The functional properties of transition metal perovskite oxides are known to result from a complex interplay of magnetism, polarization, strain, and stoichiometry. Here, we show that for materials with a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion, such as LaMnO$_3$ (LMO), the orbital order can also couple to the defect chemistry and induce novel material properties. At low temperatures, LMO exhibits a strong Jahn-Teller distortion that splits the $e_g$ orbitals of the high-spin Mn$^{3+}$ ions and leads to alternating long, short, and intermediate Mn--O bonds. Our DFT+$U$ calculations show that, as a result of this orbital order, the charge localization in LMO upon oxygen vacancy formation differs from other manganites, like SrMnO$_3$, where the two extra electrons reduce the two Mn sites adjacent to the vacancy. In LMO, relaxations around the defect depend on which type of Mn--O bond is broken, affecting the $d$-orbital energies and leading to asymmetric and hence polar excess-electron localization with respect to the vacancy. Moreover, we show that the Mn--O bond lengths, orbital order and consequently the charge localization and polarity are tunable via strain.
The atomic pair distribution function (PDF) of stoichiometric LaMnO_3 has been measured. This has been fit with a structural model to extract the local Jahn-Teller distortion for an ideal Mn(3+)O_6 octahedron. These results are compared to Rietveld refinements of the same data which give the average structure. Since the local structure is being measured in the PDF there is no assumption of long-range orbital order and the real, local, Jahn-Teller distortion is measured directly. We find good agreement both with published crystallographic results and our own Rietveld refinements suggesting that…
The local environment of manganese atoms in LaMnO3 under pressure up to 15.3 GPa has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. For pressures below 8 GPa, no change is detected within the MnO6 octahedra. Above this pressure a continuous reduction of the long Mn-O distance takes place, however the octahedral distortion persists over the whole pressure range. At 15.3 GPa the average Jahn-Teller splitting of the distances is reduced by about one third, indicating that a total removal of the local Jahn-Teller distortion would occur only for pressures around 30 GPa, where metallization is repor…
We studied in detail the structural relaxation and Jahn-Teller distortion in LaMnO3 (001) surface of the orthorhombic phase by means of classical atomistic simulation. It is found that MnO2-terminated surface is more energetically favorable than LaO-terminated surface by 0.34 eV. The standard deviation of Mn-O bond lengths of MnO6 octahedra and Jahn-Teller distortion oscillate in LaMnO3 (001) surface. Our simulated atomic displacements in the surface are compared with some ab initio studies.
Distortions of the oxygen sublattice couple to $e_g$ orbitals of Mn$^{3+}$ and drive a cooperative Jahn-Teller (orbital ordering) transition in LaMnO$_3$. A simple model for this transition is studied. Without further adjustment, the model predicts the shape and stability of small (anti-Jahn-Teller) polarons which form when holes are doped into the material. This leads to a new description of the lightly doped insulator, the anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, and the metal-insulator transition.
