provide explicit tests of their consistency using Dimensional Reduction. Mixed massive correlators of the form $TJ_V J_A$ are shown to vanish both by Ward identities and by C-invariance. The result is characterized by the appearance of massless …
We initiate a systematic study of the consequences of (super)conformal symmetry of massless scattering amplitudes. The classical symmetry is potentially broken at the quantum level by infrared and ultraviolet effects. We study its manifestations on the finite hard part of the scattering process. The conformal Ward identities in momentum space are second-order differential equations, difficult to analyze. We prefer to study superconformal symmetry whose generators are first-order in the momenta. Working in a massless N=1 supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model, we derive on-shell superconformal Ward i…
In the case of massless current quarks we find that the breaking of chiral symmetry usually triggers the generation of an anomalous magnetic moment for the quarks. We show that the kernel of the Ward identity for the vector vertex yields an important contribution. We compute the anomalous magnetic moment in several quark models. The results show that it is hard to escape a measurable anomalous magnetic moment for the quarks in the case of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.
The role of the chiral anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering III: Wess-Zumino-Witten contributions and chiral Ward identities for finite quark mass
We derive the formal Ward identities relating pseudoscalar susceptibilities and quark condensates in three-flavor QCD, including consistently the $η$-$η'$ sector and the $U_A(1)$ anomaly. These identities are verified in the low-energy realization provided by ChPT, both in the standard $SU(3)$ framework for the octet case and combining the use of the $U(3)$ framework and the large-$N_c$ expansion of QCD to account properly for the nonet sector and anomalous contributions. The analysis is performed including finite temperature corrections as well as the calculation of $U(3)$ quark condensates a…
We discuss the structure of the non-perturbative fermion-boson vertex in quenched QED. We show that it is possible to construct a vertex which not only ensures that the fermion propagator is multiplicatively renormalizable, obeys the appropriate Ward-Takahashi identity, reproduces perturbation theory for weak couplings and guarantees that the critical coupling at which the mass is dynamically generated is gauge independent but also makes sure that the value for the anomalous dimension for the mass function is strictly 1, as Holdom and Mahanta have proposed.
We calculate the amplitudes of $b\to s$ transition in extension of the Standard Model with $Wtb$ anomalous couplings. We found that i) there exist the Ward identity violating terms in effective vertix of $b\to sγ$. The terms, which come from the tensor parts of $Wtb$ anomalies, and can be canceled exactly by introducing corresponding $Wtbγ$ interactions, ii) $Br(B_{s} \to μ^{+}μ^{-})$ provides unique information on $δv_L$ which is set to zero in top decay experiments, and stringent bounds on $v_R,\ g_L$ by $Br(B\to X_sγ)$ are obtained.
In the scalar $ϕ^4$ field model the dispersive approach to the trace anomaly is proposed. It is shown that it is impossible to get dispersion representation for all formfactors so that preserve both the translation and dilatation Ward identities. Subtractions which preserve energy-momentum conservation violate the classical trace Ward--Takahashi identity and give rise to an anomalous contribution to the matrix element of stress tensor $θ_μ^ν$. This contribution coincides with one-loop $β$-function in accordance with previous analyses based on RG technique.
We study the realization of anomalous Ward identities in deconstructed (latticized) supersymmetric theories. In a deconstructed four-dimensional theory with N=2 supersymmetry, we show that the chiral symmetries only appear in the infrared and that the anomaly is reproduced in the usual framework of lattice perturbation theory with Wilson fermions. We then realize the theory on the world-volume of fractional D-branes on an orbifold. In this brane realization, we show how deconstructed theory anomalies can be computed via classical supergravity. Our methods and observations are more generally ap…
A symmetry-preserving treatment of mesons, within a Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations approach, demands an interconnection between the kernels of the quark gap equation and meson Bethe-Salpeter equation. Appealing to those symmetries expressed by the vector and axial-vector Ward-Green-Takahashi identitiges (WGTI), we construct a two-body Bethe-Salpeter kernel and study its implications in the vector channel; particularly, we analyze the structure of the quark-photon vertex, which explicitly develops a vector meson pole in the timelike axis and the quark anomlaous magnetic moment ter…
The form factor for the anomalous process $γπ^* \to ππ$, $F^{3π}(s,t,u)$, is calculated as a phenomenological application of the QCD Dyson-Schwinger equations. The chiral-limit value dictated by the electromagnetic, anomalous chiral Ward identity, $F^{3π}(0,0,0)= e N_c/(12π^2 f_π^3)$, is reproduced, {\it independent} of the details of the modelling of the gluon and quark 2-point Schwinger functions. Using a parametrisation of the dressed $u$-$d$ quark 2-point Schwinger function that provides a good description of pion observables, such as $π$-$π$ scattering-lengths and the electromagnetic pion…
We present a study of the mechanism of anomaly cancellation using only transverse invariant amplitudes on anomaly diagrams at higher perturbative orders. The method is the realization of the Green-Schwarz (GS) mechanism at field theory level, which restores the Ward identities by a subtraction of the anomaly pole. Some of the properties of the GS vertex are analyzed both in the context of unitarity and of the organization of the related perturbative expansion. We investigate the role played by the GS and the Wess-Zumino vertices in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and in the hyperfine…
In this paper, we discuss the construction of Effective Field Theories (EFTs) in which a chiral fermion, charged under both gauge and global symmetries, is integrated out. Inspired by typical axion models, these symmetries can be spontaneously broken, and the global ones might also be anomalous. In this context, particular emphasis is laid on the derivative couplings of the Goldstone bosons to the fermions, as these lead to severe divergences and ambiguities when building the EFT. We show how to precisely solve these difficulties within the path integral formalism, by adapting the anomalous Wa…
The anomalous pseudoscalar-photon vertex is studied in real time in and out of equilibrium in a constituent quark model. The goal is to understand the in-medium modifications of this vertex, exploring the possibility of enhanced isospin breaking by electromagnetic effects as well as the formation of neutral pion condensates in a rapid chiral phase transition in peripheral, ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. In equilibrium the effective vertex is afflicted by infrared and collinear singularities that require hard thermal loop (HTL) and width corrections of the quark propagator. The resumme…
The status of lattice calculations of the quark spin, the quark orbital angular momentum, the glue angular momentum and glue spin in the nucleon is summarized. The quark spin calculation is recently carried out from the anomalous Ward identity with chiral fermions and is found to be small mainly due to the large negative anomaly term which is believed to be the source of the `proton spin crisis'. We also present the first calculation of the glue spin at finite nucleon momenta.
Lattice calculations of the proton spin components is reviewed. The lattice results of the quark spin from the axial-vector current matrix element at $\sim 0.3- 0.4$ is smaller than those from the constituent quark models. This is largely due to the fact that the vacuum polarization contribution from the disconnected insertion is negative. Its connection with the anomalous Ward identity is clarified and verified numerically. This resolves the contentious issue in the `proton spin crisis'. The glue spin and angular momentum are found to be large and there is notable contribution from the quark …
We formulate the general form of omega-Z-gamma vertex in the framework based on the hidden local symmetry (HLS), which arises from the gauge invariant terms for intrinsic parity-odd (IP-odd) part of the effective action. Those terms are given as the homogeneous part of the general solution (having free parameters) to the Wess-Zumino (WZ) anomaly equation and hence are not determined by the anomaly, in sharp contrast to the Harvey-Hill-Hill (HHH) action where the relevant vertex is claimed to be uniquely determined by the anomaly. We show that, even in the framework that HHH was based on, the o…
