The mineral haydeeite, alpha-MgCu3(OD)6Cl2, is a S=1/2 kagome ferromagnet that displays long-range magnetic order below TC=4.2 K with a strongly reduced moment. Our inelastic neutron scattering data show clear spin-wave excitations that are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J1=-38 K and antiferromagnetic exchange Jd=+11 K across the hexagons of the kagome lattice. These values place haydeeite very close to the quantum phase transition between ferromagnetic order and non-coplanar twelve-sublattice cuboc2 antiferromagnetic order. Diffuse dynamic short-range ferromagnetic correlations observed above TC persist well into the ferromagnetically ordered phase with a behavior distinct from critical scattering.
The recently discovered natural minerals Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2 and Cu3Mg(OH)6Cl2 are spin 1/2 systems with an ideal kagome geometry. Based on electronic structure calculations, we develop a realistic model which includes couplings across the kagome hexagons beyond the original kagome model that are intrinsic in real kagome materials. Exact diagonalization studies for the derived model reveal a strong impact of these couplings on the magnetic ground state. Our predictions could be compared to and supplied with neutron scattering, thermodynamic and NMR data.
We present the hydrothermal synthesis, as well as structural and chemical analysis of single crystals on the compounds EuCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$, Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ and haydeeite, MgCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ all arising from the atacamite family. Magnetic and specific-heat measurements down to 1.8 K are carried out for these systems. EuCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$ has a frustrated antiferromagnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ground state with order at 15 K, a strong anisotropy and increased magnetization from Van Vleck paramagnetic Eu$^{3+}$ contributions. ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$(NO$_{…
Frustrated magnetism on the kagome lattice has been a fertile ground for rich and fascinating physics, ranging from experimental evidence of a spin liquid to theoretical predictions of exotic superconductivity. Among experimentally realized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome magnets, herbertsmithite, kapellasite, and haydeeite [(Zn,Mg)Cu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$] are all well described by a three-parameter Heisenberg model, but they exhibit distinctly different physics. We address the problem using a pseudofermion functional renormalization-group approach and analyze the low-energy physics in the experi…
Spin-1/2 magnets with kagome geometry, being for years a generic object of theoretical investigations, have few real material realizations. Recently, a DFT-based microscopic model for two such materials, kapellasite Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2 and haydeeite Cu3Mg(OH)6Cl2, was presented [O. Janson, J. Richter and H. Rosner, arXiv:0806.1592]. Here, we focus on the intrinsic properties of real spin-1/2 kagome materials having influence on the magnetic ground state and the low-temperature excitations. We find that the values of exchange integrals are strongly dependent on O--H distance inside the hydroxyl group…
The antiferromagnetism in $α$-Cu$_3$Mg(OH)$_6$Br$_2$ was studied by magnetic-susceptibility, specific-heat and neutron-diffraction measurements. The crystal structure consists of Cu$^{2+}$ kagome layers with Mg$^{2+}$ ions occupying the centers of the hexagons, separated by Br$^{1-}$ ions. The magnetic system orders antiferromagnetically at 5.4 K with the magnetic moments aligned ferromagnetically within the kagome planes. The ordered moment is 0.94 $μ_B$, suggesting little quantum and geometrical fluctuations. By comparing the magnetic and specific-heat properties with those of the haydeeite,…
Unconventional ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the imbalanced kagome-lattice Hubbard model are investigated by the mean-field theory and determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Due to the asymmetric band structure of kagome lattice, the spin-$z$ ferromagnetic order intrinsically exists in the system, which is first enhanced by the interaction, and then continuously destructed after reaching a maximum at a moderate interaction strength. In contrast, the $xy$-plane ferromagnetism develops only above a critical interaction, which is estimated to be $U_c/t=3.65 \pm 0.05$ by finite-size sca…
We report the crystal structure and unconventional magnetic ordering of Cs_2Cu_3CeF_{12}, which is composed of buckled kagome lattice of Cu^{2+} ions. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is fairly anisotropic, so that the present spin system can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. Although the direct exchange interactions between neighboring spins were found to be all antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic magnetic ordering of the dangling spins was observed. Magnetization exhibits a plat…
