We show that there are no infinite maximal almost disjoint ("mad") families in Solovay's model, thus solving a long-standing problem posed by A.D.R. Mathias in 1967. We also give a new proof of Mathias' theorem that no analytic infinite almost disjoint family can be maximal, and show more generally that if Martin's Axiom holds at $κ<2^{\aleph_0}$, then no $κ$-Souslin infinite almost disjoint family can be maximal. Finally we show that if $\aleph_1^{L[a]}<\aleph_1$, then there are no $Σ^1_2[a]$ infinite mad families.
We consider the definability of mad families in vector spaces of the form $\underset{n<ω}{\bigoplus} F$ where $F$ is a field of cardinality $\leq \aleph_0$. We show that there is no analytic mad family of subspaces when $F=\mathbb{F}_2$, partially answering a question of Smythe. Our proof relies on a variant of Mathias forcing restricted to a certain idempotent ultrafilter whose existence follows from Glazer's proof of Hindman's theorem.
We consider some classical maps from the theory of abelian varieties and their moduli spaces and prove their definability, on restricted domains, in the o-minimal structure $\Rae$. In particular, we prove that the embedding of moduli space of principally polarized ableian varierty, $Sp(2g,\Z)\backslash \CH_g$, is definable in $\Rae$, when restricted to Siegel's fundamental set $\fF_g$. We also prove the definability, on appropriate domains, of embeddings of families of abelian varieties into projective space.
We consider maximal almost disjoint families of block subspaces of countable vector spaces, focusing on questions of their size and definability. We prove that the minimum infinite cardinality of such a family cannot be decided in ZFC and that the "spectrum" of cardinalities of mad families of subspaces can be made arbitrarily large, in analogy to results for mad families on $ω$ . We apply the author's local Ramsey theory for vector spaces to give partial results concerning their definability.
Under MA_{omega_1} every uncountable almost disjoint family is either anti-Luzin or has an uncountable Luzin subfamily. This fails under CH. Related properties are also investigated.
We provide a proof that analytic almost disjoint families of infinite sets of integers cannot be maximal using a result of Bourgain about compact sets of Baire class one functions. Inspired by this and related ideas, we then provide a new proof of that there are no maximal almost disjoint families in Solovay's model. We then use the ideas behind this proof to provide an extension of a dichotomy result by Rosenthal and by Bourgain, Fremlin and Talagrand to general pointwise bounded functions in Solovay's model. We study the notion of $\mathcal J$-MAD families where $\mathcal J$ is a Borel ideal on $ω$. We show that if $\mathcal J$ is an arbitrary $F_σ$ ideal, or is any finite or countably iterated Fubini product of $F_σ$ ideals, then there are no analytic infinite $\mathcal J$-MAD families, and assuming Projective Determinacy there are no infinite projective $\mathcal J$-MAD families; and under the full Axiom of Determinacy + $V=\mathbf{L}(\mathbb{R})$ there are no infinite $\mathcal J$-mad families. The relations M(kappa,lambda,mu)->B [resp. B(sigma)] meaning that if A subset [kappa]^lambda with |A|=kappa is mu-almost disjoint then A has property B [resp. has a sigma-transversal] had been introduced and studied under GCH by Erdos and Hajnal in 1961. Our two main results here say the following: Assume GCH and rho be any regular cardinal with a supercompact [resp. 2-huge] cardinal above rho. Then there is a rho-closed forcing P such that, in V^P, we have both GCH and M(rho^{(+rho+1)},rho^+,rho) not-> B [resp. M(rho^{(+rho+1)},lambda,rho) not-> B(rho^+) for all lambda =< rho^{(+rho+1)}].
Given a family $F$ of pairwise almost disjoint sets on a countable set $S$, we study maximal almost disjoint (mad) families $F^+$ extending $F$. We define $a^+(F)$ to be the minimal possible cardinality of $F^+\setminus F$ for such $F^+$, and $a^+(κ)=\sup\{a^+(F): |F| \leq κ\}$. We show that all infinite cardinal less than or equal to the continuum continuum can be represented as $a^+(F)$ for some almost disjoint $F$ and that the inequalities $\aleph_1=a<a^+(\aleph_1)=c$ and $a=a^+(\aleph_1)<c$ are both consistent. The collection of branches (maximal linearly ordered sets of nodes) of the tree ${}^{<ω}ω$ (ordered by inclusion) forms an almost disjoint family (of sets of nodes). Using ideas from Shelah's recent proof that a completely separable maximal almost disjoint family exists when $\c < {\aleph}_ω$, we construct a weakly tight family under the hypothesis $\s \leq \b < {\aleph}_ω$. The case when $\s < \b$ is handled in $\ZFC$ and does not require $\b < {\aleph}_ω$, while an additional PCF type hypothesis, which holds when $\b < {\aleph}_ω$ is used to treat the case $\s = \b$. We study two different types of (maximal) almost disjoint families: very mad families and (maximal) cofinitary groups. For the very mad families we prove the basic existence results. We prove that MA implies there exist many pairwise orthogonal families, and that CH implies that for any very mad family there is one orthogonal to it. Finally we prove that the axiom of constructibility implies that there exists a coanalytic very mad family. Cofinitary groups have a natural action on the natural numbers. The second author has recently shown ([20]) that any selectively (a) almost disjoint family must have cardinality strictly less than $2^{\alpeh_0}$, so under the Continuum Hypothesis such a family is necessarily countable. However, it is also shown in the same paper that $2^{\alpeh_0} < 2^{\alpeh_1}$ alone does not avoid the existence of uncountable selectively (a) almost disjoint families. We survey results regarding the definability and size of maximal discrete sets in analytic hypergraphs. Our main examples include maximal almost disjoint (or mad) families, $\mathcal I$-mad families, maximal eventually different families, and maximal cofinitary groups. We discuss the non-increasing sequence of cardinal characteristics $\mathfrak a_ξ$, for $ξ<ω_1$ as well as the notions of spectra of characteristics and optimal projective witnesses. We give an account of Zhang's forcing to add generic cofinitary permutations, and of a version of this forcing with built-in coding.
