We investigated theoretically electronic and magnetic properties of the perovskite material SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ with $δ\leq 0.15$ using a projector-augmented plane-wave method and a Green's function method. This material is known from various experiments to be ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature of 260$\,$K to 305$\,$K and a magnetic moment of 1.5${\,μ_\text{B}}$ to 3.0${\,μ_\text{B}}$. Applying the magnetic force theorem as it is formulated within Green's function method, we calculated for SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ the magnetic exchange parameters and estimated the Curie temperature. Including correlation effects by an effective $U$ parameter within the GGA$+U$ approach and verifying this by hybrid functional calculations, we obtained the Curie temperatures in dependence of the oxygen deficiency close to the experimental values.
Supercapacitors have recently gained popularity as possible energy storage systems due to their high cycling ability and increased power density. However, one of the major drawbacks of supercapacitors is that they have a low energy density, which makes them less effective than batteries. Herein, we explore different methods of increasing the supercapacitor performance of the perovskite SrCoO3. We carry out first-principles calculations to systematically study how SrCoO3/graphene interface, oxygen vacancies, and doping improve the performance of strontium cobaltite as an anion-intercalation-typ…
Oxygen stoichiometry is one of the most important elements in determining the physical properties of transition metal oxides (TMOs). A small fractional change in the oxygen content, resulting in the variation of valence state of the transition metal, can drastically modify the materials functionalities. In particular, TMOs with mixed valences have attracted attention for many energy applications. Previous studies also showed that the ability to control the number of d-band electron populations and detailed spin configurations is critical for improved catalytic performance of TMOs. In this cont…
Fast, reversible redox reactions in solids at low temperatures without thermomechanical degradation are a promising strategy for enhancing the overall performance and lifetime of many energy materials and devices. However, the robust nature of the cation's oxidation state and the high thermodynamic barrier have hindered the realization of fast catalysis and bulk diffusion at low temperatures. Here, we report a significant lowering of the redox temperature by epitaxial stabilization of strontium cobaltites (SrCoOx) grown directly as one of two distinct crystalline phases, either the perovskite …
To design and discover new materials for next-generation energy materials such as solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), a fundamental understanding of their ionic properties and behaviors is essential. The potential applicability of a material for SOFCs is critically determined by the activation energy barrier of oxygen along various diffusion pathways. In this work, we investigate interstitial-oxygen (Oi) diffusion in brownmillerite oxide SrCoO2.5, employing a first-principles approach. Our calculations indicate highly anisotropic ionic diffusion pathways, which result from its anisotropic crystal …
Two magnetic phase transitions have been noted for SrCoO$_{3-y}$ for near-stoichiometric oxygen concentrations (small y). Using muon spin rotation and neutron scattering experiments, we have established that the two transitions represent separate, spatially distinct magnetic phases that coexist in a two-phase equilibrium mixture. The two phases most likely represent areas of the sample with different effective valence charge density. Further, the phases exist over regions with a length scale intermediate between nanoscale charge inhomogeneity and systems such as manganites or super-oxygenated …
Transition-metal perovskite oxides constitute a series of functional material systems for electronics, catalysis and energy-conversion processes, in which oxygen migration and evolution play a key role. However, the stable metal-oxygen (M-O) bond forms large energy barrier inhibiting ion diffusion. Therefore, seeking efficient and facile approaches to accelerate oxygen kinetics has become a significant issue. Here, the interaction (interfacial charge transfer and cooperative bonding) between noble metal (Pt, Ag) and perovskites oxide (SrCoO3-delta) is employed to weaken (M-O) bond and decrease…
It has been well established that both in bulk at ambient pressure and for films under modest strains, cubic SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ ($δ< 0.2$) is a ferromagnetic metal. Recent theoretical work, however, indicates that a magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetic structure could occur under large strain accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. We have observed a strain-induced ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition in SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ films grown on DyScO$_3$ substrates, which provide a large tensile epitaxial strain, as compared to ferromagnetic films under lower tensile strain on …
