Bions are multiple fractional instanton configurations with zero instanton charge playing important roles in quantum field theories on a compactified space with a twisted boundary condition. We classify fractional instantons and bions in the $SU(N)$ principal chiral model on ${\mathbb R}^2 \times S^1$ with twisted boundary conditions. We find that fractional instantons are global vortices wrapping around $S^1$ with their $U(1)$ moduli twisted along $S^1$, that carry $1/N$ instanton (baryon) numbers for the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetric twisted boundary condition and irrational instanton numbers for generic boundary condition. We work out neutral and charged bions for the $SU(3)$ case with the ${\mathbb Z}_3$ symmetric twisted boundary condition. We also find for generic boundary conditions that only the simplest neutral bions have zero instanton charges but instanton charges are not canceled out for charged bions. A correspondence between fractional instantons and bions in the $SU(N)$ principal chiral model and those in Yang-Mills theory is given through a non-Abelian Josephson junction.
Recently, multiple fractional instanton configurations with zero instanton charge, called bions, have been revealed to play important roles in quantum field theories on compactified spacetime. In two dimensions, fractional instantons and bions have been extensively studied in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model and the Grassmann sigma model on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^1$ with the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetric twisted boundary condition. Fractional instantons in these models are domain walls with a localized $U(1)$ modulus twisted half along their world volume. In this paper, we classify fractional insta…
We classify bions in the Grassmann $Gr_{N_{\rm F},N_{\rm C}}$ sigma model (including the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We formulate these models as $U(N_{\rm C})$ gauge theories with $N_{\rm F}$ flavors in the fundamental representations. These theories can be promoted to supersymmetric gauge theories and further can be embedded into D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, termed neutral bions and charged bions, which are ident…
We investigate non-BPS exact solutions in ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions, by using the Din-Zakrzewski projection method. We focus on the relation of the non-BPS solutions to the ansatz of multi-instanton (bion) configurations and discuss their significance in the context of the resurgence theory. We find that the transition between seemingly distinct configurations of multi-instantons occur as moduli changes in the non-BPS solutions, and the simplest non-BPS exact solution corresponds to multi-bion configurations with fully-co…
Classical configurations in the CP^{N-1} model on R^1 x S^1 is studied with twisted boundary conditions. Starting from fractional instantons with the Z_N twisted boundary conditions, we review briefly the relevance of our study to resurgence phenomenon in field theory. We consider primarily configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, called "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons". We construct an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractional instanton (nu=1/N) and one fractional anti-instanton…
We study classical configurations in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractionalized-instantons, termed "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons" by Ünsal and his collaborators. For ${\mathbb Z}_N$ twisted boundary conditions, we consider an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractionalized instanton ($ν=1/N$) and one fractionalized anti-instanton ($ν=-1/N$) at large separations, and exhibi…
We study the dynamics of four dimensional gauge theories with adjoint fermions for all gauge groups, both in perturbation theory and non-perturbatively, by using circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions for the fermions. There are new gauge phenomena. We show that, to all orders in perturbation theory, many gauge groups are Higgsed by the gauge holonomy around the circle to a product of both abelian and nonabelian gauge group factors. Non-perturbatively there are monopole-instantons with fermion zero modes and two types of monopole-anti-monopole molecules, called bions. One ty…
Quantum systems with multiple degenerate classical harmonic minima exhibit new non-perturbative phenomena which are not present for the double-well and periodic potentials. The simplest characteristic example of this family is the triple-well potential. Despite the fact that instantons are exact semiclassical solutions with finite and minimal action, they do not contribute to the energy spectrum at leading order in the semiclassical analysis. This is because the instanton fluctuation prefactor vanishes, which can be interpreted as the action becoming infinite quantum mechanically. Instead, the…
It has been argued that many non-perturbative phenomena in quantum mechanics (QM) and quantum field theory (QFT) are determined by complex field configurations, and that these contributions should be understood in terms of of Picard-Lefschetz theory. In this work we compute the contribution from non-BPS multi-instanton configurations, such as instanton-anti-instanton $[{I}\bar{I}]$ pairs, and argue that these contributions should be interpreted as exact critical points at infinity. The Lefschetz thimbles associated with such critical points have a specific structure arising from the presence o…
