Frustrated magnetism on the kagome lattice has been a fertile ground for rich and fascinating physics, ranging from experimental evidence of a spin liquid to theoretical predictions of exotic superconductivity. Among experimentally realized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome magnets, herbertsmithite, kapellasite, and haydeeite [(Zn,Mg)Cu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$] are all well described by a three-parameter Heisenberg model, but they exhibit distinctly different physics. We address the problem using a pseudofermion functional renormalization-group approach and analyze the low-energy physics in the experimentally accessible parameter range. Our analysis places kapellasite and haydeeite near the boundaries between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, implying that slight modifications could dramatically affect their magnetic properties. Inspired by this, we perform \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations of (Zn,Mg,Cd)Cu$_{3}$ (OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ at various pressures. Our results suggest that by varying pressure and composition one can traverse a paramagnetic regime between different magnetically ordered phases.
A spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice is investigated by doing triplon analysis and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. This model, inspired by Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$), has three different antiferromagnetic exchange interactions ($J_A$, $J_B$, $J_C$) on three different sets of nearest-neighbour bonds which form a kagome superlattice. While the model is bipartite and unfrustrated, its quantum phase diagram is found to be dominated by a quantum paramagnetic phase that is best described as a spin-gapped hexagonal-singlet state. The Néel antiferromagnetic order survives only in a small…
We have investigated the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of Pb-based langasite compound Pb$_3$TeMn$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ both experimentally and theoretically in the light of metal-oxygen covalency, and the consequent generation of multiferroicity. It is known that large covalency between Pb 6$p$ and O 2$p$ plays instrumental role behind stereochemical lone pair activity of Pb. The same happens here but a subtle structural phase transition above room temperature changes the degree of such lone pair activity and the system becomes ferroelectric below 310 K. Interestingly, this structu…
Compounds with a Kagome type lattice are known to exhibit magnetic frustration. Large single crystals of two compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, which are variants of a Kagome net lattice, have been grown successfully by the floating zone technique using an optical image furnace. The single crystals are of high quality and exhibit intriguing magnetic properties.
The discovery of ideal spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets Herbertsmithite and Zn-doped Barlowite represents a breakthrough in the quest for quantum spin liquids (QSLs), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy plays a prominent role in revealing the quantum paramagnetism in these compounds. However, interpretation of NMR data that is often masked by defects can be controversial. Here, we show that the most significant interaction strength for NMR, i.e. the hyperfine coupling (HFC) strength, can be reasonably reproduced by first-principles calculations for these proposed QSLs. Applying t…
We show that YCr6Ge6, comprising a kagome lattice made up of Cr atoms, is a plausible candidate compound for a kagome metal that is expected to exhibit anomalous phenomena such as flat-band ferromagnetism. Resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity are measured on single crystals of YCr6Ge6, and band structure calculations are performed to investigate the electronic structure. Curie-Weiss-like behavior in magnetic susceptibility, T2 dependence in resistivity, and a Sommerfeld coefficient doubly enhanced from a calculated value indicate a moderately strong electron correlation. Interestingly…
Spin ices are exotic phases of matter characterized by frustrated spins obeying local ice rules, in analogy with the electric dipoles in water ice. In two dimensions, one can similarly define ice rules for in-plane Ising-like spins arranged on a kagome lattice. These ice rules require each triangle plaquette to have a single monopole, and can lead to various unique orders and excitations. Using experimental and theoretical approaches including magnetometry, thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we establish HoAgGe as a crystalline (i.e. non-artificial) sys…
