We have studied a mathematical relationship between holographic Wilsonian renormalization group(HWRG) and stochastic quantization(SQ) of scalar field with arbitrary mass in AdS spacetime. In the stochastic theory, the field is described by an equation with a form of harmonic oscillator with time dependent frequency and its Euclidean action also shows explicit time dependent kernel in it. We have obtained the stochastic 2-point correlation function and demonstrate that it reproduces the radial evolution of the double trace operator correctly via the suggested relation given in arXiv:1209.2242. Moreover, we justify our stochastic procedure with time dependent kernel by showing that it can be mapped to a new stochastic frame with a standard kernel without time dependence. Finally, we consider more general boundary conditions for the stochastic field to reproduce the radial evolution of the holographic boundary effective action when alternative quantization is allowed. We extensively study the Neumann boundary condition case and confirm that even in this case, the relation between HWRG and SQ is precisely hold.
We extend the relation between stochstic quantization and Holographic Wilsonian Renormalization Group to the massive fermion case in Euclidean AdS space. The original suggestion about the explicit relation between the two theories is in arXiv:1209.2242. To give a fermion bulk action the Dirichlet boundary condition and the Neumann boundary condition, there are some additional terms to the bulk action. We have confirmed that the relation also hold for massive fermion case.
We develop parallels between the holographic renormalization group in the bulk and the Wilsonian renormalization group in the dual field theory. Our philosophy differs from most previous work on the holographic RG; the most notable feature is the key role of multi-trace operators. We work out the forms of various single- and double-trace flows. The key question, `what cutoff on the field theory corresponds to a radial cutoff in the bulk?' is left unanswered, but by sharpening the analogy between the two sides we identify possible directions.
We have studied holographic Wilsonian renormalization group (HWRG) of free massless fermionic fields in AdS space and its stochastic quantization(SQ) by identifying the Euclidean action with its boundary on-shell action. The natural extension of the relation between stochastic 2-point correlation function and double trace coupling obtained from HWRG computation conjectured in arXiv:1209.2242 to fermionic fields is established. We have confirmed that the stochastic 2-point function precisely captures the radial flow of the double trace coupling via this relation.
A heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled deconfined plasma has a holographic dual description as a string moving in a black brane geometry. We apply the holographic Wilsonian renormalization method to derive a holographic effective string action dual to the heavy quark. The effective action only depends on the geometry between the black brane horizon and a cutoff localized in the radial direction, corresponding to the IR of the dual theory. We derive RG flow equations for the coefficients in the effective action and show that the force acting on the heavy quark is independent of the pos…
Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we develop an explicit formal duality between the planar limit of a d-dimensional gauge theory and a classical field theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The key ingredient is the identification of fields in AdS with generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich transforms of single-trace couplings of the QFT. We show that the Wilsonian renormalization group flow of these transformed couplings matches the holographic (Hamilton-Jacobi) flow of bulk fields along the radial direction in AdS. This result allows one to outline an AdS/CFT dictionary that doe…
We formulate a holographic Wilsonian renormalization group flow for strongly coupled systems with a gravity dual, motivated by the need to extract efficiently low energy behavior of such systems. Starting with field theories defined on a cut-off surface in a bulk spacetime, we propose that integrating out high energy modes in the field theory should correspond to integrating out a part of the bulk geometry. We describe how to carry out this procedure in practice in the classical gravity approximation using examples of scalar and vector fields. By integrating out bulk degrees of freedom all the…
We systematically present a new approach for studying the coupled linear transport of holographic systems. In this approach, the set of equations for the linear perturbations can be reduced to a first-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation expressed as the radial (renormalization group) flow equation of the transport matrices. As an important application, we use this approach to compute the DC and AC conductivities of a holographic model with momentum dissipation, which can be easily read off from the nonlinear flow equations. This method also works for transport in the presence of an …
We propose a method for determining the exact correspondence between the Wilsonian cut-off scale on the boundary and its holographically dual bulk theory. We systematically construct the multi-trace Wilsonian effective action from holographic renormalisation and evolve it by integrating out the asymptotically Anti-de Sitter bulk geometry with scalar probes. The Wilsonian nature of the effective action is shown by proving that it must be either double-trace, closing in on itself under successive integrations, or have an infinite series of multi-trace terms. Focusing on composite scalar operator…