In this work, topological properties of a ferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a breathing kagome lattice are investigated extensively in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. While the kagome ferromagnet hosts only a single first order topological phase, the breathing kagome system exhibits multiple first and second order topological phases along with their coexistence. Magnon dispersion relation is obtained by using linear spin wave theory. Flat band and Dirac cones are obtained in the absence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. A topological phase diagram is presented where seve…
We report magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystals of the $S=1/2$ (Cu$% ^{+2}$) kagomé compound Cu(1,3-benzendicarboxylate). The $μ$SR is carried to temperatures as low as 45 mK. The spin Hamiltonian parameters are determined from the analysis of the magnetization and ESR data. We find that this compound has anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions. Nevertheless, no spin freezing is observed even at temperatures two orders of magnitude lower than the coupling constants. In light of this finding, the relation between persistent…
By means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, combined with a stochastic analytic continuation, we examine the spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 planar (XY) ferromagnet on the kagome lattice with additional four-site ring exchange terms. Such exchange processes were previously considered to lead into an extended $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid phase beyond a quantum critical point from the XY-ferromagnet. We examine the dynamical spin structure factor in the non-magnetic regime and probe for signatures of spin fractionalization. Furthermore, we contrast our findings and the corresponding energy scales of…
The magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on single-crystalline Gd_3_Ru_4_Al_12_ with a distorted Kagome lattice structure. This spin system is regarded as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of XY like Heisenberg model at low temperatures. The magnetic phase diagrams indicate the existence of frustration and Z_2_ degeneracy. The magnetization and specific heat imply the successive phase transitions with partial disorder and a T-shaped spin structure in the ground state.
We report an unconventional class of pressure induced quantum phase transition, possessing two bicritical points at 6.25 GPa in URhSn. This unique transformation accompanies a Fermi surface reconstruction, demarcating competing ordered phases suitably described with localized and itinerant description of the magnetic $5f$-electrons. Ferromagnetic fluctuations over a wide range of temperatures and pressures in the pressure-induced low temperature phase are evidenced by a robust $T^{5/3}$ temperature dependence of resistivity up to 11 GPa, which is a characteristic of elusive marginal Fermi-liqu…
Materials with zero energy band gap display intriguing properties including high sensitivity of the electronic band structure to external stimulus such as pressure or magnetic field. An interesting candidate for zero energy band gap are Weyl nodes at the Fermi level EF. A prerequisite for the existence of Weyl nodes is to either have inversion or time reversal symmetry broken. Weyl nodes in systems with broken time reversal symmetry are ideal to realize the tunability of the electronic band structure by magnetic field. Theoretically, it has been shown that in ferromagnetic Weyl materials, the …
The control of topological quantum materials is the prerequisite for novel devices exploiting these materials. Here we propose that the room temperature ferromagnet Fe3Sn2, whose fundamental building blocks are Kagome bilayers of iron, hosts Weyl nodes at the Fermi level which can move in momentum space depending on the direction of the magnetization, itself readily controlled either by modest external fields or temperature. The proposal is derived from density functional calculations, including a mean field treatment of Hubbard repulsion U, which have been validated by comparison with angle-r…
Frustrated itinerant ferromagnets, with non-collinear static spin structures, are an exciting class of material as their spin chirality can introduce a Berry phase in the electronic scattering and lead to exotic electronic phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). This study presents a reexamination of the magnetic properties of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, a metallic ferromagnet, based on the 2-dimensional kagome bilayer structure. Previously thought of as a conventional ferromagnet, we show using a combination of SQUID measurements, symmetry analysis and powder neutron diffraction, that Fe$_3$Sn$_…
A single ferromagnetic kagome layer is predicted to realize a Chern insulator with quantized Hall conductance, which upon stacking can become a Weyl-semimetal with large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and magneto-optical activity. Indeed, in the kagome bilayer material Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, a large AHE was detected, however, it still awaits the direct probing of the responsible band structure features by bulk sensitive methods. We measure the optical, both diagonal and Hall, conductivity spectra over a broad spectral range and identify the origin of the intrinsic AHE with the help of momentum- and band-d…
