The impact of current on static and kinetic depinning fields of a domain wall in an one dimensional ferromagnetic nanostrip is investigated by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin-transfer torques analytically and numerically. The results show that in the absence of current, the static depinning field is greater than the kinetic depinning field and both the depinning fields decrease by the increase of current applied in a direction opposite to the direction of the applied field. Both the depinning fields can also be tuned by the current to make them equal.
We present an analytical theory of domain wall tilt due to a transverse in-plane magnetic field in a ferromagnetic nanostrip with out-of-plane anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The theory treats the domain walls as one-dimensional objects with orientation-dependent energy, which interact with the sample edges. We show that under an applied field the domain wall remains straight, but tilts at an angle to the direction of the magnetic field that is proportional to the field strength for moderate fields and sufficiently strong DMI. Furthermore, we obtain a nonlinear dependen…
The domain wall depinning from a notch in a Permalloy nanostrip on top of a ${\rm SiO_2/Si}$ substrate is studied theoretically under application of static magnetic fields and the injection of short current pulses. The influence of Joule heating on current-induced domain wall depinning is explored self-consistently by coupling the magnetization dynamics in the ferromagnetic strip to the heat transport throughout the system. Our results indicate that Joule heating plays a remarkable role in these processes, resulting in a reduction in the critical depinning field and/or in a temporary destructi…
We show that the coupling between two ferromagnetic layers separated by a nonmagnetic spacer can be used to control the depinning of domain walls and induce unidirectional domain wall propagation. We investigated CoFeB/Ti/CoFeB trilayers where the easy axis of the magnetization of the top CoFeB layer is out-of-plane and that of the bottom layer is in-plane. Using Magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy, we find that the depinning of a domain wall in the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer is influenced by the orientation of the magnetization of the in-plane layer, which gives rise to a field-d…
We study the effect of disorder on the dynamics of a transverse domain wall in ferromagnetic nanostrips, driven either by magnetic fields or spin-polarized currents, by performing a large ensemble of GPU-accelerated micromagnetic simulations. Disorder is modeled by including small, randomly distributed non-magnetic voids in the system. Studying the domain wall velocity as a function of the applied field and current density reveals fundamental differences in the domain wall dynamics induced by these two modes of driving: For the field-driven case, we identify two different domain wall pinning m…
We express dynamics of domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires in terms of collective coordinates generalizing Thiele's steady-state results. For weak external perturbations the dynamics is dominated by a few soft modes. The general approach is illustrated on the example of a vortex wall relevant to recent experiments with flat nanowires. A two-mode approximation gives a quantitatively accurate description of both the steady viscous motion of the wall in weak magnetic fields and its oscillatory behavior in moderately high fields above the Walker breakdown.
The non-uniform standing spin-wave modes in thin magnetic films and nanostructures provide important information about surfaces and buried interfaces. Very often they are lacking in the recorded ferromagnetic resonance spectra for symmetry reasons. In this work we experimentally demonstrate that by direct injection of microwave currents into an array of Permalloy nanostripes using a microscopic microwave coaxial to coplanar adaptor one can efficiently excite non-uniform standing spin wave modes with odd symmetry. The proposed method is quick and allows easy spatial mapping of magnetic properti…
We report bulk magnetization measurements and spatially resolved measurements of magnetic domains in Co3Sn2S2 single crystals. The results indicate that a previously reported magnetic anomaly around 130 K is due to an anomalous domain wall depinning upon cooling. Our measurements also reveal a hysteresis between field-cooled-cooling (FCC) and field-cooled-warming (FCW) magnetization curves acquired under a constant magnetic field below 300 Oe. This observation rules out the possibility that the anomaly stems from a second-order phase transition. Our results further suggest that changes in the …
In this report we demonstrate a simple model for the motion of a vortex domain wall in a ferromagnetic strip of submicron width under the influence of an external magnetic field. The model exhibits three distinct dynamical regimes. In a viscous regime at low fields the wall moves rigidly with a velocity proportional to the field. Above a critical field the motion becomes underdamped as the vortex moves periodically across the strip; these oscillations are accompanied by a slow drift with a decreasing velocity. At still higher fields the drift velocity starts rising linearly with the field agai…
We study the dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall driven by an external magnetic field through a disordered medium. The avalanche-like motion of the domain walls between pinned configurations produces a noise known as the Barkhausen effect. We discuss experimental results on soft ferromagnetic materials, with reference to the domain structure and the sample geometry, and report Barkhausen noise measurements on Fe$_{21}$Co$_{64}$B$_{15}$ amorphous alloy. We construct an equation of motion for a flexible domain wall, which displays a depinning transition as the field is increased. The long-ra…
