The relations M(kappa,lambda,mu)->B [resp. B(sigma)] meaning that if A subset [kappa]^lambda with |A|=kappa is mu-almost disjoint then A has property B [resp. has a sigma-transversal] had been introduced and studied under GCH by Erdos and Hajnal in 1961. Our two main results here say the following:
Assume GCH and rho be any regular cardinal with a supercompact [resp. 2-huge] cardinal above rho. Then there is a rho-closed forcing P such that, in V^P, we have both GCH and M(rho^{(+rho+1)},rho^+,rho) not-> B [resp. M(rho^{(+rho+1)},lambda,rho) not-> B(rho^+) for all lambda =< rho^{(+rho+1)}].
Under MA_{omega_1} every uncountable almost disjoint family is either anti-Luzin or has an uncountable Luzin subfamily. This fails under CH. Related properties are also investigated.
We show that there are no infinite maximal almost disjoint ("mad") families in Solovay's model, thus solving a long-standing problem posed by A.D.R. Mathias in 1967. We also give a new proof of Mathias' theorem that no analytic infinite almost disjoint family can be maximal, and show more generally that if Martin's Axiom holds at $κ<2^{\aleph_0}$, then no $κ$-Souslin infinite almost disjoint family can be maximal. Finally we show that if $\aleph_1^{L[a]}<\aleph_1$, then there are no $Σ^1_2[a]$ infinite mad families.
We provide a proof that analytic almost disjoint families of infinite sets of integers cannot be maximal using a result of Bourgain about compact sets of Baire class one functions. Inspired by this and related ideas, we then provide a new proof of that there are no maximal almost disjoint families in Solovay's model. We then use the ideas behind this proof to provide an extension of a dichotomy result by Rosenthal and by Bourgain, Fremlin and Talagrand to general pointwise bounded functions in Solovay's model. We study the notion of $\mathcal J$-MAD families where $\mathcal J$ is a Borel ideal on $ω$. We show that if $\mathcal J$ is an arbitrary $F_σ$ ideal, or is any finite or countably iterated Fubini product of $F_σ$ ideals, then there are no analytic infinite $\mathcal J$-MAD families, and assuming Projective Determinacy there are no infinite projective $\mathcal J$-MAD families; and under the full Axiom of Determinacy + $V=\mathbf{L}(\mathbb{R})$ there are no infinite $\mathcal J$-mad families. We prove in ZFC that the Baer-Specker group Z^omega has 2^{aleph_1} non-free pure subgroups of cardinality aleph_1 which are almost disjoint: there is no non-free subgroup embeddable in any pair.
Given a family $F$ of pairwise almost disjoint sets on a countable set $S$, we study maximal almost disjoint (mad) families $F^+$ extending $F$. We define $a^+(F)$ to be the minimal possible cardinality of $F^+\setminus F$ for such $F^+$, and $a^+(κ)=\sup\{a^+(F): |F| \leq κ\}$. We show that all infinite cardinal less than or equal to the continuum continuum can be represented as $a^+(F)$ for some almost disjoint $F$ and that the inequalities $\aleph_1=a<a^+(\aleph_1)=c$ and $a=a^+(\aleph_1)<c$ are both consistent. The collection of branches (maximal linearly ordered sets of nodes) of the tree ${}^{<ω}ω$ (ordered by inclusion) forms an almost disjoint family (of sets of nodes). Using ideas from Shelah's recent proof that a completely separable maximal almost disjoint family exists when $\c < {\aleph}_ω$, we construct a weakly tight family under the hypothesis $\s \leq \b < {\aleph}_ω$. The case when $\s < \b$ is handled in $\ZFC$ and does not require $\b < {\aleph}_ω$, while an additional PCF type hypothesis, which holds when $\b < {\aleph}_ω$ is used to treat the case $\s = \b$. We study two different types of (maximal) almost disjoint families: very mad families and (maximal) cofinitary groups. For the very mad families we prove the basic existence results. We prove that MA implies there exist many pairwise orthogonal families, and that CH implies that for any very mad family there is one orthogonal to it. Finally we prove that the axiom of constructibility implies that there exists a coanalytic very mad family. Cofinitary groups have a natural action on the natural numbers. The second author has recently shown ([20]) that any selectively (a) almost disjoint family must have cardinality strictly less than $2^{\alpeh_0}$, so under the Continuum Hypothesis such a family is necessarily countable. However, it is also shown in the same paper that $2^{\alpeh_0} < 2^{\alpeh_1}$ alone does not avoid the existence of uncountable selectively (a) almost disjoint families. Two sets are said to be almost disjoint if their intersection is finite. Almost disjoint subsets of [omega]^omega and omega^omega have been studied for quite some time. In particular, the cardinal invariants a and a_e, defined to be the minimum cardinality of a maximal infinite almost disjoint family of [omega]^omega and omega^omega respectively, are known to be consistently less than continuum. Here we examine analogs for functions in R^omega and projections on l^2, showing that they too can be consistently less than continuum.
A combinatorial principle CECA is formulated and its equivalence with GCH+ certain weakenings of Box_lambda for singular lambda is proved. CECA is used to show that certain ``almost point- < tau'' families can be refined to point- < tau families by removing a small set from each member of the family. This theorem in turn is used to show the consistency of ``every first countable T_1-space with a weakly uniform base has a point-countable base.''

We recall some classical results relating normality and some natural weakenings of normality in $Ψ$-spaces over almost disjoint families of branches in the Cantor tree to special sets of reals like $Q$-sets, $λ$-sets and $σ$-sets. We introduce a new class of special sets of reals which corresponds the corresponding almost disjoint family of branches being $\aleph_0$-separated. A space X is kappa-resolvable (resp. almost kappa-resolvable) if it contains kappa dense sets that are pairwise disjoint (resp. almost disjoint over the ideal of nowhere dense subsets of X). Answering a problem raised by Juhasz, Soukup, and Szentmiklossy, and improving a consistency result of Comfort and Hu, we prove, in ZFC, that for every infinite cardinal {kappa} there is an almost 2^{kappa}-resolvable but not {omega}_1-resolvable space of dispersion character {kappa} .