Novel magnetic phases are expected to occur in highly frustrated spin systems. Here we study the structurally perfect kagomé antiferromagnet CdCu$_3$(OH)$_6$(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$H$_2$O by magnetization, magnetic torque, and heat capacity measurements using single crystals. An antiferromagnetic order accompanied by a small spontaneous magnetization that surprisingly is confined in the kagomé plane sets in at $T_\mathrm{N}\approx$4 K, well below the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction $J / k_B$ = 45 K.This suggests that a unique $\bf q = 0$ type 120$^\circ$ spin structure with "negative" (downward)…
Neutron scattering measurements show the ferromagnetic XY pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 to display strong quasi-two dimensional (2D) spin correlations at low temperature, which give way to long range order (LRO) under the application of modest magnetic fields. Rods of scattering along < 111 > directions due to these 2D spin correlations imply a magnetic decomposition of the cubic pyrochlore system into decoupled kagome planes. A magnetic field of ~0.5 T applied along the [1-10] direction induces a transition to a 3D LRO state characterized by long-lived, dispersive spin waves. Our measurements map out a…
The magnetic properties of Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$ were investigated through magnetization and specific heat measurements. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$ is composed of a buckled kagome lattice of Cu$^{2+}$, which is stacked along the b axis. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is strongly anisotropic. Consequently, Cs$_2$Cu$_3$CeF$_{12}$ can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. The dangling spins couple with one another via effective exchange interactions, which are mediated by chain spins. …
Experimental evidence for a plethora of low energy spin excitations in the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 may be understandable in terms of an extended Fermi surface of spinons coupled to a U(1) gauge field. We carry out variational calculations to examine the possibility that such a state may be energetically viable. A Gutzwiller-projected wavefunction reproduces the dimerization of a kagome strip found previously by DMRG. Application to the full kagome lattice shows that the inclusion of a small ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction favors a ground state with a spino…
Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the extended $XXZ$ model on the kagome lattice. A $\mathbb Z_2$ quantum spin liquid phase with effective even Ising gauge field structure emerges from the delicate balance among three symmetry-breaking phases including stripe solid, staggered solid and ferromagnet. This $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid is stabilized by an extended interaction related to the Rokhsar-Kivelson potential in the quantum dimer model limit. The phase transitions from the staggered solid to a spin liquid or ferromagnet are found to be first order and so is the …
We study quantum spin systems with a proper combination of geometric frustration, spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism. We argue that such a system is likely to be in a chiral spin state, a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state for bosonic spin degrees of freedom. The energy scale of the bosonic FQH state is of the same order as the spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism --- overall much higher than the energy scale of FQH states in semiconductors.

Magnetization, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements were performed to study a magnetic transition in jarosite, a spin-5/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the kagome plane, magnetizations in the ordered state show a sudden increase at a critical field H_c, indicative of the transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic states. This sudden increase arises as the spins on alternate kagome planes rotate 180 degrees to ferromagnetically align the canted moments along the field direction. The canted moment on a single kagome plane …

Topological magnon is a vibrant research field gaining more and more attention in the past few years. Among many theoretical proposals and limited experimental studies, ferromagnetic Kagome lattice emerges as one of the most elucidating systems. Here we report neutron scattering studies of YMn6Sn6, a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic Kagome planes. This system undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition upon cooling with the incommensurability along the out-of-plane direction. We observe magnon band gap opening at the symmetry-protected K points and …
A ferromagnet with spin anisotropies on the 2D Kagome lattice is theoretically studied. This is a typical example of the flat-band ferromagnet. The Berry phase induced by the tilting of the spins opens the band gap and quantized Hall conductance σ_{xy}=\pm e^2/h is realized without external magnetic field. This is the most realistic chiral spin state based on the ferromagnetism. We also discuss the implication of our results to anomalous Hall effect observed in the metallic pyrochlore ferromagnets R_2Mo_2O_7(R=Nd, Sm, Gd).
