Ricci-flat spacetimes of signature (2,q) with q=2,3,4 are constructed which admit irreducible Killing tensors of rank-3 or rank-4. The construction relies upon the Eisenhart lift applied to Drach's two-dimensional integrable systems which is followed by the oxidation with respect to free parameters. In four dimensions, some of our solutions are anti-self-dual.
We obtain all the three-dimensional Lorentzian metrics which admit three Killing vectors. The classification has been done with the aid of the formalism which exploits the obstruction criteria for the Killing equations recently developed by present authors. The current classification method does not rely on the transitivity property of the isometry group. It turns out that the Lorentzian manifold harbors a much richer spectrum of metrics with various Segre types, compared to the Riemannian case.
It is shown that given an analytic Lorentzian metric on a 4-manifold, $g$, which admits two Killing vector fields, then it exists a local deformation law $η= a g + b H$, where $H$ is a 2-dimensional projector, such that $η$ is flat and admits the same Killing vectors. We also characterize the particular case when the projector $H$ coincides with the quotient metric. We apply some of our results to general stationary axisymmetric spacetimes
BPS black hole configurations which break half of supersymmetry in the theory of N=2, d=5 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets are discussed. A general class of solutions comprising all known BPS rotating black hole solutions is obtained.
Methods are presented for finding Killing-Yano tensors, conformal Killing-Yano tensors, and conformal Killing vectors in spacetimes with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. These methods are similar to a method developed by the authors for finding Killing tensors. In all cases one decomposes both the tensor and the equation it satisfies into pieces along the Killing vector and pieces orthogonal to the Killing vector. Solving the separate equations that result from this decomposition requires less computing than integrating the original equation. In each case, examples are given to illust…
By applying the lightlike Eisenhart lift to several known examples of low-dimensional integrable systems admitting integrals of motion of higher-order in momenta, we obtain four- and higher-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes with irreducible higher-rank Killing tensors. Such metrics, we believe, are first examples of spacetimes admitting higher-rank Killing tensors. Included in our examples is a four-dimensional supersymmetric pp-wave spacetime, whose geodesic flow is superintegrable. The Killing tensors satisfy a non-trivial Poisson-Schouten-Nijenhuis algebra. We discuss the extension to the q…
We demonstrate how a combination of our recently developed methods of partner symmetries, symmetry reduction in group parameters and a new version of the group foliation method can produce noninvariant solutions of complex Monge-Ampère equation (CMA) and provide a lift from invariant solutions of CMA satisfying Boyer-Finley equation to non-invariant ones. Applying these methods, we obtain a new noninvariant solution of CMA and the corresponding Ricci-flat anti-self-dual Einstein-Kähler metric with Euclidean signature without Killing vectors, together with Riemannian curvature two-forms. There …
The complex Monge-Ampère equation $(CMA)$ in a two-component form is treated as a bi-Hamiltonian system. I present explicitly the first nonlocal symmetry flow in each of the two hierarchies of this system. An invariant solution of $CMA$ with respect to these nonlocal symmetries is constructed which, being a noninvariant solution in the usual sense, does not undergo symmetry reduction in the number of independent variables. I also construct the corresponding 4-dimensional anti-self-dual (ASD) Ricci-flat metric with either Euclidean or neutral signature. It admits no Killing vectors which is one…
A possible generalization of plane fronted waves with parallel rays (gpp-wave) fall into a more general class of metrics admitting parallel null 1-planes. For gpp-wave metric, the zero-curvature condition is given, the Killing-Yano tensors of order two and three are found and the corresponding Killing tensors are constructed. Henceforth, the compatibility between geometric duality and non-generic symmetries is presented.
It is believed that in any number of dimensions the off-shell Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric represents a unique geometry admitting the principal (rank 2, non-degenerate, closed conformal Killing-Yano) tensor. The original proof relied on the Euclidean signature and therein natural assumption that the eigenvalues of the principal tensor have gradients of spacelike character. In this paper we evade this common wisdom and construct new classes of Lorentzian (and other signature) off-shell metrics admitting the principal tensor with null eigenvalues, uncovering so a much richer structure of spacetimes wit…
It is commonly known that Killing vectors and tensors are in one-to-one correspondence with polynomial first integrals of the geodesic equation. In this work, metrics admitting nonpolynomial first integrals of the geodesic equation are constructed, each of which revealing a chain of generalised Killing vectors.