Holographic model of massive scalar field with its self-interaction $λϕ^n$ in AdS space is able to give a logarithmic scale dependence to marginal multi trace deformation couplings on its dual conformal field theory, where $λ$ is the self-interaction coupling of the scalar field, $ϕ$ and $n$ is an integral number. In arXiv:1501.06664, the authors realize this feature by looking at bulk scalar solutions near AdS boundary imposing a specific boundary condition between the coefficients of non-normalizable and normalizable modes of the scalar field excitations. We study the same holographic model …
We study a mathematical relationship between holographic Wilsonian renormalization group and stochastic quantization framework. We extend the original proposal given in arXiv:1209.2242 to interacting theories. The original proposal suggests that fictitious time(or stochastic time) evolution of stochastic 2-point correlation function will be identical to the radial evolution of the double trace operator of certain classes of holographic models, which are free theories in AdS space. We study holographic gravity models with interactions in AdS space and establish a map between the holographic ren…
We study relation between stochastic quantization and holographic Wilsonian renormalization group flow. Considering stochastic quantization of the boundary on-shell actions with the Dirichlet boundary condition for certain $AdS$ bulk gravity theories, we find that the radial flows of double trace deformations in the boundary effective actions are completely captured by stochastic time evolution with identification of the $AdS$ radial coordinate `$r$' with the stochastic time '$t$' as $r=t$. More precisely, we investigate Langevin dynamics and find an exact relation between radial flow of the d…
We show that Polchinski equations in the D--dimensional matrix scalar field theory can be reduced at large $N$ to the Hamiltonian equations in a (D+1)-dimensional theory. In the subsector of the $\Tr ϕ^l$ (for all $l$) operators we find the exact form of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The relation to the Holographic renormalization group is discussed.
From the Wilsonian point of view, renormalisable theories are understood as submanifolds in theory space emanating from a particular fixed point under renormalisation group evolution. We show how this picture precisely applies to their gravity duals. We investigate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation satisfied by the Wilson action and find the corresponding fixed points and their eigendeformations, which have a diagonal evolution close to the fixed points. The relevant eigendeformations are used to construct renormalised theories. We explore the relation of this formalism with holographic renormalisa…
We study holographic Wilsonian RG in a general class of asymptotically AdS backgrounds with a U(1) gauge field. We consider free charged Dirac fermions in such a background, and integrate them up to an intermediate radial distance, yielding an equivalent low energy dual field theory. The new ingredient, compared to scalars, involves a `generalized' basis of coherent states which labels a particular half of the fermion components as coordinates or momenta, depending on the choice of quantization (standard or alternative). We apply this technology to explicitly compute RG flows of charged fermio…
Stochastic quantization and holographic Wilsonian renormalization group of scalar theory with generic mass, self-interaction and multiple trace deformation
We explore the role of a holographic Wilsonian cut-off in simple probe brane models with chiral symmetry breaking/restoration phase transitions. The Wilsonian cut-off allows us to define supergravity solutions for off-shell configurations and hence to define a potential for the chiral condensate. We pay particular attention to the need for configurations whose action we are comparing to have the same IR and UV boundary conditions. We exhibit new first and second order phase transitions with changing cut-off. We derive the effective potential for the condensate including mean field and BKT type…
We relate moduli stabilization ($V'=0$) in the bulk of $AdS_D$ or $dS_D$ to basic properties of the Wilsonian effective action in the holographic dual theory on $dS_{D-1}$: the single-trace terms in the action have vanishing beta functions, and higher-trace couplings are determined purely from lower-trace ones. In the de Sitter case, this encodes the maximal symmetry of the bulk spacetime in a quantity which is accessible within an observer patch. Along the way, we clarify the role of counterterms, constraints, and operator redundancy in the Wilsonian holographic RG prescription, reproducing t…
In holographic duality, dynamics along the emergent extra-dimensional space describes a renormalization group (RG) flow of the corresponding quantum field theory (QFT). Following this idea, we develop an emergent holographic description of a QFT, where not only the information of the RG flow is introduced into an IR holographic dual effective field theory (HDEFT), but also the UV information of the QFT is encoded in the HDEFT through the IR boundary condition. In particular, we argue that this dual holographic construction is self-consistent within the assumption of bulk locality, showing the …
