We show that the centered maximum of a sequence of log-correlated Gaussian fields in any dimension converges in distribution, under the assumption that the covariances of the fields converge in a suitable sense. We identify the limit as a randomly shifted Gumbel distribution, and characterize the random shift as the limit in distribution of a sequence of random variables, reminiscent of the derivative martingale in the theory of Branching Random Walk and Gaussian Chaos. We also discuss applications of the main convergence theorem and discuss examples that show that for logarithmically correlated fields, some additional structural assumptions of the type we make are needed for convergence of the centered maximum.
In this paper we provide an upper bound for the conjunction probability of independent Gaussian smooth processes and then we prove that this bound is a good approximation with exponentially smaller error. Our result confirms the heuristic approximation by Euler characteristic method of Worsley and Friston and also implies the exact value of generalized Pickands constant in a special case. Some results for conjunction probability of correlated processes are also discussed.
We give a non-asymptotic bound on the spectral norm of a $d\times d$ matrix $X$ with centered jointly Gaussian entries in terms of the covariance matrix of the entries. In some cases, this estimate is sharp and removes the $\sqrt{\log d}$ factor in the noncommutative Khintchine inequality.
We consider a family of centered Gaussian fields on the d-dimensional unit box, whose covariance decreases logarithmically in the distance between points. We prove tightness of the recentered maximum of the Gaussian fields and provide exponentially decaying bounds on the right and left tails. We then apply this result to a version of the two-dimensional continuous Gaussian free field.
We study the asymptotic behaviour for asymmetric neuronal dynamics in a network of Hopfield neurons. The randomness in the network is modelled by random couplings which are centered Gaussian correlated random variables. We prove that the annealed law of the empirical measure satisfies a large deviation principle without any condition on time. We prove that the good rate function of this large deviation principle achieves its minimum value at a unique Gaussian measure which is not Markovian. This implies almost sure convergence of the empirical measure under the quenched law. We prove that the …
In this paper, we consider the Gibbs measure associated to a logarithmically correlated random potential (including two dimensional free fields) at low temperature. We prove that the energy landscape freezes and enters in the so-called glassy phase. The limiting Gibbs weights are integrated atomic random measures with random intensity expressed in terms of the critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos. This could be seen as a first rigorous step in the renormalization theory of super-critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos.
We study the distribution of the maximum of a large class of Gaussian fields indexed by a box $V_N\subset Z^d$ and possessing logarithmic correlations up to local defects that are sufficiently rare. Under appropriate assumptions that generalize those in Ding, Roy and Zeitouni (Annals Probab. (45) 2017, 3886-3928), we show that asymptotically, the centered maximum of the field has a randomly-shifted Gumbel distribution. We prove that the two dimensional Gaussian free field on a super-critical bond percolation cluster with $p$ close enough to $1$, as well as the Gaussian free field in i.i.d. bou…
We consider first passage percolation (FPP) where the vertex weight is given by the exponential of two-dimensional log-correlated Gaussian fields. Our work is motivated by understanding the discrete analog for the random metric associated with \emph{Liouville quantum gravity} (LQG), which roughly corresponds to the exponential of a two-dimensional Gaussian free field (GFF). The particular focus of the present paper is an aspect of universality for such FPP among the family of log-correlated Gaussian fields. More precisely, we construct a family of log-correlated Gaussian fields, and show that …
In this paper, we consider the continuous parabolic Anderson model (PAM) driven by a time-independent log-correlated Gaussian field (LGF). We obtain an asymptotic result of $$\mathbb{E}\exp\Bigg\{\frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{ j,k=1}^N\int_0^t\int_0^tγ(B_j(s)-B_k(r))drds\Bigg\}\qquad(N\rightarrow \infty)$$ which is composed of the independent Brownian motions $\{B_j(s)\}$ and the function $γ$ approximating to a logarithmic potential at $0$, such as the covariances of massive free field and Bessel field. Based on the asymptotic result, we get the precise high moment asymptotics for Feynman-Kac formul…
We study non-Gaussian log-correlated multiplicative chaos, where the random field is defined as a sum of independent fields that satisfy suitable moment and regularity conditions. The convergence, existence of moments and analyticity with respect to the inverse temperature are proven for the resulting chaos in the full subcritical range. These results are generalizations of the corresponding theorems for Gaussian multiplicative chaos. A basic example where our results apply is the non-Gaussian Fourier series \[\sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac{1}{\sqrt{k}}(A_k \cos(2πk x) + B_k \sin(2πk x)),\] where $A_…
These notes were written for the mini-course "Extrema of log-correlated random variables: Principles and Examples" at the Introductory School held in January 2015 at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques in Marseille. There have been many advances in the understanding of the high values of log-correlated random fields from the physics and mathematics perspectives in recent years. These fields admit correlations that decay approximately like the logarithm of the inverse of the distance between index points. Examples include branching random walks and the two-dimensional Gaussian …