In this paper we initiate a classification of local metrics admitting the principal Killing--Yano tensor with a skew-symmetric torsion. It is demonstrated that in such spacetimes rank-2 Killing tensors occur naturally and mutually commute. We reduce the classification problem to that of solving a set of partial differential equations, and we present some solutions to these PDEs. In even dimensions, three types of local metrics are obtained: one of them naturally generalizes the torsionless case while the others occur only when the torsion is present. In odd dimensions, we obtain more varieties…
When Morris and Thorne first proposed that traversable wormholes may be actual physical objects, they concentrated on the geometry by specifying the shape and redshift functions. This mathematical approach necessarily raises questins regarding the determination of the required stress-energy tensor. This paper discusses a natural way to obtain a complete wormhole solution by assuming that the wormhole (1) is supported by generalized Chaplygin gas and (2) admits conformal Killing vectors.
Killing vector fields in three dimensions play important role in the construction of the related spacetime geometry. In this work we show that when a three dimensional geometry admits a Killing vector field then the Ricci tensor of the geometry is determined in terms of the Killing vector field and its scalars. In this way we can generate all products and covariant derivatives at any order of the ricci tensor. Using this property we give ways of solving the field equations of Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) and New Massive Gravity (NMG) introduced recently. In particular when the scalars o…
Non-conformally flat space-times admitting a non-null Killing spinor of valence two are investigated in the Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism. Contrary to popular belief these space-times are not all explicitly known. It is shown that the standard construction hinges on the tacit assumption that certain integrability conditions hold, implying two algebraic relations, KS1 and KS2, for the spin coefficients and the components of the Ricci spinor. An exhaustive list of (conformal classes of) space-times, in which either KS1 or KS2 are violated, is presented. The resulting space-times are each other's…
I present a complete list of hypersurface homogeneous space-times admitting a non-null valence two Killing spinor, including a new class admitting only exceptional Killing tensors. A connection is established with the classification of locally rotationally symmetric or boost symmetric space-times.
The gravitational collapse of a spherical distribution, in a class of f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is power function of R, is discussed. The spacetime is assumed to admit a homothetic Killing vector. In the collapsing modes, some of the situations indeed hit a singularity, but they are all covered with an apparent horizon. Some peculiar cases are observed where the collapsing body settles to a constant radius at a given value of the radial coordinate.
We carry on a general study on non--static spherically symmetric fluids admitting a conformal Killing vector (CKV). Several families of exact analytical solutions are found for different choices of the CKV, in both, the dissipative and the adiabatic regime. To specify the solutions, besides the fulfillment of the junction conditions on the boundary of the fluid distribution, different conditions are imposed, such as vanishing complexity factor and quasi--homologous evolution. A detailed analysis of the obtained solutions, its prospective applications to astrophysical scenarios, as well as alte…
We discuss the interior solutions of fluid Sphere in f(R,T) gravity admitting conformal killing vectors, where R is Ricci scalar and T is trace of energy momentum tensor. The solutions corresponding to isotropic and anisotropic configurations have been investigated explicitly. Further, the anisotropic case has been dealt by the utilization of linear equation of state. The results for both cases have been interpreted graphically. The equation of state parameter, integration constants and other parameters of the theory have been chosen to find the central density equal to standard value of centr…
We consider 3D flow equations inspired by the renormalization group (RG) equations of string theory with a three dimensional target space. By modifying the flow equations to include a U(1) gauge field, and adding carefully chosen De Turck terms, we are able to extend recent 2D results of Bakas to the case of a 3D Riemannian metric with one Killing vector. In particular, we show that the RG flow with De Turck terms can be reduced to two equations: the continual Toda flow solved by Bakas, plus its linearizaton. We find exact solutions which flow to homogeneous but not always isotropic geometries…
We consider the 3-dimensional formulation of Einstein's theory for spacetimes possessing a non-null Killing field $ξ^a$. It is known that for the vacuum case some of the basic field equations are deducible from the others. It will be shown here how this result can be generalized for the case of essentially arbitrary matter fields. The systematic study of the structure of the fundamental field equations is carried out. In particular, the existence of geometrically preferred reference systems is shown. Using local coordinates of this type two approaches are presented resulting resolvent systems …
Einstein complex spacetimes admitting null Killing or null homothetic Killing vectors are studied. These vectors define totally null and geodesic 2-surfaces called the null strings or twistor surfaces. Geometric properties of these null strings are discussed. It is shown, that spaces considered are hyperheavenly spaces (HH-spaces) or, if one of the parts of the Weyl tensor vanishes, heavenly spaces (H-spaces). The explicit complex metrics admitting null Killing vectors are found. Some Lorentzian and ultrahyperbolic slices of these metrics are discussed.
