We study the implications of non-standard Higgs Yukawa couplings to light quarks on Higgs-portal dark matter phenomenology. Saturating the present experimental bounds on up-quark, down-quark, or strange-quark Yukawa couplings, the predicted direct dark matter detection scattering rate can increase by up to four orders of magnitude. The effect on the dark matter annihilation cross section, on the other hand, is subleading unless the dark matter is very light -- a scenario that is already excluded by measurements of the Higgs invisible decay width. We investigate the expected size of corrections in multi-Higgs-doublet models with natural flavor conservation, the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model, the Giudice-Lebedev model of light quark masses, minimal flavor violation new physics models, Randall-Sundrum, and composite Higgs models. We find that an enhancement in the dark matter scattering rate of an order of magnitude is possible. Finally, we point out that a discovery of Higgs-portal dark matter could lead to interesting bounds on the light-quark Yukawa couplings.
Analyzing the neutrino Yukawa effect in the freeze-out process of a generic dark matter candidate with right-handed neutrino portal, we identify the parameter regions satisfying the observed dark matter relic density as well as the current Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. limits and the future CTA reach on gamma-ray signals. In this scenario the dark matter couples to the Higgs boson at one-loop level and thus could be detected by spin-independent nucleonic scattering for a reasonable range of the relevant parameters.
We consider a Dirac singlet fermion as thermal dark matter for explaining the X-ray line in the context of a supersymmetric Higgs-portal model or a generalized Dirac NMSSM. The Dirac singlet fermion gets a mass splitting due to their Yukawa couplings to two Higgs doublets and their superpartners, Higgsinos, after electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that a correct relic density can be obtained from thermal freeze-out, due to the co-annihilation with Higgsinos for the same Yukawa couplings. We discuss the phenomenology of the Higgsinos in this model such as displaced vertices at the LHC.
The nature of dark matter and the fundamental quantum structure of spacetime could be directly linked in the asymptotic-safety framework. A toy model for the visible Higgs-Yukawa sector of the Standard Model, coupled to a dark sector through a portal coupling, provides a very first example for a model that simultaneously i) could become asymptotically safe at non-vanishing portal coupling, ii) could feature a strongly enhanced predictive power with calculable values for all interactions and thereby iii) give rise to calculable relations between the masses of the dark particles, their self-inte…
We discuss the phenomenology of many Higgs doublet model - the model where each Higgs isodoublet couples with each own quark and lepton with relatively big Yukawa coupling constants. Namely, we discuss the discovery potential of the Higgs bosons at LHC and find lower mass limits on nonstandard Higgs bosons from FNAL data.
We explore the electroweak vacuum stability in the framework of a recently proposed paradigm for the origin of Yukawa couplings. These arise as low energy effective couplings radiatively generated by portal interactions with a hidden, or dark, sector at the one-loop level. Possible tree-level Yukawa couplings are forbidden by a new underlying symmetry, assumed to be spontaneously broken by the vacuum expectation value of a new scalar field above the electroweak scale. As a consequence, the top Yukawa interaction ceases to behave as a local operator at energies above the new sector scale and, t…
In the classic type I seesaw mechanism with very heavy right-handed (RH) neutrinos, it is possible to account for dark matter via RH neutrino portal couplings to a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP) dark sector. However, for large RH neutrino masses, gravity can play an important role. We study the interplay between the neutrino portal through the right-handed neutrinos and the gravity portal through the massless spin-2 graviton in producing dark matter particles in the early universe. As a concrete example, we consider the minimal and realistic Littlest Seesaw model with two RH neutri…
We propose a minimal seesaw extension to simultaneously account for realistic neutrino mass and mixing, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis and a viable dark matter relic density, in which two right-handed neutrinos are coupled to a dark Dirac fermion and complex scalar field, both charged under a global $U(1)_D$ symmetry. As a concrete example, we consider the Littlest Seesaw model which describes neutrino mass and mixing and accounts for leptogenesis, thereby fixing the neutrino Yukawa couplings and right-handed neutrino masses. By considering the freeze-in production mecha…
Nonstandard CP violation in the Higgs sector can play an essential role in electroweak baryogenesis. We calculate the full two-loop matching conditions of the standard model, with Higgs Yukawa couplings to light quarks modified to include arbitrary CP-violating phases, onto an effective Lagrangian comprising CP-odd electric and chromoelectric light-quark (up, down, and strange) dipole operators. We find large isospin-breaking contributions of the electroweak diagrams. Using these results, we obtain significant constraints on the phases of the light-quark Yukawas from experimental bounds on the…