Epitaxial thin films of stoichiometric ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ were grown on ${\rm SrTiO_3(110)}$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. From the high resolution x-ray diffraction measurements, the lattice parameters were determined as a function of temperature and the cooperative Jahn-Teller transition was found to occur at $T_{JT}$=573.0 K. Also measured was resonant x-ray scattering intensity of the orthorhombic (100) peak of ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ near the Mn K edge from low temperatures to above $T_{JT}$. We demonstrate that the integrated intensity of the (100) peak is proportional to …
We have studied the interplay between orbital ordering, Jahn-Teller and GdFeO3-type lattice distortions in perovskite-type transition-metal oxides using model Hartree-Fock calculations. It has been found that the covalency between A-site cations and oxygens causes interaction between the Jahn-Teller and GdFeO3-type distortions. The present calculations explain why the d-type Jahn-Teller distortion and orbital ordering compatible with it are realized in LaMnO3, YVO3 and YTiO3
The origin of the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion and orbital-order in LaMnO3 is central to the physics of the manganites. The question is complicated by the simultaneous presence of tetragonal and GdFeO3-type distortions and the strong Hund's rule coupling between e_g and t_2g electrons. To clarify the situation we calculate the transition temperature for the Kugel-Khomskii superexchange mechanism by using the local density approximation+dynamical mean-field method, and disentangle the effects of super-exchange from those of lattice distortions. We find that super-exchange alone would yiel…
LaMnO$_3$ is considered as a prototypical Jahn-Teller perovskite compound, exhibiting a metal to insulator transition at $T_{JT} = 750K$ related to the joint appearance of an electronic orbital ordering and a large lattice Jahn-Teller distortion. From first-principles, we revisit the behavior of LaMnO$_3$ and show that it is not only prone to orbital ordering but also to charge ordering. Both charge and orbital orderings appear to be enabled by rotations of the oxygen octahedra and the subtle competition between them is monitored by a large tetragonal compressive strain, that is itself a Jahn-…
We report on high-temperature electron spin resonance studies of a detwinned LaMnO$_3$ single crystal across the Jahn-Teller transition at $T_{\rm JT}$ = 750 K. The anisotropy of the linewidth and g-factor reflects the local Jahn-Teller distortions in the orbitally ordered phase. A clear jump in the linewidth accompanies the Jahn-Teller transition at $T_{\rm JT}$ = 750 K confirming that the transition is of first order. Already at $T^*$ = 550 K a significant decrease of the reduced linewidth is observed. This temperature scale is discussed with respect to the interaction of the $e_g$-electrons…
We have studied the volume collapse of LaMnO$_3$ at the Jahn- Teller (JT) transition temperature T$_{JT}$=750 K which has recently been found in high temperature powder x- ray and neutron diffraction experiments. We construct a model Hamiltonian involving the pseudospin of Mn$^{3+}$ e$_g$ states, the staggered JT distortion and the volume strain coordinate. We show that the anharmonic coupling between these primary and secondary order parameters leads to the first order JT phase transition associated with a comparatively large reduction of the unit cell volume of $Δ$V/V$\simeq$ 10$^{-2}$. We e…
We use first-principles theory to predict that the application of uniaxial compressive strain leads to a transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic half-metal phase in LaMnO$_3$. We identify the Q2 Jahn-Teller mode as the primary mechanism that drives the transition, indicating that this mode can be used to tune the lattice, charge, and spin coupling. Applying $\simeq$ 6 GPa of uniaxial pressure along the [010] direction activates the transition to a half-metallic $\textit{pseudo-cubic}$ state. The half-metallicity opens the possibility of producing colossal magnetoresis…
Because the ground state has cooperative Jahn-Teller order, electronic excitations in LaMnO$_3$ are predicted to self-trap by local rearrangement of the lattice. The optical spectrum should show a Franck-Condon series, that is, a Gaussian envelope of vibrational sidebands. Existing data are reinterpreted in this way. The Raman spectrum is predicted to have strong multiphonon features.
We investigate the evolution of spin and orbital order in undoped LaMnO$_3$ under increasing temperature with a model including both superexchange and Jahn-Teller interactions. We used several cluster mean field calculation schemes and find coexisting $A$-type antiferromagnetic ($A$-AF) and $C$-type alternating orbital order at low temperature. The value of the Jahn-Teller coupling between strongly correlated $e_g$ orbitals is estimated from the orbital transition temperature at $T_{\rm OO}\simeq 780$ K. By a careful analysis of on-site and on-bond correlations we demonstrate that spin-orbital…
Calculations employing the local density approximation combined with static and dynamical mean-field theories (LDA+U and LDA+DMFT) indicate that the metal-insulator transition observed at 32 GPa in paramagnetic LaMnO3 at room temperature is not a Mott-Hubbard transition, but is caused by orbital splitting of the majority-spin eg bands. For LaMnO3 to be insulating at pressures below 32 GPa, both on-site Coulomb repulsion and Jahn-Teller distortion are needed.