We consider source-free electromagnetic fields in spacetimes possessing a non-null Killing vector field, $ξ^a$. We assume further that the electromagnetic field tensor, $F_{ab}$, is invariant under the action of the isometry group induced by $ξ^a$. It is proved that whenever the two potentials associated with the electromagnetic field are functionally independent the entire content of Maxwell's equations is equivalent to the relation $\n^aT_{ab}=0$. Since this relation is implied by Einstein's equation we argue that it is enough to solve merely Einstein's equation for these electrovac spacetim…
We examine, in a purely geometrical way, static Ricci-flat 5-manifolds admitting the 2-sphere and an additional hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector. These are widely studied in the literature, from different physical approaches, and known variously as the Kramer - Gross - Perry - Davidson - Owen solutions. The 2-fold infinity of cases that result are studied by way of new coordinates (which are in most cases global) and the cases likely to be of interest in any physical approach are distinguished on the basis of the nakedness and geometrical mass of their associated singularities. It is arg…
It is well known that every Killing vector is a Ricci and Matter collineation. Therefore the metric, the Ricci tensor and the energy-momentum tensor are all members of a large family of second order symmetric tensors which are invariant under a common group of symmetries. This family is described by a generic metric which is defined from the symmetry group of the space-time metric. The proper Ricci and Matter (inheritance) collineations are the (conformal) Killing vectors of the generic metric which are not (conformal) Killing vectors of the space-time metric. Using this observation we compute…
The conditions for the existence of Killing-Yano tensors, which are closely related to the appearance of non-generic world-line SUSY, are presented for static axisymmetric spacetimes. Imposing the vacuum Einstein equation, the set of solutions admitting Killing-Yano tensors is considered. In particular, it is shown that static, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat vacuum solutions admitting Killing-Yano tensors are only the Schwarzschild solution.
New solutions for $(2+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell space-time are found for a static spherically symmetric charged fluid distribution with the additional condition of allowing conformal killing vectors (CKV). We discuss physical properties of the fluid parameters. Moreover, it is shown that the model actually represents two structures, namely (i) Gravastar as an alternative of black hole and (ii) Electromagnetic Mass model depending on the nature of the equation state of the fluid. Here the gravitational mass originates from electromagnetic field alone. The solutions are matched with the e…
We perform a complete rho-integration of the GHP equations for all spacetimes that admit a geodesic shear-free expanding null congruence, whose Ricci spinor is aligned to the congruence and whose Ricci scalar is constant. We also deduce the system of GHP equations after the integration is completed, and discuss a few applications.
We analyze the space-times admitting two shear-free geodesic null congruences. The integrability conditions are presented in a plain tensorial way as equations on the volume element $U$ of the time-like 2--plane that these directions define. From these we easily deduce significant consequences. We obtain explicit expressions for the Ricci and Weyl tensors in terms of $U$ and its first and second order covariant derivatives. We study the different compatible Petrov-Bel types and give the necessary and sufficient conditions that characterize every type in terms of $U$. The type D case is analyze…
We formulate several criteria under which the symmetries associated with the Killing and Killing-Yano tensors on the base space can be lifted to the symmetries of the full warped geometry. The procedure is explicitly illustrated on several examples, providing new prototypes of spacetimes admitting such tensors. In particular, we study a warped product of two Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes and show that it gives rise to a new class of highly symmetric vacuum (with cosmological constant) black hole solutions that inherit many of the properties of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS geometry.
A geometric formulation of the Lax pair equation on a curved manifold is studied using phase space formalism. The corresponding (covariantly conserved) Lax tensor is defined and the method of generation of constants of motion from it is discussed. It is shown that when the Hamilton equations of motion are used, the conservation of the Lax tensor translates directly to the well known Lax pair equation, with one matrix identified with components of the Lax tensor and the other matrix constructed from the (metric) connection. A generalization to Clifford objects is also discussed. Nontrivial exam…

We study the space-times admitting a null conformal Killing-Yano tensor whose divergence defines a Killing vector. We analyze the similitudes and differences with the recently studied non null case (Gen. Relativ. Grav. (2015) {\bf 47} 1911). The results by Barnes concerning the Birkhoff theorem for the case of null orbits are analyzed and generalized.