We perform a comprehensive search for Standard Model extensions inspired by asymptotic safety. Our models feature a singlet matrix scalar field, three generations of vector-like leptons, and direct links to the Higgs and flavor sectors via new Yukawa and portal couplings. A novel feature is that the enlarged scalar sector may spontaneously break lepton flavor universality. We provide a complete two-loop renormalization group analysis of the running gauge, Yukawa, and quartic couplings to find ultraviolet fixed points and the BSM critical surface of parameters, $i.e.$ the set of boundary condit…
Vector-like fermions charged under both the Standard Model and a new dark gauge group arise in many theories of new physics. If these fermions include an electroweak doublet and singlet with equal dark charges, they can potentially connect to the Higgs field through a Yukawa coupling in analogy to the standard neutrino portal. With such a coupling, fermion loops generate exotic decays of the Higgs boson to one or more dark vector bosons. In this work we study a minimal realization of this scenario with an Abelian dark group. We investigate the potential new Higgs decays modes, we compute their…
In a scenario of Higgs portal dark matter, Higgs exchange processes are essential for both dark matter annihilation in the early Universe and direct search experiments. The CDMS II collaboration has recently released their final results on direct dark matter searches. We study a scalar dark matter model with multi-Higgs doublets under the constraint from the CDMS II results and also from the WMAP data. We find that the possible maximal value for the branching ratio of the invisible decay of the Higgs boson can be significantly greater than that in the Higgs portal model with one Higgs doublet,…
In most models of the dark sector, dark matter is charged under some new symmetry to make it stable. We explore the possibility that not just dark matter, but also the force carrier connecting it to the visible sector is charged under this symmetry. This dark mediator then acts as a Double-Dark Portal. We realize this setup in the \emph{dark mediator Dark matter} model (dmDM), featuring a fermionic DM candidate $χ$ with Yukawa couplings to light scalars $ϕ_i$. The scalars couple to SM quarks via the operator $\bar q q ϕ_i^* ϕ_j/Λ_{ij}$. This can lead to large direct detection signals via the $…
We investigate a minimal neutrino portal dark matter (DM) model where a right-handed neutrino both generates the observed neutrino masses and mediates between the SM and the dark sector, which consists of a fermion and a boson. In contrast to earlier work, we explore regions of the parameter space where DM is produced via freeze-in instead of freeze-out motivated by the small neutrino Yukawa couplings in case of $\mathcal{O} \left( \mathrm{TeV} \right)$ heavy neutrinos. \\ For a non-resonant production of DM, its energy density is independent of the DM mass. Assuming a democratic coupling stru…
We investigate the phenomenology of scalar singlet dark matter candidates that couple dominantly to the Standard Model via a Yukawa interaction with the top quark and a colored vector-like fermion. We estimate the viability of this vector-like portal scenario with respect to the most recent bounds from dark matter direct and indirect detection, as well as to dark matter and vector-like mediator searches at colliders. Moreover, we take QCD radiative corrections into account in all our theoretical calculations. This work complements analyses related both to models featuring a scalar singlet coup…
This work considers an extension of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector by a real, scalar singlet field, including applicability to a dark matter (DM) model with the addition of a Yukawa coupling to a Dirac fermion. The collider signatures and constraints on the mixed two-Higgs scenario are determined, including limits from Higgs production signals and exclusion searches, as well as constraints arising from the Higgs total and invisible widths. As there is overwhelming Higgs data which is consistent with a SM scenario, the case in which an additional scalar has evaded detection is further exp…
We investigate the electroweak vacuum stability in an extended version of the Standard Model which incorporates two additional singlet scalar fields and three right handed neutrinos. One of these extra scalars plays the role of dark matter while the other scalar not only helps in making the electroweak vacuum stable but also opens up the low mass window of the scalar singlet dark matter (< 500 GeV). We consider the effect of large neutrino Yukawa coupling on the running of Higgs quartic coupling. We have analyzed the constraints on the model and identify the range of parameter space which is c…