By using first-principles methods based on density functional theory we revisited the zero-temperature phase diagram of stoichiometric SrCoO3, a ferromagnetic metallic perovskite that undergoes significant structural, electronic, and magnetic changes as its content of oxygen is decreased. We considered both bulk and epitaxial thin film geometries. In the bulk case, we found that a tetragonal P4/mbm phase with moderate Jahn-Teller distortions and c/a ratio of ~1/sqrt{2} is consistently predicted to have a lower energy than the thus far assumed ground-state cubic Pm-3m phase. In thin films, we f…
Epitaxial strain provides important pathways to control the magnetic and electronic states in transition metal oxides. However, the large strain is usually accompanied by a strong reduction of the oxygen vacancy formation energy, which hinders the direct manipulation of their intrinsic properties. Here using a post-deposition ozone annealing method, we obtained a series of oxygen stoichiometric SrCoO3 thin films with the tensile strain up to 3.0%. We observed a robust ferromagnetic ground state in all strained thin films, while interestingly the tensile strain triggers a distinct metal to insu…
We report the optical, electrical transport, and magnetotransport properties of high quality oxygen deficient SrTiO3 (STO) single crystal film fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and reduced in the vacuum chamber. The oxygen vacancy distribution in the thin film is expected to be uniform. By comparing the electrical properties with oxygen deficient bulk STO, it was found that the oxygen vacancies in bulk STO is far from uniform over the whole material. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) observed in the oxygen deficient STO film was found to be induced by the carrier freeze-out effect. The …
The lattice relaxation in oxygen-deficient Ta2O5 is investigated using first-principles calculations. The presence of a charge-neutral oxygen vacancy can result in a long-ranged lattice relaxation which extends beyond 18 Å from the vacancy site. The lattice relaxation has significant effects on the vacancy formation energy as well as the electronic structures. The long-ranged behavior of the lattice relaxation is explained in terms of the Hellmann-Feynman forces and the potential energy surface related to the variation of Ta-O bond lengths.
The transport properties of domain walls in oxygen deficient multiferroic YMnO3 single crystals have been probed using conductive atomic force microscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy. Domain walls exhibit significantly enhanced conductance after being poled in electric fields, possibly induced by oxygen vacancy ordering at domain walls. The electronic conduction can be understood by the Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim tunnelling mechanisms. Our results show that the domain wall conductance can be modulated through band structure engineering by manipulating ordered oxygen vacancies …
First-principles calculations to study the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk, oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_3$ (STO) under different doping conditions and densities have been conducted. The appearance of magnetism in oxygen-deficient STO is not determined solely by the presence of a single oxygen vacancy but by the density of free carriers and the relative proximity of the vacant sites. We find that while an isolated vacancy behaves as a non-magnetic double donor, manipulation of the doping conditions allows the stability of a single donor state, with emergent local moments coupled ferromag…
The oxygen stoichiometry has a large influence on the physical and chemical properties of complex oxides. Most of the functionality in e.g. catalysis and electrochemistry depends in particular on control of the oxygen stoichiometry. In order to understand the fundamental properties of intrinsic surfaces of oxygen-deficient complex oxides, we report on in situ temperature dependent scanning tunnelling spectroscopy experiments on pristine oxygen deficient, epitaxial manganite films. Although these films are insulating in subsequent ex situ in-plane electronic transport experiments at all tempera…
Hydrostatic pressure and oxygen vacancies usually have deleterious effects on ferroelectric materials because both tend to reduce their polarization. In this work we use first-principles calculations to study an important class of ferroelectric materials - LiNbO$_3$-type ferroelectrics (LiNbO$_3$ as the prototype), and find that in oxygen-deficient LiNbO$_{3-δ}$, hydrostatic pressure induces an unexpected metal-insulator transition between 8 and 9 GPa. Our calculations also find that strong polar displacements persist in both metallic and insulating oxygen-deficient LiNbO$_{3-δ}$ and the size …