The properties of a Killing-Yano tensor of order n-1 in an n-dimensional manifold are investigated. The integrability conditions are worked out and all metrics admitting a Killing-Yano tensor of order n-1 are found. It is pointed out a connection between such tensors and a generalization of the concept of angular momentum. A theorem on how to generate closed conformal Killing vectors using the symmetries of a manifold is proved and used to find all Killing-Yano tensors of order n-1 of a maximally symmetric space.
We present a brief overview of black hole spacetimes admitting Killing-Yano tensors. In vacuum these include Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics and certain black brane solutions. In the presence of matter fields, (conformal) Killing-Yano symmetries are known to exist for the Plebanski-Demianski solution and (trivially) for any spacetime with spherical symmetry. Special attention is devoted to generalized Killing-Yano tensors of black holes in minimal gauged supergravity. Several aspects directly related to the existence of Killing-Yano tensors, such as the Kerr-Schild form, algebraic type of spacetimes, a…
We devise an algorithm which allows one to count the number of Killing vectors for a Lorentzian manifold of dimension 3. Our algorithm relies on the principal traces of powers of the Ricci tensor and branches intricately according to the values of differential invariants arising from the compatibility conditions of the Killing equation. As illustrating examples, we classify the Lifshitz and pp-wave spacetimes into a hierarchy based on their level of symmetry. A complete classification of spacetimes admitting 4 Killing vectors is also presented.
We consider three-dimensional Lorentzian metrics that locally admit four independent Killing vectors. Their classification is summarized, and conditions for characterizing them are found. These consist of algebraic classification of the traceless Ricci tensor, and other conditions satisfied by the curvature and its derivative.
Spherically symmetric solutions admitting a homothetic Killing vector field (HKVF) either orthogonal, $η_{\bot}$, or parallel,$η_{||}$, to the 4-velocity vector field, $u^a$, are studied. New self-similar solution of Einstein's field equation is found in the case when HKVF is in a general form. Some physical properties of the obtained solution are examined.
We consider space-times which in addition to admitting an isolated horizon also admit Killing horizons with or without an event horizon. We show that an isolated horizon is a Killing horizon provided either (1) it admits a stationary neighbourhood or (2) it admits a neighbourhood with two independent, commuting Killing vectors. A Killing horizon is always an isolated horizon. For the case when an event horizon is definable, all conceivable relative locations of isolated horizon and event horizons are possible. Corresponding conditions are given.
In this paper, we investigate conformal Killing's vectors (CKVs) admitted by some plane symmetric spacetimes. Ten conformal Killing's equations and their general forms of CKVs are derived along with their conformal factor. The existence of conformal Killing's symmetry imposes restrictions on the metric functions. The conditions imposing restrictions on these metric functions are obtained as a set of integrability conditions. Considering the cases of time-like and inheriting CKVs, we obtain spacetimes admitting plane conformal symmetry. Integrability conditions are solved completely for some kn…
We discuss novel generalisations of Killing tensors, which are introduced by considering rational first integrals of geodesic equations. We introduce the notion of inconstructible generalised Killing tensors, which cannot be constructed from ordinary Killing tensors. Moreover, we introduce inconstructible rational first integrals, which are constructed from inconstructible generalised Killing tensors, and provide a method for checking the inconstructibility of a rational first integral. Using the method, we show that the rational first integral of the Collinson-O'Donnell solution is not incons…
We revise and generalize the properties of the electric and the magnetic scalar potentials in spacetimes admitting a Killing vector field: Their constancy on the Killing horizons, uniqueness of solution for the electromagnetic test fields and the relation between the Bianchi identity and Maxwell's equations. In each of these examples, collinearity of currents with the Killing vector field is shown to be the crucial property.
We consider the kinematics of specific fluid spacetimes admitting timelike congruences of Ricci Solitons. These fluids includes string cloud, string fluid, perfect fluid, radially symmetric fluid, anisotropic fluid and relativistic magneto-fluid. Results are obtained and important physical aspects are discussed.
We describe a framework for constructing the Ricci-flat metrics on the total space of the canonical bundle over $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ (the del Pezzo surface of rank one). We construct explicitly the first-order deformation of the so-called `orthotoric metric' on this manifold. We also show that the deformation of the corresponding conformal Killing-Yano form does not exist.