The type Ib seesaw, as an alternative explanation to the origin of neutrino mass, provides a new intriguing way to connect the neutrino physics to cosmology. In this proceeding, we consider a minimal type Ib seesaw model where the effective neutrino mass operator involves two different Higgs doublets and a heavy Dirac mass. We propose a minimal dark matter extension of this model, in which the Dirac heavy neutrino is coupled to a dark Dirac fermion and a dark complex scalar field, both odd under a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry, where the lighter one serves as a dark matter candidate. Focussing on th…
Right-handed neutrinos ($ν_{R}$) are often considered as a portal to new hidden physics. It is tempting to consider a gauge singlet scalar $(ϕ)$ that exclusively couples to $ν_{R}$ via a $ν_{R}ν_{R}ϕ$ term. Such a $ν_{R}$-philic scalar does not interact with charged fermions at tree level but loop-induced effective interactions are inevitable, which are systematically investigated in this work. The magnitude of the loop-induced couplings coincidentally meets the current sensitivity of fifth-force searches. In particular, the loop-induced coupling to muons could be tested in the recent LIGO obs…
We investigate the feasibility of the indirect detection of dark matter in a simple model using the neutrino portal. The model is very economical, with right-handed neutrinos generating neutrino masses through the Type-I seesaw mechanism and simultaneously mediating interactions with dark matter. Given the small neutrino Yukawa couplings expected in a Type-I seesaw, direct detection and accelerator probes of dark matter in this scenario are challenging. However, dark matter can efficiently annihilate to right-handed neutrinos, which then decay via active-sterile mixing through the weak interac…
Extensive searches to probe the particle nature of dark matter (DM) have been going on for some decades now but, so far, no conclusive evidence has been found. Among various options, the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP) remains one of the prime possibilities as candidates for DM near the TeV scale. Taking a phenomenological view, such null results may be explained for a generic WIMP in a Higgs-portal scenario if we allow the light-quark Yukawa couplings to assume non-Standard Model (non-SM)-like values. This follows from a cancellation among different terms in the DM-nucleon scatter…
We argue that extensions of the SM with a warped extra dimension, together with a new $\mathbb{Z}_2$-odd scalar singlet, provide a natural explanation not only for the hierarchy problem but also for the nature of fermion bulk masses and the observed dark matter relic abundance. In particular, the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the new scalar particle, which is required to naturally obtain fermion bulk masses through Yukawa-like interactions, can be the leading portal to any fermion propagating into the bulk of the extra dimension and playing the role of dark matter. Moreover, such scalar excitati…
We propose a minimal model to simultaneously account for a realistic neutrino spectrum through a type-I seesaw mechanism and a viable dark matter relic density. The model is an extension of the Littlest Seesaw model in which the two right-handed neutrinos of the model are coupled to a $Z_2$-odd dark sector via right-handed neutrino portal couplings. In this model, a highly constrained and direct link between dark matter and neutrino physics is achieved by considering the freeze-in production mechanism of dark matter. We show that the neutrino Yukawa couplings which describe neutrino mass and m…
We address the notorious metastability of the standard model (SM) and promote it to a model building task: What are the new ingredients required to stabilize the SM up to the Planck scale without encountering subplanckian Landau poles? Using the SM extended by vector-like fermions (VLFs), we chart out the corresponding landscape of Higgs stability. We find that the gauge portal mechanism, triggered by new SM charge carriers, opens up sizeable room for stability in a minimally invasive manner. We also find models with Higgs criticality, and Yukawa portals opening up at stronger coupling. Severa…
Provided the dark sector consisted of a dark scalar $ϕ$ and a dark fermion $χ$ under an exact $Z_2$ symmetry, the sterile neutrino $N$ can act as the messenger between the dark sector and standard model via the Yukawa coupling $λ_{ds} \barχϕN$. In this paper, we focus on the specific scenario $m_N>m_ϕ+m_χ$ with $χ$ being a FIMP dark matter. The decay width of dark scalar $ϕ$ is doubly suppressed by the smallness of Yukawa coupling $λ_{ds}$ and mixing angle $θ$. The delayed decay $ϕ\toχν$ will have a great impact on cosmological observables such as the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the Cosmic Micro…

We consider portal models which are ultraweakly coupled with the Standard Model, and confront them with observational constraints on dark matter abundance and isocurvature perturbations. We assume the hidden sector to contain a real singlet scalar $s$ and a sterile neutrino $ψ$ coupled to $s$ via a pseudoscalar Yukawa term. During inflation, a primordial condensate consisting of the singlet scalar $s$ is generated, and its contribution to the isocurvature perturbations is imprinted onto the dark matter abundance. We compute the total dark matter abundance including the contributions from conde…