We derive the semiclassical contributions from the real and complex bions in the two-dimensional $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ sigma model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^{1}$ with a twisted boundary condition. The bion configurations are saddle points of the complexified Euclidean action, which can be viewed as bound states of a pair of fractional instantons with opposite topological charges. We first derive the bion solutions by solving the equation of motion in the model with a potential which simulates an interaction induced by fermions in the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ quantum mechanics. The bion solutions have …
We discuss the non-perturbative contributions from real and complex saddle point solutions in the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ quantum mechanics with fermionic degrees of freedom, using the Lefschetz thimble formalism beyond the gaussian approximation. We find bion solutions, which correspond to (complexified) instanton-antiinstanton configurations stabilized in the presence of the fermionic degrees of freedom. By computing the one-loop determinants in the bion backgrounds, we obtain the leading order contributions from both the real and complex bion solutions. To incorporate quasi zero modes which become …
We investigate the lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small) with the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetric twisted boundary condition, where a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences ($L_{s}\gg L_τ$) is taken to approximate ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. We find that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter of the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetry, remains consistent with zero ($|\langle P\rangle|\sim 0$) from small to relatively large inverse coupling $β$ (from large to small $L_τ$). As $β$ increases, the distribution of the Polya…
We discuss an extension of the instanton-dyon liquid model that includes twisted light quarks in the fundamental representation with explicit $Z_{N_c}$ symmetry for the case with equal number of colors $N_c$ and flavors $N_f$. We map the model on a 3-dimensional quantum effective theory, and analyze it in the mean-field approximation. The effective potential and the vacuum chiral condensates are made explicit for $N_f=N_c=2, 3$. The low temperature phase is center symmetric but breaks spontaneously flavor symmetry with $N_f-1$ massless pions. The high temperature phase breaks center symmetry b…
We study half-twisted linear sigma models relevant to (0,2) compactifications of the heterotic string. Focusing on theories with a (2,2) locus, we examine the linear model parameter space and the dependence of genus zero half-twisted correlators on these parameters. We show that in a class of theories the correlators and parameters separate into A and B types, present techniques to compute the dependence, and apply these to some examples. These results should bear on the mathematics of (0,2) mirror symmetry and the physics of the moduli space and Yukawa couplings in heterotic compactifications…
Non-Abelian Josephson junction is a junction of non-Abelian color superconductors sandwiching an insulator, or non-Abelian domain wall if flexible, whose low-energy dynamics is described by a $U(N)$ principal chiral model with the conventional pion mass. A non-Abelian Josephson vortex is a non-Abelian vortex (color magnetic flux tube) residing inside the junction, that is described as a non-Abelian sine-Gordon soliton. In this paper, we propose Josephson instantons and Josephson monopoles, that is, Yang-Mills instantons and monopoles inside a non-Abelian Josephson junction, respectively, and s…
We study the non-perturbative dynamics of the two dimensional ${O(N)}$ and Grassmannian sigma models by using compactification with twisted boundary conditions on $\mathbb R \times S^1$, semi-classical techniques and resurgence. While the $O(N)$ model has no instantons for $N>3$, it has (non-instanton) saddles on $\mathbb R^2$, which we call 2d-saddles. On $\mathbb R \times S^1$, the resurgent relation between perturbation theory and non-perturbative physics is encoded in new saddles, which are associated with the affine root system of the ${\frak o}(N) $ algebra. These events may be viewed as…
Twisted classical solutions to the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model play a key role in the analysis of such models on the spatially compactified cylinder $\mathbb{S}_L^1 \times {\mathbb{R}^1}$ and have recently been shown to be important for the resurgent structure of this quantum field theory. Instantons and non-self-dual solutions both fractionalize, and domain walls formed by such topological solutions can be associated with $N$-vacua having maximally repulsive energy eigenvalues. The purpose of this paper is to reinforce this view through the investigation of a number of parallels between the $\m…