Electron localization and polaron mobility in oxygen deficient as well as Li doped monoclinic tungsten trioxide have been studied. We show that small polarons formed in the presence of oxygen vacancy prefer the bipolaronic $W^{5+}- W^{5+}$ configuration whereas the $W^{6+}- W^{4+}$ configuration is found to be metastable. Our calculations suggest that bipolarons are tightly bound by the vacancy and therefore largely immobile. On the contrary, polarons formed as a result of Li intercalation can be mobile, the activation energy for polaron jumping in this case varies between 98 and 124 meV depen…
On highly oxygen deficient thin films of hafnium oxide (hafnia, HfO$_{2-x}$) contaminated with adsorbates of carbon oxides, the formation of hafnium carbide (HfC$_x$) at the surface during vacuum annealing at temperatures as low as 600 °C is reported. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy the evolution of the HfC$_x$ surface layer related to a transformation from insulating into metallic state is monitored in situ. In contrast, for fully stoichiometric HfO$_2$ thin films prepared and measured under identical conditions, the formation of HfC$_x$ was not detectable suggesting that the enhanced …
Oxygen vacancies in transition metal oxides facilitate catalysis critical for energy storage and generation. However, it has proven elusive to promote vacancies at the lower temperatures required for operation in devices such as metal-air batteries and portable fuel cells. Here, we use thin films of the perovskite-based strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) to show that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool towards manipulating the oxygen content under conditions consistent with the oxygen evolution reaction, yielding increasingly oxygen deficient states in an environment where the cobaltite would normal…
Defects in semiconductors can exhibit multiple charge states, which can be used for charge storage applications. Here we consider such charge storage in a series of oxygen deficient phases of TiO$_2$, known as Magnéli phases. These Ti$_n$O$_{2n-1}$ Magnéli phases present well-defined crystalline structures, i. e., their deviation from stoichiometry is accommodated by changes in space group as opposed to point defects. We show that these phases exhibit intermediate bands with the same electronic quadruple donor transitions akin to interstitial Ti defect levels in TiO$_2$-rutile. Thus, the Magné…
The ability to manipulate oxygen anion defects rather than metal cations in complex oxides can facilitate creating new functionalities critical for emerging energy and device technologies. However, the difficulty in activating oxygen at reduced temperatures hinders the deliberate control of important defects, oxygen vacancies. Here, strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) is used to demonstrate that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool for manipulating the oxygen vacancy concentration even under highly oxidizing environments and at annealing temperatures as low as 300 C. By applying a small biaxial tensil…
Catalysis is indispensable to chemical processes and relevant to many aspects of modern life. Owing to the intriguing electronic structures and good ionic properties, multivalent transition metal oxides have attracted attention as key catalysts for various energy and environmental applications. Here, we demonstrate that brownmillerite strontium cobaltite (SrCoO2.5) can be a good cathode material for sold oxide fuel cells and rechargeable batteries due to the open oxygen frameworks. When the orientation of oxygen vacancy channels (OVCs) is properly controlled, one can drastically increase the s…
We report on Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopic studies on oxygen vacancy induced structural disorder in Gd2Ti2O7-d single crystals grown by optical floating zone technique under argon atmosphere. The oxygen vacancies in Gd2Ti2O7-d wafers decrease with thermal annealing in an air atmosphere. The full width at half maximum of X-ray diffraction rocking curve decreases from 245 to 157 arc-second and the optical transmittance increases from 23 to 87 % (at 1000 nm) upon post growth thermal annealing. Raman spectroscopic studies reveal a monotonic increase in intensity of O-Gd-O (Eg) and Ti-O…
We present theoretical evidence for local magnetic moments on Ti3+ ions in oxygen-deficient anatase and rutile TiO2 observed in a recent experiment [S. Zhou, et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 113201 (2009)]. Results of our first-principles GGA+U calculations reveal that an oxygen vacancy converts two Ti4+ ions to two Ti3+ ions in anatase phase, which results in a local magnetic moment of 1.0 $μ_B$ per Ti3+. The two Ti3+ ions, however, form a stable antiferromagnetic state, and similar antiferromagnetism is also observed in oxygen-deficient rutile phase TiO2. The calculated results are in good agreement…