We present the crystal structures and magnetic properties of RE3Sb3Mg2O14 (La3Sb3Mg2O14, Pr3Sb3Mg2O14, Sm3Sb3Mg2O14, Eu3Sb3Mg2O14, Tb3Sb3Mg2O14, and Ho3Sb3Mg2O14), a family of novel materials based on a perfect geometry 2D rare earth Kagome lattice. Structure refinements were performed by the Rietveld method using X-ray diffraction data, indicating that the layered compounds are fully structurally ordered. The compounds crystallize in a rhombohedral supercell of the cubic pyrochlore structure, in the space group R-3m. As indicated by magnetic susceptibility measurements, they exhibit predomina…
Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) [Cu(1,3-bdc)] contains structurally perfect kagomé planes formed by Cu$^{2+}$ ions without the presence of diamagnetic defects. This organometallic compound should have served as a precious platform to explore quantum frustrated magnetism, yet the experimental results so far are mysterious, leading to questions such as "Is Cu(1,3-bdc) just a trivial weak ferromagnet?". Using the the density functional theory, we have systematically studied the electronic and magnetic properties of Cu(1,3-bdc), putting forth a theoretical basis to clarify this novel material. We pre…
Herbertsmithite and Zn-doped barlowite are two compounds for experimental realization of twodimensional gapped kagome spin liquid. Theoretically, it has been proposed that charge doping a quantum spin liquid gives rise to exotic metallic states, such as high-temperature superconductivity. However, one recent experiment about herbertsmithite with successful Li-doping shows surprisingly the insulating state even under the heavy doped scenario, which can hardly be explained by many-body physics. Using first-principles calculation, we performed a comprehensive study about the Li intercalated dopin…
Kagome lattice composed of transition-metal ions provides a great opportunity to explore the intertwining between geometry, electronic orders and band topology. The discovery of multiple competing orders that connect intimately with the underlying topological band structure in nonmagnetic kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) further pushes this topic to the quantum frontier. Here we report the discovery and characterization of a new class of vanadium-based compounds with kagome bilayers, namely $A$V$_6$Sb$_6$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) and V$_6$Sb$_4$, which, together with $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, com…
Using inelastic x-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U $5f$ electrons in UM$_2$Si$_2$ (M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U $5f^2$ configuration with the $Γ_1^{(1)}$ and $Γ_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5$f^3$ configuration, however, varies considerably across the UM$_2$Si$_2$ series, indicating an increase of U5$f$ itineracy in going from M=Pd to Ni to Ru, an…
We report the structure and physical properties of two newly-discovered compounds AV8Sb12 and AV6Sb6 (A = Cs, Rb), which have C2 (space group: Cmmm) and C3 (space group: R-3m) symmetry, respectively. The basic V-kagome unit is present in both compounds, but stacking differently. A V2Sb2 layer is sandwiched between two V3Sb5 layers in AV8Sb12, altering the V-kagome lattice and lowering the symmetry of kagome layer from hexagonal to orthorhombic. In AV6Sb6, the building block is a more complex slab made up of two half-V3Sb5 layers that are intercalated by Cs cations along the c-axis. Transport p…
Spin-1 antiferromagnets are abundant in nature, but few theories or results exist to understand their general properties and behavior, particularly in situations when geometric frustration is present. Here we study the $S=1$ Kagome compound Na$_2$Ti$_3$Cl$_8$ using a combination of Density Functional Theory, Exact Diagonalization, and Density Matrix Renormalization Group methods to achieve a first principles supported explanation of exotic magnetic phases in this compound. We find that the effective magnetic Hamiltonian includes essential non-Heisenberg terms that do not stem from spin-orbit c…
At zero magnetic field, a series of five phase transitions occur in Co3V2O8. The Neel temperature, TN=11.4 K, is followed by four additional phase changes at T1=8.9 K, T2=7.0 K, T3=6.9 K, and T4=6.2 K. The different phases are distinguished by the commensurability of the b-component of its spin density wave vector. We investigate the stability of these various phases under magnetic fields through dielectric constant and magnetic susceptibility anomalies. The field-temperature phase diagram of Co3V2O8 is completely resolved. The complexity of the phase diagram results from the competition of di…