Using density-functional theory with the on-site Coulomb correction (the LDA+U method), we perform the structural optimization of BiMnO3 by starting from different experimentally reported structures. We confirm that irrespectively on the starting condition, all calculations converge to the same centrosymmetric structure, in agreement with the previous finding. Nevertheless, the structural optimization substantially reduces the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion in the system. We attribute this fact to the strong competition of local distortions around the Mn- and Bi-sites: while the local Mn-environm…
We study single hole motion in LaMnO$_3$ using the classical approximation for JT lattice distortions, a modified Lang-Firsov approximation for dynamical breathing-mode phonons, and the self-consistent Born approximation (verified by exact diagonalization) for hole-orbital-excitation scattering. We show that in the realistic parameter space for LaMnO$_3$, quantum effects of electron-phonon interaction are small. The quasiparticle bandwidth $W \simeq 2.2J$ in the purely orbital t-J model. It is strikingly broadened to be of order $t$ by strong static Jahn-Teller lattice distortions even when th…
In low-temperature anti-ferromagnetic LaMnO$_{3}$, strong and localized electronic interactions among Mn 3d electrons prevent a satisfactory description from standard local density and generalized gradient approximations in density functional theory calculations. Here we show that the strong on-site electronic interactions are described well only by using direct and exchange corrections to the intra-orbital Coulomb potential. Only DFT+U calculations with explicit exchange corrections produce a balanced picture of electronic, magnetic and structural observables in agreement with experiment. To …
The effects of uniaxial strain on the structural, orbital, optical, and magnetic properties of LaMnO_3 are calculated using a general elastic energy expression, along with a tight-binding parameterization of the band theory. Tensile uniaxial strain of the order of 2 % (i.e., of the order of magnitude of those induced in thin films by lattice mismatch with substrates) is found to lead to changes in the magnetic ground state, leading to dramatic changes in the band structure and optical conductivity spectrum. The magnetostriction effect associated with the Neel transition of bulk(unstrained) LaM…
We perform charge density functional theory plus $U$ calculation of LaMnO$_3$. While all the previous calculations were based on spin density functionals, our result and analysis show that the use of spin-unpolarized charge-only density is crucial to correctly describe the phase diagram, electronic structure and magnetic property. Using magnetic force linear response calculation, a long-standing issue is clarified regarding the second neighbor out-of-plane interaction strength. We also estimate the orbital-resolved magnetic couplings. Remarkably, the inter-orbital $e_g$-$t_{2g}$ interaction is…
The relative importance of electron-lattice (e-l) and electron-electron (e-e) interactions in ordering orbitals in LaMnO$_3$ is systematically examined within the LDA+$U$ approximation of density functional theory. A realistic effective Hamiltonian is derived from novel Wannier functions analysis of the electronic structure. Surprisingly, e-l interaction ($\simeq 0.9$ eV) alone is found insufficient to stabilize the orbital ordered state. On the other hand, e-e interaction ($\simeq 1.7$ eV) not only induces orbital ordering, but also greatly facilitates the Jahn-Teller distortion via enhanced …
The interaction of coexisting structural instabilities in multiferroic materials gives rise to intriguing coupling phenomena and extraordinarily rich phase diagrams, both in bulk materials and strained thin films. Here we investigate the multiferroic BiMnO3 with its peculiar 6s2 electrons and four interacting mechanisms: electric polarity, octahedra tilts, magnetism, and cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. We have probed structural transitions under high pressure by synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 GPa. We show that BiMnO3 displays under pressure a rich sequence of…
Using the multiband $d-p$ model and unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation we investigate the electronic structure and spin-orbital order in three-dimensional MnO$_3$ lattice such as realized in LaMnO$_3$. The orbital order is induced and stabilized by particular checkerboard pattern of oxygen distortions arising from the Jahn-Teller effect in the presence of strong Coulomb interactions on $e_g$ orbitals of Mn ions. We show that the spin-orbital order can be modeled using a simple \textit{Ansatz} for local crystal fields alternating between two sublattices on Mn ions, which have non-equivalen…