We exhaustively construct instanton solutions and elucidate their properties in one-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic chiral magnets based on the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model description of spin chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. By introducing an easy-axis potential and a staggered magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of ground-state phases with two points (or one point) in the easy-axis dominant cases, a helical modulation at a fixed latitude of the sphere, and a tricritical point allowing helical modulations at an arbitrary latitude. We find that instantons…
We investigate the phase structure of the compactified $2$-dimensional nonlinear $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model with respect to two $θ$-terms. Based on the circle compactification with the ${\mathbb Z}_{3}$-twisted boundary condition, which preserves an 't Hooft anomaly of the original uncompactified theory, we perform the semiclassical analysis based on the dilute instanton gas approximation (DIGA). We clarify classical vacua of the theory and derive fractional instanton solutions connecting these vacua. The resulting phase structure based on DIGA exhibits the quantum phase transitions and t…
I study finite-temperature $\mathcal N=1$ super Yang-Mills for any gauge group $G=A_N, B_N, C_N, D_N, E_{6,7,8},F_4,G_2$, compactified from four dimensions on a torus, $\mathbb R^2\times S^1_L\times S^1_β$. I examine in particular the low temperature regime $L\llβ=1/T$, where $L$ is the length of the spatial circle with periodic boundary conditions and with anti-periodic boundary conditions for the adjoint gauginos along the thermal cycle $S^1_β$. For small such $L$ we are in a regime were semiclassical calculations can be performed and a transition occurs at $T_c$ much smaller than $1/NL$. Th…
In the leading order of the large-$N$ approximation, we study the renormalon ambiguity in the gluon (or, more appropriately, photon) condensate in the 2D supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model on~$\mathbb{R}\times S^1$ with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ twisted boundary conditions. In our large~$N$ limit, the combination $ΛR$, where $Λ$ is the dynamical scale and $R$~is the $S^1$ radius, is kept fixed (we set $ΛR\ll1$ so that the perturbative expansion with respect to the coupling constant at the mass scale~$1/R$ is meaningful). We extract the perturbative part from the large-$N$ expression of the gluo…
We study twisted circle compactification of 6d $(2,0)$ SCFTs to 5d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric gauge theories with non-simply-laced gauge groups. We provide two complementary approaches towards the BPS partition functions, reflecting the 5d and 6d point of view respectively. The first is based on the blowup equations for the instanton partition function, from which in particular we determine explicitly the one-instanton contribution for all simple Lie groups. The second is based on the modular bootstrap program, and we propose a novel modular ansatz for the twisted elliptic genera that tr…
This work examines non-perturbative dynamics of a $2$-dimensional QFT by using discrete 't Hooft anomaly, semi-classics with circle compactification and bosonization. We focus on charge-$q$ $N$-flavor Schwinger model, and also Wess-Zumino-Witten model. We first apply the recent developments of discrete 't Hooft anomaly matching to theories on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and its compactification to $\mathbb{R} \times S^1_L$. We then compare the 't Hooft anomaly with dynamics of the models by explicitly constructing eigenstates and calculating physical quantities on the cylinder spacetime with periodic and f…
We derive the exact supergravity profile for the twisted scalar field emitted by a system of fractional D3 branes at a Z2 orbifold singularity supporting N=2 quiver gauge theories with unitary groups and bifundamental matter. At the perturbative level this twisted field is "dual" to the gauge coupling but it is corrected non-perturbatively by an infinite tower of fractional D-instantons. The explicit microscopic description allows to derive the gravity profile from disk amplitudes computing the emission rate of the twisted scalar field in terms of chiral correlators in the dual gauge theory. W…
On a five dimensional simply connected Sasaki-Einstein manifold, one can construct Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter with at least two supersymmetries. The partition function of these theories localises on the contact instantons, however the contact instanton equations are not elliptic. It turns out that these equations can be embedded into the Haydys-Witten equations (which are elliptic) in the same way the 4D anti-self-dual instanton equations are embedded in the Vafa-Witten equations. We show that under some favourable circumstances, the latter equations will reduce to the former by pro…
We study the $\mathcal N=2$ field theory realized by D3-branes on the ${\mathbb C}^2/{\mathbb Z}_2$ orbifold. The dual supergravity solution exhibits a repulson singularity cured by the enhancon mechanism. By comparing the open and closed string descriptions of a probe D-instanton, we can compute the exact non-perturbative profile of the supergravity twisted field, which determines the supergravity background. We then show how the non-trivial IR physics of the field theory translates into the stringy effects that give rise to the enhancon mechanism and the associated excision procedure.