We study the maximum of a Gaussian field on $[0,1]^\d$ ($\d \geq 1$) whose correlations decay logarithmically with the distance. Kahane \cite{Kah85} introduced this model to construct mathematically the Gaussian multiplicative chaos in the subcritical case. Duplantier, Rhodes, Sheffield and Vargas \cite{DRSV12a} \cite{DRSV12b} extended Kahane's construction to the critical case and established the KPZ formula at criticality. Moreover, they made in \cite{DRSV12a} several conjectures on the supercritical case and on the maximum of this Gaussian field. In this paper we resolve Conjecture 12 in \c…
Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with independent rows $R_1(A),\dots,R_n(A)$, and assume that for any $i\leq n$ and any three-dimensional linear subspace $F\subset {\mathbb R}^n$ the orthogonal projection of $R_i(A)$ onto $F$ has distribution density $ρ(x):F\to{\mathbb R}_+$ satisfying $ρ(x)\leq C_1/\max(1,\|x\|_2^{2000})$ ($x\in F$) for some constant $C_1>0$. We show that for any fixed $n\times n$ real matrix $M$ we have $${\mathbb P}\{s_{\min}(A+M)\leq t n^{-1/2}\}\leq C'\, t,\quad\quad t>0,$$ where $C'>0$ is a universal constant. In particular, the above result holds if the rows of $…
We investigate an additive perturbation of a complex Wishart random matrix and prove that a large deviation principle holds for the spectral measures. The rate function is associated to a vector equilibrium problem coming from logarithmic potential theory, which in our case is a quadratic map involving the logarithmic energies, or Voiculescu's entropies, of two measures in the presence of an external field and an upper constraint. The proof is based on a two type particles Coulomb gas representation for the eigenvalue distribution, which gives a new insight on why such variational problems sho…
We survey the properties of the log-correlated Gaussian field (LGF), which is a centered Gaussian random distribution (generalized function) $h$ on $\mathbb R^d$, defined up to a global additive constant. Its law is determined by the covariance formula $$\mathrm{Cov}\bigl[ (h, ϕ_1), (h, ϕ_2) \bigr] = \int_{\mathbb R^d \times \mathbb R^d} -\log|y-z| ϕ_1(y) ϕ_2(z)dydz$$ which holds for mean-zero test functions $ϕ_1, ϕ_2$. The LGF belongs to the larger family of fractional Gaussian fields obtained by applying fractional powers of the Laplacian to a white noise $W$ on $\mathbb R^d$. It takes the f…
We consider Boltzmann-Gibbs measures associated with log-correlated Gaussian fields as potentials and study their multifractal properties which exhibit phase transitions. In particular, the pre-freezing and freezing phenomena of the annealed exponent, predicted by Fyodorov using a modified replica-symmetry-breaking ansatz, are generalised to arbitrary dimension and verified using results from Gaussian multiplicative chaos theory.
We compute the leading asymptotics as $N\to\infty$ of the maximum of the field $Q_N(q)= \log\det|q- A_N|$, $q\in \mathbb{C}$, for any unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrix $A_N$ associated to a non-critical real-analytic potential. Hence, we verify the leading order in a conjecture of Fyodorov and Simm formulated for the GUE. The method relies on a classical upper-bound and a more sophisticated lower-bound based on a variant of the second-moment method which exploits the hyperbolic branching structure of the field $Q_N(q)$, $q$ in the upper half plane. Specifically, we compare $Q_N$ to a…
We prove that multiplicative chaos measures can be constructed from extreme level sets or thick points of the underlying logarithmically correlated field. We develop a method which covers the whole subcritical phase and only requires asymptotics of suitable exponential moments for the field. As an application, we establish these estimates hold for the logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a Haar distributed random unitary matrix (CUE), using known asymptotics for Toeplitz determinant with (merging) Fisher-Hartwig singularities. Hence, this proves a conjecture of F…
We establish two-sided bounds for expectations of order statistics ($k$-th maxima) of moduli of coordinates of centered log-concave random vectors with uncorrelated coordinates. Our bounds are exact up to multiplicative universal constants in the unconditional case for all $k$ and in the isotropic case for $k \leq n-cn^{5/6}$. We also derive two-sided estimates for expectations of sums of $k$ largest moduli of coordinates for some classes of random vectors.
We consider a logarithmically correlated random energy model, namely a model for directed polymers on a Cayley tree, which was introduced by Derrida and Spohn. We prove asymptotic properties of a generating function of the partition function of the model by studying a discrete time analogy of the KPP-equation - thus translating Bramson's work on the KPP-equation into a discrete time case. We also discuss connections to extreme value statistics of a branching random walk and a rescaled multiplicative cascade measure beyond the critical point.
We review recent progress relating to the extreme value statistics of the characteristic polynomials of random matrices associated with the classical compact groups, and of the Riemann zeta-function and other $L$-functions, in the context of the general theory of logarithmically-correlated Gaussian fields. In particular, we focus on developments related to the conjectures of Fyodorov \& Keating concerning the extreme value statistics, moments of moments, connections to Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos, and explicit formulae derived from the theory of symmetric functions.