Semiconducting oxides with reducible cations are ideal platforms for various functional applications in nanoelectronics and catalysts. Here we report an ultrathin monolayer alpha-MoO3 where tunable electronic properties and different gas adsorbing behaviors upon introducing the oxygen vacancies (VO). The unique property of alpha-MoO3 is that it contains three different types of oxygen atoms occupying three Wyckoff sites that are absent in other low-dimensional oxides and provides rich electronic hybridized states. The presence of VO triggers intermediate state in the gap at ~0.59 eV below the …
Complex oxide functionality, such as ferroelectricity, magnetism or superconductivity is often achieved in epitaxial thin-film geometries. Oxygen vacancies tend to be the dominant type of defect in these materials but a fundamental understanding of their stability and electronic structure has so far mostly been established in the bulk or strained bulk, neglecting interfaces and surfaces present in a thin-film geometry. We investigate here, via density functional theory calculations, oxygen vacancies in the model system of a SrMnO$_3$ (SMO) thin film grown on a SrTiO$_3$ (STO) (001) substrate. …
We investigated the preferred electron dopants at the oxygen sites of 1111-type SmFeAsO by changing the atmospheres around the precursor with the composition of Sm:Fe:As:O = 1:1:1:1-x in high-pressure synthesis. Under H2O and H2 atmospheres, hydrogens derived from H2O or H2 molecules were introduced into the oxygen sites as a hydride ion, and SmFeAsO1-xHx was obtained. However, when the H2O and H2 sources were removed from the synthetic process, nearly stoichiometric SmFeAsO was obtained and the maximum amount of oxygen vacancies introduced remained x = 0.05(4). Density functional theory calcu…
The functional properties of transition metal perovskite oxides are known to result from a complex interplay of magnetism, polarization, strain, and stoichiometry. Here, we show that for materials with a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion, such as LaMnO$_3$ (LMO), the orbital order can also couple to the defect chemistry and induce novel material properties. At low temperatures, LMO exhibits a strong Jahn-Teller distortion that splits the $e_g$ orbitals of the high-spin Mn$^{3+}$ ions and leads to alternating long, short, and intermediate Mn--O bonds. Our DFT+$U$ calculations show that, as a r…
The oxygen-deficient perovskite cobaltite SrCo1-xNbxO3-d was synthesized by direct solid-state reaction and its magnetotransport properties were investigated. This cobaltite exhibits an unusual ferromagnetic behavior with a transition temperature Tm = 130-150 K and a spin glass like behavior below Tm. Importantly, this phase reaches a large magnetoresistance (MR) value, MR = -(rH - r0) / r0 = 30% at 5 K in 7 T. The large MR effect is believed to be related to the disordered magnetic state induced by the Nb-for-Co substitution.
Enhanced magnetic and optical properties of oxygen deficient TiO$_{2-δ}$ nanoparticles synthesized by environment-friendly green route using whole plant extract of Phyllanthus niruri
Strontium titanate (SrTiO$_3$) is a foundational material in the emerging field of complex oxide electronics. While its electronic and optical properties have been studied for decades, SrTiO$_3$ has recently become a renewed materials research focus catalyzed in part by the discovery of magnetism and superconductivity at interfaces between SrTiO$_3$ and other oxides. The formation and distribution of oxygen vacancies may play an essential but as-yet-incompletely understood role in these effects. Moreover, recent signatures of magnetization in gated SrTiO$_3$ have further galvanized interest in…
The development of new electrochromic materials and devices, like smart windows, has an enormous impact on the energy efficiency of modern society. One of the crucial materials in this technology is nickel-oxide. Ni-deficient NiO shows anodic electrochromism whose mechanism is still under debate. Using DFT+U calculations, we show that Ni vacancy generation results in the formation of hole polarons localised at the two oxygens next to the vacancy. Upon Li insertion or injection of an extra electron into Ni-deficient NiO, one hole gets filled, and the hole bipolaron is converted into a hole pola…
Bodies in relative motion separated by a gap of a few nanometers can experience a tiny friction force. This non-contact dissipation can have various origins and can be successfully measured by a sensitive pendulum atomic force microscope tip oscillating laterally above the surface. Here, we report on the observation of dissipation peaks at selected voltage-dependent tip-surface distances for oxygen-deficient strontium titanate (SrTiO_3) surface at low temperatures (T = 5K). The observed dissipation peaks are attributed to tip-induced charge and spin state transitions in quantum-dot-like entiti…