We present the results on topological susceptibility and chiral observables in $N_f=2+1+1$ QCD for temperature range $120<T<600$ MeV. The lattice simulations are performed with Wilson twisted mass fermions at physical pion, strange and charm masses. In high-$T$ region $T\gtrsim 300$ MeV the chiral observables are shown to follow leading order Griffith analyticity, and the topological susceptibility follows a power-law decay as in the instanton dilute gas models. The measured topological susceptibility is used to estimate the mass of QCD axion. The resulting axion mass constraints are in agreem…
We investigate QCD with adjoint Dirac fermions on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with generic boundary conditions for fermions along $S^1$. By means of perturbation theory, semiclassical methods and a chiral effective model, we elucidate a rich phase structure in the space spanned by the $S^1$ compactification scale $L$, twisted fermionic boundary condition $ϕ$ and the fermion mass $m$. We found various phases with or without chiral and center symmetry breaking, separated by first- and second-order phase transitions, which in specific limits ($ϕ=0$, $ϕ=π$, $L\to 0$ and $m\to \infty$) reproduce known…
According to recent studies on resurgence scenario of quantum systems, some topological objects with fractional charges play an important role to see the resurgence structure. In this talk, we report a numerical evidence of the fractional-instantons of the SU($3$) gauge theory. The fractional-instanton appears in a weak coupling regime, if the theory is regularized by an infrared (IR) cutoff via the $1$-form twisted boundary conditions. The Polyakov loop is also measured to investigate the center symmetry and confinement. The fractional-instanton corresponds to a solution linking two of degene…
Motivated by recent studies on the resurgence structure of quantum field theories, we numerically study the nonperturbative phenomena of the SU($3$) gauge theory in a weak coupling regime. We find that topological objects with a fractional charge emerge if the theory is regularized by an infrared (IR) cutoff via the twisted boundary conditions. Some configurations with nonzero instanton number are generated as a semi-classical configuration in the Monte Carlo simulation even in the weak coupling regime. Furthermore, some of them consist of multiple fractional-instantons. We also measure the Po…
We report the results of the lattice simulation of the ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small). We take a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences to approximate the model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. For periodic boundary condition imposed in the $S_τ^{1}$ direction, we show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as the compactified circumference is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. For ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition, we find that, ev…
We discuss the instanton-dyon liquid model with $N_f$ Majorana quark flavors in the adjoint representation of color $SU_c(2)$ at finite temperature. We briefly recall the index theorem on $S^1\times R^3$ for twisted adjoint fermions in a BPS dyon background of arbitrary holonomy, and use the ADHM construction to explicit the adjoint anti-periodic zero modes. We use these results to derive the partition function of an interacting instanton-dyon ensemble with $N_f$ light and anti-periodic adjoint quarks. We develop the model in details by mapping the theory on a 3-dimensional quantum effective t…
We analyze two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models at nonzero chemical potentials, which are governed by a complex action. In the spirit of contour deformations (thimbles) we extend the fields into the complex plane, which allows to incorporate the chemical potentials mu as twisted boundary conditions. We write down the equations of motion and find exact BPS-like solutions in terms of pairs of (anti)holomorphic functions, in particular generalizations of unit charge and fractional instantons to generic mu. The decay of these solutions is controled by the imaginary part of mu and a vanishing ima…
In this note we calculate elliptic genus in various examples of twisted chiral de Rham complex on two dimensional toric compact manifolds and Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric manifolds. At first the elliptic genus is calculated for the line bundle twisted chiral de Rham complex on a compact smooth toric manifold and K3 hypersurface in \mathbb{P}^{3} . Then we twist chiral de Rham complex by sheaves localized on positive codimension submanifolds in \mathbb{P}^{2} and calculate in each case the elliptic genus. In the last example the elliptic genus of chiral de Rham complex on \mathbb{P}^{2} tw…
We study $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that arise as the compactification of the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory of type $E_6$ on a punctured Riemann surface in the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ outer-automorphism twists. We explicitly carry out the classification of these theories in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, and provide tables of properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted punctures. An expression is given for the superconformal index of a fixture with twisted punctures of type $E_6$, which we use to check our identifications. Several of our fixtures have …
We study self-dual SU(N) gauge field configurations on the 4 torus with twisted boundary conditions, known as fractional instantons. Focusing on the minimum non-zero action case, we generalize the constant field strength solutions discovered by `t Hooft and valid for certain geometries. For the general case, we construct the vector potential and field strength in a power series expansion in a deformation parameter of the metric. The next to leading term is explicitly computed. The methodology is an extension of that used by the author for SU(2) fractional instantons and for vortices in two-dim…

We present our study of a set of solutions to the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills equations of motion with fractional topological charge. The configurations are obtained numerically by minimizing the action with gradient flow techniques on a torus of size $l^2\times(Nl)^2$ with twisted boundary conditions. We pay special attention to the large $N$ limit, which is taken along a very peculiar sequence, with the number of colors $N$ and the magnetic flux $m$ selected respectively as the $n$-th and $n-2$ terms of the Fibonacci sequence. We discuss the large $N$ scaling of the solutions and analyze several gaug…