We study the relations between two different approaches to the holographic Renormalization Group (RG) flow at the dual gravity level: One is the radial evolution of the classical equation of motion and the other is the flow equation given by the holographic Wilsonian RG coming from the cut off independence. Apparently, the two flows look different. We give general proofs that the two flows are actually equivalent. The role of the momentum continuity (MC) is essential. We show that MC together with cutoff independence gives the evolution equation of the boundary values. Equivalence of conductiv…
The Polchinski equations for the Wilsonian renormalization group in the $D$--dimensional matrix scalar field theory can be written at large $N$ in a Hamiltonian form. The Hamiltonian defines evolution along one extra holographic dimension (energy scale) and can be found exactly for the complete basis of single trace operators. We show that at low energies independently of the dimensionality $D$ the Hamiltonian system in question (for the subsector of operators without derivatives) reduces to the {\it integrable} effective theory. The obtained Hamiltonian system describes large wavelength KdV t…
We show a possible way to build the AdS/CFT correspondence starting from the quantum field theory side based on renormalization group approach. An extra dimension is naturally introduced in our scheme as the renomalization scale. The holographic wave equations are derived, with the potential term being determined by the QFT properties. We discover that only around the fixed point, i.e. the conformal limit, the potential in the bulk equations can be fully constrained, and upon this foundation, the correspondence is build. We demonstrate this fact using a 3D scalar theory in which, besides the t…
We continue the studies of our earlier proposal for an AdS/CFT correspondence for time-dependent supergravity backgrounds. We note that by performing a suitable change of variables, the dual super Yang-Mills theory lives on a flat base space, and the time-dependence of the supergravity background is entirely encoded in the time-dependent couplings (gauge and axionic) and their supersymmetric completion. This form of the SYM allows a detailed perturbative analysis to be performed. In particular the one-loop Wilsonian effective action of the boundary SYM theory is computed. By using the holograp…
In semiclassical holographic duality, the running couplings of a field theory are conventionally identified with the classical solutions of field equations in the dual gravitational theory. However, this identification is unclear when the bulk fields fluctuate. Recent work has used a Wilsonian framework to propose an alternative identification of the running couplings in terms of non-fluctuating data; in the classical limit, these new couplings do not satisfy the bulk equations of motion. We study renormalization scheme dependence in the latter formalism, and show that a scheme exists in which…
We give a wilsonian formulation of non-abelian gauge theories explicitly consistent with axial gauge Ward identitities. The issues of unitarity and dependence on the quantization direction are carefully investigated. A wilsonian computation of the one-loop QCD beta function is performed.
We explore the relation between stochastic quantization and holographic Wilsonian renormalization group flow further by studying conformally coupled scalar in $AdS_{d+1}$. We establish one to one mapping between the radial flow of its double trace deformation and stochastic 2-point correlation function. This map is shown to be identical, up to a suitable field re-definition of the bulk scalar, to the original proposal in arXiv:1209.2242.
In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy in a large class of states of two-dimensional conformal field theory in the the large central charge limit. This class of states includes the states created by the insertion of a finite number of local heavy operators. By using the monodromy analysis, we obtain the leading order entanglement entropy for the general state. We show that it is exactly captured by the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, by using the Wilsonian line prescription in the Chern-Simons formulation of the AdS$_3$ gravity.
Implementing Wilsonian renormalization group transformations in an iterative way, we develop a non-perturbative field theoretical framework, which takes into account all-loop quantum corrections organized in the $1/N$ expansion, where $N$ represents the flavor number of quantum fields. The resulting classical field theory is given by an effective Landau-Ginzburg theory for a local order parameter field, which appears in one-dimensional higher spacetime. We claim that such all-loop quantum corrections are introduced into an equation of motion for the order parameter field through the evolution …
We study holographic Wilsonian renormalization group flows for bulk spinor fields in AdS. We use this to compute the all-loop beta function for fermionic double trace operators in the dual conformal field theory.
Liouville field theory is quantized by means of a Wilsonian effective action and its associated exact renormalization group equation. For $c<1$, an approximate solution of this equation is obtained by truncating the space of all action functionals. The Ward identities resulting from the Weyl invariance of the theory are used in order to select a specific universality class for the renormalization group trajectory. It is found to connect two conformal field theories with central charges $25-c$ and $26-c$, respectively.