We perform global fits of the Higgs boson couplings to all the 7 TeV, 8 TeV, and 13 TeV data available up to the Summer 2018. New measurements at 13 TeV extend to include the Higgs signal strengths exclusively measured in associated Higgs production with top-quark pair and the third-generation Yukawa couplings now have been established. Some important consequences emerge from the global fits. (i) The overall average signal strength of the Higgs boson stands at $2σ$ above the SM value ($μ= 1.10 \pm 0.05 $). (ii) For the first time the bottom-quark Yukawa coupling shows a preference of the posit…
We investigate the electroweak phase transition patterns for a recently proposed baryogenesis model with CP violation originated in the dark sector. The model includes a complex scalar singlet-Higgs boson portal, a $U(1)_l$ gauge lepton symmetry with a $Z^\prime$ gauge boson portal and a fermionic dark matter particle. We find a novel thermal history of the scalar sector, featuring a $Z_2$ breaking singlet vacuum in the early Universe driven by a dark Yukawa coupling, that induces a one-step strongly first order electroweak phase transition. We explore the parameter space that generates the ob…

We study bounds and signatures of models where the Higgs doublet has an inhomo- geneous mass or vacuum expectation value, being coupled to a hidden sector that breaks Lorentz invariance. This physics is best described by a low-energy effective Lagrangian in which the Higgs speed-of-light is smaller than c; such effect is naturally small because it is suppressed by four powers of the inhomogeneity scale. The Lorentz violation in the Higgs sector is communicated at tree level to fermions (via Yukawa interactions) and to massive gauge bosons, although the most important effect comes from one-loop…
We propose soft breaking mechanism for dark matter (DM) shift symmetry in a class of composite dark matter models, where both DM and the Higgs boson arise as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons from novel strong dynamics. Our mechanism is utilized to suppress the non-derivative portal coupling between the Higgs boson and DM particle, which can evade the stringent bound of current DM direct detection experiments. Otherwise this non-derivative portal coupling would naturally be at the same order of the Higgs quartic, rendering this class of models under severe crisis. For realizing soft breaking mecha…
In this work we consider a real scalar dark matter $S$ interacting only with $SU(2)_L$ singlet Up-type quarks $U_i=u_R,c_R,t_R$ via a vector-like fermion $ψ$ which has the same quantum number as $U_i$. The DM-nucleon scattering can proceed through both $h$-mediated Higgs portal (HP) and $ψ$-mediated vector-like portal (VLP), in which HP can receive sizable radiative corrections through the new fermions. We first study the separate constraints on the new Yukawa couplings $y_i$ and find that the constraints of XENON1T results are strong on $y_1$ from VLP scattering and on $y_3$ from its radiativ…
We show that conventional Higgs compositeness conditions can be achieved by the running of large Higgs-Yukawa couplings involving right-handed neutrinos that become active at $\sim 10^{13}- 10^{14}$ GeV. Together with a somewhat enhanced quartic coupling, arising by a Higgs portal interaction to a dark matter sector, we can obtain a Higgs boson composed of neutrinos. This is a "next-to-minimal" dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking scheme.
We explore a novel possibility that dark matter has a light mass below 1GeV in a lepton portal dark matter model. There are Yukawa couplings involving dark matter, left-handed leptons and an extra scalar doublet in the model. In the light mass region, dark matter is thermally produced via its annihilation into neutrinos. In order to obtain the correct relic abundance and avoid collider bounds, a neutral scalar is required to be light while charged scalars need to be heavier than the electroweak scale. Such a mass spectrum is realized by adjusting quartic couplings in the scalar potential or in…
In the framework of type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with a scalar dark matter ($S$), we examine the wrong sign Yukawa coupling of the 125 GeV Higgs which is the only portal between the dark matter and SM sectors. After imposing the constraints from the Higgs searches at the LHC and dark matter experiments, we obtain some interesting observables: (i) The theory, oblique parameters, and the Higgs searches at the LHC can impose stringent constraints on $\tanβ$ in the case of the wrong sign Yukawa coupling of the 125 GeV Higgs. For example, for $m_H=600$ GeV and 140 GeV $<m_A<200$ GeV, $\tanβ$ is …
We investigate scenarios with $\mathcal{O}(1\mathrm{\,TeV})$ scalar leptoquarks that act as portals between the Standard Model and Dark Matter. We assume that Dark Matter is a scalar singlet $S$ which couples to a scalar leptoquark $Δ$ and the Higgs boson via the terms in the scalar potential. In addition, the leptoquark is endowed with Yukawa couplings to quarks and leptons that may address the anomalies in $B$ meson decays. We consider the $SS$ annihilation cross sections to estimate the Dark Matter relic abundance and explore the interplay between astrophysical, collider and flavour physics…