In recent work, Fyodorov and Keating conjectured the maximum size of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ in a typical interval of length O(1) on the critical line. They did this by modelling the zeta function by the characteristic polynomial of a random matrix; relating the random matrix problem to another problem from statistical mechanics; and applying a heuristic analysis of that problem. In this note we recover a conjecture like that of Fyodorov and Keating, but using a different model for $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ in terms of a random Euler product. In this case the probabilistic model reduces to studying the supremum of …
In this article we establish novel decompositions of Gaussian fields taking values in suitable spaces of generalized functions, and then use these decompositions to prove results about Gaussian multiplicative chaos. We prove two decomposition theorems. The first one is a global one and says that if the difference between the covariance kernels of two Gaussian fields, taking values in some Sobolev space, has suitable Sobolev regularity, then these fields differ by a Hölder continuous Gaussian process. Our second decomposition theorem is more specialized and is in the setting of Gaussian fields …
Let $X_n(k)$ be the number of vertices at level $k$ in a random recursive tree with $n+1$ vertices. We are interested in the asymptotic behavior of $X_n(k)$ for intermediate levels $k=k_n$ satisfying $k_n\to\infty$ and $k_n=o(\log n)$ as $n\to\infty$. In particular, we prove weak convergence of finite-dimensional distributions for the process $(X_n ([k_n u]))_{u>0}$, properly normalized and centered, as $n\to\infty$. The limit is a centered Gaussian process with covariance $(u,v)\mapsto (u+v)^{-1}$. One-dimensional distributional convergence of $X_n(k_n)$, properly normalized and centered, was…
We study the statistics of the extremes of a discrete Gaussian field with logarithmic correlations at the level of the Gibbs measure. The model is defined on the periodic interval $[0,1]$, and its correlation structure is nonhierarchical. It is based on a model introduced by Bacry and Muzy [Comm. Math. Phys. 236 (2003) 449-475] (see also Barral and Mandelbrot [Probab. Theory Related Fields 124 (2002) 409-430]), and is similar to the logarithmic Random Energy Model studied by Carpentier and Le Doussal [Phys. Rev. E (3) 63 (2001) 026110] and more recently by Fyodorov and Bouchaud [J. Phys. A 41 …

Many low temperature disordered systems are expected to exhibit Poisson-Dirichlet (PD) statistics. In this paper, we focus on the case when the underlying disorder is a logarithmically correlated Gaussian process $ϕ_N$ on the box $[-N,N]^d\subset\mathbb{Z}^d$. Canonical examples include branching random walk, $*$-scale invariant fields, with the central example being the two dimensional Gaussian free field (GFF), a universal scaling limit of a wide range of statistical mechanics models. The corresponding Gibbs measure obtained by exponentiating $β$ (inverse temperature) times $ϕ_N$ is a discre…
We investigate the race between prime numbers in many residue classes modulo $q$, assuming the standard conjectures GRH and LI. Among our results we exhibit, for the first time, prime races modulo $q$ with $n$ competitor classes where the biases do not dissolve when $n, q\to \infty$. We also study the leaders in the prime number race, obtaining asymptotic formulae for logarithmic densities when the number of competitors can be as large as a power of $q$, whereas previous methods could only allow a power of $\log q$. The proofs use harmonic analysis related to the Hardy--Littlewood circle metho…
In this article, we study the fluctuations of the random variable: $$ {\mathcal I}_n(ρ) = \frac 1N \log\det(Σ_n Σ_n^* + ρI_N),\quad (ρ>0) $$ where $Σ_n= n^{-1/2} D_n^{1/2} X_n\tilde D_n^{1/2} +A_n$, as the dimensions of the matrices go to infinity at the same pace. Matrices $X_n$ and $A_n$ are respectively random and deterministic $N\times n$ matrices; matrices $D_n$ and $\tilde D_n$ are deterministic and diagonal, with respective dimensions $N\times N$ and $n\times n$; matrix $X_n=(X_{ij})$ has centered, independent and identically distributed entries with unit variance, either real or comple…
We study three instances of log-correlated processes on the interval: the logarithm of the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) characteristic polynomial, the Gaussian log-correlated potential in presence of edge charges, and the Fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H \to 0$ (fBM0). In previous collaborations we obtained the probability distribution function (PDF) of the value of the global minimum (equivalently maximum) for the first two processes, using the {\it freezing-duality conjecture} (FDC). Here we study the PDF of the position of the maximum $x_m$ through its moments. Using replic…
We consider global fluctuations of the spectrum of the GUE. Using results on the linear statistics of such matrices as well as variance bounds on the eigenvalues, we show that under a suitable scaling, global fluctuations of the spectrum can be asymptotically described in terms of a logarithmically correlated Gaussian field. We also discuss briefly connections between different objects in RMT giving rise to log-correlated fields: the logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial, the eigenvalue counting function, and the field of fluctuations of the eigenvalues around their …