In this work, we present a holographic renormalization scheme for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in which the dual renormalization scheme of the boundary field theory is dimensional regularization. This constitutes a new level of precision in the holographic dictionary and paves the way for the exact matching of scheme dependent quantities, such as holographic beta functions, with field theory computations. Furthermore, the renormalization procedure identifies a local source field which satisfies the equations of motion along renormalization group flows, resolving a long-standing puz…
We find an exact coordinate transformation rule from the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole in the Poincare and the global patch to the Fefferman-Graham coordinate system. Using these results, we evaluate the corresponding holographic stress tensor and trace anomaly of the boundary theory as a function of the radial coordinate. Following the AdS/CFT correspondence, we reinterpret the radial coordinate dependence of the trace anomaly as the Wilsonian renormalization group(RG) flow of the boundary theory.
We quantize scalar fluctuations in 1+1 dimensions above a classical background kink. The properties of the effective action for the corresponding classical field are studied with an exact functional method, alternative to exact Wilsonian renormalization, where the running parameter is a bare mass, and the regulator of the quantum theory is fixed. We extend this approach, in an appendix, to a Yukawa interaction in higher dimension.
We first point out that the Laia-Tong model realizes the Lieb lattice in the holographic setup. It generates a flat band of sharp particle spectrum together with a Dirac band of unparticle spectrum. We then construct a model which opens a gap to the Dirac band so that one can realize a well-separated flat band, which can play the role of the hydrogen atom of strongly correlated systems. We then study the phase transition between the gapped and gapless phases analytically. We also made methodological progress to find a few other quantizations and we express the Green functions in any quantizati…
It was recently observed in \cite{Park:2014tia} that the holographic nature of gravity may hold a key to quantization of gravity. The so-called "holographic quantization" has been carried out in \cite{Park:2014noa,Park:2015ota} for Einstein gravity in a flat background. Generalizing the procedure to a curved background is the main goal of the present work. In particular, we consider the Einstein action expanded around a Schwarzschild background
Extremal black branes upon compactification in the near horizon throat region are known to give rise to $AdS_2$ dilaton-gravity-matter theories. Away from the throat region, the background has nontrivial profile. We interpret this as holographic renormalization group flow in the 2-dim dilaton-gravity-matter theories arising from dimensional reduction of the higher dimensional theories here. The null energy conditions allow us to formulate a holographic c-function in terms of the 2-dim dilaton for which we argue a c-theorem subject to appropriate boundary conditions which amount to restrictions…
Motivated by the various indications that holographic superfluid is BCS like at the standard quantization but BEC like at the alternative quantization, we have implemented the alternative quantization in the dynamical holographic superfluid for the first time. With this accomplishment, we further initiate the detailed investigation of quantum turbulence in finite temperature BEC by a long time stable numerical simulation of bulk dynamics, which includes the two body decay of vortex number caused by vortex pair annihilation, the onset of superfluid turbulence signaled by Kolmogorov scaling law,…
It has been observed in [Park 2014] that the physical states of the ADM formulation of 4D Einstein gravity holographically reduce and can be described by a 3D language. Obviously the approach poses the 4D covariance issue; it turns out that there are two covariance issues whose address is the main theme of the present work. Although the unphysical character of the trace piece of the fluctuation metric has been long known, it has not been taken care of in a manner suitable for the Feynman diagram computations; a proper handling of the trace piece through gauge-fixing is the key to more subtler …
It is shown that the Holographic Renormalization Group can be formulated universally within Quantum Field Theory as (the quantization of) the Hamiltonian flow on the cotangent bundle to the space of gauge-invariant single-trace operators supplied with the canonical symplectic structure. The classical Hamiltonian dynamics is recovered in the large $N$ limit.
To clarify the mathematical structure of the RG-derived holographic dual field theory, we rewrite the string-theory based conventionally utilized dual holographic effective field theory based on the ADM decomposition of the metric tensor. This comparison leads us to claim that the RG-derived emergent holographic dual field theory takes into account higher-derivative curvature terms with gauge fixing in the string-theory based conventionally utilized Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory, giving rise to the RG flow of the metric tensor beyond the AdS (anti-de Sitter space) geometry. Furthermore, we comp…
Starting with a holographic construction for a fractional quantum Hall state based on the D3-D7' system, we explore alternative quantization conditions for the bulk gauge fields. This gives a description of a quantum Hall state with various filling fractions. For a particular alternative quantization of the bulk gauge fields, we obtain a holographic anyon fluid in a vanishing background magnetic field. We show that this system is a superfluid, exhibiting the relevant gapless excitation.