Two sets are said to be almost disjoint if their intersection is finite. Almost disjoint subsets of [omega]^omega and omega^omega have been studied for quite some time. In particular, the cardinal invariants a and a_e, defined to be the minimum cardinality of a maximal infinite almost disjoint family of [omega]^omega and omega^omega respectively, are known to be consistently less than continuum. Here we examine analogs for functions in R^omega and projections on l^2, showing that they too can be consistently less than continuum.
We give a combinatorial characterization of when a maximal almost disjoint family of a weakly compact cardinal $κ$ is indestructible by the higher random forcing $\mathbb Q_κ$. We then use this characterisation to show that $\mathrm{add}(\mathbf{null}_κ) = \mathfrak b_κ= \mathfrak c_κ$ implies the existence $\mathbb Q_κ$-indestructible family. The results and proofs presented here are parallel to those for classical random forcing.
A combinatorial principle CECA is formulated and its equivalence with GCH+ certain weakenings of Box_lambda for singular lambda is proved. CECA is used to show that certain ``almost point- < tau'' families can be refined to point- < tau families by removing a small set from each member of the family. This theorem in turn is used to show the consistency of ``every first countable T_1-space with a weakly uniform base has a point-countable base.''
We study the definability of maximal towers and of inextendible linearly ordered towers (ilt's), a notion that is more general than that of a maximal tower. We show that there is, in the constructible universe, a $Π^1_1$ definable maximal tower that is indestructible by any proper Suslin poset. We prove that the existence of a $Σ^1_2$ ilt implies that $ω_1 = ω_1^L$. Moreover we show that analogous results hold for other combinatorial families of reals. We show that if all collections of infinite subsets of $\N$ have the Ramsey property, then there are no infinite maximal almost disjoint (mad) families. This solves a long-standing problem going back to Mathias \cite{mathias}. The proof exploits an idea which has its natural roots in ergodic theory, topological dynamics, and invariant descriptive set theory: We use that a certain function associated to a purported mad family is invariant under the equivalence relation $E_0$, and thus is constant on a "large" set. Sobota we call a family $\mathcal F$ of infinite subsets of $\mathbb N$ a Rosenthal family if it can replace the family of all infinite subsets of $\mathbb N$ in classical Rosenthal's Lemma concerning sequences of measures on pairwise disjoint sets. We resolve two problems on Rosenthal families: every ultrafilter is a Rosenthal family and the minimal size of a Rosenthal family is exactly equal to the reaping cardinal $\mathfrak r$. We show in ZFC that the existence of completely separable maximal almost disjoint families of subsets of $ω$ implies that the modal logic S4.1.2 is complete with respect to the Čech-Stone compactification of the natural numbers, the space $βω$. In the same fashion we prove that the modal logic S4 is complete with respect to the space $ω^*=βω\setminusω$. This improves the results of G. Bezhanishvili and J. Harding who prove these theorems under stronger assumptions ($\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{c}$). Our proof is also somewhat simpler.
The mad spectrum is the set of all cardinalities of infinite maximal almost disjoint families on omega. We treat the problem to characterize those sets A which, in some forcing extension of the universe, can be the mad spectrum. We solve this problem to some extent. What remains open is the possible values of min(A) and max(A).
We show that it is consistent that the continuum is as large as you wish, and for each uncountable cardinal $κ$ below the continuum, there are a subset $T$ of the reals and a family $A$ of countable subsets of $T$ such that (1) both $T$ and $A$ have cardinality $κ$, (2) $|\bar{a}\cap T|=κ$ for each $a\in A$, (3) for each uncountable subset of $T$ contains some elements of $A$, and so (i) there is an almost disjoint family of subsets of the reals with size and chromatic number $κ$, (ii) there is a locally compact, locally countable $T_2$ space with cardinality spectrum $\{ω,κ\}$.
We recall some classical results relating normality and some natural weakenings of normality in $Ψ$-spaces over almost disjoint families of branches in the Cantor tree to special sets of reals like $Q$-sets, $λ$-sets and $σ$-sets.