The magnetic properties of Co3V2O8 have been studied by single-crystal neutron-diffraction. In zero magnetic field, the observed broadening of the magnetic Bragg peaks suggests the presence of disorder both in the low-temperature ferromagnetic and in the higher-temperature antiferromagnetic state. The field dependence of the intensity and position of the magnetic reflections in Co3V2O8 reveals a complex sequence of phase transitions in this Kagome staircase compound. For H//a, a commensurate-incommensurate-commensurate transition is found in a field of 0.072 T in the antiferromagnetic phase at…
We investigate the magnetic symmetry of the topological antiferromagnetic material Mn$_3$Ge by using torque measurements. Below the Neel temperature, detailed angle-dependent torque measurements were performed on Mn$_3$Ge single crystals in directions parallel and perpendicular to the Kagome basal plane. The out-of plane torque data exhibit $\pm\sinθ$ and $\sin2θ$ behaviors, of which the former results from the spontaneous ferromagnetism within the basal plane and the latter from the in- and out-of-plane susceptibility anisotropy. The reversible component of the in-plane torque exhibits $\sin6…
We consider the thermodynamic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional spin-half Heisenberg ferromagnet on the stacked square and the stacked kagomé lattices by using the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method. We calculate the critical temperature $T_C$, the uniform static susceptibility $χ$, the correlation lengths $ξ_ν$ and the magnetization $M$ and investigate the short-range order above $T_C$. We find that $T_C$ and $M$ at $T>0$ are smaller for the stacked kagomé lattice which we attribute to frustration effects becoming relevant at finite temperatures.
We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…
The kagome lattice is a two-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles known as a platform for exotic quantum magnetic states. Theoretical work has predicted that the kagome lattice may also host Dirac electronic states that could lead to topological and Chern insulating phases, but these have evaded experimental detection to date. Here we study the d-electron kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ designed to support bulk massive Dirac fermions in the presence of ferromagnetic order. We observe a temperature independent intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity persisting above room temperature suggestiv…
A common feature of topological insulators is that they are characterized by topologically invariant quantity such as the Chern number and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index. This quantity distinguishes a nontrivial topological system from a trivial one. A topological phase transition may occur when there are two topologically distinct phases, and it is usually defined by a gap closing point where the topologically invariant quantity is ill-defined. In this paper, we show that the magnon bands in the strained (distorted) kagome-lattice ferromagnets realize an example of a topological magnon phase transi…
The Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice has been studied for the purpose of finding exotic states such as quantum spin liquid and topological orders. On the kagome lattice, in spite of a spin-liquid ground state in the Heisenberg model, the stability of the spin-liquid state has hardly been studied in the presence of the Kitaev interaction. Therefore, we investigate the ground state of the classical and quantum spin systems of the kagome Kitaev-Heisenberg model. In the classical system, we obtain an exact phase diagram that has an eight-fold degenerated canted ferromagnetic phase …
We perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the dynamic phase transition properties of the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model on the kagome lattice in the presence of square-wave oscillating magnetic field. Through detailed finite-size scaling analysis, we study universality aspects of the non-equilibrium phase transition. Obtained critical exponents indicate that the two-dimensional kagome-lattice kinetic Ising model belongs to the same universality class with the corresponding Ising model in equilibrium. Moreover, dynamic critical exponent of the local moves used in simulati…
Magnetization and specific heat measurements have been carried out on Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$ single crystals, in which Cu$^{2+}$ ions with spin-1/2 form a regular Kagomé lattice. The antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between neighboring Cu$^{2+}$ spins is $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 360$ K and 540 K for Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$, respectively. Structural phase transitions were observed at $T_{\rm t}\simeq 210$ K and 175 K for Cs$_2$Cu$_3$ZrF$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_3$HfF$_{12}$, respectively. The specific heat shows a small bend anomaly indicative of…
Exploring the relationship between intriguing physical properties and structural complexity is a central topic in studying modern functional materials. Co$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$S$_{2}$, a new discovered kagome-lattice magnetic Weyl semimetal, has triggered intense interest owing to the intimate coupling between topological semimetallic states and peculiar magnetic properties. However, the origins of the magnetic phase separation and spin glass state below $T_{C}$ in this ordered compound are two unresolved yet important puzzles in understanding its magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of local symm…