We study the low energy and low momentum behavior of current correlators in a class of holographic zero-temperature finite density critical theories which do not respect the hyperscaling relation. The dual holographic description is assumed to be given by probe D-branes embedded in background geometries characterized by a dynamical critical exponent $z$ and a hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. We show that a subset of these theories with $1\leq z<2(1-θ/d)$ exhibit a stable linearly-dispersing mode in their low energy spectrum of excitations. This mode, which appears as a pole in the retarded…
Inspired by holographic Wilsonian renormalization, we propose a novel perspective on the low-energy effective actions of confining gauge theories with gravity duals. By identifying the IR-boundary value of a certain bulk field as overlapping with the lightest mode of the field theory, we derive its on-shell effective action by integrating over the rest of the geometry. We illustrate the details of this formalism by computing chiral Lagrangian coefficients in a simple AdS/QCD toy model, finding agreement with previous results. At higher orders we obtain new results in that model, including a cl…
Smoothing of field configurations is highly important for precision calculations of physical quantities on the lattice. We present a cooling method based on Stochastic Quantization with a built-in UV momentum cutoff. The latter is implemented via a UV-regularized, hence colored, noise term. Our method is tested in a two-dimensional scalar field theory. We show, that UV modes can be removed systematically without altering the physics content of the theory. The approach has an interpretation in terms of the non-perturbative (Wilsonian) renormalization group that facilitates the physics interpret…
We consider M-theory backgrounds which are gravity duals of mass deformed superconformal field theories in 2+1 dimensions. The specific examples we consider are the B_8, Stenzel, and the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena geometries. These geometries contain compact 4-cycles on which one can wrap an M5-brane to create an object which behaves effectively like a domain wall in 2+1 dimensions. We review the quantization of flux and charges of these M-theory backgrounds, and confirm that the back reaction of the domain wall shifts the charges in a manner consistent with these quantization conditions, paying part…
In this paper we consider aspects of the holographic interpretation of Taub-NUT-AdS$_4$. We review our earlier results which show that TNAdS$_4$ gives rise to a holographic three-dimensional conformal fluid having constant vorticity. We then study the holographic relevance of the Misner string by considering bulk scalar fluctuations. The scalar fluctuations organize naturally into representations of the $SU(2)\times \mathbb{R}$ isometry algebra. If we require the string's invisibility we obtain a Dirac-like quantization relating the frequency of the scalar field modes to the NUT charge. As the…
We revisit the construction of self-dual field theory in 4l+2 dimensions using Chern-Simons theory in 4l+3 dimensions, building on the work of Witten. Careful quantization of the Chern-Simons theory reveals all the topological subtleties associated with the self-dual partition function, including the generalization of the choice of spin structure needed to define the theory. We write the partition function for arbitrary torsion background charge, and in the presence of sources. We show how this approach leads to the formulation of an action principle for the self-dual field.
We present and study a 4d Chern-Simons (CS) model whose gauge symmetry is encoded in a balanced Lie group crossed module. Using the derived formal set-up recently found, the model can be formulated in a way that in many respects closely parallels that of the familiar 3d CS one. In spite of these formal resemblance, the gauge invariance properties of the 4d CS model differ considerably. The 4d CS action is fully gauge invariant if the underlying base 4fold has no boundary. When it does, the action is gauge variant, the gauge variation being a boundary term. If certain boundary conditions are im…
The current algebra generated by fermions coupled to external gauge potentials and metrics on a manifold with boundary is discussed. It is shown that the previous methods, based on index theory arguments and used in the case without boundaries, carry over to the present problem. The resulting current algebra is the same as obtained from a quantization of bosonic Chern-Simons theories on space-times with nonempty boundaries. This means that also in the fermionic setting the construction is 'holographic', the Schwinger terms reside on the boundary.
We construct gray soliton configurations, which move at constant speeds, in holographic superfluids for the first time. Since there should be no dissipation for a moving soliton to exist, we use the simplest holographic superfluid model at zero temperature, considering both the standard and alternative quantizations. For comparison purpose, we first investigate black solitons in the zero temperature holographic superfluids, which are static configurations. Then we focus on the numerical construction of gray solitons under both quantizations, which interpolate between the (static) black soliton…