An anomalous distortion is often observed in the transfer characteristics of graphene field-effect transistors. We fabricate graphene transistors with ferromagnetic metal electrodes, which reproducibly display distorted transfer characteristics, and show that the distortion is caused by metal-graphene contacts with no charge-density pinning effect. The pinning effect, where the gate voltage cannot tune the charge density of graphene at the metal electrodes, has been experimentally observed; however, a pinning-free interface is achieved with easily-oxidizable metals. The distortion should be a …
The motion of a vortex domain wall in a ferromagnetic strip of submicron width under the influence of an external magnetic field exhibits three distinct dynamical regimes. In a viscous regime at low fields the wall moves rigidly with a velocity proportional to the field. Above a critical field the viscous motion breaks down giving way to oscillations accompanied by a slow drift of the wall. At still higher fields the drift velocity starts rising with the field again but with a much lower mobility dv/dH than in the viscous regime. To describe the dynamics of the wall we use the method of collec…
We demonstrate optical manipulation of the position of a domain wall in a dilute magnetic semiconductor, GaMnAsP. Two main contributions are identified. Firstly, photocarrier spin exerts a spin transfer torque on the magnetization via the exchange interaction. The direction of the domain wall motion can be controlled using the helicity of the laser. Secondly, the domain wall is attracted to the hot-spot generated by the focused laser. Unlike magnetic field driven domain wall depinning, these mechanisms directly drive domain wall motion, providing an optical tweezer like ability to position and…
In this work we carried out systematic experimental and theoretical investigations of the ferromagnetic (FMR) response of quasi-two-dimensional magnetic nano-objects - microscopically long nanostripes made of ferromagentic metals. We were interested in the impact of the symmetries of this geometry on the FMR response. Three possible scenarios, from which the inversion symmetry break originated, were investigated:(1) from the shape of the stripe cross-section, (2) from the double-layer structure of the stripes with exchange coupling between the layers, and (3) from the single-side incidence of …
We report the results of micromagnetic simulations of domain wall (DW) nucleation and pinning/depinning processes in ferromagnetic planar structure consisting of nanowire (NW) with perpendicular anisotropy and special V-shaped nanoparticle (NP) with in-plane anisotropy located on top of NW. The magnetization reversal features of this system in an external magnetic field are investigated depending on the direction of particle magnetic moment. Possible variants of magnetic logic cells (LCs) based on such system are discussed.
We study field-induced domain wall motion in permalloy nanowires with vertically etched nanotrench pinning site. Micromagnetic simulations and electrical measurements are employed to characterize the pinning potential at the nanotrench. It is found that the potential profile for a transverse wall significantly differs from that of a vortex wall, and there is a correlation between the pinning strength and the potential profile. Reliable domain wall pinning and depinning is experimentally observed from a nanotrench in permalloy nanowires. This demonstrates the suitability of the proposed nanotre…
We derive an equation of motion for the the dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall driven by an external magnetic field through a disordered medium and we study the associated depinning transition. The long-range dipolar interactions set the upper critical dimension to be $d_c=3$, so we suggest that mean-field exponents describe the Barkhausen effect for three-dimensional soft ferromagnetic materials. We analyze the scaling of the Barkhausen jumps as a function of the field driving rate and the intensity of the demagnetizing field, and find results in quantitative agreement with experiments o…
Recent studies have predicted extraordinary properties for transverse domain walls in cylindrical nanowires: zero depinning current, the absence of the Walker breakdown, and applications as domain wall oscillators. In order to reliably control the domain wall motion, it is important to understand how they interact with energy barriers. In this paper, we study the motion and depinning of transverse domain walls through potential barriers in ferromagnetic cylindrical nanowires. We use magnetic fields and spin-polarized currents to drive the domain walls along the wire. Using magnetic fields, we …
We study the geometrical conditions for stabilizing magnetic skyrmions in cylindrical nanostrips and nanotubes of ferromagnetic materials with chiral interactions. We obtain the low-temperature equilibrium state of the system implementing a simulation annealing technique for a classical spin Hamiltonian with competing isotropic exchange and chiral interactions, radial anisotropy and an external field. We address the impact of surface curvature on the formation, the shape and the size of magnetic skyrmions. We demonstrate that the evolution of the skyrmion phase with the curvature is controlled…
Magnetic field-driven domain wall motion in an ultrathin Pt/Co(0.45nm)/Pt ferromagnetic film with perpendicular anisotropy is studied over a wide temperature range. Three different pinning dependent dynamical regimes are clearly identified: the creep, the thermally assisted flux flow and the depinning, as well as their corresponding crossovers. The wall elastic energy and microscopic parameters characterizing the pinning are determined. Both the extracted thermal rounding exponent at the depinning transition, $ψ=$0.15, and the Larkin length crossover exponent, $ϕ=$0.24, fit well with the numer…