The effect of uniaxial strain on electronic structure and magnetism in LaMnO$_3$ is studied from a model Hamiltonian that illustrates the competition between the Jahn-Teller, super exchange, and double exchange interactions. We retain in our model the three main octahedral distortions ($Q_1, Q_2$, and $Q_3$), which couple to the Mn $(e_g)$ electrons. Our results show the ground state to be a type A antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating state for the unstrained case, consistent with experiments. With tensile strain (stretching along the c axis), the ground state changes into a ferromagnetic and ev…
We present a theoretical study on the relation between the size of the rare earth ions, often known as chemical pressure, and the stability of the coherent Jahn-Teller distortions in undoped perovskite manganites. Using a Keating model expressed in terms of atomic scale symmetry modes, we show that there exists a coupling between the uniform shear distortion and the staggered buckling distortion within the Jahn-Teller energy term. It is found that this coupling provides a mechanism by which the coherent Jahn-Teller distortion is more stabilized by smaller rare earth ions. We analyze the appear…
We develop a procedure to determine the portion of exact Hartree-Fock exchange interaction contained in a hybrid density functional to treat the range of electronic correlation governing the physics of a system as a function of a thermodynamical parameter. This includes systems that depend on physical parameters accessible to experiment (i.e., temperature, pressure, composition, etc.) or those composed of two or more materials such as heterostructures and interfaces. This approach is applied to LaMnO$_3$ where for the first time we are able to simulate the high temperature insulator-to-metal t…
With pulsed laser deposition we have grown c-axis oriented thin films of the nominal composition LaMnO$_{3}$ (LMO) on LSAT(001) substrates. We find that, depending on the oxygen background pressure during growth, the LMO films contain sizeable amounts of La and/or Mn vacancies that strongly influence their electronic and magnetic properties. Specifically, we show that the Mn/La ratio can be systematically varied from 0.92 at 0.11 mbar to 1.09 at 0.30 mbar of oxygen. These cationic vacancies lead to markedly different disorder effects that become most pronounced once the samples are fully oxyge…
Decoupling the effects of geometry and nature of strain in LaMnO$_3$: Interplay of dynamic correlations and uniaxial strain driving magnetic phase transitions
The model developed for LaMnO$_3$ addresses the spin-orbital order by superexchange and Jahn-Teller orbital interactions in the cubic (perovskite) symmetry up to now whereas real crystal structure is strongly deformed. We identify and explain three \textit{a priori} important physical effects arising from tetragonal deformation: (i) the splitting of $e_g$ orbitals $\propto E_z$, (ii) the directional renormalization of $d-p$ hybridization $t_{pd}$, and (iii) the directional renormalization of charge excitation energies. Using the example of LaMnO$_3$ crystal we evaluate their magnitude. It is f…
Motivated by the puzzling report of the observation of a ferromagnetic insulating state in LaMnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures, we calculate the electronic and magnetic state of LaMnO$_3$, coherently matched to a SrTiO$_3$ square substrate within a "strained-bulk" geometry. We employ three different density functional theory based computational approaches: (a) density functional theory (DFT) supplemented with Hubbard U (DFT+U), (b) DFT + dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), and (c) a hybrid functional treatment of the exchange-correlation functional. While the first two approaches include loca…
We study the ground state orbital ordering of $LaMnO_3$, at weak electron-phonon coupling, when the spin state is A-type antiferromagnet. We determine the orbital ordering by extending to our Jahn-Teller system a recently developed Peierls instability framework for the Holstein model [1]. By using two-dimensional dynamic response functions corresponding to a mixed Jahn-Teller mode, we establish that the $Q_2$ mode determines the orbital order.