Using muon spin resonance we examine the organometallic hybrid compound Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) [Cu(1,3-bdc)], which has structurally perfect spin 1/2 copper kagome planes separated by pure organic linkers. This compound has antiferromagnetic interactions with Curie-Weiss temperature of -33 K. We found slowing down of spin fluctuations starting at T=1.8 K, and that the state at T->0 is quasi-static with no long-range order and extremely slow spin fluctuations at a rate of 3.6 1/usec. This indicates that Cu(1,3-bdc) behaves as expected from a kagome magnet and could serve as a model kagome…
Single crystals of the single Kagome layer compound FeSn are investigated using x-ray and neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, Hall, Seebeck, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity measurements and density functional theory (DFT). FeSn is a planar antiferromagnet below TN = 365 K and exhibits ferromagnetic magnetic order within each Kagome layer. The in-plane magnetic susceptibility is sensitive to synthesis conditions. Resistivity, Hall and Seebeck results indicate multiple bands near the Fermi energy. The resistivity of FeSn is about 3 t…
We report magnetic behavior of two intermetallics-based kagome lattices, Tb3Ru4Al12 and Er3Ru4Al12, crystallizing in the Gd3Ru4Al12-type hexagonal crystal structure, by measurements in the range 1.8-300 K with bulk experimental techniques (ac and dc magnetization, heat-capacity and magnetoresistance). The main finding is that the Tb compound, known to order antiferromagnetically below (T_N=) 22 K, shows glassy characteristics at lower temperatures (<15K), thus characterizing this compound as a re-entrant spin-glass. The data reveal that glassy phase is quite complex and is of a cluster type. S…
Two kagome compounds, volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2-2H2O and herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, are compared in order to derive information about the intrinsic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet. Volborthite shows a broad maximum at T ~ J / 4 and the approach at T = 0 to a large finite value of the bulk magnetic susceptibility chi_bulk as well as the local susceptibility chi_local from NMR measurements. These must be intrinsic properties for the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, as similar behavior has also been reported in chi_local for herbertsmithite [Olariu A et al. 2008 Phys. Rev. Le…
We report the determination of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, the dominant magnetic anisotropy term in the \kagome spin-1/2 compound {\herbert}. Based on the analysis of the high-temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra, we find its main component $|D_z|=15(1)$ K to be perpendicular to the \kagome planes. Through the temperature dependent ESR line-width we observe a building up of nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations below $\sim$150 K.
We investigate the lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ by a combination of infrared spectroscopy measurements and ab initio density functional theory calculations, and provide an unambiguous assignment of infrared-active lattice vibrations involving in-plane and out-of-plane atom displacements in the kagome layers. Upon cooling, non-thermal red-shifts and broadening appear specifically for modes that deform the kagome layer or affect the Cu-O-Cu bond angles, thus creating pronounced modifications of the antiferromagnetic exchange c…
The magnetic behavior of the compound, Gd3Ru4Al12, which has been reported to crystallize in a hexagonal structure about two decades ago, had not been investigated in the past literature despite interesting structural features (that is, magnetic layers and triangles as well as Kagome-lattice features favouring frustrated magnetism) characterizing this compound. We report here the results of magnetization, heat-capacity, and magnetoresistance studies in the temperature (T) range 1.8-300 K. The results establish that there is a long-range magnetic order of an antiferromagnetic type below (TN= ) …

An indispensable step to understand collective magnetic phenomena in rare-earth compounds is the determination of spatially-anisotropic single-ion properties resulting from spin-orbit coupling and crystal field (CF). The CF Hamiltonian has a discrete energy spectrum -- accessible to spectroscopic probes such as neutron scattering -- controlled by a number of independent parameters reflecting the point-symmetry of the magnetic sites. Determining these parameters in low-symmetry systems is often challenging. Here, we describe a general method to analyze CF excitation spectra using adjustable eff…