As a rule in General Relativity the spacetime metric fixes the Einstein tensor and through the Field Equations (FE) the energy-momentum tensor. However one cannot write the FE explicitly until a class of observers has been considered. Every class of observers defines a decomposition of the energy-momentum tensor in terms of the dynamical variables energy density ($μ$), the isotropic pressure ($p$), the heat flux $q^a$ and the traceless anisotropic pressure tensor $π_{ab}$. The solution of the FE requires additional assumptions among the dynamical variables known with the generic name equations…
Static space times with maximal symmetric transverse spaces are classified according to their Ricci collineations. These are investigated for non-degenerate Ricci tensor ($det.(R_α) \neq 0$). It turns out that the only collineations admitted by these spaces can be ten, seven, six or four. Some new metrics admitting proper Ricci collineations are also investigated.
We consider four-dimensional, Riemannian, Ricci-flat metrics for which one or other of the self-dual or anti-self-dual Weyl tensors is type-D. Such metrics always have a valence-2 Killing spinor, and therefore a Hermitian structure and at least one Killing vector. We rederive the results of Przanowski and collaborators, that these metrics can all be given in terms of a solution of the $SU(\infty)$-Toda field equation, and show that, when there is a second Killing vector commuting with the first, the method of Ward can be applied to show that the metrics can also be given in terms of an axisymm…
We characterize a general solution to the vacuum Einstein equations which admits isolated horizons. We show it is a non-linear superposition -- in precise sense -- of the Schwarzschild metric with a certain free data set propagating tangentially to the horizon. This proves Ashtekar's conjecture about the structure of spacetime near the isolated horizon. The same superposition method applied to the Kerr metric gives another class of vacuum solutions admitting isolated horizons. More generally, a vacuum spacetime admitting any null, non expanding, shear free surface is characterized. The results…
The Newman-Penrose equations for spacetimes having one spacelike Killing vector are reduced -- in a geometrically defined "canonical frame'' -- to a minimal set, and its differential structure is studied. Expressions for the frame vectors in an arbitrary coordinate basis are given, and coordinate-independent choices of the metric functions are suggested which make the components of the Ricci tensor in the direction of the Killing vector vanish.
The problem of obtaining an explicit representation for the fourth invariant of geodesic motion (generalized Carter constant) of an arbitrary stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetime generated from an Ernst Potential is considered. The coupling between the non-local curvature content of the spacetime as encoded in the Weyl tensor, and the existence of a Killing tensor is explored and a constructive, algebraic test for a fourth order Killing tensor suggested. The approach used exploits the variables defined for the Bäckland transformations to clarify the relationship between Weyl curvature, con…
We derive matter collineations for some static spherically symmetric spacetimes and compare the results with Killing, Ricci and Curvature symmetries. We conclude that matter and Ricci collineations are not, in general, the same.
We study the consequences of the existence of spacelike Ricci inheritance vectors (SpRIVs) parallel to $x^a$ for model of string cloud and string fluid stress tensor in the context of general relativity. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for a spacetime with a model of string cloud and string fluid stress tensor to admit a SpRIV and a SpRIV which is also a spacelike conformal Killing vector (SpCKV). Also, some results are obtained.
New relations involving the Riemann, Ricci and Einstein tensors that have to hold for a given geometry to admit Killing-Yano tensors are described. These relations are then used to introduce novel conserved "currents" involving such Killing-Yano tensors. For a particular current based on the Einstein tensor, we discuss the issue of conserved charges and consider implications for matter coupled to gravity. The condition on the background geometry to allow asymptotic conserved charges for a current introduced by Kastor and Traschen is found and a number of other new aspects of this current are c…
Third rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-dimensional geometries are investigated and classified. It is found that a necessary and sufficient condition for such a geometry to admit a third rank Killing tensor can always be formulated as a quadratic PDE, of order three or lower, in a Kahler type potential for the metric. This is in contrast to the case of first and second rank Killing tensors for which the integrability condition is a linear PDE. The motivation for studying higher rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-geometries, is the fact that exact solutions of the Einstein equations are often associated…
The second order Killing and conformal tensors are analyzed in terms of their spectral decomposition, and some properties of the eigenvalues and the eigenspaces are shown. When the tensor is of type I with only two different eigenvalues, the condition to be a Killing or a conformal tensor is characterized in terms of its underlying almost-product structure. A canonical expression for the metrics admitting these kinds of symmetries is also presented. The space-time cases 1+3 and 2+2 are analyzed in more detail. Starting from this approach to Killing and conformal tensors a geometric interpretat…