We propose a new paradigm for generating exponentially spread standard model Yukawa couplings from a new $U(1)_F$ gauge symmetry in the dark sector. Chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken among dark fermions that obtain non-vanishing masses from a non-perturbative solution to the mass gap equation. The necessary ingredient for this mechanism to work is the existence of higher derivative terms in the dark $U(1)_F$ theory, or equivalently the existence of Lee-Wick ghosts, that (i) allow for a non-perturbative solution to the mass gap equation in the weak coupling regime of the Abelian theory; (…
We construct a $Z_8$ model for leptons where all Yukawa couplings are of order unity, but known lepton masses are generated radiatively, {\it order by order}. The seed is provided by fourth generation leptons $E$ and $N$, which receive (Dirac) mass in usual way. Two additional Higgs doublets with nontrivial $Z_8$ charge are introduced to give nearest neighbor Yukawa couplings. Hence, nonstandard Higgs bosons are flavor changing in an unusual way. Loop masses are generated when $Z_8$ is {\it softly} broken down to $Z_2$. However, $e$ and $μ$ mass generation require new Higgs bosons to be at wea…
We study a simple model of thermal dark matter annihilating to standard model neutrinos via the neutrino portal. A (pseudo-)Dirac sterile neutrino serves as a mediator between the visible and the dark sectors, while an approximate lepton number symmetry allows for a large neutrino Yukawa coupling and, in turn, efficient dark matter annihilation. The dark sector consists of two particles, a Dirac fermion and complex scalar, charged under a symmetry that ensures the stability of the dark matter. A generic prediction of the model is a sterile neutrino with a large active-sterile mixing angle that…
We perform a phenomenological analysis of the observable consequences on the extended scalar sector of the SMASH (Standard Model - Axion - Seesaw - Higgs portal inflation) framework. We solve the vacuum metastability problem in a suitable region of SMASH scalar parameter spaces and discuss the one-loop correction to triple Higgs coupling $λ_{HHH}$. We also find that the correct neutrino masses and mass squared differences and baryonic asymmetry of the universe can arise from this model and consider running of the Yukawa couplings of the model. In fact, we perform a full two-loop renormalizatio…
A colored weak singlet scalar state with hypercharge 4/3 is one of the possible candidates for the explanation of the unexpectedly large forward-backward asymmetry in $t \bar t$ production as measured by the CDF and D0 experiments. We investigate the role of this state in a plethora of flavor changing neutral current processes and precision observables of down-quarks and charged leptons. Our analysis includes tree- and loop-level mediated observables in the K and B systems, the charged lepton sector, as well as the $Z \to b \bar b$ width. We perform a fit of the relevant scalar couplings. This…
We show that a minimal scenario, utilizing only the graviton as an intermediate messenger between the inflaton, the dark sector and the Standard Model (SM), is able to generate $simultaneously$ the observed relic density of dark matter (DM), the baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis, as well as a sufficiently hot thermal bath after inflation. We assume an inflaton potential of the form $V(ϕ)\propto ϕ^k$ about the minimum at the end of inflation. The possibility of reheating via minimal gravitational interactions has been excluded by constraints on dark radiation for excessive gravitational wav…
Higgs-portal interactions of fermionic dark matter -- in contrast to fermions coupled via Yukawa interactions -- can have a stabilizing effect on the standard-model Higgs potential. A non-perturbative renormalization-group analysis reveals that, similar to higher-order operators in the Higgs potential itself, the fermionic portal coupling can increase the metastability scale by only about one order of magnitude. Furthermore, this regime of very weakly coupled dark matter is in conflict with relic-density constraints. Conversely, fermionic dark matter with the right relic abundance requires eit…
We propose a Dirac neutrino portal dark matter scenario by minimally extending the particle content of the Standard Model (SM) with three right handed neutrinos ($ν_R$), a Dirac fermion dark matter candidate ($ψ$) and a complex scalar ($ϕ$), all of which are singlets under the SM gauge group. An additional $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry has been introduced for the stability of dark matter candidate $ψ$ and also ensuring the Dirac nature of light neutrinos at the same time. Both the right handed neutrinos and the dark matter thermalise with the SM plasma due to a new Yukawa interaction involving $ν_R$…
We explore simple Higgs-portal models of dark matter (DM) with spin 1/2, 3/2, and 1, respectively, applying to them constraints from the LUX and PandaX-II direct detection experiments and from LHC measurements on the 125-GeV Higgs boson. With only one Higgs doublet, we find that the spin-1/2 DM having a purely scalar effective coupling to the doublet is viable only in a narrow range of mass near the Higgs pole, whereas the vector DM is still allowed if its mass is also close to the Higgs pole or exceeds 1.4 TeV, both in line with earlier analyses. Moreover, the spin-3/2 DM is in a roughly simi…