The mechanism to realize the peculiar flat bands generally existing in RCo5 (R=rare earth) compounds is clarified by analyzing the first-principles band structures and the tight-binding model. These flat bands are constructed from the localized eigenstates, the existence of which is guaranteed by the partial cancelation between the intersite hopping amplitudes among the Co-3d states at the Kagome sites and those between the Kagome and honeycomb sites. Their relative positions to other bands can be controlled by varying the lattice parameters keeping their dispersion almost flat, which suggests…
In the vanadium oxyfluoride compound (NH$_4$)$_2$[C$_7$H$_{14}$N][V$_7$O$_6$F$_{18}$] (DQVOF), the V$^{4+}$ (3d$^1$, $S=1/2$) ions realize a unique, highly frustrated breathing kagome lattice composed of alternately-sized, corner-sharing equilateral triangles. Here we present an $^{17}$O NMR study of DQVOF, which isolates the local susceptibility of the breathing kagome network. By a fit to series expansion we extract the ratio of the interactions within the breathing kagome plane, $J_\triangledown / J_\vartriangle = 0.55(4)$, and the mean antiferromagnetic interaction $\bar{J}=60(7)$~K. Spin …
The electronic structure of the kagome staircase compounds, Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, has been investigated using soft x-ray absorption, soft x-ray emission, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Comparison between the two compounds, and with first principles band structure calculations and crystal-field multiplet models, provide unique insight into the electronic structure of the two materials. Whereas the location of the narrow (Ni,Co) d bands is predicted to be close to EF, we experimentally find they lie deeper in the occupied O 2p and unoccupied V 3d manifolds, and determine their en…
The magnetic properties of Co3V2O8 have been studied by single-crystal neutron-diffraction. In zero magnetic field, the observed broadening of the magnetic Bragg peaks suggests the presence of disorder both in the low-temperature ferromagnetic and in the higher-temperature antiferromagnetic state. The field dependence of the intensity and position of the magnetic reflections in Co3V2O8 reveals a complex sequence of phase transitions in this Kagome staircase compound. For H//a, a commensurate-incommensurate-commensurate transition is found in a field of 0.072 T in the antiferromagnetic phase at…
We present powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction and bulk measurements of the Kagome-staircase compound Ni3V2O8 (NVO) in fields up to 8.5T applied along the c-direction. (The Kagome plane is the a-c plane.) This system contains two types of Ni ions, which we call "spine" and "cross-tie". Our neutron measurements can be described with the paramagnetic space group Cmca for T < 15K and each observed magnetically ordered phase is characterized by the appropriate irreducible representation(s). Our zero-field measurements show that at T_PH=9.1K NVO undergoes a transition to an incommensurate…
We report on the magnetic properties of four isomorphous compounds of a family of quinternary oxalates down to 60 mK. In all these materials, the magnetic FeII ions with a strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy form a distorted kagome lattice, topologically equivalent to a perfect kagome one if nearest-neighbor interactions only are considered. All the compounds order at low temperature in an antiferromagnetic arrangement with magnetic moments at 120°. A remarkable magnetic behavior emerges below the Néel temperature in three compounds (with inter-kagome-layer Zr, Sn, Fe but not with Al): the s…
We report the crystal field levels of several newly-discovered rare-earth kagome compounds: $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$, $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Zn_2O_{14}}$, and $\rm{Pr_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$. We determine the CEF Hamiltonian by fitting to neutron scattering data using a point-charge Hamiltonian as an intermediate fitting step. The fitted Hamiltonians accurately reproduce bulk susceptibility measurements, and the results indicate easy-axis ground state doublets for $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$ and $\rm{Nd_3Sb_3Zn_2O_{14}}$, and a singlet ground state for $\rm{Pr_3Sb_3Mg_2O_{14}}$. These results provide the groun…