An earlier analysis of manganese oxides in various charge states indicated that free-atom term values and universal coupling gave a reasonable account of the cohesion. This approach is here extended to LaxSr(1-x)MnO3 in a perovskite structure, and a wide range of properties, with comparable success, including the cohesion, as a function of x. Magnetic and electronic properties are treated in terms of the same parameters and the cluster orbitals used for cohesion. This includes an estimate of the Neel and Curie-Weiss temperatures for SrMnO3, an antiferromagnetic insulator, and the magnitude of …
The local atomic disorder and the electronic structure in the environment of manganese atoms in LaMnO_3 has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, over a temperature range (300K to 870K) covering the orbital ordering transition (710K). The Mn-O distances splitting into short and long bonds (1.95 and 2.15A) is kept across the transition temperature, so that the MnO_6 octahedra remain locally Jahn-Teller distorted. Discontinuities in the Mn local structure are identified in the extended x-ray fine structure spectra at this temperature, associated to a reduction of the disorder in the sup…
Electronic reconstruction at the polar interface LaMnO$_3$/SrMnO$_3$ (LMO/SMO) (100) resulting from the polar catastrophe is studied from a model Hamiltonian that includes the double and super exchange interactions, the Madelung potential, and the Jahn-Teller coupling terms relevant for the manganites. We show that the polar catastrophe, originating from the alternately charged LMO layers and neutral SMO layers, is quenched by the accumulation of an extra half electron per cell in the interface region as in the case of the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. In addition, the Mn e$_g$ electrons leak…
We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe three-dimensional perovskite (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$) manganites and study the magnetic and orbital order on $4\times 4\times 4$ cluster using correlated wave functions. The model includes the kinetic energy, and on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons, antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between $S=3/2$ core spins, and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller modes. The model reproduces the experimentally observed magnetic order: ($i$) $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase …
The physics of manganites is often described within an effective two-band tight-binding (TB) model for the Mn e_g electrons, which apart from the kinetic energy includes also a local "Hund's rule" coupling to the t_{2g} core spin and a local coupling to the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of the oxygen octahedra. We test the validity of this model by comparing the energy dispersion calculated for the TB model with the full Kohn-Sham band-structure calculated within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) to density functional theory. We analyze the effect of magnetic order, JT distortions, and…
The Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion that can remove electronic degeneracies in partially occupied states and results in systematic atomic displacements is a common underlying feature to many of the intriguing phenomena observed in 3d perovskites, encompassing magnetism, superconductivity, orbital ordering and colossal magnetoresistance. Although the seminal Jahn and Teller theorem has been postulated almost a century ago, the origins of this effect in perovskite materials are still debated, including propositions such as super exchange, spin-phonon coupling, sterically induced lattice distortions,…
We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid to orbital ordered states. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals play a prominent role in LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, where they compete with the Jahn-Teller effect and trigger the C-type antiferromagnetic order.

Heterostructures of mixed-valence manganites are still under intense scrutiny, due to the occurrence of exotic quantum phenomena linked to electronic correlation and interfacial composition. For instance, if two anti-ferromagnetic insulators as LaMnO$_3$ and SrMnO$_3$ are grown in a (001)-oriented superlattice, a half-metallic ferromagnet may form, provided that the thickness is sufficiently small to allow tunneling across interfaces. In this article, we employ electronic structure calculations to show that all the layers of a (111)-oriented LaMnO$_3$|SrMnO$_3$ superlattice retain a half-metal…

We present a rationalization of the Raman spectra of orthorhombic and rhombohedral, stoichiometric and doped, manganese perovskites. In particular we study RMnO3 (R= La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Y and Ca) and the different phases of Ca or Sr doped RMnO3 compounds as well as cation deficient RMnO3. The spectra of manganites can be understood as combinations of two kinds of spectra corresponding to two structural configurations of MnO6 octahedra and independently of the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. The main peaks of compounds with regular MnO6 octahedra, as CaMnO3, highly Ca …