We report a large persistent photoconductivity (PPC) in oxygen reduced PLD grown YBa2Cu3O7-δ/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3-y (YBCO/LCMO) superlattices scaling with the oxygen deficiency and being similar to that observed in single layer YBa2Cu3O7-δ films. These results contradict previous observations where in sputtered bilayer samples only a transient photoconductivity (TPC) was found. We argue that the PPC effect in superlattices is caused by the PPC effect due to the YBa2Cu3O7-x layers with limited charge transfer to La2/3Ca1/3MnO3-y. The discrepancy arises from the different permeability of charges acros…
Correlated band theory is employed to investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of different arrangements of oxygen di- and tri-vacancy clusters in SrTiO$_3$. Hole and electron doping of oxygen deficient SrTiO$_3$ yields various degrees of magnetization as a result of the interaction between localized magnetic moments at the defected sites. Different kinds of Ti atomic orbital hybridization are described as a function of the doping level and defect geometry. We find that magnetism in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ is sensitive to the arrangement of neighbouring vacancy sites, charge carrier density, a…
We have studied how the magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO sputtered thin films vary as a function of thickness. The magnetic moment, measured by polarized neutron reflectometry, and the Curie temperature are found to decrease with reducing thickness. Our results indicate that the reduced number of nearest neighbors, band bending and the partial depopulation of the electronic states that carry the spins associated with the 4f orbitals of Eu are all contributing factors in the surface-induced change of the magnetic properties of EuO$_{1-x}$.
We report on the observation of metallic behavior in thin films of oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_3$ - down to 9 unit cells - when coherently strained on (001) SrTiO$_3$ or DyScO$_3$-buffered (001) SrTiO$_3$ substrates. These films have carrier concentrations of up to 2$\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$ and mobilities of up to 19,000 cm$^2$/V-s at 2 K. There exists a non-conducting layer in our SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ films that is larger in films with lower carrier concentrations. This non-conducting layer can be attributed to a surface depletion layer due to a Fermi level pinning potential. The depletion width, trans…
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been established as a versatile route for the large-scale synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides, such as tungsten disulfide (WS2). Yet, the role of the precursor composition on the efficiency of the CVD process remains largely unknown and yet to be explored. Here, we employ Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) in a two-stage process to tune the oxygen content in tungsten oxide (WO3-x) precursors and demonstrate that the presence of oxygen vacancies in the precursor films leads to a more facile conversion from WO3-x to WS2. Using a joint study based on ab in…
We provide a first-principles description of the crystalline and oxygen-deficient Ta2O5 using refined computational methods and models. By performing calculations on a number of candidate structures, we determined the low-temperature phase and several stable oxygen vacancy configurations, which are notably different from the previous results. The most stable charge-neutral vacancy site induces a shallow level near the bottom of conduction band. Stability of different charge states is studied. Based on the results, we discuss the implications of the level structures on experiments, including th…
We have fabricated oxygen deficient polycrystalline ZnO films by the rf sputtering deposition method. To systematically investigate the charge transport mechanisms in these samples, the electrical resistivities have been measured over a wide range of temperature from 300 K down to liquid-helium temperatures. We found that below about 100 K, the variable-range-hopping (VRH) conduction processes govern the charge transport properties. In particular, the Mott VRH conduction process dominates at higher temperatures, while crossing over to the Efros-Shklovskii (ES) VRH conduction process at lower t…
Magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy studies were performed on oxygen- deficient high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO0.85 with TC=52.4 K. The upper-critical behavior (HC2) values were extracted from the real part of ac measurements. The field dependence of HC2 is consistent with a two band model. Mössbauer spectra below and above TC consist of a singlet and a doublet, which are attributed to Fe ions which have two or one oxygen ions in their close vicinity, respectively. No change is observed in the major (~75%) singlet related to Fe ions surrounded by two oxygen ions. On t…