We report the study of high quality samples of the frustrated S = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite, Cu3Ba(VO5H)2. Neutron powder diffraction measurements evidence the high quality of the kagome lattice and show no sign of a transition to long-range order. A kink in the susceptibility below T = 9 K is matched to a reduction in paramagnetic-like correlations in the diffraction data and a slowing of the spin dynamics observed by MuSR. Our results point to an exotic quantum state below 9 K with coexistance of both dynamical and small frozen moments \sim 0.1 \muB. We propose that Dzyaloshinsk…
We present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($μ^{+}$SR) measurements on the kagome staircase compounds Ni$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and Co$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$. The magnetic behavior of these materials may be described in terms of two inequivalent magnetic ion sites, known as spine sites and cross-tie sites. Our $μ^{+}$SR results allow us to probe each of these sites individually, revealing the distribution of the local magnetic fields near these positions. We are able not only to confirm the magnetic structures of the various phases proposed on the basis of bulk measurements but also to give an i…
Optical conductivity measurements are combined with density functional theory calculations in order to understand the electrodynamic response of the frustrated Mott insulators Herbertsmithite $\mathrm{ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}}$ and the closely-related kagome-lattice compound $\mathrm{Y_{3}Cu_{9}(OH)_{19}Cl_{8}}$. We identify these materials as charge-transfer rather than Mott-Hubbard insulators, similar to the high-$T_c$ cuprate parent compounds. The band edge is at 3.3 and 3.6 eV, respectively, establishing the insulating nature of these compounds. Inside the gap, we observe dipole-forbidden lo…
We present a systematic study of the structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of a new branch of intermetalllic compounds, $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$ = Tb - Tm) by using X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical transport, and heat-capacity measurements. These compounds feature a combination of a non-magnetic vanadium kagome sublattice and a magnetic rare-earth triangular sublattice that supports various spin anisotropies based on different $R$ ions. We find magnetic orders for the $R$ = Tb, Dy, and Ho compounds at 4.4, 3, 2.5 K, respectively, while no ordering is de…
Mn3V2O8 is a magnetic system in which S = 5/2 Mn2+ is found in the kagome staircase lattice. Here we report the magnetic phase diagram for temperatures above 2 K and applied magnetic fields below 9 T, characterized by measurements of the magnetization and specific heat with field along the three unique lattice directions. At low applied magnetic fields, the system first orders magnetically below Tm1 ~ 21 K, and then shows a second magnetic phase transition at Tm2 ~ 15 K. In addition, a phase transition that is apparent in specific heat but not seen in magnetization is found for all three appli…
We report the specific heat and entropy of single crystals of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 at temperatures down to 0.35 K. We apply magnetic fields along the four characteristic directions: [100], [110], [111] and [112]. Because of Ising anisotropy, we observe anisotropic release of the residual zero-point entropy, attributable to the difference in frustration dimensionality. In the high magnetic field along these four directions, the residual entropy is almost fully released and the activation entropy reaches Rln2. However, in the intermediate field region, the entropy in fields along the […
For the spin-3/2 kagome staircase system Co3V2O8, magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the fields along three principal directions up to 5 T, using results of various macroscopic measurements on single crystal samples and also using neutron diffraction data taken on both powder and single crystal samples under H along c. In zero magnetic field, the system exhibits three transitions at temperatures Tc1~11.2 K, Tc2~8.8 K and Tc3~ (6.0-7.0) K. The single crystal data present clear evidence for the noncollinear nature of the magnetic structures in all magneti…
A new organically-templated vanadium (III) fluoride, (NH4)2(C2H8N)[V3F12], has been prepared using an ionothermal approach. This compound has a unique layered structure featuring distorted S = 1 kagome planes separated by the cationic species. The compound exhibits magnetic frustration, with a canted antiferromagnetic ground state. On further cooling within the ground state a pronounced change in magnetisation kinetics is observed.