We have studied the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on kagome Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet using Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT). Within SBMFT framework, Messio et al had argued that the ground state of kagome antiferromagnet is possibly a chiral topological spin liquid (Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 207204 (2012)). Thus, we have computed zero-temperature ground state phase diagram considering the time-reversal breaking states as well as fully symmetric Ansätze. We discuss the relevance of these results in experiments and other studies. Finally, we have computed the static and…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on single crystal Co3V2O8 wherein magnetic cobalt ions reside on distinct spine and cross-tie sites within kagome staircase planes. This system displays a rich magnetic phase diagram which culminates in a ferromagnetic ground state below Tc~6 K. We have studied the low-lying magnetic excitations in this phase within the kagome plane. Despite the complexity of the system at higher temperatures, linear spin-wave theory describes most of the quantitative detail of the inelastic neutron measurements. Our results show two spin-wave branches, …
We study the impact of trimerization (breathing) of the nearest-neighbor (NN) exchange on the planar XY spin-1/2 ferromagnet on the kagome lattice, including additional four-site ring exchange. For uniform NN exchange, this model has previously been shown to transit from a long-range ordered ferromagnet into a Z2 quantum spin liquid by virtue of the ring exchange. Using quantum Monte-Carlo calculations, based on the stochastic series expansion, we present results for the spin stiffness, the quantum phase diagram, the longitudinal static, as well as the transverse dynamic structure factor. Our …
The chiral edge states and the quantized Hall conductance (QHC) in the two-dimensional kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included in a general Hund's coupling region are studied. This kagomé lattice system is periodic in the $x$ direction but has two edges in the $y$ direction. Numerical results show that the strength of the Hund's coupling, as well as the spin chirality, affects the edge states and the corresponding QHC. Within the topological edge theory, we give the expression of the QHC with the winding number of the chiral edge states on the Riemman surface. This expression is also co…
We consider a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome-like chain with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic anisotropic exchange interactions. The ground state phase diagram of this model consists of the ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases. We study the ground state and the low-temperature properties on the phase boundary between these phases. The ground state on this phase boundary is macroscopically degenerate and consists of localized magnon states. We calculate the ground state degeneracy and corresponding residual entropy. The spontaneous magnetization has a jump on the phase boundary confirming th…
The two-dimensional kagome lattice hosts Dirac fermions at its Brillouin zone corners K and K', analogous to the honeycomb lattice. In the density functional theory electronic structure of ferromagnetic kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, without spin-orbit coupling we identify two energetically split helical nodal lines winding along $z$ in the vicinity of K and K' resulting from the trigonal stacking of the kagome layers. We find that hopping across A-A stacking introduces a layer splitting in energy while that across A-B stacking controls the momentum space amplitude of the helical nodal lines. The …
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated for ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 single crystal with geometrically frustrated kagome bilayer of Fe. The scaling behavior between anomalous Hall resistivity rho_{xy}^{A} and longitudinal resistivity rho_{xx} is quadratic and further analysis implies that the AHE in Fe3Sn2 single crystal should be dominated by the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger mechanism rather than extrinsic skew-scattering or side-jump mechanisms. Moreover, there is a sudden jump of anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_{xy}^{A} appearing at about 100 K where the spin-reorientation transition from th…
The orbital magnetization and its effects on the two-dimensional kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included in the general Hund's coupling region have been theoretically studied. The results show that the strength of the Hund's coupling, as well as the spin chirality, contributes to the orbital magnetization $\mathcal{M}$. Upon varying both these parameters, it is found that the two parts of $\mathcal{M}$, i.e., the conventional part $\mathbf{M}_{c}$ and the Berry-phase correction part $\mathbf{M}_Ω$, oppose each other. The anomalous Nernst conductivity is also calculated and a peak-valley…
We introduce $\mathrm{Nd_{3}Sb_{3}Mg_{2}O_{14}}$ with ideal kagome lattices of neodymium ions in ABC stacking. Thermodynamic measurements show a Curie-Weiss temperature of $Θ_{CW}=-0.12~$K, a Nd$^{3+}$ spin-1/2 Kramers doublet ground state, and a second order phase transition at $T_N=0.56(2)~$K. Neutron scattering reveals non-coplanar scalar chiral ${\bf k} =0$ magnetic order with a correlation length exceeding 400 Å= 55 $a$ and an ordered moment of $1.79(5)~μ_B$. This order includes a canted ferromagnetic component perpendicular to the kagome planes favored by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactio…
Kagome magnets are believed to have numerous exotic physical properties due to the possible interplay between lattice geometry, electron correlation and band topology. Here, we report the large anomalous Hall effect in the kagome ferromagnet LiMn$_6$Sn$_6$, which has a Curie temperature of 382 K and easy plane along with the kagome lattice. At low temperatures, unsaturated positive magnetoresistance and opposite signs of ordinary Hall coefficient for $ρ_{xz}$ and $ρ_{yx}$ indicate the coexistence of electrons and holes in the system. A large intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity of 380 $Ω^{-1}…