We combine magneto-optical imaging and a magnetic field pulse technique to study domain wall dynamics in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layer with perpendicular easy axis. Contrary to ultrathin metallic layers, the depinning field is found to be smaller than the Walker field, thereby allowing for the observation of the steady and precessional flow regimes. The domain wall width and damping parameters are determined self-consistently. The damping, 30 times larger than the one deduced from ferromagnetic resonance, is shown to essentially originate from the non-conservation of the magnetization modulu…
We report that by measuring current-induced hysteresis loop shift versus in-plane bias magnetic field, the spin Hall effect (SHE) contribution of the current-induced effective field per current density, $χ_{SHE}$, can be estimated for Pt and Ta-based magnetic heterostructures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). We apply this technique to a Pt-based sample with its ferromagnetic (FM) layer being wedged-deposited and discover an extra effective field contribution, $χ_{Wedged}$, due to the asymmetric nature of the deposited FM layer. We confirm the correlation between $χ_{Wedged}$ and t…
The propagation of a domain wall in a submicron ferromagnetic spin-valve stripe is investigated using giant magnetoresistance. A notch in the stripe efficiently traps an injected wall stopping the domain propagation. The authors show that the magnetic field at which the wall is depinned displays a stochastic nature. Moreover, the depinning statistics are significantly different for head to head and tail-to-tail domain walls. This is attributed to the dipolar field generated in the vicinity of the notch by the pinned layer of the spin-valve.
Graphene field-effect transistors with source/drain contacts made of metals that can be easily oxidized such as ferromagnetic metals often display a double dip structure in the transfer characteristics because of charge density depinning at the contacts. Generally, transfer characteristics of field-effect transistors show no dependence on the length of the source/drain contacts because charge carrier injection occurs mainly at the edges of the contact. However, the shape of the transfer characteristics of devices fabricated using Ni contacts is found to be dependent on the length of the contac…
We explore universal behaviors of magnetic domain wall driven by the spin-transfer of an electrical current, in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)(As,P) thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. For a current direction transverse to domain wall, the dynamics of the thermally activated creep regime and the depinning transition are found to be compatible with a self-consistent universal description of magnetic field induced domain wall dynamics. This common universal behavior, characteristic of the so-called quenched Edwards-Wilkinson universality class, is confirmed by a complementary and independ…
The motion of a domain wall in a two dimensional medium is studied taking into account the internal elastic degrees of freedom of the wall and geometrical pinning produced both by holes and sample boundaries. This study is used to analyze the geometrical conditions needed for optimizing crossed ratchet effects in periodic rectangular arrays of asymmetric holes, recently observed experimentally in patterned ferromagnetic films. Geometrical calculations and numerical simulations have been used to obtain the anisotropic critical fields for depinning flat and kinked walls in rectangular arrays of …
The recent isolation of two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials has uncovered rich physics that often differs from the magnetic behaviour of their bulk counterparts. However, the microscopic details of fundamental processes such as the initial magnetization or domain reversal, which govern the magnetic hysteresis, remain largely unknown in the ultrathin limit. Here we employ a widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) microscope to directly image these processes in few-layer flakes of magnetic semiconductor vanadium triiodide (VI$_3$). We observe complete and abrupt switching of most flakes at …
Chiral domain walls in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetised layers have a Néel structure stabilised by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that is generated at the interface between the ferromagnet and a heavy metal. Different heavy metals are required above and below a ferromagnetic film in order to generate the structural inversion asymmetry needed to ensure that the DMI arising at the two interfaces does not cancel. Here we report on the magnetic properties of epitaxial Pt/Co/Au$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ trilayers grown by sputtering onto sapphire substrates with 0.6 nm thick Co. As $x$ rises fro…
The dynamics of transverse Neel domain wall in a ferromagnetic nanostrip in the presence of driving field, current and transverse magnetic field is investigated by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert(LLG) equation with the adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin-transfer torques both analytically and numerically. The analytical expressions for the velocity, width, excitation angle and displacement for the domain wall are obtained by using small angle approximation along with Walkers trial function. The results show that the initial velocity of the domain wall can be controlled by the adiabatic spin-transfer …