We prepared a powder sample of edwardsite Cd2Cu3(SO4)2(OH)6 4H2O, which is a new candidate compound for the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, and studied its magnetic properties by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. Edwardsite has a deformed kagome lattice with an average antiferromagnetic interaction of 51 K between nearby spins and shows an antiferromagnetic order accompanied by a small ferromagnetic moment below 4.3 K. The weak ferromagnetism is likely due to spin canting caused by sizable Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions, which may stabilize the long-range magnetic ord…
The magnetization of two spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, volborthite and vesignieite, has been measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A magnetization plateau is observed for each compound near the highest magnetic field. Magnetizations at saturation are approximately equal to 0.40Ms for both compounds, where Ms is the fully saturated magnetization, irrespective of a difference in the distortion of the kagome lattice between the two compounds. It should be noted that these values of magnetizations are significantly larger than Ms/3 predicted theoretically for the one-third magnetizati…
Quantum interference on the kagome lattice generates electronic bands with narrow bandwidth, called flat bands. Crystal structures incorporating this lattice can host strong electron correlations with non-standard ingredients, but only if these bands lie at the Fermi level. In the six compounds with the CoSn structure type (FeGe, FeSn, CoSn, NiIn, RhPb, and PtTl) the transition metals form a kagome lattice. The two iron variants are robust antiferromagnets so we focus on the latter four and investigate their thermodynamic and transport properties. We consider these results and calculated band …
Materials hosting kagome lattices have drawn interest for the diverse magnetic and electronic states generated by geometric frustration. In the $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ compounds ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs), stacked vanadium kagome layers give rise to unusual charge density waves (CDW) and superconductivity. Here we report single-crystal growth and characterization of ScV$_6$Sn$_6$, a hexagonal HfFe$_6$Ge$_6$-type compound that shares this structural motif. We identify a first-order phase transition at 92 K. Single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction reveal a charge density wave modulation of the atomic lattice…
Using $^{63,65}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in magnetic fields up to 30 T we study the microscopic properties of the 12-site valence-bond-solid ground state in the "pinwheel" kagome compound Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. We find that the ground state is characterized by a strong transverse staggered spin polarization whose temperature and field dependence points to a mixing of the singlet and triplet states. This is further corroborated by the field dependence of the gap $Δ(H)$, which has a level anticrossing with a large minimum gap value of $\approx Δ(0)/2$, with no evidence of a phase tra…

We have successfully synthesized S = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnets MCu3(OH)6Cl2 (M = Ni and Co) by hydrothermal method with rotating pressure vessel. Structural characterization shows that both compounds have the similar crystal structure as ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 with R-3m symmetry. Similar to ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, the compounds show no obvious hysteresis at 2 K. A spin glass transition is found in both NiCu3(OH)6Cl2 and CoCu3(OH)6Cl2 at low temperatures (6.0 and 3.5 K respectively) by AC susceptibility measurements. It indicates no long-range magnetic order and a strong spin frustration. The substitution of Z…
$\mathrm{Mn}_3\mathrm{X}$ compounds in which the magnetic $\mathrm{Mn}$ atoms form AB-stacked kagome lattices have received a tremendous amount of attention since the observation of the anomalous Hall effect in $\mathrm{Mn}_3\mathrm{Ge}$ and $\mathrm{Mn}_3\mathrm{Sn}$. Although the magnetic ground state has been known for some time to be an inverse triangular structure with an induced in-plane magnetic moment, there have been several controversies about the minimal magnetic Hamiltonian. We present a general symmetry-based model for these compounds that includes a previously unreported interpla…
We theoretically investigate magnetic properties in the low-temperature phase with the formation of eight-site clusters, octamers, in the spinel compound CuIr$_2$S$_4$. The octamer state was considered to be a spin-singlet state induced by a Peieirls instability through the strong anisotropy of $d$ orbitals, the so-called orbital Peierls state. We reexamine this picture by taking into account the spin-orbit coupling which was ignored in the previous study. We derive a low-energy effective model between $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ quasispins on Ir$^{4+}$ cations in an octamer from the multiorbital Hubbar…
We present a microscopic study of a doped quantum spin liquid candidate, the hyperkagome Na$_3$Ir$_3$O$_8$ compound by using $^{23}$Na NMR. We determine the intrinsic behavior of the uniform \textbf{q} $ = 0$ susceptibility via shift measurements and the dynamical response by probing the spin-lattice relaxation rate. Throughout the studied temperature range, the susceptibility is consistent with a semimetal behavior, though with electronic bands substantially modified by correlations. Remarkably, the antiferromagnetic fluctuations present in the insulating parent compound Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ sur…
We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Our experimental results provide firm evidence for spin fractionalization in a topologicall…