ZrO$_2$ nanotubular arrays with intrinsic defects are a promising solid-state basis for the development of devices for detecting, storing, and converting energy. Layers of the self-ordered zirconia nanotubes of 5 $μ$m length and 30 nm diameter, containing oxygen vacancies and their complexes, have been synthesized by anodic oxidation. The spectrally resolved TSL (thermally stimulated luminescence) above room temperature for the samples exposed by UV-irradiation with an energy of 4.1 eV have been studied. Two emission bands with maxima near 2.5 and 2.8 eV, associated with radiative relaxation o…
The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the oxygen deficient perovskites, SrCo1-xMxO3-d with M = Nb and Ru, were investigated. Both Nb- and Ru-substituted cobaltites are weak ferromagnets, with transition temperatures Tm of 130-150 K and 130-180 K, respectively, and both exhibit a spin glass behavior at temperatures below Tf = 80-90 K. It is demonstrated that there exists a strong competition between ferromagnetism and spin glass state, where Co4+ induces ferromagnetism, whereas Nb or Ru substitution at the cobalt sites induces magnetic disorder, and this particular magnetic behavior i…
Tungsten trioxide (WO$_3$) is a paradigmatic electrochromic material, whose peculiar optical properties in the presence of oxygen vacancies or intercalated alkali atoms have been observed and investigated for a long time. In this paper we propose a rationalization of experiments based on first-principles calculations of optical and electrical properties of oxygen deficient (reduced) WO$_3$. Our approach is based on a parameter-free dielectric-dependent hybrid density functional methodology, used in combination with the charge transition levels formalism, for studying excitation mechanisms in t…
The electronic structures of supercells of CeO$_{2-δ}$ have been calculated within the Density Functional Theory (DFT). The equilibrium properties such as lattice constants, bulk moduli and magnetic moments are well reproduced by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Electronic excitations are simulated by robust total energy calculations for constrained states with atomic core- or valence-holes. Pristine ceria CeO$_2$ is found to be a non-magnetic insulator with magnetism setting in as soon as oxygens are removed from the structure. In the ground state of defective ceria, the Ce-$f$ m…
Tungsten trioxide is a versatile material with widespread applications ranging from electrochromic and optoelectronic devices to water splitting and catalysis of chemical reactions. For technological applications, thin films of WO3 are particularly appealing, taking advantage from high surface-to-volume ratio and tunable physical properties. However, the growth of stoichiometric, crystalline thin films is challenging because the deposition conditions are very sensitive to the formation of oxygen vacancies. In this work, we show how background oxygen pressure during pulsed laser deposition can …
The synthesis of SrRuO3 under high-pressure oxygen produces a nonstoichiometric form with randomly distributed vacancies on the Ru-sites, along with a significantly reduced ferromagnetic ordering temperature. In order to gain additional insight into the suppression of the ferromagnetism, local studies utilizing 99,101 Ru zero-field spin-echo NMR, and Ru K-edge XAFS, along with complimentary magnetization and x-ray diffraction measurements, have been carried out on samples of SrRuO3 annealed at both ("ambient") atmospheric pressure and "high-pressure" oxygen (600 atm). Consistent with previous …
We have synthesized highly oxygen deficient HfO$_{2-x}$ thin films by controlled oxygen engineering using reactive molecular beam epitaxy. Above a threshold value of oxygen vacancies, p-type conductivity sets in with up to 6 times 10^{21} charge carriers per cm3. At the same time, the band-gap is reduced continuously by more than 1 eV. We suggest an oxygen vacancy induced p-type defect band as origin of the observed behavior.
We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasin…
Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in the control of the electronic, magnetic, ionic, and transport properties of functional oxide perovskites. Rare earth nickelates (RENiO$_{3-x}$) have emerged over the years as a rich platform to study the interplay between the lattice, the electronic structure, and ordered magnetism. In this study, we investigate the evolution of the electronic and magnetic structure in thin films of RENiO$_{3-x}$, using a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and imaging, resonant X-ray scattering, and extended multiplet ligand field theory modeling. We find that …
